1st January - National weather forecast presented by Kat Chalk.
Transcript
00:00Hello, well it's been a cold start to the new year and we hold on to this cold theme
00:05as we go through the end of this week and into the start of the new week. So we've got
00:10low pressure situated to the east, high pressure to the west and that is what's driving this
00:14northerly flow, so really dragging in that cold and arctic air. We've got frontal systems in the
00:20flow as well, that's going to bring a focus for some rain, sleet and snow and another one
00:25on Saturday to bring a focus for some showers further inland. But back to the rest of this
00:32evening, any showers fading away inland, there'll be plenty of clear skies across northern England,
00:37but across northern Ireland we've got showery outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow. This is going
00:43to push it further towards the south into Wales and into central and southern England. So there is a
00:48Met Office snow and ice warning in force, so especially as you wake up on Friday morning,
00:54there could be some icy stretches. To the north of that clear skies, a widespread frost and across
01:00Scotland that's where we still hold on to a focus for frequent heavy snow showers. So a cold night
01:08to come, temperatures really falling away, minus two, minus three degrees. So as we start Friday morning,
01:15there'll be plenty of brightness across northern parts of England, but across the south this cloud,
01:20rain, sleet and snow will continue to push its way southwards. That actually leads to a bright day for
01:27many of us through Friday afternoon. Still a focus for some showers across parts of Wales,
01:32across Northern Ireland and more so again across Scotland. So here there is an amber snow and ice
01:39warning, so a further 10 to 20 centimetres of snow is possible to low-lying routes, but 30 to 40 over the
01:46highest ground and with those strong winds, blizzardous conditions with drifting snow. So do take care if you
01:53are travelling. Otherwise for all of us it's a colder day out there, temperatures below average for the time
02:01of year zero to up to six degrees in the south. So as we go through Friday evening then further heavy snow
02:09showers persisting across much of northern parts of Scotland. A few showers across Northern Ireland into
02:16Wales in towards the southwest of England as well where you're exposed to that northerly flow, but
02:21otherwise across inland areas plenty of lengthy clear skies. So some temperatures really plummeting away
02:29once again a cold night to come with a widespread frost to start Saturday morning. But that does leave
02:37many areas with plenty of sunshine, however a focus for some showers just pushing further inland across
02:44northeastern areas. So in particular the North Yorkshire Moors that's where we could see accumulations
02:49building one to three centimetres possible, still with frequent snow showers coming in to northern
02:54parts of Scotland. But inland areas away from that wind you're actually seeing plenty of sunshine on
03:01Saturday. Still going to be feeling cold out there though, temperatures really struggling, minus one to
03:06again six degrees across the southwest. Now that is all from me for now, but make sure to hit subscribe
03:15so you don't miss any forecasts. I'll see you soon. Bye bye.
