00:00. . .
00:29A killer had great access to both of these bedrooms
00:33and carried out these unnoticed crimes.
00:38Who has access to both of these students?
00:41I mean, who has a reason to do this sort of thing?
00:44Everybody was thinking, we've got a serial killer loose here.
00:49FBI. Criminal Pursuit.
00:59September 28, 2000.
01:05It's a quiet day on the campus of Gallaudet University,
01:10the Harvard of higher education for the deaf.
01:15Surrounded on all four sides by fencing,
01:19the campus is a tranquil island in one of D.C.'s roughest neighborhoods.
01:25Once you got right outside of Gallaudet, you'd get mugged like that.
01:29The fences didn't, to me, feel safe
01:34because things can happen inside of an island, not just outside of an island.
01:48At 8 p.m. in Cogswell Hall,
01:51a male student nervously approaches resident advisor Lauren Huesby.
01:56He told me that he was supposed to meet up with Eric Plunkett for a tutoring session.
02:08So I told him, you know, why don't we wait a few minutes and see,
02:12maybe he'll show up a little bit later.
02:14But he was really persistent.
02:22He wanted me to check his room.
02:24And the other thing about him,
02:26he said that Eric Plunkett's room had smelled funny.
02:30Lauren follows the student to Eric Plunkett's room at the end of the hall.
02:34She notices that Eric's door is closed.
02:41That's unusual for the outgoing 19-year-old freshman
02:45who has a mild case of cerebral palsy.
02:50Lauren can't enter the room alone.
02:52The rule is that I was supposed to have a second person there
02:57for witnessing purposes.
02:59And also, that would have to be a male.
03:05She finds resident advisor Thomas Cook.
03:11And then Lauren showed up in my room,
03:13and I was like, hey, what's going on?
03:15And she said, "I don't know."
03:17Someone reported that Eric's room smelled funny.
03:19So I said, all right, well, let's check it out.
03:26As he approaches Eric's room,
03:29Thomas feels uneasy.
03:33It was very strange to have his door closed
03:36because most of the time his door was open.
03:40He was always welcoming everybody.
03:42Anybody could go to his room at any time.
03:45He rings Eric's doorbell several times.
03:49The doorbell has a light bulb above the door.
04:04We could see that the light was flashing in the room
04:07when the doorbell rang,
04:10But there was no response.
04:11We have a master key
04:17where I can get into anyone's door
04:19at any time.
04:26We opened the door,
04:28turned the light on,
04:29and there was just a shocking scene.
04:34There was a big red splotch
04:36on the floor.
04:37I thought it was really odd,
04:44So I followed those spots.
04:45to his body.
04:49And his body was face down on the ground.
04:54Horrified,
04:55Thomas rushes to Eric's side.
04:59My very first thought was,
05:00I hope it's just a seizure.
05:02I hope it's something like that.
05:03but I was seeing so much blood around the room,
05:07I just knew.
05:16Thomas tells Lauren to call campus security
05:18while he gets their supervisor.
05:25I went to see my boss.
05:27I just said one word.
05:31I said,
05:32death.
05:34Thomas and his boss
05:35Hurry back to Eric's room.
05:43DC Metro Police are called to the scene.
05:46It's clear to them
05:47that Eric's death
05:48It was no accident.
05:52There was a broken chair in the room
05:54and they surmised
05:56that he was struck with the chair
05:57and maybe repeatedly
05:58with parts of the chair.
06:02Could someone
06:03have snuck onto campus
06:04and broken into Eric's room
06:06To rob him?
06:08Investigators look around,
06:10but nothing seems out of place.
06:13There were certain items
06:14that were left behind.
06:16His computer hadn't been touched
06:18and other items like that
06:19were still there
06:21inside the room.
06:22Detectives doubt
06:23that robbery was the motive.
06:24Does that mean
06:26a cold-hearted killer
06:28broke in
06:29or is the enemy
06:31within Gallaudet's walls?
06:37Technicians carefully recover
06:39blood samples,
06:40hairs
06:41fibers,
06:42and fingerprints,
06:43hoping to find
06:45DNA evidence
06:46that will lead them
06:47to a suspect.
06:50Eric's mother
06:52and stepfather,
06:52and stepfather,
06:53Kathleen and Chris Cornels,
06:55are asleep in Minnesota
06:57when police arrive
06:58at their house.
07:00Two o'clock in the morning.
