00:00:00Some events transcend the boundaries of sport to become athletic spectacles.
00:00:14For one brief moment, fight fans from around the world will focus their attention on two men in the public spotlight.
00:00:20There is always a migration of the glitter and glamour of beautiful people,
00:00:23taking their $600 ringside seats, because this tiny electric desert strip becomes the place to be.
00:00:30This is the Super Bowl, the World Series, the championship game of boxing.
00:00:45Las Vegas, Nevada, now the home of boxing's big event, HBO Sports presents World Championship Boxing.
00:00:52The undisputed middleweight champion of the world, marvelous Marvin Hagler,
00:00:57defends his title against WBA junior middleweight champion, Roberto Duran.
00:01:05Well, it may be a cliche, the music is rocky, and really, Ray, that has been the story of this man, Roberto Duran,
00:01:11on a locker room on his way to the ring.
00:01:14Well, Duran is really pumped up.
00:01:16In fact, when I saw him in Palm Springs, he looked very, very intense, and I think he's ready for this fight, Barry.
00:01:21I came in today at 156 and a half pounds, and people are saying that he's been under 164 pounds for the past six weeks.
00:01:29So that in itself, something very unusual since the fight with Ray Leonard in Montreal.
00:01:34Well, that tells you something, that self-discipline is with Roberto Duran.
00:01:38Once again, he's a reborn fighter.
00:01:41He wants to be marvelous Marvin Hagler.
00:01:43There is no question but that the man is fit.
00:01:45But a lot of people here are looking back on another fight that took place here between Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes.
00:01:51And everybody was saying the same thing about Muhammad Ali.
00:01:53He looks very fit.
00:01:55Well, this is going to be a very pressure fight, along with the fact both guys will try to knock each other out.
00:02:00His style has been described as back alley baroque, but in fact, Roberto Duran has really belied the impression that he is a heavy, a street fighter.
00:02:12He has been very, very loose, smiling, joking with the press, and of course, he's got very much of the Spanish-speaking press here, and they all are very vociferously on his side.
00:02:23But Duran is a very technical fighter, and he must be at his best to beat Hagler, who is ambidextrous and very strong.
00:02:30How much does it mean to a fighter to be as relaxed as Roberto Duran has been coming into this fight?
00:02:35Well, composure is everything, Barry.
00:02:36You must keep your cool.
00:02:38You cannot get frustrated, and everything must count.
00:02:43There are the numbers on Roberto Duran.
00:02:45He has lost four fights, but in his last five, remember, he is three and two.
00:02:49He also only has two knockouts in his last ten fights, so that's something that must be considered tonight.
00:02:55Those two losses were, of course, to Ray Leonard and to Wilfred Benitez, two of the best fighters in the world.
00:03:04And the reason that he hasn't had many knockouts is because he's moved up in weight.
00:03:08Since he moved up into the welterweight division and then beyond, he hasn't shown the same sort of power as he had as a lightweight.
00:03:16And yet he says that he will knock the man out today.
00:03:18Now, is that just self-confidence, or is it possible?
00:03:23It's self-confidence, and, of course, you don't have to have one great punch to knock out a man.
00:03:27And if you hit him often enough, anybody will be knocked out.
00:03:30Barry, let me ask you the same question I asked Ray a little bit ago.
00:03:32People are saying that Duran has been in there against the top-caliber fighters, and Marvelous Marvin Hagler has not been.
00:03:40He's fought the best middleweights of his time, Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
00:03:43He hasn't lost to any of them in seven and a half years.
00:03:46I think that speaks for itself.
00:03:48You can hear this crowd very much, apparently, in the corner of Roberto Duran.
00:03:54The chant, Duran, Duran, Duran.
00:03:56And here is the undisputed middleweight champion of the world, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, walking behind Pat Petronelli.
00:04:02You see, just going by on the right side of your screen, his handlers bringing him on into the ring.
00:04:07That's about all you have to know about Marvin Hagler's seven title defenses, all by knockout.
00:04:14He would love the record held by another middleweight champion who is here tonight, Carlos Monzon, with 14 title defenses.
00:04:21Stars and stripes forever.
00:04:25Far cry, Larry, from Rocky.
00:04:33So the excitement and the anticipation coming to a fever pitch right at the moment here.
00:04:38Sellout crowd here at Caesars Palace on what has turned out to be a warmer night than was expected.
00:04:43They were talking about temperatures in the 40s, and it has been considerably warmer than that tonight.
00:04:49You know, walking out from the dressing room is the longest walk.
00:04:54It's the anticipation, you're edgy, your stomach, you feel like he has cramps, and it's a tough time.
00:05:00Knowing Marvin Hagler, as I do, I would suspect that he is just anxious to get all of this nonsense over with
00:05:07and throw the first punch of the fight.
00:05:09He was saying he's not real happy being here in Las Vegas.
00:05:12He doesn't find it to be his type of place.
00:05:14Marvin Hagler, even though he's from the big city, from Newark, New Jersey, by way of Brockton, Massachusetts,
00:05:20still is sort of a small-town guy at heart.
00:05:23Really loves it up in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
00:05:26They love him up there.
00:05:27Here he is, 3,000 miles away, amongst the neon and the glitter,
00:05:30stepping into the ring for his eighth kind of defense and his first big payday.
00:05:35A mixed reaction to marvelous Marvin Hagler.
00:05:43There are the numbers on Marvin Hagler.
00:05:4557 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws, 48 knockouts.
00:05:49But most importantly, he has not lost a fight since 1976
00:05:53when he lost to Willie the Worm Monroe.
00:05:56Let's take a look at the tail of the tape
00:05:59and just how these two fighters size up.
00:06:01They are reasonably comparable.
00:06:03Hagler, three years the junior of Roberto Duran.
00:06:05Hagler with a two-inch advantage in height.
00:06:07The weight only mildly surprising in that this is the lightest
00:06:10that marvelous Marvin Hagler has come in
00:06:12since he fought Mustafa Hamshou in Chicago.
00:06:15But he wants the speed, he said,
00:06:17a reach, very big advantage to the champion.
00:06:20And now let's go up to the ring announcer, Chuck Hall,
00:06:23for the introduction of the two fighters.
00:06:26Ladies and gentlemen, the officials have signed
00:06:34by the Nevada State Athletic Commission
00:06:35for this main event of the evening.
00:06:38The judges are Opie Olmussen, Guy Justress,
00:06:42and Yoshida Yoshida.
00:06:44The timekeeper is Eddie O'Toole.
00:06:47Counting at the knockdowns, Charlie Roth.
00:06:50The attending physicians at ringside,
00:06:52doctors Donald Romeo and Flip Pomansky
00:06:55and the referee is Stanley Christodoulou.
00:07:03Ladies and gentlemen,
00:07:05this is the main event of the evening.
00:07:09Fifteen rounds of boxing
00:07:11for the undisputed middleweight championship of the world.
00:07:16Introducing, in the blue corner,
00:07:20the challenger,
00:07:22the current WBA junior middleweight champion of the world,
00:07:27fighting out of Panama City, Panama,
00:07:30weighing in at 156 and one-half pounds,
00:07:33with a professional record of 76 wins,
00:07:36four defeats with 57 knockouts.
00:07:39Ladies and gentlemen,
00:07:40a three-time world champion,
00:07:43in quest of his fourth crown,
00:07:45introducing a man with the hands of stone,
00:07:48Roberto Duran.
00:07:49and in the red corner,
00:08:04fighting out of Brockton, Massachusetts,
00:08:09weighing in at 157 and one-half pounds.
00:08:12He has a professional record of 57 wins,
00:08:16two defeats and two draws,
00:08:18with 48 knockouts.
00:08:21He is the undisputed middleweight champion of the world,
00:08:25introducing marvelous,
00:08:27Marvin Patrick.
00:08:29Referee for tonight's fight is Stanley Christodoulou.
00:08:41You get a look at him,
00:08:42and there was quite an issue about all of that too,
00:08:44Larry Merchant.
00:08:47Well, we have such an international panel of officials,
00:08:52and because this is an international fight,
00:08:55and everybody moving for an edge,
00:08:57there was an official from Montreal,
00:09:00one of the judges tonight,
00:09:01that had those people objected to
00:09:04because he had allowed,
00:09:06in some other fight,
00:09:07the champion to bully and rough up an opponent,
00:09:11and of course,
00:09:12Duran has been known to do that.
00:09:14This man, however,
00:09:15is considered one of the best referees in the world,
00:09:19and you may recall that he refereed
00:09:21the first and the great fight
00:09:23between Eric Pryor and Alexis Arguello.
00:09:26It is Marvin Hagler's choice not to shake hands.
00:09:30He never does that in a championship fight.
00:09:32He says,
00:09:32I'll shake hands after the fight,
00:09:34but not before.
00:09:36BG3 for a flash knockdown.
00:09:39First round.
00:09:40Listen to this crowd.
