00:00:00Now let's go upstairs to our host, James Brown.
00:00:04All right, Jim, thank you very much, and I can't help but smile thinking about Jim Lampley's words
00:00:07in talking about Eric Morales, who was filing a very effective brief against Alberto Martinez,
00:00:13and I think it's also safe to say that he also filed a very effective closing argument.
00:00:18Very forceful indeed.
00:00:19All right, coming up next, we're going to have a featherweight bout between Kevin Kelly and Bones Adams.
00:00:24Certainly, boxing purists know all about the flushing flash.
00:00:27Kevin Kelly, a young man who, as Jim indicated, has a mouth that is as quick as his hands.
00:00:33Kevin Kelly says he wants to regain the lofty status that he did enjoy as a featherweight champion.
00:00:38Interestingly, he talked about becoming mentally stale when he was a champion,
00:00:43getting tired of the fact that every time he got in the ring, he had the bullseye painted on his chest.
00:00:48Now he says he is just as aggressive and as hungry as when he was a challenger.
00:00:54And also, quite frankly, he says he misses the big paydays.
00:00:56He wants to enjoy bigger paydays to support a championship lifestyle.
00:01:01Bones Adams, on the other hand, just a little thumbnail sketch.
00:01:04He's a young man who has known Kevin Kelly for the past several years.
00:01:08Likes him a lot.
00:01:09Considers himself very similar to Kevin Kelly, but just a southpaw.
00:01:12And if there's a label to be put on Bones Adams, he is a tough guy indeed.
00:01:18A young man who once, in his 36 fights, fought with his jaw broken in two places.
00:01:23That occurred in the third round, and he continued until the 11th round.
00:01:27Certainly, he knows how to handle pain.
00:01:29All right, we're going to take you back downstairs to set up this upcoming match between Kevin Kelly and Bones Adams.
00:01:35Once again, Jim Lampley.
00:01:37Thank you, JB.
00:01:40And now getting ready to enter the ring, as James pointed out, two pretty good friends.
00:01:44Bones Adams was 15 years old and an amateur star when he came out of southern Illinois
00:01:49and persuaded Madison Square Garden to sign him to a boxing contract.
00:01:54Lied about his age.
00:01:55Technically, he was supposed to be 16.
00:01:57He became a professional when he was only 15 years old.
00:02:01And at that time, he was introduced to one of the Garden's star rising attractions,
00:02:06a young man named Kevin Kelly.
00:02:08They became good friends, running mates by their own admission,
00:02:11and have promised each other that after this fight, they'll have dinner
00:02:15and forget that they ever had to meet each other in the ring.
00:02:19Why do I think they're not going to have dinner after this fight?
00:02:24This is going to be a tough, tough fight.
00:02:28Kevin Kelly may have a little bit too much Meldrick Taylor in him.
00:02:31He wants to fight you, not just box you.
00:02:34And this kid is a tough kid as well.
00:02:37His three losses all came in a row, Larry.
00:02:40An 11-round war with Orlando Canizales.
00:02:43And all this happened when Bones was still short of his 20th birthday.
00:02:47Then in each of the next two fights, he lost when he was bedeviled by a shoulder
00:02:52that was constantly separating.
00:02:54And he was popping the shoulder out in each of his losses.
00:02:58There's something here.
00:02:59There's some substance here.
00:03:01And he may be more than a good test for a Kevin Kelly who now raises doubts
00:03:08about how much he has left.
00:03:12And the odds reflect this.
00:03:15Kelly is not quite a two-to-one favorite,
00:03:20which is sort of odd when you consider that he has been a headliner for several years.
00:03:26Bones-Adams is a relatively unknown prize fighter.
00:03:32Fighters' records are brought to you tonight by The Ring, the Bible of Boxing.
00:03:37And there's Bones-Adams' record.
00:03:3931.
00:03:39I told you the three losses all came in a row.
00:03:41That was a couple years back.
00:03:43Two draws, 16 KOs.
00:03:45Why would anybody have put him in with Orlando Gonzalez when he was 19 years old?
00:03:50For money?
00:03:51That's what I'm wondering about.
00:03:53Not a good enough reason if you think you've got a real fighter on your hands.
00:03:57Maybe they thought they didn't.
00:04:01It's one of those question marks that will often be found on the record of a developing fighter.
00:04:07Bones looks over and says hello to us.
00:04:11Entirely personable young man.
00:04:13Kevin Kelly lost his featherweight championship January 7 of this year in San Antonio, Texas
00:04:19in a war with Alejandro Gonzalez that eventually ended to an 11th round Gonzalez TKO.
00:04:25Kelly and his trainer Phil Borgia believed that they were jobbed in the fight.
00:04:29They say that on these three occasions you're seeing, that was two,
00:04:33when Gonzalez rubbed his gloves against the sides of his trunks in round one.
00:04:37He was picking up a substance from the sequins on the side of the trunks,
00:04:40which he then was able to deliver into Kelly's eyes via the gloves.
00:04:44And in the 11th round when the fight was stopped,
00:04:47it was because of that inordinate swelling in both of Kelly's eyelids,
00:04:50which had effectively blinded him.
00:04:52Kelly believes that he was sabotaged by substance on Gonzalez's gloves that night.
00:04:58He and his trainer Phil Borgia say they went to the Texas State Boxing Commission
00:05:01and to the WBC for satisfaction and got none.
00:05:05We heard some preliminary stories about that immediately after that fight,
00:05:11but neither Kevin nor his trainer wanted to talk about it.
00:05:14They didn't want to make it seem they were alibying.
00:05:17A couple of hours after the fight, they told us they thought there was something suspicious
00:05:21that we had remarked curiously why they hadn't used an end swell on Kevin's eyes during the fight.
00:05:32And they said, well, the swelling was inside the lid and they couldn't get there
00:05:37and they didn't understand how that happened.
00:05:40So this is what their claim is now.
00:05:42But nevertheless, Kevin Kelly has been knocked down in most of his recent fights.
00:05:48If he's not a shot fighter, he's a wounded fighter.
00:05:53And we'll find out how much he has left tonight.
00:05:57Incidentally, I myself, Larry, was quite critical of Cutman Al Gavin that night
00:06:02for the absence of an end swell.
00:06:04Looking back and seeing that the swelling was down on the lids
00:06:08instead of above and around the eyes,
00:06:10I now understand Gavin's argument and position and why he did what he did.
00:06:18Once again, fighters' records are brought to you by The Ring, the Bible of Boxing.
00:06:22Kevin Kelly, 42 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw, 30 KOs.
00:06:26In the next fight, after the Alejandro Gonzalez loss, it was another war.
00:06:31He got hit a lot.
00:06:33He was behind and rallied to score a knockout to win that fight.
00:06:37But a lot of Kevin Kelly's close friends and associates believe he's getting hit too much.
00:06:41Well, as I suggested earlier, he has that Meldrick Taylor in him.
00:06:47He has great boxing skills, but he also has a warrior's heart.
00:06:53And sometimes that isn't to your best advantage.
00:06:56You see pictures of Kevin's four children on his robe.
00:07:00Dale of the tape for these two featherweights.
00:07:02Both weighing in at 126 pounds, 1 inch height advantage for Kelly, 3 inch reach advantage.
00:07:08Bones Adams is 7 years younger than his good buddy.
00:07:11Punched at numbers, Larry.
00:07:14And here you can see that both of these fighters are pretty active.
00:07:19Kelly is the more accurate fighter.
00:07:24Jabs, virtually identical.
00:07:28Rules of the bout with his Harold-ness.
00:07:30The Kevin Kelly Bones Adams fight is scheduled for 12 rounds.
00:07:34There is no standing eight count.
00:07:36No three knockdown rule.
00:07:37Only the referee can stop the fight.
00:07:39And you cannot be saved by the bell in any round, including the last round.
00:07:43Jim.
00:07:43All right.
00:07:44Thanks, Harold.
00:07:44Let's go up to the buffaroo.
00:07:48And now, ladies and gentlemen, here at Caesars Palace of Las Vegas,
00:07:51an evening of championship boxing continues with World Championship Boxing,
00:07:56brought to you by Top Rank Incorporated,
00:07:58along with your undisputed king of beers, Budweiser.
