Iconic Fox comedy 'Arrested Development' celebrates the 15th anniversary of its premiere this year, here's a primer on its star-studded cast and what they've been up to in the years since.
Transcript
00:00Arrested Development returned to Netflix on May 29 for its highly anticipated fifth season.
00:06The series originally debuted in 2003, and despite earning several Emmy and Golden Globes
00:10nominations, the cult comedy was cut short in the middle of its third season. It was rebooted
00:14by Netflix, however, for a fourth season in 2013, and the dysfunctional Bluth clan is now back
00:19for more. Like the Blues themselves, the Arrested Development stars never fully disappeared,
00:24and as they return to our screens, we take a look back at the cast and what they've been up to
00:28since the show premiered 15 years ago. Jason Bateman's self-righteous deadpan as Michael,
00:32the only person willing to take on the nitty-gritty details of managing his family's
00:36finances after his father's arrest, catapulted him to mainstream stardom. He won a Golden Globe
00:41for his performance and went on to enjoy starring appearances in Horrible Bosses,
00:46Identity Thief and Mr. McGoriam's Wonder Emporium. However, Bateman's return to the awards circuit
00:50has only occurred in the last year, when he broke from the comedy genre to star in Ozark
00:55as a financial planner who was blackmailed into helping a drug dealer with a money laundering
00:59operation. Bateman was nominated for a Golden Globe for his part in the Netflix series,
01:03whose second season is due out soon. Portia de Rossi had been a household name years before
01:07appearing as Michael's ditzy twin sister Lindsay on Arrested Development. From 1997 to 2002,
01:12she starred in the lawyer dramedy Ally McBeal, and after Arrested Development's cancellation,
01:16she took on guest roles in numerous TV shows, including Scandal, Nip Tuck and The Santa Clarita Diet.
01:22In 2010, she released her memoir Unbearable Lightness, a story of loss and gain which
01:27addressed her struggles with eating disorders. Since 2004, she's been married to talk show
01:31superstar Ellen DeGeneres. Tambor's portrayal of the scheming Bluth family patriarch and his
01:36pot-loving twin brother built on his successful stint on the late-night talk show sitcom
01:40The Larry Sanders Show. Tambor won both a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his starring role
01:44on Amazon's Transparent, but in late 2017, numerous women, including a former assistant
01:49and a Transparent co-star claimed he had sexually harassed them throughout his career.
01:53Tambor has since been removed from Transparent and opened up about those accusations in an
01:57interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year. In Arrested Development,
02:00Aaliyah Shawkat played Maybe, Lindsay and Tobias' rebellious adopted daughter,
02:04and her star has only continued to rise since. Shawkat has appeared in 2009's Whip It with Ellen Page,
02:09and in Transparent alongside Arrested Development co-star Jeffrey Tambor. But a big break has come in the form of
02:14the critically beloved TBS show Search Party, where Shawkat stars as Dori Seif, an amateur Brooklyn
02:19detective who investigates the disappearance of a college acquaintance and quickly gets in over
02:24her head. Before he landed the role of Job, a failed magician trying to prove himself to his family,
02:29Will Arnett was ready to swear off TV pilots after appearing in a series of unsuccessful ones.
02:34Luckily, he gave it one last shot, and his performance on the show, bolstered by an Emmy nomination,
02:38launched his career. Arnett currently voices the title role in Netflix's critically acclaimed BoJack
02:43Horseman, and has also starred in 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and 2017's Lego Batman movie.
02:49He has guest starred in a number of TV shows, including 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation,
02:54and he appeared in 2007 figure skating comedy Blades of Glory as sibling skaters with his zen
02:58wife Amy Poehler. Michael Cera successfully turned his uber-awkward teen character George Michael
03:03into a brand, playing similar roles in Superbad, Juno and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. In 2016,
03:09he appeared as a hot dog trying to escape a supermarket in Sausage Party,
03:13and as a talented celebrity gambler in 2016's Molly's Gang. He can currently be found on Broadway,
03:18playing opposite Chris Evans on stage in Lobby Hero. Jessica Walter was critically praised for her
03:22role as Bluth family matriarch Lucille Bluth, which earned her an Emmy nomination. Many of
03:26Lucille's memorable quotes have been immortalized as gifts and memes. Prior to stepping into Lucille's
03:31expensive shoes, Walter appeared in 1966 film Grand Prix and in Clint Eastwood's play Misty For Me in 1971.
03:38After Arrested Development, Walter voiced Mallory Archer on the FX animated show Archer, a character
03:43with numerous similarities to Lucille Bluth herself. Tony Hale's run as Lucille's favorite child,
03:48Buster Bluth, at Arrested Development helped him corner a niche of well-meaning but blundering
03:52characters who are hopelessly dedicated to women who mistreat him. His performance in HBO's Veep
03:57as Gary, someone who worships his boss despite the sheer lack of respect she offers him,
04:01napped him Emmy Awards in 2013 and 2015. He also recently appeared as a nosy vice-principal in
04:07the gay teen romance movie Love, Simon. To read more on the cast of Arrested Development then and now,
