00:00:00I want you people to know at home TV that if you get up and go get a soda, a glass of beer, go to the bathroom, you might miss it.
00:00:06This is going to be one of the most exciting fights that y'all have seen in a long time.
00:00:09And Eddie Gregory won't go past round four.
00:00:11James Scott, the uncrowned light heavyweight champion of the world, said that.
00:00:15Is that convincing?
00:00:30The man you just heard is James Scott, and this is his home, Rawway State Prison, the maximum security prison in Woodbridge, New Jersey.
00:00:43Inside these walls and bars, Scott works out in his own boxing program, but he cannot leave the walls to fight professionally.
00:00:50So for the first time in boxing history, an inmate is fighting a professional fight inside a prison.
00:00:56As HBO Sports presents Boxing Behind Bars, the main event, inmate James Scott versus the number one contender for the light heavyweight crown, Eddie Gregory.
00:01:15Good evening, everyone.
00:01:17My name is Len Berman, working tonight with Don Dunphy, Larry Merchant, and Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:01:21We are all about to witness an event that's never happened before in television sports.
00:01:25A top boxing contender coming inside the walls of a prison to fight an inmate.
00:01:30The inmate, James Scott.
00:01:32Needless to say, this is the biggest night of his life.
00:01:34He is a man who's here because of a parole violation after an armed robbery conviction.
00:01:39He is taking on the top contender for the WBA light heavyweight crown, Eddie Gregory.
00:01:44Gregory taking a big risk by coming inside these prison walls.
00:01:47Now, the fight will take place inside an auditorium, which was the site of bloody riots seven years ago.
00:01:52But tonight, 450 paying customers from the outside world will watch this fight.
00:01:58The inmates, 1,100 strong, are in another portion of this prison.
00:02:01They are watching the fight on three large screens.
00:02:04I will join them there.
00:02:06We'll have a camera to capture their reactions.
00:02:08Why is this fight going on inside a prison?
00:02:10They have a special program here to train inmates to become fighters once they reach the outside.
00:02:15For more on that, here's Larry Merchant.
00:02:16Larry?
00:02:17Larry, James Scott is a very, very unusual man, and so is the boxing program here at Railway.
00:02:24Last week, we came here to take an inside look at both phenomena, a very inside look.
00:02:31Stonewalls do a prison make here, and inside them dwells a community of outcasts.
00:02:36Surprisingly, however, there is as much space devoted to a complex of shops and classrooms as the cells.
00:02:42And an effort of sorts is made to train the inmates in skilled occupations.
00:02:46For some, it's a chance to find a trade.
00:02:48For others, a way to pass the time.
00:02:51I would say a good 60% of the inmate population have never had a real, what would you call, a bona fide job.
00:03:01They've had earned money wherever they can, catch as catch can.
00:03:04But to be a professional, they just could not call themselves that.
00:03:08We have found that once a man feels that he has learned a trade,
00:03:12he's become a mechanic in whatever field or whatever area he wants to,
00:03:16he has a different outlook on life.
00:03:18He has also a lot more respect for himself, and he carries himself that way, and it shows it.
00:03:24This also is occupational training at Railway.
00:03:27For these inmates, this is a job.
00:03:29They're paid for it, as in other programs.
00:03:31They earn points toward parole and days off their sentences.
00:03:34In theory, they'll become professional fighters.
00:03:37It may be the most real job training that we can offer to, I think, a significant percentage of our population,
00:03:47the young, the youngster from the ghetto areas who grows up wanting to be the Willie Mays,
00:03:53the Muhammad Ali, and who has all the ability in the world.
00:03:58There is some talent, there is hope and desire, and sometimes a realization that the chances come too late and too little.
00:04:06I would have had all that on my mind, and I would have had something to, you know, to look forward to, to accomplish.
00:04:11So I wouldn't, I don't think I would have been here.
00:04:15The long-range effect may be questionable, but for those men, there is an immediate benefit in prison discipline.
00:04:21The boxing program is set to channel some of the prison tough guys.
00:04:25Normally get into a fight, well, without, you know, the snap of the fingers,
00:04:29they would think twice now because they need their hands to fight.
00:04:32And they would rather do it with gloves than without gloves.
00:04:35James Scott, the spearhead of Railway's boxing program, is a prison celebrity, a role he's comfortable with.
00:04:42While he seems to inspire as much envy as admiration in other inmates, prison officials feel his effect is beneficial.
00:04:49He's a man to get himself together, and I don't think he did that.
00:04:51I think that it's, you know, just another expression of a, of a person's, uh, desire to do something constructive,
00:04:59constructive while in jail, and I think that's what James Scott is doing.
00:05:05Scott Sell in Railway is here in Three Wing, where, after a reputation as incorrigible,
00:05:11he has been trying to beat his past, to fight his way out of prison again.
00:05:15His first offense at age 13 was truancy.
00:05:18He spent the last 16 out of 18 years in prison.
00:05:21The most he's made out of prison as a boxer was $1,200, when he fought in Miami, Miami Beach for the Dundees.
00:05:29In prison, he makes $3 a day as a paraprofessional.
00:05:33This fight could begin another passage to freedom and a career.
00:05:37A noose, a noose surrounding, I had never been in prison before, and I was forced to do what anybody else had to do, survive.
00:05:51Did you actually learn how to fight in prison?
00:05:54Yes.
00:05:57What circumstances?
