00:00Don't go anywhere I need to get a statement from you who's involved some people that have called
00:10in said that they hit a hawk on the interstate amazing to me that he was still alive I'm watching
00:16these guys coming down and there's fire all around us today we are going to electroshock
00:22some fish it will briefly stun the fish we can net them and measure them if I find out that this
00:26elk has been shot it's potentially a felony that is crazy look at this fish that is absolutely insane
00:34these embers that are falling on us right now we should get out of here Nevada a land of extremes
00:43from the strip to the summits it's wild country home to more than 900 species and a way of life
00:52worth protecting preserved for the people and the wildlife that call it home one team
00:59stands guard this is Nevada wild
01:22I got a report of a vehicle that I had actually looked at about a month ago which appears to be
01:32abandoned there's some things about it that just look kind of off to me the windows are rolled down
01:38nothing's locked it looks really disheveled and it's not registered run the vin number and it comes back to
01:45someone in arizona that's not answering with it being a really remote area and this vehicle being
01:50out for so long it's possible this individual went for a hike and is out on the mountains and that's
01:56where my expertise and my skill set comes into play and I patrol an area bigger than some states
02:04I know springs and mountain ranges and the main roads and most of the stuff in these areas but
02:11every single year I'll get on a road and be like I had no idea that this road even existed
02:16so we're coming up on this vehicle the windows are down not likely that someone would leave a vehicle
02:22here wouldn't leave the windows down it looks to me like someone would park it like this to go for a
02:28hike a quick hike and then they would come back
02:30it's never been locked it's just open there's water food things that look like he intended to utilize it
02:43for a while normally we wouldn't go into a person's vehicle and look around but when it's a public safety
02:51issue and I'm worried about a guy's life then we have the ability to dig a little deeper without having
02:57a warrant does say right on the window here bad transmission I mean it could be leaving a note
03:02for someone hey this is has a bad transmission that's why I'm leaving it here you know you can
03:07show me out I'm gonna do a little recon up on Dutch John Mountain possible missing person things can
03:15get really dangerous really quick out here you fall and break your leg and you're only half a mile
03:20out that half a mile in the heat can kill you it can get dangerous in a hurry so I'm just going to
03:27do a trek up to that mountain range we're going to be looking for scent the smell of something dead
03:34after a month it's more of a recovery operation if there is a body out here than a rescue
03:50you ready to go let's make it happen all right let's do this I am Lisa Osborne I am with Nevada
04:00Department of Wildlife I am a fisheries biologist in southern Nevada today I am out at Hunts Canyon
04:06Creek with Connor Friel local game warden and local expert to the area my family is fourth generation
04:14Nevadan spent my whole life outside come from a law enforcement background being a game warden was the
04:19natural progression of combining love for the outdoors and law enforcement we are going to
04:24survey some fish in Hunts Canyon Creek and see what's there for an official site we measure out
04:31a predetermined length so 50 to 100 meters as a fisheries biologist we survey streams so that
04:39we can tell people what fish is where the last survey that took place here was in 1956 it summarizes
04:45fish that have been stocked from 1912 to 1956 and in that time they stocked rainbow trout brook trout
04:52brown trout there have been a lot of fish stocked in this stream in the last 100 years some of them
04:58may be here none of them may be here I expect that we will at least catch brook trout which is the local
05:04report of what's in here the reason why we would shock upstream is that any turbidity that we cause and
05:12silt that we stir up will go behind us and it's clear upstream and then also as the fish are stunned
05:20the current will just bring them right to us and right into our nets I'm going to use a backpack
05:24electro shocker it is a standardized method for surveying fish throughout north america it puts
05:30an electrical current into the water it will briefly stun the fish we can net them and measure them and go from
05:36there um I want to see if I can get something in the lowest part of this site hopefully I can catch it
05:48we've been asked in the past you know why wouldn't we just net the fish or just net a few up these are
05:53wild trout and so they're really skittish and they're gonna see us coming got them they're all
06:09brown trout oh there's a good one we are catching brown trout we expected brook trout here that is a
06:16little bit surprising it's already a species that I did not think we were going to catch
06:21they're wild here they're established we caught multiple age classes so we know that they're
06:27surviving over generations but it's really cool because now there's another species that anglers
06:33could potentially come and catch in one stream there isn't any size limit on these trout this creek is
06:40three trout in general small streams wild trout they're not going to be giant fish that you would get
06:46in a big river or a like a lake if we caught like an eight or ten inch fish that would be a really big
06:53fish for this stream okay there's one by your foot
07:01まあ về mackaged i take a deepั่en
07:12kiosk
07:17that brook trout are like some people's favorite pastime from childhood
07:20But it's also nice to have a place
07:21with something different, like brown trout.
