00:00Please be aware that this program contains themes of sexual violence.
00:12I don't get to find out very much about the individuals who have died.
00:17I always think that the best I can do for somebody who can no longer speak for themselves is to do my level best as a professional scientist.
00:27And I don't think you can let yourself get very emotionally involved.
00:32I think you just have to do your job.
00:37The most important person in all this is the victim.
00:43She was just starting out in life. She had everything in front of her.
00:46And her life was snuffed out in a very brutal, horrendous way.
00:50We have a picture on the wall in the instant room at all times.
00:56And that is the person, they're known as nominal one, the most important person.
01:00That's who we're working for to get justice.
01:02Some breaking news. A teenage girl's body has been found in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Huff area of Bolton.
01:16Roads around Crawford Avenue and the Bolton Institute have been closed, while police search for clues.
01:35The body was found at 3.30 a.m. on that Sunday morning by two local men.
01:54A naked body was found here. She was laid on the back.
01:57Her head was here. Her legs were pointing down here.
02:02And her arms were in this position.
02:07And it looked as though she'd been probably dragged and her arms had collapsed into her shoulders and her sides.
02:14And there was dirt marks all down this side here.
02:19Senior investigating officer Tony Cook and his team soon identified the body as local girl, Carly Bateman.
02:26Carly Bateman was 17 years of age, still legally a child.
02:35She'd just fallen into the lifestyle of drugs and prostitution to fund the drug taking.
02:45She came from a decent family, but unfortunately had started to skip off school and go absent from home for long periods of time
02:53and ended up in this seedy world of prostitution and drugs.
02:59Carly's body was found in what was once the heart of Bolton's red light district.
03:04So we're on Crawford Avenue in Bolton, which is just on the edge of the town centre.
03:14In 2001, this area was used by sex workers to bring their clients who they would pick up in the town centre.
03:23The reason why it was chosen by sex workers is that it was nice and quiet.
03:33The gates that are here now weren't here, so you could get easy access.
03:37You could drive in at the bottom. They could do what they needed to do around the back, which was nice and dark and quiet.
03:44And then this was the exit, so you could drive in one end and out the other.
03:49And a lot of the houses we see here, big old Victorian style houses, were separated into bedsits.
03:55So a lot of them attracted drug dealers and sex workers themselves.
04:04This area is close to Bolton's red light district and it's thought Carly may have been involved in prostitution in the past.
04:12Local people say they've been played by pimps, prostitutes and drug dealers and they say this kind of tragedy was waiting to happen.
04:19Carly was addicted to heroin and police first suspected that she died from an overdose.
04:27SIO Tony Cook wasn't convinced.
04:31The circumstances of a possible drug overdose or an accidental death just didn't stack up to me.
04:38Why was she naked was the most obvious clue.
04:41She was outside gates to houses that were locked.
04:45So where did she come from if it was a drug overdose?
04:49We did actually search the addresses nearby, which were bedsits, used by drug dealers as well.
04:54And it just didn't stack up that it was a possible drug overdose.
05:01Carly was also known to Bolton social services, who say they are looking at circumstances that led up to her death and reviewing their involvement.
05:08Fortunately, some really good decisions were made here at the scene because the scene was properly secured and protected, which is routine procedure, normal procedure for a murder investigation.
05:25So this area would have been completely secure.
05:28There was cordons at the bottom and at the top to make sure nobody could get in.
05:32And that then allowed us to start really intense, in-depth forensic examination of the scene, bringing in the forensic scientists and the experts.
05:41My name is Caroline Eames and in 2001 I was and still am a senior forensic scientist.
06:02Cases where a body is found outside are always difficult because you've no parameters to the scene.
06:14If a murder happens in a room, then you've got the walls and the doors and that contains the scene essentially.
06:20But outside, that person could have been brought there in a car, might have been dragged there, they might have been dragged out of a house.
06:29In this particular case, the main difficulty was that the deceased was naked.
06:36And the clothing and footwear is a repository for a huge amount of forensic evidence.
06:43Because she was naked, there was only her skin, her hair, her nails to think about really.
