00:00The ice looks great, like there's a solid inch in there, right?
00:18This is like a super informal track walk.
00:21Today I just want to see the ice.
00:23I can already see it's going to push me flat right now.
00:27We don't get very much time on the track.
00:30It's a race against the clock.
00:32One of the unique things about being a bobsleigh pilot is you have to have a couple screws loose to do what we do.
00:44It's an adrenaline rush that I can't describe.
00:50You feel awake.
00:53You feel alive.
00:55But for any athlete, it's all about staking your claim at the Olympics.
01:02You think this will take gold for Canada?
01:04One for 14 and another medal for this Canadian team.
01:08De Bruyne wins an Olympic medal.
01:10Now it's a tie between Canada and Germany for the gold medal.
01:14For Canada, all of a sudden it was one of the top Olympic sports.
01:18The most successful sport in all of Canada.
01:21Since 1998, Canada was winning medals at every Olympics.
01:26For Canada in the gold and they do it again.
01:28On the women's side, it's only ever been USA, Germany and Canada have won all the Olympic medals.
01:33Canada will be world two.
01:35Unbelievable.
01:36The best athletes, best drivers and best equipment.
01:41Truly the glory days of Canadian bobsled.
01:45Nobody could walk with us.
01:47But then it just completely fell apart.
01:50Support for BCS is on thinning ice.
01:54Current and former athletes are calling for a change in management, citing bad governance and a toxic culture.
02:00The sports started going downhill.
02:03One of this country's most decorated Olympians, Kaylee Humphries, is to leave Team Canada and compete for the United States.
02:10Canadian Olympic bobsleigh medalist Christine De Bruyne suspended three years for doping violation.
02:17There's not that many positives in the last few years of this organization.
02:21We lost our way a little bit, but things were about to get way worse.
02:26People in Calgary are saying no to the Olympics.
02:30Well over half, 56% of Calgarians saying they're not interested in hosting the 2026 Games.
02:36Dismantling the top of the bobsled track is now underway at Winsport.
02:42Losing that track is a big blow.
02:44It's like we went to sleep and had a nightmare.
02:49Like, it's the worst thing you could possibly imagine.
02:54You know, you don't get funding unless you're getting results.
02:57But it's really hard to get results if you don't have any funding.
03:01It's a bit of a vicious cycle.
03:03Results have been getting worse.
03:06Drop down in the rankings.
03:11And medals bring notoriety to the program.
03:15You get more media attention, sponsors.
03:18The money starts rolling in.
03:19And you can use that to generate even more medals.
03:25So we're really trying to push hard for the next two years before the Olympic Games.
03:31Our athletes, they're all looking for redemption.
03:41You were going to get a decent entrance into 12 regardless, but I like you made a change.
03:49Yeah.
03:50I've been coaching now for 10 years.
03:51I've seen every step in Cynthia's program.
03:54We expect more out of her now.
03:56The Olympics is the pinnacle of sport.
03:59It's what we're all training for.
04:01And I think this is the year that it's going to happen.
04:04Growing up, I started off in shot put and hammer.
04:08Loved it.
04:09Ah!
04:10Went to the London 2012 Olympic Trials in Calgary and completely bombed out.
04:17But then I was fortunate enough to realize that bobsleigh is a second career sport.
04:23Cynthia Appiah.
04:25Cynthia Appiah.
04:26Cynthia Appiah.
04:27Cynthia Appiah.
04:28Cynthia Appiah.
04:2952-53 track record.
04:31Cynthia Appiah.
04:33Cynthia Appiah.
04:34Cynthia's been our top girl for a while now.
04:38She's had quite a bit of success.
04:40She's been trying to put herself as a podium threat every weekend.
04:44Really making that last push to these Olympics.
04:47Fred Woodford and Brad Griffith.
04:59And in the lead up to the Olympics I was like, shoot, I might actually win this.
05:04A little bump and you can see their weightless first.
05:07A little spurt!
05:08She over!
05:09She's over!
05:10She's over.
05:11idar &burn Smith.
05:12directoron Wilson crashing.
05:14Inexperience really bit me, and I finished in eighth place.
05:18And for Appiah, her hopes dashed.
05:22I was starting to worry that you were getting a mental block.
05:25Yeah.
