00:58i love having scotland it is genuinely one of my favorite places oh good oh yes jj's giving izzy the
01:13grand tour of his native soil today getting fully stuck into the local culture well we've already
01:19started the day right jj you rocking up with a haggis bowl for each of us you're very welcome well when
01:27in rome or mother well in this instance this town came into its own during the industrial revolution
01:35thanks to its iron and steel works getting it the nickname steelopolis that's one of my favorites
01:41actually welcome i mean even to be able to sing that i might try it tonight it's also the home of
01:48gordon who's getting moral support today from his karaoke pal sharon is that two the same well you
01:55must relate to me but two the same this house was previously home to gordon's parents james and eliza
02:05i was close to both of them i always said my dad was my pal and my mum was basically if i could tell
02:12her anything it was a happy childhood my dad passed in 2009 and my mum didn't feel quite secure in the
02:23house herself so gordon moved in to look after her and keep her company just having somebody here i think
02:32made her more secure but five years later eliza's own health failed after my mum died i found it hard
02:42it was bad enough when my my dad passed when my mum went i basically lost my friend as well eliza sadly
02:51passed away in 2014 leaving gordon the house and a vast array of ornaments that she collected and cherished
02:58during her lifetime it's taken gordon this long to contemplate parting with them i felt as if i needed
03:05help just trying to sort everything out it's emotional to see it going at the same time you say
03:14if it's stuck in the loft what's the point
03:19it feels very meaningful that we're going to help gordon because he went and cared for his mom and just
03:25want to help him sort of like now have the next chapter of his life do something for him yeah it
03:30feels like it's a fresh start in a new chapter and that's why our traveling team are stepping in to
03:36help jj do you reckon you can never get out the van without the old man i mean i'd love to say i'm putting
03:44on it's his age you know hello nice to meet you coming in please out of the heat
03:55this is my friend sharon hiya oh hiya nice to meet you nice to meet you so you're here to help
04:01yeah just gordon some moral support we're keen to get stuck in feel free to get through the house
04:06especially up the attic because i've not been up there for a couple of years we'll go for it see you
04:11later enjoy the sunshine thank you chop chop you two there's no time to lose you've got three rooms
04:18downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs to get to grips with you look like my cup of tea not to mention
04:25that loft maybe i'll leave this one to erzy and while gordon's house isn't the biggest it is absolutely
04:32jam-packed with things to uncover there are boxes galore wow the video stuff everywhere and they only
04:41have one day to get through it all oh that is a very sparkly cabinet and i like sparkles yes that's an
04:52awful lot of crystal ornaments oh yeah they are i was looking for the swan on the base that tells me
04:59they're swarovski and they're faceted in such a way and it's a lead crystal that it really sort of
05:04reflects the light refracts the light and you get this sort of dispersion of color and see the colors
05:09of the rainbow the company began in austria way back in 1895 when daniel swarovski invented the world's
05:18first electric crystal glass cutting machine this allowed the glass to be faceted with high precision
05:24for maximum sparkle i can see that gordon's mum was a huge collector and should have spent good
05:31money on these now unfortunately today's fashion isn't so much for ornaments people don't really
05:37collect them so these smaller pieces they're a pound a piece they're larger pieces three to five pounds a
05:43piece it's really the bigger pieces that have the big value that being said we have got here i mean
05:51there's so many probably two to three hundred pounds here in the cabinet but i would want to
05:57split them down into two or three lots and it would just be lovely to know that these are going to a
06:02home where they're going to be cherished and just enjoyment taken from them that's certainly a sizeable
06:08haul to get the ball rolling this is a nice find but i'm going to keep looking and you're not alone
06:14oh that's nice our man jj is in full-on rummage mode too i like this under here euro oh that's nice
06:27i love this action on here these little struts pop out it's in good condition they have a dirty mark
06:37down the front which i suspect comes from this air freshener it's been leaking what is this
06:44it's made of the same material so i think it comes off of a foot or something it's basically just not
06:51ready for auction i think it's worth taking a proper look at hello mister oh hello you're doing some
