00:00Seattle, Don King, Jake LaMotta, Cleveland Williams, Sonny Liston, Ron Lyle, were all men who had prison backgrounds.
00:09But they were not stripped and they were allowed to pursue a titleship career.
00:13I'm presently in the courts seeking appeals and I'm sure that in the final analysis I'll be vindicated.
00:20I would like my fans to know, the viewers of NBC, that I have not quit.
00:24I believe I'm quitting and I'm winning and I'm winning and I'm winning and I'm winning and I'm still pursuing the lightweight title.
00:29I thank you for your watching this show and your time. God bless you.
00:34But it should be pointed out that all the people mentioned by James Scott took part in boxing after they served their time.
00:46Following tomorrow's baseball game, James Scott, the most feared boxer in the light heavyweight division, returns.
00:52Scott, considered an animal at the sound of the bell, has trained hard and is ready to throw thunder.
00:55A live scheduled 10-round bout behind bars tomorrow on NBC Sports World.
01:02On the third baseline, the base.
01:04Mike Rossman just a few months ago.
01:07Two ranked light heavyweights battle tomorrow, 5 o'clock Eastern time, right here on NBC Sports World.
01:13And then don't forget Sunday.
01:14James Scott, an inmate there, and I am picking Braxton.
01:25It might be the first time you're right all year.
01:26By way of explanation, we have had...
01:35Live from Raleway State Prison.
01:39He trains here.
01:40He eats here.
01:40He sleeps here.
01:42This man, James Scott, the most feared boxer in the light heavyweight division, returns.
01:46Be there for a live scheduled 10-round bout behind bars next on NBC Sports World.
01:50Difference, uh, in me getting ahead of the hitters, and it's made a big difference.
01:55Scott here are Marv Albert and Ferdie Pacheco.
02:02Here at Raleway State Prison, Marv Albert along with the fight, Dr. Ferdie Pacheco.
02:06And coming up later on on NBC Sports World, a matchup of light heavyweights, James Scott and Dwight Braxton.
02:12Now, Ferdie, the last time we saw James Scott on NBC television was back in May of 1980.
02:18He was upset by Jerry Bull Martin, a bout that catapulted Martin into a title shot.
02:23Scott did fight Lee Royster here at Raleway in early August.
02:27Did stop Royster in the seventh round.
02:29But a lot of folks feel that Scott may be shot.
02:31He's said to be 33 years old.
02:33At least Scott says he's 33.
02:34Others think he is older.
02:36The question is, is Scott finished?
02:39And that's a question that is going to be answered today.
02:41He's going to be facing a great amount of physical pressure from Dwight Braxton,
02:45who is a mauling, physical type of fighter.
02:48They don't like each other.
02:49They're going to try to inflict quite a beating on each other.
02:51The problem now comes for James Scott as he overtrained.
02:55A man that goes over 30 years of age, and he's well past 33, many people say, penalizes himself.
03:01He gets overtrained.
03:02He leaves it in the gym.
03:03That's terrible because he runs out of gas.
03:06Also hasn't fought for 14 months.
03:07Royster, throw that out.
03:08That's just a little tune-up fight.
03:10That's a gym fight.
03:11So Scott faces big problems today with Dwight Braxton.
03:14Dwight has his own set of problems, Iver, because Scott's one of those guys that doesn't quit.
03:19He's still there when you think he should quit.
03:20He's still there fighting, as Jerry Martin found out in the 10th round when Scott just kept coming.
03:25Can Scott be over-anxious in that there is so much on the line in this bout coming off 14 months of inactivity?
03:32Unquestionably.
03:32I think both of them have a lot on the line.
03:34Braxton has a title shot on the line.
03:37I think Scott feels this very deeply.
03:39He feels this is his last chance.
03:41If he fails here, he may never get on national television again or may never fight again in this prison.
03:46So it's very, very important for James Scott.
03:49So James Scott, Dwight Braxton, a matchup of all-action light heavyweights, both world-ranked.
03:56It's coming up on NBC's Sports World.
04:00Starting all the ways, he pitched the Montreal Expos to a 5-2 victory over the Houston Astros today.
04:06Snap away on Dwight Braxton once again, Marv Albert and Dr. Ferdy Pacheco.
04:10The setting is Raleway State Prison and upcoming on NBC's Sports World.
04:17Light heavyweights, James Scott and Dwight Braxton.
04:20Hi, everybody.
04:20I'm Marv Albert, along with the fight doctor, Ferdy Pacheco.
04:23James Scott, after 14 months of inactivity, fought a tune-up against Lee Royster in early August here at Raleway.
04:30Came away with a victory, stopping Royster in the seventh round.
04:33Dwight Braxton comes off a knockout of Mike Brossom back in May and is in line for a possible title shot against Matthew Saad Muhammad.
04:42And Ferdy is one who has worked the corner of James Scott.
04:46I would think you have to wonder about Braxton's strategy.
04:48He says he's going to go right at him at the start.
04:52He's got to.
04:52He's got to neutralize the size disparity.
