00:00back on the road in our trusty traveling auction house on the hunt for treasures hidden in homes
00:07all across britain oh yes finding value in those overlooked objects auction supremos
00:14izzy barma getting excited james broad and brianie harford wow the star lot of the day
00:21and transforming has-beens into must-haves restorers jj charmers
00:26robin johnson lauren wood and safakir brilliant our mission beautiful to give those unloved and
00:35forgotten gems a new lease of life and make their owners some much needed money you've got three to
00:42four thousand everything we find and fix will go under our gavel as we bring our auctions to you
00:49four thousand one hundred pounds wow you know what we say have gavel will travel
00:58use them muscles use those muscles there we go that's a workout that auctioneer jb and restorer
01:14robin are cruising into sunny chelmsford all set for another day of searching and sprucing
01:20this is essex mate this is the land of the wheeler dealer my friends yeah we could be dull boy and
01:27robney give me your best impression of an essence geezer all right mate how's it going all right
01:31that's pretty good actually yeah unfortunately that's how i talk normally hoping our two cheeky
01:38chaps can help are peter and rosemary whose home has become overrun with collectibles built up
01:44over years that's that one with that picture on the back yeah i've seen anything like that before
01:51peter and rosemary met over 50 years ago since then they've had two sons stewart and chris and built
01:59their lives centered around family we've got some really happy memories theme parks and bringing them
02:06up playing ball games always used to go out weekends take them down the coast but 12 months ago everything
02:14took a heartbreaking turn pete was diagnosed with grade stage four bowel cancer secondary lung cancer
02:23it's a very bad spot when something like that happens and you do get very upset
02:33you had the devastating news last year last september that they only had three months to live
02:39sunday sundays i do feel that the end is near no but i'll plod along now a year after his diagnosis peter's
02:53living each day to its fullest supported by his family with my illness i know i haven't got long
03:03but i don't know how long if i wake up in the morning i'm on the winner
03:08well jb our main aim today is just to take the pressure off so they can really enjoy the time they've got
03:18left together well if there's anyone to help take the weight off it's you two and with peter's
03:26resilience driving the family forward they're ready to face the future and start clearing their collections
03:32we've inherited stuff from departed parents and we've just got things that we need cleared
03:40because at the moment i'm really worried that that ceilings can give way if we put any more up there
03:45perfect never fear robin and jb are on the case ready ready ready
03:52if only your restoration was good as your knocks oh you check hello come in oh thank you after you
04:01robin elders first oh he's a one in it i'll say so you must be peter nice to meet you it's nice to
04:09meet you too we obviously know what you're you've been going through and we want to do our best for
04:13so what's the plan then that you can go anywhere in the house that we'll be pottering in the garden
04:17if you want us right we'll see you later thank you thank you with a jam-packed house plus a loft
04:23a garage and even a garden shed jb and robin have one day to find items for our auction
04:30lots of garden tools robin would love it robin's after faded gems needing some tlc
04:37while jb's keeping an eye out for those hidden treasures the sort of finds that could really shine
04:43auction starting in the garage what a collection swarovski crystals all box as well which makes
04:52these a little bit more valuable quite often they're unboxed and the boxes get thrown away but now these
04:57make ideal gifts for someone because they have got the original boxes oh wow look at that that is
05:04beautiful a little hummingbird and it is in absolutely perfect condition you have the frosted glass to the
05:10base and there's no damage whatsoever before in the 90s and early 2000s people loved collecting bits
05:17and pieces like this and displaying them quite proudly but now that fashion's died off a little bit so it
05:22has affected the value i think we've easily got two lots here collectively probably looking around two to
05:28400 at auction but that's not a bad find for a garage see what else we've got split into two lots to maximize
05:35their value these are a great start and robin's on the hunt for his first find too what are we here
05:43never have so many owed so much to so few winston churchill that is a lovely plaque although the veneer in the corner of the frame
05:55is missing can probably get that fixed back up i wonder though is it worth anything i'd imagine
06:02it probably is it's a it's a nice plaque bronze or potentially copper but i think probably bronze
06:10i know a man who'll know if that's worth anything jb
06:13jb hello found this oh it's spitfire it is it's interesting isn't it it's like a commemorative
06:25raf plaque isn't it and it's got the winston churchill quote as well so it's like a copper relief isn't it
06:31and then is this a could be either walnut or mahogany veneer right difficult to tell with the patina that's on it
06:37and i'm assuming this is the issue yeah i can fix it but is it worth anything yeah definitely it's gonna
