00:00My name is Pam Childs, and I'm doing a documentary on missing persons cases in Chicago.
00:06One of the cases that we're doing is Kiara Coles.
00:09Are you familiar?
00:12No, I'm not.
00:13Are you, um, you're not familiar with Kiara Coles at all?
00:21Hello?
00:22Yes.
00:23This is .
00:24May I help you?
00:26I don't mean any harm, no disrespect whatsoever.
00:29Just wanted to get an opportunity to talk.
00:32Ms. Pam, do you know they both have lawyers?
00:34So you might as well stop calling here, stop coming here until you talk to their lawyer,
00:40and their lawyer will tell you exactly what you need to do.
00:45I was born in Chicago.
00:48I grew up in Chicago.
00:50This is my city.
00:52I spent 20 years as a Chicago PD missing persons detective.
00:59But when I retired, the work never stopped.
01:03This job never leaves you.
01:06And my mission now is to return to the cases that others left behind.
01:13And find that one clue that can finally break the case.
01:26In a city like Chicago, most missing persons cases go unnoticed by the general public.
01:33But every now and then, a case takes the city by storm.
01:38Welcome to our additional coverage of the searcher, Kiara Coles.
01:42Her case classified as a high-risk missing persons investigation.
01:47On October 2nd, 2018, Kiara Coles, a 26-year-old expecting mother, vanished.
01:56Last known images of Kiara Coles, she was seen withdrawing money from an ATM.
02:01Got a call.
02:03She like, yes, they say Kiara's missing.
02:05Kiara's disappearance captured headlines across the city.
02:09And questions remain.
02:11Is Kiara alive?
02:13Is her baby okay?
02:15And is she ever coming home?
02:18Someone knows where Kiara is, and someone needs to speak up.
02:21It's all hands on deck.
02:23But within weeks, her family was forced to confront a darker reality.
02:30Kiara wasn't alone.
02:32She left with a man in her car.
02:34Bring her home, her and her baby.
02:37For five months, the police hinted at an imminent breakthrough.
02:40Police questioned a man seen parking outside Kiara's apartment.
02:45But then, without warning, everything stopped.
02:49And now, seven years later, police seem no closer to bringing Kiara's family answers.
02:58So Kiara, if you're watching this, we're not going to stop.
03:02I'm trying to do everything in my power to help bring you home.
03:05So who was with Kiara the night she vanished?
03:09Whatever happened with the man they questioned?
03:11And how did this case that seemed to move so quickly grow cold overnight?
03:23I heard about this case right after I retired.
03:28Everybody wanted to know what happened to Kiara Coles.
03:33But since the case went cold, Chicago PD have been tight-lipped.
03:38They had a person of interest, but have never named him.
03:44I've met Karen Phillips, Kiara Coles' mother, quite a few times.
03:49I've sat with her.
03:51I've talked with her.
03:52I've cried with her.
03:54She's now asked me to look into Kiara's disappearance.
03:59I want to see if I can get this case moving again.
04:06It's really good to see you, as always.
04:08Yeah.
04:08I know you've told me some things about Kiara's disappearance, but what we're going to do right
04:16now is I'm going to take you back to the beginning.
04:19Okay.
04:24Let's talk about the day Kiara first disappeared.
04:27When did you notice something was wrong?
04:30It was October the 3rd.
04:32It was a Wednesday, probably about 8 o'clock in the morning.
04:38Normally, I call my kids every day, even if it's just, what you doing, though?
04:42You up yet?
04:43So I called Kiara.
04:45Phone went to voicemail.
04:47I'm like, okay, she's probably asleep or just ain't charged her phone.
04:51So I went back to work.
04:53Still continue to call her, continue to call her.
04:55I had one of my daughters call her job to see if she had came to work today.
04:59And they said, no, she was off.
05:02Did you inquire, was this going to be just the one day off?
05:06Was she going to be off two days?
05:07No, I didn't ask any questions.
05:09I wasn't worried yet.
05:10Okay.
05:13So Kiara had a boyfriend.
05:15Tell me about him.
05:17Josh.
05:19Then when Kiara was dating around about six years.
05:23You know, some girls, like a bad boy, she didn't want that.
05:26She wanted somebody, like, stable, working, you know, that had something going for theyself.
05:32He was respectful, but he was real, like, quiet.
05:36He went to church on Sundays, so he was okay with me.
05:42I remember she told me, we finna start planning for a baby.
05:46I'm like, for real?