07:32Oh, oh.
07:37A little water in the boots.
07:38It's OK.
07:40Whoa, jeez!
07:43This is amazing!
07:50We did about a mile loop up there.
07:55Wasn't able to see anything, glassed up some of the cliff
07:59faces and things just in case he'd fallen.
08:03Yeah, it was definitely good to get in there
08:04and just do a preliminary search and see
08:06if we found any footprints.
08:08I'm going to do a little more research
08:09and see if we can come up with something to really narrow down
08:13who we're looking for.
08:14And the mystery remains unsolved.
08:25You see that smoke coming up?
08:27So this is the Pony Springs Fire Station.
08:30I can pull in here real quick and see if they can fill me in
08:34on where that fire is at.
08:39Looks like they're gone.
08:41They're probably out fighting that fire.
08:46I know the rancher out there, so I'm going to give him a call
08:48and see if he's all right.
08:56Hello?
08:56Hey, John.
08:58Hey, I'm looking over there from Highway 93.
09:02It looks like there's some smoke out by your guys' area.
09:04Are you guys got a fire out there?
09:06Yeah, I can see the smoke out the door.
09:09Is it making you nervous?
09:11Um, it is now that I walked outside.
09:14I didn't see it just like 10 minutes ago when I walked out
09:17the door, so it's pretty quick.
09:21All right, call me if you need anything.
09:23I'm going to make sure BLM knows about it.
09:26OK, that would be awesome.
09:27Call me back if you guys need anything.
09:29OK, thank you.
09:30Be safe.
09:33So this fire sounds like it could be threatening a ranch that I
09:37have a really close, I mean, friends that border on family out
09:42there.
09:42It makes it a little bit personal, but also it's a public
09:45safety issue, so we're about 40 miles from it.
09:48Let's see if it's threatening any structures.
09:51I'm going to call the Bureau of Land Management and just make
09:53sure they got fire crews that know about it and they're responding.
09:58You get these really dry summers and then these storm systems that
10:01roll through and lightning strikes and a lot of this country goes up.
10:07It's like a tinderbox.
10:09I mean, you can see out there now, it's really starting to roll up
10:13above that mountain.
10:24I mean, you can see out there now, it's really starting to roll
10:27up above that mountain.
10:33You can dispatch Becky.
10:35Becky, this is John Anderson, a game warden with the Department
10:38of Wildlife.
10:39I'm headed towards Mount Wilson.
10:42Do you guys already have this fire reported out in the Hamlin
10:44Valley?
10:45I don't think so.
10:46Smoke's pouring out back on there.
10:48All right, we'll get some stuff going and thank you,
10:50and we might check back with you.
10:51All right.
10:52Great, thanks, bye.
10:53Bye.
10:55That's the BLM Fire Dispatch Center out of Yealy.
10:58When we first saw it, five minutes, 10 minutes ago,
11:01it was really wispy.
11:03And now it's billowing smoke.
11:08If I can get out here and help them locate the fire,
11:12get a GPS coordinate for them so they can get in there
11:16and respond quickly and get that fire under control.
11:19One minute, you're working on finding a missing person,
11:22and then the next, you're heading into the mountains
11:25trying to find a wildfire.
11:27A little water in the boots, it's OK.
11:40Whoa, jeez!
11:43This is amazing!
11:50Oh, my god.
11:51There's fish all around our feet.
11:54Insane.
11:56Brown trout are one of those species
11:57that can get really, really big in not very much water.
12:02That's not two feet of water.
12:04I mean, that might be a foot deep.
12:08Look at this fish.
12:09I mean, that is absolutely insane.
12:12And there were about four of these same size fish
12:15in that one spot.
12:17It's really amazing.
12:18And that's actually one of the special things about brown trout
12:21is that in a small amount of water,
12:23they can grow really big.
12:26So, yeah, let's get to measuring.
12:28I definitely want a picture with that one.
12:29Yeah.
12:30When Connor wants a picture with a fish, it's special.
12:35Today was such a fun day.
