00:00Hi folks, I'm Pat Malone. Hold on a second. Hold on a second Pat. We know it. I'm Mike Furnette and this is Pat Malone and I want to do the show opening because this is my hometown. This is Jefferson Parish. This is Family Graal. This is going to be a great tournament. This is our first tournament of the season right here in my hometown in Jefferson Parish. Sorry Pat.
00:30Hi folks, I'm Pat Malone. He's Mike Furnette.
00:59And this week we're following the Elite Redfish Tournament Series as they land in Jefferson Parish right here in Metairie, Louisiana.
01:06Mike, it's time for the 2022 Family Graal Festival. Let's preview it to the folks and let them know how that works.
01:13You know, this is a big event for Jefferson Parish and for the surrounding communities of New Orleans.
01:18We've got some really top names that are coming in to perform and there's all kinds of things out here. Food, entertainment, parades, you name it.
01:27Oh yeah, we've got a fishing tournament as well. Yeah, the fishing tournament. It doesn't take a back seat, but whenever you've got Nancy Wilson from Hart and Marie Osmond and Sister Sledge and you've got all this and you've got 20,000 spectators and they're packing in every night and the headliner, Martina McBride.
01:42At some point, the fishing tournament for us that just love entertainment and love having a good time, it almost does take a back seat.
01:50But we know for the anglers, it's a very important tour stop.
01:52Yep, it's a solo man tournament, Pat. And honestly, we've got some pretty tough conditions here.
01:58So it's going to be really interesting how we all perform during this tournament.
02:01Different ways of doing things for this event because of the big crowds down at Family Graw and because of the parking and all the kids and the families that are out there.
02:10In the morning, we have given them a set of boundaries and they're able to pick where they want to launch by simply sending us a FaceTime.
02:17It's now 6 a.m. I'm backing in the water.
02:20We're not used to this. You know, we're used to all launching out of one location.
02:23But because of the geographics of not only the Mardi Gras, but what we're doing, it just made sense for this tournament.
02:29You know, this is going to be one of our toughest tournaments that we've experienced over the years because water conditions are going to be pretty much milky.
02:38So technique-wise, sight casting, get that out of your head. It's going to be tough to do that.
02:43So believe it or not, there's going to be a lot of old-fashioned fishing here.
02:46There's going to be a lot of popping corks.
02:47No.
02:47Oh, yeah, because you're going to have to work the bait slow, you know, cast up on a point, cast over an oyster bed.
02:52If not, they're going to be working jig heads on the bottom pretty slow.
02:56My goal is to wind up at the end of the day with three fish in my live well to bring to the weigh-in.
03:00I don't want to say there's some luck involved in it, but there is some luck involved in it as far as what bites your bait.
03:06At the end of the day, it's about that $10,000 check, those valuable Angler of the Year points going towards a brand-new Tidewater Yamaha rig for Angler of the Year.
03:15Day one, we're ready to push off and get this party started. Mike, you ready to go?
03:19I've got to get in my truck and move on.
03:21You better hook this boat up and get down the highway.
03:23I've got to get going, man. You're holding me up. Let's do it.
03:25Okay, bro. Thank you so much for tuning in. That's been your Game Time Preview.
03:29Pat Malone from Mike Frenette. Y'all stay tuned.
03:31A lot of action this week right here in Metairie, Louisiana at the Family Golf Festival presented by Visit Jefferson Parish.
03:40First day of the Elite Solo Redfish Series, Metairie, Louisiana.
03:44As the field launches on day one, they do so at launch points of their choosing, as long as they launch within the official boundaries for this event.
03:54Get this party started.
03:56I ain't here to make it easy.
03:57After this short break and while the anglers are getting to their fish on day one, we'll take a sneak peek at the Family Golf Festival ground and then go right to day one's weigh-in.
04:09Elite Redfish Series Television is brought to you by Tidewater Boats, Yamaha Outboards, McLean Trailers, Frog Togs, Berkley Fishing, and many other fine sponsors.
04:23Welcome back to the Elite Redfish Series in Metairie, Louisiana in the Jefferson Parish.
