00:00I think Bobsleigh is pretty comparable to Formula 1.
00:15You have your high-budget teams.
00:17And that makes it Germany 1-2.
00:19You have your low-budget teams.
00:20I mean what?
00:22Teammates battling against each other within teams.
00:24It's exciting, it's fast.
00:27Nice looking run from Taylor Austin.
00:29The margin for errors are really small.
00:31This is trouble.
00:32Oh, that's over.
00:33I'm trying to go as fast as possible.
00:35I definitely ride that line of cash or crash.
00:38I love you.
00:39Bobsleigh combines massive athleticism with mind precision and a healthy dose of fear.
00:49It's the best sport in the world.
00:56But it's crazy expensive.
00:58Our tour keeps travelling further and further.
01:01Each athlete has about 500 kilos worth of sleds with them.
01:04Plus runners and tools and equipment.
01:06And you've got to ship that around the world.
01:09The athletes are paying for us to come on tour with them and coach them.
01:13They're all paying $45,000 this year.
01:16The season's basically bankrupt me.
01:18That's a lot of burden to put on somebody.
01:21It's not ideal.
01:22We're real short right now.
01:25The biggest problem is support from the government is a lot smaller than in the past.
01:30But people don't believe in the program right now.
01:33And the athletes, they're giving it their best.
01:36But we don't have everything that we need to win medals.
01:42I've never seen a sport go from so well-funded, so well-coached to what we are now.
01:48The reason why it's so sweet to win is because it's so hard.
01:55But we can't trust people who are not always in that country.
01:56We're here, don't hurt anyone.
01:57We're here, don't hurt anyone.
01:58We're here."
01:59O, O, O, O, O!
02:00What are they doing?
02:01I'm fine.
02:02It's very consistent, but I'm fine.
02:03I'm fine.
02:04It's amazing.
02:05It's free to do so.
02:06It's easy.
02:07It's a surprise here.
02:08We're here.
02:09I'm fine.
02:10We're here.
02:11You're here.
02:12Come on.
02:13Come on...
02:14We're here.
02:15We're here.
02:16You're here.
02:17We're here.
02:18All right.
02:19You're here.
02:20You're here.
02:21Ok.
02:22I wish we had more resources, money, like technical support, we need spare parts, you
02:32know, we're running out from everything.
02:34My budget should be 20, 25 grand in this season.
02:37Right now, five maybe.
02:41I need this one.
02:43And like half is gone.
02:45It's beginning in season, half is gone.
02:51I'm fixing right now, my way.
02:55MacGyver style.
02:58Oh man, a little more back.
03:05Equipment is a big thing in bobsleigh.
03:06If you line up to every race with an advantage over somebody else, you're going to win more
03:10races than they do.
03:11Let's check the junkyard.
03:13Not this one, someone took the part, maybe this one.
03:18It's similar, but it's not the same, no luck.
03:23Some people are building their sleds in their garage and others are building it at BMW's
03:27factory in Germany.
03:29Oh, there's a good spot.
03:33We got Marty, so, you know.
03:36Yep.
03:37I think it's bad.
03:40Don't try this at home.
03:42Only professionals, yeah, you know.
03:44Man, it's almost.
03:46I need this point up, like 10 mil minimum.
03:50It's all sleds, you know, but it's still usable.
03:57Marker.
03:58Is that loud enough?
03:59Perfect.
04:00That's good.
04:01Okay.
04:02That's very much.
04:03Taylor Austin, bobsleigh pilot.
04:05When I was younger, I always wanted to have a career in football, so I ended up moving
04:12to Calgary and playing with the junior football team, the Calgary Colts.
04:17My dream was always playing in the NFL, playing in the CFL, playing as long as possible.
04:22There was definitely a point in my career when I realized it's not going to go too much
04:27further.
04:28Talking with my running back coach, he had actually tried bobsleigh back in the day.
04:32Taylor Austin of Calgary was a U-sports football player with the Calgary Dinos before
04:37being recruited to bobsleigh.
04:43Go, go, go!
04:44Since then, I've had a relentless push to be better every day.
04:48Closing it again, though.
04:49He's got to be clean in the bottom of the pack.
04:51Oh!
04:52He will be guaranteed a medal.
04:53He's a world-class bobsleigh driver.
04:55There's like 10 to 15 of those.
04:57Ten years on, I have a lot of experience and reputation as a resilient, fast pilot.
05:02See, yeah, like, you're not actually getting off the wall.
05:05Or do I, like, help it over more?
05:07We need this ice.
05:08I want to be, like, there, but, like, a sled, like, earlier.
05:11I've always, you know, looked up to the people who've been Canada One,
05:14Canada's best pilot, Rush, and then Crips.