12:37We got to walk around in some beautiful meadows,
12:40see some beautiful stream, beautiful fish.
12:42And so that's going to be something
12:44that's really exciting for local anglers.
12:46And people may even come to this stream just for these fish.
13:02Now, we're still 10 miles from the Hermitage Ranch
13:05where my friends live.
13:07But the wind is blowing that direction.
13:10We got to be really careful when we get in there
13:13that we don't get in and get trapped in there.
13:15Especially on roads like this, you can get back on a road
13:18and then the road, it can burn across
13:20and then you're stuck back in an area.
13:23It's no good.
13:25Fires are a natural part of ecosystems.
13:29You can look on some of these mountain sides
13:31where it's burned 10 years ago,
13:33and that's where all the critters are.
13:34That's where the deer and the elk and the wild horses
13:37and things hang out because it's such great habitat,
13:39such good forage.
13:41So there's pros and cons to fires.
13:44We worry about the ranches around here
13:46and the people that have property
13:47and the people that live around here.
13:51So there's a truck coming this way.
13:53It might be Jim from the Hermitage.
13:57How's it going, Jim?
13:58Howdy, howdy.
14:00How many acres are we looking at?
14:02They hiked up and put one of the hot spots out
14:04up on Coyote's side, right at the Y between Coyote and Miller.
14:09It's crossed the road this side of the water springs
14:12and it's already going up.
14:13If it crests over with this wind,
14:14it's going to go all the way through with McCullough.
14:17The way it's looking, I would get out.
14:19Well, the wind's blowing that direction.
14:21Yep.
14:22And if it comes over that lip with this wind
14:24coming down from that face, all of that's gone.
14:26Yeah.
14:27So this fire is in an area where it could burn
14:31into where people live.
14:33The problem is that there's other fires going on
14:36throughout the state and throughout the West.
14:38So resources are cut really thin right now.
14:41Nice to meet you.
14:42Nice to meet you.
14:42We'll see you guys.
14:43Be safe, man.
14:49So we're going to maintain our distance from it.
14:51Just try to get a better idea of its size.
14:58From which direction it's headed.
15:03I think this is about as close as we're going to get.
15:19Look at this guy.
15:21It's very comforting to see these planes overhead,
15:25because I know these are the smoke jumpers.
15:27These are the best of the best.
15:28These are the Navy SEALs of the firefighting world that
15:31are dropping in, and they're going to be able to figure out
15:33what to do on this fire and what resources are going to be
15:36needed going forward.
15:37I'm watching these guys coming down,
15:50and there's fire all around us, and there's not great places
15:54for them to land.
15:56I'm going to be there to make sure that if they're landing in spots,
15:59I can help them out.
16:20I'm watching these guys coming down,
16:21and there's fire all around us.
16:23You guys good?
16:36Yeah.
16:37OK.
16:40Is he good?
16:41He's good.
16:42Dude, that was terrifying.
16:46You guys came down fast.
16:53Along with them dropping out of the planes, they're dropping the tools that they use to
17:15fight fires. Shovels, rakes, Pulaski's. Pulaski's are a combination, pickaxe, shovel, rake. It's a really unique tool that firefighters use to fight wildland fire.
17:35How's it going, man? How are you? Good. Was that pretty scary coming down? Yeah, that was bad air. Was it? Yeah, that's not how it's supposed to go.
17:43Yeah, you guys, I was like, they're coming down fast. Yeah, yeah, that was bad. That thunder cell parked overhead and it pushes air down. Yeah. Makes the parachute almost better. And you guys aren't supposed to go in the trees, right? No, no. Well, I'm glad everybody's okay. Yeah, me too. Thank you. Right on, thanks.
18:01These smokejumpers, they had a rough landing on the way down. They usually are always able to get it under control in one way or another.
18:10But this wind, it's pretty threatening. These embers that are falling on us right now, we should get out of here.
18:22You can see that tree on fire right there.
18:24How's it going, Jim? Howdy, howdy.
18:36These smokejumpers, about eight of them just jumped in.
18:38I saw them.
18:39So.
18:40They're sending helicopters out, but they're probably going to want me to be with both water bumpers filling their trucks up.
18:46Ask them if they want to utilize it. There's a couple right up here.
18:48So the, the firemen have asked them to bring that 400 gallons down there.
18:55Good. How are you guys?
19:16How's it looking?