00:08:02This bout, again, is sanctioned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
00:08:05Nevada officials at ringside shall remain the same,
00:08:07along with the World Boxing Union.
00:08:09President John Robinson.
00:08:11Supervisor for the WBO will be Hector Gill.
00:08:15The three judges scoring this contest on a 10-point must system
00:08:18are Bill Graham, Art Lurie, and Clark Sammartino.
00:08:23And when the bell rings, the man in charge of the action,
00:08:25referee Mitch Halpern.
00:08:28And now, ladies and gentlemen, 12 rounds of boxing
00:08:30for the WBU, featherweight, championship of the world.
00:08:37Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner,
00:08:39wearing the black trim with gold letters
00:08:42and weighing in at 126 pounds.
00:08:45From Carmi, Illinois, he brings a record of 31 victories
00:08:48with only three defeats, two draws, 16 KOs to his credit.
00:08:53Ladies and gentlemen, he is Clarence Bones Adams.
00:09:02And his opponent across the ring,
00:09:04wearing the yellow trimmed and turquoise
00:09:06and weighing in at 126 pounds also.
00:09:10From Flushing, New York, an outstanding record of 42-1
00:09:14with one draw, 30 of his 42 victories by KO.
00:09:19Ladies and gentlemen, he is the former featherweight
00:09:22champion of the world, the Flushing Flash,
00:09:26Kevin Kelly.
00:09:27If Kevin Kelly thinks he's no longer a target
00:09:43because he isn't a champion, he's about to find out
00:09:46he's wrong.
00:09:47You're always a target in there.
00:09:50And a victory over Kelly would be a big deal
00:09:53for Bones Adams.
00:09:55Spectacular new outfits for the Kelly crew.
00:10:00Gold trimmed with green.
00:10:03Again honoring Kevin's four children.
00:10:06And he himself says, incidentally,
00:10:07I'm still fighting because I need money.
00:10:10There's no other reason to fight.
00:10:12He's a professional fighter.
00:10:13Referee Mitch Halperin brings them together
00:10:18and round one begins between
00:10:20a couple of fairly busy featherweights.
00:10:23Kevin Kelly normally the busier of the two.
00:10:26Southpaw against conventional fighter.
00:10:28What happens to their front feet, George?
00:10:30Well, there's going to be a lot of tangling up down there.
00:10:33Especially when you try a combination
00:10:34and the other guy is thinking the same thing.
00:10:36You're going to find feet to tangle up.
00:10:37The referee is going to have to do a lot of step back,
00:10:40break, and unlock.
00:10:41One thing you notice immediately
00:10:44is that Kelly presents a bigger picture.
00:10:47Bigger, stronger.
00:10:51One thing about this fight,
00:10:52Kelly has been defeated recently.
00:10:54So Adams is going to have a lot of confidence
00:10:57that he wouldn't have had two years ago.
00:11:03You're finding the softballs,
00:11:04you find yourself tapping their gloves
00:11:06more than hitting them.
00:11:07Everything is about touch your glove first.
00:11:11Bones Adams trying to get to the body
00:11:13with the right hand.
00:11:14Of course, the left hook to the body
00:11:16is always available against a southpaw,
00:11:19and Kelly's been bedeviled by left hooks
00:11:21to the body in his recent fights.
00:11:23Yeah.
00:11:25The southpaw is always going to expose
00:11:26the left side of his body.
00:11:28He should take advantage of it
00:11:29because he can't move it like he can his head.
00:11:31Bones Adams is not the kind of power puncher
00:11:35who can hurt you with one or two blows.
00:11:36He's going to have to put several punches together
00:11:38if he's going to get Kevin Kelly in trouble.
00:11:41Kelly lands a left across the top.
00:11:43The thing about Adams,
00:11:44hard right hand.
00:11:46Straight right hand.
00:11:47Counter right.
00:11:47The good thing about it,
00:11:50the funny thing about Adams,
00:11:51he doesn't seem to have a plan yet.
00:11:54He's just in there,
00:11:55look, fighting.
00:11:58He's like a guy
00:11:59who's touring the buffet line
00:12:00from front to back
00:12:01without putting anything on the plate.
00:12:02Yeah.
00:12:03You got to step up round one
00:12:04with one plan.
00:12:06By round three,
00:12:07have it in effect.
00:12:10So you're not one of these guys
00:12:12who goes for the,
00:12:12well,
00:12:13I'm just going to go out there
00:12:14in the first round
00:12:14and see what he's got theory.
00:12:16No, no.
00:12:16You got to go out there
00:12:17with a plan.
00:12:18If you don't have a plan,
00:12:19you're going to find yourself
00:12:19out there three rounds down
00:12:21to nothing.
00:12:28Kelly is trying to reestablish himself
00:12:30as the top fighter.
00:12:31Good left hook inside
00:12:32by Bones Adams.
00:12:35And a small red mouse
00:12:37begins to appear
00:12:38under Adams' left eye.
00:12:39Says he's never been knocked down.
00:12:44Although he was out
00:12:55on his feet
00:12:55the kind of solid fight.
00:13:04The strange thing about Kelly,
00:13:06he has a corner.
00:13:07I think they are too friendly.
00:13:08They play too much.
00:13:09It's time to fight.
00:13:10They don't have a listening program.
00:13:11There's a lot of uh-huh
00:13:14but no advice taken in.
00:13:19Sit down.
00:13:20Sit down.
00:13:20Sit down.
00:13:21Sit down.
00:13:21What's up?
00:13:21Shit.
00:13:22Give me the help.
00:13:23Give me the help.
00:13:23Right here.
00:13:24Because it's testing, okay?
00:13:25So we boxing real good.
00:13:26That's the way I want it.
00:13:26Please.
00:13:27We get the water in there.
00:13:28That's the way I want it.
00:13:30That's what I want.
00:13:32All right.
00:13:33You boxing good, baby.
00:13:34Real good.
00:13:36That's what I want.
00:13:36Keep stepping left.
00:13:37Drop that right hand.
00:13:38Right down the pipe, okay?
00:13:39I'm hitting my left hook.
00:13:40He comes to you and punches you.
00:13:42He's wide open.
00:13:43You got me?
00:13:44Three things.
00:13:44What did I say?
00:13:45I want the jab to work.
00:13:46All the time.
00:13:47All the time.
00:13:48What else?
00:13:49Secondly,
00:13:50when he punches me,
00:13:50I unload the head.
00:13:52And move the head.
00:13:53You got that?
00:13:54I'm moving the head on the side.
00:13:55Okay.
00:13:55But you're not coming back with the jab.
00:13:57Okay?
00:13:57You got a two-inch reach on this.
00:13:59I want to see it utilized.
00:14:01Okay?
00:14:02I know you're trying to remember me.
00:14:03Keep stepping left.
00:14:04Keep stepping left, all right?
00:14:06You're doing good.
00:14:10Although they were in the same promotional stable and knew each other well,
00:14:15they've never actually sparred with each other.
00:14:18Perhaps they both knew one day they'd have to do it for real.
00:14:21George, you ever fight somebody you regarded as a really good friend?
00:14:28Oh, all the guys I get into the ring with.
00:14:30I consider them good friends.
00:14:32They're business partners, George.
00:14:33Yes, business partners.
00:14:34Let's go out there.
00:14:35Let's make a big deal.
00:14:37Now, Kevin Kelly, when taking advice by his corner,
00:14:39I want to tell him to move his head.
00:14:41He instantly said,
00:14:41I've been doing my...
00:14:42That means just like a baby,
00:14:43when it pushes the bottle away,
00:14:45I don't want any more.
00:14:46Now, that's not a good sign.
00:14:47When you answer your trainer back,
00:14:50that means you don't want to hear what he has to say.
00:14:52Very intense and long-time relationship
00:14:54between Kelly and trainer Phil Borja.
00:14:56They've been together since Kelly was an amateur.
00:14:58Here we go. Here we go.
00:15:01Borja's a former kickboxing and martial arts guy.
00:15:04Actually still dabbles in that.
00:15:05Here we go.
00:15:06Here we go.
00:15:06Here we go.
00:15:07Here we go.