05:20He was overshadowed and sort of forgotten about.
05:23He's older than I was when I retired.
05:26His window is now.
05:28Let's go!
05:29Come on, C.
05:30World Championships being in Lake Placid this year, he can win that race.
05:33He just has to have a fast enough start.
05:36So now I'm Canada One.
05:38The competition within the team gives them a target to be Canada One.
05:42That's their target.
05:43My target is trying to be the best in the world.
05:46Obviously, an Olympic medal is everything to a bobsleigh athlete.
05:50But, for me, it would be redemption.
05:54I think we can hold one-two before we go.
06:19All right, fellas.
06:20Work's been put in.
06:21We know where the jobs are.
06:22Let's try and execute the best we can, right?
06:23Let's put it out.
06:24Let's push ourselves today.
06:25Let's have some fun.
06:26Boom!
06:27This year, Taylor's got pretty much a whole new team.
06:41It's a bit of a tryout for those guys, right?
06:44We'll see how their first races go.
06:46We're trying to be good and fast, but make sure we hit those cues.
06:50I've been a track athlete doing 100 and 200-meter sprints.
06:53Bobsleigh has definitely given me a second chance.
06:55This is my second year.
06:57This time, I really have something to prove for myself.
07:00So what I did with Schmode at the time with the handles,
07:02I accidentally blocked him, and then when I realized it,
07:05I just went up and I reset.
07:07I'm coming in as a rookie, so I need to learn quick.
07:10Back!
07:11There's absolutely a chance I could end up not being on the team.
07:15All I know is I need to do my best.
07:17Go!
07:19Taylor is a big role model for everybody,
07:22and he's one of the best drivers in the world.
07:24Me coming in very new, it's a great honor to be on his team.
07:27Okay?
07:30There's definitely some weight going into this next Olympics.
07:33It's, you know, medal or bust for us.
07:46Cyrus' team came into this whole preseason as the underdogs.
07:49So these guys have something to prove, right?
07:54It's just a little visualization.
07:55This is important because then it gives me and my crew confidence
07:58that I can get down the track safely.
08:05Every time we do it, we'll picture in a perfect run.
08:09Good.
08:11Go!
08:14We've been training together for four months now.
08:17The hard work is paying off.
08:18Yup.
08:20We're gonna try.
08:22To beat Taylor.
08:23Taylor Austin from Canada and some of the athletes you know well.
08:28The funny thing is like three of us, me, Cyrus and Shaq,
08:33were his team pushing him on his first World Cup medal.
08:3630 hundreds back, so it's not gonna be gold, but he will be in the medal.
08:41It's a guaranteed medal for Taylor Austin of Canada.
08:46Yes, boys!
08:48Wow, that's an amazing result for this team.
08:51First ever World Cup medal for all four members of this team.
08:55That proved that that team could be something.
08:59I told you, Taylor, we're gonna get a medal and we got it.
09:02And we're gonna keep going.
09:04That was big time.
09:06We won a lot of medals.
09:08My time on that team was good, you know.
09:11We got to be World Cup medalists together.
09:14They put their faith in me to do what we needed to do,
09:17and I think we were successful.
09:21Our dynamic was a little tense,
09:24but when we have to perform, we perform because we're professionals.
09:29We finished eighth overall in the 22-23 season together.
09:32On your time with Shaq, Boca, and Cyrus, did you enjoy sliding with these guys?
09:38I'm not answering that question.
09:39I'm not answering that question.
09:46This past summer, Taylor decided to go in a different direction.
09:52He took on some new brakemen.
09:55Yeah, Taylor never really told me about the change.
09:59He just went and formed his team.
10:01What's your goal, Steve?
10:0243-02.
10:03That's insane.
10:04He's been doing very well the last few push sessions, Boca.
10:07Yeah!
10:08That's what I'm talking about!
10:11What did you say, man?
10:13What did you say?
10:15It's a good day for Boca, eh?
10:17Both Shaq and Boca are amongst the best pushers on the team.
10:21They've had a really good camp,
10:22and they're definitely the top pushers in the organization.
10:2543-93.
10:26That's fast.
10:28The pilot, so possibly, wants the best guys to push him.
10:31They used to fight for the best guys.
10:34Four pp's, man!
10:36Four pp's!
10:38But, right now, at the best team,
10:39we're gonna have to fight for the best guys.
10:40Four pp's!
10:42Four pp's!
10:44Four pp's!
10:46The pilot, so possibly, wants the best guys to push him.
10:50They used to fight for the best guys.
10:54Four pp's, man!
10:56Four pp's!
10:57Four pp's!
10:59But, right now, the best pilot is one of the best guys.
11:03It's hard to understand,
11:04and it's hard to not take personal.