00:05:58When?
00:05:59Okay, uh, I got my first pair of gloves when I was 10 years old.
00:06:03I was on the streets, and my uncle gave them to me.
00:06:05My father showed me a little bit about boxing, but he didn't really spend time with me.
00:06:09Okay, and I went to Janesburg, and Janesburg, it's mandatory that you fight, or you learn how to box, because that's the status symbol.
00:06:17So, you know, the prison is a world, too.
00:06:20So you try to get status, so you don't have to box.
00:06:22I went to Annandale.
00:06:23They had boxing gloves in Annandale, and they had matches in Annandale, three-minute rounds.
00:06:27Right, so I bought me boxing in Sanford.
00:06:29When I went to Bordentown, I had my first three amateur, my first five amateur fights.
00:06:33I won three, I lost two.
00:06:36Okay, that was my first experience.
00:06:38And one of the things that thrilled me is I always thought I could be a little bit better than another guy, watching the guys do it.
00:06:43I thought I was a little bit more excited, something that the crowd wanted to see, that slam, bang, toe-to-toe action.
00:06:48Okay, from Bordentown, I went to prison.
00:06:52The guys in prison were so good, I couldn't even put the gloves on until around 66, 67.
00:06:57From 67 to now, I beat everything in the prison houses.
00:07:01You've been in prison since 1960, most of your adolescent and adult life.
00:07:06Why should we believe that if you became champion and could come out of prison, that you can live outside of the prison in society?
00:07:16Well, first of all, you've got to remember that when I was in prison, or when I was locked up, I was young.
00:07:22You know, I had no goals, no values.
00:07:27I spent 15 months in the room building, and my trainer was down there.
00:07:33I spent 15 months down there.
00:07:34That's the worst place I've ever been in my life.
00:07:37And I spent down there, and that gave me a chance to think.
00:07:41I think when a man is forced with thought, you know, under adversity, you're forced to think.
00:07:47That's when you begin to realize, what are you going to do, and what you have to do.
00:07:51And I think it was then that I really decided I've got to get a chance.
00:07:54I've just got to make it, you know.
00:07:56I can't quit now.
00:07:57Nobody's ever went straight to the top.
00:07:59If you ask a college professor, how long did it take you to get here?
00:08:03I quote Dr. Freddy Micheco.
00:08:05One time I was getting ready to give up, and he says,
00:08:07You know, I used to look down a tunnel, and all I could see was the light.
00:08:10I didn't know what was in the tunnel.
00:08:11All I knew was there was a light at the end of the tunnel.
00:08:14I just followed that light.
00:08:15Nobody knows what they've got to go through to get to the top.
00:08:17This is what I wound up going through to get to the top.
00:08:20But what difference does it make as long as you get there?
00:08:22The hardest job in the institution is getting around the stuff in here.
00:08:27You know, you have people that are envious.
00:08:29You have officers that are envious, who, you know,
00:08:32or when I say envious, you know, will do anything they can to stifle your creative abilities
00:08:36or stop you from being successful.
00:08:38I don't think it would be very, very, very hard to train for a championship fight
00:08:42with all the distractions in here.
00:08:44And I said before, you know, you find some guys, for instance,
00:08:47if a game was, a basketball game was scheduled,
00:08:51and boxing was scheduled, there's a toss-up between boxing and basketball,
00:08:55the bag may get destroyed.
00:08:57So the basketball game would go on because there's a conflict interest.
00:09:00You got some guys in here that can play basketball almost as good as Dr. J.
00:09:04They never had a chance to be discovered, you know.
00:09:07And the reason why I say that is because, I mean, let's face it.
00:09:09All right, I got all these books in my room,
00:09:11so by reading and writing, I've learned how to talk.
00:09:13Okay, now, if a person spends five to six to seven hours every day doing something,
00:09:17another guy spends an hour a day doing something,
00:09:20who has a better chance of being the best at it?
00:09:22History is made every day.
00:09:24There's always new incidents arising, you know.
00:09:26This is unique.
00:09:27You know, a couple of years ago, this would have been unthought of.
00:09:30So now, the possibilities of a prisoner getting a chance is according to his ability.
00:09:34I don't think that to look at the fact that he's in prison,
00:09:36maybe it's bad for the public image,
00:09:39but I think that what will shine is that his good deeds outweigh his bad deeds.
00:09:42All you're supposed to see is the title.
00:09:44You know, the guy, hey, the guy has won.
00:09:45He's a good fighter.
00:09:47The only people like Cosell, and maybe you were,
00:09:50well, years ago you were in prison.
00:09:51What course, you know, that's not important.
00:09:53You know, what are we doing now?
00:09:54You know, like, you got a lot of people that have done a lot of things
00:09:57and made a lot of mistakes,
00:09:59and we don't always bring up what you did in the past.
00:10:01You know, this is my first chance at exposure.
00:10:04I don't think I knew what to say back then.
00:10:06I wasn't ready back then, back in 1974.
00:10:09And Gregory, it's just an opportunity to expose to the public
00:10:12that there is somebody lurking behind the shadows,
00:10:15waiting for his opportunity,
00:10:16and he's much better than the current light-headed wager tenant
00:10:20that they have out there.
00:10:22All of them have been beaten.
00:10:23I have been beaten.
00:10:24I think about this all day long, 24 hours a day.
00:10:26I eat, sleep, and drink this.