05:47She was like, yeah, Josh, say he ready.
05:51At this time, Kiara was pregnant?
05:54Yes.
05:55How far along was she?
05:58Right at three months.
05:59I was so happy for her.
06:01Yeah, she was really excited.
06:03Shared the ultrasound pictures all over social media.
06:07And Kiara seemed happy?
06:09Yeah.
06:10Yeah, she seemed happy.
06:14So, October 3rd, you don't hear from your daughter that night.
06:19What did you do next?
06:21Once I went home and went to bed and woke up, she hadn't called.
06:26I knew something just wasn't right.
06:29Next day, I said, I'm just gonna go over here and see, because the phone was still going to voicemail.
06:34So, I went to her apartment, but I didn't see her car.
06:39So, I went back to work, still continue to call her phone, still going to voicemails.
06:45So, once I got off that night, I called my, um, one of my daughters.
06:49I said, do you got Josh a number?
06:50Do you, um, you know, see if he know what Kiara, if he talk to Kiara.
06:55Since I ain't talked to her in a couple of days.
06:57At that point, I knew it was real.
07:00Something just wasn't right.
07:04So, that night, I had called the police for them to come and do a Wells Vian check.
07:10The police come.
07:12What did they find when they opened Kiara's apartment door?
07:17They didn't find anything.
07:19Everything was completely normal.
07:22It's just, like, when she walked out the door, she vanished.
07:30After they searched Kiara's apartment, Chicago police began a joint operation with an investigative
07:37team from Kiara's employer, the U.S. Postal Service.
07:44Did they give you any information on what their steps were going to be?
07:49No, they just said that they was going to interview everybody, go over to surveillance, phone records,
07:55and all that to try to find out what happened to my daughter.
07:59What were you thinking at that moment?
08:02I was a nervous wreck.
08:04I couldn't sleep.
08:05I couldn't eat.
08:06I cried so much.
08:07My head was constantly hurting.
08:09You know, it was just, it was, it was unbearable.
08:20Police combed through phone records and surveillance footage, searching for any break in the case,
08:27interviewing family, friends, and witnesses.
08:31And finally, five months later, on March 11th, the news exploded as police revealed a break in the case.
08:40They had a person of interest.
08:42Tonight, authorities suspect foul play.
08:44They believe someone may have hurt her.
08:46The search is intensifying for Kiara Coles.
08:50In March of 2019, did they give you additional information about the persons of interest?
08:58They just said they was going to question them.
09:01They couldn't give any names.
09:02Okay.
09:04So, who did you believe that they were speaking of when they said that we have some persons of interest?
09:12I believe it was Josh.
09:16Why do you say that?
09:17He has never been charged with any crime.
09:21Josh, in the beginning, said that he would do all that he could,
09:25passing our flyers, helping us do searches.
09:28Within a few weeks, he was gone to Louisiana.
09:33How do you feel about that?
09:35Very, very angry.
09:38You get to move on with your life, and here, my daughter's missing, and you didn't help look for her.
09:45What did the police tell you that their next step would be?
09:49The detective said he wasn't a person of interest.
09:52Did you ask them, why are you telling me that he's not a person of interest?
09:55They said that they didn't have no evidence on him or a probable cause.
10:01When is the last time you heard from the police department with an update on anything that's happening?
10:10The only time I hear from Chicago police is when somebody new take the case, they'll call and just be
10:15like,
10:16I'm the new lead detective on your daughter Kay's, and no, we don't have anything right now.
10:21We're just, you know, the same old, same old.
10:23It's got to be incredibly heavy.
10:27I'll just be trying to stay strong, but I'm angry because I feel like the people that's supposed to serve
10:33and protect us
10:34is not protecting my daughter or serving me to help me find out what happened to my daughter.
10:43I don't really have an answer for cases like this.
10:48The Chicago police department to have had no contact in years is really not doing nearly enough, in my opinion.
10:58In cases like this, typically, you know, a detective would look at the boyfriend first.
11:02And we know that CPD did that.
11:05But with this many years that has passed, and there's been nothing from the police department,
11:12that kind of tells me that there's something more to this than just a boyfriend.
11:19You have to wonder if there was somebody else in Kiara's life.
11:23And that's what I intend to find out.
11:34In 2022, four years after Kiara Coles vanished, Chicago PD released an eight-minute video about her case,
11:45revealing details they had never made public before.
11:49Detectives were able to piece together a timeline of the last few hours before Kiara disappeared on October 2nd.
