NBC6 sports anchor and reporter, Giselle Espinales, joins the show live at College Football Fan Fest to preview Miami - Indiana.
Transcript
00:00I hear that Giselle and I are dancing like Night at the Roxbury.
00:06What is that?
00:07Is that a movie?
00:08Are you joking?
00:09No.
00:10Will has always told me that her movie knowledge would shock me,
00:14like her 80s music and movie knowledge would shock me.
00:18You don't know Night at the Roxbury?
00:21No.
00:21I don't even think I've seen a clip.
00:23That is crazy.
00:24I'm really bad with movies, though.
00:25We've established this.
00:26It was Scarface that you've never seen, right?
00:30Still haven't seen, yeah.
00:31But that I've seen clips.
00:33Giselle Espinallis is with us from NBC6.
00:36She's here at Playoff Fan Central.
00:39You're doing some live hits for NBC?
00:41Live hits for NBC.
00:42We're following the team, too, because they're making their way down to the beach as well.
00:45Probably something Mario Cristobal doesn't like, but they have to.
00:48Probably they're obligated to do.
00:50They're coming down here today?
00:51They'll have media day here on Saturday, and then they're staying, you know,
00:55Fontainebleau, they're living the big-time life.
00:58Do you know, by the way, just because news people know better than radio people,
01:02do you know, there's a couple questions because Miami's technically the visiting school.
01:06Yeah.
01:07Do you know if they're going to get to run out of the smoke
01:09or they don't get to do that because they're the visitors?
01:12Oh, my gosh.
01:12That's a great question.
01:13People are texting me this all the time, and I don't know the answer.
01:17You know, it's crazy because there's some things that they're letting them do.
01:19So the college football playoff probably were like, no,
01:21you guys can actually stay practicing at the indoor practice facility
01:24because normally teams go to Barry, go to FAU, go to, you know,
01:27different places in town.
01:29But that's a great question because one of the best things about this,
01:32people are like, oh, my God, it's the Miami Hurricanes.
01:34I'm like, no, it is not the Miami Hurricanes home game.
01:37It's the National College football playoff game.
01:39They are the visiting team, and it's going to be, I don't know, like, I hope,
01:42but I don't think they'll allow that.
01:43Yeah, I don't know.
01:44I honestly, and I've seen differing accounts of what's going to happen
01:48because then we had this conversation yesterday about their locker room.
01:54They do get to stay in their locker room.
01:55So they do get to, because it's not so.
01:57Technically, it's their visiting.
01:59Well, it's like the other side.
02:00So normally the Dolphins, they don't even use that.
02:03But Indiana will get the Dolphins locker room.
02:05I mean, there's a lot of losing in there.
02:06So for the most part, at least they get all the bad stuff.
02:08Hey, hey, hey, hey.
02:09Sorry, go home.
02:09Sorry.
02:10I mean, listen, whatever juju vibes, I'm throwing it all there.
02:15We need it all.
02:16That's such a good point.
02:18Let them play with the Dolphins jerseys for all we care.
02:22Let them run out to the Dolphins fights.
02:28Put Mendoza in a number one Dolphins jersey, please.
02:32Is McDaniels Penn still there?
02:34What's life in there?
02:35Go, I get that too.
02:36Hold on.
02:37I'm getting a text from Victor Bermudez.
02:40You know, he is clued in.
02:41He said, we will have our same locker room and run out of the same tunnel, but we'll
02:48be standing on the visiting sideline.
02:51So they will be situated on the visiting sideline.
02:54But Vic does not specify here when they run out of the tunnel, if they get to run out of
02:58the smoke.
02:59But even if the CFP says, hey, you're not the home team, we're not going to do that.
03:04But the Hurricanes put somebody there with a fire extinguisher, a la the famous story
03:10with our friend John Ruth.
03:11John Ruth texting me right now.
03:13I mean, no joke.
03:14Don't you?
03:14I would say.
03:15But it isn't.
03:16It's not a big performance.
03:18The smoke.
03:19It's a little fire extinguisher.
03:20No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
03:21Don't try to diminish what it was.
03:23Where are the drums?
03:24Where's Phil Collins?
03:25Where's all the things?
03:26Do not diminish that.
03:27That is a big deal.
03:28A couple of hurricanes here, Crowder.
03:29We're not going to stand for your nonsense.
03:30Class of 2013, class of 01, 1901.
03:36I'm just kidding.
03:37I was so touched that he said class of 01.
03:41You know what year I graduated?