00:09:42The crowd is absolutely electric.
00:09:44Duran on the left,
00:09:45Hagler on the right.
00:09:46Hagler the champion.
00:09:47Duran wants a piece of it.
00:09:48Whichever fighter is able to land
00:09:53the first telling blow,
00:09:55then you'll see a lot of action pick up.
00:09:58Both fighters very loose here in the first round.
00:10:00Both very warm.
00:10:01The punch I've watched Duran throw,
00:10:09he's been working on it,
00:10:10is that overhand straight right.
00:10:13You notice he'll try to measure this man.
00:10:16They throw a left jab out,
00:10:17and he try to set him up.
00:10:19Duran putting it long range.
00:10:20Hagler a right-hand lead.
00:10:23Duran has said that you might see
00:10:25a different Roberto Duran
00:10:26than the one you used to see.
00:10:27Combination by Duran draws a
00:10:31creep warning by Stanley Christodoulou
00:10:33for low blows.
00:10:34Hagler a left-hand to the head.
00:10:40There is no perspiration on either fighter,
00:10:43which means they're a little cold now.
00:10:47So here we have a feeling-out process.
00:10:52Duran trying to measure Hagler.
00:10:57He's keeping that left jab.
00:11:03Coming out slowly.
00:11:04We're trying to get closer
00:11:05for the overhand right.
00:11:06Temperatures here in Las Vegas
00:11:08were reportedly going to get down
00:11:10as low as the 40s,
00:11:11but under the lights here,
00:11:12actually it is pretty toasty,
00:11:13I would say,
00:11:15without being a meteorologist.
00:11:18They're probably in the 60s,
00:11:19in the ring,
00:11:19maybe even the 70s.
00:11:20You notice what happened there.
00:11:22Inside, Duran tied up Hagler.
00:11:24Because Hagler's very good inside.
00:11:25They claim that Hagler's not a very
00:11:26effective fighter inside.
00:11:28Hagler throws very short punches,
00:11:30especially the uppercuts.
00:11:31And the key for Duran
00:11:32is went from the inside
00:11:33to tie Hagler up,
00:11:35get his punches off,
00:11:36back off,
00:11:36and do what he's doing now.
00:11:38No damage here in the first round.
00:11:39Largely a feeling-out process
00:11:41by both men.
00:11:42Duran forcing the fight,
00:11:43gets in with a good right hand.
00:11:44Still largely a feeling-out process
00:12:09going on here in round one
00:12:10inside of 30 seconds remaining.
00:12:11Combination by Hagler,
00:12:21backs Duran up,
00:12:22no damage.
00:12:23The end of this round,
00:12:23we're going to go into first
00:12:25Marvin Hagler's corner,
00:12:26and then into Roberto Duran's corner.
00:12:28Something new here on HBO.
00:12:29We will have an interpreter
00:12:30at the moment
00:12:31giving you the translation
00:12:33of just what's going on
00:12:34in the Spanish-speaking
00:12:35Roberto Duran's corner.
00:12:36Let's listen in
00:12:45to Marvin Hagler's corner.
00:12:46How are you doing?
00:12:47How are you doing?
00:12:50All right.
00:12:51Come on.
00:12:52He's got it.
00:12:53He's got it.
00:12:56All right.
00:12:56That's a feeling all right.
00:12:57See what he's doing.
00:12:58All right.
00:13:01He's jabbing.
00:13:02He's getting on the left hand.
00:13:03He's trying to throw that
00:13:06straight right hand.
00:13:07Okay?
00:13:07So when he's doing that jab,
00:13:08when he bends over,
00:13:09come up with that upper guy.
00:13:10Like you've been doing.
00:13:11He'll lean on that side
00:13:11every time.
00:13:13Otherwise,
00:13:13box like you've been doxing.
00:13:14Catch him coming in
00:13:15and stay with his feet.
00:13:16Look at him.
00:13:18You may have heard
00:13:20that Hagler complained
00:13:21that he was trying
00:13:22to be thumbed.
00:13:23But Rand was trying
00:13:24to thumb him.
00:13:24You have to keep on going
00:13:29the same way you're doing.
00:13:30You're doing fine.
00:13:31Keep on going the same way.
00:13:33You're doing great.
00:13:37This is the second round.
00:13:39You know,
00:13:39the battle of the corner
00:13:40is very important
00:13:40and all of the critics here
00:13:42have said unanimously
00:13:44that the corner edge
00:13:45goes to Marvin Hagler.
00:13:47Roberto Duran used to have
00:13:48Freddie Brown,
00:13:49used to have Ray Arcel.
00:13:50154 years of experience.
00:13:52They're both gone.
00:13:53There is a lot of inexperience
00:13:55in Roberto Duran's corner.
00:13:58Hagler's drill
00:13:58a left hand
00:14:00to Duran's body.
00:14:01Let's see if the power
00:14:02is a solid weight
00:14:04for Hagler's parents
00:14:04could be a factor here.
00:14:07Duran did get a left hand in.
00:14:10And Hagler comes back
00:14:11with a combination.
00:14:12Neither man has been hurt.
00:14:13We're in the second round.
00:14:14Hagler going underneath
00:14:15with the left hand.
00:14:17That's exactly what his corner
00:14:18was saying to do.
00:14:20Hagler right at the moment
00:14:24fighting softball.
00:14:25He will go
00:14:25to the right hand
00:14:26occasionally, of course.
00:14:27and Chris DiDulu
00:14:40talk story for a moment
00:14:41about elbowing.
00:14:42You notice that Hagler
00:14:43is staying in the
00:14:44softball style.
00:14:46And normally he doesn't change
00:14:48until he gets
00:14:49Sissi Coleman in trouble.
00:14:50Then he starts to switch up.
00:14:52You're going to hear the crowd
00:14:53react quite a lot.
00:14:54Duran holding Hagler.
00:14:55And the crowd will react
00:15:00to some punches
00:15:01where there really is
00:15:02no damage.
00:15:03This crowd is really alive.
00:15:09Hagler is still
00:15:10a little tight, though.
00:15:12His punches are not
00:15:13as fluid as they normally
00:15:14would be.
00:15:19Hagler missing a few jabs.
00:15:21Came in with the left hand
00:15:22on the side of the head.
00:15:22No damage there.
00:15:27That was on the gloves.
00:15:33Hey, you're right, Ray.
00:15:34Marvin is missing
00:15:35a lot more punches
00:15:36than I've seen him miss.
00:15:38And it may just be
00:15:38that Duran is making a miss.
00:15:39There was a right hand
00:15:40that didn't get in.
00:15:41See, Duran is a very
00:15:48elusive fighter.
00:15:50And it's very difficult
00:15:51to hear him because
00:15:52he's never stationary
00:15:53talk.
00:15:53He moves that head
00:15:54and has very,
00:15:56always maintain
00:15:57good balance.
00:15:58And he's also
00:15:59on the gloves.
00:16:06Duran is making it
00:16:07difficult for Hagler
00:16:07to land it
00:16:08with this straight punch.
00:16:09What happened is
00:16:10what he needed to do
00:16:11is to throw some
00:16:11uppercuts
00:16:12because the straight punch
00:16:15is going to miss
00:16:15every time.
00:16:16Duran did get in there
00:16:17with one left hand,
00:16:17but a lot of those
00:16:18punches are going
00:16:19on the gloves.
00:16:19That was a good right hand.
00:16:29And the right hand
00:16:32of the body.
00:16:32Now watch for the
00:16:33uphooks by Duran.
00:16:38Very good round
00:16:39for Roberto Duran.
00:16:40Keep on going the same
00:17:06way.
00:17:07Don't take it too fast.
00:17:08Keep on going slowly.
00:17:10You're doing very well
00:17:11and you don't have to
00:17:12hurry it up.
00:17:13Just keep doing it
00:17:14at the same pace.
00:17:16All those combinations
00:17:29now, right?
00:17:30Move that head
00:17:31once in a while.
00:17:32Just mix them up.
00:17:32We like going
00:17:33in a little motion.
00:17:36Hagler is being
00:17:39deliberate and nephotical
00:17:40as is his custom
00:17:41in the early rounds.
00:17:43This is the third round.
00:17:48We talked about
00:17:49inexperience at Duran's
00:17:50corner.
00:17:50Louis Spada,
00:17:51who is now with him,
00:17:52certainly not inexperienced
00:17:53in the sense of having
00:17:54been there before,
00:17:55but inexperienced
00:17:56in the sense
00:17:56of being in a fight
00:17:59of this caliber
00:18:00with a man of this
00:18:01caliber.
00:18:01He has had a couple
00:18:02of champions
00:18:02in lighter divisions.
00:18:06When everybody else
00:18:09quit on Roberto Duran,
00:18:10Louis Spada was there.
00:18:11He said,
00:18:11if you need me
00:18:12any time to carry
00:18:12your bucket,
00:18:13I would do it
00:18:14without pay.
