00:00Speaking with TV6 this afternoon, Deputy Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin said that the TTPS had received a positive response from the initiative and as a result, they are expected to meet with officials from the Ministry of Education to see how best the program could be brought to new schools this term.
00:19He said the TTPS would approach the Ministry of Education to have discussions on further expansions into other schools throughout the country.
00:27He recalled that last year, about 29 students from different schools had been detained for various offences during the school term.
00:37These offences included assault as a result of fights, robbery, possession of a weapon and even marijuana possession.
00:45These students were taken before the courts and their matters are being heard.
00:49In July, Prime Minister Kamala-Passad-Bissessa announced that the government would be facilitating the placement of police units at specific schools throughout the country after a spate of violent reports among students who were fighting.
01:05A total of 95 officers took specialized school-oriented policing training.
01:10The program involved 50 schools and officially started on September 8th.
01:16Since then, while reports of violence among school children do continue, they are no longer as frequent.
01:24This, Benjamin said, is proof that their efforts are bearing fruit and it is something that the TTPS is very proud of.