05:26You changed.
05:27I did make a change.
05:28She'll be 35 at these next Olympics.
05:30It's time to perform.
05:32This is her window.
05:36Cynthia's got this nuclear weapon.
05:38And that's the way she starts in Monobob.
05:41She's bigger and strong.
05:43Bam.
05:44Woo!
05:48Monobob is just the one athlete.
05:53I have a lot of Monobob podiums, but I'm still itching to get that first two-woman podium.
05:59Come on!
06:03She wants to transition to being not just the Monobob threat.
06:07She wants to be the complete package.
06:13come on.
06:15Come on guys!
06:16Come on boys!
06:24Go, go, go, go!
06:25We've got some new rookies coming on the women's side and I want to see who's stepping up to the plate.
06:30And you know, trying to pick who I want on my team for the season.
06:33That new girl, Skylar's gonna be close.
06:40She should be pretty good at competing.
06:42She's NCAA.
06:43She excites me, yeah.
06:45Let's go, Skylar.
07:00Skylar's brand new.
07:02She's a tough athlete, competed at University of Arizona.
07:05Good job.
07:06And to see her come out and be up there with the top girls
07:09who've been racing on the World Cup, that's really promising for her.
07:12Like, you literally have pushed the same time I pushed.
07:15I pushed a 59 my first year, you pushed a 60.
07:17So you're, like, right on track,
07:19and the coaches definitely have their eyes on you.
07:21So you gave yourself a pat on the back.
07:22You did a really amazing job today.
07:24Oh, good.
07:25It was super exciting.
07:26My nerves are high.
07:27This is still super new to me.
07:29If testing goes well for you, the sky is the limit.
07:31If you come out and you push a massive number,
07:33you are going on to the top team.
07:35It doesn't matter that you're not experienced.
07:37They're gonna give you that shot.
07:41Congratulations on the week.
07:42Thanks.
07:43It sounds like Cynthia's already been chatting with you a bit
07:47about, like, maybe joining her team this season,
07:49and the next two months you could make some big strides
07:51and, like, be a force, like, right away in the World Cup.
07:54I hope so.
07:55That's the goal.
07:56I think you got a lot of big opportunities in this sport.
07:59Before this...
08:00Come on, Skyler!
08:02I competed in track and field.
08:05I was a heptathlete.
08:07I was usually 17th or 18th each year out of the whole U.S.
08:12That's kind of receiving.
08:14Track and field stopped being my dream.
08:20And that will put her out of the top ten.
08:23I was going to become a high school biology teacher
08:25at a local high school,
08:26but no athlete is fulfilled
08:28unless they, you know, make it to the big show
08:31at the Olympics.
08:34Brand new.
08:35Yeah.
08:36Oh, yeah.
08:37Yeah.
08:38It's every athlete's dream,
08:40and so my goal is to qualify for the 2026 Olympics.
08:44I'll just be, like, the anticipation.
08:49Killing me.
08:50Skyler really just came out of nowhere,
08:52and I think there's a great opportunity
08:54to really mould her
08:55into being one of the great ones in our sport.
08:57I'm excited.
08:58I'm really looking forward to it.
09:14Working with Sin was my first time on World Cup.
09:20Sin and I pushed really well together
09:21because she's so strong
09:22that she gets the sled moving right away.
09:27Then I have that top-end speed
09:28to get us going, like, over the crest,
09:30so we worked really well together.
09:33But we worked like the best of friends
09:36towards the end of the season.
09:37I think tensions were growing.
09:39This is going to affect her downtime here.
09:41Her visor pops open.
09:42Sin and I had a pretty bad crash in Altenburg.
09:44He basically got sucked out.
09:46I tore my hamstring tendon.
09:47Altenburg, it's a difficult track.
09:48It's easy to crash there.
09:49There was a bad crash on the Swiss team
09:51with some really bad injuries.
09:53And our thoughts go out to Sandro's family.
09:54The brakeman ejected and passed out,
09:55but no one caught the sled.
09:56And he was laying lifeless.
09:57So the sled came back and ran him over,
09:59shattered his hip, cut his femoral artery.
10:02He almost died.
10:03So there was some fear in the air.
10:04Cynthia and Leah crashed in training.