00:18:15Duran called him
00:18:15back and said,
00:18:16you don't have to
00:18:17carry the bucket.
00:18:18Right hand by Duran.
00:18:25Wild left hand
00:18:26by Hagler.
00:18:26And Duran counterpunching
00:18:28very well.
00:18:29What Hagler can't do,
00:18:30he can't let Duran
00:18:32go at his own pace.
00:18:35Hagler must do
00:18:35his own thing.
00:18:36He shouldn't wait
00:18:37on Duran.
00:18:40That was another
00:18:40lunging left hand
00:18:41by Hagler.
00:18:42And Duran is getting
00:18:43Hagler to fight
00:18:43his fight.
00:18:45Hagler's very sluggish
00:18:47to me.
00:18:48Maybe because of the
00:18:49weight that he came in.
00:18:51Came in lighter than
00:18:52any other time
00:18:54with the exception
00:18:54of the Mustafa Hamcha
00:18:55fight.
00:18:57In which he weighed
00:18:58the same as he does
00:18:59here.
00:19:03Hagler digging the
00:19:04right to the body
00:19:04that time,
00:19:05effectively.
00:19:11Very much of an
00:19:12up-tempo fight,
00:19:13even though neither
00:19:13man has been hurt.
00:19:14Both fighters very
00:19:15active.
00:19:22there was a good
00:19:27right hand by
00:19:28Hagler on the way
00:19:29in,
00:19:29but Duran tied him
00:19:30up immediately.
00:19:32The reason
00:19:32Hagler's able to land
00:19:33is because he's
00:19:34switched up.
00:19:35Back to off it up.
00:19:40Hagler can do that.
00:19:41Sometimes in the
00:19:42middle of a combination
00:19:43he can go from
00:19:43left to right.
00:19:46A little bit short
00:19:47with that winging
00:19:47right hand.
00:19:48And Duran right on
00:19:49the button.
00:19:51That was on the
00:19:52gloves.
00:19:54Hagler got the
00:19:55better of that
00:19:55exchange.
00:19:56Duran missed with
00:19:57the right hand.
00:19:59But did not miss
00:19:59with those two.
00:20:00And Hagler a lunging
00:20:01right hand misses.
00:20:07At the moment
00:20:08this is much ado
00:20:09about nothing.
00:20:11Inside Duran is
00:20:12staying close to
00:20:13Hagler's chest also.
00:20:14Which makes it
00:20:15difficult for a man
00:20:16to really throw
00:20:17his punches.
00:20:19Hagler misses the
00:20:20left hand again.
00:20:22Hagler missing a lot
00:20:24of punches in this
00:20:24fight.
00:20:28That right hand got
00:20:29in.
00:20:38And in the third round.
00:20:43Hagler found out in
00:20:44that round how
00:20:45difficult it really is
00:20:47to hit Roberto Duran.
00:20:49Don't try and
00:20:49knock him out
00:20:49every time.
00:20:50That's not the name
00:20:50of the game.
00:20:51He's sitting back
00:20:52on you.
00:20:52See?
00:20:53Don't fall in the trap.
00:20:55Don't fall in the trap.
00:20:56Really?
00:20:58A little bit tight.
00:20:59Try and knock him out
00:20:59every time.
00:20:59Don't do that.
00:21:00It's not necessary.
00:21:01He's trying to get it
00:21:01off.
00:21:02Go with the speed.
00:21:05Let's take a look
00:21:06at this exchange
00:21:06as they're in close.
00:21:07Hagler I thought
00:21:08had the better of it
00:21:09inside.
00:21:10Landing some heavier
00:21:11stuff.
00:21:12But I think he's
00:21:13been a little
00:21:13frustrated and trying
00:21:14to land big punches.
00:21:16Here's another look
00:21:17at it.
00:21:19Another factor in
00:21:20this round is that
00:21:21we sense that Duran
00:21:22feels that he's not
00:21:24outgunned.
00:21:25He's not afraid
00:21:26of Hagler.
00:21:27What Cody Petronelli
00:21:40and I'm sure you
00:21:41heard said to
00:21:42Marvin Hagler is
00:21:44don't try to knock
00:21:45him out with every
00:21:45punch.
00:21:46That's not the name
00:21:47of the game.
00:21:48He said it at the
00:21:48beginning and he said
00:21:49it at the end.
00:21:51Hagler scored more
00:21:52effectively there.
00:21:52That was a good
00:21:53left hand in the body
00:21:53and there's a good
00:21:54right hand by Duran.
00:21:57Interesting thing
00:22:00here Ray is that
00:22:01neither man has
00:22:02really been able to
00:22:02take complete control
00:22:03so far.
00:22:04That's true because
00:22:05now you're talking
00:22:05about the quality
00:22:06of fighters that
00:22:07are in the ring
00:22:07today.
00:22:08In fact now they're
00:22:09starting to loosen
00:22:09up but not as
00:22:10tight as it was
00:22:11they were in the
00:22:12early rounds.
00:22:22Rand being a
00:22:23very patient
00:22:23fighter.
00:22:27That was over the
00:22:38top of Hagler's
00:22:39head.
00:22:42Hagler should be
00:22:44using that jab a lot
00:22:45more.
00:22:46Keep a Duran at bay.
00:22:51That was a good
00:22:52right hand by Duran.
00:22:54That one was over the
00:22:55top of the head.
00:22:56But the crowd reacts
00:22:57every time Duran scores.
00:22:59There's a right hand
00:22:59right on the forehead
00:23:01of Roberta Duran.
00:23:02Roberta Duran affected
00:23:03the jabs of Hagler
00:23:05very still.
00:23:14Neither man is
00:23:15marked.
00:23:15This is the fourth round.
00:23:20Once again
00:23:21Duran is still
00:23:22trying to measure
00:23:22Hagler with that
00:23:23right foot of
00:23:23right hand.
00:23:28He's not
00:23:28wasting any energy.
00:23:32There's a right hand
00:23:33by Duran.
00:23:41Duran has
00:23:42Hagler kind of
00:23:42lunging with
00:23:43some of his
00:23:43punches here.
00:23:45What's
00:23:45Duran doing
00:23:46is he's giving
00:23:46a lot of
00:23:47head fans.
00:23:53good counter
00:23:55punch by Duran.
00:23:57It was a
00:23:58right hand
00:23:59by Duran.
00:24:13Both men look
00:24:13very strong
00:24:14here.
00:24:14Neither has been
00:24:15hurt.
00:24:15Neither has
00:24:16marked.
00:24:16We're in the
00:24:16fourth round.
00:24:17another factor
00:24:23is we're not
00:24:24directing this
00:24:24pace at this
00:24:26weight.
00:24:27Crowd comes
00:24:28alive once more
00:24:29with a chant.
00:24:30Duran.
00:24:30Duran.
00:24:31going into the
00:24:38fourth round.
00:24:39We'll go into
00:24:40Roberto Duran's
00:24:41corner and
00:24:41listen with the
00:24:43interpretation by
00:24:44Tito Alba.
00:24:45You are a better
00:24:54man.
00:24:56Keep showing
00:24:57that you are a
00:24:58better man than
00:24:59he is and take
00:25:01it easy.
00:25:01Use your head.
00:25:03Exactly the way
00:25:04you are doing it.
00:25:05His job is very
00:25:06strong.
00:25:07Take it easy.
00:25:08Don't get excited.
00:25:10You are a better
00:25:10man.
00:25:11You're going to
00:25:12win soon.
00:25:13You're showing
00:25:15everybody.
00:25:16Keep on punching.
00:25:17Keep on punching.
00:25:18Keep on punching.
00:25:21Dr. Cordoba says
00:25:22that he is caught
00:25:23in the left side
00:25:25of his forehead.
00:25:33Roberto Duran
00:25:34certainly doesn't
00:25:35look like a
00:25:353-1 underdog
00:25:36at this point.
00:25:38He's not the
00:25:38favorite either.
00:25:40But he's making
00:25:40a fight of it
00:25:41obviously.
00:25:42Interesting that
00:25:42his corner is
00:25:43almost more like
00:25:44a pep talk
00:25:45than it is
00:25:45a strategy
00:25:46session.
00:25:52This is the
00:25:52fifth round.
00:25:56Jab of Hagler
00:25:57has been
00:25:58effective.
00:25:59Counter punching
00:26:00of Duran
00:26:00has been
00:26:01effective.
00:26:02Either man
00:26:03with a clear
00:26:03cut edge.
00:26:04Another thing
00:26:05Duran is trying
00:26:05to do is
00:26:06seems to me
00:26:06he's trying
00:26:07to frustrate
00:26:07Hagler.
00:26:08That time
00:26:13it was Hagler
00:26:14with a
00:26:14counterpunch
00:26:15comes back
00:26:15with a
00:26:15right hand
00:26:16behind it.
00:26:29That uppercut
00:26:30gets in
00:26:31by Hagler.