06:44have a lot of military interest and it's just a nice decorative piece isn't it and obviously you've got
06:48the iconic spitfire on there as well don't clean it though i don't want you going out here with the
06:54brasso how easy is that to fix well now i don't have to clean it it'd be an easy fix if we had the
07:01piece like super easy but to match in a bit of an ear or potentially replace this whole side it's
07:07quite a big job actually it's definitely worth doing i think as it is it's probably maybe 20 to 40 30 to
07:1250 but if you can replace this bit of an air and clean up the frame i think this could fly at auction
07:17and fetch 50 to 80. i'm here all day right i'm gonna carry on rummaging leave the jokes to me as jb digs
07:25around what a great pair of legs robin's busy setting up his al fresco workshop on the driveway
07:33turning this quiet suburban street into a full-on restoration hq oi oi open for business this spitfire
07:42plaque is really rather nice but the veneer around the frame on the outside has definitely seen better
07:48days what i'm looking for to repair that is something that the ideal the unicorn would be
07:54same color same grain pattern same sort of thickness it's never going to happen the perfect
08:00unicorn match may not exist but fingers crossed one of these veneer offcuts will make a suitable
08:06substitute this one is really quite close to the color a little bit lighter it's got a few black bits
08:16running through and i'm wondering if with a little bit of stain it might be a good match
08:22finding the correct color is crucial to get the plaque auction ready robin's testing out different
08:28stains on a variety of offcuts building up layers to find the one that's just right
08:35that's pretty close and that is a mix of mahogany veneer with a couple of different stains on it one
08:42stain as a base coat and then another stain as a top coat just to get the color match just right so
08:49i can cut a bit of veneer glue it in wait for it to set and then start working the staining magic
08:56while our man with a plan gets sticking back in the garage jb's on the hunt for some more hidden gems
09:02what have we got here then oh beautiful little japanese mejai cabinet but it is looking a little
09:15tired this kadanzu cabinet dates from the japanese meiji period spanning the late 19th and early 20th
09:22centuries a time when japan was opening up to the west and showcasing its artistry cabinets like these
09:29were often decorated with inlay or gilt bronze mounts they combined traditional craftsmanship with
09:35western taste for elaborate furniture and this one was a gift to rosemary when she was just seven years
09:42old from her grandmother it's got all this beautiful marks of detail here all the inlights so you've got
09:47ebony's you've got burr walnut you've got oak in there and then on the doors usually you have
09:54mother of pearl detail as well and to be fair quite often the mother of pearl is missing on these which
09:59would be a bit of a nightmare for robin but actually these look quite good i'm a bit scared
10:05to pull it out because it literally is all in pieces this is definitely a robin task because in
10:13that condition in auction you're probably only looking at maybe 20 to 40 but if robin can work
10:19his magic on this which i'm sure he can i could see that doing easily 60 to 100 so it'll easily double
10:24its value but i've got to try and get it to him without it falling apart too much careful steady
10:39oh hello hello i've heard you love jigsaws that's not a jigsaw
10:44have a look oh you're saying it's a jigsaw because it's in loads of pieces yeah i mean
10:51isn't it beautiful it is oh did you hear that i put that down something dropped off yeah it's in quite
10:57a lot of pieces so it's not going to be an easy restoration i think if you can get all this back
11:03together looking nice and shiny i think there's 6200 there a bit of value in it then oh dear yeah it's
11:11lovely pearl inlay yeah it is missing a few bits here but you can kind of expect that so i think
11:17if you can get it structurally fine and all cleaned up and looking pretty then i think we're on to a
11:22winner okay cool leave it with me good luck enjoy cheers looks like you've got a bit of a puzzle to
11:30solve there robin jb has bought me what is almost a cabinet it needs quite a lot of repair but if anyone
11:40can make this little cabinet shine it's you robin where this old glue is quite big and bobbly it will
11:46create a gap between this piece of wood and whatever piece of wood i'm going to glue next to it so with
11:52my fingers i'm just picking off the worst of it hmm rather your nails than mine i don't want to sand
11:58this just in case i scratch this lovely lacquered edge drumming up a bit of business for a nail
12:03technician somewhere but i'm not really that fast because mine are pretty small and pretty ropey but
12:09i guess don't try this at home if you've got gels on with the old glue removed robin can start
12:14securing the top of the cabinet a healthy amount of pva on the only faces that are actually going
12:20to be in contact which is this two sides clamps on tight you don't want this turning into a giant
12:28jigsaw again okay i'll leave that to dry and then that will be the lid fixed on too then we're nearly
12:36there with uh with all the structural stuff hello how you doing i'm good how are you i'm fine thanks