10:05The day it happened,
10:06the day it happened,
10:07the day it happened,
10:08it was the day it happened.
10:09And we realized that there was a bad crash
10:10on the Swiss team
10:11with some really bad injuries.
10:12And our thoughts go out to Sandro's family.
10:13The brakeman ejected and passed out,
10:14but no one caught the sled.
10:15And he was laying lifeless.
10:16So the sled came back and ran him over,
10:18shattered his hip,
10:21cut his femoral artery.
10:23He almost died.
10:26So there was some fear in the air.
10:28Cynthia and Leah crashed in training.
10:31The day after the Swiss kid had his bad accident.
10:36So we were already really scared to crash.
10:40Like someone almost died.
10:43It took people up.
10:44And so Leah chose not to do the race.
10:47She just said, I'm out.
10:48So Cynthia had to race with despair.
10:52You know, something like that,
10:54it can affect your relationship.
10:56We hadn't really talked much after world champs
11:01until like the first camp.
11:07I kind of went up to her and I was like,
11:08what are you planning to do this season?
11:09Because at this point I didn't know.
11:13So I said the fastest brakeman will be in my sled.
11:15And I went, okay, that doesn't sound like you mean me.
11:19Come on, Leah!
11:24It got to a point where after two years of working together,
11:26I wanted to see what else was out there.
11:28Maybe a change was needed for the both of us.
11:32The expectations I have on myself
11:34are more than anyone else puts on me.
11:36But I'm feeling good mentally and physically.
11:40I'm excited.
11:41I'm ready to go.
11:42Like race time cannot come soon enough.
11:44I think we're both going to thrive in our new partnerships.
11:59I can just walk our duffels over.
12:01Yeah.
12:02The brakeman has to put their trust in the pilot.
12:05As the pilot's driving down the track,
12:07I swear you can feel the brakeman behind you
12:09just wailing you.
12:13In the two-man bobsleigh,
12:14the pilot's job is to take the fastest line down the track
12:18with the least resistance possible.
12:20Let's go!
12:21Come on, Jay!
12:22Good job, bud.
12:23Big push!
12:25The brakeman is all about power.
12:26Here we go.
12:27At the start, they're accelerating the sled.
12:30It's a huge advantage if you enter the track
12:32with a high top speed.
12:33The brakeman gets in, holds himself as low as possible.
12:38Keeps himself aerodynamic and tight in the sled.
12:42At the end of the run, the brakeman pulls the brakes.
12:46Once you cross the finish line.
12:49Good job, Jay!
12:50It's really hard for a brakeman to push as fast as they can
12:55into this abyss and jump in the sled and put their head down
12:59if they don't trust the pilot they're behind.
13:01It's really important.
13:02The mechanics side of things is huge.
13:03Like, you need equipment running well in order to win a race.
13:07Being a farm girl is probably a little bit helpful in terms of getting my hands dirty and pulling wrenches.
13:22How often do you put the grease in there?
13:23You do it a couple times throughout the season.
13:24But you don't have to do it every single race or whatever.
13:25Yeah.
13:26All the girls have been around for a while, so it's like second nature to them.
13:27So they're going through it and I'm like, wait, what are you doing?
13:28Alright, ready?
13:29We'll just slide it.
13:30Two, three.
13:31Whoa, whoa!
13:32Okay.
13:33Oh, wait, I gotta go a little bit, I gotta go a little bit.
13:35I'm like, wait, I gotta go a little bit.
13:36I need equipment running well in order to win a race.
13:38I need equipment running well in order to win a race.
13:39Being a farm girl is probably a little bit helpful in terms of getting my hands dirty and pulling wrenches.
13:44How often do you put the grease in there?
13:45You do it a couple times throughout the season, but you don't have to do it every single race or whatever.
13:50Yeah.
13:51All the girls have been around for a while, so it's like second nature to them.
13:53So they're going through it and I'm like, wait, what are you doing?
13:56I'm trying to go a little.
13:57Yeah, always lift and slide, it helps.
13:59I do feel lost a lot of the time.
14:01This one will go on that side.
14:03This will go on the other side.
14:05So this one will go here.
14:06Yeah.
14:07With Skylar being new, Cynthia has to explain everything.
14:10Show her the system, show her how the sled works.