11:55According to that video, on the day she disappeared, Kiara entered her home in Chatham on the south side of
12:04Chicago.
12:05A few hours later, Kiara left her apartment with an unknown male, identified as a person of interest.
12:15Kiara is seen making an ATM withdrawal.
12:17Police said her car was seen in an undisclosed part of the city where the man exited the vehicle.
12:25But there's no sign of Kiara.
12:30The next day, the man returns to Kiara's neighborhood, alone in her car.
12:36He enters her apartment and leaves with unknown items.
12:41To this day, police have yet to release an image of the man or reveal his identity.
12:48According to what Josh told Kiara's mother, he hadn't seen Kiara in days.
12:55So who the hell is he?
13:00I'm going to meet with Kiara's friend, Latavia, and hopefully she can give me some information on what was going
13:08on in Kiara's life and who this man might be.
13:14So tell me about your friendship with Kiara.
13:19Me and Kiara, we met in high school our freshman year.
13:24She was being her silly self.
13:27Loud, funny, obnoxious.
13:30And she had a laugh on her, but that laugh I can hear in my head right now.
13:35When was the last time that you actually spoke with Kiara?
13:41The night she went missing on FaceTime, she just was leaving her doctor's appointment.
13:47She just heard her first ultrasound.
13:50Just heard her baby's first heartbeat.
13:52She was excited, so she called me.
13:55And she asked me what I was doing when I get off work and was I eligible to come and
14:01kick it with her.
14:01I told her, yeah, I'll call her when I get off.
14:04But that never happened because I was tired.
14:07And she didn't call me.
14:08I didn't hear from her.
14:10That night.
14:14The next day, I get a call from Jasmine, one of her co-workers.
14:19So she was like, um, Tay, Kiara's mom just left the job.
14:24They looking for her.
14:25She's missing.
14:25I said, nah.
14:27And she was just like, yeah, Kiara's missing.
14:32So me and a couple of friends went to Kiara's place.
14:35We were just looking around.
14:36What did you see that night?
14:39It was an older lady that lived next door to Kiara.
14:41And she said that day, some guy was ringing her doorbell trying to get to Kiara's apartment.
14:49And she was like, I can't just let you in the apartment.
14:52If they not answering, they not answering.
14:54So then she said, um, he came around the back door.
15:00Babbin' on Kiara's back door.
15:01Mm-hmm.
15:03But she said she didn't see the guy.
15:04She didn't look out the window.
15:06She just told him that she, you know, can't let him in the building.
15:10But the lady said, yeah, he must have got inside because she ain't here no knocking no more.
15:15What night this lady is talking about?
15:19The night that she went missing.
15:22So this guy knocking on the door that night is potentially the last person to see Kiara.
15:30Yes.
15:31But because the neighbor lady didn't look out to see who it was, nobody knows who this guy could have
15:39been.
15:39No.
15:42What about Josh?
15:43What kind of guy was he?
15:45I don't really know too much about what type of person Josh was.
15:49I've only seen Josh, like, probably three times out of those six years.
15:52Him and Kiara was together.
15:55That's not a lot of time.
15:56Mm-hmm.
15:58She never talked to me about him as a person or what type of person he was.
16:02So I really can't tell y'all too much about Josh.
16:05Okay.
16:06Yeah.
16:07Except for she loved him.
16:08She loved him, um, yes.
16:10She loved him a lot.
16:12Did he love her back?
16:15I want to say he did.
16:18But, you know, you never know.
16:22Did you know about any other guys that could have been a part of Kiara's life?
16:30Well, when this happened, I'm not aware of the guy.
16:34But they said that she, him and her actually went on a date.
16:38Like, who was they?
16:40The detectives.
16:41Okay.
16:42So when you talked to the detectives, they said what?
16:45That she went on a date with someone.
16:47I'm not sure who that someone is.
16:49A second fella.
16:51Yeah.
16:51Okay.
16:52And they used the word date?
16:53Yeah.
16:54Did they tell you this guy's name?
16:56No.
16:58Do you have any idea who this guy could have been?
17:02No, I do not.
17:03She had never mentioned anyone?
17:05No.
17:06Did they show you anybody?
17:07Yes.
17:08Um, I seen the video of Kiara walking out her house with a guy.
17:12Did you get a good look at the...
17:14I mean, I didn't get a good look.
17:16I couldn't see his face.
17:17Like, but I'm like, I don't know that person.
17:20But you are 100% positive that that guy was not...