00:10:28He's got an hour in the gym, girls.
00:10:30He's got to duck all that.
00:10:32All this blister on him at one time.
00:10:35Psychologically, I can't see, you know,
00:10:37I just can't see him being ready.
00:10:39And if he is ready, I'm ready.
00:10:41We're going to fight.
00:10:42And I'm going to knock him out.
00:10:42I want you to hear this here.
00:10:44I'm going to knock him out in less,
00:10:46no more than four, no more than four.
00:10:49These guys actually got to kill me to win.
00:10:50I've talked too much.
00:10:51I've said too much.
00:10:52I've trained too hard.
00:10:54If I didn't beat him, I'd have to retire.
00:10:56It's going to be a fight.
00:10:58If the other guy come in prepared to make it a boxing match,
00:11:02he's mistaken because he's going to be in a war.
00:11:05Here we are with my two colleagues,
00:11:07Don Dunphy, the well-known blow-by-blow announcer,
00:11:09and Sugar Ray Leonard, the well-await contender.
00:11:14Don, you've seen a few million fights in your time.
00:11:17Have you ever heard of a situation like this?
00:11:19Not really, Larry.
00:11:21I haven't.
00:11:21And if you would have asked me,
00:11:23has Scott got much of a chance?
00:11:24I'd say, have to say off the cuff that I don't think so.
00:11:27I just can't conceive of an inmate in a prison
00:11:30defeating the number one light heavyweight contender.
00:11:35However, the important thing here, Larry,
00:11:36is that Scott thinks he can do it,
00:11:39and his mental attitude is very, very good.
00:11:41He is a professional, you know,
00:11:43and it isn't as though he learned to box in prison.
00:11:46He had 12 fights as a pro,
00:11:48didn't lose any of them,
00:11:49and scored seven knockouts.
00:11:50So he thinks he can do it.
00:11:52You think his lack of experience, Sugar Ray,
00:11:55and the fact that he really hasn't been active
00:11:58among top fighters in recent years
00:12:00will count too heavily against him?
00:12:03Well, I look forward to the earlier rounds
00:12:04being a very exciting round for a simple reason.
00:12:08James Scott is a devastating puncher,
00:12:10but as the rounds progress,
00:12:12you will see that Eddie Gregory's,
00:12:13his experience will take its toll.
00:12:15Don, a year ago,
00:12:16Eddie Gregory wasn't in a prison.
00:12:18He was fighting for the light heavyweight championship
00:12:20of the world.
00:12:21Tell us something about that fight.
00:12:22Well, the fight was in Turin, Italy,
00:12:24and Eddie claims he won that fight,
00:12:27and a lot of people who saw it on TV
00:12:28and some who were there agree with him.
00:12:30However, I did not see it, I must admit.
00:12:33But I don't think he got any
00:12:34the better of the officiating.
00:12:36Eddie was hit low in this,
00:12:37at this spot,
00:12:38and the referee completely ignored it.
00:12:40It was a flagrant low blow.
00:12:42Galindez is in the black trunks,
00:12:43and this is for the light heavyweight title,
00:12:45WBA version,
00:12:46and Gregory is giving as well as he can take.
00:12:50Galindez moves in,
00:12:51feints him,
00:12:51digs the left hand of the body,
00:12:52and they tie each other up on the inside,
00:12:54and now there was a low blow,
00:12:56actually a tap.
00:12:57It was inconsequential by Gregory,
00:13:00and he was penalized for it.
00:13:01And then,
00:13:02as we saw the scoring later,
00:13:04that one point that he lost on that foul
00:13:06probably cost him the championship.
00:13:08We're in the 14th round now.
00:13:10Galindez,
00:13:11crown is chattering,
00:13:12but he may be slightly ahead
00:13:13as Gregory forces him into the ropes.
00:13:15Gregory in the red trunks,
00:13:17digs that left hand of the body again,
00:13:18ties up Galindez on the inside.
00:13:21Gregory at this point
00:13:21seems in charge of the fight,
00:13:23but Galindez
00:13:24is a very, very tough hombre.
00:13:25Gregory about 15 seconds left,
00:13:27and there's the final bell,
00:13:29and the winner is Victor Galindez
00:13:31defending the light heavyweight championship
00:13:33against Eddie Gregory.
00:13:36Eddie,
00:13:36we've just been watching a clip
00:13:37of your title fight.
00:13:39It's a far cry
00:13:40from fighting for the championship
00:13:41to coming inside of a prison.
00:13:42What are your thoughts
00:13:43on the moments
00:13:44before your big fight here?
00:13:46Well,
00:13:46this is like a homecoming to me
00:13:47because everybody knows
00:13:48I did a little time myself,
00:13:49and surely no problem.
00:13:51It's just going to be me and James Scott.
00:13:52I'm not fighting the whole prison system.
00:13:54I'm just fighting James Scott,
00:13:55that's all.
00:13:56What kind of time did you do?
00:13:57For what?
00:13:57Like, small things.
00:13:58Burglary, harassment.
00:14:00I beat up four cops.
00:14:02Small stuff like that.
00:14:03So you know what James Scott is thinking.
00:14:05How are you going to deal with that?
00:14:07Hey, this is going to be
00:14:07a technology fight.
00:14:08I'm going to be
00:14:09the technician tonight.
00:14:10You know,
00:14:11I'm just going to
00:14:11utilize all my tools.