00:26:31And again
00:26:33a right hand
00:26:33counterpunch
00:26:34by Duran.
00:26:39That was a good
00:26:40right hand
00:26:40by Duran
00:26:41back
00:26:41Sagler off.
00:26:42back to
00:27:05Archadocs.
00:27:06Right hand
00:27:14by Duran.
00:27:16Hagler
00:27:17it should be
00:27:17pointed out
00:27:18has not been
00:27:18down either
00:27:19as a professional
00:27:20or an amateur.
00:27:21Well Hagler
00:27:21has missed a lot
00:27:22of shots
00:27:22and now he's
00:27:23starting to land.
00:27:26Both men
00:27:26landing heavily
00:27:27here.
00:27:30Now Duran
00:27:31is starting
00:27:31for left
00:27:31hooks.
00:27:35This is
00:27:35really a
00:27:36thinking
00:27:36man's
00:27:36fight
00:27:37so far.
00:27:39Good
00:27:39right hand
00:27:40of the
00:27:40body
00:27:40by Duran.
00:27:41Good
00:27:42solid
00:27:42punches.
00:27:56You know
00:27:57what
00:27:57might be
00:27:58the case
00:27:58bro
00:27:58is the
00:27:59psychological
00:27:59warfare
00:28:00that
00:28:00started
00:28:00maybe
00:28:01has
00:28:02affected
00:28:02Marvin
00:28:03Harris.
00:28:03Right
00:28:05hand
00:28:05of the
00:28:05body
00:28:05and
00:28:05left
00:28:06of the
00:28:06head
00:28:06by
00:28:06Hagler
00:28:07that
00:28:07night.
00:28:13This
00:28:14fight
00:28:14being
00:28:14fought
00:28:15at the
00:28:15tempo
00:28:15and
00:28:17with
00:28:17the
00:28:17effectiveness
00:28:17of all
00:28:18the
00:28:19advanced
00:28:19billing.
00:28:20We
00:28:20talked
00:28:20about
00:28:20will
00:28:21the
00:28:21fight
00:28:21be
00:28:21as
00:28:21good
00:28:21as
00:28:22the
00:28:22event
00:28:22so
00:28:22far
00:28:23it
00:28:23is
00:28:23usurping
00:28:24the
00:28:24event.
00:28:33right
00:28:33hand
00:28:33on the
00:28:34body
00:28:34back
00:28:34Sackler
00:28:35off
00:28:35again
00:28:35that
00:28:36would
00:28:37hurt
00:28:37at
00:28:38the

00:28:57now
00:28:58he's
00:28:59waiting

00:29:06left
00:29:06that
00:29:07really
00:29:08wasn't
00:29:08effective

00:29:09behind
00:29:10Durant
00:29:11we'll

00:29:31patience
00:29:31this
00:29:39is
00:29:39the
00:29:39sixth
00:29:39round
00:29:40Marvin
00:29:41Hagler's
00:29:41corner
00:29:41exhorting
00:29:42him
00:29:42to be
00:29:42patient
00:29:43and
00:29:44Hagler
00:29:44was
00:29:44saying
00:29:45to
00:29:45do
00:29:45what
00:29:45they
00:29:45said
00:29:45he's
00:29:46got
00:29:46to
00:29:46get
00:29:46inside
00:29:46a
00:29:46little
00:29:47bit
00:29:47more
00:29:47and
00:29:47that
00:29:47of course
00:29:47could
00:29:48be
00:29:48dangerous
00:29:48especially
00:29:50when you're
00:29:50missing
00:29:51there was
00:29:53a little
00:29:53swelling
00:29:54along
00:29:54the eye
00:29:55below
00:29:55the eye
00:29:55of
00:29:55Marvin
00:29:55Hagler
00:29:56doesn't
00:29:56appear
00:29:56to be
00:29:57anything
00:29:57that
00:29:57will
00:29:57be
00:29:57any
00:29:57problem
00:29:58at least
00:29:58in the
00:29:58foreseeable
00:29:59future
00:29:59the

00:32:59you're still in control of the fight
00:33:01keep punching at the body
00:33:03he's feeling your punches at the body
00:33:05notice that he opened his mouth when you punch him in the body
00:33:08all right let's take a look at some of these exchanges that was Hagler's best round
00:33:16and I have to say I have never seen Roberto Duran get hit as many clean shots
00:33:21in most fights he that he has ever fought
00:33:23he cannot fight very much longer and accept that kind of punishment
00:33:30he thought he had the strength to match Hagler
00:33:35he found out in that round that he may not
00:33:38they come out for the seventh round Duran is a tired fighter
00:33:42and all you have to do is look into the two corners to see the difference in these two men
00:33:46Duran breathing heavily through the mouth
00:33:48Hagler talking to his two trainers
00:33:50and hardly breathing heavily at all
00:33:52I think for Duran the mistake he can make is tragic change
00:33:55reiterate on Larry
00:33:56the fact he can't stand there and take those clean shots
00:33:59continuously
00:34:00this is a very important round for Roberto Duran
00:34:05he had control early
00:34:06he lost it completely in the last round
00:34:08and now he's going to have to start to take it back
00:34:10there's not the snap to Duran's punches left
00:34:25because that round
00:34:27both fighters have changed some really devastating punches
00:34:30you see that Duran to the right hand
00:34:35there was nothing on it
00:34:37all arm and you can see that toward the end of the sixth round
00:34:40there again
00:34:54Hagler trying to throw a straight straight punch at Duran and
00:34:58he was unsuccessful
00:34:59goes up across those body shots
00:35:01would be very effective against a fight like Roberto Duran
00:35:05Hagler fighting right handed right at the moment and a great left hand
00:35:09still orthodox now
00:35:15and Duran continues to breathe through the mouth
00:35:19Hagler is just a right hand now
00:35:25good right hand
00:35:26and the reason he misses is because
00:35:29he's trying to load it with one big punch
00:35:32Hagler has gone right handed most of this round actually
00:35:35two left hands
00:35:39Duran stands there, drops his arms for a moment
00:35:43and just sneers at Marvin Hagler
00:35:47Duran holding on a little bit here too
00:35:52Duran, I guess that was a good play of what I was able to do to Duran in New Orleans
00:36:03I'd like to see what Hagler goes to the body a lot more
00:36:12because of the weight, the solid weight that Hagler has
00:36:15I'm sure as the rounds go by he should be still a little stronger than Duran
00:36:19you can really start to see Marvin Hagler in his own mind
00:36:23think he has control of this fight
00:36:25and I think he's got a tired fighter on his hands right now
00:36:28and maybe one that's a little bit hurt
00:36:32and if he is, it would be an accumulation
00:36:41Hagler glaring at Roberto Duran at the bell
00:36:45take the pace of you, it's a fast pace
00:36:47it's a good run for him
00:36:49good run, take a deep run
00:36:55that was a good run
00:36:57straight yourself a little bit
00:36:58nice run
00:36:59Marvin, when you're cooking with the right hand
00:37:01you're doing good, you turn yourself
00:37:03he's leaning over, he's holding that straight left hand
00:37:05he's leaning over, he's leaning over
00:37:07he's going over, he's going over
00:37:15that was a good run
00:37:17big run
00:37:29Okay Roberto, now you have more heart than he does
00:37:31so now, go ahead now
00:37:33he's tired too
00:37:35Keep on crying. Keep on crying.
00:37:42And Durant comes out for the eighth round, and he's still, Ray to me, looks like a tired fighter.
00:37:46Well, he is, Barry. Fatigue has said with Roberto Durant, and once again, and trying to out-muscle a larger fighter, it takes its toll on a smaller guy.
00:37:56Durant's corner still very much of a cheerleading kind of corner, trying to say, you've got more heart.
00:38:01They also said, he's tired, too.
00:38:04Now, it's not that he's tired that's important. It's the two.
00:38:09It's two. Yes, it is.
00:38:19Again, you've got a good idea how important a corner can be.
00:38:24Hagler's corner has been very calm, even when the fight was being taken to him by the challenger.
00:38:34You know, it's every opportunity, every opportunity Durant has, he goes to the body of Hagler.
00:38:39You know, it's every opportunity Durant has. He goes to the body of Hagler.
00:38:40You know, it's every opportunity Durant has, he goes to the body of Hagler.
00:38:47Durant's body is wide open, and I'm surprised that Haglis is not going to the body as often.
00:38:57You know, it's every opportunity Durant has, he goes to the body if happened.
00:39:11Left hand starting down and coming up, and that's exactly what Goodie Petronelli said.
00:39:15Durant with his best punch in three rounds.
00:39:23He's still going to show it up because he's thrown by Marvin Haglis.
00:39:31And there, Haglis digging to the body a couple of times inside.
00:39:45At this stage now, we're both going to play a mobile, a chess game.
00:40:03Haglis, once again, is missing.
00:40:13Both fighters, though, just trying to load up one punch.