17:24It was not Josh.
17:25No.
17:29We know that Kiara had been dating Josh for six years.
17:34But Latavia was told by detectives that she was potentially dating someone else,
17:40and nobody knows who that other person was.
17:43According to Latavia, that guy that walks out of her house with her on the night that she goes missing,
17:50apparently was not Josh.
17:52So far, I haven't seen any police reports, and I have no idea who Latavia is talking about.
18:00I need to find out who that guy is, because this could be the guy that goes by her house,
18:07banging on the door the night she goes missing.
18:10It could be this other guy that she was supposed to be dating.
18:21In a cold case, the case file is everything.
18:26Without it, you're flying blind.
18:29Years pass, memories fade, but the file remembers.
18:34For years, Chicago PD kept a tight lid on Kiara's case,
18:40sharing just a few clips and a hint to a person of interest.
18:45But today, that changes.
18:48Through a series of persistent requests,
18:51we were finally able to gain access to CPD's redacted reports
18:56and surveillance video,
18:59video which, to my knowledge, the public has never seen.
19:05Take a look at this video.
19:07This is the one from Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018.
19:11That's the last day Kiara Coles was seen.
19:15This video here is Kiara walking into her apartment.
19:20According to her mom, she's coming home from the WIC store.
19:26What the hell's a WIC store?
19:27It's women and children.
19:28Oh, women's infant care?
19:29Yeah.
19:30Mm-hmm.
19:31Okay, so from this point, we haven't seen this footage.
19:35This now is at 848.
19:38We see a guy walking down the street.
19:41Can you tell if it's a male?
19:42It looks like a male.
19:43And he makes a left turn walking towards the front door
19:50of Kiara's apartment building.
19:52Yeah.
19:53Don't know who this person is.
19:54I just can't tell who it is.
19:55It could be anybody.
19:57And then there's the same guy,
20:01looks the same clothing from this distance,
20:03and there's a female walking with him,
20:06quite possibly Kiara.
20:09Well, they're leaving now.
20:11From the looks of things,
20:13they're getting into Kiara's car.
20:16Kiara's in the driver's seat,
20:18and then Kiara's car pulls off
20:20and drives down the street.
20:23And they're off.
20:26Then they arrive at an unknown location
20:29at 11.14 p.m.
20:31One person walks down the street
20:33away from the vehicle,
20:35but the driver never exits this vehicle.
20:39We no longer see Kiara,
20:41and we still can't get a look at this guy.
20:45And now, this is the next day,
20:48October 3rd at 12.37.
20:52Kiara's car is back at her apartment building.
20:55So at 12.40,
20:57there's a man with dreadlocks.
20:59Yeah, dreadlocks, right?
21:02Walking towards Kiara's apartment building.
21:05Mm-hmm.
21:07And now he's returning.
21:09Mm-hmm.
21:10He's carrying the bag,
21:12and he walks back down the street.
21:15Mm-hmm.
21:16So do we see him go in the apartment?
21:18No, we're not inside.
21:19Right.
21:19But we can say that...
21:21He goes into the building.
21:22...you can assume...
21:23Right.
21:24Walk back and up to the last video,
21:26and it starts.
21:27I'm going to stop it right here.
21:31I don't know.
21:32But in my opinion,
21:34that's the same guy
21:35that is walking to Kiara's apartment
21:38the night before.
21:41Now, this is a long sleeve,
21:42so he could have on the same T-shirt under there.
21:45I mean, we don't know.
21:46Right.
21:47What about the dreadlocks, though?
21:49Well, he has on a hoodie.
21:51You can't see him.
21:52You can't see Andrew coming out the front?
21:54That is the same guy,
21:56and I would put money on it.
21:58This is very clear.
22:00I truly believe that this guy,
22:02walking down the street
22:04with his long-ass dreadlocks,
22:06he can be positively identified.
22:09We can definitely find out who he is.
22:12Now, in these reports,
22:14we've gotten additional information,
22:17things that, you know,
22:18we never knew before.
22:19There was someone that she was texting.
22:24A text message between Coles
22:27and an unknown person
22:28began on 1 October, 2018.
22:31Between 8 and almost midnight,
22:3423, 23 hours,
22:36Coles messages back to this guy
22:37who replied,
22:39cool, cool, well,
22:40I hope you enjoyed our little mini date.
22:4358 messages were exchanged
22:44between Kiara and this unknown.
22:46That's a lot of goddamn texting,
22:48and you gotta like something
22:49about the person
22:50if you're texting that much.