14:12And teacher, really, what is bobsled?
14:15Wait, so this is the front of it?
14:16Yeah, this will always be the front.
14:18Longer end.
14:19Short end will always point to the back.
14:21There's a risk of like, how is this person going to perform under pressure?
14:25These are my shims.
14:26Skylar came in with some great talent, but she hasn't been down the hill.
14:32It's all right?
14:33Yeah.
14:34It's yours, sir.
14:35Yeah.
14:36First day of sliding, nobody knows what's going on.
14:37One, two, three.
14:39There's one month at the start of the season in Whistler where we train together, we test equipment
14:59to prepare ourselves to go to the races.
15:02And it all culminates in Canadian championships.
15:06Day one, you come back and you're like, well, I remember what I'm doing.
15:11Our job as coaches is to keep them focused on executing what they can control.
15:15We just need to get them in the sled and shake off the rust.
15:20One minute to start.
15:22Track is clear for Cynthia Appiah from Lower Manage.
15:27Come on, girl.
15:28What makes Whistler scary is the speed.
15:32That two-story drop from the start, you're already going like 90 kilometres an hour by the
15:41second corner on a track that has 16.
15:43Most tracks, you're not hitting that 90-kilometre range until like halfway down the track.
15:49And then going anywhere from 120 to 150 kilometres an hour.
15:54This is serious.
15:55Like, what we do is actually really dangerous.
15:58Come on, come on.
16:00Let's go!
16:08Thanks, guys.
16:09How'd the first one go?
16:11Pretty good.
16:12Honestly, I didn't have the nervousness that I thought I'd have.
16:14Felt pretty nice being in the back of the sled again.
16:27Okay, Sin, nice line through 10.
16:29Just ease into this a tiny bit.
16:31I'm being picky here.
16:34Yeah, you went in too far and then caught it.
16:37Catch it nice and early but gently.
16:38Ready for two men tomorrow?
16:46Oh, yeah.
16:47Yeah.
16:48First two men for Guy.
16:49First guy.
16:50First run down the bobsleigh track is like nothing else.
16:53Yeah.
16:54As long as they pull the brakes.
16:55I know.
16:56She's gonna be fine.
16:58She'll be fine.
17:00Yeah, I think so.
17:08It takes a heavy set of balls to be able to go down Whistler as your first track.
17:25It's the most daunting experience.
17:31All you see is down.
17:35You can't even see the finish line from the top.
17:37Back.
17:38Set.
17:39Up.
17:40All right, let's go.
17:41Let's have fun.
17:43Yeah.
17:45I've never been down a bobsleigh track so I'm not too nervous.
17:49I'm a little nervous.
17:50We want everybody who wants to do it to get a shot to do it.
17:55But bobsleigh's not for everybody and if it's determined that it's not in your best interest to do this sport then we're gonna thank you for your time and say see you later.
18:08So where do these go?
18:09In the side?
18:10Yeah.
18:11Wherever feels comfortable.
18:12Here we go, Skyler.
18:13Come on, Sky.
18:14Come on, Sid.
18:15So, come on?
18:16Here we go, Skyler.
18:17Here we go.
18:18Here we go.
18:19Here we go.
18:20Here we go.
18:21So, Skyler.
18:22Here we go.
18:23Here we go.
18:31Start.
18:32Start.
18:33Up.
18:51Up, Up!
18:52Up!
19:05Go, da...
19:08Go, da...
19:17down!
19:18Go.
19:20She couldn't break exactly where it's supposed to break.
19:38First time going down the track from the top so...
19:40You did it!
19:48Oh yeah, there you go.
20:04How was that?
20:06Bumpy as .
20:12That was way bumpier than I thought.
20:14Yeah, good spot.
20:15Well done, dude.
20:16You think you're going to die.
20:17Yeah.
20:25Getting your head slammed into the brakes like that,
20:28no one could have prepared me for that, so.
20:31So much apprehension and fear on her face.
20:34Glazed eyes, white as a sheep look.
20:37Got the shakes a lot.
20:39I haven't felt anything like that.
20:41So it was weird and definitely a bit frightening.
20:44As a pilot, you see where you're going.
20:49You're controlling that sled.
20:51But as a brakeman, you've got your head down and your knees.
20:55That takes a lot of guts.
