00:00:00There's no sell-by date on that sort of thing.
00:00:03What they wrote was timeless because it was authentic.
00:00:07It's the kind of show I wish was on the air right now.
00:00:12Whenever you find it on TV, it makes me stop.
00:00:15And every joke is still just as funny.
00:00:17And this murderer's row of a cast.
00:00:20Ray, what's somebody you wanted in your home?
00:00:22You wanted to be part of that family.
00:00:26I believe in 20, 30, 40, 50 more years.
00:00:30We'll still love Everybody Loves Raymond.
00:00:31The writing and the acting, directing, that was near perfect, my God.
00:00:35And it's in color.
00:01:40I love you.
00:01:43I love you.
00:01:44Don't make me cry yet.
00:01:45There's going to be a lot of that.
00:01:47Let me just tell you something.
00:01:48The reason we're doing this is because of the fans.
00:01:51I mean, I miss it.
00:01:53I miss everything.
00:01:53I miss you people.
00:01:55I miss the cast.
00:01:57My real wife is backstage with my TV wife.
00:02:00Yes.
00:02:01If you've been married for a long time, folks, you know, there's a lot of ups and downs.
00:02:05And this is an example of how long we've been married.
00:02:08The other day, she actually said to me, you know, you don't talk a lot.
00:02:14But when you do, it's too much.
00:02:16We're going to have a great night.
00:02:21I'm so glad you're here.
00:02:22Who came from, like, far away?
00:02:24Who's from the...
00:02:24Where are you from?
00:02:25Philippines.
00:02:26I watched you when I was, like, seven or eight.
00:02:28In the Philippines?
00:02:29Yes.
00:02:30But, of course, dubbed in...
00:02:31No.
00:02:32I learned English from...
00:02:33You learned English from me.
00:02:39Well, I appreciate it.
00:02:44But thank you very much.
00:02:46Listen, before we go even further, I want to bring out a man who's been my partner in this
00:02:51venture, in this journey for the last 30 years.
00:02:55He's the reason that this show exists.
00:02:58But this was his baby just like it was mine.
00:03:01Please welcome Phil Rosenthal.
00:03:03How great is this?
00:03:19This is amazing.
00:03:20You learned how to speak English from Ray Romano?
00:03:23So were your first English words...
00:03:25Oh, no!
00:03:29First of all, let's get one thing out of the way.
00:03:31This, I'm sure you will know, is a reunion.
00:03:34This is a reunion that we...
00:03:36Not a reboot.
00:03:36We're never going to do one because we're missing three cast members, three family members,
00:03:42so we would never try to do the show without them.
00:03:44It wouldn't be the same.
00:03:45No.
00:03:45And we have too much respect for the show itself and for the beautiful audience to keep it the
00:03:51way it is.
00:03:51And thankfully, the show is still on every day all over the world, which...
00:03:57Right.
00:03:59If you want to visit your friends, we're here.
00:04:03How did we meet?
00:04:05Well, I was in bed.
00:04:07And I was watching David Letterman with my wife.
00:04:11This would have been 1995?
00:04:1395.
00:04:16We had a production company, and we were always looking for a funny project.
00:04:21And I think we were all pretty greedy when we saw Ray.
00:04:25Our ladies and gentlemen, next guest is a very funny comedian making his first appearance
00:04:30with us tonight.
00:04:31He can also be seen...
00:04:32Oh, I just look like a mid-level mortuary has gotten a hold of me.
00:04:36Do me a favor now.
00:04:37Please, a nice welcome for Ray Romano.
00:04:39Ray!
00:04:43My first impression, he's wearing his father's suit.
00:04:46But that's fine.
00:04:47I'm going to let that go.
00:04:48I have a three-year-old daughter and twin two-year-old boys.
00:04:53Well.
00:04:57Single people are here.
00:05:01I can make them laugh.
00:05:02I can make an infant laugh in a second.
00:05:03I'll tell you, I'm losing my perspective on adult humor.
00:05:06I wrote one new joke since my twins were born.
00:05:09Here, is this funny?
00:05:10What do you think it is?
00:05:12Hi!
00:05:14Hi, everybody!
00:05:17That rings true with me.
00:05:18I had no idea how to be a parent.
00:05:21So I thought, if I can make the kid laugh, I've done something.
00:05:25I'm glad.
00:05:25I'm glad you laughed.
00:05:26If you didn't laugh at that, I would have had to come and rub my nose in your bellies.
00:05:31Ray is the guy, and let's go, and before he gets in the cab, let's get him to sign something.
00:05:39And I think it was a combination of his likability and the quality of the material.
00:05:44I thought, you know, pretty run-of-the-mill topics, but the quality of the jokes in those topics, I thought were superior.
00:05:51It was just dumb luck that we had anything to do with it.
00:05:55It's like, you know, kids playing with fireworks.
00:05:59Oh, geez, it actually exploded.
00:06:01It was sort of like that.
00:06:03That's why we're here.
00:06:13A week later, they called me and said, we'd like to sign you to a deal to try to produce a sitcom.
00:06:20Right.
00:06:21And then I had to go find a guy to write it and run it.
00:06:25Did you?
00:06:30So they set us up on a blind date here in L.A. at Arts Deli on Ventura Boulevard, and we meet.
00:06:36And I say to Ray, you know, tell me about yourself, just like I would with any of you,
00:06:41if we were going to work together, but we didn't know each other.
00:06:43So tell me about yourself.
00:06:44And you said, well, I got twin boys and an older daughter, and my parents live close by in Queens.
00:06:50You got to do the voice?
00:06:51You got to do the little bit?
