A 23-year-old excise constable was critically injured after being run over by suspected ganja smugglers during a routine vehicle check in Telangana’s Nizamabad district. The incident occurred on January 23, 2026, near Madhavnagar village.

The injured officer, Gajula Soumya, had been serving in the excise department for the past 20 months. According to officials, an excise team stopped a car on suspicion of ganja transport. During the check, the driver suddenly reversed the vehicle, knocking down Soumya, before crashing into a tree or an electric pole and fleeing the spot.

Soumya sustained severe abdominal injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in Nizamabad, where she was admitted to the ICU. Doctors were forced to surgically remove one of her kidneys due to the extent of the injuries. While her condition was initially critical, some reports later stated that she was out of immediate danger.

Excise officials registered a case against five suspected ganja smugglers from Nirmal district at the Nizamabad police station. Two of the accused were arrested shortly after the incident, and around 2 kg of dry ganja was seized from the vehicle. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest the remaining suspects.

Following the incident, agitated excise staff staged a dharna demanding strict action against those responsible and raising concerns over alleged lapses by a circle inspector. Senior officials, including Deputy Commissioner V. Somireddy, assured the staff of justice and announced that Soumya would receive her full salary until recovery. An internal inquiry has also been initiated.

The incident has once again highlighted the serious risks faced by enforcement personnel involved in curbing ganja smuggling in the region.