20:58Our sport is scary, so you need someone that has courage.
21:02I've coached a lot of athletes where the first experience they had with bobsleigh,
21:06they will leave the program and not come back.
21:10I'm really hoping everything works out with me and Skylar.
21:26If she decides this isn't for me, I'm going to pack it up and go home, I'm really hooped.
21:33I really put a lot of eggs into that Skylar basket.
21:38She seems super committed, but there's a lot riding on this.
21:51I'm not a contact sport kind of girl.
21:53I don't like the uncertainty of soccer where someone could just come in and take out your ACL.
21:58I've never been a rough and tumble girl.
22:00Even on the best run, it's rough.
22:02There's high g-force and it hits you fast and hard.
22:05And it's not a comfortable ride.
22:10Okay, let's go.
22:11Here we go.
22:14Back, set, up.
22:30She took a hit, but she kept it on.
22:40I smoked the wall coming out of corner four.
22:43I hit my face so I could only imagine what it was like for Skylar in the back.
23:00Oh, she got it.
23:01Oh, she got it.
23:05Oh.
23:09Holy .
23:10That one rocked me a bit.
23:11Yeah, that was a hard hit at a four.
23:15Sorry.
23:16We good?
23:20That was a, that was a rough hit.
23:23That was a mistake.
23:24Can you turn that camera off just for one second?
23:26I've never made that mistake before.
23:32You okay?
23:33It just scared me a bit.
23:35Yeah.
23:36It hurt in the moment.
23:37Yeah, yeah.
23:38No, that's, that's the lower back.
23:41What?
23:42For sure, that's the lower back.
23:43Yeah.
23:44It's hurting.
23:45It's hurting that stuff.
23:46Oh, .
23:47Oh.
23:48Oh.
23:54All right, we'll get it.
23:55Yeah.
23:56I haven't done that ever.
23:58So I'm just like pissed at myself.
24:00It's okay.
24:02I know.
24:03I'm already, I'm already feeling better.
24:06Skylar is surprisingly holding up.
24:08She's doing what a good brakeman does, which is, you know, get your pilot spirits back up when they're down in the dumps.
24:13One, two, three.
24:15Awesome.
24:18I was definitely a bit shaken up, but I'm still getting used to it.
24:21So.
24:22I'm so sorry.
24:23No, no, no.
24:24It spooked me in the moment, but I already feel better.
24:26Yeah.
24:27Every run is probably like equivalent to my first run.
24:32Like nervous system shot from the first week.
24:35Good one?
24:36She's a great driver, guys.
24:37I'm so sorry.
24:38That was awful.
24:39What a job.
24:40Coming into the season, I'm with a new pilot.
24:42I'm with Mackenzie.
24:43I cranked you out of six.
24:44I wasn't worried.
24:45I like to give fresh slate.
24:46I'm sorry.
24:47That was literally my worst run.
24:48I can't wait.
24:49I can't wait.
24:50If that was your worst run, I can't wait.
24:51I love you.
24:52I'm sorry.
24:53It's always interesting to see what teams end up together for Canadian championships.
24:57I'm sorry that I had nervous time.
24:58No, it's okay.
24:59Mackenzie is a good young driver that doesn't always get the fastest start times, and she's
25:04teaming up with Leah Walkenden, who's been one of the top brake women in Canada for the
25:10last few years.
25:11But I know you're worried about four.
25:12I'm sorry.
25:13I'm sorry.
25:14I'm sorry.
25:15I'm sorry.
25:16I'm sorry.
25:17I'm sorry.
25:18I'm sorry.
25:19I'm sorry.
25:20I'm sorry.
25:21I'm sorry.
25:22That was literally my worst run.
25:23I can't wait.
25:24If that was your worst run, I can't wait.
25:25I love you.
25:26I'm sorry.
25:27I'm sorry.
25:28I'm sorry.
25:29Leah has been put aside by her usual teammate, Cynthia.
25:33So you've got two girls that have something to prove, and that's really what we're looking
25:38for.
25:39That made me mad.
25:40I was like, oh .
25:41I think it weighs way heavier on the pilot if something bad happens.
25:45We need to succeed as a unit to knock down the other teams.
25:50that's really what we're looking for.
25:51I'm sorry.