00:06:51A little bit.
00:06:52Yeah, okay.
00:06:52And then my older brother's a police sergeant.
00:06:56He lives with them.
00:06:57He's always touching every bite of food to his gym before he eats it, and he's kind of jealous of me.
00:07:01He saw my stand-up comedy award, and he said, never ends for Raymond.
00:07:05Everybody loves Raymond.
00:07:07And do you remember what I said?
00:07:09You said, well, I don't think there's anything there.
00:07:16Jokingly.
00:07:16I thought that was a very good place to start.
00:07:18And what I didn't know about the personalities in Ray's family, I filled in with the personalities from my family.
00:07:2690% of everything you saw on the show happened to me or to Ray or to one of the other writers.
00:07:34What are you doing?
00:07:36The show had premiered, and Ray said to his wife, Anna, my show just premiered in front of all these people.
00:07:44And she said, yeah, and I just cleaned plum off the ceiling from the kids.
00:07:50I think this show means everything to us.
00:07:53It got to capture our family, Ray's family, everybody who worked here, their families.
00:08:00It was just like a community, you know, we became a community.
00:08:03We all felt so safe here and welcomed.
00:08:05I remember my dad would, he'd come out right before the show, he'd greet the audience.
00:08:11He always would bring me up, say hello.
00:08:13He'd do the same joke with the audience about having twins.
00:08:16Like, here's Matt.
00:08:17I have another son.
00:08:19If he was here, it looked like this.
00:08:20And then I'd go behind him and stand on that side.
00:08:22There's one episode based on a real thing that I did, which is when I was in first grade.
00:08:27We all had to write books, you know, little picture books.
00:08:31My book was...
00:08:33The Angry Family.
00:08:38All the parents came in to read it, and, you know, they were all looking at my parents.
00:08:44Mommy was mad at the daddy.
00:08:49He got an episode out of it.
00:08:51Yeah, the Ray on the show is the Ray at home, and that is because at home, he does a lot
00:08:57of annoying things that drive me crazy.
00:09:00I think if I were to do an impression, it's just a little bit deeper, like, grunt, like,
00:09:05I don't know.
00:09:07People do the grunt, right?
00:09:08Oh, come on.
00:09:09My back is here.
00:09:11It's a little, oh, okay.
00:09:13Now it's even worse.
00:09:14Now it's even worse.
00:09:15Who brought the cookies here?
00:09:17Who brought the donuts?
00:09:18All right, I'm just going to eat one.
00:09:19Oh, my God.
00:09:20It's so good.
00:09:21Five minutes later.
00:09:23Oh, my stomach hurts.
00:09:24Allie, why'd you do that?
00:09:25Oh, damn that.
00:09:27Oh, no.
00:09:28It's that raw.
00:09:29Yep, there it went again.
00:09:31I think one of the things that put it over the top, where CBS had to decide whether to
00:09:38put us on was something out of your actual life, which was...
00:09:42When I'm writing the pilot, I'm thinking, how do we convey exactly, in a short amount of
00:09:47time, how crazy Ray's parents are?
00:09:50And then this happened to me, where I sent my parents, I thought I was being nice, a gift
00:09:57of Fruit of the Month Club.
00:09:58Look, I appreciate the thought, Raymond, but please, don't ever send us any more food again,
00:10:05okay?
00:10:06Thanks.
00:10:06Thanks, Doug.
00:10:07Well, another box is coming next month.
00:10:10What?
00:10:11More pears?
00:10:12No.
00:10:13No, it's a different fruit every month.
00:10:16Every month?
00:10:17Yes, yes.
00:10:18That's why they call it Fruit of the Month Club.
00:10:20It's a club?
00:10:21Oh, my God.
00:10:22What am I going to do with all this fruit?
00:10:23Well, most people like it, Ma.
00:10:25You share it.
00:10:26Share it with all your friends.
00:10:27Which friends?
00:10:28I don't know.
00:10:29Lee and Stan.
00:10:30Lee and Stan buy their own fruit.
00:10:32Oh, why did you do this to me?
00:10:35Oh, my God.
00:10:36I can't talk to Stuart Fruit in the house.
00:10:39What do you think we are, invalids?
00:10:42We can't go out and get our own fruit?
00:10:45I'm trying to tell them.
00:10:46All right.
00:10:47I'm canceling the Fruit Club.
00:10:48Oh, good.
00:10:49Thank you, Raymond.
00:10:51And don't do that again.
00:10:52Like, we don't have enough problems.
00:11:01What I didn't realize and what I learned from doing that, from us doing that,
00:11:07oh, wait, your parents are all crazy, too.
00:11:10Yes.
00:11:11We get it all the time.
00:11:12People from all over parts of the world tell us, that's my mother.
00:11:15That's my father.
00:11:17That's my mother.
00:11:17We didn't know your mother.
00:11:18We were writing our mother.
00:11:19And we have so many favorite episodes.
00:11:21Some of the ones we're going to talk about tonight.
00:11:23I have one that just came to mind, and it's good since we're starting.
00:11:27You know, we did a flashback episode at the end of every season.
00:11:30And this was my favorite because it's how they met, meaning Ray and Debra.
00:11:36You know, it looks like I made too much food here if you're hungry.
00:11:39Oh, yeah?
00:11:43Yeah, you want some?
00:11:45All right, yeah.
00:11:46Wrap it up.
00:11:46I'll eat it in the truck.
00:11:52Can I ask you something?
00:11:54Yeah, sure.
00:11:56Were you making all that food for someone and they didn't show up?
00:12:01They showed up.
00:12:05Hey, you want something to drink?