12:42but you've got a quite a job here haven't you i'm not there yet but it's got a back on it it's got a
12:47lid on it yeah we should smell that one yeah which is more than it had when you picked it up yeah i mean
12:52look even if it doesn't go for loads saving it from going in the skip i suppose yeah exactly fingers
12:57cross jb can work his magic and get a few quid for it yeah be really good and whilst some things can
13:04be saved and restored for the past 12 months since peter's cancer diagnosis rosemary has been holding
13:11the family together through an incredibly difficult time i'm okay yeah yeah i mean come as a bit of a
13:17shock it did because we didn't know anything about it until he went to the doctors last year so they
13:24said right okay we need you to have some tests only to find out that he got lung cancer so we thought
13:30that was it but that's not where his primary cancer is he's got stage 4 bowel cancer so he started on
13:37chemo but because he's diabetic it didn't work he couldn't cope with it they said sorry it's terminal
13:44and you've got three months to live and that was september after a difficult year peter and rosemary
13:50are making the most of the precious time they have left and dream of one final family holiday
13:57we want to cherish and make the most of every moment that we've got together for the obvious
14:01reason that we don't know how long we've got and we've accumulated so much stuff with the help of
14:06robin and jb we're hoping to raise some money so that we can have a trip together maybe 500 pounds that
14:13would certainly be okay we're not greedy we just want to trip away and a holiday that we remember just
14:19going away for a few days just to sit down buy a boat somewhere and relax and not have the four
14:29walls to stare at yeah so the plan is then when me and jb raise all this money for you you're going to
14:39spend it on away days yeah it'd be really helpful i hope you get on all right me too hopefully fix me
14:44too i can definitely fix it but whether it'll look as good as it look when you were giving it as a
14:48seven-year-old i don't know i'll try my hardest it's gonna be fantastic i'll let you get on because
14:53you're doing a brilliant job thank you and while robin works away on the japanese meiji cabinet
14:59jb's search is hitting new heights oh that's a rickety ladder oh it's boiling up here i hope it's
15:07worth it match boxes i used to have so many of these as a kid and i used to have a yellow
15:14suitcase that's similar to these actually but typical my mum sold them all at a car boot but
15:20there's a really nice collection here amongst this box of toy cars trucks and aeroplanes are several by
15:27matchbox introduced to the uk in the early 1950s they took their name from the size of the original
15:33packaging the size of real matchboxes they're very much play-worn condition so they are a little bit
15:41tatty how you'd expect them to be but still there's a good collection of matchbox there with the cases as
15:46well i would split these two lots so we've got 30 to 50 on the larger diecast and then the collection
15:51matchbox here with the cases another 30 to 50 so that is a really good find see what else we can
15:57get a top-notch find indeed great work jp what else is up there in the attic look at that four boxes of
16:06miniatures me and robin could have a real party with this lot what a collection that is it looks like
16:12it's mainly scotch whiskey there is a few bourbons in there as well there must be two to 250 so i
16:20imagine everywhere he went he always bought a little miniature a lot of people do collect these
16:26miniatures they're kind of like thimbles were people used to buy them whenever they went and
16:29it will remind them of a memory that they had but to be honest you've got some quite aged whiskies here
16:34so you could find one that's particularly rare and a collector would go mad for them but as a collection
16:40i would say 100 to 150 but there might just be one in there which catches the eye of a collector
16:46a solid collection let's hope there's a connoisseur in the auction room meanwhile
16:51robin's turned his attention back to fixing the veneer on the battle of britain commemorative plaque
16:59with the glue set and the stain color matched he's giving the frame that extra sparkle for auction
17:05now i'm using a bit of polish on there because the polish on this rest of the frame is really quite
17:11bad so i'm just giving it just a little coat just a little freshen up because then the rest of it
17:19kind of be in keeping you know that veneer repair has gone really well and the finish has taken to it
17:24lovely that looks ace ready for auction thanks to your handiwork the battle of britain commemorative
17:32plaque could now fetch between 50 and 80 pounds well done robin
17:40same playstation i had one of these as a kid i also had the really cool small one as well
17:45and a basket full of playstation games as well i love it and we've also got sega games as well
17:54this is amazing this is literally my childhood in a box i want to take a closer look into it
18:02there's so many games in here playstation one games have had such a resurgence because everyone's
18:07buying back things they used to play as a kid and in a market driven by nostalgia these are a great
18:12find hello what have you got there a basket of amazingness oh wow it's got my childhood in a
