00:02There's kind of like two categories of racers at the World Cups.
00:08People always say to the boys, like I've heard it so many times,
00:10you've got to pick one, you can't do everything.
00:15They seem so creative a lot of the time.
00:19It can become detrimental to a certain extent.
00:22I often feel like I'd love to do more of that stuff,
00:25but to be at the top in downhill, you've got to commit.
00:33Oh, he goes down! Wow, wow, wow!
00:51The first time I heard the word free racer was to describe my brother and boyfriend.
00:56Thanks for coming. I'll have you start by saying your name.
00:59Kate Edwards.
01:00What do you do?
01:01I'm a professional downhill rider for track for two racing.
01:05And what about you, mate?
01:06Chaos Seagrave.
01:08Oh, are you a free racer then?
01:09Yeah.
01:11Yeah, I think so.
01:15There's kind of like two categories of racers at the World Cups.
01:18What pulls them apart is their style.
01:20You've got the fully focused downhill racers who are just like,
01:25I need to go the fastest down the hill.
01:29Here comes Loris Berger!
01:32Look at the time!
01:34And then you've got other guys who are still super competitive but also bring an element of style.
01:41Which is like, obviously as a filmmaker, is one of the coolest things because you never know what you're going
01:45to get.
01:48Oh, my God.
01:51Yes, kid!
01:55Yeah, I guess someone who's come from a more free ride side, they get more of that poppy, playful, you
01:59know, Brendan Fertle kind of way of riding.
02:02Brendan, the original free racer, welcome.
02:04Actually, you know what?
02:05Let me give him this chewing gum.
02:06Come on.
02:07Okay.
02:08Yep.
02:10I reckon he was like the one and only for a long time, kind of before it even had a
02:14name.
02:16He's always racing, doing well.
02:17He just had fun on his bike and then he was in like the free ride stuff because he was
02:22doing Rampage.
02:23Look at that!
02:25There it is!
02:26He flipped the canyon!
02:27There's it!
02:28No way!
02:30What about you, Tani?
02:30Are you a, are you a free racer too?
02:33It was just so embarrassing to look back, but I did this one hand at once.
02:40What was that?
02:42I'm crying of embarrassment, but that was the first time I'd got introduced to like the free ride side from
02:48the boys.
02:49They love racing, but you know, you take them away from that and they've got so much more to give.
03:02I think you can just get over there.
03:03F*** it.
03:04Oh!
03:04Stabbed you.
03:10This way.
03:10I feel like if you are up along here, it won't be long until you're not up here.
03:18I can't remember the lines from last year.
03:19It's all grassed over.
03:22It's, erm...
03:22It's difficult.
03:23It's where I'm going.
03:27When I look at terrain, I then see my bike in the terrain, you know?
03:31I'll see myself in the terrain.
03:37Really high-end, 100% racers rely on people like that for line choice and, and flow.
03:45They seem so creative a lot of the time.
03:46Doing lines that other people haven't spotted, catching downsides other people haven't spotted.
03:51What's on the other side of the stump?
03:53Oh, another stump!
03:58It's actually not too bad.
04:03My head always works a little bit different.
04:05We're good.
04:09I'll be looking at lines where Rhys and Loris are like, dude, you'd never ever go there,
04:14because it's kind of out of the way, but it might look cool.
04:18Fine now.
04:20I'm lucky I've got Loris to guide me in the right place.
04:24Speaking of place, um...
04:27Has anyone seen Brendan?
04:44I mean, for the top guys, it's almost unheard of.
04:49They're resting up, they're going out on like a trail ride or something, just to stay sharp.
04:58Okay, he's out having fun on the bike.
05:08That's almost like his escape, like he loves just throwing down some tricks and hanging out with the homies.
05:17Yeah, no more fronties, I'm good.
05:19That spun slow.
05:21Since we're in junior, we've had it where people are like, hmm, surely you're just tiring yourself out.
05:26Like, surely you should be resting while you're going out riding after your practice.
05:30Like, you've been riding all day, while you have to ride more.
05:32Could you please?
05:35What's the point in just sitting there doing absolutely nothing?
05:41All good?
05:42People always say to the boys, like I've heard it so many times, you've got to pick one, you can't
05:45do everything.
05:47I think it's hard for them to find a good balance between both.
05:51And that's why a lot of people go down one route or the other.
05:56Oh, my God!
05:58I think racing requires so much energy and so much mental battles.
06:06You know, the desire for a free racer, it's like they're biffing in the free ride and they're like, oh,
06:10it could, what could be.
06:19You know, the grass is always greener.
06:24I also still like racing, but my creative side's for sure stronger.
06:28There we go.
06:30So many people are making a living from just expressing themselves for a bike.
06:34Instead of always against the clock.
06:39I'd like to do that.
06:53Yeah!
06:54You f***ing said it!
07:03You f***ing said it!
07:04You f***ing said it!
