M23 announces withdrawal from Uvira following US pressure

The rebel movement M23 has announced its exit from the strategically important city of Uvira in eastern DRC. This reportedly comes at the request of American mediators in the conflict between the M23 and the armed forces of the DR Congo.

00:00The rebel group M23 announced that its forces would exit the strategic city of Yuvira in eastern DRC.
00:10The rebel group announced its withdrawal on Wednesday and said that it would complete it on Thursday at the latest.
00:18The move reportedly comes at the request of mediators from the U.S.,
00:23which recently negotiated a peace deal between the DRC and Rwanda, accused of backing the M23.
00:33Despite the leaders of the two countries signing the peace agreement in Washington on 4th December,
00:39the M23 rebels were not included in the negotiations.
00:45As a result, they captured Yuvira, which is situated near the borders with Wurundi and Rwanda, just days after the peace deal.
00:55The M23 said its withdrawal was happening for the sake of peace,
00:59and reports confirmed that their troops began leaving the town voluntarily.