18:19basket i think well i'm guessing these are probably your son's collection are they yes they are yeah so
18:24he still plays the soccer but he plays it on the main computer now really yeah i love that and how old
18:29are your sons 42 and 40. brilliant brilliant so you remember them as kids playing both the playstation
18:35and the sega yeah i especially remember sonic because i was always challenged to play sonic and i always lost
18:40these games do help i mean a lot of parents moan that their kids are always playing on the computers
18:47but what they've got to see is what it does to the brain because they've got to think and calculate and
18:52also it's good for the coordination because rich stuart with his dyspraxia they said he wouldn't be able
18:56to do anything but yeah he's diagnosed with dyspraxia i guess when he was about two or three
19:02dyspraxia is a condition affecting coordination and motor skills impacting movement balance and sometimes speech
19:11they forecast the fact that he would not be able to do anything he wouldn't be able to speak
19:16he needed a lot of help and we managed to get him to speak we used a talking teddy bear and he went
19:23to speech therapist as well and occupational therapies and while stuart faced the challenges
19:29of dyspraxia their eldest son chris was born with a serious heart condition doctors feared he wouldn't
19:35live past childhood i'm proud of the way that boys are coping we pull each other together we make sure
19:42that each other is okay we also are there for each other and we always have been and we always will be
19:48and how's your son doing now he's really doing well because he's lived all over the country he's
19:54worked in finance and the eldest one that's 42 is a senior scientist so both of them are absolutely
20:00fantastic you must be so proud to see where they both are now oh yes with the prognosis is that we've
20:06had for all of us basically and it's been pretty awful you're all amazing you really are my son does
20:13running he's run marathons he's actually got medals for marathons and we've gone all over the country
20:18from doing 10ks to full marathons that's amazing what a credit to you both as parents i think it's
20:25amazing what you've done and you must be super proud of your sons i am really proud yeah of what they've
20:30done what they've achieved yes definitely would you be happy for these to be sold as far as i know
20:35yes because i think in terms of value the sony playstation and the games is one lot and i think
20:39you'd be looking at around 50 to 80. and with that estimate the holiday fund has just leveled up
20:46i've been under the bed for years so i'm not sure they're gonna miss them and you deserve a good
20:51holiday so let's do our best with these i'm happy that you said we can sell them yeah but i've still
20:56got loads to do so i'm gonna leave you to it and i'm gonna have a look around every room
21:00good luck jb and robin are only just hitting their stride jb has already uncovered the collection of
21:07toy cars trucks and aeroplanes the swarovski crystal ornaments and the collection of miniature bottles
21:12of whiskey and bourbon while robin has restored the battle of britain commemorative plaque and is
21:17still working on the japanese meiji cabinet and on top of that jb has discovered a meccano building set
21:24and it's very very intricate you've got all these little cogs here as well so it took some real
21:31patience to do and a collection of cameras and accessories i mean the good thing is is a collection
21:36that's ready to go for someone someone's starting out in photography i think this is a really good
21:41collection that you've got that's a great start anywhere else to search yeah i wondered when you'd find
21:48the shed oh this is cool i wonder wow look at this plumb bob nice one as well
22:00oh that's pretty spirit level a lovely ornate one i'm sure it is but can it go to auction i could have
22:09put money on you being there yeah yeah found a really nice toolbox it's beautiful the plumb bob tells me
22:14maybe it's a plumber's toolbox yeah it's got a little lift out compartment some nice tools in there
22:20as well you could probably do two separate lots with the tools and then the box on its own i'd say
22:24well i'll give the box a clean up and i'll probably clean up a few of the tools as well it'll look good
22:28actually to be honest it's a good seller because it's light as well so it's not light i think doing
22:35the doing the tools in the box separate is a good thing you could maybe carry the tools out and i'll take
22:39the box no i've got stuff to do in the house so i'll um yeah i'll leave you to it of course enjoy
22:43see you later sorry robin with rooms still to explore in the house it looks like you're on your
22:50own while jb continues his search inside robin's making a start on the pine toolbox and the tools
22:57hoping that his craftsmanship can hammer up a good price at the auction i knew when i come to a
23:03six i'd end up getting fake tan all over myself somehow there we go a bit of dark wax fake tan
23:10the way that i apply wax is get it on a cloth get a load on there and apply it in the same
23:15direction that the grain is running go quite liberal get a load on there work it into that grain back and
23:22forth wood is a bit like a sponge and wax is like nourishment seeps in wood soaks it up and it creates a
23:32really nice protective layer as well now the chest has had a really generous coat of wax all over i'm