00:12:07Yeah, yeah, well, let me get that.
00:12:08Okay, the glasses are right there.
00:12:09Okay.
00:12:10Price?
00:12:11Yeah.
00:12:11That'd be great.
00:12:14I like the round cubes with the holes in them.
00:12:30Those are my favorite kind of cubes.
00:12:31Are you okay?
00:12:38Yeah, I'm fine.
00:12:39Ah, you all right?
00:12:41Yeah.
00:12:46You're a good kisser.
00:12:48All right, you're in shock.
00:12:50You're both so great in that, and it's just so sweet to me, in addition to being funny.
00:12:59The flashback episodes were always...
00:13:01So fun.
00:13:02...mine fun to do.
00:13:03Look, I like all the episodes, but of course there's some we like more than others.
00:13:07And I have like a top five, and the one off the top of my head is called Talk to Your Daughter.
00:13:13So Talk to Your Daughter is about, at some point, having to have the talk with your child about the birds and the bees, you know?
00:13:23When a man and a woman love each other very much, they get married.
00:13:29And then, sometimes, they decide to make a baby.
00:13:34I know that the man and the woman have to do something, but why are we born?
00:13:39Why has God put us here?
00:13:41Why are we here, Daddy?
00:13:59Yeah, I heard you.
00:14:00I heard you.
00:14:03You don't want to talk about sex?
00:14:08What do you mean?
00:14:08Allie didn't want to talk about sex.
00:14:10She started asking questions about life.
00:14:12Why did God put us here?
00:14:13Crazy stuff like that.
00:14:16Wow.
00:14:17So what did you say?
00:14:17I told her we're here because heaven is crowded.
00:14:23You said heaven is crowded.
00:14:24I got ambushed!
00:14:26If you want to know what's in the Bible, why don't you talk to Father Hubley?
00:14:29Hey, that's right.
00:14:31You know what?
00:14:31It's his job to know these things.
00:14:33What, are you going to call him?
00:14:35Yeah.
00:14:35What are we putting the money in that basket for?
00:14:37Me and the family were just sitting around, and we had a quick question for you.
00:14:43What is the meaning of life?
00:14:47So if you could get back to us as soon as possible, we'd appreciate it, all right?
00:14:50I hate to admit it, but I'm guilty of, I didn't have that talk with my kids.
00:15:01Now I have 19 grandchildren.
00:15:05All right, they don't want to hear two old guys talk.
00:15:07They don't?
00:15:08Should we bring out some people for you?
00:15:10Yes, yes.
00:15:11When I got married, I didn't just get a husband.
00:15:25I got a whole freak show that set up their tent right across the street.
00:15:29Oh, you were open and considerate and willing to look at your own faults.
00:15:34You made me sick.
00:15:36Ray.
00:15:37Ray.
00:15:37Ray?
00:15:38Ray?
00:15:38Hello, Raymond.
00:15:40I do not have a drinking problem, sir.
00:15:42What I have is a mother-in-law problem.
00:15:46Woo!
00:15:51No.
00:15:51No.
00:15:52No.
00:15:52We're going to counseling.
00:15:53No!
00:15:54You meant what I said here today.
00:15:55I love you!
00:15:56I'm pregnant!
00:15:57I am not the yeller!
00:15:58You are the reason for the yeller!
00:16:00I have no idea what I have to put up with.
00:16:08Ladies and gentlemen, Patricia Heaton.
00:16:12Patty!
00:16:12Patty!
00:16:12Patty!
00:16:13Patty!
00:16:13Patty!
00:16:14Patty!
00:16:15Patty!
00:16:16Patty!
00:16:17Patty!
00:16:18Patty!
00:16:19Patty!
00:16:20Patty!
00:16:21Patty!
00:16:22Patty!
00:16:23Patty!
00:16:24Patty!
00:16:25Patty!
00:16:26Patty!
00:16:27Patty!
00:16:30Patty!
00:16:31Look at these two!
00:16:32I'm so happy.
00:16:33Do you know, I didn't say this, we saw 200 women before we found Patty Heaton.
00:16:40200.
00:16:41And when she came in, she just knocked it out of the park.
00:16:45I mean, you can talk about what that day was like.
00:16:48Well, I was going through, and I think why the show worked,
00:16:52we were all going through what the Barone family was going through in our lives.
00:16:55We all had kids. We all were newly married.
00:16:57Yes, and I had a three-year-old and a one-year-old in my life.
00:17:02Right.
00:17:03I had a babysitting issue when I was coming to the audition.
00:17:06I needed to get back.
00:17:07I was cutting out coupons for 50 cents off two packs of Ballpark Franks.
00:17:13And so I needed the gig.
00:17:15And I got there, and there was a waiting room of at least eight women.
00:17:19And I thought, I'm never going to get back in time for the babysitter.
00:17:21And so I went in and sat there, and I just needed to get this audition done.
00:17:27And there was a guy sitting in the corner, and I thought,
00:17:29maybe he can get me some water while we're waiting for Ray to come.
00:17:33It was him.
00:17:34And I didn't really have to do research, and I didn't really have to do acting,
00:17:37because it was what we were all dealing with in our marriages.
00:17:40And so, fortunately, we got to monetize that.
00:17:43Yeah. Yes.
00:17:45You were living the role.
00:17:46You were living the role.
00:17:48You know, when I need to talk to Ray about, like, my feelings or our children,
00:17:52I know I haven't until the commercial's over.
00:17:54That gives me 30 seconds.
00:17:56And if there's a girl in the commercial or a truck with big wheels or, God forbid, a monkey, forget it.
00:18:03I think it was the first show I'd worked on.