06:56I don't get to find out very much about the individuals who have died.
07:03I always think that the best I can do for somebody who can no longer speak for themselves is to do my level best as a professional.
07:12Scientist and I don't think you can let yourself get very emotionally involved.
07:18I think you just have to do your job.
07:24The body was sampled and tape lifts were used to recover cellular material and fibres, hairs from the surface of the body.
07:35Swabs were used to recover possible cellular material from points of potential contact.
07:42For example, under the knees, the ankles, under the armpits, where she may have been picked up.
07:48I felt because her body was very clean, apart from the mud staining on her thigh, her foot and one of her hands,
08:02I felt that she had probably been placed there.
08:06So then the question is, where are her clothes?
08:10When was she undressed? Was she alive or was she dead when she was undressed?
08:14And how did she get there?
08:17While the forensic team carried out their work, the investigation took a sinister turn.
08:24On examination on the body, the pathologist found that there was indications of a strangulation and asphyxiation and quickly ruled that she'd actually been murdered.
08:36On examination on the body, the body of 17-year-old Carly Bateman has been found.
08:54And police launched a murder investigation.
09:09Post-mortem tests revealed that Carly Bateman died from pressure to her neck.
09:13Detectives are appealing for any information that will help catch her killer.
09:17The most important person in all this is the victim, Carly Bateman.
09:22She was just 17. She wasn't even an adult.
09:25She was just starting out in life. She had everything in front of her.
09:29And her life was snuffed out in a very brutal and horrendous way.
09:33We have the picture on the wall in the instant room at all times.
09:37And that is the person, they're known as nominal one, the most important person.
09:41That's who we're working for to get justice.
09:44Joaquin.
09:51Is that all?
09:53I got a gun.
09:54Except two, Carly. And lots of love that.
09:56Mummy and Mother.
10:05Car хорошо.
10:07Has it gone in there with all my bubbles?
10:08Carly was loved by her family, and she was the youngest of three.
10:21She'd gone to school, but was skiving school all the time.
10:26She just fell into the wrong crowd.
10:29She used drugs. Her parents had tried so hard to get her off the drugs.
10:34They'd even sent her to a private school.
10:37I know her family had moved away from the area
10:39and taken her away from the area to try and help her
10:42because she'd fallen in with the wrong crowd.
10:44But she'd come back to Bolton.
10:47She was back in an area where she felt that she could thrive in a way.
10:53She just saw prostitution as a way of getting that money to fund that drugs habit.
11:02She was a vulnerable young girl in Bolton,
11:04and at the time, there was a lot of vulnerable young girls
11:08who seemed to come to Bolton because of prostitution
11:13and because they knew that they could make money doing that.
11:18Good morning, girls.
11:27Good morning.
11:29Urban Outreach, it was born to actually work with or serve the people of Bolton
11:38who were marginalised, who are not always accepted by the public,
11:44people who were homeless, people who were disadvantaged.
11:47She's going back to see me tomorrow, anyway.
11:51All right.
11:53Is she still working, did she say?
11:54Yeah, she's still working.
11:57My name's Sheila.
11:59I chose, really, I suppose, that I did once work with street sex workers
12:04because when they went out to work at night
12:07to when we saw them during the day, totally different.
12:11So where the public will probably see a sex worker or a prostitute
12:15and see them as that,
12:18I had the privilege of seeing them in their own flats.
12:22They became the real person.
12:25But they'd have to go out at night
12:27to fund some kind of a habit, an addiction.
12:31Everybody's got a story, and everyone will be slightly different.
12:39So I don't know what led Carly up to her addiction.
12:44I don't know, but I know her addiction drove her onto the streets.
12:51I think all you need to do is look at Carly's picture,
12:55and you see this lovely girl.
12:57She was an amazing girl, a bit of a cheeky girl.
13:01Always laughing, big smile, big blue eyes.
13:04You couldn't...
13:05Everybody saw these big blue eyes.
13:07And really, she did look about...
13:09Probably looked about 13, 14.
13:12She didn't look very old at all.
13:17Carly was someone Sheila had a personal connection to.
13:21The police came looking for her one night.
13:26She flung her window open, and she jumped out.
13:29I'm not sure, I think she might have been carrying the trainers.
13:32And she'd come out, and she'd run, and she'd wave,
13:34see you, see you later, bye.
13:35And it was so funny, and she just...
13:37She was laughing, I was laughing,
13:38and the police were knocking on the door, I think,