00:14:14But isn't this a big risk for you?
00:14:15I mean,
00:14:16you have everything to lose here
00:14:17and not a whole lot to gain.
00:14:18Well,
00:14:19if you're going to be a fighter,
00:14:19you're going to be a fighter.
00:14:20I'm a fighter.
00:14:21I don't duck anyone.
00:14:23I consider myself a champion.
00:14:25I duck no one.
00:14:26If it means I have to come to prison
00:14:28and the knockdowns out,
00:14:29I'll be here.
00:14:30What's your prediction tonight?
00:14:32Well,
00:14:32I'm not going to predict,
00:14:33but this is going to be
00:14:33a technician-like job.
00:14:34I can't predict
00:14:35that I'm going to win the fight.
00:14:36Eddie,
00:14:37good luck to you.
00:14:37Thank you very much.
00:14:38All right,
00:14:38let's go back to Larry Merchant
00:14:39in the ringside.
00:14:49There's Eddie Gregory now,
00:14:51the first one into the ring.
00:14:57This room is like
00:14:58a little steam bath.
00:15:00It's crowded with about
00:15:01400 or 500 people.
00:15:03I think he feels
00:15:04any differently
00:15:04than walking to any other
00:15:06small fight club,
00:15:07having come behind
00:15:09these walls.
00:15:10A lot of beer here
00:15:11gives me cause
00:15:12the phobia from the start.
00:15:15All right,
00:15:16let's go upstairs
00:15:17to Len Berman
00:15:18and see what the other
00:15:19inmates here
00:15:19at Railway State Prison
00:15:21are up to
00:15:22and what their thoughts are
00:15:23as we head into this fight.
00:15:26Larry,
00:15:27it's quite a bit cooler
00:15:28up here in the drill hall.
00:15:30Three large screens
00:15:31are against the wall
00:15:33and the windows here.
00:15:34Hundreds of inmates
00:15:34are crowded in.
00:15:35I've got to tell you,
00:15:36highly partisan
00:15:37pro-James Scott.
00:15:39They definitely feel
00:15:40their man's going to win it,
00:15:41right?
00:15:41That's going to win.
00:15:42James Scott all the way.
00:15:44Let's go downstairs,
00:15:45James Scott.
00:15:45You know,
00:15:46we learned earlier
00:15:48that even though
00:15:49those inmates
00:15:51favor James Scott,
00:15:53that here at prison,
00:15:54the betting line
00:15:56is three cartons
00:15:57of cigarettes
00:15:58to one
00:15:58in favor of Gregory.
00:16:01There's no sentiment
00:16:02when it comes to betting.
00:16:04That's true, man.
00:16:07I guess they've seen
00:16:08quite a bit of Eddie
00:16:09on TV
00:16:11and I guess they feel
00:16:12that he's the winner.
00:16:14You know,
00:16:14you'd have to say
00:16:15that most of these inmates
00:16:16have seen Gregory fight
00:16:18more than they have Scott,
00:16:19actually.
00:16:20When we were here,
00:16:22we saw that
00:16:23almost every inmate
00:16:25had a television set
00:16:27in his cell.
00:16:28So, in a sense,
00:16:30Gregory may be
00:16:30more familiar to them
00:16:31than their own,
00:16:33the member
00:16:33of their own community.
00:16:34I think they remember
00:16:35that Victor Galanda's fight.
00:16:40And there's James Scott.
00:16:42He looks like a human
00:16:50skull and bones
00:16:51in that black and white.
00:16:53It looks very awesome.
00:16:56Pretty cool, too.
00:16:57This contest,
00:17:0412 rounds,
00:17:05the main bow.
00:17:06In the blue corner,
00:17:08he's wearing white trunks
00:17:09with black stripes.
00:17:12He's from Newark, New Jersey.
00:17:14He weighed in at 176 pounds.
00:17:18Let's have a nice hand
00:17:19for the challenger,
00:17:20James Scott.
00:17:21Scott.
00:17:22And in the white corner,
00:17:32he's wearing red trunks
00:17:33with a white stripe
00:17:35weighing at 177 and three-quarter pounds.
00:17:40He's from the Brownsville section
00:17:42of Brooklyn,
00:17:43the number one
00:17:44World Boxing Association
00:17:46white heavyweight contender,
00:17:49Eddie The Flame,
00:17:51Gregory.
00:17:5212 rounds.
00:17:57The referee,
00:17:58Tony Perez,
00:17:59counting for the knockdowns
00:18:00at the bell,
00:18:01Larry Hazard.
00:18:03Tony Perez,
00:18:05the referee,
00:18:05has the instructions.
00:18:09They're trying to psych each other.
00:18:11They're really trying
00:18:13to psych each other.
00:18:13coming up to round one.
00:18:25It's scheduled for 12 rounds
00:18:26or less.
00:18:28Eddie Gregory
00:18:29in the red trunks.
00:18:3028 wins,
00:18:31three losses,
00:18:32and a draw
00:18:33with 21 knockouts.
00:18:35He's never been stopped.
00:18:38James Scott.
00:18:4012 wins,
00:18:41no losses,
00:18:42one draw,
00:18:43seven knockouts.
00:18:46Scott looking a little bit
00:18:48like Hurricane Carter,
00:18:49Reuben Hurricane Carter.
00:18:50a shaved head.