03:43Actually, wait.
03:45Our marriage difference is not that much.
03:46What?
03:48What?
03:48I love this woman.
03:4989?
03:5091.
03:5091, okay.
03:51But still part of championship era U, so that's pretty good.
03:54Hell yeah.
03:55Five, four years, 87 to 91 was like, oh, my God.
04:00I didn't know anything different.
04:02That's been the best part about this matchup, though.
04:03When everybody's talking about it, everyone's bringing out their vintage stuff.
04:06I'm like, this stuff is dusty as heck.
04:07And I'm like, but you know what?
04:09That's what you love about the fandom right now because everyone's excited.
04:13Pots and pans are on standby.
04:15I mean, we got to be ready to go.
04:16Are you guys ready?
04:17We have all picked Miami, even this Florida Gator down here.
04:21Yeah, I got to be honest.
04:22You got to root for Florida under my right check.
04:24No, it's funny because I'm unbiased and people are saying I'm a homer.
04:28I can't be a homer because I'm not a Cates fan.
04:30I just think UM is physically more talented than Indiana,
04:34and everybody's acting like they're going to get outcoached.
04:36They're going to have more penalties, obviously,
04:38because they're number, what, 123 in penalties in the nation or whatever.
04:41But they are going to get to a point in the fourth quarter
04:43where their athleticism and talent is going to take them over the top.
04:47I really believe that.
04:48You know, I caught up with Josie, and he was saying the exact same thing.
04:50Indiana hasn't seen physicality like this.
04:52And we got to go back to some of those cutaways from that game in the Fiesta Bowl
04:55where the defense was just like gas.
04:57And I remember watching this.
04:58I'm like, are they okay?
04:59Do they know that this is a game that punches the ticket to the national championship game?
05:02And here they are.
05:03I talked to them, some of them, yesterday, and they feel they look much better.
05:07They said, yeah, look, everybody's run down right now, but we're ready to go.
05:11We're going to go 1-0.
05:12Still that same mentality.
05:13They're not thinking it's the national championship game.
05:15I'm just like, this is it, 1-0 each week.
05:17And they really stuck through it.
05:18And here we are waiting to see what ends up happening.
05:20You're around all these guys as you cover this as it leads up to Monday,
05:24and you're around the coaching staff.
05:26Mario, since the Ole Miss game, seems to be cantankerous.
05:31Like, he likes butting heads.
05:33Does he have an edge to him when you see him?
05:36He's been wearing the same shirt to these pressers.
05:38I'm like, okay, he is definitely as superstitious as he comes.
05:40But when we remember his path alone, obviously, he's been here head coach for years.
05:44He has a ton of football experience.
05:45But this is also the closest he's ever gotten.
05:47And that also gives me goosebumps.
05:49I'm like, he's probably, you know, I'm not going to say he's like a strong football head,
05:53definitely runs that tight ship.
05:54But he's probably so excited.
05:56But also, maybe there's a little bit of nerves there because this is it.
06:00This is for him as a head coach to get as close as he has.
06:03Now, one win away to win it all, to bring back the glory days, something that he experienced himself.
06:07I mean, at this point, they got to make sure that they call the right game,
06:12which he had great calls in that festival win.
06:14We've had questionable calls throughout the years of him here as head coach.
06:17But he's gotten better.
06:18He's learned from it.
06:19And now it's time, nothing getting cute, nothing, no surprises, no Mallycats this time.
06:24Maybe it works against this Hoosiers defense.
06:26But for the most part, play the game of your life like it depends on me.
06:29Fletcher up the middle, man.
06:30Fletcher up the middle.
06:31I don't know.
06:32They say the Hoosiers run defense is pretty good.
06:34So I'm like, oh, is this the time where we see Carson Beck finally go ham, throw those passes?
06:38Let's go.
06:39When have you seen the Carson Beck game?
06:40I hope it's Monday night.
06:41This is grown man football they're going to play here.
06:44What's the, what, because this is kind of what you do where we just sit around and talk.
06:47What is the storyline?
06:48So we talked about it.
06:49Mendoza coming home.
06:50We know he went to Columbus and they have all that damn pride of him.
06:53Mario coming back to the team he played for to take over, to get them back on top.
06:57What's the story?
06:58What's the top storylines of this game?
07:00I mean, everybody's talking about Mendoza, Miami, but can we shut that down already?
07:03This is Miami hurricane sound.
07:04I got to tell my own anchor at NBC6, Jawan Strader.
07:07He's running around with his little Hoosier jersey.