13:40and she'd already jumped out of the window and escaped.
13:43That was the last time I saw Carly, yeah.
13:54At the crime scene, the forensic team, led by Caroline Eames,
13:58needed to carry out intimate swabs,
14:00which could reveal DNA evidence of Carly's killer.
14:04When the intimate swabs came in from her mouth,
14:11from other orifices,
14:15they would be routinely examined for semen.
14:19And to find semen in the mouth
14:21indicates a recent contact,
14:25because semen does not persist in the mouth
14:27beyond a few hours.
14:29So, Tony Cook asked me
14:33if we would then look at her stomach contents,
14:36because there were only a few sperm cells,
14:39and at that time, in the year 2000,
14:41DNA profiling was in its infancy, really, still.
14:47And you needed a fair amount of material
14:50to obtain a full DNA profile.
14:54So he asked us to look at her stomach contents
14:56to see if she had swallowed some semen
15:01and we could retrieve some more.
15:03And we did find a further four or five sperm cells.
15:10We had to look at other parts of her body,
15:13the contact areas, like under the arms
15:15and around the ankles,
15:16and we did find traces of material
15:19which was similar to the semen in the mouth.
15:23Now, the contact DNA lasts even a shorter time
15:29than semen in the mouth.
15:31So we felt that that individual
15:34was going to be probably the last contact
15:38that she'd had prior to her death.
15:41Caroline and her team were now able
15:50to take the minute samples of evidence,
15:53but would there be enough to generate a DNA profile?
15:59After Carly's body had been removed,
16:02the forensic team focused on the trail of evidence
16:05left at the scene.
16:06What we did find interesting enough,
16:11as well as a lot of used condoms
16:13and obviously the evidential opportunities
16:16from Carly's body itself,
16:18DNA, fingerprints, fibres,
16:20the forensic scientists also found
16:22some interesting car tyre marks.
16:29Now, bearing in mind this was an area
16:31habitually used by sex workers
16:34to take the clients more often in cars,
16:37we had to eliminate car tyre marks
16:40because one of them could have been
16:42from a vehicle used by our offender.
16:44So that was a really important find
16:46at the crime scene.
16:49Before the tyre marks faded,
16:51the forensic team took casts
16:53and photographs of them.
16:54The investigating team now shifted their focus
17:11to people who could have passed through the alley
17:13either on foot or by vehicle
17:16in the early hours of the 11th of November, 2001.
17:20We had a lot of people to interview
17:23and a lot of men who were using sex workers
17:27and I ended up doing an appeal,
17:30a TV appeal,
17:31asking them to come forward
17:32to give their samples,
17:33DNA and fingerprint samples
17:35or to expect a knock on the door
17:37by a police officer.
17:39We want to speak to these people
17:40who might be in their own interest
17:42to come forward voluntarily
17:43as opposed to us seeking them out
17:45and knocking them on the doors.
17:46If they do come forward,
17:48I can give them a guarantee
17:49they were treated sensitively
17:51and in the utmost confidence.
17:56And it obviously worked
17:58because one morning,
18:00the day after I'd done the appeal,
18:02is that there were a line of males
18:04outside the police station
18:05all looking very sheepish
18:07and offering themselves to be interviewed
18:10and give the samples.
18:12So that was a very effective tactic at the time.
18:16One by one,
18:19the men were interviewed
18:21and those that owned vehicles
18:24had their tires checked
18:25to see if they matched the marks
18:27found at the crime scene.
18:29No suspects were identified.
18:33With a killer on the loose,
18:35the red light district of Bolton
18:37was a dangerous place to be.
18:39Despite the risk,
18:41sex workers carried on as normal.
18:42Carly was one of the youngest girls
18:47and we had some older women
18:49down there, 30s, 40.
18:53And they were tough girls as well
18:55and I think they might have seen themselves
18:57as somebody who could fight somebody off,
18:59but Carly didn't have
19:00that much of a chance.
19:02When they heard that Carly died,
19:05it didn't make anybody stop working.
19:06You know, everybody's...
19:09They knew when they got in a car,
19:11they put their life at risk.
19:13They knew if they went down
19:14to the back of their bushes,
19:15your life's at risk
19:16because girls got beaten.
19:21I think the girls were like an autopilot
19:23and they just carried on
19:26doing what they were doing.
19:28You know,
19:28you can't just walk out of addiction.
19:31If heroin gets you,
19:32it gets you.
19:33It takes lives
19:34and lies before
19:37it's time.
19:42We found a lot.
19:44We uncovered a lot
19:44and spoke to a lot of dangerous males
19:47during the course of our inquiry
19:50who we all discussed between ourselves
19:53and thought, you know,
19:53they could be the next offender here