00:18:53Who, of course,
00:18:53once was incarcerated
00:18:54here at Raleigh
00:18:55and did some boxing here.
00:19:01It's a question
00:19:02in my mind
00:19:03about condition.
00:19:05We know that
00:19:06Scott had a good record.
00:19:07He started out
00:19:08as a professional fighter
00:19:09before he ran
00:19:11into difficulties
00:19:12that caused him
00:19:13to be incarcerated here
00:19:14and all his 12 fights
00:19:16were before
00:19:17his stay here
00:19:19at Raleigh.
00:19:21So he didn't learn
00:19:22to box in prison.
00:19:23He learned it the hard way
00:19:24in the pro ranks.
00:19:26Not that learning
00:19:26in prison is very easy.
00:19:28Not too much
00:19:29happening so far.
00:19:34Gregory,
00:19:35a ring-wise veteran
00:19:36who can hurt
00:19:37and when he gets
00:19:38a man in trouble
00:19:39can be very devastating
00:19:40with his punches.
00:19:43He came very close
00:19:45to taking the light
00:19:46heavyweight title
00:19:47from Victor Galindez
00:19:48less than a year ago.
00:19:50Galindez since losing it
00:19:51to Mike Rossman
00:19:53whom Gregory would like
00:19:55to fight for the title.
00:19:57So would Yaki Lopez
00:19:58like to fight him.
00:19:59Lopez having knocked out
00:20:00Rossman at the Garden.
00:20:02The round is half over.
00:20:07I haven't seen too much
00:20:10of the style
00:20:11of James Scott yet.
00:20:13I'm seeing James
00:20:14for the first time.
00:20:18Gregory moving
00:20:19behind the jab
00:20:20calling on his
00:20:22vast-a-ring experience.
00:20:24Actually, Tony Perez.
00:20:30Scott has not been able
00:20:31to fathom Gregory as yet
00:20:33and Gregory is
00:20:35biding his time
00:20:35coming in behind
00:20:36that jab.
00:20:37A good left hook
00:20:38to the body by Scott.
00:20:42A minute to go
00:20:43on the round.
00:20:45It's a countdown
00:20:46on the screen.
00:20:52Gregory knows his way
00:20:54around in there.
00:20:54He's been in
00:20:55at the best.
00:20:59Gregory is boxing
00:21:00beautifully at the moment.
00:21:03Scott hasn't got
00:21:04his timing yet.
00:21:09Fine boxing
00:21:10is sufficient
00:21:10by Eddie Gregory
00:21:11from Philadelphia
00:21:12and the crowd
00:21:14applauds him for it.
00:21:17Time running out
00:21:18in the round.
00:21:25Only a few seconds
00:21:26left in this round.
00:21:37There's the bell.
00:21:43Larry,
00:21:44we didn't learn
00:21:45too much
00:21:46out of that round.
00:21:47At least I didn't.
00:21:49I think Scott
00:21:50is trying to maintain
00:21:51some discipline,
00:21:52not be too wild,
00:21:53trying to size up
00:21:55his man.
00:21:55What do you think,
00:21:56Sheridan?
00:21:56I learned something.
00:21:57I see that the crowd
00:21:58was telling the truth
00:21:58that James Scott
00:22:00can really hit.
00:22:01A couple times
00:22:02he hurt Eddie
00:22:02with those
00:22:04stiff right hands.
00:22:06He's got a reputation
00:22:07as a murderous
00:22:08body puncher, Scott.
00:22:10That's true,
00:22:11but as the fight
00:22:12go on,
00:22:13you will see
00:22:14the experience
00:22:14of Eddie Gregory
00:22:15come out
00:22:15because what's
00:22:16Eddie trying to do?
00:22:17He's trying to make
00:22:17Scott miss
00:22:18and then he's going
00:22:19to take advantage
00:22:20of the opportunity
00:22:20when Scott
00:22:21begins to tire.
00:22:25And he said
00:22:29that when Scott
00:22:30was fighting
00:22:30professionally
00:22:31out of Miami
00:22:33that he had
00:22:34a reputation
00:22:34that he didn't
00:22:35want to fight him.
00:22:37Round two.
00:22:40Round two,
00:22:41Eddie Gregory
00:22:41in the red trunks
00:22:42in Philadelphia
00:22:43from Raleigh State
00:22:44Prison
00:22:45in the white trunks,
00:22:46James Scott.
00:22:49Scott has long arms.
00:22:51He's probably got
00:22:52the reach on Gregory
00:22:53a little bit.
00:22:53They're about the same height.
00:22:56Scott has been
00:22:57very wild so far.
00:22:58Gregory has boxed
00:22:59beautifully.
00:23:02Tying up Scott
00:23:03on the inside again.
00:23:05Tony Perez
00:23:05over to get them apart.
00:23:07Scoring on a round's
00:23:08basis.
00:23:10Good right by Gregory
00:23:11with a supplementary
00:23:12point system
00:23:13if the rounds
00:23:13come out even
00:23:14on a card.
00:23:16There is a mandatory
00:23:16eight count.
00:23:18However,
00:23:18there is no
00:23:19three knockdown rule
00:23:20and a man cannot
00:23:21be saved
00:23:22by the bell.
00:23:23He's knocked down
00:23:24near the ringing
00:23:25of the bell.
00:23:26He must get up
00:23:26before the count
00:23:27of ten
00:23:27even though
00:23:28the bell sounds
00:23:29or he will be
00:23:30counted out
00:23:30except in the last round.