07:08I'm like, do you know who we're covering?
07:10We cover the Miami hurricanes.
07:11So I think alone itself, the Mario Cristobal angle is always so popular.
07:15Like it's just like four years he came back.
07:17But I think in the end, it's going to come down to the guys that have pushed through, these veterans that pushed through, and the transfer students in an era of like they're going to bet on themselves.
07:25Now they're one win away.
07:26You know, I talked to CJ Daniels, and he's like, I had no idea what was going to come out of me leaving LSU.
07:31And here I am playing my last college game as possibly a national champion.
07:35And that's pretty impressive.
07:36And I think it's that drive that's going to keep these guys going and motivated.
07:39And even in that fourth quarter, if things get tight, where everyone's going to tie it up and make sure that they pull off a win because they want to finish their college careers.
07:46Nobody knows what's promised in the next level.
07:47And I'm sure you know that, Channing.
07:48Like you never know what's going to happen next.
07:50So they want to make sure they go out with the bang.
07:52And I think the Miami Hurricanes, that whole confidence is in there.
07:55And I think they can pull it off.
07:56Giselle's got that Kane swag.
07:58Where's my jacket?
07:59I don't have my jacket at home.
08:00I'm not even lying.
08:01She's got that Kane swag work.
08:03You were talking earlier about, you know, just like the enthusiasm around the team.
08:07Yeah.
08:08You've been covering now with NBC6 around the city.
08:11Do you feel that this is like big three Miami vibes or surpassing it maybe?
08:17Because all I've heard my entire life was, man, when this town finally gets another football winner, it's going to be crazy.
08:27And here we are on the precipice of it.
08:29And I don't know, like, do you feel that hype where it's like this place is about to go absolutely nuts?
08:35I feel it.
08:36And I also feel the nerves of it.
08:37Talking to so many people.
08:38We have seen them at games.
08:40We have seen them on the road.
08:41We've seen them here at home.
08:42And I feel like what's the crazy part about this?
08:45No matter what, the Dolphins still get shots fired because they'll be like, you know, it's been so long.
08:49Look at the Dolphins.
08:50Everybody says that.
08:51And I'm like, it's so crazy that we're talking about the Miami Hurricanes.
08:53It's something.
08:54And look, was it fun?
08:55We've been a part of that era of the big three with LeBron and bringing those championships.
08:59That was fun.
09:00But football is another kind of dynasty, another kind of fandom, another kind of energy that brings it to the town.
09:05And I think everybody is literally on standby.
09:0840th Street, Biscayne Boulevard, Coral Gables, waiting to go.
09:12It's the most, I think, also, I mean, I always wear my youth swag.
09:14Like, that's like, go to my closet.
09:16I have everything.
09:17Everybody's bringing out old school jerseys.
09:20When it's hot as heck, people are bringing out those big blazers that are like so hot and they're sweating, but they don't care.
09:26And I do feel there's an extra level of energy here in the city waiting to see, hoping that they get to see a national championship.
09:3324 years is a long time.
09:34Some of the fans that are so young right now saying they don't know anything about football, but they're like, go Canes, my parents.
09:39And I'm like, I can imagine what that feels like for families that have been waiting a long time.
09:43Let's get to the important stuff here before we run out of time.
09:46We know that you're not very good with movies.
09:48You've never seen Night at the Roxbury.
09:50You've never even heard of Night at the Roxbury.
09:52You've never seen Scarface.
09:53You had never tried, we learned, during McRib season this year, you had never tried a McRib.
10:00And then Solana said that you were going to try one.
10:05She was open to it.
10:05She was open to coming on the show.
10:07I was like, yeah, go on and try it.
10:07But we just never did it.
10:09Well, I thought she was going to get one.
10:11Did you end up getting a McRib?
10:13Listen, now that I've gotten older and wiser about what I put into my body, that is going to rip my stomach up.
10:18So I feel like, I mean, that's why we do it.
10:20Oh yeah, so I can fit into a dress the next day, basically, because we'll be on the toilet.
10:24Like, I don't want to have a beer, it's going to make me a little tipsy.
10:27Well, no, that's why you're having the beer.
10:29A beer and a McRib is a huge, much different.
10:31You're having the McRib to rip up your stomach.
10:33I mean, that's why else would you do it?
10:35I don't think I'll ever do it just because it's not appetizing to me, even though I love barbecue.
10:39But everyone says it's a good thing to do.
10:41I know you guys, like, also the shamrock shake, that also looked fun, but I'm also like, there's a lot of.