00:15:07Here we go.
00:15:08Here we go.
00:15:09Kelly gets in a left against the ropes.
00:15:11Bones Adams curiously inactive in this round, George.
00:15:15Bones Adams has been able to land some good power shots in the body
00:15:18and occasionally on the head, too,
00:15:21because Kevin Kelly's just following him around
00:15:2490% of the time not doing anything, just following him.
00:15:28He hasn't jabbed to the side,
00:15:30hit him on the shoulder or nothing,
00:15:31just following me around.
00:15:33And if you're not going to hit me,
00:15:34I'm going to hit you.
00:15:34And this is what Adam is saying.
00:15:35On the other hand,
00:15:39according to our punch stat loggers,
00:15:40Bones threw 22 jabs in round one,
00:15:42and all of them landed on Kelly's gloves.
00:15:46I wonder if they count.
00:15:48Well, as you said earlier,
00:15:50it's the constant occurrence against a southpaw.
00:15:53You throw that jab out there
00:15:54and knock it right into the glove.
00:15:55Right.
00:15:58That's what you've got to do.
00:15:59You've got to set yourself.
00:16:00I'm not going to throw this jab
00:16:01unless I intend to land with a southpaw.
00:16:04You can do a lot more landing than you think.
00:16:06Adam's going to the right-hand lead.
00:16:08Time-honored tactic against the southpaw.
00:16:23Adam has his right hand set right underneath his chin.
00:16:25That's where Adam...
00:16:27Kevin Kelly wants to throw,
00:16:29and because it's there,
00:16:30Kevin Kelly will not throw straight left.
00:16:34Clarence Bones Adams stepping in
00:16:42for another hard right hand to the body,
00:16:44partially blocked by Kelly's elbow.
00:16:46Kevin Kelly not very busy in round two,
00:16:48but starting to get his hands on Adams now.
00:16:51This corner told him,
00:16:52as soon as he hits you,
00:16:53get him back with two or three shots.
00:16:56He's being hit by Adams,
00:16:57but he's not doing anything afterwards.
00:16:58More on the left hand.
00:17:02Kelly landed.
00:17:04Best blow of the fight so far.
00:17:06Adams kind of stepping into it there.
00:17:11Adams coming back with power shots.
00:17:13That's what's worked for him so far.
00:17:14Waiting in the wings on the right,
00:17:22Oscar De La Hoya.
00:17:23On the left,
00:17:24Gennaro Hernandez.
00:17:25Garfield High School,
00:17:26East Los Angeles.
00:17:27On the right,
00:17:28Roosevelt High School,
00:17:29East Los Angeles.
00:17:30On the left.
00:17:34The Golden Boy
00:17:35against Chicanito.
00:17:37Chicanito translates as
00:17:39Little Chicano,
00:17:41Little Mexican American.
00:17:46And both fighters looking
00:17:47exceptionally relaxed
00:17:49as they get ready
00:17:50for this evening's work.
00:17:52If anybody exhibits
00:17:53nervous energy there,
00:17:54it would be De La Hoya.
00:17:55Everything comes off what?
00:17:57To his legs.
00:17:58Everything comes off what?
00:17:59What's that?
00:17:59Okay.
00:18:00You're concerned about the heat on the...
00:18:01You're concerned about the heat on the...
00:18:03It was an interesting question
00:18:11that trainer Phil Borgia
00:18:13asked him
00:18:13because what he was saying was
00:18:15what are you doing out there?
00:18:17When are you going to start
00:18:18making something happen?
00:18:20I think he wants to know
00:18:21why Kelly's only thrown
00:18:2266 punches
00:18:23through two rounds, Larry.
00:18:25That's a very low work rate.
00:18:27And it leads you to wonder
00:18:28whether Kevin
00:18:29is getting a little gun shy
00:18:30after all the punishment
00:18:31he's taken
00:18:32in his last three bouts.
00:18:34He's definitely the trainer.
00:18:35The trainer hasn't even
00:18:36told him what to do.
00:18:37He said wait until he hit you
00:18:38and hit him back.
00:18:39So what do you do?
00:18:40You wait around.
00:18:41He's told him to keep his left out...
00:18:43his jab out there.
00:18:45And Kelly has thrown his jab
00:18:46but tentatively...
00:18:47tentatively.
00:18:53Adams has been the busier fighter
00:18:55in the first two rounds.
00:18:56The hole in his game
00:18:59is that he hasn't been able
00:19:00to land the jab
00:19:01but he's throwing more
00:19:02and landing power shots
00:19:03at a higher rate
00:19:04than Kevin Kelly.
00:19:06Basically Adams
00:19:07seems to be waiting
00:19:08for Kelly to make a mistake
00:19:09and to counter him.
00:19:11Now once he loads him to sleep
00:19:14he goes and throws
00:19:15three good power shots
00:19:16and never get hits back.
00:19:18Never get hit back.
00:19:20Adam.
00:19:21Yep.
00:19:22So you like the way
00:19:23Bones is going about this,
00:19:24huh George?
00:19:25Oh yeah.
00:19:25He landed three shots
00:19:27and he didn't get hit back.
00:19:29Now they trade
00:19:30in the center of the ring.
00:19:35Adam has to be careful
00:19:36when you're out there
00:19:37with judges
00:19:37and they're watching
00:19:38another guy being the aggressor.
00:19:39Sometimes they overlook
00:19:40that you're not...
00:19:42that you're landing a good shot
00:19:43because you're backing away
00:19:44all the time.
00:19:50Well Adams may be backing away
00:19:52but he's still throwing
00:19:53more punches
00:19:54than Kevin Kelly.
00:19:55Who is curiously lethargic
00:19:57through two and a half rounds.
00:19:59As he continues
00:20:00on the comeback trail
00:20:00after his 11th round TKO loss
00:20:03in January of this year
00:20:04to Alejandro Gonzalez.
00:20:07So Kelly's corner
00:20:08should tell him
00:20:09get out there
00:20:09throw some shots.
00:20:10Stop trying to be so accurate.
00:20:11Get out there
00:20:12and get ahead of the fight.
00:20:13Make sure you're hit on point.
00:20:15I think George
00:20:16that's what the trainer
00:20:17was suggesting.
00:20:19Maybe he should be
00:20:20more direct about it
00:20:21but when he said
00:20:22are you a little warm out there?
00:20:24the way you're bothering him.
00:20:26That's exactly what he meant.
00:20:28Yeah but he's trying to show
00:20:29throw good accurate shots
00:20:30and he's not going to get that.
00:20:31This guy's tight.
00:20:32His defense is right up
00:20:33where it should be.
00:20:40Mutual respect
00:20:41at an all-time high
00:20:42as good friends
00:20:43Kevin Kelly
00:20:44and Bones Adams
00:20:45go at it
00:20:46for business.
00:20:47Kelly was able to miss
00:20:48because each punch
00:20:49he threw
00:20:50was power punches.
00:20:54The old saying
00:20:55is lighten up Kelly
00:20:56get out there
00:20:57and get ahead on point.
00:20:58left hand lands
00:21:04for Kelly
00:21:04Adams misses
00:21:06with a right and a left.
00:21:12Adams still not able
00:21:13to jab effectively
00:21:14so he continues
00:21:15to go to power punches.
00:21:16He's enjoying yourself
00:21:17and you're pissing me off.
00:21:19Sit down.
00:21:19Get off them ropes.
00:21:20Get off them ropes.
00:21:21Come on.
00:21:21Stop enjoying yourself.
00:21:23What do you think?
00:21:23You pretty out there?
00:21:24Yo, let's get this business
00:21:25taken care of.
00:21:27Me not.
00:21:27I got you.
00:21:28How's that for you?
00:21:30Feel good.
00:21:30I like what you're doing.
00:21:31But I don't like
00:21:32what you're doing
00:21:33when you just kind of
00:21:33make a miss
00:21:34and don't make a play.
00:21:36What's the whole technique
00:21:37we've been working on?
00:21:37Make a miss.
00:21:38When you make a miss
00:21:39like that
00:21:39where's my comebacks?
00:21:41Where's my comebacks?
00:21:42Cheer up to me right now.
00:21:44You focused on me?
00:21:44I'm focused right on you.