00:18:05I'd worked for a while on TV that really encouraged us to bring in our stories from home.
00:18:09Phil in the writer's room only half jokingly said, all right, we need two more stories.
00:18:13Anybody having a fight with their spouse?
00:18:15Phil's idea when he was running the show was, how can you write about real life if you can't live one?
00:18:21There's an episode of Raymond called The Tenth Anniversary,
00:18:23where Ray and Debra put in the VHS tape of their wedding on their 10th anniversary.
00:18:30And discovered that he's taped over with a Super Bowl.
00:18:35I did that, but it was my first anniversary.
00:18:41We put in our VHS tape and discovered that I had taped over our wedding with an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond.
00:18:48Where did our wedding go?
00:18:55It's just like the stories seem authentic.
00:18:57And whether it's more exaggerated than maybe it would have happened in real life,
00:19:00like, that kernel of truth, I think, comes through.
00:19:03Ten years, that's enough.
00:19:04It was such a pleasure to write for both of you.
00:19:14And there was one other.
00:19:18Phil's getting emotional.
00:19:20A little bit.
00:19:20Because it's a dream to wind up with people like this.
00:19:25If you're just a writer, you pray for someone to come along and give so much more beyond it.
00:19:31And to make it real.
00:19:32My favorite thing about the cast was how they all committed to the most silly thing as if it was life and death.
00:19:43And that made it so alive and real and relatable.
00:19:48And the two of you had the most spectacular chemistry.
00:19:51And I always said that Patty Heaton's the best wife on television.
00:19:54I think we're forgetting one little key element that really sold me on you during that first audition.
00:20:09That's how desperate I was to get the job.
00:20:11Well, they don't know what you're talking about.
00:20:13I kissed him.
00:20:13There was a part where it says she kisses her husband.
00:20:18And every other actress just kind of mimed it.
00:20:22For some reason, she did it.
00:20:24Nobody else.
00:20:26And when she walked out, I go, that's the one.
00:20:30Patty, do you have a favorite episode?
00:20:32Yes, there was the one where we went away for a weekend and we put the suitcase on the landing.
00:20:42We put it there and neither of us would take it up and empty it.
00:20:46And we keep waiting for the other person to do it.
00:20:49What are you doing?
00:20:51What?
00:20:53Just packing a soda for the road.
00:20:55Problem?
00:20:55That's how you're getting on the airplane.
00:20:59Yeah.
00:20:59Yeah, I'm traveling light.
00:21:01I'm traveling loose.
00:21:04What are you, a hobo?
00:21:09Why don't you take the suitcase?
00:21:11You know what?
00:21:12I don't need it.
00:21:16Okay, you know what?
00:21:23Yeah, good.
00:21:25You know what?
00:21:26I'm getting it.
00:21:28What's that supposed to mean?
00:21:30It means I'll get it.
00:21:33I'll be the one who got it.
00:21:36Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
00:21:40I will get it.
00:21:41Let the record show that I got it.
00:21:43You let go of this.
00:21:44You let go of this.
00:21:45You let go of this.
00:21:47Let go of this.
00:21:49Let go of this.
00:21:50Let go of this.
00:21:50Let go of this.
00:21:51Let go of this.
00:21:52Let go of this.
00:21:53I'll take it.
00:21:54No, you don't.
00:21:55No, you don't.
00:21:56I've got it.
00:21:57No, don't.
00:21:58I'm moving it.
00:21:59I'm the one moving it, everybody.
00:22:02Look at me.
00:22:04Don't let a suitcase filled with cheese be your big fork and spoon.
00:22:08This is all your fault.
00:22:28That's one of my favorite lines ever in the show, because that to me is marriage, especially
00:22:45a long marriage.
00:22:46Yes.
00:22:47So many people, and this is really, I think, what's not important about comedy, but every
00:22:55month at least, if not every week, somebody either on social media or if I run into them
00:23:01says, your show was the one thing that our family could laugh together when my father was
00:23:07sick.
00:23:08And it was his favorite thing that's been going on for 30 years.
00:23:11And so, you know, it just feels like we're able to do that.
00:23:15That's beautiful.
00:23:17We needed to cast Ray's brother.
00:23:21Should we bring him out soon?
00:23:23Trouble in paradise?
00:23:36Why would you want to hear me complain about Ray?
00:23:41Perhaps we haven't met.
00:23:43I'm Robert Barone.
00:23:45Hey, hey.
00:23:46Hey, Robert.
00:23:48Everybody loves Ray.
00:23:50Surprise, it's an iguana.
00:23:51I need to say something.
00:24:06No wife, no children.
00:24:09Pathetic.
00:24:13Thanks for the kind words.
00:24:17Brad Garrett, everybody.
00:24:21I'll come around.
00:24:31I'll come around.
00:24:32I'll come around.
00:24:38Phillip.
00:24:39Hey.
00:24:40Oh.
00:24:42I'm going to the chair over there.
00:24:44Oh, boy.
00:24:46Oh, boy.
00:24:48It is so great to meet you.
00:24:53Do you have any memories of coming in and meeting Ray?
00:24:57I remember auditioning when I read who Robert was.
00:25:01I just felt I knew this guy, you know?
00:25:04I was the youngest of three brothers growing up.
00:25:07And they were, you know, much more popular.
00:25:11And they had a lot more going for them.
00:25:13And I kind of felt like the kid that grew up under the sink, you know?
00:25:17So when I read it, I kind of felt like I knew who Robert was.
00:25:23Yes, Ray?
00:25:25How could you...
00:25:26You have to raise your hand.
00:25:26It's your show.