11:07At this point, I have to take his decision very personal,
11:11and now I have to show him and the coaching staff my worth, right?
11:15This is not a nice-guy sport.
11:19It's a big risk.
11:23The boys don't really know how to load yet.
11:25Back!
11:27Good!
11:30They're good athletes.
11:31But, right now, they're just not ready.
11:34Oh, the guys forget closing zippers on the gears.
11:39Are you good?
11:40Yeah, I'm good.
11:41He's definitely on the back end with a year or two left in this sport, so why wouldn't you want to win? And win now?
11:56It was faster, but it was not as good.
12:00For me to have a new team this year is definitely risky.
12:04Oh, yeah, we're way out here.
12:05And that's the same spot we were yesterday.
12:07Yeah, but at least we're in the sled scenery.
12:09Yeah.
12:10I'm focused on me and the team I have presently.
12:13We are just taking a long time to complete the load.
12:15Like, we started loading here.
12:17If you make the wrong choice with teammates, you're not going to get the result that you want.
12:22You only have a very small window of opportunity to achieve big things in this sport.
12:27Just trust it more, execute.
12:29Every rep is just trying to be faster off the pump.
12:30You know?
12:31Apparently he doesn't want the fastest team yet, but it's his team, right?
12:46I think there's a big scratch in it, so that's fun.
12:49That one's a big one.
12:50Yeah, that one's big.
12:51Oh, no.
12:52Shane, man.
12:53Shane, this is your looking runner.
12:55All right.
12:56Let's take a look.
12:58No, man, it's nothing.
12:59Somebody would put it.
13:00Somebody would say it's nothing.
13:01It's nothing.
13:0250-50.
13:03It's okay.
13:04It's nothing.
13:05I'm honest.
13:06North American Cup, big deal.
13:07Yeah, North American Cup.
13:08It's fine.
13:09You win.
13:10World champs, you made shiny.
13:13See if we get a counter on him.
13:14Is he doing 20?
13:16I don't think he's doing 20.
13:17I'm doing 30, man.
13:1830.
13:19Check the taste.
13:20That's what we're supposed to do.
13:21As per the Bald Slave Voodoo.
13:22What is Bald Slave Voodoo?
13:25Oh, good question.
13:27It's everything, man.
13:28You know, someone back in the day did it.
13:30They transferred that knowledge onto someone else.
13:33We try and replicate things that the people that have been successful do.
13:38Hopefully it works for us.
13:40So, anyway.
13:42Make sure you just got Shane sitting on this chair doing nothing.
13:44This is his usual position.
13:47This is Shane's normal position.
13:48Man, I gotta, I gotta rest up.
13:50Shane had a twisted ankle there a couple days ago warming up for the two-man race.
13:55Have you seen Shane, his brakeman?
13:56He's here behind.
13:57He's a big guy, right?
13:58You know?
13:59Like, what's this guy gotta do to kind of like, to, in order to keep his safety?
14:03Oh, oh, oh.
14:04He's got a little.
14:05You all right?
14:07Yeah?
14:08Ouch.
14:10Let's see.
14:11Yeah?
14:12Hey.
14:13God damn it.
14:15You gonna do a bit or you need someone else to go in?
14:17Someone else.
14:18Someone else?
14:19Yeah, I was doing my final warm-up and I ran into this little ice mound and rolled my ankle.
14:24So, out for this race.
14:26We'll fire Mark up, eh?
14:27Yeah.
14:28Keep going.
14:29Keep going.
14:30Two minutes to start for the men.
14:31Two minutes to start.
14:32You always have a substitute kind of sitting there ready to go, but they usually don't go in,
14:36so they're not necessarily actually prepped and ready to go.
14:39Don't think.
14:40Just push.
14:41Track is clear for Taylor.
14:42I'll sit and shake over.
14:43Don't fire them!
14:44Come on!
14:45Come on, Mark!
14:46Back!
14:47Yeah!
14:48Come on, Mark!
14:49Come on, Mark!
14:50Come on, Mark!
14:51Come on, Mark!
14:52Come on, Mark!
14:53Come on, Mark!
14:54Come on, Mark!
14:55Come on, Mark!
14:56Come on, Mark!
14:57Come on, Mark!
14:58Come on, Mark!
14:59You know, football, rugby, you play through some injuries, but Shane came from track and
15:03field.
15:04Track's a bit more, everything has to be perfect kind of thing.
15:07So, for him, he needs everything to be feeling like really, really good for him to really
15:11execute stuff.
15:12Oh-ho-ho!
15:13Oh, yeah.
15:14There you go.
15:15Yeah, it's definitely gotten worse.
15:16Shane's injury could be a problem for him.
15:17We don't know if he's going to be good for the race, but we'll have to wait and see.