00:40:17And it's not going to work that way.
00:40:19Durant trying to work inside a little bit more than he has.
00:40:21Haglis bounces off the rope, sticks a jab in the face.
00:40:23Durant continues to breathe.
00:40:25and a mound at the belt.
00:40:35I had the sense in that round that Haglis was beginning to flow at the river over Durant, who was giving his best chance.
00:40:39Perhaps even more than most of us expected.
00:40:55Perhaps even more than most of us expected.
00:40:57Okay, Marvin.
00:40:59Go ahead.
00:41:00Okay, Marvin.
00:41:01Listen, use the jab more often.
00:41:02All right?
00:41:03Try not to get too much of a slugging card.
00:41:04Even though you're beating him inside.
00:41:05Try not to get too much slugging card.
00:41:06Use that jab.
00:41:07Double up on the jab.
00:41:08He'll come at you.
00:41:09I like it right-handed, Marvin.
00:41:10It's doing real good.
00:41:11Stay right-handed for a while.
00:41:12That'll confuse hell out, because all your punches are coming together.
00:41:14There you saw Haglis wonderful right jab, which he sometimes turns around and turns it into a right cross.
00:41:24He's a natural right-hander who fights left-handed most of the time.
00:41:29There you saw it again.
00:41:31A very, very difficult style, even for someone of Durant's experience, to fathom.
00:41:37It's hard to get a rhythm down when you're fighting a man who can change up and do so many things.
00:41:43They beat the center of the ring right off the bat here.
00:41:48In the ninth round.
00:41:52Haglis corner exhorting him to jab and jab some more.
00:41:56Haglis corner, they don't want him to be inside with Durant too much because they fear of the headbutt.
00:42:03That time Haglis counterpunching off a lunging right hand.
00:42:07Why did I get the jab, Barry?
00:42:12That's what Haglis needs to do.
00:42:14Use that right jab a lot more.
00:42:17He'll find himself a lot closer to Durant.
00:42:20He'll find that the left hand will follow right hand.
00:42:22Once again Durant using experience. Good combination there by Haglis.
00:42:32Those are shots that take their toes. Now we see Haglis.
00:42:42Four punch combination. Starting to come to life now.
00:42:44And a right jab to the face. Very effective.
00:42:48Now we see the other shots that take their toes.
00:42:53Now we see Haglis. Four punch combination.
00:42:55Starting to come to life now.
00:42:57And a right jab to the face. Very effective.
00:43:00Now we see the uppercutcher once again. Thrown by Haglis.
00:43:05What I think another mistake to Haglis make. He gets his punches off and then he stops.
00:43:10He should stay there with Durant.
00:43:12Because what's Durant doing now, Barry? He's getting a breather.
00:43:15Durant is breathing heavy from the mouth.
00:43:17Well, he's getting a breather.
00:43:18Now we see the uppercutcher once again.
00:43:19Now we see the uppercutcher once again. Thrown by Haglis.
00:43:21Now we see the uppercutcher once again. Thrown by Haglis.
00:43:23And a good left to the body. Durant coming up with a combination of his own.
00:43:51I like to see some lead off. Left hands thrown by Haglis.
00:43:57Because Durant, he's able to figure a fight out very easily.
00:44:01Especially doing the same thing over and over again.
00:44:04Durant is kind of waiting for Haglis to come to him at the moment.
00:44:10Might be trying to pace himself. Still a long way to go.
00:44:16Lunging right hand. Haglis back with an uppercut. And two jabs.
00:44:20All of those punches got in.
00:44:25All of those punches got in.
00:44:41You see what I'm telling you? You're back in control because you're doing it very slowly. Very slowly. That is the way you should do it. Keep hitting by the ribs.
00:44:50Let's take a look at some of the action here. I think Marvin Haglis might disagree and so might you about who has control of this fight at this moment.
00:44:57I have Haglis well in front. Six rounds to two and one even.
00:45:04But Durant is still in there and is still trying. He has an ice bag now in his trunk.
00:45:09Obviously the people in Durant's corner feel that he is tired.
00:45:14How are you doing now? Don't take it.
00:45:15You know, Larry, I harken back to another fight we did with a bird of Durant against the
00:45:21Benitez. In which we had Benitez comfortably in front and it wound up being a split decision.
00:45:28And we have already seen a couple of decisions.
00:45:36and we have already seen a couple of decisions that the folks at this time have had done.
00:45:41And the people in Durant is still trying and still trying.
00:45:44Benitez, in which we had Benitez comfortably in front, and it wound up being a split decision.
00:45:54And we have already seen a couple of decisions that the folks at this table would have thought
00:45:59of as questionable in earlier fights tonight.
00:46:02It appears to me that Hagler wants to make Durant work.
00:46:18I think he feels that Durant is getting tired, his punch is not that effective, and wants
00:46:24to make him work harder to weaken him.
00:46:27Hagler is missing a lot less frequently than he was in the early rounds.
00:46:31He really seems to have Durant measured at the moment.
00:46:39Well, now Hagler has started to measure Durant, and his punch is becoming a lot more accurate
00:46:45and cleaner.
00:46:46He's starting to land.
00:46:56And Durant gets in with the right hand, right on the nose.
00:46:59And a left hand on the nose.
00:47:01And a left hand on the nose.
00:47:09Hagler effective right at the moment...
00:47:10...inside.
00:47:20Durant, Durant's looking for right hands.
00:47:22There he just throws.
00:47:23And what he's doing Barry, he's really starting to smother Hagler punches, get closer and get a look at him with a low blow.
00:47:33Get closer and try to work the body to come up to the head with the right hand.
00:47:53Hagler finding this round very flat-footed. He's been up with the balls of his feet quite a lot. And it's a combination by Duran. And right now, Hagler looks as though he's had a little of the starch go out of him too.
00:48:06Well, you notice what Duran's doing. Duran's going to do the body. And both fighters are breathing heavily from the mouth. And like I said, I think this fight is going to be who wants it the most.
00:48:23That was a good right hand by Duran. But he takes one in return to his stomach. And there's a good left hand by Hagler.
00:48:42Nice game.
00:48:46Nice game.
00:48:48Nice game, man.
00:48:50Nice game, man.
00:48:52Nice game, man.
00:48:54Nice game, man.
00:48:56Nice game, man.
00:48:58Nice game, man.
00:49:00Nice game, man.
00:49:02How are you feeling, man?
00:49:04Good.
00:49:05He's trying to time the guy on the show.
00:49:07You are winning by decision. Keep punching. You got him. You are a better boxer. Keep it up. You are winning by decision. You are a better boxer.
00:49:26And somewhere, somehow, he dug something out of that deep reservoir of spirit that has made him such a great fighter over the last decade and more.
00:49:37I think whenever you match up two great champions, both of them exchange some pretty good blows on each other's side.
00:50:07In fact, despite the outcome, it would be a matter if he has the most heart and determination.
00:50:14And the crowd is a little restless because both fighters are trying to get a breather.
00:50:21And the red keeping Hagler off of him with a jab.
00:50:28Hagler right-handed for the moment.
00:50:35He came with a right-hand lead. That's a look he hasn't shown Duran before.
00:50:42And still fighting right-handed. He's been effective from the right side.
00:50:47Now back to the left hand.
00:50:54Not too much is really happening now.
00:51:01Well, it seems to be a round where both men are pissing themselves.
00:51:08Barry, I'm still waiting for the lead off left hand from Marvin Hagler.
00:51:15A lot of times he has opportunity because he moves closer to Duran.
00:51:22They're not pissing themselves.
00:51:34Barry, I'm still waiting for the lead off left hand from Marvin Hagrid.
00:51:40A lot of times he has opportunity because he moves closer to Durant.
00:51:44But he hesitates. He doesn't throw it.
00:51:52A little damage done inside.
00:52:08Hey, sit back.
00:52:10I have no idea why Hagler went into a dance routine in that round unless he needed a blow.
00:52:26It would seem to me that everything he was doing was so right.
00:52:30And I have no idea why he would change it.
00:52:34You don't have to knock him out to win the fight.
00:52:36You can't win in 15 because you are a better boxer.
00:52:38Keep it up the same way.
00:52:40He is tired. Keep it up.
00:52:42He is tired. Keep it up.
00:52:44You don't have to knock him out to win the fight.
00:52:46You can't win in 15 because you are a better boxer.
00:52:50Keep it up the same way.
00:52:52He is tired. Keep it up.
00:52:56What's this bitch up?
00:52:58What's this bitch up?
00:53:00What's this bitch up?
00:53:02I'm tired.
00:53:04It's a little bit too much more than that man.
00:53:06Let's take piece of my iron.
00:53:10What was that?
00:53:14Alright man.
00:53:16Let's put them together.
00:53:18You just stayed in his hard position.
00:53:20Well, Roberto Duran has at least one victory tonight, if not the ultimate decision.