00:25:27How could you fit under the sink?
00:25:35We would write lines, jokes, and sometimes we didn't need them.
00:25:40Why?
00:25:41Because when we would cut to a face, they already said it with their look.
00:25:46And it was better than anything we could write.
00:25:49And the king of this was Brad.
00:25:52Yes.
00:25:52That's very sweet.
00:25:53Just beautiful.
00:25:54Any lovely stories you have from your days on the show?
00:25:58Not really.
00:25:59No?
00:26:01Many.
00:26:02You know what I think of a lot is the episode She's the One
00:26:05where the girl I was dating ate the fly.
00:26:09Oh, yes.
00:26:11And when you tried to tell me what you saw in the kitchen,
00:26:15that scene was so great.
00:26:17But there was a moment where you were...
00:26:20Yeah, I almost passed out.
00:26:22Tell me what you were screaming or you had some type of...
00:26:25Well, I saw her eat the fly.
00:26:26Yeah.
00:26:27And then you come in and you talk to Patty and say,
00:26:29I really think she's the one.
00:26:31And I say, she's not the one.
00:26:32Right?
00:26:33And I tell you she ate the fly.
00:26:35You don't believe me.
00:26:36And I tell the story.
00:26:37And again, all this pent up.
00:26:38And finally I end with, she took the fly.
00:26:40She put it in.
00:26:41And then I scream at, she ate it!
00:26:44And I hyperventilate it.
00:26:46And if you look very closely, you see me go, ooh, ooh.
00:26:49Because I almost, I felt like I was going to pass out.
00:26:52Who hyperventilates saying a line?
00:26:57Hey, you got him!
00:27:01Yeah, I guess I did.
00:27:03Wow, good hands.
00:27:04All right, um...
00:27:05Oh, it's okay.
00:27:06I got it.
00:27:06Okay, I'll be about to put this down.
00:27:08What the hell?
00:27:09Let's go.
00:27:10Let's go.
00:27:10Whoa.
00:27:11Oh, God.
00:27:13Oh, God.
00:27:15The fly.
00:27:31That was flying around?
00:27:33Angela killed it.
00:27:34It fell on the table.
00:27:36She put it in a napkin.
00:27:37And then she ate it!
00:27:51What?
00:27:52Commitment.
00:27:54Brad, was that your favorite or do you have a favorite?
00:27:57Boy, there's so many.
00:27:58I really loved Lucky Suit.
00:28:02Yeah.
00:28:02Where Robert has an interview to work with the FBI.
00:28:07So, as I was saying...
00:28:08Is this a joke?
00:28:11Excuse me?
00:28:12Dear FBI agent Garfield,
00:28:14I'm writing to ask for your understanding.
00:28:17You have an interview this morning with my son, Robert Barone.
00:28:20Oh, Robbie, you scared me.
00:28:42How did your interview go?
00:28:49Come here.
00:28:51Let me tell you about it.
00:28:55Didn't it go well?
00:28:57Oh, it was going okay.
00:28:59And then Agent Garfield read me a letter about Crazy Robert and his Lucky Suit.
00:29:03Mom, what did you do?
00:29:06She faxed the FBI a letter about how she ruined my Lucky Suit.
00:29:10I wasn't sure it went through.
00:29:12It's the first time I ever used a fax machine.
00:29:14Marie, why don't you go into the kitchen?
00:29:18Robert, how about you just stay here and maybe blink a few times?
00:29:21This is a good story.
00:29:32After one of my shows, this guy came up to me after the show,
00:29:36and it was really amazing.
00:29:39He was a veteran,
00:29:41and I remember that Phil, you and Ray would always send the DVDs to our troops
00:29:50when the show was on the air,
00:29:52and he gave me his retirement challenge coin,
00:29:57and he served from 1999 to 2020,
00:30:03and he said,
00:30:04you guys really helped when we needed the humor more than anything,
00:30:09and it really kept us buoyant in what we were going through every day.
00:30:16And, yeah.
00:30:19Yeah.
00:30:21It's an honor to be on this bus,
00:30:23and thanks for letting me on even though I was a giant.
00:30:27There's more people coming out.
00:30:29We'll be right back, I guess.
00:30:30Yeah.
00:30:35Here we go.
00:30:37Bye.
00:30:39This is something, huh?
00:30:50Yeah.
00:30:51Something.
00:30:53Something.
00:31:00It's something!
00:31:01It's something!
00:31:01It's something!
00:31:02And it still has the dent from where I picked Patty up and threw her into the thing.
00:31:32Very good.
00:31:34So there was someone else in that scene that I knew for a long time before we did the show.
00:31:40I saw her first in a play and I thought she was really funny.
00:31:44And then I married that girl.
00:31:46I might not be the best person to help.
00:31:48I've spent the last ten years looking for an engagement ring.
00:31:52Robert, this is my friend Amy. We used to work at the PR firm together.
00:31:55Hi!
00:31:56Hi, Ray.
00:31:57Here we go.
00:31:58Oh, look, this one looks like a heart.
00:32:00Stop your crying and get off your pity pot, Nancy.
00:32:04God.
00:32:05I keep forgetting what a freak show this family is until somebody new comes in and looks at us like that.
00:32:16Wait!
00:32:17Did your mother come over and make things worse, as usual?
00:32:24Here's Monica!
00:32:26Monica!
00:32:27Yes!
00:32:28Yes!
00:32:32Wow!
00:32:33I'll do a hug first.
00:32:34I'll do a hug first.
00:32:35A hug.
00:32:36I'll do a hug first.
00:32:37Hello, my darling.