06:56writing about to get started on my memoirs bureaus are not my favorite thing to sell okay because
07:02they're very out of fashion so they're a hard sell at the best of times this one looks to be i would
07:08have thought early 20th century i think i will struggle to get 20 to 30 pounds but you're getting
07:16zero without it being exactly exactly you're saying give it every fighting chance it's got in that case
07:23it's time to get our mobile workshop up and running let's see what our man can do to save this
07:28from the scrap heap do you know i make a fortune selling ice creams today shame you've only got
07:35wood glue and varnish in there isn't it now what's the scoop with that bureau first things first this
07:41little fix this is missing off this leg around here that's a simple fix bit of glue and a clamp
07:48see this has had glue on it once upon a time and the glue's just kind of giving up the ghost
07:53so a rub down with sun paper should get it ready to be glued again straight on just a bit of wood glue
08:00trying to clamp this on a round surface i'm not gonna lie i might be testing
08:08every chance is going to want to slip around
08:13as i suspected the round orb nature of this is going to try my patience sounds like one of your
08:21little hacks might be needed jj take it off and try again a little bit of table salt believe it or not
08:30just put a little pinch of that on there by adding that bit of grittiness to the glue it stops the
08:35surfaces from slipping around while he clamps it fine table salt is what you want it can be himalayan
08:42it can be sea salt a bit fancy for furniture fixing jj that is drying it very quickly going to the heat today
08:52but while you wait for that what about the bureau's other issues this whole thing needs
08:57a cleanup especially this patch here where the air fresheners leak down over it so just a a non-corrosive cleaner
09:04back of a sponge should shift it without damaging the finish any just want to make sure i'm using
09:11plenty of this cleaner and it's not actually because it's cleaning it what it's doing is essentially
09:17lubricating it oh he's a stubborn one oh he's got his work cut out there we'd best leave him to it
09:26with boxes full of mum eliza's items all through the house gordon really needs our help to sort through
09:33everything especially as after holding on to them for so long he's finally ready to let them go
09:43it's got to be a bit lifted off my shoulders just to have it cleared out they were hers if you know what
09:49i mean at the same time they were only ornaments you know i'd rather have her and my dad back than
09:57the ornaments but life goes on you've just got to go on that and after caring for his mum for many
10:06years that's just what gordon hopes to do any money i make at auction i'm hoping to put towards a special
10:14holiday for my 60th birthday which was earlier in the year i could basically say it's from my mum and
10:20my dad it's just like getting a present from them even though they're not here
10:27well to make that dream holiday a reality power is he needs to keep digging crisps
10:34somebody likes crisps don't we all records yes two boxes full of vinyl lps
10:42now there's one thing to know about records those that have the potential to command good money
10:48are 1960s rock and pop onwards so led zeppelin the who the rolling stones and particularly
10:56if you've got the early albums now these are actually gordons and he and sharon met over a
11:01shared love of karaoke so i've got whitney houston in here and wham madonna now unfortunately these
11:08aren't the sorts of records that are very collectible at auction but they make up for
11:13that with quantity so that 80s collection is going to get an estimate of 75 to 130 pounds and there are
11:21some bangers in there no boogieing for jj though he's still struggling with the stubborn stain on that bureau
11:29not quite shifting as well as i want i'm going to give it
11:32a light sanding and then i'm going to have to reapply finish it's going to look worse before it looks
11:41better but i have ultimate faith in you jj it's improved i might have to accept it's not going to be
11:48perfect hopefully spot a lacquer we'll just add that shine back onto it it should also add a layer
11:55of protection against future wear and tear right i reckon this can come off it's not been that long but
12:02going to the heat of today pretty solid pretty yeah he's happy a final buff up with shoe polish on
12:11the interior leather and this heirloom is good to go it's got a fighting chance at auction though
12:18and thanks to jj's hard work the estimate of 20 to 30 pounds is a little more achievable
12:26oh we got here this is an alabaster table and lamp now it's imitating marble alabaster is a softer
12:34material cheaper and more affordable this isn't an antique piece there's no great age to it