22:52Right.
22:53Now, according to the CPD report,
22:56the police gets in contact
22:57with this unknown person.
23:00Mm-hmm.
23:00It states in here
23:01that she did tell him
23:02that she was pregnant.
23:03He did not know
23:04that she was missing
23:05until about four days
23:07after it was on the news.
23:09Mm-hmm.
23:09I don't know 100%
23:11that this is the guy
23:13that Latavia was speaking of,
23:15but I do know
23:16this can't be her boyfriend, Josh,
23:19that she's texting.
23:21And this would have been
23:21the day before she came
23:22over, say?
23:23Yes.
23:26We finally got in a look
23:28at the man seen with Kiara
23:30on the night she disappeared.
23:32It's unclear
23:33if this is the same video
23:35that police showed Latavia.
23:37And between the grainy video
23:39and redacted reports,
23:40it's impossible to know
23:42who this guy is.
23:44What I did confirm
23:45is that Kiara
23:47may have been involved
23:48with someone
23:49other than Josh.
23:51I'm going to meet with Jasmine,
23:53another of Kiara's friends,
23:55to see if she can put a finger
23:57on who this guy is
23:59in the video
23:59and tell me
24:01who else was involved
24:02in Kiara's life.
24:05So, Jasmine,
24:06thank you for coming
24:07to talk with us.
24:09Absolutely.
24:09Maybe you can tell me
24:10about your friendship
24:11with Kiara.
24:13I met Kiara
24:14when she was about 14.
24:16I was 15.
24:18We was inseparable
24:19ever since.
24:20I literally tried
24:21to move in
24:21with her family.
24:22Like, they couldn't
24:23get rid of me.
24:24Now, how did she meet Josh?
24:26We met at a nightclub.
24:28We partied.
24:29We partied.
24:30This young girl.
24:31You were with her
24:31the night that she met him?
24:33Yeah.
24:34How would you describe
24:37the relationship
24:38between Kiara and Josh?
24:41I would say a rollercoaster
24:42toxic.
24:43I've always found
24:45Josh to be controlling.
24:47Very.
24:48He masked it as caring.
24:50She would call me crying
24:52or come to my house crying
24:54about cheating allegations.
24:56She told me she, like,
24:58would pop up on him
24:59at his job.
25:01Girls would be there
25:02waiting on Josh
25:02to get out.
25:03She would confront them
25:04and they would be like,
25:05yeah, I date him too.
25:08She was so happy
25:09about having a baby.
25:10She always wanted
25:11to be a mother.
25:12She's a nurturer.
25:13And I said,
25:14what did Josh say?
25:15And that's what she was like.
25:16Oh, he was kind of happy.
25:17Well, he wasn't that happy
25:19at first,
25:19but he's kind of happy now.
25:21And just left it at that.
25:22Did she say, kind of happy?
25:23Yeah.
25:24She was blind about love.
25:25It was nothing that
25:26none of us could have told her.
25:30Did you ever hear anything
25:32about her having some interest
25:34in another guy?
25:36No.
25:37She was so happy
25:38about having a baby.
25:39That's all I knew.
25:42This is a report
25:43that we got
25:44from the Chicago Police Department.
25:46And Joe's going to explain.
25:48On the 1st of October,
25:51she had exchanged messages
25:53with some guy
25:54who we don't know who he is.
25:55One of which was, you know,
25:56him saying thanks
25:57for the little mini-date
25:58we had last night.
25:59Do you know this guy?
26:02It could have been somebody
26:03that we know, though,
26:04like from childhood.
26:05What's a mini-date?
26:06They might have just went out
26:07for, like, to eat or something.
26:10Like, we do that a lot,
26:11like, go to dinner dates,
26:12stuff like that.
26:13So tell her about the video
26:15while I set up.
26:18We were able to access a video
26:20that has a person on there
26:21that I'd like you to look at
26:23and see if you can recognize
26:24that person.
26:26You're going to see
26:27a fellow walk,
26:28and if you can identify
26:30this person for us,
26:31and you will see him now.
26:43That's Josh.
26:44That's Josh.
26:47His build,
26:48his dreads,
26:50the length of his dreads,
26:51the skin tone,
26:53the way he wears his hat,
26:54he wears his hat to the back.
26:57That's him.
27:02Jasmine gave it to us straight.
27:04She believes the man
27:05in the video
27:06who police in 2022
27:08called the person of interest
27:11is Josh.