19:17Not good.
19:18Not good.
19:20How many guys you guys got on it now?
19:2370.
19:23Probably 200 more on order.
19:28All right.
19:29All right.
19:30Be safe.
19:31He's a part of the local BLM fire crew.
19:37Sounds like they don't have it anywhere under control.
19:40It's surreal.
19:56It's surreal.
19:58To put it in perspective, this looks devastating, but fire cycles are natural.
20:06That mountainside, I mean, we just drove over the top of that mountain, burned 15 years ago, and it's incredible habitat.
20:14Animals are really resilient.
20:15And the good thing is that BLM's on it, and the guys that know what they're doing are up there fighting it, so I'm going to take off.
20:24Are you calling Bullhead and telling them that you're on the water?
20:43Yeah.
20:43All right, I'm going to head south.
20:47Christopher Walther, game warden lieutenant.
20:49Today, I'll be working with game warden Cavazos.
20:53He's a fairly new warden.
20:55For a new warden to have the opportunity to work in this environment, the experience is invaluable.
21:01We're going to be on separate patrol boats, but if something does occur, then he's very close where I can either assist him or he can assist me.
21:08Is that, oh, that's on land.
21:15Reno, 3411.
21:173411, I just took from a Bullhead to the officer who states there's an accident by North Davis Camp, so would you be able to head that way?
21:25At 10-4, myself, 3416, we'll be counting on the water.
21:29We'll head up there.
21:30Hear that?
21:31Yeah, North Davis Camp.
21:32Yeah, let's head up there.
21:38The Colorado River in Laughlin is always busy.
21:42We launch the boats usually sometime late morning, and we are usually not surprised if we have an incident occur right as we launch.
21:54Two PWCs collided with injuries.
21:57Unknown extensive injuries.
21:59Since where I got visual, I have two ambulances on scene.
22:02You can show me.
22:02When the call comes over radio of a PwC incident, a PwC is also known as a personal watercraft or a jet ski.
22:13There's not a lot of protection for those occupants on those vessels, so the first thing that runs through our mind is, okay, how bad are the injuries going to be in this incident?
22:22Hey, is he involved?
22:36I saw what happened.
22:38Okay, don't go anywhere.
22:39I need to get a statement from you.
22:40Who's involved?
22:43This guy right here?
22:48Come here.
22:49Okay, what happened?
22:50Okay, look to the ambulance, see if we get information from the individual in the ambulance.
22:59Okay.
23:00Get the extent of his injuries.
23:01Do you have your ID handy?
23:02Yeah.
23:03Go get your ID, okay?
23:05Is that the ski right there?
23:06Yeah.
23:06That's your ski?
23:09When we approach an incident like this, we look at the damage that has occurred, a quick witness account of who was doing what and where they were at.
23:18Where did he hit you?
23:19On the side, I think.
23:21Okay, where on here?
23:22Show me.
23:25On the side of the story, one ski was crossing while the other ski was going upriver.
23:37How fast do you think you were going?
23:39Like 10, because I go with my kids.
23:4210 miles per hour?
23:42Yeah.
23:43Your son was on here?
23:44Your boy or a girl?
23:45My son.
23:46Where's he at?
23:48Is he okay?
23:49Is he okay?
23:50Yeah, he's okay.
23:50Okay.
23:51All right, just hang tight.
23:52Don't go anywhere.
23:52So I got that ski over there.
23:56I got his contract, his ID.
23:58This is the other ski here.
24:00We need to run that.
24:01My other guy's getting information from the two victims, apparently that are both juveniles and the ambulances.
24:07Okay.
24:07Just need to know the extent of their injuries and as much contact information as possible.
24:11If you want to help him with that, see what he's done.
24:13Okay.
24:17Right now, 3411 dry.
24:19This is going to be Arizona.
24:20Three, four, two.
24:233411.
24:24Clear, go ahead.
24:26Two, five, and ten, the body name.
24:29Uh, so he turns with 11 inches and rain to a...
24:32Why are you at this ski?
24:34Huh?
24:34Do you own this?
24:45Why are you at this ski?
24:47Huh?
24:47Do you own this?
24:48Yeah.
24:48Is it a rental?
24:49No.
24:50Okay.
24:51Just do me a favor.
24:51Just get back a second, all right?
24:52I got to get some pictures.
24:55Arena, 3411.