00:23:34Two minutes left
00:23:35in round two.
00:23:36I would say, Don,
00:23:45the chip holders fight.
00:23:46I doubt to go
00:23:47the distance
00:23:47because both guys
00:23:49are really pouring
00:23:50those punches in there.
00:23:50They really throw
00:23:51a lot of fighting shots
00:23:52and a lot of stiff
00:23:53left and right hands.
00:23:56I don't know
00:23:56if I agree with you
00:23:58there, Sugar Ray,
00:23:59because I've seen Gregory
00:24:00and sometimes
00:24:01when he thinks
00:24:02he's running a fight
00:24:02he gets a little bit lazy
00:24:03and really doesn't
00:24:05try to knock out
00:24:06the opponent.
00:24:07He seems content
00:24:07to win
00:24:08just on points.
00:24:11But so both guys
00:24:11really winging
00:24:12those punches in there.
00:24:13Now Scott is hitting
00:24:15harder and he's
00:24:15finding Gregory.
00:24:18He's going to make
00:24:19Gregory open up.
00:24:21Gregory will find out
00:24:22that he just cannot
00:24:23coast along.
00:24:24He'll have to fight
00:24:25when he's not fought
00:24:27so far.
00:24:29Scott has been
00:24:30pressing the action
00:24:31even though he's
00:24:32been wild at times.
00:24:33A minute to go
00:24:35in the round.
00:24:36Round two.
00:24:37All the good, all the good,
00:24:38all the good.
00:24:41All the good.
00:24:43All the good.
00:24:45Good punches by Scott.
00:24:49He's got an edge
00:24:50in this round, Scott has.
00:24:52All the good, all the good.
00:24:53All the good.
00:24:59Gregory still boxing well
00:25:00with that bobbing
00:25:01and weaving
00:25:01and rolling
00:25:02and riding.
00:25:02But he's not hitting.
00:25:05He's doing all of that
00:25:06but he isn't hitting
00:25:07very much.
00:25:08Half a minute to go
00:25:09in the round.
00:25:13I think Gregory's
00:25:14waiting for Scott to
00:25:16turn because he's
00:25:17not doing that many
00:25:18shots.
00:25:19That's why that made a
00:25:19punch.
00:25:20That was a good shot
00:25:22by Scott.
00:25:24That'll make Eddie
00:25:25think a little bit.
00:25:29Seconds to go in the round.
00:25:30Good round for Scott.
00:25:40There's the bell ending
00:25:41round two.
00:25:43Crowd like that one.
00:25:49Well, up here in the drill
00:25:50hall, they've come to life
00:25:52as that was definitely
00:25:53James Scott's round,
00:25:54taking it to Eddie Gregory.
00:25:55And the crowds really
00:25:57come to life up here.
00:25:58How do you think
00:25:58your guys doing?
00:26:00Scott is doing good.
00:26:01He's going to win.
00:26:02He's going to win.
00:26:02Definitely.
00:26:03How do you think
00:26:03he's doing?
00:26:03All the way.
00:26:05Here's some of the action.
00:26:06Let's go back to ringside.
00:26:07Well, here you see where
00:26:11Scott is doing much
00:26:13of the damage.
00:26:13He's throwing uppercuts
00:26:15and he's really
00:26:16connecting well.
00:26:19Off of what you've seen
00:26:20in this brief time,
00:26:22is this man a world-class
00:26:23fighter?
00:26:24He's game.
00:26:25He has the punching
00:26:26ability to be a world-class
00:26:28fighter.
00:26:28There's no question about
00:26:29that.
00:26:29You're a little skeptical.
00:26:30You want to wait to see
00:26:31what happens over the next
00:26:32seven, eight rounds.
00:26:34In the later rounds.
00:26:35I'm curious.
00:26:35Very curious.
00:26:36There we are in round three.
00:26:43Round three.
00:26:45Round two took a surprising
00:26:46turn with Scott dominating
00:26:49the action and scoring
00:26:50with heavy shots on Eddie
00:26:51Gregory.
00:26:52Scott in the white trunks
00:26:53showing a jab now.
00:26:55Gregory in the red trunks.
00:26:59Offensively, Gregory has
00:27:00done very little.
00:27:03He must have hurt me
00:27:04because he opened up with
00:27:05smart shots on the jaw.
00:27:09They were not putting
00:27:10puff punches.
00:27:14Gregory trying to get cute.
00:27:17Now scoring with his jab.
00:27:23You know, Don, we talked
00:27:24about Eddie getting relaxed
00:27:25once in a while.
00:27:26But I think the way
00:27:27that Scott's a plan of
00:27:29pressure, Eddie doesn't
00:27:30have time to relax.
00:27:31He has to constantly
00:27:32punch and move.
00:27:33I would agree with him.
00:27:34But I wonder if he knows
00:27:35that.
00:27:40Scott pressing the attack
00:27:41again, but he's a little
00:27:42bit wild with two minutes
00:27:43to go on the round.
00:27:44And Scott's gone in the yelling,
00:27:51take your time.
00:27:52He is raking the body
00:27:53with good ones now.
00:27:55Good body punches.
00:27:57Scott is a hard hitter.
00:27:58He fights out of a modified
00:28:00peekaboo style, doesn't he,
00:28:01Don?