00:53:40No challenger has gone this far in a championship fight against marvelous Marvin Hagrid.
00:53:50Hagrid, of course, went that far against Antafermo in the first fight, but Antafermo is the champion.
00:54:10You see what happens every time that Hagrid tries to reach, well, challenger's crosses, Duran comes back with something.
00:54:20This tempo is picked up here in this plump round.
00:54:26Now, Hagrid should stay close now, Burry, because I believe those body shots are really hurting Roberto Duran.
00:54:32Duran's corner, you heard, talk about the fact that their man could win it in 15 rounds by decision.
00:54:37I'm not so sure about that, Burry.
00:54:39There's a little puffiness around Hagrid's left eye.
00:54:43And normally Roberto Duran, when he sees a handicap, he works on it.
00:54:47It becomes a target.
00:54:48You know it's now, Duran's time to throw more right hands to that left eye.
00:54:56And if that left eye should close, you may see another replay, or a replay, of David Moore.
00:55:01Yeah, that puffiness had gotten no worse for about eight rounds.
00:55:05Saw it the first time in the second round, but now it is definitely a factor.
00:55:09And Duran trying to work on it.
00:55:13Duran is tired, but he has so much ring savvy and intelligence.
00:55:23And Hagrid's tired also.
00:55:24I think both men are.
00:55:25Duran getting inside.
00:55:30What's the right hand of Roberto Duran?
00:55:33Well, stay for the eye.
00:55:37There it is.
00:55:38Now that eye's starting to close now.
00:55:42And that, of course, makes the man very vulnerable.
00:55:44The right hand, right on the button.
00:55:46And Hagrid was hurt by that punch.
00:55:52Very effective round for the challenger.
00:55:54Hagrid backs Duran off with the left hand.
00:55:57Comes right after him.
00:55:58Takes the right hand.
00:55:59Takes the other.
00:56:09Hagrid to the right.
00:56:10A left behind that.
00:56:12Blood now.
00:56:14Coming from the eye.
00:56:15It will definitely bother Marvin Hagrid, who comes back with a combination.
00:56:19Puffiness underneath, bleeding from above.
00:56:21And a great round, actually, for both men.
00:56:32All right, all right, listen.
00:56:43Okay, listen.
00:56:45Hold this thing.
00:56:48Come on, pick up a little bit.
00:56:50Try it close.
00:56:55Marvin, don't get no fucking punch.
00:56:56Just beat him to the punch.
00:56:57Double up that jab.
00:56:58Quick punch.
00:56:59That's all I want you to do.
00:56:59Get the fuck out of there.
00:57:01You're fighting his fighting, you little shit.
00:57:03You understand?
00:57:08A lot of action in that round.
00:57:09Let's look at a piece of it.
00:57:10There's a right that landed a little high on Hagrid's dome.
00:57:15That was one of the better rounds of the fight.
00:57:17Quick punch.
00:57:18Quick punch.
00:57:18Although Duran tried very bravely and well in that round,
00:57:23I thought he kept looking more and more tired.
00:57:25The sight of the blood and Hagrid may awaken him.
00:57:33Hagrid's corner telling him, don't get in a slugging contest.
00:57:38The cut on Hagrid's eye is above the eyelid.
00:57:41Actually, in the fold of the eyelid.
00:57:43It does not appear to be serious.
00:57:46The puffiness is much more of a factor than the cut.
00:57:52Duran is just buying his time.
00:57:57He is waiting for a nut out crew to throw the right hand for the Hagrid's nut out.
00:58:01He is waiting for a nut out crew to throw the right hand for the right hand for the right hand.
00:58:31Put the right hand on the eye of Marvin Hagrid.
00:58:37And that's all Duran is really waiting for, Barry.
00:58:41He just throws a nut jab out.
00:58:44Nothing's really serious.
00:58:45And it comes with the right hand.
00:58:49The crowd is really into this fight.
00:58:51The crowd is fucking crazy.
00:59:06Hagrid got two in.
00:59:07Took one.
00:59:08Puts a right hand to the face of Duran.
00:59:10The crowd is really cuz it didn't say they gave him anything.
00:59:14They're more of the longeins.
00:59:15It's dobry.
00:59:16They're looking up to him.
00:59:17In this fight.
00:59:18T耶.
00:59:19It's been a tough, gritty fight from the opening bell.
00:59:38That was a good right hand by Duran that back tagged Laurent.
00:59:48Quick!
00:59:55That one was not particularly effective, but the second one was.
00:59:58The right hand of Duran is starting to do more damage to Heckler's out.
01:00:03And a couple of right hands that time by Duran.
01:00:16No more blood, but very definite puffiness under the eye of Heckler.
01:00:23You are winning the fight. You are the fourth champion of the world. Keep it up. Don't get too excited. Easy. Slow. You are the fourth champion of the world. Keep it up. He is done. He is done. Keep it up.
01:00:30Keep it up. Keep it up with the right. Keep it up with the right. Keep it up with the right.
01:00:37You are taking care of his eye. Keep on the eye. Keep punching on the eye. Use your head. Use your head. You are a better boxer.
01:00:44You are throwing this bitch all over the place now.
01:00:51He's done. Keep it up. Keep it up with the right. Keep it up with the right.
01:00:58They're taking care of his eye. Keep on the eye. Keep punching on the eye.
01:01:03Use your head. Use your head. You're a better boxer.
01:01:21Marvin Hagler feels he has to win these next two rounds.
01:01:28I have him well ahead in the fight.
01:01:32Hagler comes out in a hurry.
01:01:36Durant's corner seemingly think that he hasn't won.
01:01:40Should it go the full 15?
01:01:46Combinations all scoring. Durant stands there and mocks him.
01:01:49And Hagler right back on top of it.
01:02:00See, Durant just uses his head now.
01:02:04That was a good right hand by Roberto Durant.
01:02:11Right now, actually, Durant has Hagler fighting his fight.
01:02:14But what Hagler's actually doing, he's throwing a lot of little punches inside.
01:02:17Not much damage. You know, as Durant punches are far more effective.
01:02:22He's putting more of his body behind his punches.
01:02:24Whereas Hagler is basically trying to accumulate a lot of points.
01:02:40Durant sticks the right hand in.
01:02:42Durant getting off a little bit quicker than Hagler, too.
01:02:44Durant has Hagler a little bit frustrated.
01:03:04What's with the right hand?
01:03:05Durant playing games, but the psychological game is a big one.
01:03:32Durant now has made a counterpuncher.
01:03:34He ties to Hagler up inside, gets back, and throws his own series of punches.
01:03:43That left eye is really bad now on Marvin Hagler.
01:03:49And now there's blood alongside the eye of Roberto Durant.
01:03:52It may be blood from Hagler's eye.
01:03:54That's possible. We'll try to see.
01:03:55He's on the side of Durant's face, but I think it could be your right from the left eye of Marvin Hagler.
01:04:01And I believe it is.
01:04:02Now blood flowing rather freely from alongside the eye.
01:04:05And I think that's a different cut than the first one.
01:04:07And now you'll see, I believe Durant's going to turn his right hand to a right hook.
01:04:15This is turning into a brawl here.
01:04:17And the brawl is Roberto Durant's fight.
01:04:22I think it's a big round play.
01:04:35That's the way I'm going to...
01:04:36Come on, quick, come on.
01:04:37That's a big round play, big round play, big round play.
01:04:40Big round play.
01:04:41Okay, that's the last round coming up.
01:04:43Looks like that, Marvin.
01:04:44He did a very goddamn round.
01:04:45He did every round.
01:04:47He did every round.
01:04:48That's right.
01:04:49Keep hitting at the cut, you're going to win in this last round, keep hitting at the cut, remember this is the last round, take it easy, look how you got him, last round don't worry about nothing, don't worry about the cut or nothing, understand, that's right, okay, big round this round, let's go, yeah, all right
01:05:19You are the best in the world, keep it up, it's only three more minutes
01:05:25I think Roberto Duran's corner said it for all of us, there are three minutes left, Duran's or rather Hagler's corner said, don't worry about the cut, just get out there
01:05:44If anything is going to happen, it's going to happen this round, Barry
01:05:47A lot of people here paid $600 to sit ringside and I'll tell you, that's about a dollar a punch
01:06:05Duran should just stand there and wait for Hagler to punch, but what he's doing now is trying to block his shot, but instead he's getting Hagler up to get his punches off
01:06:18Hagler scores with a good left hand, but Duran's right in front of him, his knees went for a moment
01:06:24Get out of the way
01:06:26Duran ties Hagler up after a right hand did get in, Duran content to counterpunch in this final round
01:06:47It's been a very technical fight on Duran's part
01:06:56Yeah, both men have fought a very smart fight actually
01:06:59Do you know what?
01:07:13You know, you know, you want to optimize a lot time, a lot of people...