07:01The phone rang
07:02at the same time
07:04that there was a loud rap
07:05on the front door
07:06and Kathleen responded
07:08and responded first
07:08to the telephone.
07:11Hello?
07:13Who is this?
07:18This is the police.
07:19The police are downstairs.
07:21What is this about?
07:24Okay, we're on our way.
07:25We'll be there in a minute.
07:26They asked if he,
07:37you know,
07:37was a student
07:38in Gallaudet,
07:39Washington, D.C.,
07:40Yes.
07:41Then they told us
07:42there had been
07:43an altercation
07:44and that he was
07:46dead.
07:50Eric's sister
07:51calls their father
07:53Craig Plunkett
07:54in Oregon.
07:55I believe she asked me
07:57if the police
07:58had come to the door.
08:00And I said,
08:01node,
08:02What's going on?
08:03And she says,
08:04They found Eric.
08:06dead
08:07in his dorm room.
08:10I have one chair
08:11that I sit in.
08:14I went over,
08:16I sat in my chair.
08:20I sat in that chair
08:21all day long.
08:24As word spreads rapidly
08:36around the small campus,
08:39Everyone is stunned.
08:41Though he was new
08:42to Gallaudet,
08:44Eric was already popular.
08:46I just kept thinking,
08:48Why him?
08:49I have to admit,
08:50I was starting to think,
08:51you know,
08:52well,
08:52maybe he was
08:53an easy target.
08:54I did think of that.
08:55He did have cerebral palsy.
08:57He did live alone.
08:59He lived at the very last
09:00room on the hallway.
09:01He wasn't very close
09:02to where traffic areas
09:03where people congregated.
09:08Detectives begin
09:09interviewing witnesses.
09:10Because of the language barrier,
09:12It's a painstaking process.
09:14You're oftentimes restricted
09:17on the pace of the interview
09:20because a lot of times
09:22you have to go through
09:22an interpreter.
09:23And so it takes so much longer.
09:26And sometimes you miss out
09:27on nuances and things like that
09:29that you would typically pick up
09:30on someone who could speak to you.
09:36Detectives finally gleaned
09:38Some intriguing information.
09:39Eric was homosexual
09:42and had recently become
09:44secretary of a campus club
09:46for gay and lesbian students.
09:48There's great concern
09:50that it was the result
09:51of a hate crime
09:52due to his particular sexuality.
09:58One student even tells detectives
10:00that he saw another student sign,
10:03one less fag,
10:05after Eric died.
10:06Everyone was really
10:09blaming each other.
10:12And there's another
10:13possible motive.
10:15Could Eric have been killed
10:17By a lover?
10:18What they saw in the crime scene
10:20This was a crime of passion.
10:23It was their impression
10:24that this was perpetrated
10:26by somebody that had
10:28an emotional attachment to Eric.
10:30A potential suspect emerges
10:36when a student reveals
10:38that Eric was in
10:39a romantic relationship.
10:42The student doesn't know
10:43the young man's identity,
10:45just the first name,
10:47Thomas,
10:48and the last initial,
10:50B.
10:52Was Eric killed
10:53by his boyfriend,
10:55an angry student,
10:57Or by a complete stranger?
10:59It's a riddle
11:02that only the FBI
11:03will be able to answer.
11:05But not before
11:07the campus is thrust deeper
11:09into a bloody nightmare.
11:12I was very scared
11:13and nervous.
11:15I felt to the point
11:16that I just wasn't safe anymore.
11:19It's been less than 24 hours
11:32since 19-year-old college freshman
11:35Eric Plunkett
11:36was beaten to death
11:37in his dorm room
11:38at Gallaudet,
11:40a university for deaf students
11:42in Washington, D.C.
11:43A makeshift memorial
11:46grows outside
11:47his dorm window.
11:51We had a vigil
11:52right in front of Cogswell Hall,
11:55and we had a tree there,
11:58and we put flowers,
12:01pictures of Eric,
12:02and we tried
12:07to mourn Eric.
12:09Grief-stricken,
12:11Eric's mother,
12:12stepfather,
12:13and sister
12:14arrive in D.C.,
12:16where they're met
12:17by detectives.
12:20They took us
12:21right to the precinct.
12:24They took us
12:25into a conference room,
12:27and we expected
12:29to get information
12:30in that session.
12:33And they were
12:35basically interviewing us,
12:37asking us questions.
12:41And there's a reason.
12:43During their search
12:44of Eric's room,
12:46detectives discovered
12:47that Eric's computer
12:48was powered up.