00:21:45Now you're going to show me
00:21:46all the information
00:21:47that you're giving.
00:21:47Beautiful.
00:21:48Now you're going to show me
00:21:48this round
00:21:49that you're going to
00:21:50get him right in here.
00:21:51You're going to come
00:21:52with a hook.
00:21:52Sometimes.
00:21:53Look at me.
00:21:53Look at me.
00:21:54You're doing fine.
00:21:55You're doing fine.
00:21:57But I can do it for that, okay?
00:21:58But you can't call with shit
00:21:59that we shouldn't even
00:21:59be getting called with, okay?
00:22:01On this stage, all right?
00:22:03There's five.
00:22:04We can hurt you, man.
00:22:04We'll take the man out of here, okay?
00:22:07Second door, please.
00:22:08Yo, yo.
00:22:10Now I'll let you have
00:22:11to watch that.
00:22:11I'll let you go.
00:22:15Round four of a scheduled 12.
00:22:23Kevin Kelly with another
00:22:24curiously inactive round
00:22:25in round three,
00:22:26only through 38 punches.
00:22:28This is a guy
00:22:28who has, in many of his fights,
00:22:30averaged upwards of 70 punches
00:22:32per round.
00:22:33Kendall was able to land
00:22:45a good straight left
00:22:46that time.
00:22:52What's that old saying?
00:22:54Has anyone seen Kelly?
00:22:55Not much.
00:23:03So far, he's been
00:23:04the flushing flush.
00:23:07You got to throw
00:23:07a lot of punches.
00:23:09When you're fighting
00:23:09in the light of class,
00:23:10you got to throw
00:23:11a lot of shots.
00:23:11You're not going to hit
00:23:12a guy with one punch
00:23:13every now and then.
00:23:14They're just too quick.
00:23:14Adams is clever.
00:23:20Give him that.
00:23:20He's not an easy target.
00:23:24When Kelly comes at him,
00:23:25he's moving backwards.
00:23:27When Kelly isn't doing anything,
00:23:28he's taking some shots.
00:23:30He has a good intuition
00:23:31about when to be there
00:23:33and when not to be there.
00:23:34So he's a difficult fighter
00:23:35to fight,
00:23:37but Kelly's job
00:23:38is to find out
00:23:39how to fight him
00:23:39and to fight him.
00:23:41Now, one thing I like
00:23:41about Adams,
00:23:42he throws that straight
00:23:43right hand.
00:23:43He takes it right
00:23:44back to his chin.
00:23:46There's a hard right hand
00:23:47landed by Adams.
00:23:48He tries to follow up
00:23:49to do some more damage.
00:23:50Kevin Kelly gets
00:23:51a shot at it himself.
00:23:55Adams broke his veil
00:23:58of caution there
00:23:59for a moment
00:23:59to try to open up
00:24:00against Kelly
00:24:01and Kelly took advantage
00:24:02of the chance
00:24:02to land one inside.
00:24:04Now, Kelly had a fight
00:24:05not too long ago
00:24:06where he was swollen up
00:24:07and once you start swelling,
00:24:08it starts happening
00:24:09all the time.
00:24:10So you've got to be careful
00:24:10not to get hit,
00:24:11especially when you're
00:24:12in the lighter ways
00:24:13because you're going to
00:24:14have a lot of action
00:24:15in there,
00:24:15a lot of punches
00:24:16near and under the eye.
00:24:22And Kelly's left eye
00:24:24is getting in trouble already.
00:24:27I think Adams' left eye
00:24:28doesn't exactly look perfect,
00:24:30but neither man
00:24:33is landing at such
00:24:34a high rate
00:24:35that he's going to endanger
00:24:37the other one
00:24:37with a blowout so far.
00:24:48Wild missed by Adams.
00:24:49He got himself back
00:24:50into position in a hurry.
00:24:51Well-schooled fighter.
00:24:53Won a lot of
00:24:54national junior championships
00:24:55before his 12th birthday.
00:24:57This kid was boxing
00:24:58when he was 6, 7,
00:24:598 years old, George.
00:25:01Listen, for the first time,
00:25:02Kelly was able to deliver
00:25:03three good shots.
00:25:04They went hard,
00:25:05but he delivered.
00:25:06If he can keep that in mind
00:25:07and keep that going
00:25:08over and over and over.
00:25:15War of nerves continues
00:25:16through four rounds
00:25:17between good friends,
00:25:19Clarence Bones-Adams
00:25:20and Kevin the Flushing Flash.
00:25:22Kelly, let's go up
00:25:23to host James Brown.
00:25:24J.B.?
00:25:24All right, Jim,
00:25:25thank you very much
00:25:26and co-tailing on the point
00:25:27that you made about
00:25:27the upcoming featured event
00:25:29tonight between
00:25:29De La Hoya and Hernandez
00:25:30called The Rivals
00:25:32for good reason indeed.
00:25:33One of which,
00:25:34these two fighters
00:25:35went to rival high schools
00:25:36in East Los Angeles.
00:25:38Oscar De La Hoya
00:25:38this past Tuesday
00:25:39on the receiving end
00:25:41of a pep rally
00:25:41by the students
00:25:42at Garfield High School.
00:25:44Looking very intense
00:25:45and focused indeed.
00:25:46And of course,
00:25:47on the same day,
00:25:48Gennaro Hernandez
00:25:49of Theodore Roosevelt
00:25:51High School
00:25:51on the edge
00:25:52of East Los Angeles
00:25:53on the receiving end
00:25:55of cheers
00:25:55from folks
00:25:56from his high school,
00:25:57Roosevelt.
00:25:58And Gennaro Hernandez
00:26:00quite happy
00:26:01to be selling
00:26:02this score in the ring
00:26:03as they're flanking
00:26:03their promoter,
00:26:04Bob Aaron.
00:26:05And of course,
00:26:06the heat will be decided
00:26:07tonight in the ring
00:26:08as it should be.
00:26:09Back downstairs
00:26:09to Jim Lampley.
00:26:13Thank you very much,
00:26:15James.
00:26:15De La Hoya
00:26:16versus Gennaro Hernandez.
00:26:19May well be the next
00:26:20attraction in the ring.
00:26:22We have a little
00:26:22wild card attraction
00:26:23for you
00:26:23that we haven't
00:26:24even told you about yet.
00:26:25You'll get a chance
00:26:26to see that
00:26:27a little bit later on.
00:26:28But first,
00:26:29let's check in
00:26:29with Harold Letterman
00:26:30to find out
00:26:31how he has scored
00:26:32Adams Kelly so far.
00:26:33Harold,
00:26:34what you got?
00:26:34Jim,
00:26:35in this sort of
00:26:35no-fight fight,
00:26:36I got a 39-37,
00:26:38three rounds to one
00:26:39Kevin Kelly.
00:26:40Manuel Diaz
00:26:41is doing a good job
00:26:42keeping a swelling
00:26:42down on the left eye
00:26:43of Bones Adams.
00:26:44What I can't stand
00:26:45about this fight
00:26:45is these guys
00:26:46just won't put
00:26:46two punches together.
00:26:48Each one lands
00:26:48one shot
00:26:49and that's it.
00:26:50But at least
00:26:50Kevin's coming forward
00:26:51showing real good defense,
00:26:52picking off
00:26:53a lot of Bones' shots
00:26:54and landing clean shots.
00:26:56I have it
00:26:57two rounds for Kelly,
00:26:58one for Adams
00:27:00and one even.
00:27:01I certainly
00:27:02wouldn't argue
00:27:02with that, Larry.
00:27:04I'll say this,
00:27:04gentlemen.
00:27:05Scoring aside,
00:27:06when you watch
00:27:07a featherweight fight
00:27:08in which the two
00:27:10fighters combine
00:27:11to land 16 punches
00:27:12in the fourth round,
00:27:13you're watching
00:27:14a bad fight.
00:27:15now action begins
00:27:18to heat up
00:27:19just a little bit
00:27:20as I heap scorn
00:27:22on the fighters.
00:27:25Kelly chasing Adams
00:27:26into the corner.
00:27:28Bones coming back
00:27:29with a left hook.
00:27:29You think a skirmish
00:27:44will ever break out here,
00:27:45George?