19:55and these girls put themselves
19:57at so much risk.
19:58And if you look at Carly Bayman's murder,
20:02she was a 17-year-old girl.
20:03She looked a lot younger than 17.
20:06You're going to attract
20:07a particular sort of male
20:08who is looking for
20:10that age group of sex worker,
20:12probably a paedophile,
20:14and that was factored in
20:15to the profile
20:16of who we thought was our offender.
20:21The police started to build
20:23a profile of Carly's killer.
20:25A team was assigned
20:27to review CCTV
20:28from around Bolton
20:30to track her final movements.
20:33Luckily, we found
20:35some CCTV cameras
20:36on the entrance
20:38and exit
20:39of the hostel,
20:40which showed her leaving
20:42there at 11.32pm
20:44on that Saturday evening.
20:46And also,
20:47that was important
20:48as to what she was wearing
20:49because, burning mind,
20:50we were looking for clothing
20:51because her body was naked.
20:53So that key time for us,
20:55the relevant time,
20:56was 11.32pm
20:57till 3.30am
20:59when the body was found,
21:01what had happened
21:01in that interim period
21:02and at what time
21:04had she actually been murdered.
21:08Police carried out
21:10a search across Bolton
21:11looking for Carly's clothes.
21:13They searched rivers
21:15and waterways,
21:16bins and skips
21:17and knocked on doors.
21:19Nothing was found.
21:20Carly's family
21:24also made an appeal
21:25on the news.
21:27Anyone with any information,
21:29they must come forward.
21:30Please come forward.
21:32She's just a waste
21:33of a good life.
21:34She's a good family,
21:35a loving home.
21:37Nobody,
21:37nobody must judge her
21:38for anything.
21:40In the incident room,
21:42the investigation team
21:43had received
21:44a significant police report
21:46from the morning
21:47of the murder.
21:47An officer
21:50put some information in
21:52that he had stock-checked
21:54a male in a car
21:55very near the vicinity
21:57of the scene
21:58where the murder
21:59had taken place
22:00and that he'd spoken
22:02to this male.
22:03And when he'd spoken
22:04to him,
22:05he thought it was
22:05a bit suspicious
22:06that the male
22:07had some training shoes,
22:10what looked like
22:11small female training shoes
22:13and a sports jacket
22:14or a sports coat
22:15on the back seat
22:16of his car
22:17and also a lot
22:18of condoms.
22:19So he asked him
22:20about that
22:21and he said
22:21that he was
22:22minding them
22:22for a prostitute.
22:25Carly's body
22:26was found naked.
22:30Could the clothing
22:31seen in the back
22:32of the car
22:32belong to her?
22:34So that man's details
22:37then entered
22:38our inquiry.
22:39That man was
22:41a male named
22:42Geoffrey Porter.
22:45What's more,
22:47Geoffrey Porter
22:48was already
22:48known to the police.
22:53Geoffrey Porter,
22:54when we did
22:55a full profile
22:56on him,
22:57actually came
22:58from Wigan,
22:59which was
23:00a neighbouring town.
23:01He had some
23:02previous convictions
23:03for indecent assault
23:05on young girls.
23:09And he was
23:12who we would
23:13class probably
23:14a paedophile.
23:16We came
23:17within the profile
23:18of somebody
23:19who might have
23:19had interest
23:20in someone
23:20like Carly.
23:22So all of a sudden,
23:23Geoffrey Porter
23:24were ticking
23:25some boxes
23:26in terms of
23:26this person
23:27being of interest.
23:27It was now
23:46four weeks
23:47since the naked
23:48body of 17-year-old
23:49Carly Bateman
23:50was found
23:51in an alleyway
23:52near Bolton
23:53town centre.
23:53Police were
23:59closing in
24:00on a man
24:00they believed
24:01could be
24:01connected
24:02to Carly's
24:02murder,
24:03a man
24:04with previous
24:04convictions
24:05for sexual
24:06offences
24:06against young
24:07girls.
24:08His name
24:09was Geoffrey
24:10Porter.
24:13Officers went
24:13to interview him
24:14and he said
24:14he knew
24:15Carly Bateman
24:16and he'd
24:17actually used
24:18her services
24:19previously
24:20and he had
24:22seen her
24:22the night
24:23before she
24:23was murdered.
24:24He hadn't
24:25though of
24:26real significance
24:27he said
24:28he hadn't
24:29seen her
24:29or had
24:30any intimate
24:31contact with her
24:31any sexual
24:32contact with her
24:33on the night
24:34she was murdered.
24:37The officers
24:38who went to see him
24:39took some samples
24:39of him
24:40which were DNA.
24:43We looked
24:44at his car
24:45he owned
24:46a Proton car
24:47and they found
24:48when they looked
24:48at the tires
24:50on that vehicle
24:51against the images
24:52of the tire marks
24:54we had
24:54at the scene
24:55of the crime
24:56there was a match.
25:01So all of a sudden
25:03Geoffrey Porter
25:04might be of interest
25:05in this inquiry.
25:07Geoffrey Porter
25:08gave a plausible
25:09explanation
25:10and police
25:11didn't have enough
25:12evidence
25:12to arrest him.
25:14They did leave
25:15with a vital
25:16DNA sample
25:17but they
25:18still had nothing
25:19to compare it to.
25:22We just
25:22didn't have
