SHO Jumps Into Drain to Save Child: Meerut Search Operation Exposes Deadly Open Drains

In a dramatic rescue attempt in Meerut’s TP Nagar area, Station House Officer (SHO) Arun Mishra jumped into a deep, fast-flowing open drain to search for a child reportedly swept away while collecting glass bottles. The incident took place near Delhi Road Mandi and triggered a large-scale rescue operation involving police, fire services and municipal teams.

According to initial information, a 10-year-old boy was suspected to have fallen into the drain. However, despite hours of intensive search, authorities have not been able to confirm the child’s fall or trace him so far.

SHO Arun Mishra removed his police uniform and personally entered the drain, searching for several hours. JCB machines were deployed to clear debris and sludge from the drain across a stretch of nearly one kilometre to aid the operation.

Police said rescue teams also checked nearby areas and questioned local residents, but no concrete evidence confirming the child’s presence in the drain has emerged. As of January 26–27, 2026, the search operation was still ongoing without any breakthrough.

The incident has once again highlighted serious civic lapses in Meerut, particularly the danger posed by open drains. Officials said this is the third such incident reported in the city within the last 10 days. Municipal authorities have cited maintenance-related issues, while locals have blamed negligence and lack of safety measures.