00:27:45I don't think so.
00:27:46they've sparred together
00:27:47in the past,
00:27:48kind of know one another
00:27:49a little bit.
00:27:49Now Adams was able
00:27:50to get a good right hand
00:27:51in there.
00:27:55Kelly has made himself
00:27:56a counter punch
00:27:57and he's just not
00:27:58going to do anything
00:27:58but wait until,
00:28:00like a buzzer,
00:28:01wait until something dies.
00:28:03Just not going to lead.
00:28:05Crowd can't decide
00:28:06whether it wants
00:28:07to chant Adams
00:28:08or Bones.
00:28:09Bones!
00:28:09Now Adams taking over
00:28:24to being an aggressor now.
00:28:32I think that's
00:28:33to Kelly's advantage.
00:28:34He fights better
00:28:35when someone is on him.
00:28:37Yeah, he likes
00:28:38to fight back.
00:28:40That's the best
00:28:40of Kevin Kelly
00:28:41when his warrior's heart
00:28:42makes him step up
00:28:44his punch output
00:28:44and jacks his energy
00:28:46way up.
00:28:47But sometimes
00:28:48you've got to hurt him
00:28:49to bring that out in it.
00:28:50He's been knocked down
00:28:51in each of his last
00:28:51three fights,
00:28:52full fights.
00:29:07Good left-right combination
00:29:09by Adams.
00:29:09And a hard right hand
00:29:11to the body
00:29:11to follow by
00:29:12Clarence Bones Adams
00:29:13enjoying one of his
00:29:15best minutes of the fight
00:29:16as round five
00:29:17comes to a close.
00:29:20That's what I need
00:29:22right there, okay?
00:29:23That's the kind of action
00:29:24I need.
00:29:25We've got to keep
00:29:25stepping on the man.
00:29:26We've got to keep
00:29:26stepping on the left,
00:29:27okay?
00:29:27And shooting the right hand.
00:29:28When you shoot the right hand,
00:29:29you're catching the man,
00:29:29okay?
00:29:30You've got to let it go.
00:29:31You've got to be generous
00:29:31with that right hand, okay?
00:29:33Just let the right hand go
00:29:33and come back
00:29:34with your left hook
00:29:34and get you right back
00:29:35in position, okay?
00:29:36Give me some cold water.
00:29:37Give me one.
00:29:38Cold water.
00:29:40All right,
00:29:42keep stepping on the left.
00:29:43But when you make him miss,
00:29:45especially when he taps you
00:29:46to the body,
00:29:47where's the 3, 4, 5, 6?
00:29:49Let me see the other.
00:29:49I'm loading, Kevin.
00:29:50Stay still.
00:29:51I've got to stop loading.
00:29:52Okay.
00:29:53What's got to work?
00:29:54What's got to work?
00:29:55Okay?
00:29:56You know these things.
00:29:57We've worked on these things
00:29:58and then you go out
00:29:59and you do something
00:29:59totally different.
00:30:01I don't want gray hairs.
00:30:03I want to win here, okay?
00:30:05And some of these rounds
00:30:05that are close,
00:30:06who knows which way
00:30:07they're going.
00:30:07You got that?
00:30:09You got that?
00:30:10Don't be careless.
00:30:11We'll kick it off.
00:30:11Kevin Kelly says
00:30:14he fights on emotion.
00:30:17His trainer wants him to fight
00:30:19with his intellect
00:30:21and his fists.
00:30:27It's been an ongoing battle
00:30:28between them.
00:30:38Adams been able to land
00:30:40two good left jabs there.
00:30:41which he hadn't been able
00:30:42to do early on.
00:30:43He was tapping Kelly's gloves
00:30:44but now good left jab
00:30:46is starting to touch Kelly's face.
00:30:47Because Kelly's dropping
00:30:48the right hand, George.
00:30:49But at first,
00:30:50only early on,
00:30:51he was putting his right hand up
00:30:52as soon as he jabs.
00:30:54Now he's not doing it.
00:30:55He's dropping it
00:30:56just like you said
00:30:57with a rhythm to it.
00:30:58When he fights harder,
00:30:58when he gets more active,
00:31:00he's got a habit
00:31:01of dropping the right hand.
00:31:02He's doing it over and over.
00:31:03He's been susceptible
00:31:04to left hooks
00:31:04against good fighters.
00:31:10Now Bones Adams
00:31:11is going to try
00:31:11to get over the top
00:31:12of the left hook
00:31:13and Kevin Kelly's
00:31:13going to try to
00:31:14nip that in the bud
00:31:16by taking the aggression away.
00:31:18It seems that every time
00:31:22that Kelly has Adams
00:31:24backed up in the corner,
00:31:25he backs off.
00:31:26That's right.
00:31:27He's been stopped recently.
00:31:29He just doesn't want
00:31:29to extend himself
00:31:30and then need that energy
00:31:31in the last few rounds again.
00:31:32That's what it is.
00:31:33Right to the body
00:31:34by Adams.
00:31:35Good counter right
00:31:35to the face
00:31:36by Kevin Kelly.
00:31:37That is true.
00:31:38Backs him up
00:31:38and lets him alone.
00:31:42Activity level
00:31:43stepping up
00:31:43just a little bit
00:31:44in the first minute
00:31:44of round six.
00:31:48Right hand lead
00:31:52again by Bones Adams.
00:31:54Kelly firing twice
00:31:55with the right in return.
00:31:58Still cautious though.
00:31:59Kevin not really
00:32:00stepping forward
00:32:01and committing to the jab.
00:32:03He gets his legs bent
00:32:05when he tries to land
00:32:05the left hand
00:32:06but he's very straight legs
00:32:08when he sticks
00:32:08that right jab out there.
00:32:10Now Adams has stopped
00:32:11using his jab.
00:32:12Which is a little weird
00:32:18since Kelly's still
00:32:19dropping the right hand.
00:32:21Adams misses
00:32:21over the top
00:32:22of the right
00:32:22and then flails away
00:32:24with the left
00:32:24of the body
00:32:25that was blocked
00:32:25by Kelly's arm.
00:32:28Adams has told him
00:32:28I want to counter
00:32:29your right hand now.
00:32:31Now Kelly's aware
00:32:32of that.
00:32:32He's going to be
00:32:33extra cautious.
00:32:38Easier night
00:32:39for referee
00:32:40Mitch Halperin
00:32:40than when last
00:32:41we saw him
00:32:42in this ring.
00:32:44One of the key figures
00:32:45in the tragic circumstances
00:32:46that unfolded
00:32:47surrounding Jimmy Garcia
00:32:48in his battle
00:32:49with Gabriel
00:32:49back on May 6th here.
00:32:51Rellis was supposed
00:33:03to fight on his car
00:33:04tonight
00:33:05but he's not yet ready
00:33:06to come back
00:33:07after that
00:33:08terrible incident.
00:33:09Gabe
00:33:10take all the time
00:33:11you need.
00:33:13Kevin Kelly
00:33:13has landed
00:33:14two jabs
00:33:15for the first time
00:33:16in one round.
00:33:20Crowd begins
00:33:21to boo
00:33:21after six
00:33:22desultory rounds
00:33:24in this one.
00:33:24TVKO returns
00:33:25November 4th
00:33:26with the heavyweight
00:33:27fight of the year.
00:33:28Riddick Bowe

00:33:30In their 1992 battle
00:33:32Bowe came away
00:33:33with the title.
00:33:34One year later
00:33:34Holyfield regained it
00:33:36by the narrowest
00:33:36of margins.
00:33:37As we know by now
00:33:38when these two meet
00:33:39anything can happen
00:33:41so contact your
00:33:42cable operator
00:33:42to order this
00:33:43special event.
00:33:44Live from Caesars Palace
00:33:45Saturday November 4th
00:33:46on TVKO
00:33:47Bowe Holyfield 3.
00:33:49Right here.
00:33:53Do not get careless.
00:33:55Double and triple
00:33:55up on a jab
00:33:56then move ahead
00:33:57and come back
00:33:58with what?
00:33:58Nothing.
00:33:59Come on god damn it.
00:34:00You make a missing
00:34:00and you're happy
00:34:01to be over here?