25:23the results
25:23from the forensic
25:24examinations.
25:25Caroline Eames
25:26I was trying
25:27to push her along
25:27but she was doing
25:28the best she could
25:29and she was using
25:31technology
25:32that had just
25:33been invented
25:33in some of the cases
25:35to try and develop
25:36DNA from
25:38samples taken
25:39from very
25:40minutiae
25:41pieces of evidence
25:42that were recovered
25:42from the body
25:43externally
25:44and internally
25:45as well
25:45but it's never
25:46guaranteed.
25:47I could have
25:48got a phone call
25:49from Caroline Eames
25:49that said
25:50I'm sorry Mr Cook
25:52but this is negative
25:54and we haven't
25:55got a match
25:56or we haven't
25:57got enough
25:57material to work
25:59on and we
26:00can't get a result.
26:01It would have been
26:01a huge blow
26:02to the investigation.
26:08There's an awful
26:09lot of work
26:10that takes a long
26:11time.
26:12The fibre
26:12comparison work
26:13the mitochondrial
26:15DNA
26:15we used a technique
26:17called low copy
26:18number for the
26:19touch samples
26:19on her body
26:20and that took
26:21a long time.
26:23DNA profiling
26:24in itself
26:25was taking much
26:26longer than it
26:27does today
26:27and to write up
26:29a case
26:30of that size
26:32alongside
26:33all the other
26:34cases I was
26:34managing at the
26:35time
26:35that takes
26:36a lot
26:37a lot.
26:40My force
26:41would be thinking
26:41this is going to
26:42go on for a
26:43long long time
26:43so I was under
26:45a lot of pressure
26:45and the local
26:47newspaper had
26:48quoted me as
26:49saying Mr Cook
26:50has pledged
26:51to solve this
26:53case pretty quickly
26:54but it just
26:55added a lot more
26:55pressure to us
26:57and every time
26:58I went and
26:59did a media
27:00repeat
27:00while it was
27:01meant sports
27:01the media
27:02had given
27:02an update
27:03the question
27:04was why
27:04is it taking
27:04you so long?
27:07As pressure
27:08mounted on the
27:08police to give
27:09answers
27:10the media
27:11cast judgment
27:11on the victim
27:12too.
27:14When it comes
27:15to sex workers
27:16the media
27:17have got a lot
27:17to answer
27:18from the way
27:19that they used
27:20to portray
27:20the workers
27:22the women
27:22because
27:23it was always
27:25victim blaming
27:26it was their
27:28fault
27:28they were the
27:29ones selling
27:29their body
27:30society was
27:31saying it
27:31the media
27:32was saying
27:32it
27:33this was
27:37probably one
27:38of the cases
27:38that helped
27:39change it
27:40because people
27:41thought
27:41do you know
27:42what she comes
27:43from a nice
27:43family
27:44she's tried
27:46to help
27:47herself
27:47she was
27:48trying to
27:49help herself
27:50but the drugs
27:51had taken
27:51hold
27:51and then I
27:52think after
27:53this people
27:54started thinking
27:54well why
27:55are people
27:56doing this
27:57rather than
27:57blaming them
27:58for doing it
27:59there will
28:01always be
28:02girls out
28:03there
28:03what we
28:04can't
28:04say
28:05we can't
28:05handhold
28:06certain girls
28:07like Carla
28:08have slipped
28:08through the
28:09net
28:09a lot of
28:10work went
28:10into
28:11trying to
28:12help Carla
28:12and she
28:13was a
28:14lovely girl
28:15and she
28:16was making
28:16some wrong
28:17choices
28:17but nothing
28:19could have
28:19changed that
28:20family
28:21nobody
28:21could have
28:22changed
28:22it
28:22six weeks
28:35after the
28:36murder
28:36of
28:36Carly
28:36Bateman
28:37police
28:38finally
28:38had a
28:39breakthrough
28:39the team
28:42of officers
28:42who were
28:43dedicated
28:43to reviewing
28:44the CCTV
28:45footage
28:45found a
28:46real nugget
28:47of information
28:48from
28:49a CCTV
28:50camera
28:51which is
28:52located
28:52on a
28:53building
28:53called
28:54the
28:54foundry
28:54which is
28:55right in
28:55the middle
28:56of the
28:56red light
28:56district
28:57in Bolton
28:57on that
28:59footage
28:59it showed
29:01a male
29:01in a
29:02vehicle
29:02at 5am
29:03in the
29:03morning
29:04this is
29:055am
29:05after the
29:06body's
29:06been found
29:07stopping
29:09alongside
29:09a skip
29:10a builder
29:11skip
29:11which was
29:11on the
29:12road
29:12and getting
29:13out of his
29:14car
29:15and putting
29:15something
29:16into that
29:16skip
29:17getting back
29:18into his
29:18car
29:19and driving
29:19away
29:20why was that
29:21significant
29:21significant
29:23because it
29:23was in the
29:23red light
29:24district
29:24near to
29:24the scene
29:25of the
29:25murder
29:25it was
29:26the timing
29:27of it
29:27and more
29:28importantly
29:28could this
29:29be missing
29:30clothing
29:30so that was
29:32a really
29:32important line
29:33of inquiry
29:33and we had
29:34we didn't have
29:34a vehicle
29:35registration
29:35number
29:35but we had
29:36the outline
29:37of the
29:37vehicle
29:38so we went
29:43to a vehicle
29:43expert
29:44who told us
29:44what sort
29:45of car
29:45he thought
29:46it was
29:46the expert
29:48identified
29:49the car