04:55James Scott is much taller than he is.
04:57He has two or three inches in reach, and he knows how to box from outside.
05:01Braxton has to come in.
05:03He's got to come in close.
05:04He's got to work to the body.
05:05He's got to tire him out.
05:06He's got to see if he is indeed, as they are claiming, a shot fighter,
05:10because a heavy body attack will stop Scott in the early rounds, and then he can work the way he wants to.
05:15I don't think it's that easy to come in.
05:17Scott knows that's a strategy.
05:19He'll pick him apart coming in.
05:20How do you explain Braxton taking this fight?
05:24Possibility of Matthew Saad Muhammad waiting in the wings.
05:26Why would he come here to Railway State Prison to fight a guy that, even if he wins, he doesn't get that much out of it?
05:33Well, Scott's ranked above him.
05:35Scott is the man to beat, but I agree with you.
05:38It seems foolish to come in here, and I question the strategy of his manager for accepting the fight.
05:43On the other hand, he's just another fighter.
05:45He's got to fight somebody.
05:46The money is good.
05:48The national exposure is good, and if he wins here, there's no question but that he is the number one guy standing in front of Saad Muhammad.
05:54All right, so James Scott, Dwight Braxton, action-packed light heavyweights, and all the action is upcoming on NBC Sports World.
06:03Marv Albert, Cody Pacheco will be back later on.
06:11Again, our final score today, Montreal 5, Houston 2.
06:14The executive producer of NBC Sports is Don Ohlmeyer.
06:17The coordinating producer of baseball is Michael Weissman.
06:19The telecast of today's game has been produced by Kenneth Edmondson, directed by Andy Rosenberg, associate director.
06:28Beyond Q6.
06:29Today on Sports World, the Peacock's Behind Bars.
06:37Yes, live from Broadway State Prison.
06:41It's a 10-round crossroads battle in the light heavyweight ranks.
06:45Inmate James Scott, ranked fourth by Ring Magazine, needs this fight to stay alive in the boxing world.
06:51Scott, serving a son since 1975, has a ring record of 19-1-1 with 11 knockouts.
06:58His opponent, White Braxton, an up-and-coming light heavyweight, currently ranked seventh, could get a shot at the title if he gets the verdict over Scott.
07:08Braxton returns behind the mustard-colored walls of Broadway, where he spent five and a half years.
07:14That's all today on NBC's Sports World.
07:18This is NBC Sports World, and today it's brought to you by Make-A-L-O-B-Light.
07:42An exceptional light beer, with a rich, smooth taste.
07:46By the 1981 Volkswagen, Volkswagen does it again.
07:51By the incredible Vic Shaver, just one Vic gives you days and days of close, comfortable shaves.
07:58And by Federal Express, when it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight, Federal Express.
08:05My name is Dwight Braxton.
08:24They're always asking me why I come into Rawway State Prison.
08:27It's simple, to fight another man.
08:29A so-called animal, not a real animal.
08:32A so-called killer, not a real killer.
08:34Just another man.
08:35And it's going to be a fight.
08:37I always sure, but it will be a fight.
08:39Don't touch that dial.
08:41It's not going to be a long fight.
08:42You're not going to have a chance to turn the TV set down or turn it up,
08:45or go to the bathroom and get any solos or anything.
08:48Don't leave the TV set.
08:49This is it.
08:50Me and Dwight Braxton.
08:51And after I beat Braxton, I want to fight solid.
08:55And this is the Rawway State Prison of Maximum Security Facility in Rawway, New Jersey,
09:01located some 30 miles outside of New York City.
09:04It is the home of James Scott, always a controversial figure.
09:07It is the former home of White Braxton, who could be in line for a title shot.
09:12And these are two guys who don't like each other.
09:15That is the setting here at Rawway.
09:18Hi, everybody.
09:19I'm Mark Albert, along with the fight doctor, Ferdy Pacheco.
09:22And, Ferdy, what effect will the bad feelings have on such a matchup?
09:27It's maybe one of the key points to this fight.
09:29These two are top professional fighters.
09:31If they let their feelings get involved and it affects it into a brawl,
09:35it can only help Scott, not Dwight Braxton.
09:38Scott is a brawler and a street fighter.
09:39The last time we saw James Scott here on NBC was back in May of 1980.
09:46And the boxing world was stunned because Scott was knocked down twice by Jerry O. Martin.
09:53And Martin went on to win by decision here in Rawway.
09:57Scott has had a tune-up since then, an unimpressive showing against Junior Royster at the Rawway State Prison.
10:05Dwight Braxton, on the other hand, comes off a knockout of Mike Rossman back in May.
10:11And Braxton has to feel awfully good coming off that type of performance.
10:16That really is a boost for him, and it's going to make a world of difference in his confidence.
10:20I will be hearing from James Scott and Dwight Braxton when we return here on NBC's Sports World in just a moment.
10:29There are a lot of light.
10:33Compare the taste.
10:36Ten tough, mean beards.
10:38Ten tough beards.
10:39How many shaves can you get?