00:34:02No.
00:34:02True.
00:34:03True.
00:34:03Enjoy my work.
00:34:04I told you that.
00:34:05Good right hand
00:34:06by Kelly
00:34:07the most effective
00:34:08punch of that round
00:34:09but
00:34:09it was another
00:34:11non-round.
00:34:13It's interesting
00:34:14that the trainer
00:34:15in that occasion
00:34:16said don't get careless
00:34:17so he's sending
00:34:18mixed messages
00:34:20I mean he's fighting
00:34:22a fighter who doesn't
00:34:23appear
00:34:23can hurt him
00:34:24at all
00:34:25he's got to take
00:34:27some chances
00:34:27in here.
00:34:31Together they landed
00:34:3221 punches
00:34:33in round 6
00:34:34and again
00:34:35Kevin Kelly
00:34:36simply not working
00:34:37enough in there
00:34:38he only threw
00:34:3929 punches
00:34:40in the 6th round.
00:34:41Sometimes if you can't
00:34:46jab to the head
00:34:47go to the chest
00:34:48Kelly hasn't even
00:34:49sent a jab down
00:34:49to the chest yet
00:34:50good jab
00:34:51this time.
00:34:55Well we often see
00:34:56conventional fighters
00:34:57hesitant against
00:34:58southpaws George
00:34:59because of the
00:35:00difference in the look
00:35:00but there's no reason
00:35:01that Kevin Kelly
00:35:02should be hesitant
00:35:03against a straight up
00:35:04conventional fighter
00:35:05like Bones Adams.
00:35:06He's a little too
00:35:07cautious.
00:35:07he's fighting
00:35:09tonight to
00:35:10reestablish himself
00:35:10as the best fighter
00:35:11in his weight division.
00:35:14No he's not George.
00:35:17Maybe he wants
00:35:18to do that
00:35:18but he isn't
00:35:19fighting like that.
00:35:20No he's not
00:35:21doing it
00:35:21so things should
00:35:22start to happen
00:35:23otherwise he's
00:35:24going to leave
00:35:24a bad taste
00:35:25on Adams.
00:35:31Maybe he's
00:35:32entitled to
00:35:32to take a night
00:35:34off while he's
00:35:35working.
00:35:36He's had some
00:35:36really rough
00:35:37tough fights.
00:35:41He says he wants
00:35:42a rematch
00:35:42with Alejandro
00:35:43Gonzalez
00:35:43and logic tells
00:35:44you he'd have
00:35:45to fight better
00:35:46than this
00:35:46to have a chance
00:35:47in that one
00:35:48if it were
00:35:49to come about.
00:35:51This Adams
00:35:52has some
00:35:53deceptive power
00:35:53here.
00:35:54He'll crush you
00:35:54a little bit
00:35:55when you're
00:35:56thinking of chasing
00:35:57him he'll hurt
00:35:58you a little bit
00:35:58not enough
00:35:58to knock you
00:35:59down but
00:36:00make you stop
00:36:00and think
00:36:01hey maybe I
00:36:02should back up
00:36:03a bit.
00:36:03Yeah but I
00:36:04sense he's
00:36:04starting to push
00:36:05his punches
00:36:05just a little bit
00:36:06George
00:36:07there's no doubt
00:36:08about it
00:36:08Kevin Kelly
00:36:09could have
00:36:09and should
00:36:10have taken
00:36:10over earlier.
00:36:11Hard left
00:36:12to the body
00:36:13by Bones
00:36:13Adams.
00:36:15George it
00:36:15looks to me
00:36:16as if Adams
00:36:18if he stepped
00:36:18on a blade
00:36:19of grass
00:36:19the grass
00:36:20wouldn't go down
00:36:21I don't think
00:36:21he's got any
00:36:22power at all.
00:36:23Throwing
00:36:23arm punches
00:36:24makes you wonder
00:36:25why Kelly
00:36:26Kelly is so
00:36:26cautious.
00:36:32Left hand
00:36:32landed for
00:36:33Kelly
00:36:33Adams wobbles
00:36:34slightly
00:36:35Kevin comes
00:36:36in with one
00:36:36punch
00:36:37and then
00:36:37another
00:36:38but no
00:36:39combinations
00:36:39here.
00:36:41Larry said
00:36:42earlier Kelly
00:36:43gets him into
00:36:43the corner
00:36:44that's it
00:36:45I don't want
00:36:45anything else
00:36:46no chance to
00:36:47finish if you
00:36:47don't throw
00:36:48in bunches
00:36:49he doesn't
00:36:49want to do
00:36:49anything
00:36:50the idea
00:36:50is to back
00:36:51him up
00:36:51and beat
00:36:52him up
00:36:52he backs
00:36:52him up
00:36:53and then
00:36:53backs off
00:36:54I will
00:36:58have him
00:36:59whenever I
00:36:59needed a
00:36:59rest
00:37:00I just
00:37:00go to
00:37:00the corner
00:37:01go to
00:37:03the ropes
00:37:03wonder if
00:37:06Charlie
00:37:07Finley's
00:37:07watching
00:37:07if he
00:37:08likes
00:37:09Kevin
00:37:09Kelly's
00:37:09trunks
00:37:10I knew
00:37:11I'd
00:37:12seen that

00:38:25here soon
00:38:26what around
00:38:27the seventh

00:38:41Bones
00:38:41Adams
00:38:41we expect
00:38:42much
00:38:43better

00:41:48it's okay by Clarence look at me let's see if there was a headbutt there the
00:41:58headbutt might have contributed to that eye closing but we know it wasn't any
00:42:02chili peppers on his trunks
00:42:03that is a shiner George a real black eye once a guy gets his eyes swollen up he gotta just start
00:42:24fighting fighting for a title you're getting out there this is time to get on
00:42:31though to market yourself you got to let it all hang out Adams is not doing that he's real too
00:42:37reluctant between them they landed 14 punches and one fairly solid headbutt in round number
00:42:45eight so the pace of the fight has yet to pick up friendship looks better and better Adams corner
00:43:00should tell him look if you're gonna lose get knocked out but get out there and win this fight
00:43:03stop this bounce once throw two a bounce twice and throw one
00:43:09now he's starting to mix it up bones Adams was able to get into the body with a right hand shot and then
00:43:22he sort of scraped the right across the front of Kelly's forehead and now Kelly lands a hard right
00:43:28hand to the eye and that knocks Adams back into the ropes and the crowd comes alive just a little bit
00:43:34with anticipation that the fight might end Kevin ought to just double and triple up on the jab George how is bones gonna stop him he can't see Kevin Kelly
00:43:47there's no other word but to say he's scared guy gets against the rope he said I'm not gonna get hit in an exchange or he's trying to save it for 10th 11 round I don't know what it is
00:43:58he definitely backs off once Adam gets on the rope well he got hit hard against Gonzalez in January good combination by Adam that time
00:44:10extremely tough war against Gregoria Vargas back in December of 93 another war with Ricardo Rivera in March of this year
00:44:19Kevin Kelly was behind and salvaged that with a ninth round KO but took a ton of punishment in that one too
00:44:27you're out there in front of the people you gotta make them believe in you hey he hasn't got a knockout
00:44:34he may get it any minute now they'll come back next time and watch it Kevin Kelly's always been such an
00:44:42entertaining fighter throughout his career good right hook by Kevin Kelly he's one of his better punches of the
00:44:48fight well that's another thing he can hook into that eye and logic tells you Adams
00:44:57is going to have a tough time blocking it they say the punch that always hurts you most is the one
00:45:03you don't see coming and there should be a sizable number of punches that Bones Adams wouldn't see
00:45:08coming now George I think Kevin Kelly not only this fight is going around around he's trying to get work
00:45:13on his confidence
00:45:14come on come on come on come on come on come on come on still to come the main event Oscar de la Hoya against
00:45:34Gennaro Hernandez championship fight at 135 pounds between two unbeaten fighters from East Los Angeles
00:45:42some people said they should have fought right after de la Hoya left the Olympics in 92 some said Oscar will
00:45:50dodge Gennaro Hernandez he'll never take that fight but now it's here and all of LA waits and watches
00:45:57he's been examined by the damn mission doctor goes okay okay my feet this is it you got doing
00:46:08for flip Romanski has given him permission to go on the ubiquitous flip Romanski let's go on I think
00:46:15that actually Bones can't see through the eye it's just a very bad looking eye and Kelly hasn't been able
00:46:23to do anything more with it so not only the doctors are watching the eye but they also watching the
00:46:30fight too it's not like something terrible is getting ready to happen I haven't been any big train wrecks
00:46:35in here you see these guys they get around the box but they come into a town they don't make friends