00:32:40Oh
00:33:05Slightly different energy to the family right you know just being here
00:33:09is so incredible right i can't believe how everyone did the set like everybody backstage
00:33:16and you guys being here it's so overwhelming it's unbelievable talk about what about because
00:33:23first you were recurring right yes well first i don't didn't even know i'd be recurring can i
00:33:27tell you a little something yes i was pregnant with our daughter lily and i didn't know it
00:33:33i found out after so that first wait i didn't know that and flash forward too
00:33:39she just got married and she just got married
00:33:46we had a lot of babies on this show a lot of babies the moral is this show made us horny
00:33:53we were happy
00:33:57when did you officially know you were a regular it just started building and building and building
00:34:02and the robert and amy it really was you know i've had only a couple comedy partners in my life but
00:34:09this one and that writing to the to this couple was so perfect wasn't it it was great it was so
00:34:16fun and it was uh to then be with like one of the greatest comic teams of all time ray and deborah
00:34:24that's you guys yeah you were brilliant so it was really lucky do you have a favorite episode oh yeah
00:34:30it's all of them you mentioned there's so many favorite episodes the one that captures my heart
00:34:35is because my dear beloved georgia who i was very close with the georgia angle who played my mom

00:35:08robert was smoking i wasn't i wasn't smell him come here
00:35:16oh my god
00:35:18do you know what he's been doing smelling
00:35:27it wasn't lying it was more like she was just letting off steam so you don't let it out on the
00:35:32person you love you know like ray he has to drive around the block a few times every night listening
00:35:39to the radio before he goes home to face deborah
00:35:55are you crazy
00:35:59when i'm angry at my cat miss puss sometimes i'll sneak up behind her and bark like a dog
00:36:05i like to blow up fireworks
00:36:16pat
00:36:20i thought since it wasn't a secret anymore
00:36:22she was just in heaven and she always talked to everyone about the writing on this show working
00:36:42with phil for years and years and years after so beautiful thank you for you know what we're so lucky
00:36:49to work with these comedy legends that we idolized you know we stand on the shoulders of the great
00:36:54people that came before us obviously people have passed
00:36:59and uh we've seen a lot of clips of our our mom and dad on the show but when we come back we'll talk
00:37:04about them
00:37:24so let's talk about uh the parents
00:37:29for you and me uh uh it it it it's very personal because they were so based on our parents yeah the
00:37:38mother was more you i mean the mother was and the dad was more you maybe i used to say everything
00:37:43you saw peter do my father probably did in real life without pants on
00:37:51but i remember just talking about peter during the pilot episode so now i'm a i'm a young guy who just got
00:37:58fired from news radio and here i am again uh attempting a show and i'm nervous and peter is
00:38:05the great peter boyle or this iconic movie guy and he's an imposing figure i had didn't know then
00:38:12how sweet he really was and and i hadn't really had a conversation with peter and our paths were
00:38:17crossing and i swear to god it must have been right here and he just stops me and i don't we
00:38:22i haven't said anything to him he just stops me and i guess he could tell he could tell that i was
00:38:27a little nervous and he just looks and he goes i remember the words he just goes it's just like
00:38:33water just let it flow and he and then he leaves and at that time i'm like what does that mean
00:38:42and and even though as an actor i didn't know what exactly what that meant but i do now
00:38:47just the gesture the gesture of him reaching out to me it's everything yeah it's everything yeah
00:38:57beautiful anyway go ahead talk about
00:39:01we saw a hundred ladies for the part they all read with that fruit of the month scene
00:39:07no one came close to doris roberts no one she was what was in my head and in my life
00:39:17and and was was so beyond even my my real mother used to say you know it is a little exaggerated
00:39:29but you never saw that with doris because she was always spot on she was always a hundred percent
00:39:35believable peter too again i keep reiterating the same thing we could be the best writers in the
00:39:42world it wouldn't matter if we didn't have these people and peter boyle and doris roberts
00:39:50let me show you something let me show you something
00:40:00marie oh well okay oh frank this is wonderful you dumb bastard
00:40:12what write it out you put a stop to this now all right dad let me ask you
00:40:19she's in a bad mood what two three days tops before you know it what used to be a bad mood
00:40:26now takes over and becomes her only mood
00:40:31and then well then you become like me
00:40:36when not a day goes by that i don't wish there was a comet screaming towards earth to bring me sweet
00:40:42relief
00:40:54that's going to need another coat
00:40:58did you say that you like amy more than deborah
00:41:02i know i know you're not saying it now
00:41:15but did you say it ever
00:41:17what what if i told you that we have a tape of you saying it ma
00:41:34give me the tape
00:41:37what we do in our bedroom is our own business and i prefer not to be known as the whore of lenbrook

00:43:26thank you ladies and gentlemen my wife thinks i'm in the bathroom
00:43:39oh my god
00:43:53i think we all have special memories of each one of them you know doris could drink everybody under the table
00:44:05champagne that was her choice pretty good never stopped working right never stopped working on hiatuses
00:44:11yeah always working taking acting classes until she was directing plays 90. yes and peter was
00:44:19pretty much the opposite of that guy he was a kind of a renaissance man yes he wasn't really like that
00:44:27character two things about him you may not know he studied to be a monk
00:44:33yes i asked him what what made you give it up he said there weren't enough girls there
00:44:36and best man at his wedding was john lennon yeah yeah how about that as a matter of fact the girl he married