10:41The Dallas Morning News.
10:44Shave spells 100% relief.
10:47It all starts tomorrow.
10:48The season premiere of exciting NFL football kicks off with Brian Gumbel and NFL 81.
10:53Followed by a dynamite doubleheader featuring powerful running back Earl Campbell and the Houston Oilers
10:57against the Los Angeles Rams.
10:59Check local listings.
11:03Back at Rawway State Prison, we are closing in on fight time.
11:07And getting back to a point we mentioned a moment ago that Dwight Braxton and James Scott are not exactly fond of each other.
11:13The other day at the press conference, Braxton made the point that Scott still owes him $400 for sparring sessions when they were both inmates here at Rawway.
11:23Yeah, that's the kind of thing that they are throwing at each other.
11:26They really don't like each other and don't like each other with a great deal of intensity, which means it could become a brawl.
11:31A brawl for the public is that a boxing match is controlled mayhem, but a brawl, all rules are out the window.
11:38You hit with your elbow, you step on the guy's foot.
11:40The key to a brawl and keeping it within the rules of boxing is a referee.
11:44Here we don't have a problem.
11:45We've got the greatest young referee in the country, Larry Hazard, a man whose activity is so great that he keeps a brawl from happening.
11:53He's got his hands full because these two guys don't like each other.
11:55They're very tough, but I don't think we'll see a brawl in that sense as long as Larry Hazard is allowed his head.
12:02All right, earlier, Ferdy had an opportunity to talk with both Braxton and Scott.
12:07Dwight, you had an impressive victory over Mike Rossman, and everyone in boxing is looking forward to your title fight with Saad Mohamed.
12:16Now, they say you're in line for a title fight end of this year, beginning of next year.
12:19Why in the world would you come in to Raway State Penitentiary to fight a fierce, ferocious, desperate fighter like James Scott?
12:27Well, first of all, right, there's nothing definite about Saad Mohamed.
12:32You understand, and there's nothing, you know, really on paper, you know.
12:35But the reason why I come here is because I don't fear James Scott.
12:39Like, he's just like any other fighter to me.
12:41Does it bother you to fight inside the walls?
12:44No, it doesn't bother me.
12:45I've been here before.
12:46I did time here, you know, which is nothing to brag about and nothing to be proud of, right?
12:50There seems to be some indication of bad blood between you and Scott.
12:53At the press conference the other day, it was more than just show business needling.
12:57Is there something going on between you two?
12:59You dislike him?
13:00I don't hate no one, right, but I dislike his image.
13:04There's a little bit of animosity the public thinks between you and Dwight Braxton is.
13:08You feel any of that?
13:09No, I don't feel any animosity.
13:11I just feel I've got to do a job, and he's got to do a job.
13:13I think the job that I'm going to do is win.
13:16What if you don't win?
13:17It'd just about be the end of your boxing aspiration.
13:19That's the wrong question.
13:20What do you mean, what if I don't win?
13:21Right now, I want to fight Saad or Spinks.
13:25We don't have to fight for their title.
13:26They can keep their title.
13:28In fact, I'd rather fight Saad because he's the one that thinks that the championship shouldn't be brought into the prison.
13:33So we don't have to fight for the championship.
13:35Just fight for the public.
13:37Let the public determine who's the real champion, me and Saad.
13:39So it'll be James Scott with a record of 19-1-1, 11 by knockout, going up against this man, Dwight Braxton, 14-1 with one draw, 8 by knockout.
13:52We'll have round one right after these words.
14:04The United States absolutely positively.
14:39I want you both to stop punching, step back.
14:41Case of a knockdown.
14:42Fighters score a knockdown.
14:43Retire the father's neutral corner.
14:45Three knockdowns in one round.
14:46He's beating the Royals by the score of 2-1.
14:48However, fight a knockdown must take a mandatory eight count.
14:51Harry Hazard, the referee, providing the instructions for James Scott and Dwight Braxton.
14:57Braxton, 28 years old, from Canton, New Jersey.
15:04Scott says he's 33 years old, an inmate here at Rawway State Prison.
15:10He is serving a life sentence for murder and a 30- to 40-year term for armed robbery.
15:17Braxton began his boxing career at Joe Frazier's gym in Philadelphia.
15:20As you look at James Scott, Braxton spent five and a half years here in Rawway State Prison.
15:27Finished his term in 1978.
15:29Braxton was here for armed robbery.
15:33Braxton ran across the ring.
15:35James, no question.
15:36He's trying to take it to him.
15:38James Scott has decided to get on a bicycle for this first ring around, which is not characteristic of Scott.
15:46Braxton told us he would go right at Scott, and he is following along the lines of that strategy.
16:01Scott apparently satisfied with trying to confuse Braxton by not messing it up with him at the very beginning.
16:07Both Scott and Braxton are swambers.
16:12Braxton likes to get in close.
16:14Has a very effective cap.
16:18Braxton is really charged up.
16:20He's almost snorting fire through his nostril.
16:23He is really charged up.