15:23That's good, eh?
15:24Ooh!
15:25Bob today's more of a rugged sport.
15:26Sometimes you just have to tape it up and get back in the race.
15:27How am I going to get my foot in my shoe?
15:28Yeah.
15:29Oh-ho-ho!
15:30All right.
15:31I'm going to go listen to some sad music and cry in the corner.
15:34All right, good afternoon and welcome to Whistler Sliding Center.
15:35Some action-packed racing coming up soon.
15:36Can't be too tight, too, right?
15:37Because we need the back and forth.
15:41She's coming higher than the runner.
15:42I think we're going to be good today.
15:43Yeah.
15:44Pull it.
15:45That sled that we're using right now is a very old sled that we use for push training.
15:46It's overused, right?
15:47It's overused, right?
15:48It's overused, right?
15:49And right here, we are taping the brake handles because it's the same way.
15:50It's overused, right?
15:51And right here, we're going to taping the brake handles.
15:53And then we're going to go ahead and go ahead and get back in the middle of the
15:56right now.
15:57Yeah.
15:58Okay.
15:59All right, good afternoon and welcome to Whistler Sliding Center.
16:00Some action-packed racing coming up soon.
16:01Can't be too tight, too, right?
16:02Because we need the back and forth.
16:03She's coming higher than the runner.
16:04I think we're going to be good today.
16:05Yeah.
16:06Pull it.
16:07That sled that we're using right now is a very old sled that we use for push training.
16:12But it's overused, right?
16:14And right here, we are taping the brake handles.
16:18Because there's a big metal piece right here that is cutting my ankle.
16:23So the Icehouse sled is just basically a practice sled that we push on all summer.
16:28We bring it out when we have to.
16:30And that's the sled they gave us this year.
16:32Because we ain't good enough for a good sled yet.
16:36The best pilots, you know, the experienced pilots, get the best sleds.
16:41And they have a machine.
16:42Oh, you're a sleazy.
16:43Lift it up.
16:44That's good.
16:45How was it?
16:46Nothing.
16:47Oh, man.
16:48It drives like a dream.
16:50So we're going to take the hood off.
16:52Because we don't want to show what it's designed.
16:54Yeah.
16:55We'll tell them to cut this part.
16:56Oh, yeah, man.
16:57We like keeping some secret right now.
16:58The other teams maybe have a better equipment or more money for the equipment.
17:03We'd rather not show it.
17:05It's like secret stuff.
17:07Yeah.
17:08We want to keep some secrets.
17:10It drives itself, man.
17:12Just touch it.
17:13It just goes.
17:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:15Downtown was good.
17:17Oh, man.
17:18Woo!
17:19Almost lost a finger.
17:22All right.
17:23Let's get it.
17:25Boom!
17:26Cyrus has recently switched from being a brakeman to being a pilot.
17:30He's got a lot of really good experience braking on his team.
17:36They have a really strong start.
17:38But Cyrus is still really new at driving.
17:43Go, go, go!
17:44Go, go, go!
18:00Crash, crash, crash, crash, crash, crash.
18:09Cyrus crashed a week and a half ago.
18:11Okay.
18:12Okay, I'll just get a brakeman.
18:13Button's big now, man.
18:14Are you good, buddy?
18:16It wasn't easy.
18:17It was a rough one.
18:19Got me a burn.
18:23Yeah, I think Cyrus's crash, it kind of shook him up a little bit.
18:28Sometimes it can shake your confidence.
18:32This track is the fastest in the world.
18:35So, yeah, happens, right?
18:38Nobody wants to crash and everybody wants to get down the fastest.
18:41It is a little bit hard on the ego as well.
18:46A pilot can always get rattled from a bad crash.
18:48You got to get back to the top of the hill
18:50and try to fix the mistakes you made.
18:55One more?
18:56One more.
19:00We are pushing towards one goal.
19:02One more!
19:03Let's go!
19:06Elevate the new pilot, qualify him.
19:11It's the Olympic season, so let's go!
19:14That's what I'm talking about, baby.
19:15Yeah, today's his day.
19:17Ha ha ha.
19:23Attention, we now have 35 minutes to competition start.
19:33It's scary to warm up that fast.
19:36Little movements, right?
19:37You can feel it.
19:39But it's do or die now, so nothing I can do.
19:42Gotta go for it.
19:43So we'll see.
19:44I'm sure we can.
19:49The North American Cup is a proving ground before you get on to the World Cup.
19:52You have the opportunity to get points that can get you qualified for the Olympic Games.
19:57That track is clear for USA team Grady Mercer from Bob's Start.
20:04Bobsleigh track.
20:05Foreman is the marquee sport in men's bobsleigh.