00:44:48is here tonight lorraine boyle is sitting right up there
00:45:00well i you know it's it's funny i remember when peter boyle was cast and and we were like so excited
00:45:08because we're going to be able to play every week with this legend and and ray went uh you know i think
00:45:15it's so fitting that the guy who's playing your dad was young frankenstein
00:45:23yeah yeah well they became our parents in in more ways than one on the show yes to doris and peter
00:45:30yes
00:45:54hey good yeah yeah good
00:46:01even better the second time now that my tongue's not scared
00:46:06everything happened over food there was so much food on the show and it just sort of taught you that
00:46:11like lessons are learned and arguments are made when you're sitting down to eat you learn a lot
00:46:18about each other you should ask deborah how she makes this
00:46:20i should ask deborah i should ask deborah give me that
00:46:35food is you know it's family gathering around the table just like love you better not have started
00:46:50that cake that cake is for all of us i'm coming over food is love because food is bringing people
00:47:01together and so yeah we hit it uh all the time a man needs chicken food is everything and that's because
00:47:10that's phil's obsession for phil food was the most important thing and it's the great connector
00:47:15we uh actually had a lot to eat on the plane so off we go to italy and of course the character of ray
00:47:24barone is miserable hey this is the spanish steps where's the spanish elevator but i remember this one
00:47:32moment pizza thank you and that piece of pizza when he put it in his mouth wow it's okay ray has
00:47:43this epiphany about everything like the best pizza i ever had man he realizes the great thing which is
00:47:49his family the culture the people all those things are actually truly beautiful and he's been missing them
00:47:57the whole episode look we're in the kitchen uh food was a very important part of the show uh i think
00:48:08marie held sway over the entire family because she was a great cook and a who wasn't
00:48:14but we should talk about our children daddy daddy catch me
00:48:27yeah everybody say cavities
00:48:32mommy that man's smoking

00:49:47i mean i don't know i it just felt like what we were supposed to do i don't think we understood
00:49:53right the how impactful the show was or how impactful what we were doing was so yeah
00:49:59i would get upset that you know i couldn't be in the school play
00:50:02yeah but but looking back you know i wouldn't change anything about it
00:50:06that's so great to hear it's so good to see you guys it really is tell us what you're doing now
00:50:11i just had a baby yeah

00:50:30we had lots of candy but you were also i want to say fantastic
00:50:36we were on set with some of the most amazing comedic actors
00:50:39in the world so it was uh you know we were learning from everybody how to do it and that's
00:50:45that's the only reason that we were you know any good at it i think yeah and i definitely feel
00:50:49like i carried that experience through my whole life now i i try to bring that that kind of comedy
00:50:54with me wherever i go do you have a favorite episode you know it's funny at my i'm not in my
00:51:00favorite episode uh now as an adult as i've been watching it back i found there's so many more
00:51:05adult things that i didn't realize when i was a kid and uh my favorite episode is marie's statue
00:51:12oh i give you this
00:51:20isn't it a bit too lady-like
00:51:23great you see oh now i do thank you it looks like something though what does it look like
00:51:37you can get close you can even touch it i'm fine
00:51:46i gotta tell you i i don't know what the hell this is

00:51:59up the sculpture
00:52:01you
00:52:04forgive me but is that not a sculptor of
00:52:10what
00:52:17oh my god i'm a lesbian
00:52:19but what happened to the sculpture i think it was in doris's backyard
00:52:32i think her grandkids used it as a slide
00:52:41that's wrong
00:52:42sullivan you've got one oh i've got i've got plenty of good memories you know playing tag in the bleachers
00:52:49and and you know the prop room but i think i'm a sucker for a happy ending and the final scene
00:52:54with everybody gathered around the table has got to be my favorite memory like we are now
00:52:59hey what do you got there french toast no no no no don't worry i'll make something
00:53:03yay
00:53:07move out of the way thank you
00:53:12have some food in the meantime
00:53:13oh
00:53:14so much great so much great right
00:53:16i think it's getting a little too crowded in here
00:53:19yeah it is you know what we need a bigger table yes all right who would like some chocolate chip
00:53:26pancakes
00:53:27the philosophy of we need a bigger table
00:53:38is is everything to me
00:53:40you know the the family is a microcosm of your families we hope and and of wherever you live
00:53:48and our country and the world we need a bigger table so that that's the idea that's why i wanted
00:53:54it to be the last thing
00:54:01can we mention also
00:54:03sawyer yeah so sawyer of course is no longer with us and we miss him
00:54:08and he just like you are just this bright energy light
00:54:13none of us really expected what happened
00:54:16but uh you know i i try to think about the the good moments and often times that's here on the set
00:54:22i just think it's so important any conversation that we're having about sawyer we're very passionate
00:54:27in our family about suicide prevention it is the second leading cause of death between the ages of
00:54:3318 to 25 but 90 of people who seek treatment are cured and so many of the messages that we get are
00:54:42people saying i'm i'm so grateful to have heard about your brother he saved my life is there a
00:54:47a organization that you work with on behalf of sawyer where people could reach out to you we work with
00:54:54the national suicide prevention hotline that's our main our main place okay yeah but you know people can
00:55:01grab a sawyer t-shirt we do t-shirts every year and and all of the proceeds go there great yeah
00:55:08you're not getting off don't push me
00:55:29i almost didn't know how lucky i was working with amazing actors
00:55:38that allowed you then to take these big swings with physical comedy