16:26Scott, on the other hand, seems very cool, very determined to dance away this first round
16:30and upset the balance and the plan of Dwight Braxton.
16:33Come on, let's go.
16:42Come on, let's go.
16:42I got this.
16:43Step up.
16:48Under the New Jersey State Athletic Commission rules,
16:51the three knockdown rule has been waived,
16:54only the referee can stop the foul.
16:55And the bell cannot save the fighter, only in the attempt at the final round.
17:00Scoring round by round by the referee and the two judges.
17:04If the round is even, they would go to the supplemental five-point system.
17:11Very uncharacteristic first round for James Scott.
17:14Not willing to mix it up.
17:15He must feel he's got great legs to carry that goal for ten rounds.
17:19And they are both attempting intimidating devices.
17:25A lot of smiling.
17:27Not sincere smiles.
17:28No.
17:30Less than a better day in round one.
17:33Step up for ten.
17:38Okay, that's great.
17:39Step back.
17:39First good exchange of the fight.
17:48Both men exchange hard wallops.
18:00Dwight Braxton has been the aggressor from the start of this first round.
18:04This is not the way this fight's going to be, however.
18:06Scott's going to stop and fight here pretty soon.
18:09Next round, the next one.
18:14And we are final seconds.
18:16Round one.
18:19Move.
18:23When you reach it, Bob Adams, it's still working.
18:27I told you it's new old spice solid.
18:36Well, 30 in round one, we did not see the usual James Scott style of straight-ahead, continuous punching, non-stop action.
18:44And as you mentioned, you expect that to change.
18:47But here is Braxton going right back at Scott who continues to backpedal.
18:51It won't last long.
18:53First of all, he doesn't know how to backpedal and not get caught in the corner.
18:56He's got caught in the corner three or four times.
18:58Scott didn't get caught in the corner.
18:59There's bad news.
19:00He's going to have to fight when Braxton catches him in the corner.
19:05Unless Scott has lost some of his confidence.
19:09No, that doesn't happen.
19:10That's one man that's 100% confident.
19:13It's just sometimes he out-thinks himself.
19:15And the problem I had in the corner was to have him react as an animal all the time.
19:19I just said, forget fighting.
19:21Get to be an animal.
19:21Well, that's where you're strong.
19:22And he's going to have to get down to that to have a chance with Dwight Braxton,
19:26who seems to have it all going his way right now.
19:28You are reflecting back to your days in the corner with James Scott as a physician.
19:35Yes, I worked as his corner man for every fight he ever had, outside and inside prison.
19:40And I know that he is a compact and deadly fighter when he decides to fight.
19:44Right now, he's going to blow these rounds.
19:46Apparently, he's willing to make that gamble, concession, before he starts to fight.
19:51And in his last foul, James Scott looked rusty.
19:59It stopped Junior Royster here at Rowland in early August in what he called a tune-up.
20:05Scott able to get his first good punch in at the fight.
20:08Halfway through, round two.
20:10Woo!
20:10Woo!
20:11Woo!
20:11Woo!
20:12Woo!
20:12Woo!
20:13Woo!
20:13Woo!
20:14Woo!
20:14Woo!
20:15Woo!
20:15Woo!
20:16Woo!
20:16Woo!
20:17Woo!
20:17Woo!
20:18Woo!
20:19Woo!
20:19Woo!
20:20Woo!
20:20Woo!
20:21Woo!
20:21Woo!
20:22Woo!
20:22Braxton continues to smile and haunt at studs.
20:26I'd be smiling, too, but I had a guy running in front of me, not fighting too much.
20:29Woo!
20:29We're up!
20:30We're up!
20:32Graxton's only loss earlier in his career at the hands of Johnny Davis, a man that he beat
20:38in January of this year, winning a two-round decision.
20:41And Braxton comes off for sixth-round knockout of Mike Crosso.
20:44Like, in May, in Atlantic City, he has won sixth of his last eight by knockout.
20:49He's now picking up the fourth-round pick.
20:50That's the James Scott that comes off and begins to fight and flurries exactly what Dwight Braxton wants. He wants to mix it up. He wants to lay it out.
21:09We are live on NBC Sports World.
21:15Mara Belver and the Fight Doctor.
21:20Round two, scheduled for Chad, a matchup of world-ranked light heavyweights.
21:24White Braxton and James Scott.
21:29And that will do it for the second round.
21:36Johnny Rutherford, that's...
21:39Again!
21:43One more second.
21:45For a Michelob Light.
21:46Michelob Light, compare the taste.
21:50And this is round three.
21:54Yeah, it is!
21:56Love it! Love it!
21:58He's got flurries in that last round.
22:01Gave him the round, but it's very close.
22:03Very well given it to Braxton because of his aggressiveness coming forward.
22:10Combination by Scott as Braxton tries to stalk him.
22:15All the stalking in the world doesn't build up points if you're not fighting at the end of the stalking.
22:19But look, if when you get to the end of the road, the other guy does the fighting, he gets the point.
22:24There he is! There he goes!
22:26There he goes!