01:07:18Durant falling at it, scores with a combination
01:07:20This one very likely is going to be in the hands of the judges
01:07:23The hands of the judges coming down toward the one-minute mark, Durant's in trouble, Hagler's on top of him, Durant backs off.
01:07:30Hagler swarming after him, trying to put him away. Durant's legs are a little bit wobbly.
01:07:40Those body shots now really starting to take their toll, 45 seconds remaining in the fight.
01:07:48Durant just pawing at Hagler.
01:07:53Durant giving it what seems to be his last effort here.
01:08:06Hagler comes right back on him.
01:08:13This one will be in the hands of the judges.
01:08:17The belt can save a fighter in the 15th round.
01:08:20If you want an editorial on this fight, let the crowd give it to you.
01:08:33Roberto Duran, it is obvious, seems to think he has the fight won.
01:08:47There have been some questionable decisions as we mentioned here in Las Vegas, not only tonight but historically.
01:08:48And now it will be decided by an international panel.
01:09:03I think it will be decided by an international player.
01:09:06They always say, Ray, that you have to take the fight to the champion.
01:09:08And I do think it's safe to say that Durant did take the fight to Marvin Hagler, at least early and late.
01:09:13I was very impressed with Roberto Duran. I'm also impressed with the determination of Marvin Hagler.
01:09:19And let's go to the ring announcer for the official decision.
01:09:26Here is the decision of the judges.
01:09:29Judge Guy Jokers scores 144, 142.
01:09:39Judge Yasaka Yoshida scores 146, 145.
01:09:45For the winner of a unanimous decision, and still, the unanimous unit, still-wake central in the room, Marlon Henkler.
01:10:06Well, there is the decision. I can't say it comes as a great surprise.
01:10:11It was very close.
01:10:13Two judges having it with just one point, separating the two men.
01:10:18And it did seem to be a fight that was just about that close.
01:10:21Well, I think the last round was a determinative factor.
01:10:23And for a very close fight in the championship match, it boils down to the last round.
01:10:28And Hagler came on very strong.
01:10:30Okay, right now let's go up to Larry Merchant, who is with the winner and still the champion,
01:10:34Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Larry?
01:10:36You started to flow over him in the middle of the rounds, and then all of a sudden, mysteriously,
01:10:41in the 11th round, you started to dance around and take the round off.
01:10:44What was that?
01:10:45That's because our strategy was to try to suck him in.
01:10:47He was using my strategy on me, trying to, you know, trying to suck him in and hit me with the right hand.
01:10:52So I found out that he wasn't going with that, and I found out that I was more effective going in right-handed.
01:10:57So then I went back at him the same way.
01:10:59Did you know you had to win the last two rounds to win the fight?
01:11:01Definitely.
01:11:02I felt as though it was very leery out here in Las Vegas, especially by the WBA and WBC.
01:11:07So close to that Panama thing and whatever.
01:11:10And plus behind what had happened to me here behind the title with Anthony Furman.
01:11:14Thank you so much, Marvin Hagler. Congratulations again.
01:11:16I want to thank everybody who helped me to achieve this day in my career.
01:11:20This is a very happy moment for me.
01:11:22And I want to thank my wife and my kids and everybody, and next time you see a better Marvin Hagler.
01:11:27Is Roberto Duran the best fighter you've ever fought?
01:11:29Well, he was very experienced, and that's what I found out.
01:11:32I think I picked up that experience now from him.
01:11:34Thanks again, Marvin.
01:11:36All right, Leonard, let me ask you your impressions of Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
01:11:39Coming into the fight, they say he hasn't really fought anybody very tough.
01:11:42Well, he fought somebody tough tonight.
01:11:43Well, I think Hagler's display tonight, it only made me believe, it made the public believe,
01:11:49that this guy's really a great champion, a great fighter.
01:11:52He was in the ring with a great champion, a great fighter.
01:11:54Styles make fights better, and the fact that Roberto Duran had those ingredients
01:11:58that made it difficult for Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
01:12:00All right, Roberto Duran definitely distinguished himself as a challenger tonight.
01:12:04He will be heard from again, I feel quite certain about that.
01:12:07And right now, he's in the ring with Larry Merchant.
01:12:09Roberto, what was your plan for this fight?
01:12:12What was your plan for this fight?
01:12:14I knew I could beat him, but in the fifth round I did hurt my hand, so I couldn't follow through with my right hand.
01:12:29When you cut his eye late in the fight, it seemed that you were being deliberate and trying to get to it,
01:12:34and he was landing a lot of punches while you were trying to punch his eye.
01:12:38When you cut his eye late, he said that he was following the plan of following his eye late in the eye.
01:12:44Correct, that's right.
01:12:46That's what he tried to do.
01:12:47He was a jerk, he just confused me because he was a jerk.
01:12:50I got a little confused, he was a softball, I got a little confused.
01:12:53But he could knock me out.
01:12:56Do you feel that you've shown the great heart of the champion that everybody knew before by fighting him as well as you did?
01:13:03If I haven't shown it, the public knows that I did show it.
01:13:13Tell us what he thinks of Marvin Hagler.
01:13:15The opinion of Marvin Hagler.
01:13:17He's just a champion, he can't do very much to me.
01:13:24I did get a little weak in the seventh round.
01:13:31Thank you very much, Roberto.
01:13:33I did get a little weak in the seventh round.
01:13:38Thank you very much, Roberto.
01:13:40Roberto Duran has never given an opponent credit,
01:13:43so merely by him admitting that marvelous Marvin Hagler is a champion,
01:13:47it's practically a rave review.
01:13:49Hagler is back with us again in Boston.
01:13:52Marvin, why couldn't you knock out Roberto Duran?
01:13:55Well, first of all, I think Roberto Duran fought a very defensive fight.
01:13:59Again, like I said, when a guy fights very defensive, it's kind of hard to hit him with a solid blow.
01:14:05His intention is not to try to win the fight, but merely to try to hang in there.
01:14:11You've said in the past that you wanted to meet a great opponent to bring out the best in you.
01:14:16Did Roberto Duran bring out the best in you?
01:14:19Yeah, I feel as though that I learned something in that fight.
01:14:22I'm quite sure that it did bring out the best to me, but in the later rounds,
01:14:26I showed the public out there that I could do a 15th round.
01:14:29I was very impressed, even with my performance on how strong and how fast I finished in the 14th and 15th round.
01:14:37Okay, Marvin, let's go back to some of the earlier rounds and run over again with us first round three.
01:14:46Okay, I feel right here in round three that I was finally getting things together.
01:14:50I'm even beating him in the inside of his own game.
01:14:53And I feel as though I did better when I switched over right-handed.
01:14:56Now I realize that I can't have this guy come to me.
01:15:00I got to go to him, and that's basically what I did.
01:15:05I felt as though I shook him up in this round here too.
01:15:08And when you ever see Duran start to hold on, that's not Duran's style.
01:15:16You're a little bit tight out there.
01:15:17Don't try and knock him out every punch.
01:15:19That's not the name of the game.
01:15:20He's setting back on you, see?
01:15:21Yeah, that's what he's trying to do.
01:15:22I'm trying not to fall in the trap.
01:15:23Don't fall in the trap.
01:15:24Don't fall in the trap.
01:15:25Don, come on!
01:15:27And so then I looked.
01:15:28I was heading back on you.
01:15:29That's basically what Duran wanted me to do was to lean forward and try to hit me with
01:15:31the uppercut.
01:15:38This basically what Duran wanted me to do was to lean forward and try to hit me with the
01:15:39uppercut and the hook.
01:15:45And you can see right there that I'm a little tight there because I'm missing big blows.
01:15:50Through the first three rounds, Roberto Duran was slightly ahead.
01:15:54and no one really disputed that.
01:15:56In the fourth round, Marvin Hagler began to play catch-up.
01:15:59In the fifth round, one official had it for Duran,
01:16:02one for Hagler, and one even.
01:16:04It wasn't an easy fight to score.
01:16:07Marvin, were you confused by Duran early in the fight?
01:16:11Was his little right hand getting into you?
01:16:13Why weren't you able to be more dominant then?
01:16:16Well, in the first couple rounds there,
01:16:18you know, the first round was more or less like a chess and checker.
01:16:22I think the second round was I kind of figured
01:16:25that he wasn't going to fight the style that we anticipated.
01:16:28Third round, I started putting...
01:16:31We figured that we had to change up our strategy,
01:16:34and I think that's what happened there.
01:16:37I started using more, going more to the right-hand side,
01:16:40catching with right-hand left hooks.
01:16:42By the sixth round, that strategy was beginning to work very well.
01:16:47As you see right here, my punches are starting to come off,
01:16:52and I think this round here, I put more pressure on Duran right here
01:16:56because I've seen him starting to huff and puff.
01:16:59He's starting to breathe real heavy on the inside of there.
01:17:10These are the type of shots that I really needed,
01:17:12just letting the punches come out without being real tight.
01:17:14Just let him out, and as you notice,
01:17:16I was doing a lot better on the right-hand side.