12:50He was instant messaging
12:51his sister, Eric,
12:53who is likely
12:54the last person
12:55who saw him alive.
12:57Does she have clues
12:58as to what happened
13:00in the moments
13:00Before Eric's death?
13:03They wanted to understand
13:04from her,
13:06What were you guys?
13:06Talking about?
13:07What was the conversation
13:08leading up to that?
13:09Did you see anything?
13:11Did he tell you anything?
13:12What was going on?
13:15Aaron tells detectives
13:16that Eric seemed
13:17totally normal
13:18during their last chat,
13:20except for one
13:22eerie moment.
13:24When Aaron
13:26was communicating
13:26with Eric
13:27with the webcam
13:28going on,
13:29she noticed
13:30that somebody
13:30walked by.
13:35Who was lingering
13:37By Eric's door?
13:40Detectives
13:40need to find out.
13:43Eric's family
13:44leaves the precinct
13:46and makes the grim trip
13:48to Gal Udette.
13:54Eric's mother
13:55flashbacks
13:56to the day
13:57She dropped Eric off.
13:59We were getting ready
14:01to leave
14:01And we had a hug.
14:03And I said,
14:04just the typical
14:05Good luck!
14:07I don't want to leave you.
14:08and he's like,
14:14Mom,
14:14You don't have to worry.
14:15about me,
14:15I'll be fine.
14:17And those were
14:18the last words
14:20that he said to me
14:21when I last physically
14:22was with him.
14:24Don't worry about me,
14:25Mom,
14:25I'll be fine.
14:25With only a fuzzy
14:36webcam image
14:37as a lead,
14:38detectives continue
14:39their investigation.
14:41They focus on
14:42Eric's resident advisor,
14:44Thomas Cook,
14:45who discovered
14:46the body.
14:48Cook has a master key
14:50to every dorm room
14:51in the building,
14:52including Eric's.
14:54It's typical
14:55in homicide investigations
14:56to scrutinize
14:58the individual
14:59that found the body.
15:01That's kind of
15:02Basic police work.
15:04At the same time,
15:05detectives try
15:06to track down
15:07a student named
15:08Thomas B.,
15:09who was allegedly
15:10in a relationship
15:12with Eric.
15:13They first got
15:14a name of Thomas B.
15:16from some
15:16of the other students.
15:18They really couldn't
15:18identify who
15:19that person was initially,
15:21but in reviewing
15:21some of the log books
15:22and other records,
15:24that's when they
15:24finally came up
15:25with the name
15:25of Thomas Minch.
15:32Thomas Minch
15:33is a freshman
15:34with no criminal record
15:36and no disciplinary problems
15:38at the school.
15:43He was also determined
15:45that they apparently
15:46had a bit of a falling out
15:47sometime prior
15:48to his death.
15:59Detectives debate
16:01whether the killer
16:02targeted Eric
16:03for being homosexual
16:04or if Thomas Minch
16:06killed himself
16:08his former friend.
16:12It's now been
16:13five days
16:14since Eric's murder
16:15and detectives
16:17are desperate
16:17for answers.
16:21They bring
16:2218-year-old
16:23Thomas Minch
16:24in for questioning.
16:35Thomas,
16:36I appreciate you
16:36coming in
16:36to speak with me today.
16:39Detectives interview
16:40Minch
16:40for more than
16:41two hours.
16:45Yes,
16:45I pushed him down.
16:47Only?
16:48Minch admits
16:49he and Eric
16:50had been close
16:51and fought
16:53when Minch
16:54The relationship ended.
16:57He admitted
16:57that he had been
16:59in an argument
16:59sometime before
17:00and he admitted
17:02that during
17:02that argument
17:03he pushed
17:04Eric.
17:06Once Minch
17:07admitted
17:08to this physical
17:09violence
17:09of Eric Plunkett
17:10then the interview
17:11Stopped.
17:13Thomas,
17:13stand up.
17:14Stand up.
17:15What?
17:15Stand up out
17:16of your chair.
17:16Why?
17:17Chance is behind your back.
17:19You're under arrest
17:19for the murder
17:20of Eric Plunkett.
17:21You have the right
17:22to remain silent.
17:23And that was accepted
17:24as a confession
17:25that he in fact
17:26had essentially
17:27beaten Eric Plunkett
17:29to death.
17:29D.C. Metropolitan Police
17:38arrest Thomas Minch
17:39and charge him
17:41with second-degree murder.
