00:00The Caribbean community CARICOM also raised its voice against Washington's attack on Venezuela
00:05and the kidnapping of its president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cecilia Flores.
00:10Correspondent Chris Dalhoitek provides the details.
00:16The Caribbean community has responded to U.S. military action in Venezuela,
00:22reaffirming the region's commitment to international law and sovereignty.
00:26In a statement released Saturday afternoon, the Bureau of the Conference of CARICOM heads of government
00:32comprising Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Lucia said CARICOM is firmly committed
00:39to the fundamental principles of international law.
00:42The regional bloc called for peaceful dialogue through diplomatic channels
00:46and said it remains ready to support such efforts in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.
00:52Meanwhile, speaking at a national security briefing in Braystown, Barbados,
00:57Prime Minister Mia Amor-Montley described the immediate regional impact.
01:01We always said that conflict would have consequences.
01:05And many of you ask, what would those consequences be?
01:08What would they look like?
01:09Well, we're living them out today.
01:11Barbados is probably the biggest hub closest to Venezuela in terms of tourism
01:16and therefore in terms of air flights and in terms of hotel accommodation
01:20and cruise accommodation, we would inevitably be affected.
01:26Thirteen flights to Barbados were cancelled, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
01:32Small states can only survive in an international rules-based order
01:36and that, therefore, anything that happens that runs contrary to that
01:41would be of grave concern to us as a people in Barbados, but equally as to the region.
01:48The Prime Minister called for the UN Security Council intervention to establish guardrails.
01:54More or quite frankly, I would have expected that the Security Council should have been meeting already
01:58to be able to ensure that there are at least guardrails put in place, even as we speak now,
02:05to ensure that there is no potential for this precedent to be abused in the future by other countries.
02:13CARICOM said it will continue monitoring the evolving situation
02:16and its impact on regional air travel and economic activity.