00:28:01I think he does, yes.
00:28:04Reminiscent of Floyd Patterson.
00:28:05Although he doesn't lunge in
00:28:09like a kangaroo.
00:28:17Tony Perez, the referee.
00:28:20Maybe on referee working
00:28:22in Jersey.
00:28:23A second minute.
00:28:26Gregory claiming a low punch.
00:28:29The referee agrees with him.
00:28:30Scott is told to keep his
00:28:31punches up.
00:28:35Again, the referee is
00:28:40trying to kick those punches
00:28:42up.
00:28:43That was a low blow.
00:28:45I don't think it was a
00:28:46toucher.
00:28:51They were not low.
00:29:03Gregory is actually a
00:29:04knockout puncher.
00:29:05He's stood 21 of his 30 fights
00:29:08and ended in a knockout.
00:29:10He hasn't shown any firepower
00:29:12tonight.
00:29:20Scott has dominated the
00:29:21offensive action all the way.
00:29:26And if he doesn't lose this
00:29:27round on a low blow,
00:29:29that's up to the referee.
00:29:30Scott will win this round, too.
00:29:32Gregory Peppert in that time.
00:29:37Round almost over.
00:29:41There's the bell.
00:29:45Now the referee,
00:29:46the referee is not taking the
00:29:48round away from Scott.
00:29:50No, I think Scott probably won the
00:29:51round.
00:29:55I point out here that in order to
00:29:57get this fight, Scott had to give
00:29:59the lion's share of the purse to
00:30:01Gregory.
00:30:02Gregory is getting $15,000 for this
00:30:04fight, and Scott is getting $2,500.
00:30:07The man you see there is Mike
00:30:09Rossman's father, the father of the
00:30:11new WBA light heavyweight champion.
00:30:14The light heavyweight champion
00:30:16himself, who is from New Jersey, is
00:30:18not here.
00:30:19Perhaps he's scouting a future
00:30:21opponent, the father.
00:30:22This seems to be the center of light
00:30:27heavyweight activity
00:30:28between Philadelphia and New York.
00:30:31Don, Richie Cates from New Jersey,
00:30:33a top contender.
00:30:40Ready for round four.
00:30:45Gregory in the red trunk.
00:30:47Scott in the white.
00:30:49Gregory is throwing harder punches
00:30:51now.
00:30:53Scott's been throwing them hard all
00:30:55along.
00:30:55Some have landed, some haven't.
00:31:00Scott's going to look to the body
00:31:01now.
00:31:02I'm pretty sure they had instructions
00:31:03from the corner to look to the
00:31:04batter.
00:31:07They're on them all over, right?
00:31:09They're very devastating, too.
00:31:11And that's really his best chance
00:31:13against an experienced fighter not
00:31:15to give him a chance to use his
00:31:16experience just to swarm all over.
00:31:19And now, and now.
00:31:21Off what I've seen so far, I have to
00:31:28wonder if Gregory took this fight
00:31:30seriously.
00:31:39Every so often, Gregory will
00:31:41shoot in a potent shot.
00:31:43He had a lot behind it, but he's not
00:31:44done a two-off.
00:31:58Scott is putting on a fine performance.
00:32:00I tell you, it seems like Scott's
00:32:09charges are trying to surprise everybody.
00:32:11It's a terrific wealth.
00:32:13It's a great big wealth under Gregory's right eye.
00:32:17And whatever he thought when he came here,
00:32:19he knows he's in a fight now.
00:32:21Well, Gregory's taking a lot of short-eye hands.
00:32:23Gregory has it scrolling under the left eye.
00:32:25I haven't seen the right eye, but the left eye is
00:32:30puffing underneath.
00:32:35He's going to have a terrific mouse
00:32:37under that eye very soon.
00:32:39He might not even be able to see out of that left eye
00:32:41in another round or so.
00:32:43Gregory has a very bad left eye.
00:32:47And Scott keeps the pressure on him.
00:32:48God is giving Gregory no respite.
00:33:04Gregory is no longer smiling.
00:33:07He has run into a buzzsaw.
00:33:10I noticed Chippo, the crowd,
00:33:11picked up and fight himself.
00:33:14Half a minute to go in the round.
00:33:16It has been a big round for James Scott
00:33:29at the Rollway State Prison in the White Trunks.
00:33:32Seconds to go in the round.
00:33:44There's the bell.
00:33:46That was a very big round for Scott.
00:33:53I tell you, if Scott can continue that pace,
00:33:56Eddie has his hands full.
00:33:59You know, Eddie may be playing it cool
00:34:01for the later rounds,
00:34:02but if he takes punishment like this
00:34:03for a few more rounds,
00:34:04he's not going to be too fresh later on himself.
00:34:07That's true.
00:34:07I don't think that Eddie's trying to lay back now.
00:34:10I really think that Scott has pretty surprised
00:34:12not only the crowd,
00:34:13but he surprised Eddie also.
00:34:15It sounds like he surprised you a little as well.
00:34:18Oh, yes, my eyes are wild.
00:34:21That's a picture of that left eye
00:34:22that he does not look good.
00:34:26That's the administration.
00:34:28There's James Scott's corner.
00:34:32The little man you see there
00:34:34is named Deke Taylor.
00:34:36He has a little boxing club
00:34:37not far from the prison,
00:34:39and he is Scott's trainer.
00:34:45Up here in the drill for all the inmates
00:34:46who are on their feet.