10:44You've never had a shamrock shake?
10:45No.
10:45Well, you've never had a shamrock shake?
10:47I'm like old school.
10:48I used to do bucket of fries, like when middle school, my bus would take me down there after, you know, I went to Miami Springs Middle School.
10:54And there was like a McDonald's is still there on 54th and Hialeah to everybody in Hialeah out there.
10:58That bucket of fries, double cheeseburger for a dollar, and that's it.
11:01We were not getting all these fancy things.
11:03Did you see one of the special menu items at the game Monday night?
11:07No, I haven't.
11:08Croqueta pizza.
11:09That sounds disgusting.
11:10Okay.
11:11That's interesting.
11:12Really?
11:12So you would not have, are you a croqueta fan?
11:14Love croquetas.
11:14Isla Canarias are my favorite ones.
11:16Have you been to Pica, Table and Tap, though?
11:18I have a long time ago when I used to live in the area.
11:21Because their like claim to fame at one point was the croqueta pizza.
11:24And their Islas Canarias croquetas.
11:27What?
11:27What kind of pizza, though?
11:29Like wood fire?
11:30Or is it like cold from a box?
11:31Wood fire.
11:32No, this place is fire.
11:33Okay.
11:34So you would not try that at the game Monday night.
11:36You would not have croqueta pizza.
11:37I think my nerves are going to be too much to eat anything, to be honest.
11:39I mean, I'm probably going to have like my pregame little meal of coffee and probably a bagel from Starbucks or something.
11:44But for the most part, I'm too nervous watching this.
11:46Even as I cover it, even at the festival, we're all screaming there like, if this is going to rely on the leg of Carter Davis, oh my goodness, when they were trying to tie it up.
11:54Well, that I was nervous about.
11:56But then Carson Beck saved the day and it didn't matter.
11:58So in the end, it all works out.
12:00But I can't imagine here what everybody's nerves are going to be like.
12:03So I can't even think of food right now.
12:05Well, the next time we talk to you, hopefully we're celebrating a Hurricanes victory, but you will hopefully have seen Scarface.
12:14Don't worry about Night at the Roxbury.
12:16I'll watch Stranger Things 10 more times.
12:17You can watch the SNL sketch, right?
12:19You can watch one sketch of Night at the Roxbury.
12:20You get the idea.
12:21Well, all you need to watch is the one scene where they're pumping their heads.
12:25Is that a sketch?
12:26Yeah, that came from a Saturday night live.
12:28It's a sketch.
12:29Yeah.
12:29Oh.
12:30Can't do it.
12:31Can't do it.
12:32Those are long movies.
12:33Where's the time?
12:33No, no.
12:33Watch Scarface.
12:34Watch Scarface.
12:35Three, eight, three hours.
12:36This is the one where, oh, see Tony.
12:39Tony.
12:39Tony Montana.
12:40You just said.
12:41No, that's not.
12:41You're doing an Italian thing.
12:43No, that's like Jackson.
12:44No, not Jackson.
12:45You're thinking of Sopranos.
12:45You're thinking of Sopranos.
12:47See, I don't even.
12:47It's like, wait, no.
12:48No, she's thinking of Tony Montana.
12:50Not Tony.
12:50She's like, welcome to my little bed.
12:52He's there.
12:52That's what the.
12:53Welcome to my little bed.
12:54Or something.
12:55I don't know.
12:55Which one did you watch?
12:58She's getting ready for your Tootsies commercial.
13:01Wild times.
13:02All right.
13:05You have to have a McRib or a Shamrock Shake, though.
13:08Shamrock Shake season is coming up because that's for March, for St. Patrick's Day.
13:11So probably middle of February, they unveil the Shamrock Shake.
13:15The only green I want to see right now is the orange and green.
13:18That's good.
13:18Thank you, guys, because it's all about to you.
13:20I'm locked in.
13:20No more food.
13:21She's locked in.
13:22Go Canes.
13:22She is locked in.
13:23Go Canes.
13:24That's Gisela Espinallis.
13:25You can watch her on NBC6.
13:26When's your next live hit coming up tonight?
13:28In 10 minutes.
13:2910 minutes.
13:304 o'clock.
13:31Are they leading the news with it?
13:33There's some breakers in there.
13:35So, like, maybe a little later than that.
13:374.08.
13:38NBC6 starting at 4 o'clock.
13:40Watch for Gisela.
13:41Thank you, Gisela.
13:42Thanks, guys.