27:13So what the hell
27:14was he doing there?
27:15Not only on the night
27:16she disappeared,
27:17but on the next day.
27:19Now, the question isn't just
27:21where did Kiara go.
27:23It's also,
27:24what does Josh know
27:26about Kiara's disappearance?
27:35Based on Jasmine's account
27:37of who she believes
27:39was in the video,
27:40we now have
27:41the clearest picture yet
27:42of CPD's possible person
27:45of interest
27:46in Kiara's case.
27:48Her boyfriend at the time,
27:51Josh.
27:52But being on video
27:54doesn't mean
27:55he committed a crime.
27:56Being a so-called
27:58bad boyfriend
27:59isn't a crime.
28:01Leaving town
28:02after your pregnant girlfriend
28:04disappears
28:04isn't a crime.
28:07Now,
28:08Josh is married
28:09and settled
28:10in the suburbs
28:11of Louisiana.
28:13Through public records,
28:15Joe and I
28:16have been able
28:16to track down
28:17where he's living.
28:20This is either
28:20going to go
28:21really, really good
28:22or really, really bad.
28:23Or it won't go at all.
28:25Well, yeah,
28:26that would be
28:26the really, really bad part.
28:28But I think
28:29that we're going
28:30to just talk to him
28:31like we talk
28:32to anybody else.
28:33Oh, yeah.
28:34I think as long
28:35as we don't,
28:35he don't think
28:36we're, like,
28:36investigating this,
28:38he'd be more willing
28:39to talk to us.
28:47I think we're
28:48only going to get
28:49one shot
28:50at this.
28:59I don't see
29:00any movement
29:00inside.
29:06Hi, how are you?
29:07All right.
29:08Can we go?
29:09Is, uh,
29:10Josh here?
29:10No.
29:11Um, do you,
29:12can we come back
29:13and talk to him
29:14or does he live here?
29:15We're doing a documentary,
29:18um, on missing persons
29:19cases from Chicago.
29:22No, we're good.
29:24Have a blessed day.
29:24You don't have to come back.
29:29Well, I guess
29:29they don't want
29:30to talk to us.
29:32Once I told them
29:33that we're doing
29:34a documentary
29:35on missing persons cases,
29:37she was like,
29:37oh, no, no, no.
29:38He's not interested.
29:39He's not here.
29:40You don't have to come back.
29:41I mean, all I know is
29:42if my girlfriend
29:44was pregnant
29:45and she turned up missing,
29:47I'd want to know
29:48what happened.
29:48You know, I think anybody
29:49would want to know
29:50what happened.
29:51I agree.
29:52So I don't understand
29:53why they won't talk to us.
29:55There's nothing else
29:56we can do here.
29:58Why don't we go see
29:59if we can reach him
30:00on the phone?
30:01All right.
30:06I'm going to try this number
30:08for Josh's wife.
30:10Try it.
30:11May as well, huh?
30:12All she's going to do
30:12is hang up on you.
30:16Hello?
30:17Hi, is this ?
30:19Yes, this is .
30:20My name is Pam Childs
30:22and I'm doing a documentary
30:24on missing persons cases
30:25in Chicago.
30:26One of the cases
30:27that we're doing
30:28is Kiera Coles.
30:29Are you familiar?
30:33Are you, um,
30:35you're not familiar
30:36with Kiera Coles at all?
30:41Hello?
30:42Yes.
30:43This is
30:44I'll now help you.
30:45I don't mean any harm,
30:47no disrespect whatsoever.
30:49Kiera Coles' missing persons case
30:51just happens to be
30:52one of the cases
30:53that we're working on.
30:54Just wanted to get
30:55an opportunity to talk,
30:57just to get some insight,
30:58anything.
31:00My name is Pam Childs.
31:01Ms. Pam,
31:02do you know
31:02they both have lawyers?
31:04So you might as well
31:05stop calling here,
31:07stop coming here
31:08until you talk
31:08to their lawyer
31:09and their lawyer
31:10will tell you
31:11exactly what you need to do.
31:12We appreciate it
31:13if you wouldn't come back.
31:14Okay, ma'am.
31:16You have a great day.
31:22It's so disheartening
31:24to try to
31:25just get to the truth,
31:27to give a family
31:29some solace.
31:31I'm not accusing anybody
31:32of doing anything.
31:34I'm not here
31:35as a police officer,
31:38but I have got nothing
31:40but the door
31:42slammed in my face.