22:28There he goes!
22:30There he goes!
22:32There he goes!
22:34We're going to start following you up in the right hand.
22:37Those are the flurries that could win the fight.
22:40Six, seven, unanswered punches.
22:42But here's the combination by Braxton!
22:45The best action of the bat, a minute gone by, round three.
23:01Scott laughed at him at the end of that exchange,
23:03which was easily the best of this fight.
23:08Right hand by Braxton, clipped Scott.
23:11Same kind of right hand that Martin dropped him with.
23:14A clear right hand shot.
23:21Scott obviously has a fight plan.
23:23The fans and the convicts are all here saying,
23:26stick to your plan, James, stick to your plan.
23:28So he must have announced his plan.
23:31The interest of this bout at such a fever pitch
23:34shouldn't go to a decision.
23:36The inmates who are here will not be permitted to stay
23:39for the decision. They'll see it on a closed circuit.
23:41There are fears of a possible problem.
23:48I think when emotions are this high, there's always a problem.
23:51And Broadway State Penitentiary has by no means got a monopoly on that.
23:56Less than a minute remaining.
24:03Round three.
24:05Scott able to land.
24:07Although Braxton continues to smile and talk.
24:11All right, let's break up. Step back.
24:12Step back.
24:13Step back.
24:13Step back.
24:14Step back.
24:15Step back.
24:17Step back.
24:18Step back.
24:31Code Scott has had several highly regarded victories,
24:34a win over Yockey Lopez,
24:36over the Ben Eddy Breaker,
24:38who went on to win the WBA light heavyweight championship.
24:40the championship white braxton coming off the run over mike rossman in line for a
24:48title shot that's it for round three you don't need a haircut you know people
24:55the national guard and the reserves talk to your local recruiter
25:01and this is round four white braxton in the blue trunks james scott of the white
25:07murley how do you score to this point so far i've got a two-one braxton in points
25:11and 14 13 and brother 14 13 in points 2-1 in rounds obviously this uh aggressive style of
25:19dwight braxton is going to please the judges but scott is fighting a rather intelligent fight
25:25very uncharacteristic of scott this is not scott's type of fight
25:29scott now trying to go to the body where he does
25:45good exchange
25:49it's almost as if his old self is trying to come out and every time he gets him going he's almost
26:13of his brain is saying to scott now go back to the plan go back to the blast if i was in his
26:18corner i'd be screaming i don't forget the plan and go get dwight braxton
26:32and coming off the unimpressive showing against royster last month i think you could throw that
26:37royster fight out that's just a gym fight that's just one of those things where you want to get to
26:40work and let it last as long as you want
27:01good combination by scott right on the butt one two right on the button
27:04it's not quite braxton but it doesn't seem to face braxton
27:21even going back you've got to fight
27:32it's not quite a good one
27:38solid left hand by white braxton to set it up

28:11as we open up round five let's listen in on the corner of
28:14white braxton
28:24yes i have it even but bear in mind if one of those rounds the second round which went to scott could
28:41easily have gone to dwight because it was aggressive making a three one fight i mean after the um uh miracle of uh two weeks ago
28:48uh that crazy decision that we got with the snipes could see a fight
28:54it was more than two weeks ago
29:02combination by braxton but scott was able to walk away from it
29:16walk away from it
29:22white braxton finding the range with that left hand that was a heavy exchange that's the kind of exchange we all expected when we went into the first round

30:02White's White Braxton in the blue, and James Scott in the white.
30:06And Braxton continues to back Scott out.
30:09Scott is bouncing much less now, as you would expect.
30:13This late middle in the fight, he is not bouncing as much,
30:16and White's able to catch him on the ropes.
30:22Scott says, come on.
30:25As he goes back on the ropes, he says, come on,
30:28it's because the old Scott is coming out.
30:29That's the guy that wants to mix on the ropes.
30:31That's the guy who wants to trade punches.
30:41Left hand by Scott.
30:43He tried to follow with the white, but could not connect.
30:47And a nice spin move by Braxton.
30:55Braxton showing a lot of grit and a lot of desire,
30:58coming on like a tank.
30:59Braxton's stalking style, reminding of the great middleweight Dick Tyson.
31:06And he has been stalking right throughout.
31:09We'll be back right after this message.
31:13Dear Korea.
31:15Available for your home.
31:16Gee whiz.
31:18And now it's on sale.
31:20And this is round six, and we're listening on the corner of James Scott.
31:28James Scott on the white, white Braxton, and the blue.
31:49Braxton has been primarily left hand, and keep in mind that Scott went down.
31:54And the path of Jerry Martin from two overhand rights.
32:00Do you think Braxton's about to set him up?
32:01He's gotten hit several times in this fight with good overhand rights,
32:04but his movement is such that he hasn't been caught flush yet.
32:09It's exactly amazing to me that he's still moving as much as he is.
32:12A reminder to all the first Sunday of the NFL regular season,
32:36the season premiere of NFL 81, Brian Gubble, Pete Axtown will bring you an inside look
32:42at the Raiders NFL crowd, plus a look at the new places,
32:46the new places around the league.