30:04footage
30:05but they
30:05needed
30:06to prove
30:06it
30:07so we
30:08went and
30:09seized that
30:09car from
30:10him
30:10and we
30:11were able
30:11to do a
30:11reconstruction
30:12with that
30:12car
30:13and put it
30:14in the
30:15same
30:15time
30:16on the
30:17same

30:17as the
30:18one we'd
30:18got on
30:19the cctv

30:20and we
30:20got an
30:21expert
30:21to look

31:22very

33:33prepared to

33:34jeffrey porter
33:35for a second
33:36time
33:37it's taken
33:39months of
33:40hard work
33:41to gather
33:41the crucial
33:42forensic evidence
33:43to use
33:44against him
33:44but would it

33:47to charge

33:48with caroline
33:49bateman's
33:49murder
33:50we knew
33:52that we had

33:54we knew
33:55we had
33:55traces of

33:58we knew

34:09were links
34:10between
34:10fibres on
34:12her and
34:12the car
34:13we had
34:14all the
34:14information
34:15about the
34:16tyre marks
34:16we had
34:17the comparison
34:18between

34:20vehicle that
34:21had been
34:21seen on

34:26but
34:29caroline's
34:29work on
34:30the case
34:30wasn't
34:31over yet
34:31now she
34:33was required
34:33to help
34:34present the
34:34forensic evidence
34:35to counter
34:36porter's defence
34:37while he was
34:39being interviewed
34:40Tony Cook
34:41rang me up
34:42and said
34:43he's saying
34:44this
34:45what about
34:46this
34:46and I say
34:47no that
34:48doesn't fit
34:48and then he
34:49could put
34:50something else
34:50to Geoffrey
34:51Porter
34:52while he was
34:52being interviewed
34:53I believe
34:54they call that
34:54downstream
34:55interviewing
34:56I've never
34:56done it
34:57before
34:57I've never
34:59done it
34:59since
35:00but it's
35:02a very
35:02powerful way
35:03of putting
35:04the evidence
35:04to an
35:06individual
35:06he had
35:07nowhere to
35:08go
35:08in his

35:09it was
35:11brilliant
35:11Caroline's
35:14real-time
35:14forensic
35:15intelligence
35:16enabled
35:17Tony Cook
35:17to dismantle
35:18Porter's
35:19defence
35:19piece by
35:20piece
35:21and the
35:22biggest
35:22piece
35:23was to
35:24prove
35:24that
35:24Porter
35:25had been
35:25with
35:26Carly
35:26on the