12:41you know within the last 50 years but it should be quite a bit whiter than it is it's very yellowed
12:48if i move the lamp you can see here where the lamp's been sat and there's the whiter mark
12:54underneath this could really do with some love and i can see as well that it's it's crumbling like it's
13:00got a very rougher texture than it should have and you can see it sort of like flaking on my fingers here
13:05a flaky find won't cut it at the auction but luckily we know just the man to fix it
13:10and jj's ready for his next project anyway oh that's a horrible sound jj it's going right
13:18through me what have we got here a little project this is part one of two what is this is this well
13:24alabaster alabaster very yellow but it's all flaking off i don't know if it's had a varnish or something
13:31on it does sort of feel as if there's been a finish on that as it is we can't send it to auction i mean
13:37it'll be in working order but it's just a bit ancient oh we rewire wouldn't hurt leave it with
13:42me okay first things first taking a brush to that flaky surface all right we'll give it a go
13:51yeah that's sort of shifting it that might look like i'm damaging the stone i'm not i'm just taking
13:58the finish off of it this is all probably hand carved and it's not like the most over elaborate
14:03design which is nice right that is the worst i got off off the top of the lamp anyway still got a
14:11table to do i think you're gonna need a bigger brush
14:17oh gordon's got this ladder down for me right here he goes
14:21i did not know what to expect up here looks like more boxes a lot more boxes oh it is hot up here
14:31though this is going to take some rummaging through now this looks like a camera bag
14:38oh okay zenit camera ah these look like binoculars so for the two cameras the binoculars 20 pounds on a
14:48good day well better that than stuck in a loft any more oh the shoes lovely these are probably all
14:55going to be shoes then aren't they you are not you are a games console do you know what there is a
15:06real resurgence in retro gaming in part driven by people of my generation a little bit older a
15:14little bit younger sort of harking back to that nostalgia of when they were children but also
15:20they're just great fun aren't they let's have a look nintendo 64. the must-have tech toy of the late
15:261990s although this japanese company started all the way back in 1889 manufacturing playing cards
15:36do you know what i don't know that this has actually been out of the box
15:38i mean that's all in there isn't it neat and tidy for this i would suggest at auction without any
15:47games that you would be looking at 30 to 50 pounds but if we get a couple of retro fans bidding it could
15:53be game on back out at the fan the alabaster table is next to get the brush off all right let me get rid
16:04of the all that dust next sorting out all that ancient wiring i'm going to get the innards out
16:10of this ready to replace them because if this lamp is going to sell at auction it needs to work and be
16:18safe hiya how are you going on how are you sir yeah no bad trying to fix this lamp i can sell it's got
16:24a wee bit of age on it do you remember where you got it my mum brought that and the table from port
16:31cleanser really used to go every year yeah how did she get it back in her suitcase in her suit sorry
16:37on the plane yeah the table the base was in one suitcase and the top was in another talk about
16:45excess baggage what was your mum like small feisty and she was from this part of the world was she yeah
16:51yeah and obviously you know you really cared for her through the last years of her life how did you
16:55find that i always said when i was born she cared for me so in her latter years i cared for her full
17:04circle ah nice nice well listen i'm going to get this look at its very best again i'll leave you to
17:10it just to go on mate indeed indeed you can sit and swelter with her i was going to say you go get
17:15yourself into the shade you should yeah thanks very much time to rewire this i'm going to snip this off
17:25that's it we're in no going back now jj treat myself some new cable
17:33new plug new switch new fitting let's get it all together it's not a novice job to work safely with
17:41electrics you need to know what you're doing but luckily jj's got the credentials used to literally
17:47teach kids how to do this at school when i was a design and technology teacher auction houses will
17:53only sell an electrical item if it's been properly tested so a potentially dangerous item can't be
17:59bought but jj knows what he's doing bulb back in see if it works and that lamp will be electrically
18:07tested before it goes under the hammer another bright idea for me eh don't congratulate yourself
18:17too soon there's still work to be done on those alabaster items and places still to search inside
18:24oh wow there really is stuff everywhere yes it's a bit of a challenge isn't it three lamps who needs