04:32My name is Pat Malone and this is the Tidewater Boats Elite Redfish Tournament Series presented by Yamaha Outboards right here in Metairie, Louisiana.
04:41Here we go. We're ready. All the way from Marrero. You might even know who he is. He's fishing for Strike King.
04:46This is Mr. Mike Frenette. Come on, y'all. Put your hands together for him.
04:49Here we go. You're a new leader with 634 and I saved my $5,000. You're in first place, brother. Don't leave me hanging.
04:57Put your hands together and show some love. Come on, y'all.
05:03I had two bites today. I made about 30 casts where I caught him and it was in such a small area.
05:10I want to cast here a little longer. So about another 15 casts.
05:13Bam, I got another one and it was the dude. And he came up and he rolled.
05:18The way he went around the pipe, got on the oysters and it was over and done with it in a matter of five seconds.
05:22Put your hands together for your leader, Mr. Mike Frenette, coming off a big team win with us.
05:27Put your hands together for Four Horsemen Tackle Pro, Mr. Roger Dowdy. Come on up here, Roger.
05:33What's up, my brother? You got one also?
05:35This is what Jefferson Parish can produce. One redfish, one alive, 10 pounds even right there, folks.
05:42Look at this giant. Y'all put your hands together. What a beautiful fish and a great sport, Mr. Roger Dowdy.
05:47Here we go. We're ready for another pro drumming company fishing.
05:50This is going to bring you Mr. Max Martin and I believe our first two fish limit of the afternoon.
05:55Y'all put your hands together as he hits the stage. Come on now.
05:57He's got two fish. Makes it a little bit easier. Two alive. 1475, your new day one leader.
06:11This is Gary Marino. Y'all put your hands together for him. He's got family here.
06:16Hey, that's got to make the trip better, huh?
06:18It makes you feel a whole lot better.
06:20But he can take the lead with 1715. There you go, brother.
06:25Wow, y'all put your hands together. Your new leader.
06:27Ladies and gentlemen, this may be a $5,500 bonus fish right here.
06:35He's got to go over 10 pounds. Are you ready?
06:4010-14, your new big fish.
06:43And I've got a special little bait that I started throwing this year.
06:47Nobody's listening. Tell me what it is.
06:49It's a cross between a spinner bait, a topwater, a leadhead, a coco-hole minnow, and a gulp.
06:58A spinhead, coco, gulp, topwater minnow.
07:02That's it.
07:03Yeah, you can find those at Academy Sports and Outdoors. They're $8 a dozen.
07:08You're a good fibber.
07:09Brother, it's so good to have you on tour, Gary.
07:11Congratulations. Taking the lead.
07:13Here he comes. Y'all put your hands together for your Blazer Bay pro, Barney White.
07:17He's got two fish, two alive.
07:19His total weight, 1705, 10 100ths behind the leader.
07:23He's going to need a 10-14.
07:26He's got one fish.
07:2810-18 right there, the big fish so far.
07:31But your new Brecknell Scales big fish leader for sure.
07:39And up next, all the way from Tampa, Florida, y'all put your hands together for Jacob Meyer.
07:44I told him, I said, you got to come to the stage, brother.
07:46You had a tough day out there today.
07:47But these fish can turn on fast, and tomorrow can be a whole different thing.
07:51And right after I texted you, I actually found fish that were popping on the surface,
07:56and I just couldn't get them to eat.
07:58Stacey Fratina, y'all make her feel welcome.
08:01Another tough day on the water.
08:03Hit us up a couple times.
08:04Let us know what was going on.
08:05Talk about it.
08:06So, you know, the water blew out today with the north wind.
08:09Literally, the canals were dry.
08:11So I depend on those lithium pros, you know, to keep my trolling motors going all day
08:15and also my power poles.
08:17You know, we wouldn't be able to do it today without those power poles.
08:19With the wind blowing like that, you've got to stick those poles and be able to work the area.
08:23So glad you made the trip down from Florida to be with us.
08:25Thank you so much for having me.
08:26All right.
