00:00It's been nearly a year since Rwandan-backed M23 rebels seized Goma, and life for civilians has changed dramatically.
00:08The takeover followed intense fighting that left many dead and wounded.
00:12Since then, residents have reported the forced transfers of civilians and operations targeting groups M23 considers hostile.
00:20Our people are living under constant oppression, what we call governance by crime, where there are no voices, no freedoms, and where, little by little, Rwanda, the so-called father of the M23, believes it can export the Rwandan model, which is a model that suffocates every form of freedom.
00:40The Rwandan president is not at all comfortable with peace processes or with the level of progress we have reached.
00:50I can remember in Rwanda, on December 15th, when we were in the final phase, he didn't show up.
00:55He did not come because he had a plan, a plan to intensify the conflict.
00:59In late January last year, the M23 captured Goma, one of the key provincial capitals in the mineral-rich eastern DRC, which has been plagued by fighting for three decades.
01:19M23 says it's fighting for reforms, better governance, and implementation of past peace agreements.
01:24I would like to begin by telling you why we are fighting.
01:34Our struggle has a name.
01:37Our struggle is the Democratic Republic of Congo.
01:44Why do we fight?
01:46We fight because, for decades, we have failed to make the Democratic Republic of Congo what it should be.
01:58The conflict has triggered mass displacement.
02:11Tens of thousands fled fighting before and after the city's capture, with hundreds of thousands displaced in the region overall as peace efforts fail.
02:19We fight.
02:21We fight.
02:46Time.