20:09It's the fastest, most dangerous.
20:12Go, go, go, go, go!
20:14It's the funnest to drive as well.
20:17Yeah, we should be like 152, 153 kilometers an hour today.
20:20Top speed 150 kilometers an hour.
20:23Our track is clear for Canada team Pat Norton from Bob's Start.
20:29Go, go, go, go, go!
20:32Today we're going to see spicy ice.
20:34Bobsleigh hit track.
20:35Bobsleigh hit track.
20:36It was cold last night and it's clear blue skies today, which is just a recipe for fast ice.
20:46149, top speed here for Canada's Pat Norton.
20:53A track is clear for Australia team Rhys Peters from Bob's Start.
20:57When the ice is hard, you get way less grip.
21:01So obviously that's a lot harder to drive.
21:04Okay, Dearborn underway with a 515 providing the grunt for him.
21:19Come on, go ahead, wake up, baby.
21:21So right now it's the pre-Olympic season.
21:25The pressure's starting to mount up.
21:26You're really starting to see how you stack up against the world
21:29and you're starting to see where the chips fall as far as your chances at the Olympics.
21:33Top speed 150, top speed.
21:35Great effort there.
21:37Jay Dearborn across 52, 25.
21:39That's good enough for second place there.
21:41Come here.
21:43Come on, Jay, wake up!
21:44So qualifying for the Olympics is based off of your ranking points you get from all the different circuits that you race on.
21:52The North American Cup, the Europe Cup, and the World Cup.
21:55That creates a ranking list of athletes.
21:57Ready?
21:59Come on, me, boy!
22:00Come on, Jay!
22:01And there's a cutoff, basically.
22:03And if you're inside of that, you go.
22:05And if you're outside of that, you don't go.
22:07Track is clear for Canada team Taylor Austin from Bob's Start.
22:10Ah!
22:13Come on, Jay!
22:16Back, dude!
22:17Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go!
22:20Bob's late in track.
22:21And here comes Canada's Taylor Austin on board with him.
22:24Shane Ort, Mark Zanet, and Johan Eskrick-Parkinson.
22:31The 6-100's in it, coming out of corner seven, now down to four.
22:34This particular sled has a way of finding speed in the bottom half of the track.
22:38We'll expect no different this time.
22:41Austin, again, picking up speed at the bottom.
22:44Fastest speed, we've seen 151.5.
22:47Has Taylor Austin across 5189.
22:50Sitting comfortably on top of the board.
22:55Oh!
22:56Here we go, boys!
22:57We're gonna give the best crew to the best pilot.
23:00Right now, that looks like Taylor.
23:01There's a lot of potential on Taylor's team.
23:04When it comes down to it, the coaches are gonna make the teams for World Championships.
23:07We're gonna put our best foot forward.
23:08And everybody's gonna want to be on that top sled.
23:11I've always been the underdog since I was a little guy.
23:12That's how I like to live.
23:13I like when people don't believe.
23:14I like when people don't believe.
23:16My mum always liked working and she was a single mom.
23:18Everyone wanted to do it.
23:19definitely книги on top sled on top sledUND.
23:20If that's how I like to end up climbing with a middle판 on top sled
23:28I've always been the underdog since I was a little guy.
23:32That's how I like to live.
23:35I like when people don't believe.
23:42My mom always liked working and she was a single mother.
23:46I lost my father when I was three.
23:49I was making my own money when I was eight, nine years old
23:53to help her.
23:55And then I grew up on the track and field.
23:58But I started having problems,
24:01started hanging with, like, wrong people,
24:04and I was getting lost.
24:06But I was like, man, I promised myself
24:09that I would be an Olympian.
24:11My coach one day is like,
24:13hey, this thing called bobsled is going to have a trial.
24:16I don't know what the heck is this bobsled thing.
24:19I did the physical test.
24:21The team's like, all right, you guys, it's going to Canada.
24:24And I was like, I guess I go to Canada.
24:28We just came, meet these lads.
24:30You guys are going to jump on this thing.
24:32We go down this hill.
24:34But I didn't speak no English, right?
24:36Just got these lads, sit there, and then go down.
24:39I'm like, holy crap, this thing is fast for real, man.
24:46So, the 2014 Olympics was coming up.
24:53Russia, Sochi.
24:55But I ended up like that.
24:56I just became a despair.
24:58That's when I took a four-year's break.
25:01Ready, Liam?
25:02Let's go.
25:03Workout time.
25:05Okay, one more.
25:07Push, push, push, push, push, push, push.
25:09My first kid came, Dylan.
25:11And I was watching the Olympics again.
25:13I saw the Canadian team compete.
25:17Crips team.
25:18Got the bronze medal.