35:43was
35:44he
35:44still
35:44saying
35:45that
35:45he
35:45did
35:45not
35:46have
35:46any
35:46sexual
35:47or
35:47intimate
35:48or
35:48physical
35:49contact
35:49with
35:50Carly
35:50Bateman
35:51on the
35:51night
35:52of
35:52the
35:52murder
35:52that
35:53was
35:53really
35:53important
35:54and
35:54we
35:54had
35:54to
35:55do
35:55that
35:55before
35:56we
35:56put
35:56to
35:57him
35:57the
35:57DNA
35:58evidence
35:58because
35:59we'd
35:59done it
35:59the other
35:59way around
36:00he could
36:00have
36:01changed
36:01his
36:01mind
36:01and
36:02thought
36:02actually
36:03I need
36:03to now
36:03say
36:04to defend
36:05myself
36:05and give
36:06myself
36:06a chance
36:06that I'd
36:07had sexual
36:08contact
36:08luckily
36:08we got
36:09the sequence
36:10right
36:10and he
36:11committed
36:12himself
36:12to his
36:13original
36:13statement
36:13and stuck
36:14to it
36:14that he
36:15hadn't
36:15had any
36:15sexual
36:16or physical
36:16contact
36:17on that
36:17night
36:18that was
36:18really
36:18important
36:19because it
36:19closed off
36:20a line
36:21of defence
36:21that he
36:21could have
36:22concocted
36:22after just
36:27one day
36:27of questioning
36:28Jeffrey
36:29Porter
36:29was charged
36:30with the
36:30murder
36:31of Carly
36:31Bateman
36:32it was a
36:33huge moment
36:34for SIO
36:34Tony Cook
36:35and the news
36:36was shared
36:37with Carly's
36:38family
36:38Carly's mother
36:40was informed
36:41the moment
36:42we charged
36:43him
36:43and obviously
36:44she was
36:44absolutely
36:44delighted
36:45it's very
36:46very sad
36:46when something
36:47like this
36:47happens
36:47but closure
36:48for the
36:49family
36:49is that
36:50we actually
36:51find out
36:51who was
36:52responsible
36:52so that
36:53was really
36:54important
36:54for them
36:5410 months
37:05later
37:05the trial
37:06of Jeffrey
37:07Porter
37:07began at
37:09Manchester
37:09Crown Court
37:10the prosecution
37:12team
37:13were very
37:13confident
37:14we had
37:14a strong
37:14case
37:15but
37:16you just
37:17never know
37:17with these
37:17cases
37:18there's always
37:18a loophole
37:19or some
37:20defence angle
37:21that you've
37:21not considered
37:22we had a
37:23strong case
37:23but a lot
37:24of it rested
37:25on forensic
37:26evidence
37:26which was
37:27going to be
37:27heavily scrutinised
37:29Carly and
37:31Eames
37:31and the team
37:32were going
37:32to give
37:32evidence
37:33and robustly
37:34defend the
37:35processes
37:36and procedures
37:36that they
37:37were watertight
37:38and 100%
37:39accurate
37:39Jeffrey Porter
37:42was quite a
37:43quiet man
37:43he was hiding
37:44of course
37:45this real
37:46secret
37:46which is the
37:47fact that
37:47he had an
37:48interest in
37:48young girls
37:49and he didn't
37:51show any remorse
37:52he just sat
37:53in the dock
37:54listened to
37:54all the evidence
37:55he didn't give
37:56evidence himself
37:56after a two
37:59week trial
38:00and more than
38:00a year since
38:01Carly Bateman's
38:02naked body
38:03was found
38:03dumped
38:04in an alleyway
38:04Jeffrey Porter
38:06was found
38:06guilty of her
38:07murder
38:08and sentenced
38:08to life
38:09in prison
38:10with a minimum
38:13term
38:13of 14 years
38:14Mr. Justice
38:19Holland
38:19told Porter
38:20it was you
38:21who used
38:22Carly Bateman
38:23for sexual
38:24relief
38:24it was you
38:25who continued
38:26that encounter
38:27by killing
38:28her
38:28he went on
38:29to say
38:29that Porter
38:30was a serious
38:31risk to young
38:31girls
38:32he said
38:32he would
38:33recommend
38:33to the
38:33home secretary
38:34that Porter
38:35was a very
38:35serious danger
38:36to young
38:37children
38:38when the jury
38:42did deliver
38:43the guilty
38:45verdict
38:45that was
38:45a huge
38:46sense of
38:46relief
38:47for not
38:49just me
38:50for my
38:50team
38:50for the
38:51victim's
38:52family
38:52who were
38:52sat there
38:53and for
38:54the community
38:55too
38:55that we'd
38:55got some
38:56closure
38:57on what
38:57was a
38:58really
38:58really
38:59distressing
39:00case
39:00and it's
39:01a great
39:01feeling
39:02and a great
39:02sense of
39:02achievement
39:03to bring
39:03a case
39:04like that
39:04to a
39:05successful
39:05conclusion
39:06the role
39:11of forensic
39:11in this
39:12case
39:12as with
39:13most
39:13criminal
39:14investigations
39:14these days
39:15is vitally
39:15important
39:16we depend
39:17heavily
39:17on the
39:18scientific
39:18approach
39:19to the
39:20investigation
39:20of crime
39:21and the
39:22support
39:22that they
39:22give us
39:23and in
39:23this case
39:24obviously
39:24that was
39:25a vital
39:25contribution
39:26by Caroline
39:27Ames
39:27and a
39:27team
39:28and you
39:29know
39:29well worth
39:30it because
39:30we got
39:31the right