32:47All the inside information on a great doubleheader of NFL action,
32:52featuring the return of the safe catch label,
32:55winning the orders against the LA Rams.
32:57That's tomorrow here on NBC.
33:00Good action, Dwight Braxton has caught James Scott on the road several times
33:05and fired in volleys, punches and fulfilled big punches,
33:09big point spread.
33:11Now what's happening here is that James Scott is digging a great big hole for himself.
33:15He's getting so far behind in his fight.
33:16He's down 3-2, but with this round,
33:19he doesn't look like he's going to start fighting.
33:21And that means a big comeback for him in 7-8-9 and 10.
33:26Like that.
33:34Braxton continues to lay and continues to start stuff.
33:45There's no question Dwight Braxton has dictated the tempo of this fight
33:49and his character is aggressive to a lead
33:51and seems to be getting stronger.
33:54If you're counting punches, there's no contest.
34:10Closing in on the 10-second mark in round 6.
34:17So another good round for Dwight Braxton
34:20will be back in a moment.
34:23Starting tomorrow, the season premiere of exciting NFL football
34:30kicks off with Brian Gumbel in NFL 81,
34:33followed by a dynamite doubleheader featuring powerful running back
34:36Earl Campbell and the Houston Oilers against the Los Angeles Rams.
34:39Next Saturday, slugger Dwight Evans and the Boston Red Sox
34:42take on the New York Yankees.
34:43Or catch Expo excitement as beatster Tim Raines
34:46leave the Montreal Expos against the Chicago Cubs.
34:48Tomorrow and next Saturday on NBC Sports.
34:59Well, before being stripped of his ranking,
35:02James Scott was listed as second among the light heavyweights.
35:06He is currently world ranked out of Newark, New Jersey.
35:10He claims to be 33 years old.
35:13There is a lot of doubt and a lot of area for conjecture there.
35:19There's a lot of mileage on that body,
35:20but he is a health nut and he is a physical fitness freak
35:24and he does nothing but work out.
35:26So therefore, he must feel that he can carry this fight
35:30to the 10th round while bouncing around,
35:32but while he's bouncing, he's losing it.
35:33He's behind four rounds to two.
35:38We are not seeing the same James Scott
35:41that we have seen in previous thoughts.
35:45He's trying to fight an intelligent fight
35:47and that is not James Scott's fight.
35:49His strength is his ample intensity and ferocity
35:52and his never give up spirit.
35:54He just cannot be a boxer win.
35:57On the other hand, Braxton said he's going to wait
36:02at Scott from the start
36:04and he has followed that point.
36:06He certainly has.
36:16Again, Scott doesn't know how to get out of the corner.
36:18Good combination by Braxton.
36:20Halfway point, round seven, scheduled for 10.
36:34Overhand, right, attempted by Scott.
36:39And you get the idea there is much respect
36:42on the part of James Scott for Dwight Braxton.
36:46I don't know if that's respectable.
36:48I just believe he has been a victim of a bad game plan.
36:51He's trying to follow it out.
36:53He's trained for it.
36:53He's trying to follow it out.
36:55And I think that's a mistake.
36:56You just got to go with Braxton and lay it out
36:58because he's taller, he's tougher, he's bigger.
37:01There was no reason for him to bounce around
37:03the first five or six rounds.
37:04He's trying to feel that game plan.
37:06That was dictated by him.
37:07It's a good right hand by Scott.
37:09That's his best punch of the fight.
37:11Now he's doing what I said he should be doing.
37:14He's fighting him.
37:15Punch for punch.
37:16That's the way he should be fighting Braxton.
37:19And the inmates here at Rowey are rooting Scott on.
37:26Braxton back with the left hand.
37:29Less than a minute remaining round seven
37:31as Braxton has come right back.
37:36A cheering section for Dwight Braxton
37:39led by his brother Tony
37:41up-and-coming junior middle of it.
37:43All right, let's go.
37:50Left hook by Scott.
38:04And now it's Braxton showing some signs of weariness.
38:11He is not walking around with that bounce in his legs anymore.
38:22And that will wrap it for round seven.
38:25Who says it's true?
38:30Vitalis says it's true.
38:32A man has to keep himself under control.
38:34I'm under control.
38:39And this is round eight.
38:41James Scott coming off his best round.
38:43How do you score?
38:44Well, I've got it 4-3.
38:46I thought that was Scott's best round.
38:48And I thought Dwight Braxton showed sometimes
38:50some signs of weariness.
38:51He has been chasing the elusive Scott,
38:53but he took a good beating that round.
38:55For the first time, Scott's bombs were landing right on it,
38:58flush on the target.
39:00James Scott, an awesome physical condition.
39:02He runs eight to nine miles a day,
39:04does 200 sit-ups,
39:06a thousand push-ups a day.
39:09His day, aside from his present activities,
39:12is a stark existence.
39:14But that could take its toll on Braxton
39:17and the later hours, we'll see.