07:07You f***ing said it!
07:08You f***ing said it!
07:09You f***ing said it!
07:09You f***ing said it!
07:10You f***ing said it!
07:10You f***ing said it!
07:10You f***ing said it!
07:10You f***ing said it!
07:11You f***ing said it!
07:13You f***ing said it!
07:13You f***ing said it!
07:14You f***ing said it!
07:17You f***ing said it!
07:19You f***ing said it!
07:20You f***ing said it!
07:22You f***ing said it!
07:32Style-wise, how different is Braga from, say, a World Cup racer?
07:38Yeah, totally different. We're aerodynamic.
07:43He's in the baggiest gear doing his thing. He's got all his baggy cords on, his retro
07:48Fox t-shirt.
07:50He wears his dad's, like, f***ing 20-year-old Fox t-shirt and do anything to not look like
07:54the racers.
07:56Who's us? Go!
08:10I doubt you'd know that he was racing, kind of, on a team with me, doing the same thing
08:16as me. Even I forget sometimes.
08:22He's basically shown everyone that it's possible to make the change. And he's doing
08:27a way better job of what he's doing now.
08:33He puts a lot more effort than your average racer into media. He's doing stuff that nobody
08:39else on the planet would do. It's cool.
08:46It's cool that people can express themselves and make a living for it. I'd like to do that.
08:55I often feel like I'd love to do more of that stuff, but to be at the top in
08:59downhill, you've got to commit so much of your time to that.
09:02Kate Edwards, a former junior world champion and a man who can, on a bicycle, do whatever
09:08he wants.
09:14Kate and Chaos, like, they're not your typical go fast every run. They're going to play around.
09:19They're going to mess around. They're going to want to look good. They're going to spot
09:22a camera and show off.
09:26That's just who they are.
09:31It's like anything in life, isn't it? When you, like, get so invested into something and
09:36you've got your blinkers on, like, it can become detrimental to a certain extent.
09:45I wish I could rest like Loris. Just do it myself, man. The only thing you do is yourself.
10:04All right, ladies and gentlemen.
10:06Beautiful.
10:08Have a good weekend, by the way.
10:09It is all right.
10:10No, it's OK.
10:12It is what it is, really, isn't it?
10:14Like, I told you on the podium, I don't actually care about the rest of the result.
10:18I'd just like to see how you're riding.
10:20Yeah, thank you. I just f***ing want to do well.
10:22I was 17, which I'm stoked, but it could be way better.
10:27Racing isn't just one type of person.
10:29The other athletes, maybe the athletes that wouldn't consider themselves free racers,
10:32like, buzz off what those other guys and girls are doing.
10:36So, I think it's cool to have them here and just pushing the limits
10:40and showing different ways of riding sections.
10:42I think it provides just the richness and adds to the entertainment of a week at the races.
10:49Especially Cade, you know, they say to him,
10:51oh, you've got to pick one, you can't do everything.
10:52And Cade's always sat there and been like, well, why?
10:57So, Cade Edwards, the next man, a drop in.
11:06Oh, and he goes down! Wow, wow, wow!
11:09What a shame.
11:10Yeah, that went wrong.
11:12In my head, I was just like, I want to forget about that crash.
11:15And I just started riding how I'd normally ride if I was just on my own, you know?
11:19I might as well just have some fun and then think about the pain after.
11:25Brendan, you're back. Just in time. As a free racer, you won't want to miss this.
11:44I mean, if he didn't race downhill, he'd make really a free rider.
11:48He can do absolutely everything. One of the most phenomenal talents, this man on a man bike.
11:59I think if Cade wanted to go and just be 100% a free rider, he probably could.
12:04Honestly, one of the most exciting riders.
12:08But I think the best platform for earning respect and money and stamping a name into the sport
12:15is definitely in World Cup Downhill.
12:18He's the Formula One of our sport, in my opinion.
12:24I knew that obviously people would get stoked on it and it made me stoked as well.
12:28So it's just kind of a win-win.
12:32I got more coverage than the person in second.
12:41People get stuck in a rut of being kind of similar, you know?
12:44So I just want to be different.
12:46Yeah, boy!
12:48Yeah, I want to be Cade.
12:52It is cool that there's so many different disciplines within the same umbrella.
12:57So people can pick and choose.
12:59So there's something for everyone.
13:00At the end of the day, we can all meet up and go and ride the same trail together.
13:04And I think that is what stokes people out to ride bikes.
13:08Oh, I nailed it. Mic drop. Let's go.
13:13Stay tuned for more cycling fun, next on Racetapes.
13:18I don't think you're a normal person if you're doing this sport.
13:21You've definitely got to have some screws loose.
13:25It's taken me a long time working with a psychologist to realise I probably went over the limit on that
13:30sharpness of trying to be the best.
13:33Mental health in general is not talked about enough where it should be talked about.
13:38All right.
13:43You