39:31result
39:31at the
39:31end
39:32this case
39:36is one
39:37that I
39:37won't forget
39:38because of
39:39the amount
39:40of work
39:40we did
39:40on it
39:41but
39:42without
39:43Tony Cook's
39:44urging
39:45and
39:46intervention
39:47and
39:47persistence
39:48we wouldn't
39:49have done
39:50that amount
39:51of work
39:51he was a man
39:53you just
39:53couldn't say
39:54no to
39:54really
39:55it's six
40:11years since
40:12Phyllis
40:12Porter
40:12has been
40:13buried
40:13with her
40:13family
40:14grieving
40:14at her
40:14graveside
40:15and mystery
40:16has always
40:16surrounded
40:17her death
40:17the police
40:19decided to
40:20exhume her
40:21body
40:21when her
40:21father
40:22was convicted
40:22of murdering
40:23a young
40:24prostitute
40:24in Bolton
40:25Geoffrey Porter
40:26is currently
40:27serving a
40:28life sentence
40:28for the murder
40:29Tony Cook's
40:30investigation
40:31into Geoffrey
40:32Porter
40:32hadn't finished
40:33yet
40:34we found
40:36out that
40:36he had
40:37a daughter
40:37named
40:38Phyllis
40:39Porter
40:39who died
40:41some five
40:43or six
40:43years
40:43before
40:44the murder
40:45of Carly
40:45Bateman
40:46in very
40:47mysterious
40:48circumstances
40:49she was
40:50just found
40:51in a bed
40:52dead
40:52an investigation
40:54revealed that
40:55there was no
40:56cause of death
40:57and it just
40:57raised alarm bells
40:59with me
40:59because
41:00knowing that
41:00Geoffrey Porter
41:01and pedophile
41:02tendencies
41:02how did his
41:03daughter die
41:04he's 11
41:05I definitely
41:08wanted to
41:08reopen the case
41:09and that led
41:10to us
41:10exhuming
41:12Phyllis's
41:12body
41:13and re-examining
41:14the body
41:14again using
41:15forensic evidence
41:16and we did
41:20find some
41:20DNA
41:20that linked
41:21back to
41:21Geoffrey Porter
41:22the DNA
41:24evidence
41:24was sperm
41:25heads
41:25found in
41:26around her
41:26mouth
41:27so
41:28we thought
41:29yeah this
41:29is very
41:29similar to
41:30the Carly
41:30Bateman
41:30murder
41:31the pathologist
41:34did
41:35change his
41:37view
41:37as to the
41:38cause of
41:38death
41:38and said
41:39it was
41:39probably
41:40something
41:40called
41:41vagal
41:42inhibition
41:42which is
41:43a fear
41:44factor
41:44when somebody
41:44is put
41:45under so
41:45much fear
41:46and pressure
41:47of some
41:47activity
41:48that they
41:49die
41:49and we
41:50thought a
41:51sex attack
41:52had occurred
41:52and on that
41:53basis
41:53with the DNA
41:54evidence
41:55we got
41:55permission to
41:56charge Porter
41:57with murdering
41:58his own daughter
41:58and we took
41:59him to
42:00court
42:00the defense
42:06team brought
42:08Porter's wife
42:09as a witness
42:10and she came
42:11and gave
42:11evidence for
42:12him
42:12and that
42:14was enough
42:15to get
42:15our case
42:16ruled out
42:18of court
42:18unfortunately
42:19I think
42:25it was
42:25right
42:26that we
42:26charged him
42:27with the
42:27murder
42:28of his
42:28daughter
42:29he was
42:30acquitted
42:31of that
42:31but
42:32he was a
42:33very dangerous
42:34individual
42:34who had
42:35serious
42:37issues
42:37in terms
42:38of his
42:39sexual
42:39preferences
42:39and
42:41I'm just
42:42glad
42:42he was
42:43put out
42:44of harm's
42:45way
42:45into prison
42:46actually
42:46because I
42:47think he
42:47was pulled
42:47to danger
42:48to young
42:49females
42:49the people
42:54of Bolton
42:55were shocked
42:56to find out
42:57that he had
42:58such a
43:00vivid past
43:01and a
43:02troublesome
43:02past
43:03and he was
43:04walking the
43:04streets
43:05of the town
43:05but they
43:06were happy
43:07that justice
43:08had happened
43:09and they
43:10were relieved
43:11and happy
43:12for the family
43:12of Carly
43:13that they
43:13got the
43:14justice
43:14that she
43:15deserved
43:16Carly's
43:18murder
43:19had a
43:19lasting
43:20impact
43:20on the
43:21people
43:22of Bolton
43:22and also
43:23the wider
43:24area
43:24it led
43:25to calls
43:26for safer
43:27environments
43:27for sex
43:29workers
43:30and also
43:31for them
43:32to be seen
43:32more as
43:33victims
43:34rather than
43:34criminals
43:35it was
43:39the talk
43:39of the
43:39streets
43:40oh yeah
43:40they've
43:40got him
43:41brilliant
43:42brilliance
43:42you know
43:43the girls
43:44were so
43:45happy
43:45I think
43:46they were
43:46happy
43:46for Carly's
43:48family as
43:48well
43:49I hope
43:51people remember
43:52Carly as
43:53that cheeky face
43:55lovely girl
43:56but don't think
43:57about sex with
43:58what you think
43:59about her
43:59just think
44:00about this
44:00amazing young
44:01woman
44:02whose life
44:03was taken
44:03too short
44:32an
44:47woman
44:47woman
44:49flower
44:49and
44:50woman
44:50woman
44:52in
44:53who
44:54her
44:55daughter
44:56the