39:19This is one of the hardest fights to score
39:21because no question about it,
39:22Dwight Braxton's been the aggressor.
39:23He's making the fight.
39:25But James Scott is picking his times to fight
39:28and he stops and fights.
39:29Just when you think the fight's getting away from him,
39:31he pulls up close.
39:32Now he's bouncing and running away again.
39:37Double left hook.
39:38Five.
39:39What can I say now?
39:41Good job.
39:41The one I'm afraid.
39:42So Braxton has come out ahead of Chris's face.
40:00Braxton winning the first part of this round.
40:02He's, he, he, uh, takes command right at the early part.
40:06Scott should have come out and challenged him
40:08right at the very beginning of this round,
40:09just like he left off.
40:11Oh, interestingly, Braxton,
40:13who does not have the reach advantage of Frank Scott,
40:18whooped the reach advantage
40:18by some three and a half inches.
40:21Nevertheless, he's out-jabbing Scott.
40:25He's closing the distance.
40:26He's really getting in there with his legs.
40:32He's out-punching Scott.
40:32He's out-speeding Scott right now.
40:35This is seesawing back and forth.
40:40Less than a minute romantic for round eight.
40:44Mark Harper, Kertie Pacheco.
40:47Rollway State Prison.
40:48Rollway, New Jersey, live on NBC's Sports Forum.
40:52Mike Braxton, he got his boxing career at Jerry Frazier's Gymnasium.
41:04Philadelphia spent five and a half years here at Rollway for armed robbery.
41:10But unlike his brother, Tony,
41:24does not consider himself part of Rollway's boxing program.
41:28Although he and James Scott know one another very well
41:34from their days here at Rollway.
41:36We'll be back after this work.
41:39If you're looking at this, Buds, for you.
41:44And this is wild nine,
41:46and we may have reached the point
41:48where James Scott will need a knockout
41:51to pull this one out.
41:52I believe so.
41:54Of course, in the crazy world of boxing scoring,
41:57you can't really tell.
41:59But I cannot see how he can win.
42:01It's the best he can get as a draw
42:02if he takes it to the next two rounds.
42:06Mike Braxton in the blue.
42:09James Scott in the white.
42:10James Scott in the white.
42:11James Scott in the white.
42:19Among those in attendance,
42:21Eddie Mustafa Muhammad,
42:23who Scott beat here at Rollway's going prison
42:27about that propelled Scott to national recognition.
42:32And that was promoted by the same man
42:34who promoted this, Giran Muhammad,
42:35who started this whole prison program thing
42:37with the then-warden hat rack.
42:39He just won't get away from getting the best of all the
42:56exchanges taking the early parts of these rounds.
42:58Braxton with an uppercut and continues to win the battle inside despite the scott's height of
43:16the next goal.
43:17Braxton is only 5-7 for a half, scott's 16.
43:21Braxton.
43:28Braxton will end up doing mayhem.
43:31Braxton doing a terrific job.
43:36Letting these guys go out into close quarters.
43:40Brape right hand by Scott.
43:43Another brape right hander just misses.
43:47Less than a minute remaining.
43:49Scott says, come on.
44:05Scott not able to connect.
44:07He tried a couple of uppercats.
44:12Scott had a brief moment where it looked like he had Dwight Braxton going with combinations,
44:16lefts and rights, but he's backed off now.
44:19And there's the ever-present Dwight Braxton working away.
44:23Ever-present with that left hand.
44:26Is he a busy fighter and is he tough?
44:28I think he and Saad Muhammad would be an excellent light heavyweight championship fight.
44:37And we will stay right here.
44:39And rowing between Rod's right hand by Braxton over the counter.
44:44That's it for Rod.
44:45And Larry has it.
44:46Has to get the ball.
44:47They continue to go after the ball.
44:58Larry has it, a very important man in a bout like this.
45:02In our discussion with him before the bout, he said his main consideration was not allowing
45:09this to get into a street brawl and has it very quick to step for trade as they continue
45:14to go at each other after the ball.
45:16Here's some of that action, which is really bar room stuff.
45:20They're going at it.
45:23We're in Scott's corner.
45:24They drowned him with water to begin the corner.
45:26And they must be telling him, forget bouncing around.
45:29It's now street time.
45:30A replay of those cards.
45:31There's that right hand I was talking about.
45:33He threw it again and just missed.
45:35Watch the right hand come in again.
45:38He just missed with it.
45:39Had that landed, it would have been a big factor in this fight.
45:42So we go to round 10.
45:46Final round, no question.
45:48James Scott, according to our scorecard, needs a knockout for victory.
45:54Mike Braxton actually pushed the referee Hazard out of the road.
46:01I think Scott senses that he's got a victory going here.
46:04I cannot imagine why, though.
46:05If his partner's telling him he's ahead, they're making a big mistake.
46:14That's the kind of fight he should have been doing from the fifth round on.
46:16Sharp punches from outside.
46:18Uppercuts, stiff jabs.
46:20That's what he should be doing.