17:45But,
17:46as time will tell,
17:49not everything
17:50It is as it seems.
17:53You should never
17:53lock yourself
17:55into one theory
17:57without challenging
17:59that theory
18:00every step
18:01of the way.
18:13Just hours
18:14after Thomas Minch
18:16is arrested
18:16for the murder
18:17of Eric Plunkett
18:18the sensational news
18:21of one deaf student
18:22killing another
18:23on a world-renowned campus
18:25floods the airwaves.
18:27We saw a lot
18:33of it in the papers
18:34of course
18:34and we saw
18:35a lot on the internet.
18:37I mean,
18:38It's strange.
18:39to see
18:40your son's
18:41name
18:42in the newspaper
18:43and especially
18:44attached to something
18:45Like this.
18:46D.C. Metro Police
18:48are convinced
18:49there is only
18:49one reason
18:50for the murder.
18:51of falling out
18:53between Minch
18:54and Plunkett.
18:55Nobody had any reason
18:56to believe
18:57that this could
18:58have been a robbery.
19:10Detectives collect
19:12fingerprints,
19:13blood,
19:14and handwriting
19:15samples
19:15from Minch
19:16to compare
19:17to evidence
19:18collected
19:18at the crime scene.
19:29But almost
19:30as quickly
19:31as the case
19:31appears to close
19:33there is a shocking
19:34turn of events.
19:37Basically
19:37the U.S. Attorney's
19:38office said
19:39you do not have
19:39enough probable cause
19:40to make an arrest.
19:41You should not have
19:42made an arrest
19:43on this.
19:43We're going to
19:44throw the case
19:44out at this point.
19:46to everyone's
19:50surprise
19:51Minch
19:52is released
19:53though he remains
19:55the chief suspect.
20:01Eric's family
20:02learns of the
20:03dramatic development
20:04the day
20:05of Eric's funeral.
20:08What do you mean
20:08Did you let him go?
20:09He confessed.
20:12It didn't make sense.
20:13Didn't compute.
20:16Once again
20:19the Gallaudet campus
20:21is gripped
20:22with fear.
20:25The students
20:26felt nervous
20:28about
20:29Minch's release.
20:31They were looking
20:32behind their backs
20:33making sure
20:34they were safe
20:35and
20:36and
20:36they complained
20:38to the
20:38president
20:39of the
20:40university
20:40and
20:41the
20:41president
20:41had told
20:42them
20:42you know
20:43that
20:43he won't
20:44be coming
20:44back to school
20:45until the
20:46investigation's
20:46over
20:47and
20:48that he
20:49It was suspended.
20:55Minch
20:55returns to his
20:56home in
20:57New Hampshire
20:58but students
20:59I can't help
21:00but wonder
21:01has a killer
21:02been set free?
21:07Eric's mother
21:07writes an open letter
21:09to students
21:10encouraging them
21:11to stay calm.
21:13My strong hope
21:14is that this tragedy
21:15does not deter
21:16other students
21:17from pursuing
21:18their goals
21:19and dreams
21:19at this university.
21:21Please know
21:21that Eric's brief
21:22stay here
21:22It was wonderful.
21:23part of his life
21:24his first real
21:25step towards
21:26independence.
21:26my sincerest
21:28wishes
21:29for continuing
21:30success
21:31for Gallaudet

21:40January
21:412001
21:42three months
21:44after Eric
21:44Plunkett's
21:45murder
21:45classes
21:46summary
21:47at Gallaudet.
21:48Everyone felt
21:49that we were
21:50back for the
21:51second semester
21:52and that it
21:54would be a
21:54pretty good
21:54semester.
21:56That optimism
21:58is shattered
21:59in the early
22:00morning hours
22:01of February 3rd.
22:03A fire alarm
22:04goes off
22:05at Cogswell Hall
22:06the same dorm
22:08where Eric
22:09Plunkett
22:09was killed.
22:11The alarm
22:11is accompanied
22:12by flashing lights
22:13to alert
22:14profoundly deaf
22:16students.
22:17Hughesby
22:18and the other
22:18RAs
22:19go room to room
22:20making sure
22:22Everyone evacuates.
22:23and I saw
22:25the other
22:26FROG
22:27who
22:28recently
22:28checked
22:29the fourth
22:30floor.
22:32His facial
22:33expression
22:33was really
22:34In shock.
22:39He looked
22:40down
22:40to talk
22:41to my
22:41supervisor
22:42and they
22:43said
22:43there's
22:43another
22:44one
22:44and I
22:45thought
22:46what are
22:46you talking
22:47about
22:47another
22:47one?
