00:00How does a guest star make the most of their limited screen time to just maybe get an Emmy
00:04nom for Outstanding Guest Actor or Actress? The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Tiffany Haddish,
00:09Bryan Cranston, Jane Lynch and more about their on-screen challenges while guest starring
00:14on some of this year's most buzz-worthy shows. This is your Emmy update from The Hollywood
00:18Reporter News. In the ninth season of HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm, Bryan Cranston plays
00:22Dr. Templeton, the latest in a long line of Larry's therapists. So what was the biggest
00:27challenge? According to Cranston, Larry David gave me a half-page outline, saying the only
00:32information that is necessary to come out is that I love truffles and that he didn't like the chair
00:37that I supplied for my patients. The rest was all completely made up.
00:41You told Cheryl?
00:42Yeah, I told her you love truffles. Yeah.
00:45There's been a breach of the patient-doctor confidentiality.
00:49He added,
00:49I decided on an approach to my character. I wanted him to be agreeable, soft, accommodating,
00:54and charitable in his comments, which I had a feeling would irk Larry somewhat, and it did.
00:59Anything that you think would naturally irritate Larry really makes him laugh.
01:03Meanwhile, Tiffany Haddish hosted Saturday Night Live back in November, performing a standup
01:07routine in which she memorably discussed wearing the Alexander McQueen gown she bought for the
01:11Girls Trip premiere to get the most bang for her buck.
01:14This is a Alexander McQueen, okay? It's a $4,000 dress. I'm gonna wear this dress multiple times.
01:21The comedian told THR about the experience,
01:24I lost about four pounds on the SNL diet. We worked so hard on that show all week that there was barely
01:29any time to eat. She continued,
01:31Comedy vet Jane Lynch plays Sophie Lennon on Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
01:52The character is also a well-known comedian who on stage plays an overweight, vulgar queen's housewife,
01:58when in reality, she is a refined, elegant woman living a life of luxury.
02:02She told THR,
02:03Over on Showtime's The Shy, Common, who also serves as an executive producer, portrays Rafiq,
02:21a Muslim brother and the leader of the local mosque who tries to help Ronnie get his life back on track.
02:26Come by when you're ready to lay that burden down.
02:28Say ain't got no burden. Everybody's got one.
02:33He revealed to THR,
02:34I shot all my episodes in one day, and it was like, okay, I've got to really get it done right.
02:39I felt a duty and a responsibility to reflect the people from the inner city in an honest way,
02:44and I wanted people who practice Islam to feel respected.
02:47The rapper and actor added,
02:49To play this character, I visited prisons in California.
02:52I went to these places and met just human beings.
02:55I realized that even though this person has committed a murder, I still have compassion for him.
02:59And Dawson's Creek star James Van Der Beek joins Modern Family as Bo Johnson,
03:03the baby daddy of Cam's sister, who was recently released from jail.
03:07Cam, I get it, alright? I made a lot of mistakes, but like my plasma, I decided to be positive.
03:14He told THR how he got the role. Steve Levitan called and said,
03:18We've got something for you, but I don't have a script yet.
03:20He told me Bo was in jail for punching a police horse in the face,
03:24which is pretty much all I needed to hear.