24:59What do you have from the juveniles?
25:00Any extent of injuries at this point?
25:07Uh, no, no extent of injuries.
25:09Okay.
25:10Hold on a minute.
25:18Habla ingles?
25:19Yeah.
25:19So this is your ski?
25:20Yeah.
25:20Do you have the paperwork on it?
25:21Yeah.
25:23Who is operating this?
25:25Your cousin?
25:27Okay.
25:28Do you write English well?
25:30Uh, no.
25:30Not very well.
25:31Not very well?
25:32No.
25:32What's up, bud?
25:33What's your name?
25:34Can you write me a witness statement?
25:36Or just have your dad...
25:38He knows more.
25:39Okay.
25:39So I'm going to get you a piece of paper,
25:41and I'm going to have him tell you exactly what happened,
25:44and you just write it down.
25:45All right.
25:45Copy that?
25:46Yes.
25:46All right.
25:47Hang tight for me.
25:47It's a PwC-on-PwC incident.
25:54Looks like a T-bone, most likely.
25:56One individual, he remained on scene.
25:58Usually they just take off.
26:00It seems like a pretty simple just miscommunication
26:03of what the other ski was doing.
26:05Obviously, one ski's at fault, one ski's at hot.
26:07So we're just trying to figure out what exactly happened.
26:09He was riding with you?
26:11This one?
26:12You?
26:12Come here.
26:13How old are you?
26:15Okay.
26:16And your dad was operating?
26:17How fast do you think he was going?
26:2116 miles per hour?
26:23Okay.
26:28Okay.
26:28So they were doing circles?
26:32Okay.
26:33So in your experience,
26:36whose fault do you think it was?
26:37So yesterday, I got a call from our dispatch.
27:04Some people that had called in said that they had hit a hawk on the interstate out here just east of Elko.
27:09I met up with these folks, and his wings were still kind of stuck out of the grill, and so were his talons, his feet, and his head were still kind of out the little hole that he went through in the grill.
27:20You know, when they hit him, it just broke a hole small enough for his body to actually go through, which was amazing to me that he was still alive.
27:29I took and I broke a bunch of this plastic grill off to where I was able to make a hole to be able to pull him out of there.
27:36And it looks to me to be a cooper's hawk.
27:39He was able to puncture holes through the gloves that I was wearing and actually got me on the thumb with one of his talons.
27:46Are you going to be nice to me today?
28:00Got a hold of my fingers pretty good with his talons.
28:03It's always the talons and always the wings that they check just to make sure that they have full functionality of them.
28:09That's what they use to hunt.
28:11His talons still work good.
28:13This wing, it's still functioning really good.
28:15They'll put them wings out and they'll try to make themselves really big.
28:19His left wing is the one that I'm more concerned about.
28:22I think that one's the one that took the most of the damage.
28:25And I can't feel any broken bones inside there at all.
28:28We'll take him out to Spring Creek to a place out here that's got water and trees and release him out there and hopefully it'll survive.
28:38He's got plenty of fight.
28:46Oh, good sign pointing towards a positive thing for him.
28:49I'm just going to put him over closer to the stream.
29:16That way he's got a little bit of water right there and hopefully he'll be able to shade up and recover a little bit easier over here.
29:23I feel a lot better with him being kind of underneath that tree and right here by both of these little streams.
29:38At least he'll have constant water right in there and there's going to be plenty of food here.
29:42And it's going to be a quiet area for it to be able to just kind of relax, recuperate, and hopefully take off and fly.
29:56Isn't it?
29:59Yeah, it sounds good, Jason.
30:02I'll head that way and see what we can come up with.
30:06Thanks, I appreciate it.
30:08Bye.
30:12I just received a call from a landowner telling me that he found a dead elk on his property.
30:17He can kind of see some holes in the hide, but he's not certain if it's been shot or not.
30:23If it's a bull elk, there's a potential somebody could have poached it and maybe they're leaving it there
30:28and they're going to try to come back and get the head at a later time.
30:31Or maybe it died of natural causes.
30:34What a shame.
30:53Oh, yeah.
30:56Look at how big the feet are.
30:58Yeah.
30:58What do you think about the bull?
31:00It's big enough that it could be an exit wound.
31:05A lot of times whenever something dies, you know, and the birds start picking at it, they'll usually go for a spot that, you know, a soft spot.