31:43And if I want
31:45to speak with them,
31:46I have to go
31:47through their attorneys.
31:50Joshua,
31:51I come in peace.
31:53I rang your doorbell
31:54in hopes of some answers
31:56as to what happened
31:58to Kiera Coles.
31:59Something to go on.
32:01Something to take back
32:02to Kiera's mother.
32:04What's so hard
32:04about sitting down
32:05telling me
32:06I have nothing to do
32:08with Kiera Coles
32:09being a missing person?
32:11What's so hard
32:12about doing that?
32:14For me,
32:15this case isn't cold.
32:16I know there are answers
32:18out there.
32:19But what's it going to take
32:21for me to get those answers
32:23and move Kiera's case forward?
32:35Our investigation
32:37has revealed
32:38that the man
32:39police once labeled
32:41a person of interest
32:42in Kiera Coles' disappearance
32:44was likely
32:46her boyfriend Josh.
32:48He's never been charged,
32:50and officially
32:51he isn't even
32:54a person of interest.
32:56But I believe
32:57he is the key
32:58to knowing
33:00what happened
33:00to Kiera.
33:02But Josh won't talk.
33:06The question for me
33:07is why.
33:12This guy, Jordan,
33:15he has some reports
33:16that we've never seen before.
33:20Today,
33:21Joe and I are going
33:22to meet
33:22with a private investigator
33:24that worked
33:25with Kiera's family.
33:27He may have some insight
33:28as to why Josh
33:30won't talk.
33:31I just had a brief
33:33conversation with him
33:34over the phone,
33:35and he's willing to share,
33:37which is great
33:38and rare,
33:39so I accept.
33:42I'm anxious to see
33:44the reports that you have
33:45that possibly we don't.
33:47So this is one
33:48of the things
33:49that we have.
33:50There was a 2014
33:51domestic violence report.
33:53In these reports,
33:55Kiera Coles
33:55was the offender.
33:57They're heavily redacted,
33:58but this incident
33:59was at the home
34:00where Josh was living.
34:02There were several
34:03complainants, actually,
34:03three complainants,
34:05one male,
34:06the other one being
34:07his aunt,
34:08who he lived with,
34:09and another woman.
34:11So if you want
34:12to take a look at this...
34:13Sure.
34:14Kiera's referred to
34:15his ex-girlfriend here.
34:18Met with a complainant
34:19who related that
34:21offender,
34:22ex-girlfriend of her nephew,
34:24and in her residence
34:25without permission.
34:27After repeated requests
34:28to stay out
34:28of her residence,
34:30offender,
34:30she was determined
34:31to find victim complainant,
34:33I'm assuming that
34:34that's Josh,
34:34who resides there
34:35and claims she wanted
34:37to surprise him.
34:39He comes out
34:40of the bedroom
34:40and asks Kiera
34:41to leave immediately.
34:44However,
34:44she did not
34:45into the bedroom
34:46to find him
34:47in the company
34:48of current girlfriend,
34:50at which time
34:51Kiera began
34:52to strike her
34:53about the face
34:53and body
34:54with closed fists
34:54and by kicking her.
34:56Wow.
34:58Upon our canvassing,
35:00Josh's neighborhood
35:00seemed to indicate
35:01that they were familiar
35:02with the steady girlfriend,
35:04if you will.
35:05She was either living there
35:06or at least occasionally
35:07staying there.
35:09All signs seem to point
35:10to the fact
35:11that the other woman
35:12was the main relationship
35:13with Josh.
35:14And Miss Coles
35:15was actually more or less
35:16regarded or relegated
35:17to as the side girlfriend.
35:19Is this the same woman
35:20that Josh is married to now?
35:22Yes.
35:23But this incident
35:24is from back in 2014?
35:26Yep.
35:27Four years
35:28before Kiera's disappearance.
35:30Yeah.
35:31It does show a history.
35:32So it shows us
35:33a history of being treated
35:35as kind of a side girlfriend.
35:38Even back then?
35:39Yeah.
35:40And this is changing
35:41the whole dynamic
35:42of information
35:44that we've gathered
35:45because we were
35:47under the impression
35:48that Kiera
35:49is with this guy.
35:51But the side girl
35:52is not pregnant.
35:53Now what?
36:00According to Jordan,
36:01Josh wasn't just a cheater
36:03as Jasmine mentioned.
36:05He had a whole other life
36:08as a family man
36:09for years.
36:11It kind of makes you wonder,
36:13is this why Josh
36:14won't talk to us?