25:52I've got a lot of people, but I'm not sure what's going on.
25:53I'm not sure what's going on.
25:54I'm not sure what's going on.
25:55I'm not sure what's going to do in the pilot.
25:56Alright underway we go, this is the Bump Slick Championship getting underway, this is the
26:19monoball competition. It's basically an inter-squad game, see where the team stacks up against
26:37each other, our top ranked. Canadian Championships is super important, it can set up your whole
26:45season, it can determine whether or not you're going to the World Cup or if it's determined
26:49that you know this sport isn't for you then yeah you're gonna get cut. Even though we're
26:57all competing for Team Canada we're also directly competing against each other and so you always
27:02want to be the top of your game. If you don't beat your own teammates you don't get to go
27:08compete against the rest of the world at the highest level. You only have a very small window
27:13of opportunity to achieve big things in this sport, but it's the opportunity right and
27:19pressure is a privilege. It's a shot to go do it.
27:23Are we doing sin race day? Sorry not today.
27:28They're nervous and they should be. For them it's a dress rehearsal for the season.
27:34Like in the second run you could have just held it a little longer.
27:37I mean it was probably this much off from perfect. I didn't have as many points last year so
27:44I'm I guess a little bit on the lower rank side.
27:49My goal is to compete in both the two women event and the monobob event and ideally be a medal threat in both.
27:58Cynthia and I we've had a really interesting relationship over the last decade because we've constantly been put against one another.
28:03Yeah, control copies were clear from above start through to men's where the barricade is set and secure for sliding from above.
28:20Outrun is clear track is cleared.
28:22Copy that control.
28:24Okay, here we go.
28:26We're at five minutes to start. Track is clear for Cynthia Appiah. Track is clear.
28:31Track is clear.
28:39Come on, let's go!
28:41Come on!
28:42Come on!
28:52Cynthia Appiah starting with a 5-4-6.
28:55Cynthia's so strong in the monobob, she should do well.
29:02Exiting quarter seven, that is known as the result of 32-5-4-3 there.
29:07Reasonable.
29:08A 132 kilometers of speed.
29:1427, 27 finish.
29:28Not my best run.
29:29I messed up with corporate corners.
29:32Coming into the race, I feel like I've been driving really well the last two weeks.
29:41And so, I had the expectation of myself to win, but you've got to really like enter into that process and just be present in the moment.
29:48Track is clear for Melissa Locos from Bob's Sky.
29:51I typically perform better when I'm having a good time.
30:10I sing in my helmet.
30:12People probably, I hope, don't hear me.
30:14But...
30:15Here we go, Mel!
30:16Here we go, Mel!
30:17Go, go, go, go!
30:18Go, go, go!
30:19Go, go, go!
30:20Go, go, go, go!
30:21Go, go, go, go, go, go!
30:22I have one of the greatest jobs in the world, so I should have fun doing it, right?
30:49Let's be honest, we're professional tobogganers, like, my job is fun.
31:01It's disappointing, but you just, you know, lick your wounds and move on to the next run.
31:07But does the first seat time still count?
31:11Yeah, it's a combined time.
31:13Yeah.
31:14Oh, both of them put together?
31:16Yeah.
31:17It's not just, like, best time?
31:18No, they don't choose your best from both sides of mine.
31:21Oh, I didn't know that.
31:22I didn't know that either.
31:23I thought it was the best one.
31:25Track is clear for Cynthia and Appiah from Bobstar.
31:29I want to win.
31:31I want Cynthia to come second.
31:33You know?
31:34Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go!
31:38Hurry up!
31:39Start there, 5.70.
31:45Up here, in fifth position after running number one.
31:57Struggling.
31:59Up here, 56.91 that run.
32:02Two runs, come by, 154.08.
32:09I'm really disappointed, thought I could have done a lot better, but I know man, yeah.
32:16Better shake it off and get ready for the two-man.
32:18Yeah.
32:20Cynthia didn't have a great race in the Monobob, but there's a chance Cynthia could do much better in the two-man with Skylar in the back.
32:27Yeah, I don't know. I'm not having a good time, that's for sure.
32:32Yeah.
32:33Oh yeah, she's good.
32:40Ooh, I spoke too soon.
32:44Okay.
32:45Oh yeah, she's good.