00:55:45and then the actors just so gifted
00:55:49rovin let me tell you what they did okay
00:56:00oh i am tired sweetness
00:56:02oh yeah oh oh baby does that feel good
00:56:09if deborah has to give him permission to make more decisions and then it has to spectacularly end
00:56:33badly deborah's going all nutty on me over here but what else is new that means ray's gotta i don't know
00:56:38like set the kitchen on fire
00:56:51the laugh inside the studio was like nothing i ever heard
00:56:57fire fire in the fire famous one was uh patty dealing with that thanksgiving turkey
00:57:05and that was all her huh yeah deborah is wrestling with a turkey that keeps falling and you can write
00:57:12that on the page it just looks like an action line
00:57:14and then when patty heaton does it you look at the writers around you and go look how good we are
00:57:31okay yes ma'am hi my question for you is do you guys have a favorite line and if so can you reenact it
00:57:39for us now favorite line one favorite line i have one yes what did you do
00:57:56very well done i i have a favorite line it wasn't i didn't say it but it was said to me
00:58:08and it was from nobody on here it was from a day character who was in a hospital bed and i said
00:58:14something i know it and she looked at me and went you tricky tricky white boy
00:58:25you want to get better you got to take your pills
00:58:29what has happened to you in real life since the show's ended that you thought to yourself that
00:58:45would make a really great episode yeah our friend lou schneider who's one of the great writers
00:58:50on the show he he tells a story about how he was on vacation with the family and he dropped his
00:58:58keys down the elevator shaft in right in the crack of the elevator door and he was freaking out because
00:59:05it's the car keys the house keys everything and he was really going nuts and his wife said this is
00:59:12great maybe you could use it on the show you know that this we already did the episode where ray loses
00:59:19his ring in the in the in the thing so this is not good for the show this is just something that happened
00:59:30hey guys my question is actually for brad garrett when judy took you to the dance club yes you have
00:59:36this amazing iconic dance i wanted to ask if we can recreate it right now and boogie down a little
00:59:40i'll
00:59:46you're in for it come on down
00:59:50oh
01:00:02oh
01:00:08Go Robert!
01:00:10Go Robert!
01:00:12Go Robert!
01:00:14Go Robert!
01:00:16Woo!
01:00:18Everybody win!
01:00:20That's great.
01:00:22That is good.
01:00:24That is good.
01:00:26When Raymond left for Hollywood, me and my brother Bobby decided to put a little note in his suitcase.
01:00:42We were going to miss him, you know?
01:00:44And I didn't hear anything, and neither did my brother Robert, for nine years.
01:00:49I didn't know if he read it.
01:00:51And then the final show comes, and it was very, very dramatic and, you know, emotional.
01:00:59And in his speech, he says, I want to read something.
01:01:05This is a little note that my brother, both my brothers gave me when I went to D.F. in New York.
01:01:12I'm saying, oh my God, you saved it?
01:01:15They snuck this into my luggage.
01:01:18What I wrote to him was, I hope you remember this verse.
01:01:23What does it profit a man?
01:01:25He gains the whole world, but loses his soul.
01:01:30He had tears in his eyes, and he goes, I hope I did that, God.
01:01:36And it was very moving, and I think he did.
01:01:39I think God would be very happy with him.
01:01:41Thank you so much for being with us tonight.
01:01:49We're so thrilled to be with you.
01:01:51We owe everything to you guys.
01:01:52You know, when we started, it was a show about a family, four families.
01:01:57And after a little while, it was being made by a family.
01:02:00What you don't see are all the people that really made the show with us, some of whom we haven't seen since we went off the air.
01:02:10So if we could, let's bring most of them out.
01:02:14Nice Canada.
01:02:15Woo-hoo!
01:02:21Thank you!
01:02:22I finally got the joke.
01:02:25I see.
01:02:28Thank you, man.
01:02:29I love you, man.
01:02:33It's so good!
01:02:35It's so good.
01:02:37Thank you, man.
01:02:39Yeah, you, man.
01:02:41Now, one little more thing we want to share with the audience.
01:02:51It's kind of like a gag reel, so we want to share that with you
01:02:54and with everybody who made the show.
01:02:58What? What's wrong? What happened?
01:03:03You kicked me.
01:03:07I did?
01:03:07Oh, right in the garden of good and evil.
01:03:12Right in Geppetto's workshop.
01:03:15Right in Granny's apples.
01:03:17Right in the Hard Rock Cafe.
01:03:20You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:03:23Wherever it was, I'll bet it was dark.
01:03:25I'm just a simple man who tried to make a difference.
01:03:42I still put my pants on one leg at a time.
01:03:46Yeah, but you should stop when they reach your nipples.
01:03:48You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:04:01A little shop of horrors.
01:04:05Okay.
01:04:09Come on, man.
01:04:11Now, all that remains is the issue of if we should be granted guardianship
01:04:15in the event that both of you die at the same time.
01:04:18Whoa, slow down.
01:04:19We're still trying to have an orgasm at the same time.
01:04:20No.
01:04:31You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:04:36Goldens?
01:04:37Hey, Marie, I knew you named them, but I didn't know you fed them.
01:04:53It's like I've entered a world where ladies want Ray.
01:04:57Ray Bird.
01:04:57Ray Bird.
01:04:58Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:04:59Ray Bird.
01:04:59Ray Bird.
01:05:00You know what?
01:05:01With your penis and my money, we're unstoppable.
01:05:07You better have a lot of money.
01:05:14Well, to be honest, Deborah, it's not a style I'd ever wear.
01:05:20Nice try, though.
01:05:23Put it on.
01:05:24Thank you, everybody.
01:05:35You want to say goodbye?
01:05:35I do.
01:05:36I want to say...
01:05:37I want to say to...
01:05:40to all of you, and to all of you,
01:05:43I used to say this to Ray all the time,
01:05:47thanks for the good life.
01:05:49Yeah.
01:05:50And we wish the same to all of you.
01:05:52Thank you, everybody.
01:05:53Thank you, everybody.