00:46:44don't even make enemies you don't have that go get them go get them Kelly there's no one behind them
00:46:50that would make them fight gotta make friends in the cities that you're gonna find them visit the
00:46:55schools the hospital
00:46:56most active exchange of the fight so far as Bones Adams perhaps feeling a sense of desperation begins
00:47:07to open up just a little bit yeah and if he does he can make some friends here tonight
00:47:11good hard left hand by Kelly landed
00:47:18blood on Kevin Kelly shoulders perhaps trickling from the right eye of Bones Adams
00:47:33Kevin Kelly is fighting good he's just fighting like a heavyweight or something
00:47:39I'll hit you every now and then power sits back and watch to see the damage he's done
00:47:46good headbutt another headbutt maybe he was trying for his other eye
00:48:00thing about those headbutts they'll leave you dizzy temporarily so you see guys moving around
00:48:11it's not because they want to it's just that hey I don't see anything yet so you wait a while until you
00:48:16get your vision back
00:48:23gotta do a lot of bluffing once you've been butted good you know we've been on Kelly's case and with good
00:48:27reason but Adams has to do something here because he knows he's behind well it's starting to happen a
00:48:32little bit round 10 has been the most entertaining of the second half of the fight by a wide margin
00:48:38as Adams begins to open up a little bit but he'll need more than this
00:48:45Kelly now tactically managing his way toward a likely points victory in a fight which will be unmemorable at best
00:48:56Kelly landed a straight left to the body this time that was the first good body shot I've seen him throw
00:49:02a backhand by Adams tribute to Steffi Grom for her victory at the US Open today

00:50:13Kelly has won the fight
00:50:15everyone in Adams corner is
00:50:17is urging him
00:50:19to take some dramatic moves
00:50:21let's see if he can
00:50:22let's see if he can
00:50:24Harold after 10 rounds
00:50:26Larry I've got it 98-92
00:50:30eight rounds to two
00:50:31Kevin Kelly
00:50:32tell me something
00:50:33the Nevada rule is that the you know in between rounds it's one minute
00:50:36and I tell you the California rule is much better in California if the doctor comes in they call time out they let the doctor look look at the guy and then they call time in I mean in
00:50:46Bones Adams's corner they're only giving Manuel Diaz something like 10 seconds to work on that swollen eye because Romanski's taken all the time in that one minute to look at the eye and then Manuel Diaz can't use ice on it said I really should quote time when a doctor comes in just as they do in California
00:51:01congratulations to the California commission
00:51:03point well taken Harold letterman round 11 eliciting booze from the spectators at ringside there's an old rule of thumb for the professional fighter George Foreman any victory is good enough will victory alone in this kind of performance be good enough for Kevin Kelly no not at all this guy is a headliner supposed to represent marketability you just don't go out there and winning a fight like that you go out there and you show the world that I am back
00:51:30then he could be having a good time I mean easy difficult time because of Adam style also but just got to make up you got to put some excitement in there when the key decision makers in the world of boxing the promoters the site operators the television network guys are seated at ringside you've got to be at your best you've got to be at your best once again we're on Kelly's case and with good reason but this guy has given us a tremendous number of exciting fights and I don't want to condemn him for one bad fight
00:52:00to fight in New York underneath a De La Hoya main event if indeed De La Hoya wins here tonight and we'll see what happens then but I love a bad fight it's just that he's not fighting like what you expect of Kelly agreed fighting like a good heavyweight but Larry Merchant's caveat is don't count him out yet no he's not out by a long shot you know with the right opponent the guy who comes to fight him then we'll find out Adams has been a cutie
00:52:30too many chances knows Kelly well they don't match up well so that is that isn't an excuse for a bad fight but I'm not going to discount him on the basis of one fight well and and this fight between two good friends has been in some ways an illustration of why you pay a larger ticket price for fights between mortal enemies
00:53:00one round to go after this one round to go after this one round 11 more of the same of what you saw in the first 10
00:53:15Clarence
00:53:42Up. He's got good news.
00:53:46Hey, clan. Hey, look.
00:53:48Give me some water. Give me some water. Give me some water.
00:53:50Come on.
00:53:52Keep your head moving.
00:53:54We've got to get close to the man. We're staying too far out.
00:53:56It's okay. We're staying too far out.
00:53:58We're good. I got it.
00:54:00Okay. We're staying too far out.
00:54:02Inside. Inside. Read the body. Don't throw one to the panche.
00:54:04This is your chance. Okay, Adam?
00:54:06You either want the belt or you want his friendship.
00:54:08Right now. You understand?
00:54:10Ladies and gentlemen, this is your goal.
00:54:12And...
00:54:14Title round.
00:54:24Phil Boisier says there shouldn't be any friendship in the ring.
00:54:26But, let's face it.
00:54:28They have fought like friends tonight.
00:54:30Kelly's off really having a hard time connecting on this guy.
00:54:34This guy is a lot better than you think he is.
00:54:36He's not going to let you get hit him with an effective shot.
00:54:38It's a bad matchup for a good fight, George.
00:54:42It's as simple as that.
00:54:44The doctor asked Adam,
00:54:46Do you have trouble with double vision?
00:54:48And often I've said the same thing.
00:54:50No, I got triple vision here.
00:54:52Sometimes you send three or four guys.
00:54:56Well, Lomanski could qualify for a quarter share of a corner man's salary tonight.
00:55:04He was in Adams' corner for three or four consecutive between-round breaks.
00:55:10The judge is right because when that bell rings, you only got a few seconds it takes to get back to your corner.
00:55:18All that ticking away and then the doctors are waiting around too, it's hard.
00:55:22If Bones Adams wanted to win the fight, he'd be bringing the kitchen sink in this round.
00:55:26So far, he has not even brought a china pattern.
00:55:30Hard left hand by Kelly.
00:55:32Straight left into the mouth of Adams.
00:55:35Now here comes Bones.
00:55:38Bones is doing what he should have been doing early on.
00:55:41Well, not now he isn't.
00:55:51He stopped.
00:55:57Forget the belt. The friendship remains intact.
00:55:59I think they are going to dinner, Larry.
00:56:06Our producer informs me that there won't be any interviews after this fight
00:56:10because we have to get another fight in.
00:56:13I'm a little disappointed because I wanted to ask Kelly why this fight stunk so much
00:56:19and get his response.
00:56:21It'll be quick.
00:56:24No, no.
00:56:25No quick answers from Kevin.
00:56:27That's right.
00:56:30He's really fighting a very skillful defensive fighter.
00:56:33Probably why you use him as a sparring pun.
00:56:35Well, they've had a lot of fun together over the years.
00:56:41Kelly was 22.
00:56:43Bones Adams was 15 when they first met in New York.
00:56:46They've traveled together.
00:56:48Dined together.
00:56:52Laughed together.
00:56:53And tonight, they've plotted through 12 unmemorable rounds together.
00:56:58Tiny segment of the crowd chanting Kelly, Kelly.
00:57:08Final assault by Bones Adams.
00:57:13And mercifully, the bell brings an end to it.
00:57:19Good job, Miguel.
00:57:20Excellent.
00:57:21Out of the crowd.
00:57:22Good job, Miguel.
00:57:23Excellent.
00:57:24Out of the crowd.
00:57:25Good job.
00:57:26Good job, Miguel.
00:57:27Excellent.
00:57:28Out of Gavin, Kelly's cut man, saying to Miguel Diaz his opposite number.
00:57:53Bones Adams cut man.
00:57:54Good job, Miguel.
00:57:55Good job, Miguel.
00:57:56Within that fraternity, they're two of the best.
00:57:58Yeah.
00:57:59And Kelly said to Adams, you want to eat Italian or Chinese?