46:29It appears to be all quite Braxton,
46:31but as we have seen, many a strange occurrence
46:35has taken place when it comes to scoring fights.
46:42And under the New Jersey State Athletic Commission,
46:46the referee of the two juggers,
46:48Tali Spina and Frank Brunette,
46:50score the bounce.
46:53Cloud roaring, but neither boxer able to land.
47:01Braxton threatening a bolo punch,
47:03and then finally landing.
47:04Left hand to the chest, landed by Scott.
47:10If I were Scott, I'd go to the corner, and I'd stay there.
47:13That's what he's doing, the best work.
47:15A reminder, scoring is round by round.
47:19If the round is even, they go to the supplementary five-point list.
47:23But James Scott, the way he's seen it,
47:25needs a knockout for victory.
47:27Scott throwing everything he's got in every punch.
47:32He's not holding anything back now.
47:34He knows he's a tough crowd.
47:35He needs this.
47:35Dwight Braxton, hot dog, he can't put his hands down.
47:53Scott did not react fast enough.
47:55That was very dumb on the part of Dwight Braxton.
47:57Under a minute left, and there's Tuffman's final round.
48:06This is a fight Scott should have been fighting for in the fifth round.
48:09Tuffman in command.
48:12He's pulling out the tenth round, but is it too late?
48:14There you see the puck running down.
48:26Less than 20 seconds from the line.
48:28The puck has been running down on James Scott most of his life,
48:31and he's got the tenth round going for him.
48:38And we are now 20 seconds tight.
48:41Tidal round, so we will go into a decision.
48:50Dwight Braxton says, no way has James Scott put his arms up
48:54as it indicated a victory.
48:57We'll be back for the decision right after these words.
49:01Play with poisons if you don't have to.
49:21Marv Albert along with the fight, Dr. Ferdie Pacheco,
49:23back at the Rowey State Prison.
49:25Rowey, New Jersey, we're set for the decision.
49:30Ferdie has it, 5-4-1, in favor of Dwight Braxton.
49:35And let's go to the ring announcer, Frank Shane.
49:41Ladies and gentlemen, here is the voting of the officials.
49:45Referee, Larry Hazard, scores at five rounds Braxton,
49:50four rounds Scott, one round even.
49:57Judge Frank Brunette scores at six rounds Braxton,
50:01three rounds Scott, one round even.
50:05Judge Charlie Spina scores at six rounds Braxton,
50:09three rounds Scott, one round even.
50:11The winner by unanimous decision,
50:14Braxton, Braxton, the unanimous decision.
50:20So, Dwight Braxton by unanimous decision,
50:23Larry Hazard and Ferdie agreeing with the 5-4-1 score.
50:27Ferdie is all set with the winner.
50:29Dwight, were you surprised him bouncing around and running?
50:31Yeah, yeah, yeah, very surprised.
50:33The fight threw me off the first round,
50:34but I know how to work either way.
50:36I just got to finish beating Rossman for running.
50:38Man, you know, he wasn't that much hard, no different.
50:40I just expected different fighters.
50:42He looked like you,
50:42every time you cornered him in a corner,
50:44he fought a lot harder.
50:45Were you worried in the corners?
50:47No, because he's methodical.
50:49He misses too much.
50:50All right, you're ready for Saad Muhammad.
50:53Any of them, you see, I can take a punch,
50:54I can get one.
50:55Here's Murad Muhammad.
50:56He's the promoter that made all this possible.
50:58I want you to hear your challenge.
51:00First of all, I want to thank
51:01Montgomery County Boys Club
51:02for letting me train there.
51:04I want to thank all my fans in Cameron
51:05for a goodness of raising.
51:06All right, you're at him a shot.
51:08He deserves a shot at the title,
51:09and we're going to see that he's good.
51:11I bend his early shot.
51:12All right.
51:12I got to make me run through the old horses.
51:14Give me the pony.
51:16All right, back to Marv.
51:17Good luck.
51:19So, Dwight Braxton,
51:21who certainly did not hurt his chances
51:23at a potential upcoming title shot,
51:26with Matthew Saad Muhammad
51:28perhaps in the wings.
51:30A decision for Braxton over James Scott,
51:34and for Scott,
51:35it is only his second loss as a pro.
51:37He is now 19-2-1,
51:41while Dwight Braxton
51:42with a record now 15-1-1.
51:45A very impressive bout here with James Scott.
51:48James Scott now is alongside Ferdy.
51:50Let's go back to the rim.
51:51All right, James.
51:52You know, I'm surprised to see you run like that
51:54because I've watched you,
51:55and you're always a battler.
51:57What were you running for?
51:58First, let me say all praise due to a long-arm
52:00of Elijah Muhammad.
52:01What can you expect in prison?
52:02You know, I'm the underdog.
52:04Braxton felt like he won, then he won.
52:06He should get a title shot.
52:08Well, you're always a gentleman.
52:09You're always a good loser.
52:11If you only lost once before,
52:12good luck to you, James Scott.
52:16So, Dwight Braxton,
52:18by decision,
52:19over James Scott