31:12If there was a bullet hole there, that very easily could be, you know, a spot where they would have picked around, you know, picking into there.
31:20If I find out that this elk has been shot, it's potentially a felony unlawful harvest of a big game mammal.
31:27They could also have been hunting on private property without landowner permission and the waste of a big game.
31:33That's a pretty, pretty big violation.
31:35They have to come clear it because our chopper line is on top.
31:38On the top of that ridge?
31:40Okay.
31:40And you did hear shooting back up here?
31:43About a month ago.
31:43About a month ago.
31:44And shot.
31:45That is crazy.
31:46I just can't believe that nothing's touched him.
32:03That's what's crazy to me.
32:04It makes you wonder if there's something that it actually did ingest that was toxic.
32:10Directionality-wise, it looks like he was walking this way to a little bit thicker tree cover.
32:14Possibly to lay down.
32:17Pretty good hole in the front end of it.
32:19I'll just run the metal detector over and see what we come up with.
32:22If it ends up being something that somebody shot, we'll definitely see what we can come up with because this is, it's a shame.
32:29All right, well, we're going to let you do your thing.
32:33I see a couple of holes in this elk.
32:35It's been laying here for quite a while.
32:36I'm going to get my metal detector out, see if I can't find, you know, bullet fragments, a possible bullet laying somewhere close to the elk.
32:46Maybe the birds have picked through it and they were able to find the bullet.
32:49And a lot of times, if they do, they'll spit it out really pretty close to the carcass.
32:53If somebody was to shoot an animal, a lot of times they're going to try to shoot it to kill it.
32:59So most likely your bullet, you know, if you do have a bullet in there, you're going to either recover it, you know, in that ribcage area.
33:07A lot of times they're going to be trying to shoot for vitals.
33:10Sometimes you'll get false hits on some of this stuff too.
33:13So it always ends up getting like a false hit off the femur bone.
33:16Seems like these larger bone structures.
33:18I'm not getting anything there at all.
33:28I'm not getting any hits.
33:30I'm not getting any hits.
33:48It's getting a hit a few times right in here.
33:52I think it's just a false hit.
33:53But what I'm doing right now is I'm peeling this layer back.
33:56I'll run the metal detector over it again to make sure that it was just that, a false hit.
34:08I think I can be relatively safe to say that there's nothing there.
34:11You can see that this bull had a ton of rumen and hardly any of it is digested, which makes
34:18me think that there was possibly something that he ingested that triggered his brain to
34:23make him think that he wasn't getting enough food and like he wasn't digesting it at all
34:29and just basically gorged himself to death almost.
34:33I'm not getting any hits with the metal detector.
34:35I'm not seeing any broken bones.
34:36I can't completely rule it out, but I can almost say with 95% confidence that this elk
34:44died of natural causes versus being shot.
34:47I think we'll leave it at that and tell the biologists where it's at if they want to come
34:51out and take a look at it.
35:03Nope.
35:04This is Nick.
35:05Hey, Nick.
35:06What's going on?
35:06Hey, not a whole lot.
35:07What's happening, Matt?
35:08You got a dead bull elk over there.
35:10Yeah, there's a dead bull up here on Cronin's property.
35:13Do you want me to take any sample of the rumen?
35:16You know, if it's not too gross.
35:18Yeah, it's not bad, Matt.
35:19I mean, it's a little bit wet, but I can take it.
35:21Cut a femur and the head off.
35:23That'd be great.
35:24Because the head of the femur can harbor some bacteria.
35:26That's not a problem, Matt.
35:27I can go back up there and cut the head off and I can cut you a section of femur out and get
35:33you a sample, so.
35:34Yeah, perfect.
35:35These dang elk, we've got to figure this stuff out.
35:37Perfect.
35:38I really appreciate it.
35:39Thanks.
35:39Yep, not a problem, Matt.
35:40All right.
35:41All right.
35:41Bye.
35:42It's good for the biologist to be able to get samples like this.
35:45I mean, maybe he knows of an outbreak of larkspur.
35:48Larkspur is toxic to elk.
35:51He's going to be able to get these samples into the wildlife lab and they'll be able to
35:55get the results back to him.
35:57And then he'll be able to know what it is that he's looking at.
35:59With the samples that we got and the samples they got from that cow, we could get a little
36:02bit closer to finding an answer of what's killing these elk here.
36:05Who's spot do you think it was?