32:47Ooh, I spoke too soon.
32:49Okay.
32:50Okay.
32:51Okay.
32:52Okay.
32:53Okay.
32:54She's got enough of a lead, but she messed up.
33:01She's got enough of a lead, but she messed up.
33:22She got it.
33:23Okay.
33:24This is down and complete.
33:25First place low goals.
33:33Boston's a game of consistency, so fixed things on the second one that I screwed up on the first.
33:38Screwed up things on the second one that I didn't do in the first, but yeah.
33:42It was a good day.
33:43It was a good day.
33:44It was a good day.
33:45If you would have had two runs like you did on your second run and finished that second run, you would have won the World Cup by a lot.
33:55Yeah.
33:56That was a very good run.
33:57It was a very good run.
33:58That's the kind of run you need to do twice.
34:00Consistent.
34:01Yeah.
34:02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
34:08How you doing?
34:09I've had better days.
34:11That first run you had a little bit of trouble for and then second run at the bottom.
34:16Yeah.
34:17You were having a decent run on the second run and then, but you'd lost your speed.
34:20I know.
34:21This is race one, Cynthia.
34:23I'm not in the right headspace right now.
34:26I know that my teammates are actively cheering against me and that's hard to compete when you know that.
34:32Lonely at the top.
34:34I don't feel like I'm at the top.
34:36But you want to win.
34:38I know it's not the best.
34:40The reason it's lonely at the top is because everybody wants to be at the top.
34:44This is the one where the stamp goes outside.
34:45No, remember both the stamps are on the same side on this one.
34:49Do we have the wax off towel?
34:50We've got a little schmutz right here.
34:51Today is our two women Canadian championships race.
34:52We're just getting our sleds ready.
34:53So we're just getting our sleds ready.
34:54And we race in a couple hours.
34:55Do we have the wax off towel?
34:59We've got a little schmutz right here.
35:07Today is our two women Canadian championships race.
35:09The stamps are on the same side on this one.
35:12Do we have the wax off towel?
35:14Got a little schmutz right here.
35:17Today is our two women Canadian championships race.
35:19So we're just getting our sleds ready
35:21and we race in a couple hours.
35:24I always buy the best smelling cleaners and waxes.
35:28We had one that smelled like banana one year.
35:31What do you mean ew, it smelled good.
35:33No, it smelled real good.
35:35Yesterday was a wash.
35:37Today's a new day.
35:39New opportunity to put down two solid race runs,
35:42see what Skylar and I can do
35:43in our first official race together.
35:48Yesterday, there was an upset.
35:52I think a lot of people were happy.
35:54Things got shaken up.
35:56But if you're at the top,
35:57everyone's always coming to take your lunch money.
36:01Everyone's coming for your position.
36:03It's a tough place to be.
36:05So there was a lot of pressure on her.
36:07I'm like, you know what, like you've got to effing do this
36:11like for her basically, because I don't want her leaving
36:14this week and feeling defeated.
36:16That's like fuel for me.
36:21I would like to watch your second.
36:24It all comes back, really, those accidental oversteers.
36:32Yeah.
36:32Which I think you had a couple of those
36:33yesterday.
36:34Yeah.
36:35She has everything she needs to be successful,
36:36dare I say champion.
36:38Push your guts out.
36:39Yeah.
36:40Have a good race.
36:41Thanks, man.
36:42This is her window to perform.
36:46And it's wide open.
36:53This is Skyler's very first race.
36:55And I can tell you from experience,
36:58you're your pants a little bit.
37:03Here we go.
37:03This is a two women competition.
37:06Six slits here, a racing for this year's
37:09Canadian championships.
37:11Here you go, Sky.
37:12You know what you're doing.
37:12Do your job.
37:13That's it.
37:13We're underway.
37:14The track is clear for Cynthia Appiah and Skyler
37:17Sieben.
37:22Let's go, ladies.
37:27Hit.
37:27Let's go, go, go, go, go.
37:43We'll pick up this interval coming out
37:45under the text corner 7 and 31.88.
37:51141 kilometers an hour.
37:53There it is at 55.06.
37:57There it is.
37:58There it is.
37:59There it is.
38:00All right.
38:00Good job, man.
38:01Woo-hoo!