25:19And when I saw him coming out of the sled screaming and crying,
25:23I cried too.
25:25And that day, it's like I'm back to this.
25:30My roots, I take everywhere I go.
25:34I'm Brazilian.
25:35But I want to represent Canada because that was the country that showed me a different life.
25:43The country that embraced me and saved me.
25:47I want to make sure my kids grow up and say my father was an Olympian.
25:52Not only with Brazil, but with the country that I was born to.
25:56You guys, they will be hungry next year.
25:59They better be hungry because I'm starving.
26:01A little bit back.
26:02A little bit of work to do for our number two president.
26:05You've gone six seconds off the overall.
26:07Let's go, Boca.
26:08Come on, Team Grey.
26:09Let's go.
26:10Come on, Boca.
26:11Come on.
26:15We're the underdogs and we're just here to prove a point right now.
26:17We got the best pushing athletes on the team.
26:19Everybody knows it.
26:20And Taylor is the best driver that we have in our program in the country and one of the best in the world.
26:27Do you think his push times aren't that strong?
26:29100%.
26:30His push time is probably one of the worst ones on the world level.
26:35Track is clear for Team McKenna, Cyrus Gray, Shaq Marie Lawrence, Chris Holmsted.
26:41And De Sousa.
26:42Come on, Boca.
26:43Come on, baby.
26:44Come on.
26:45Here we go.
26:54Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
26:56And here comes Cyrus Gray and his guys, Marie Lawrence, Homsted, and De Sousa.
27:02That was a 494, there's a sub-5 push we've seen here, some of the most powerful pushers
27:10that we have here in Canada.
27:13Gray already locked him up.
27:18Run here for Cyrus, high 316, gets it down okay, 148 is the top speed, 5233 is the finish,
27:24sliding Cyrus Gray and his crew into 5th position after 7 sleds down.
27:32We didn't double check the brakes, we passed up probably 120.
27:39I mean we got the oldest sled in the field so I'm yanking on them, I'm pulling them as hard as I can,
27:46they're not catching and we're just praying, hoping we slow down.
27:50But we're okay, we're good, we're safe and we're ready to go again.
27:54Alright we'll take a look at the leaderboard here while we are getting that sled back,
27:58bit of an overshoot there for the team.
28:023rd place Dearborn, in 2nd place Norton, in 1st place Austin, that is after 7 sleds.
28:08Let it go, let it go Chris.
28:10What an ankle Shane, what an ankle baby!
28:13What are we talking about here?
28:15Today's been driving good and even with a new crew.
28:17Yeah they're doing good, push a little faster but getting down fast.
28:23I keep telling the Aussies that the easiest way to be faster at the bottom is just to push faster at the top.
28:28Yeah.
28:29We're 2 minutes to start for the men, 2 minutes to start, men's 4 man heat number 2.
28:35For the 2nd heat, you go down in reverse order from worst to first.
28:40He'll be going off last in the 2nd heat because he was the fastest on the 1st heat.
28:49Top speed for these guys, 144.
28:52Full 4 seconds ahead of the field, what a run.
28:55USA's Grady Mercer down 53-2-3, 2 runs for him at 146-3-1.
29:05Track is clear for candidate team Cyrus Gray.
29:07Let's go boys, big push.
29:11Come on boys, let's go!
29:14There's advantages to being the underdog.
29:16I mean, it gives you that drive, right?
29:20Let's go, dig, dig, dig!
29:24Here comes Gray with his big guys behind him, their 4-9-2.
29:28Nice, that's push.
29:32It's pressure in a different way.
29:34If you're the top person, you have every advantage.
29:36Then you feel this pressure of, you have to win.
29:39Versus the underdog, you've got nothing to lose.
29:41You're always pushing up.
29:4216-3-6, past corner 3.
29:449 tenths, now a full second into the lead.
29:48And you're getting closer and you're putting more pressure on those people in front of you that should be winning.
29:52That lead increasing now, 1.5 seconds.
29:55Now, 148 kilometers an hour.
29:58Good speed here for Cyrus Gray and his crew won in 0.85 seconds into first place.
30:03They go.
30:05And two runs at 144.
30:09Push time was the best of the day.
30:13Let's go, we're about to wake up!
30:15Fastest team on the field.
30:18Cyrus drove amazing on the second run.
30:22Cyrus crashed last week.
30:23Lost a little bit of his confidence, but he got his confidence back.
30:28He got his soul back.
30:29Gotta believe in the underdogs, man.
30:33Cyrus drove great in the second heat.
30:35First run was a little shaky, but he really laid down a good one on the second run.
30:38And that's kind of what you'd expect from somebody in his level of development.
30:43One sled to go.
30:45You got Taylor, who's a phenomenal driver.
30:47He's got a bunch of new rookies.