36:19I think it was them, because we were going, like, from everywhere.
36:23Just straight?
36:25Okay.
36:26Were you scared?
36:27Yeah.
36:27Do you have your life jacket on?
36:29Yeah.
36:29I put it over there.
36:30Okay.
36:31All right, man.
36:31What grade are you going into?
36:32You get a six?
36:33What do you want to do when you grow up?
36:35I want to be a six.
36:36No.
36:37Come on.
36:37You're just saying that because I'm here.
36:38No.
36:38Because I'm not my one and I felt a good.
36:41I'm pretty good.
36:42Okay.
36:42Good.
36:42I'm going to be a better thing.
36:43So the rest of the day, you tell your dad to be careful, huh?
36:46Okay.
36:48How was his witness statement?
36:50His statement was, the cousin and brother on the ski.
36:53Yep.
36:54They were going up this way, circled back.
36:57Uh-huh.
36:58Then they were on the other side of the river, about to come over here to park the ski.
37:01Okay.
37:01The other ski was coming upriver, and they turned to port.
37:04Yeah.
37:05That's how.
37:06When an individual who's operating a PwC is at fault for an incident, in some instances,
37:11they will receive a citation for a violation of the rules of the road or a Coast Guard
37:14navigable rule.
37:15If we find that we can't really determine who was at fault, usually those issues will
37:21be resolved via civil court and or they'll have to deal with the rental company for damage
37:26to the PwC that occurred.
37:27We're going to have to take a ride over to the hospital and get as much information from
37:31every side as possible in order to do a thorough, complete investigation.
37:34We're going to head back out on patrol now.
37:41Hey!
38:05Get out of the way.
38:07Get out of the way.
38:07Hey!
38:09Hey!
38:11Get out of the way.
38:19Hey!
38:20Hey!
38:22Get out of the way.
38:25Ma'am.
38:26Yeah, we got it.
38:27You got a life jacket on, right?
38:30Okay, so you're good.
38:30Relax, okay?
38:32Nepal, come tie up on my port side.
38:34Ma'am.
38:35Ma'am, just relax.
38:36Just relax, okay?
38:37We're going to help you.
38:38All right?
38:38To be floating in the Colorado River is, it's quite dangerous.
38:42Even if you have a life jacket on, there's so much chop sometimes that they may not see
38:48you bobbing up and down, and you could potentially get run over by a PwC.
38:52I want you to turn around and hold on to my boat, okay?
38:55Give me your hand.
38:56Okay?
38:56Hold it.
38:591, 2, 3.
39:003.
39:012, 3.
39:013, 4.
39:023, 4, 3, 3, J.
39:083, 4, 3, 4, 3, 4, 3.
39:093, 4, 3, 4, 3, 4, 4.
39:12The current is usually six to eight miles per hour.
39:35For operators who don't have a lot of experience on a PWC,
39:39if they end up stopping and getting
39:41to turn sideways in that current,
39:43it will usually throw off their center of gravity
39:45and they bounce and they'll fall over the water.
39:46So a lot of our day is spent picking up people
39:49and or overturning PWCs that they have fallen off of.
39:52So it's just part of the job that we do
39:54and it does happen quite frequently.
40:023411, can you confirm the subject is Code 4
40:06and if there's any specific equipment they'll need to bring?
40:10He's up right now, Code 4.
40:12Just making sure he's trying to get to the land.
40:21Just float.
40:22Just float down.
40:30Carry him.
40:30Just go to shore.
40:31No, no, no, no, no, no.
40:35Cancel Code 4.
40:36No, no, no, no, no.
40:38No, no, no, no, no.
40:39No, no, no, no.
40:40No, no, no, no, no.
40:41So what happened?
40:42Steve made this real quick.
40:43So he fell off to Steve.
40:46And so I went over there to help him out.
40:48Yeah.
40:49You know, I was trying to just talk him through
40:50getting on the ladder, but she wasn't able to get on the ladder.
40:54That's when you kind of showed up, OK?
40:57That's when you kind of showed up, OK?
40:59We could have gotten her on if she helped.
41:02Yeah.
41:02She was not healthy.
41:04He wasn't holding my hand.
41:06Any day in Laughlin, incidents are going to occur.
41:08But as long as we're out there and we're trying to help the public
41:12and enforce recreational boating safety, I mean,
41:14that's all you can do.
41:16Crisis avoided.