08:26Stacey Fratina, one more time, put your hands together for her.
08:29Thank you so much for tuning in.
08:30We're going to get out of the way.
08:31We're going to turn it back over to the bands.
08:33It's going to be a great time tonight.
08:35My name is Pat Malone.
08:36We'll see everybody tomorrow.
08:38Welcome back.
08:39The anglers have again launched at the location of their choice within the official boundaries
08:43and will fish a full eight-hour day.
08:46While they are looking for their winning fish, let's take a look back at Paul DeFriand's incredible round
08:51in this Elite Winning Ways episode.
08:54I'm Pat Malone, and this week it's a recap, a review, a look back at Paul DeFriand's incredible win
09:00at the Frog Talks finale.
09:02The Elite Fishing League was a fantastic idea.
09:06And, I mean, I think many people thought it was just that, an idea.
09:08Given a couple days, advance notice of where you need to show up, still not knowing where you're going,
09:13not knowing fishing locations.
09:16I mean, there's a lot of stuff, a lot of unknowns.
09:18See if we can see some fish, kind of see how the water clarity and how it sets up.
09:23I'm mainly looking to sight fish today.
09:25So, I mean, I'm looking for some decent water, maybe some grass, and just areas holding fish.
09:29Once again, specific boundaries were set.
09:32Anglers had to stay within those boundaries.
09:33And now, we are a good 130 miles from any water that was fished previously in the first two rounds.
09:40Just got to figure them out and get them to start biting.
09:43I mean, it's real heavy, heavy grass, so you got to put it right on to be able to catch them.
09:47Oh!
09:49Mm!
09:50Oh!
09:52So, I mean, after that first bad decision of picking the wrong area that had zero fish,
09:56we made a move, and I was able to catch my first one, and it actually put me in the lead.
10:00So, I pull down, I get everything set up, and we start to make a drift.
10:05And the fish I'm seeing, I said, man, we might have found it.
10:09Not a boat in sight.
10:10Another unique aspect of the EFL is one time per fishing period, anglers are allowed to make an additional cast.
10:16So, hook a fish, get that fish secured in your rod holder, and then you can make one more cast.
10:22So, if a school of fish are coming down a bank, you can hook up two at a time.
10:25Tell my referee, I'm grabbing my second rod, making my one cast, throw that out there, nothing.
10:32So, I reel that one in, thinking, man, at least I got one.
10:35Grab that one, start fighting it for, boom, comes off.
10:40So, I'm like, man, not only don't I have one fish, when I was trying to catch two, I have zero.
10:45So, I went back to the old sea, and a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush.
10:49I'm like, man, what is my day coming to?
10:52That's the kind of mistakes that you can't let happen.
10:54Keep going down the shoreline, and then I finally start hooking up.
10:58No!
11:04Nine pounds, eight ounces.
11:07Woo!
11:07Good to finally put a fish in the boat after three hookups, get down, fighting them.
11:15Woo-hoo-hoo!
11:20Fish that was in the net at 4.54.
11:25Eight pounds.
11:28Seven pounds, five ounces.
11:30I mean, I think we made the right moves, came to the right location.
11:33And one more fish to the bunch.
11:36All in all, great day.
11:38Day three, period two.
11:41So, I mean, the first event, first of its kind in salt water,
11:44three rounds of competition,
11:46you're waiting kind of anxiously for your turn.
11:49So, then round three comes,
11:50and when that final calls,
11:52and you become the champion of round three,
11:54I mean, it puts you in some pretty elite company.
11:57But, I mean, it's definitely a wonderful feeling to be a champion.
12:00A third qualifying round is in the book,
12:03and three tickets are punched all the way
12:05to the Tidewater Boats Tour Championship.
12:08Congratulations, Paul, on an impressive win.
12:12A hundred and twenty-one pounds of redfish caught and released in a single day.
12:16Now, let's head back to Family Graal
12:18and the conclusion to the Mardi Gras Cup Elite Redfish Tournament.
12:22This is the 2022 Tidewater Boats Elite Redfish Tournament Series
12:26presented by Yamaha Outboards.
