Crushed Butler – Uncrushed 1969-71 (UK, Proto-Punk, Hard Rock)
Crushed Butler is a band that could have been called "the first British punk band," ahead of its time, and so on. But none of that happened. In 1969, the blistering music of three angry young Londoners, Alan Butler, Jesse Hector, and Darryl Read, didn't please an audience primarily inclined toward peaceful psychedelia, intellectual progressive rock, and Celtic folk. Over two years, they managed to record only six of their compositions in various studios and concert halls. Occasionally, they were assisted in the studio by a musician from the band Smile (whose members included Brian May, Roger Taylor, and Freddie Mercury). The band disbanded in 1971. Darryl Read became a successful session musician (he has collaborated with both Ray Manzarek and Mickey Finn of T.Rex), and he also released a solo album in 2002. In 1974, the two other musicians formed the pub rock band Hammersmith Gorillas, which had modest success with their version of "You Really Got Me." In 1998, the band's full recordings were finally released, and the band achieved long-deserved cult status, prompting a reunion.