30:49And he's trying to show the old teammates that, hey, I don't need you guys.
30:54I mean, nobody was worried about us at the start of this, and now I think we got everybody's attention for sure.
31:00I would be worried if I was him.
31:03I mean, he should be.
31:05Woo!
31:06Come on, boys.
31:08Taylor doesn't have the best pushes right now.
31:09Those guys are young, inexperienced.
31:11They will get better.
31:13But for now, he's just relying on his driving ability.
31:15Track is clear for Canada team Taylor Austin.
31:19Shane told me something, buddy.
31:21Come on.
31:22Come on, Shane.
31:23Yeah, yeah.
31:24Come on!
31:27Fuck!
31:31And final block in track.
31:33This is it for all the marbles.
31:34This is Canada team Taylor Austin on board.
31:37Let's go!
31:38Let's go!
31:39Go!
31:40Go!
31:41Go!
31:42Go!
31:43Go!
31:44Go!
31:45Go!
31:46Go!
31:47Go!
31:48Go!
31:49Go!
31:50Go!
31:51Go!
31:52Go!
31:53Go!
31:54Go!
31:55Go!
31:56Two runs for him at 143.92, that's good enough for first place there.
32:03After all nine sleds down, third place Bindalati, second place Grave, first place Taylor Austin.
32:08I'm proud of the boys today, they stepped up, had a good couple of pushes, I'm happy
32:16to come away with a win.
32:21So close to be Taylor today, we've got one more time tomorrow, we're going to come with
32:31the same intensity, same work ethic, and get the job done.
32:38Yesterday was, was a hell of a run, and the brake stretch.
32:57I gave some taps there with the hammer.
33:04I'm excited to see if it's going to work today.
33:10The NAC race has two days of four-man racing, so you can actually get double the amount
33:25of points in a short amount of time than you would on the World Cup circuit.
33:29Man, I got a question.
33:30You think I got to rinse this out from yesterday?
33:32Nah.
33:33Let's go.
33:34Yeah, yeah.
33:35This is when science meets jock.
33:38So we start off with a dirty shaker cup from yesterday.
33:42From yesterday.
33:43With a little bit of residue in it from whatever I made.
33:46To clean alkaline water.
33:49Caesar, one full scoop?
33:51I got one and a half.
33:52Caesar wants to die.
33:54I don't want to die like that.
33:57Caesar, I'm giving you a good amount.
34:01That was it.
34:02It's time to take a sip, baby.
34:06Oh.
34:07Let's go.
34:09Everybody's got us counted out, and that's what we're going for.
34:12Another upset special.
34:14You got this, man.
34:19One forty six, come speed here for the Australian camp stopped this team.
34:2354 two one finish.
34:26Ahhhh!
34:33The track is clear for Canada team Cyrus Gray from Bob's dart.
34:40Go, go, go, go!
34:42Gray with a pretty decent league.
34:45One hundred fifty fastest speed we've seen.
34:47The brakes are not perfect right now, but it's better than yesterday.
35:02We fixed it.
35:03Let's see how it's going to be.
35:06This is Canada's Taylor Austin, 150 is the speed and it's just like that.
35:13100s into first place goes Canada's Taylor Austin, 51-94 is the finish there.
35:18We're sitting in second place right now, just only 10 hundreds behind Taylor's team.
35:24We're going for top spot.
35:26Let's take him, let's take him!
35:29The track is clear for candidate team Cyrus Gray from Bob's start.
35:33Let's go, come on baby, wake up!
35:39Let's go boys, let's hit it.
35:42Let's go.
35:43Let's take him!
35:44Let's go!
35:45Let's go!
35:46Let's go!
35:47Let's go!
35:48Let's go!
35:49Let's go!
35:50Let's go!
35:51Let's go!
35:52Let's go!
35:53Let's go!
35:54Box lane and track team, Canada Taylor Austin, not start.
35:59Push bar is out, push bar is out.
36:02Stand back, stand back!
36:06So I think it's a push bar malfunction, so like the pilot push bar didn't actually lock in, like you punch that lever and it's supposed to drop.
36:15You don't see that every day.
36:19Hopefully we get that slid back into the sled.
36:226-100s in front.
36:31Hold that start, hold that start.
36:36Come on, man.
37:01Come on, man.
37:02Come on.
37:03Come on, man.
37:04Just give me two eyes, man.
37:14He's had to bite you up.
37:16Bite you open.
37:19Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
37:20You need to see the doctor.
37:21You need to see the doctor.
37:22Oh, I don't need doctor, man.
37:23I'm good.
37:24You didn't work.
37:25You tried.
37:26I saw you tried.
37:27You tried.
37:28You tried.
37:29You got to see what the **** did.