18:31one bedside lamp and you can have three now these look like ladro a spanish porcelain company renowned
18:37for their very recognizable pastel colored figurines and there seems to be a sizable amount of them
18:43it's a good collection and actually the fact it's all wrapped up here in boxes tells me that this isn't
18:50a love of gordon's this is a love of his mums and they're not being cherished and they're actually just
18:56taking up space in the bedroom now in terms of selling them on there are collectors out there for
19:01them and actually it's a really good collection here izzy's going to combine some of the most saleable
19:06pieces into one lot with an auction estimate of 80 to 100 pounds and she's not finished with this room
19:13yet got a pendant necklace here with sapphires and it's stamped 375 so nine carat gold and then let's
19:21have a look at these earrings also stamped 375 with dini dini diamonds i would suggest a guide of 80 to
19:30120 pounds on these two another good find for the auction list right i need to keep looking hello oh
19:40how are you well i'm having a good search through all of gordon's items he's got a lot hasn't he oh lords
19:47is this quite a big deal for him to do this i think no it's not i think before it was it's got
19:54a lot of memories and things but i think now he's getting older and it just feels that he wants to
19:59move on rather than anything happens to him and somebody else is moving on yeah how long have you
20:04two been friends for 13 14 years as i love the person it'll do anything for you anytime i've got a
20:09problem i phone him everyone needs a friend like that well i'm gonna keep going then there's a lot
20:15to do here okay i'll go see what gordon's up to keep him out of trouble yep as always thank you see you
20:21later yes there are a lot more boxes to battle through but we do have quite a haul so far there's
20:30the myriad of crystal ornaments belonging to gordon's mum a games console rescued from the loft
20:37boxes full of vinyl records and more discoveries like a signed motherwell fc football just sitting
20:44in the shed i would hope that we can get at least 20 to 30 pounds to this and jj's worked his magic on
20:52an edwardian bureau but to get gordon off on his 60th birthday holiday courtesy of mum and dad we're
20:59going to need more like that alabaster table and lamp brushed down rewired and ready for the next
21:05step i am delighted with how they are looking most of that yellowing actually came from the finish
21:12itself and now that's off it's exposing the original color of it quite nicely having said that there's
21:17still a marked difference in some of the spots here so i'm going to try and apply something to take
21:25some of the staining out of it alabaster is water soluble so if you try and clean it with water
21:31it'll actually erode it so you need to use something that is water free and that's exactly what petroleum
21:38jelly is i'm going to work it in leave it on for a while and then buff it off and see what happens
21:46and this is exactly why you should never throw your old toothbrushes away very handy for working
21:53that goo into all the nooks and crannies all right they're coated up nicely but i'll just put
21:59this stuff over to one side for about an hour i reckon let it work its magic and then i'll get it cleaned
22:05up and while jj waits for that he's off to find something else to fix i love these tables looks
22:13like those might be another potential project my mum and dad had a set of these when i was growing up
22:21look how cool this is it's a nest of tables but these come out this is so fun there you go it's a cool
22:30little design really practical and it's an all right condition as ever there's a bit of damage
22:37on the top of the main one the tables a bit of a chip on the veneer but i think with its age it's
22:45actually kind of come around again and it's just a nice compact little number look at this i'm gonna
22:52wheel it away like an air steward you'd better fly these past the captain before you get fixing
23:00i think i can hear a jj on his way hello tea coffee oh coffee please tables is what i've got
23:07for you a nest of look at this my mum and dad had a set of these when i was a kid and i always
23:13oh it's so wee don't need to do the honors a wee twist there there we go now nostalgia alert here
23:20we used to have our like dinner on a saturday night in front of the telly picky bits dinner do
23:25you know what i like about this jj is it's still really usable and you get four well you get five
23:30tables don't you really because you've got this one but it's so compact they are still going to be
23:34quite a tricky sell even in pristine condition which they will be which they will be but there's not an
23:40obscene amount of work in it so it's worth the effort yeah i i think so right pack it up with the green
23:45light given happy days i'll leave you to it let's get those out to the van for a spruce up while izzy
