00:00Basil was born around the year 330 in Cappadocia, in present-day Türkiye.
00:07He was born into an exceptional Christian family, where several members would be recognized as saints.
00:14From a very young age, he received an extraordinary intellectual and spiritual education.
00:20A brilliant student, he continued his studies in Caesarea, then in Constantinople, and finally in Athens.
00:26where he formed a deep friendship with Gregory of Nazianzus.
00:30Together, they form a generation of Christian thinkers,
00:35capable of engaging in dialogue with Greek philosophy, while remaining faithful to the Gospel.
00:41Despite a promising career in teaching and administration, Basile chose a different path.
00:48He renounces human glory to devote himself entirely to God.
00:52He withdrew for a time into solitude, leading a life of rest and prayer.
00:57seeking to unite intelligence and humility.
01:01Ordained a priest and later bishop of Caesarea,
01:04Basil quickly found himself at the heart of the doctrinal storms of his time.
01:09Arianism, which denies the divinity of Christ,
01:12divides the Church and benefits from the support of imperial power.
01:16Basile firmly opposes it, at the cost of pressure, threats and isolation.
01:23He never gives in, neither to the powerful, nor to easy compromises.
01:29His faith is upright, rooted, and luminous.
01:32But Basil is not only a theologian.
01:36He is also a pastor deeply attentive to human suffering.
01:41Faced with poverty, famine, and disease,
01:44He founded a huge charitable complex on the outskirts of Caesarea.
01:48Hospital, hospice, refuge for the poor and excluded.
01:53This work, later called the Basiliad,
01:56is one of the first major hospital centers in Christian history.
02:00For Basil, serving God without serving the poor makes no sense.
02:06He constantly reminds us that accumulated wealth is often a disguised form of injustice.
02:11and that whoever turns away from the needy turns away from Christ himself.
02:17He also wrote a monastic rule based on balance,
02:21community prayer, work and charity.
02:25This rule still influences monastic life in the East and West today.
02:32Exhausted by work, spiritual struggles, and illness,
02:36Basil died on January 1, 379, at only 49 years old.
02:42The very next day, January 2nd, the Church honored his memory.
02:46Saint Basil the Great remains a timeless model,
02:51a saint who unites intelligence and faith, contemplation and action, truth and mercy.
02:58Lord God, you who gave to Saint Basil the Great a luminous mind and a heart burning with charity,
03:10Grant us, through his intercession, to love the truth without pride and to serve the poor with humility.
03:18Teach us to unite faith and action, prayer and commitment,
03:24so that our whole life may bring glory to your name.
03:27Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
