National weather forecast presented by Kat Chalk

00:00Good afternoon and a happy new year. Well as we head into 2026 it's going to be turning colder
00:06with frequent snow showers especially across Scotland. Now having a look at the bigger picture
00:11we've got an area of low pressure to the east, high pressure towards the west and this is what's
00:15driving this northerly flow so dragging in that cold arctic air. We also have this frontal system
00:22just to watch for as we go through this evening and overnight that will affect Northern Ireland,
00:26Wales and Central and Southern England. But back to the rest of this afternoon there's still a few
00:32showers around mainly across parts of Wales but as we head into the afternoon there should be some
00:37glimmers of late evening sunshine for many of us especially across Northern Ireland and Northern
00:43England. Across Scotland though that's where we're going to see frequent snow showers there is a Met
00:48Office warning in place for snow and ice. We also have some strong winds with gales so it's going to
00:55be feeling rather cold not very cold when exposed to that wind. So for temperatures highs of up to
01:03one or four degrees across Scotland but feeling close to maybe minus five maybe minus six degrees
01:10but across the south up to seven or eight degrees this afternoon. Now as we go through this afternoon
01:16and more so into the evening any showers gradually fading for a time but this feature will start moving in
01:22across Northern Ireland into Wales into Central and Southern England. It's going to be a mixture of rain
01:28sleet and snow so some slushy deposits around one to two centimetres possibly five centimetres but the main
01:35thing to note is there's going to be an ice risk as we start Friday morning with this clearing its way
01:42southwards. Towards the north of that though plenty of clear skies so turning cold with a frost and
01:48frequent showers still persisting across Scotland falling as snow perhaps even accumulating even higher
01:55especially across eastern areas. So a cold and frosty start to Friday morning with icy stretches so do take
02:04care if you are out and about. Now this cloud rain and sleet and snow will continue to sink its way
02:10southwards across Wales and eventually in towards the south coast but otherwise as we head into Friday
02:16afternoon many of us are seeing plenty of winter sunshine there's going to be a focus for showers
02:22that'll be falling wintry across Northern Ireland perhaps even across the Welsh mountains and some
02:27just towards the far southwest but again the most frequent showers will be across Scotland where you're
02:33exposed to that northerly wind and it's still going to be staying blustery especially down that north
02:38and eastern coast but for many inland areas it's actually going to be fine and dry plenty of winter
02:44sunshine but for all of us we'll all be tapping into that cold arctic air now so it's going to be
02:49feeling colder tomorrow highs of up to five or six degrees. So as we go through Friday evening not too
02:57much changes really we hold on to the persistent showers across Scotland even across Northern Ireland
03:03some coming down into the Welsh mountains and towards the far southwest but for many inland areas
03:09it's actually going to be another cold and crisp night with a widespread frost to start Saturday morning.
03:16That is all from me for now but have a lovely afternoon and I'll catch you very soon. Bye bye.