23:54heads back up to the bedrooms okay boxes on the bed by the bed oh yes so many boxes oh that's
24:03beautiful isn't it these fish are part of the wonders of the sea collection looks like you found
24:08those higher value crystal ornaments that you were after izzy now second hand the pieces in the uk
24:16don't sell as well just because it's not fashionable anymore to have ornaments however america are a
24:22big fan and they buy many of these types of ornaments so it wouldn't surprise me if we get some
24:27american buyers interested in this collection and there's no small amount of it oh he's nice isn't he
24:37a tiger part of an endangered wildlife set stripy tiger gordon's mum was definitely bitten by the
24:44bug wasn't she okay wow even the boxes are getting more extravagant this is the peacock
24:54oh wow look at that i mean even if you're not a fan you can appreciate the beauty of that peacock
25:04showing off his tail feathers there is a lot here isn't there hey gordon yeah well i found your
25:10mum's crystal collection yeah she loved it i think it was the sparkle and stuff like that because when
25:16the sun shines on it it basically gives like a kind of rainbow effect and was she part of a collector's
25:22club yeah you used to put your name forward to see if you'd be selected and if you were selected
25:29you'd have the opportunity to buy them right are you happy for jj and i to sell your collection yeah
25:35yeah it was just so much it you couldn't display it all yeah that's nice stuff that needs to be
25:42displayed your mum would want it displayed wouldn't she yeah definitely
25:45izzy's looking at an estimate of 70 to 100 pounds for the fish the tiger gets bundled in with the rest of
25:52the range at 80 to 130 pounds and then two to 300 for the peacock but there's so much more of mum's
26:00collection to sell as well for the entire collection everything here everything downstairs i really do
26:07reckon you could be into four figures and looking at another thousand pounds juzel that would certainly
26:12help towards gordon's 60th celebration well i promised you my help today so i'm going to keep
26:17looking i'll let you go on met thanks very much okay i love this set of tables but if they're going to
26:26make money we need to make sure they're looking their very best so i reckon the top of this one is
26:31going to need stripped fully and we'll start again with its finish but the other ones i should be able to
26:37just do little spot repairs on the little bits of damage to the veneer but first let's get sanding
26:43jj's using an extractor for the dust so no need for a mask i'm going to go with a really fine grade
26:49of sandpaper yes careful you don't go through the veneer jj that is looking really nice obviously all
26:58the marks are gone i think a few coats of oil will give it the correct color
27:04yeah at the end of the day it might just be a veneer but it is a hardwood veneer
27:12you really want that wood to speak for itself i think and as well as bringing out the grain the
27:19wood oil also gives some protection happy with that and with a large table out in the sun to dry
27:25time to tackle the small ones okay i'm going to start taking a look at these this is a perfect example
27:31of that really thin veneer why you've got to be cautious with it looks like it's had the odd knock
27:38over the years luckily our van holds a few spare bits for just this sort of thing you can see just
27:45how thin it is a fraction of a millimeter is all you've got hence why you don't want to sand through it
27:52i'll be able to pop that on there a bit of glue finish up and you'll never see it cutting it to
28:01the rough shape and size but i'm just going to make it a wee bit bigger that's pretty good let's just
28:07take a bit of super glue and then i'll do my best to not stick my fingers to it hmm that would be a
28:15problem oh panic over i'm just going to remove some of the excess with a knife just taking that
28:23tiny last bit off then just a touch of furniture oil to blend it into the existing veneer that's
28:29pretty good that will lighten as well once the oil penetrates down into it and you'll never know
28:35that was there satisfying we fix and it also means is he can give it an estimate of 20 to 30 pounds
28:43look at that ready for another tv dinner and ready for the auction
28:55but with the day drawing to an end more clothes towel everyone needs a towel cupboard we could
29:02still do with finding a high value item or two time to dig deep izzy loads oh oh this goes oh this
29:12is like narnia this goes all the way back you're only meant to search the bedroom hello hello hello
29:20did you hear the echo hmm silly billy back to reality eh however it has drawn my eye down to
29:28this this has izzy barma written all over it a jewelry box but does it contain izzy barma's favorite things
29:37i can see we've got some gold so we've got a nice nine carat gold bracelet here all these nine carat