01:17:19And I think this kind of shocked Duran how well he didn't expect me
01:17:23to fight this type of fight, beating him at his own game.
01:17:28You can see that his punching power really...
01:17:30He really had nothing in his punches,
01:17:32so I was able to take chances in there at this time.
01:17:34This is one of my best rounds right here
01:17:45because the punches were really coming out great for me,
01:17:48from either side.
01:17:50But I was more effective on the right-hand side, as you see.
01:17:55As you can see, these punches here,
01:17:57Duran never gets hit by these types of shots here,
01:17:59and this would even amaze Duran.
01:18:03I think right here was the controlling round
01:18:05to see basically who was going to be boss in this fight.
01:18:10And basically right here,
01:18:11I really wanted to see what type of punching power Duran had
01:18:15when he had nothing.
01:18:15I like him.
01:18:16I feel good.
01:18:17He's trying to time me again.
01:18:18He's trying to time that right.
01:18:19He's trying to time that.
01:18:21When you come in and throw that straight right-hand at you, see?
01:18:24He's pushing right-handed.
01:18:25You feel comfortable right-handed, don't you?
01:18:27I felt very comfortable right-handed,
01:18:29and he kind of confused Roberto Duran a little bit there.
01:18:35He's playing that waiting game.
01:18:37Wait, wait.
01:18:38He's waiting for me to throw out my jab there
01:18:40so that he can counter with the quick right hand.
01:18:44The scoring in the middle rounds was the most controversial.
01:18:47Guy Jutras, the Canadian official,
01:18:50gave Marvin Hagler a two-point round in the sixth,
01:18:53which seemed excessive.
01:18:54But Marvin Hagler did forge ahead narrowly on all cards
01:18:58by the end of the 11th round.
01:19:00The controversy was that it seemed that he had dominated
01:19:03most of those rounds,
01:19:04and he didn't get credit for them.
01:19:06Marvin, you seem to be rolling over Duran in those middle rounds.
01:19:11Why didn't you try to impose your strength
01:19:14and your conditioning on him
01:19:15rather than back off as you did in the 11th round?
01:19:18Well, first of all, I started getting things going.
01:19:22As you know, in the sixth round,
01:19:24I felt as though it was my best round.
01:19:26We really started putting a strategy together now
01:19:28that I had to go with.
01:19:31And I felt as though that a lot of times
01:19:34in those middle rounds,
01:19:35that the bell would end at the wrong times.
01:19:38But the 11th round,
01:19:40it was kind of where I figured that I'll start
01:19:44putting my strategy together,
01:19:46which I was training for seven hard weeks about.
01:19:49And I figured if I can try to draw leads
01:19:52to get him to suckle in,
01:19:54to make him kind of mad,
01:19:55you know, how if you intimidate Duran,
01:19:57you know, he goes off.
01:19:58If you had it to do all over again,
01:19:59would you jump on him in those rounds now
01:20:02and try to just out-strength him?
01:20:04Yeah, I would basically,
01:20:05now that I know how to fight Duran,
01:20:07I would put the pressure on him.
01:20:10I would have to punch every second of the rounds.
01:20:13And I would, that's what I have to do.
01:20:14I basically have to put the pressure on him.
01:20:16By letting up on Duran in that 11th round,
01:20:19he gave him hope and he gave him a rest.
01:20:22And Duran jumped on Hagler in the 12th.
01:20:27Right here in this round here,
01:20:29the 12th round,
01:20:30Duran would just try to get off a couple rounds
01:20:32with the right hand.
01:20:33And I think that by catching him
01:20:35with that quick right hand a couple of times,
01:20:36more went in the judge's eye.
01:20:39But basically I kept the pressure on him
01:20:41and I tried to get him to throw those punches.
01:20:44I had to find an opening
01:20:46and the only way that I can be able to counter him
01:20:49off of him was for him to get him to throw punches.
01:20:52As you can see,
01:20:53I'm bleeding here in the 12th round.
01:20:57And I thought it was the later round.
01:21:00So you kind of like have to start fighting now.
01:21:03I was a little bit worried about the eye,
01:21:05but I waited to get back to the corner.
01:21:13Last round, don't worry about nothing.
01:21:14We're about to cut or nothing.
01:21:15That's it?
01:21:15Yeah, that's right.
01:21:16As you can see,
01:21:28when I came back out,
01:21:29I was a lot stronger and more determined now
01:21:32to put Duran out of there
01:21:34if I could find the shot
01:21:35before that eye started swelling.
01:21:37And this is the 15th round
01:21:40and I was really hurting Duran really bad.
01:21:43Wanted to get one solid shot over
01:21:45because he was breathing through his mouth
01:21:46very heavily.
01:21:50And I just had to concentrate
01:21:52on the body and the head.
01:21:56Making him punch.
01:21:58And that's where I can find that opening.
01:22:01This is what Duran wasn't doing
01:22:02in the beginning of the round.
01:22:03He wasn't punching with me.
01:22:05Right here, Duran knew,
01:22:11he knew that he wasn't stronger than me.
01:22:17And he's not used to being hit like this.
01:22:19He couldn't understand it
01:22:20and none of his punching power
01:22:22had no effect on me.
01:22:25And I tried to tell him right here
01:22:26to this fight here
01:22:27that I knew I had
01:22:28at least 11 rounds of this fight here
01:22:31telling me he wasn't nothing.
01:22:33He's a bad sportsman,
01:22:34so now I'm trying to tell him
01:22:36how do you like it.
01:22:38Duran won both the 12th and 13th rounds
01:22:41and that put him ahead
01:22:42on two of the official scorecards.
01:22:45That brought us to the 14th and 15th rounds
01:22:48which Marvin Hagler swept convincingly.
01:22:52Marvin, did you really feel
01:22:53you were behind going into the 14th round
01:22:56or were you just afraid you might be behind?
01:22:59No, I felt as though that I was winning
01:23:01every round from there on
01:23:04except the 11th round where,
01:23:07again, I told you where we started dancing
01:23:09but there was no punches thrown
01:23:10in that round at all.
01:23:12So I couldn't really see how they gave Duran
01:23:14that round.
01:23:16The 13th round, I think that's when I got
01:23:18the headbutt from Duran
01:23:19and my eye kind of started swelling.
01:23:22Basically then I knew that
01:23:24I would really have to
01:23:25end this fight
01:23:26quicker so that
01:23:28my eye wouldn't
01:23:29block my vision.
01:23:33After this fight,
01:23:34the aura of invincibility
01:23:36that had been on you before
01:23:38no longer seems to be there.
01:23:40Do you feel that's a good thing
01:23:42for you or not a good thing?
01:23:44Well, it could,
01:23:45maybe it could mean
01:23:46a bigger payday for me
01:23:47to get these guys
01:23:48to come out of hiding
01:23:49but it also showed the world
01:23:51that I could do 15 rounds
01:23:53very strong
01:23:54and as you know,
01:23:56the 14 to 15 round
01:23:57just behind being in Vegas,
01:23:59it gets you a little skeptical
01:24:01out there
01:24:01so I knew that I had to
01:24:03pour it on
01:24:03just to be more precise
01:24:04with my favorite.
01:24:06Thank you so much
01:24:06for being with us,
01:24:07marvelous Marvin Hagler.
01:24:09You know, in a sense,
01:24:11Marvin Hagler
01:24:11was in a no-win situation.
01:24:13Had he gone out
01:24:14and knocked out
01:24:15Roberto Duran
01:24:15in two or three rounds,
01:24:17everyone would have said,
01:24:18see, he just beat up
01:24:19a bloated lightweight.
01:24:21By going the distance
01:24:22and still winning,
01:24:23they were saying,
01:24:24see, he's not really
01:24:26that good.
01:24:27How do you win?
01:24:28Well, you win by winning
01:24:30and in this fight,
01:24:31in a sense,
01:24:32both fighters did win.
01:24:34Roberto Duran
01:24:35gave the best he could.
01:24:37He tried very hard to win.
01:24:39He was in it for 15 rounds.
01:24:41The champion
01:24:42did what he had to do
01:24:43to win.
01:24:45So, we did have,
01:24:46in the end,
01:24:47a real celebrity bash.
01:24:49And now let's go back
01:24:50to ringside
01:24:52in Puerto Rico.
01:24:55Alright, thank you very much,
01:24:56Larry,
01:24:56and let's talk for a moment
01:24:57about the fight
01:24:58that we saw in Las Vegas.
01:24:59A lot of the press, really,
01:25:00during the course of the week
01:25:01said, what did you think
01:25:01of the fight?
01:25:02They didn't think too much of it.
01:25:03Frankly, I thought it was
01:25:04a fighter's fight,
01:25:05a tactical fight.
01:25:05I thought it was a very
01:25:06technical fight,
01:25:07mainly on the part of
01:25:08Roberto Duran.
01:25:09Duran made it very difficult.