22:48there's
22:56another
22:57dead body
22:58and I
22:58said
22:59What?
22:59I just
23:00couldn't
23:00believe it
23:01this
23:01can't
23:02be
23:02happening
23:02again.

28:01that really
28:01slowed down
28:02that process
28:03and there
28:03was a number
28:04of individuals
28:04that needed
28:05to be
28:06interviewed
28:06and so that
28:07took several
28:08days to get
28:09through all
28:09that
28:09the agents
28:14Stick with it
28:15convinced that
28:16the heartless
28:17killer
28:17is within

28:19the killer
28:21had great
28:22access to

28:24rooms
28:24and carried
28:26out these
28:26crimes
28:27unnoticed
28:28so it
28:29was fairly
28:31clear to
28:31us that
28:32we're dealing
28:32with somebody
28:33that is
28:34on campus
28:36and very
28:37likely
28:37resided within
28:38the dormitory
28:39itself
28:40to be able
28:40to gain
28:41that level
28:41of access
28:42without raising
28:43anybody's
28:43scrutiny
28:44investigators
28:47learn that
28:48resident
28:48advisor
28:49Thomas Cook
28:50who had
28:51discovered
28:51Eric Plunkett's
28:52body
28:53lives across
28:54the hall
28:55from Ben
28:56this is

28:59Eric was
29:00my kid
29:00and Ben
29:01was my

29:17was just
29:17100%
29:19furious
29:19I mean
29:20who would
29:21have suspected
29:21who dare
29:22think that
29:23I would
29:23do something
29:24like that
29:24to think
29:25I would
29:25be a

29:26Cook's

29:34investigators
29:36turn their
29:37attention
29:38once again
29:39to Thomas
29:39Minch
29:40the man
29:41who had
29:41initially
29:42been charged
29:43with Eric
29:43Plunkett's
29:44murder
29:44who happened
29:45to be
29:46in D.C.
29:47at the
29:48team
29:48of Ben's
29:49killing
29:49they started
29:50looking at
29:51Thomas Minch
29:52and learned
29:52that he
29:53was scheduled
29:54to testify
29:54at a
29:55grand jury
29:55hearing
29:56in the
29:56next day
29:57and so
29:58they were
29:59concerned
30:00that he
30:01may have
30:01come into
30:02town
30:02early
30:02and
30:03still had
30:05access
30:05to
30:05the
30:06dormitory
30:07and may
30:07have
30:08committed
30:08this crime
30:08as well
30:09like everyone
30:13like everyone else
30:14Eric Plunkett's
30:15parents
30:16I can't believe it.
30:17This is happening.
30:18we just
30:21fell apart
30:22again
30:22we thought
30:24that it was
30:24Minch
30:25that did it
30:26but he's
30:27out of school
30:28only
30:29did he come
30:29back
30:30did someone
30:31else kill
30:32him
30:32what is going
30:34on
30:34the theory
30:37unravels
30:38when
30:38Minch's
30:39grand jury
30:40testimony
30:40reveals
30:41that he
30:42only confessed
30:43to getting
30:43into a fight
30:44with Eric
30:45not
30:46to killing
30:46him
30:47once the
30:48detective
30:48heard that
30:49I struck
30:50or I pushed
30:52Eric
30:52in his mind
30:53what he had
30:54was a confession
30:56and he
30:58didn't
30:58critically
30:58analyze
30:59how did
31:00this
31:00actually
31:00fit
31:01the crime
31:02as we
31:02know it
31:03without a
31:07confession
31:08and with
31:09in DNA
31:09evidence
31:10linking him
31:11either
31:11crime scene
31:12Thomas Minch
31:14is cleared
31:15as a suspect
31:16investigators
31:18have no
31:19other
31:19leave
31:20but they
31:21still suspect
31:23their killer
31:24is living
31:25on campus
31:26it seemed
31:27like such
31:27a peaceful
31:28quiet place
31:29and to have
31:31two of its
31:31students
31:32murdered
31:32in one
31:33dormitory
31:34just kind
31:34of violated
31:35all that
31:36tranquility
31:37that you
31:38experience
31:38when you're
31:39on that
31:39campus
31:39despite
31:41hundreds
31:41of interviews
31:42investigators
31:43can find
31:44no witnesses
31:45who saw
31:46or heard
31:47anything