12:29My name is Pat Malone,
12:30and this week is the Mardi Gras Cup
12:32right here in Metairie, Louisiana,
12:35in the Jefferson Parish.
12:36And we are so glad to be a part of it.
12:39This is Four Horsemen Tackle Pro, Mr. Roger Dowdy.
12:43Can you put your hands together and make some noise for him, Louisiana?
12:46Two fish, two alive.
12:47Get them weighed in at 13-14.
12:49That puts him in the lead.
12:50Come on now, put your hands together.
12:51We'll bring you Drum and Company Fishing Pro, Mr. Max Martin.
12:55Y'all put your hands together for Max.
12:56You got two of them today.
12:58Two fish, two alive.
12:59Drum and Company Fishing Pro, 10-15.
13:02Another new leader.
13:03There you go, brother.
13:06Here we go.
13:07He's coming off of a 17-15 yesterday.
13:10Spotted Addiction Pro, Gary Marino.
13:13You got two, brother?
13:15Two fish, two alive.
13:17Going to bring you in at 13-65.
13:21Great job, brother.
13:2113-65.
13:23There we go.
13:24Now you can put your hands together again and show some love, Metairie.
13:27All right.
13:27All the way from Mariro.
13:28Where's my buddy down front?
13:30Come on.
13:30Put your hands together for Strike King Pro, Mr. Mike Frenette.
13:34Come on, y'all.
13:35All right, buddy.
13:36Put him in there.
13:37You got one or two?
13:38Got one.
13:39Got one.
13:41Coming off of 6-34 yesterday.
13:43This one's going to be quite a bit better, 791, 791, almost eight pounds.
13:48Reach in, Mike.
13:49Let's pick it out and show the folks.
13:50Show some love.
13:51Come on.
13:51Mike Frenette, Strike King Pro.
13:58I know we're running out of time.
14:00I just want to say thank you for everybody that's attending this because this is our first time here.
14:05I'm from Jefferson Parish, obviously, and I love it.
14:08Great place to live.
14:09Love everybody that came out here.
14:12I hope to see y'all next year.
14:13I hope we come back.
14:15With the weigh-in concluded, the top five were escorted to the main stage to receive their
14:20awards in front of nearly 20,000 cheering fans.
14:29Stay tuned.
14:30We'll be right back to Metairie, Louisiana, and the conclusion to this exciting event.
14:35Welcome back.
14:35Before we head to the main stage for the awards presentation and the conclusion to a great
14:40week in the Jefferson Parish.
14:42Let's take a quick look at what makes this part of Louisiana so special.
14:46Visitors to New Orleans think walking down Bourbon Street is a wild adventure.
14:51And it is.
14:52But while you're in South Louisiana, you're going to want to keep another wild adventure in
14:56mind.
14:57You can come here to Lafitte for an airboat adventure.
15:00When you book a tour with airboat adventures, prepare to navigate 20,000 acres of cypress swamps
15:11as you drift past exotic creatures and enjoy the lush scenery of Louisiana bayous.
15:16You may choose to take the Louisiana alligator tour where you're going to see these prehistoric
15:21creatures lurking just above the water.
15:24The Louisiana alligator can reach top speeds of 20 miles an hour in the muddy waters of
15:30the swamps.
15:31This is clearly one of the most memorable tours you'll take in a lifetime.
15:36Louisiana produces nearly one-third of all the seafood consumed in America.
15:41Louisiana Oyster Trail, a collection of restaurants throughout this coastal parish that have mastered
15:47the art of preparing oysters as a main dish.
15:51There are dozens and dozens of ways to prepare this Southern delicacy, but none have caught
15:55fire like the char-grilled oyster created right here at Drago's Restaurant almost 30 years
16:00ago.
16:01And our famous Riccobono's Bloody Mary, that's a homemade Bloody Mary blend that we make and
16:06we top it with three fried oysters.
16:08So, you know, you can eat them, drink them, you can have them however you like.
16:11We're out of time, but if you're ready to start eating your way through the Louisiana Oyster
16:17Trail, just go to visitjeffersonparish.com and you're going to find dozens of restaurants
16:22where you see these Louisiana oyster sculptures outside, which means delicious oysters inside.