37:38Push bar is going to be your act, eh?
37:40You got a size push bar?
37:41Yeah.
37:42Oh, man.
37:43Oh, no.
37:44Where's that thing?
37:45Yeah, that's good, too.
37:46Shoot.
37:59We thought you had it close.
38:00He's like...
38:01He's trying.
38:02I took right the floor, bro.
38:03I know.
38:04I'm driving with one hand.
38:06Can you believe in that?
38:07With the power open.
38:08Yeah.
38:09With that one.
38:10We walked down.
38:11Did anyone notice any sort of ics in the body?
38:15I think we should talk about some hands up.
38:16Just some hands up.
38:17Just some hands up.
38:18Just some hands up.
38:19Okay.
38:32Taylor Austin, Team Canada.
38:33Having a blinder of a series here for North America's Cup.
38:37Good speed at 150 kilometers an hour.
38:40What can you expect?
38:41And there it is.
38:425189 is the finish.
38:44Taylor Austin into the number one spot with the 14383.
38:48And with that, it concludes North America's Cup off sleigh racing.
38:52What am I talking about, dude?
38:54Double gold.
38:55What were you saying?
38:56What ankle?
38:57What ankle?
38:58What ankle?
38:59What ankle?
39:00What ankle?
39:01What ankle?
39:02What ankle?
39:03That's the only part that can, you know, you know.
39:04These guys are celebrating.
39:05And breaking the cement.
39:06Yeah.
39:07You know.
39:08The good cement.
39:09It's a common accord.
39:10It's all right.
39:11It's all good.
39:12I know you're right.
39:13You're not so happy.
39:15Well, you know, we did what we could.
39:17You know, when I look back on the athletes that have achieved Olympic medals, they all
39:35have some type of massive disappointment in their career that lit a fire under them
39:40to do that extra next thing that takes them from being that top six or top eight person
39:46to standing on top of the podium.
39:51And in first place, representing Canada, Taylor Austin, Shane Ort, Mark Zenit.
39:58I've been sliding for 12, 13 years already. I'll be 36 at the next Olympics, so that's it for me.
40:21I'm excited to see what I can do in the next two years, what the team around me can bring.
40:30The guys that are with me right now, you know, I'd love to see them racing me at the World Championships.
40:37We'll have to see how these guys do through the rest of the year.
40:39Even though there's some other guys that are pushing faster straight off the top, I think we showed that we're in range of them.
40:48Man, if it wasn't the pilot bar today, we would definitely make some noise.
40:53You did a great job going down with that thing. So close, so close to Taylor, so close.
40:58Just gotta stay hungry real good.
41:01As a younger driver or a newer driver, your goal is to knock off the top sleds, to take their spot.
41:07That's the name of the game, right? If you want to move up to the World Cup, you've got to beat a World Cup sled.
41:13We're within 500s of guys we've been pushing together for months, years even.
41:17Yeah. Man, I ain't worried about that.
41:18It is a high performance sport. And at the end of the day, the best people are going to race with me.
41:22I don't have a crystal ball. Injuries could happen, people could come up, people could go down.
41:27Well, let's have to see.
41:29Canada!
41:30Team on three, team on me. One, two, three, team!
41:33The team is very united right now. We're working hard.
41:37But Taylor is the best pilot on the Canadian system.
41:42And being so close to him, just a little bit frustrated, you know?
41:47We just don't have the equipment that will help us to achieve the highest place in the podium yet.
41:55The underdogs, man. We don't stop until we get it.
41:59If you don't beat your own teammates, you don't get to go compete against the rest of the world at the highest level.
42:05But eventually you have to work with your opponents on your own team to push each other and work together so that you can beat the rest of the world.
42:17Training, working, and being in a team is very important to me.
42:34Because at the end of the day, I want to be in the Olympics.
42:39I push hard every moment I'm on that sled.
42:44I have no idea how to push less than 120%.
42:48You're up, Boca!
42:51Man, I just want to be the best.
42:54I said to myself in the beginning, when I jump on the Canadian team, I say I will be one of the best on this team.
43:03And I'll prove to you guys how I will be.
43:07Let's go!
43:08Let's go, Boca!
43:09Let's go!
43:10Let's go!
43:11Let's go!
43:12Let's go!
43:13Let's do it!
43:3632-year-old male, multiple fractures, right femur,
43:39suspected spinal trauma, ETA two minutes.
43:42Go to the hallway.
43:43Come into the chair.
43:44Don't do this.
43:453-year-old male, two-one-forty overnight.
43:47Can you hear me?
43:48My name is Dr. Jay.
43:49Spiders are dropping.
43:50Two, one...
43:51No!
43:53Ah!
43:54No!
43:55Ah!