38:01Sorry, didn't see the start's on.
38:03It's all good.
38:04All right.
38:04You can hop out.
38:05Yeah.
38:06Nice run.
38:07All right.
38:08It was your first race.
38:11All good.
38:12Stay in those angles.
38:14Really hit the sled hard.
38:15Dig it out.
38:16Told Skyler to be long and strong in these first 10 meters
38:19because it's a very fast start.
38:21All right.
38:21Sounds good.
38:22Yeah, good job.
38:26The track is clear for me.
38:27I'm gonna move on.
38:28I'm gonna move on.
38:41A little bit of a smack around the exit.
38:43That was ugly.
38:44That is Melissa Lopez in the number three position there.
38:49Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo.
38:53I'm with Mackenzie, she's kind of at the bottom of the ranks, so we're coming into the race with a little bit of an underdog mentality.
39:05Leah's pushed with Cynthia in the past and kind of got a chip on her shoulder.
39:13I feel a lot of pressure to get her right in the race, and she can show everyone how good she drives.
39:18But I was shocked when we crossed the finish line in first.
39:27I was like, are you serious? Are you serious?
39:32That was great.
39:35The money.
39:39I'm so proud of you.
39:40The track is clear for Cynthia Appian, Skylar Sieben in front of the box store.
39:48She's being pushed aside and Skylar's pushed in.
39:51Let's go, Skylar. Let's go, Sid.
39:55Big push, ladies. Let's go.
39:59Let's go.
40:01Take it out.
40:03Start. Go.
40:05Dig. Dig. There you go.
40:07Don't wanna get it out.
40:10Follow us.
40:11Got a second round.
40:15Five, two gates, brother.
40:16Out there.
40:18Hedge.
40:26143 numbers an hour, still holding on to 2 gates.
40:30Three quarters an hour, still holding on to two teams.
40:33The obvious, not a season ago.
40:3654-6-7, we have the first year so far.
40:44Oh, sorry, that was so nothing I can do.
40:53Up here, Johnson, the lead with 149-73.
40:56We're down to the final two sleds, year 40, number two.
40:59Skyler, we've got something dynamic going on.
41:03Track is clear for Mackenzie Stewart and Leah Walken in for Bumstar.
41:07I looked at her and I was like, let's just have our day.
41:11Let's go, ladies.
41:13It's ours to lose, but it's not ours to lose because no one expects us to win.
41:186-100 is back from first.
41:29Let's get playing here.
41:32Line 39 is the start, 17-22 out of corner three.
41:37A good solid three-tenths, and that is increasing.
41:40This could be interesting.
41:45Exiting 7 at 3176, now that lead increasing.
41:52It's going on, 4-10 to the second, 141 kilometers an hour.
42:01Mackenzie Stewart and Leah Walken in for the first place with the R-494-3D.
42:07That was really good.
42:11I'm so proud.
42:13You're so proud.
42:15Good job, you're so proud.
42:20Good job, Mackenzie.
42:21I love you.
42:24Good job.
42:24And for you.
42:29I just meant so much that Mack got to show how good of a driver she is.
42:34Just to be honest, Leah wants to show Cynthia that she made the wrong choice.
42:38These girls have pride, and Leah kind of came out and stomped on it today, which is great
42:43to see.
42:44I don't think anybody's upset when something like that happens, you know what I mean?
42:47It's a good story.
42:48Except for Cynthia.
42:49Maybe, yeah.
42:50Cynthia wants to see her new break when doing good, but Cynthia has to be patient.
42:55In second place with a combined time of 1.49.73, Skylar Sieben and Cynthia Appiah.
43:04I'm kind of like hedging my bets that Skylar and I are the missing piece to getting me
43:10on that two-woman podium.
43:13This is the year that it's going to happen.
43:15And in first place, with a combined time of 1.49.43, gold medalist Leah Walkadon and Mackenzie
43:23Stewart.
43:28Mack helped me, I'm going to cry, sorry, re-find my love of ball setting.
43:39I had a really tough last few years, and I think you succeed when you're having to turn
43:47everyone in.
43:48We have this carrot called the Olympic Games.
43:52I think people will go through quite a bit to be an Olympian.
43:59Good job.
44:00What kind of motley?
44:08.
44:09.