00:58:04Good friend.
00:58:06Well, at least after tonight, nobody's going to be eating soup with a straw.
00:58:13Solid food for both fighters.
00:58:18We get some fluid in you, kid.
00:58:19I'm good.
00:58:20I'm good.
00:58:21I'm good.
00:58:22Get some fluid in you.
00:58:23With the eye all swollen up like that, maybe this is a good night for Clarence to try the
00:58:30squid salad.
00:58:31Yeah.
00:58:32Hold on.
00:58:33Final punch stat numbers in this 12 round dance between Kevin Kelly and Bones Adams.
00:58:42145 punches landed.
00:58:44On a good night, Kevin Kelly would land that many punches in three or four rounds.
00:58:48Adams, 23%.
00:58:51Right now, let's go to the ring announcer, Michael Buffer, for the official decision.
00:58:56Ladies and gentlemen, here at Caesars Palace, we go to the scorecards.
00:59:01Bill Graham scores the bout.
00:59:03116 to 112.
00:59:06He has it for Adams.
00:59:08Clark Sammartino and Art Lurie both scored the bout.
00:59:13114 to 114.
00:59:15It's a majority draw.
00:59:18This was for a vacant title.
00:59:20The title remains vacant.
00:59:23Well, I'm very, very surprised by the result of the fight.
00:59:28But it's probably dramatically correct to make it a draw.
00:59:34I thought Kelly clearly won the fight.
00:59:37Second draw of Kevin Kelly's career to go with the technical draw in his last bout against Tommy Parks.
00:59:45So now he has a technical draw and a real draw in July and September of 1995.
00:59:51And an unusual decision.
00:59:54Harold Letterman, I take it you do not concur.
00:59:58No, not at all.
00:59:59I agree with my comrade Larry Merchant.
01:00:01I had a 116, 112, eight rounds to four Kevin Kelly.
01:00:04But you know something, Jim?
01:00:05I gave the last two rounds to Bones Adams.
01:00:07And you know, when you've got a guy whose eye is completely closed up, for God's sake,
01:00:11a southpaw throws right hooks.
01:00:13A hook, by definition, is a punch that's thrown with the lead arm, with the outstretched arm.
01:00:18Kevin Kelly should have been throwing right hooks at Bones Adams' closed-up eye.
01:00:22And he didn't.
01:00:24He let Clarence steal the last two rounds and get the draw.
01:00:26But certainly I thought Kevin won just as Larry thought he would.
01:00:29He was the aggressor.
01:00:30He landed the cleaner, harder shots.
01:00:32Came forward, doesn't have a scratch on him.
01:00:36Next up for Kevin Kelly and Clarence Bones Adams' dinner.
01:00:39After that decision, I guess they split the check.
01:00:41Meanwhile, in the ring, Oscar De La Hoya will be fighting against Gennaro Hernandez,
01:00:47lightweight champion against junior lightweight champion moving up in weight.
01:00:51Both of them unbeaten fighters.
01:00:53For more on that and the evening of boxing, boxing night in America,
01:00:58let's go upstairs to our host, James Brown.
01:01:00All right, Jim, one of your early instructions to me, taking over in the fight game,
01:01:07was not to be surprised at anything.
01:01:09And indeed, this falls into that category.
01:01:11I dare say that the friendship between Kelly and Adams certainly got in the way of their fight tonight.
01:01:16All right, coming up, as you mentioned in just a bit, after the next bout,
01:01:20it will be Oscar De La Hoya and Gennaro Hernandez.
01:01:23Now, these two fighters are looking to settle the few that has been ongoing for some four years.
01:01:28Let's take a look back at the weigh-in yesterday.
01:01:31Oscar De La Hoya, yes, indeed, he had to try to make the 135 limit,
01:01:34but Gennaro Hernandez at 511 and rail-thin had no problems.
01:01:39He knocked in at 133, moving up in weight to take on Oscar De La Hoya,
01:01:44who, upon the first weighing, was a little over, had to step off,
01:01:48take off some outerwear and get back up on the scale to see if he was at the 135 limit.
01:01:54That didn't do it.
01:01:55Oscar had to step off the scale again and folks take off the last stitch of clothing that he had on,
01:02:01that being his boxer shorts.
01:02:03And once he did that with a towel draped over him, properly so,
01:02:08he barely made the weight limit of 135.
01:02:13So that is what we have as we set the stage for the bout coming up in just a bit between Oscar De La Hoya and Gennaro Hernandez.
01:02:21Joining me right now to talk about the main event, the Oscar De La Hoya and Gennaro Hernandez.
01:02:26Joining me right now to talk about the main event, the president of Caesars World Sports, Rich Rose.
01:02:31Rich, good to have you with me.
01:02:32James, nice to be here.
01:02:33All right, of course, we were smiling about the weigh-in, but let's talk a little bit about Oscar De La Hoya.
01:02:37It was back on May 6th here when he fought the Rafael Ruelas, won impressively in two rounds.
01:02:43Do you think that fight helped to make Oscar more than just a West Coast fighter getting the respect of a Pernell Whitaker and Roy Jones Jr.?
01:02:51I think it definitely increased his respect.
01:02:53I think the fact that he went out and dominated Ruelas gave a lot of people in the Midwest, in the East,
01:02:59who had never seen Oscar a chance to really see this man at his peak.
01:03:03I think if he wins tonight, if he beats Gennaro Hernandez, another tough fighter, it just raises him one more notch.
01:03:10There's talk of perhaps a fight, if Oscar wins tonight, in Madison Square Garden, our sister company with ITT, maybe later in the year.
01:03:19But really, first things first, tonight, this is the kind of fight that brings him towards a Pernell Whitaker, towards a Roy Jones Jr.
01:03:27Boxing needs superstars. Oscar has the personality and the ability to be that, taking nothing away from Gennaro.
01:03:34Oscar could do it. This is one more stepping stone.
01:03:36And a big stepping stone that he will have to overcome tonight.
01:03:39Let's talk a little bit also about November the 4th.
01:03:42Again, the third in the series of Riddick Vogue and Evander Holyfield will take place right here at Caesars Palace.
01:03:48What about the health of the heavyweight division and what do you expect on the night of November the 4th?
01:03:53I think it's a tremendous, tremendous series that's going on, kind of reminiscent of Ali Frazier, who had the great three fights maybe 20 years ago.
01:04:01And I think you've got 24 rounds dead even.
01:04:04Riddick Vogue wins the first fight. Evander Holyfield wins the second fight.
01:04:08I think this is going to settle a score for both guys as well as really, in the public's eye, determine who's considered the best heavyweight in the world.
01:04:16I think there are a lot of good heavyweights out there now.
01:04:19Tommy Morrison and Lennox Lewis are going to fight next month in Atlantic City to kind of like see who's up there.
01:04:26Michael Moore, George Foreman are out there. A guy by the name of Mike Tyson is out there.
01:04:30I think the heavyweight division has some great fights. But first and foremost, I think the winner of Bo Holyfield is that number one guy.
01:04:37Finally and quickly, as I shift gears, my colleague Ringside referenced another great sporting event taking place at the U.S. Open.
01:04:44In two weeks, we'll have some tennis here. USA against Sweden in the Davis Cup.
01:04:48What about Andre Agassi coming back home to play?
01:04:51I think it's great. I think it's wonderful for the sport of tennis for him to come back.
01:04:55Caesars is very happy to be presenting it. It's going to be really the U.S. team, which will be Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi playing tomorrow in the U.S. Open final.
01:05:04I think Stefan Edberg, a great player. Probably Thomas Enkwes will represent Sweden. They beat the U.S. last year.
01:05:10They're the defending cup champions. So I think the U.S. is looking for a win here and it'll be a great event.
01:05:15Good to see you again, Rich.
01:05:16You too, James. Thanks for having me.
01:05:18Thank you very much.
01:05:19All right, folks, before we bring you the main event, we've got a heavyweight bout coming your way between a young man by the name of Adam Scott, who comes out of Chattanooga.
01:05:26.
01:05:27.
01:05:28.
01:05:29.
01:05:31.
01:05:32.
01:05:33.
01:05:34.
01:05:36.