29:45gold earrings that says three seven five so three seven five tells me it's nine carat because that's
29:51three hundred and seventy five parts out of a thousand of gold
29:56this one says three seven five it also says gran on it hmm they're either going to be diamonds white sapphires
30:07i don't think they're cubic zirconius just because they're not quite sparkly enough there is a lot of
30:13jewelry here all these lactuses these lactuses are gold as well gold rings this is good i was not expecting to
30:21find this here in the bottom of the cupboard all of this belonged to gordon's auntie whose house he
30:27cleared after she died for the gold i would split it down into various lots but collectively for all of
30:34it it's easily 1200 to 1800 pounds that's more like the figures we were hoping for izzy will give a
30:42value of 120 to 160 pounds on the bracelet a group of three coin rings will be valued at 130 to 170 pounds
30:52plus that blingy bangle which could make 170 to 220 pounds and a lot more besides that's kind of really
31:00helped gordon get his special trip and that's time up on a very productive day from a box full of bling
31:08to a cracking crystal collection izzy has come up with the goods and jj's handiwork will add value too
31:15once he's got the petroleum jelly off the alabaster cleaning up nicely those nice white shades are
31:21returning probably that lovely that it's ready for auction izzy's given the lamp and table an estimate of
31:3140 to 60 pounds and relax i've had a wonderful day gordon you're still smiling yeah as always
31:38always smiling well we're still smiling as well but we best get on our way yes and leave you to your

31:58it's been six weeks since our grand clear out at gordon's house and our intrepid twosome are in
32:04scotland again on their way to the town of peebles this historic royal borough was birthplace to
32:11william and robert chambers publishers of amongst other things the chambers english dictionary
32:16and the very definition of charm and sophistication izzy and jj have arrived you've got a busy day
32:24today i do all the jewelry can be here a while aren't we i'll bring you cups of tea the kindly
32:31folk at the people's auction house have given us the run of the place today in this former old
32:36school building now what i want to be really careful of jj is that this glass cabinet well yes and
32:42all the crystal oh yeah don't want to barge into that with this oh that gonna work for you i reckon
32:49so and that looks pretty decent jj yeah russham's all right too
32:56and here bright and early to bag the best spot gordon and his pal sharon there are 48 items in the
33:03auction today many the prized collections of gordon's late mum eliza but there's one particular piece
33:09that jj is keen to show off all right how you doing very well you looking forward to this
33:16aye lightened out experience okay i've got your alabaster under here do you want to see it
33:21aye you're on the mind god that's amazing job isn't it so it's all had a good cleanup and then the lamps
33:26have been rewired as well yeah how do you think he's been getting on i've been going fine just a bit
33:31sad well the thing's going to be right enough haven't you definitely well listen i'm going to get this stuff
33:36through and into pride of place uh if you guys just go and make yourself comfy for a minute okay
33:41no problem thanks let's hope that all of gordon's items come up trumps with our bidders
33:46to fund that special trip for his 60th but which of mum eliza's items does izzy think will sparkle in
33:53the sale doesn't that peacock look fantastic with all the tail feathers splayed out i think today might
34:00be quite hard for gordon selling his mum's items and particularly when we get to her passion to a
34:05collector this is the pièce de résistance it's a piece that they're really going to want to have
34:09in their collection so i just hope that they're out there today bidding against each other i'm
34:14going to be crossing my fingers that we can fly the flag for gordon's mum and really do well with this
34:19peacock some of those collectors may well be browsing the wares already as our sale room starts
34:25to fill up and for online bids from around the world we have christopher on hand to help come make
34:31yourselves comfy oh is he'll be here in a second all right with the best seats in the house for
34:39our guests of honor let's hope gordon's mum's treasures go to new homes to be cherished once
34:44again and i think we're just about ready to start hello everyone hello hello lovely to see you all here
34:53and a big warm welcome to gordon and sharon so we are selling gordon's mum's items who sadly passed away
35:02he is hoping to go on a belated trip for a big birthday that he celebrated recently so um that's
35:08why we're here today to get this party started let's go back to the 80s with gordon's lp collection