23:37going to fold my cloth to a clean bit and give it a buff gives it a little bit of shine a little bit
23:43of polish and takes that waxy feel away a little bit so it's nice and smooth lovely these tools are in
23:52actually really nice nice used condition really used so really all they need is a little dust off
24:00a slightly waxy cloth give them a little bit of luster there we go a little cleaning and tidy up
24:09really just looking for all those tools i really hope they go to a good home and i hope they raise
24:13an awful lot of money they deserve to that's another couple of lots ready for the next chapter
24:22with the toolbox estimated at 30 to 40 pounds and the tools at 50 to 100 pounds hopefully that's
24:29another step towards peter and rosemary's family getaway but jb's not done yet he's doing his best
24:36to help that holiday kitty comic and curious cats oh they're a bit of fun aren't they there's about
24:45what have we got in here we've got one two three four boxed and one unboxed as well and these are by
24:51border fine arts yeah so they're limited edition as well so this is 179 of 950 so only 950 of these
24:58were made does make them a little bit more valuable border fine arts was founded in 1974 in langham scotland
25:05earning a reputation for beautifully hand-painted figurines of wildlife and rural life artist linda
25:12jane smith dreamed up the whimsical comic and curious cats which launched in the early 2000s
25:19collectors love spotting the charming details in these resin figures some even include a cheeky little mouse
25:25they are really really well detailed and they're just a bit of fun so anyone who loves cats who
25:32wouldn't want that on their mantle i mean there's five of them four with boxes and there's more four
25:40extra models tucked away bringing the collection up to nine with an estimate of two to four hundred
25:46pounds they are a fantastic addition to the auction catalogue outside the glue has dried on the japanese
25:53meiji cabinet that feels really good really solid now however i need to work out there's only two pins
26:02holding these hinges in so really i need to fix these in with some more pins
26:14what i wouldn't give for a little pin hammer right now unfortunately there's not one in the van so
26:19i'm using the wrong hammer for the job but the wrong tool used in the right way sometimes works
26:27careful robin one wrong blow without hammer and you might have a whole new jigsaw puzzle to work on
26:33now i'm putting these drawers back in it's presented to me this way round that drawer's got a lock and
26:39there's a little gouge out so i'm wondering actually if that goes in like that because then that would lock
26:47which would mean that that is the base this is a nice finished top
26:55the drawers now open it's a nice little cabinet makes total sense because it's actually finished
27:02and i can't believe what a wally i've been oh don't be so harsh on yourself robin and i will turn all
27:09of these drawers the right way around
27:15i reckon jb did that on purpose you know stitched me up well jb said he bought me a puzzle because this
27:21thing was in many pieces took me a little while to solve
27:24but i think i solved it it's quite a neat little thing great work robin with your tlc you've increased
27:36the value and it could now sell for between 60 and 100 pounds with his auction instincts tingling jb
27:43has finally sniffed out some jewelry another piece i mean look at this for a collection of jewelry
27:53when i started going for this box it's mainly costume jewelry that i was pulling out but the
27:56further i went i kept finding bits of gold and everything you see here is all solid gold and
28:02there's some stunning pieces but the best piece of all this jewelry here is this beautiful beautiful
28:09ring and what i think are two diamonds we've got a beautiful closet in here the princess cut diamonds
28:15and the way you would value a diamond is the color the clarity but mainly the size and they are two
28:22huge stones as well this could be a really really big ticket item this is every auctioneer's dream
28:28and the fact that all of this just came out of that one biscuit tin is amazing and a lot more
28:35valuable than a pack of digestives peter what a collection and this was all in this biscuit
28:42tin yes oh why was it in there that's where my father put it was this all your mum's jewelry yeah all
28:49this was all my mother's jewelry right okay when my mum passed over she left me all the jewelry
28:56and a few other bits and pieces what a collection i mean this is huge your mum must have been quite
29:03a bling lady to have all this gold oh yeah she was uh well up on her gold jewelry and bits and pieces
29:14my mum was very supportive she was supportive to both of us and the boys as well she's very kind generous
29:24a sort of person my mother left me all her personal belongings her collections of glass and other
29:38bits and pieces at first i think i was just hanging on to the jewelry for sentimental value i feel it's time
29:49now to move on pass them on to someone else to enjoy them with so much meaning tied up in each piece
29:59parting with them isn't easy but jb will work his hardest to get the best possible prices at auction
30:07and this is a huge collection do you have any idea of what value you've got here no idea at all be
30:13honest i think you could be looking around about five to seven thousand that'll come in very handy
