00:00The UN has described alarming humanitarian conditions in Sudan's western Darfur city of Elfershire
00:07following its first visits since the city fell to the paramilitary rapid support forces in October.
00:14It was a tense mission because we're going into what we don't know, into what we've been describing,
00:23the UN has been describing as a crime scene, so we're going into a massive crime scene.
00:27The UN says hundreds of civilians remain, facing shortages of medicine, education and basic supplies.
00:36To make that step, this is just the first step.
00:40Inside the town, there are still civilians, but we didn't see huge numbers.
00:48There aren't thousands of people milling around that town, not at all.
00:53Now, what we saw and what may actually still be there, maybe two different things, right?
01:02So we're talking about a visit of a couple of hours to a couple of locations just to get a sense of what was going on.
01:10We still believe there are people being detained and that there are people who are injured who need to be medically evacuated.
01:18So clearly still civilians, but not in huge numbers.
01:22Food prices are extreme, with a kilo of rice reportedly costing up to $100.
01:28Villages surrounding El Fersha appeared completely abandoned, while those still in the city are surviving in damaged buildings or makeshift shelters without clean water, toilet or adequate food.
01:40We still believe there are people around to zien happening to a fewis.
01:56We still believe in the other ones can last year or to winvor or usually be payed and the other workers are just protected.