16:34All right, Mike, let's get right to it, brother.
16:36I mean, Gary Marino has never won on the Elite Redfish Series.
16:42Another first-time winner comes in here.
16:45I told you in the setup that somebody from Texas, if they're having to do the pop and
16:51cork muddy water thing, somebody from Texas might jump out here and surprise us.
16:56Tell us what you thought about the weigh-in.
16:57Are you rubbing that in my face?
16:58I'm kind of putting it right there.
16:59Hey, you're putting it right there for me.
17:01And we talked about that earlier, and that's exactly what happened, and it was muddy conditions.
17:06It was low water, and popping corks definitely did the trick, and guess what?
17:12I didn't use the popping corks.
17:13Sometimes it's hard to fish your home waters.
17:15It's a little bit tougher than traveling.
17:17To me, it's the worst waters to fish, because you've got so much knowledge, and it's hard
17:21to make that decision, and you're second-guessing yourself the whole time, and that's what you've
17:26got to get away from.
17:27You've just got to go fishing.
17:28Gary, like you said, from Texas, really hasn't spent a lot of time over here, if any, and
17:33he comes in, and he waxes us.
17:35What a job he did.
17:38Right off the board now, he's out in the points lead for Angler of the Year, but Mike, we
17:43would be remiss if we didn't take our viewers through a little bit of family grawl.
17:47I've never been in anything like that.
17:50I heard Nancy Wilson doing her sound check.
17:52I saw Marie Osmond, and then tonight, like I said, Martina Monson.
17:56McBride, man, Jefferson Parish really turns it out, and I think the 20,000-plus a day
18:01over there is kind of testament to how good of a job they do putting this event on.
18:05And, you know, there's never a problem.
18:07You know, everybody is well-behaved.
18:08It's a family atmosphere, great entertainment.
18:11I mean, this is a special event for the people of Jefferson Parish, and we also invite the
18:17local community, some Orleans Parish, you know, different places to come enjoy the family
18:21grawl because, you know, you have not only this great entertainment, but you've got these
18:25fantastic parades that pass right by this area.
18:28I mean, this is a job well done.
18:32Our award ceremony took place on the big stage in front of 20,000-plus people.
18:38Solid people.
18:38And I'm telling you right now, there's footage of that you're going to see.
18:41You're going to witness it, or you've already witnessed some of it.
18:43And the audience acted like they came just for the redfish anglers.
18:48I mean, they were so supportive.
18:49It was so good.
18:50And we know that they didn't because they came for the whole picture here.
18:55But, yeah, they were into it.
18:57There was a lot of cheering going on.
18:58I mean, they were into that part of it.
19:00And so, that was like an extra bonus for them because they weren't expecting it.
19:05And what it does, it showcases this area of how great the fishing is, even under tough conditions.
19:13I mean, everybody brought in tournament-quality fish.
19:17People that's watching it on TV.
19:19In New York somewhere.
19:20Yeah, they're looking to say, Jefferson Parish is putting on an event like that.
19:23I've got to make that on my calendar, you know, and bring my boat with me.
19:28Or hire a captain or do something because the fishing is awesome.
19:30Yeah, and that's the whole lure of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast and different things.
19:35The food, the fun, the family, and then the fishing.
19:39It's a great place to come visit, Jefferson Parish.
19:42But it's a great place to live as well.
19:43Well, I'll tell you what.
19:44That sounds like an invitation that I might just have to consider taking you up on.
19:48Folks, as you can tell, it's been wonderful to be here in Jefferson Parish.
19:51And it was the Mardi Gras Cup solo tour kickoff this year.
19:56Gary Marino comes out on top and takes the most valuable 410 Angler of the Year points into event number two.
20:04For Mike Frenette, I'm Pat Malone.
20:06Thank you so much for sharing this time with us.
20:07And we'll see you on the road whenever the Elite Fishing Series hits the trail again.
20:21Thank you for tuning in and watching this week's episode.