36:16For seven years,
36:18Kiera's loved ones
36:20have waited for answers.
36:22When I started digging
36:24into her case,
36:25one question drove me.
36:27Why did it suddenly go cold?
36:31Although I'm a former
36:32CPD detective,
36:34no one that worked
36:35Kiera's case
36:36was willing to discuss
36:38it with me
36:39except for one man,
36:41the lieutenant
36:42who oversaw the case
36:43in 2022.
36:46I've gathered enough information
36:48for us to compare notes,
36:50see if we're on the same track.
36:53I'm excited
36:54about talking to Will.
36:56I haven't seen him
36:57in a long time.
36:58He's always been a great guy.
36:59I know he's smart.
37:00He retired as a commander,
37:02so...
37:03I would like to know
37:04if they've ever
37:05had an interview
37:07with Josh
37:08and how far
37:10they got with this guy.
37:15So, Will,
37:16you know,
37:16we've been investigating
37:18the Kiera Coles
37:19missing persons case.
37:21We interviewed
37:21one of her closest friends.
37:23Her name's Jasmine.
37:25Jasmine.
37:25And she grew up
37:27with Kiera
37:28from, like, age 14.
37:30She knew
37:31the boyfriend, Josh.
37:34Jasmine
37:35identified him right away.
37:371,000%.
37:39Yes.
37:39That's Josh.
37:41Same thing.
37:42Josh's best friend
37:43immediately looked
37:44at the video
37:44and said,
37:44yep,
37:45that's who that is.
37:47There's no ambiguity there.
37:48That we know
37:50with a pretty good degree
37:51of certainty
37:52that that person
37:53of interest
37:53walking down the street
37:54is who we think it is.
37:56Okay, so you know
37:57that there were
37:58direct interviews
37:58by CPD
37:59with Josh?
38:00No.
38:01He's never been,
38:02as far as I know,
38:03even accused
38:04of any crimes
38:05involving Kiera
38:06or anything else.
38:07As a matter of fact,
38:07the only criminal case
38:09we have involving
38:10Josh,
38:11Kiera Coles
38:12is the offender.
38:12And that's for the domestic?
38:14That's for the domestic.
38:15But in these interviews,
38:16he says he only spoke
38:17to her on the phone.
38:18Then he said,
38:18you know,
38:19I didn't see her that day.
38:20We know he saw her.
38:21Because he's on video.
38:22Right.
38:23Well, when we start
38:24going through videos
38:25and see that that's
38:26not necessarily the case,
38:28start to ask questions again
38:30in subsequent interviews,
38:32that's when he's like,
38:33he's done cooperating,
38:34he's done talking to us,
38:35and then he's in Louisiana.
38:37With so much circumstantial evidence
38:39on the table,
38:40why weren't there any warrants?
38:42So they tried to get a warrant
38:44for his phone,
38:44but because of the time
38:46that passed,
38:47Kim Ward,
38:47the supervisor of felony review
38:49at the time,
38:50wouldn't give it.
38:51I think that was a mistake.
38:53I think the phone records
38:55should have been given.
38:57And they tried to get a warrant
38:58for his place,
38:59but same thing,
39:00not fresh.
39:01He had already relocated.
39:03What goes through my head
39:05in this case is,
39:06who benefits from
39:08Kiera Coles disappearing?
39:10But, I mean,
39:11all we really have in this
39:12is a bunch of interviews
39:14and a bunch of video surveillance.
39:16Right.
39:17None of it shows a crime.
39:18Right.
39:19We still have not determined
39:20a crime was committed.
39:21What's the big thing
39:22we don't have?
39:23Body.
39:24Body.
39:24Right.
39:25And the final line of this
39:27says,
39:27at this time,
39:28the investigation did not
39:29yield sufficient evidence
39:30for charges,
39:30and it remains open.
39:36At the start
39:37of this investigation,
39:38I set out to jumpstart
39:40Kiera's case again
39:42and get her family
39:43some answers.
39:45Now,
39:46I'm hoping
39:47that by finally pulling
39:48back the curtain
39:49on who was with Kiera
39:51that night,
39:52it might make Josh
39:53feel compelled
39:54to come forward
39:56and share
39:56his side of the story.
39:58But this story
40:00isn't about Josh.
40:01It's about Kiera.
40:04Her family
40:05deserves justice.
40:07And I'll keep fighting
40:09to make sure
40:10her case
40:11is never forgotten.