00:34:48The bell for round four.
00:34:50Round five.
00:34:51Sorry.
00:34:51Round five.
00:34:54Eddie Gregory has been taking a lathering.
00:34:58He's in the red trunks,
00:34:59and James Scott
00:35:00from the Rawway State Prison
00:35:02is on the verge
00:35:03of scoring a tremendous upset.
00:35:06Gregory's the number one
00:35:07light heavyweight contender
00:35:09for Mike Rossman's title,
00:35:10and he could blow it all here
00:35:12as Scott gives him no rest.
00:35:16Gregory is working the body now
00:35:26trying to slow up Scott
00:35:28or slow him down, as you will.
00:35:36There is a possibility
00:35:37that Scott could punch himself out.
00:35:40He has missed a lot of punches.
00:35:42Sugar Ray, the missed punches
00:35:44take more out of you, don't they?
00:35:45Yes, especially when you miss.
00:35:47But the way this fight is going,
00:35:48this is what you call a good fight.
00:35:50The crowd is into it,
00:35:51and the fighters are really
00:35:51putting on a good show.
00:35:54I'll tell you,
00:35:55there are not too many
00:35:56light heavyweights around.
00:35:57I'll give you the action
00:35:58that James Scott
00:35:58has given us right now.
00:36:00I agree.
00:36:01If he can fight like this
00:36:03for the rest of this fight,
00:36:04there are some promoters
00:36:05who are going to be after him.
00:36:07He's hurting Gregory again.
00:36:11Those are two hard right hands.
00:36:13Gregory's left eye
00:36:15is almost closed.
00:36:18It's going to be a one-eyed fredder
00:36:20for a while tonight
00:36:21as long as it goes.
00:36:28And that's bad
00:36:29because they'll have trouble
00:36:31seeing Scott's right hand
00:36:33coming at him.
00:36:34Gregory trying to pop-thrux Scott now
00:36:46and doing it well.
00:36:48A minute to go in the round.
00:36:49Gregory probably hoping
00:37:02that Scott will get very tired.
00:37:06Gregory himself must be tired by now.
00:37:13The pace slows down.
00:37:16Maybe Gregory is getting tired.
00:37:18I mean by Scott.
00:37:24He's still throwing heavy leather.
00:37:37Seconds to go in round five.
00:37:38Another good round for Scott
00:37:40who again is told
00:37:41to keep his punches up.
00:37:42There's the bell ending round five.
00:37:54Up in the drill hole
00:37:56they are delirious
00:37:57as the inmates watch
00:37:58on three large screens.
00:38:00They were delirious
00:38:01after round four.
00:38:02Even more delirious
00:38:03when they saw the close-up
00:38:05of Eddie Gregory's eye.
00:38:06The ring up here
00:38:09is where the inmates
00:38:10work out
00:38:11in the drill hole.
00:38:12They've got basketball courts.
00:38:13They've got weights.
00:38:14They've got a pool table.
00:38:16This is the
00:38:17indoor recreational facility
00:38:18and right now
00:38:19they think their man's
00:38:20going all the way to the top.
00:38:21Here's the replay.
00:38:22This is a slow-mo here
00:38:30and it shows that
00:38:32Scott is over Gregory
00:38:35all the way
00:38:36even though he misses
00:38:37occasionally.
00:38:38Looks like they
00:38:39unleashed it.
00:38:39He doesn't let Gregory
00:38:40get started.
00:38:41It looks like they
00:38:42unleashed a tiger
00:38:43from his cage
00:38:45when they put this man
00:38:46in here in this ring.
00:38:48Well I've got Scott
00:38:49way ahead
00:38:50as we come up
00:38:50for round six.
00:38:57You know
00:38:58a fight like this
00:38:58Don
00:38:58prove this
00:38:59you should never
00:39:00underestimate a fighter.
00:39:01You know
00:39:02I don't care
00:39:02whether he's
00:39:03number one
00:39:04or number 20
00:39:05you should never
00:39:05underestimate him.
00:39:06No sir
00:39:06I agree with you.
00:39:08Especially if you're
00:39:09fighting him.
00:39:12Drop jab by Scott.
00:39:17Gregory has not been
00:39:18able to do too much
00:39:19of an offensive nature.
00:39:21In the early rounds
00:39:22he boxed beautifully
00:39:23but he's not even
00:39:23doing that now.
00:39:25He must know
00:39:26he's behind.
00:39:27He's starting to
00:39:28slug with Scott.
00:39:30Something's got to give.
00:39:32I think what's
00:39:32upsetting Gregory
00:39:33is the fact that
00:39:34Scott
00:39:35he has power
00:39:36both hands
00:39:37and has a very
00:39:37unorthodox style
00:39:38and the fact that
00:39:40his bat is in
00:39:41great condition.
00:39:43Scott is undefeated
00:39:44as a professional.
00:39:45He's won 12
00:39:46and lost none
00:39:46with a draw
00:39:47and seven knockouts.
00:39:50They're over in
00:39:50Gregory's corner.
00:39:51You know what's your way?
00:39:52Stay away!
00:39:53Stay away!
00:39:54Stay away!
00:39:59Two minutes left
00:40:00in this round.
00:40:03This is an amazing
00:40:04story unfolding here.
00:40:07James Scott
00:40:0731 years old
00:40:09been imprisoned
00:40:11in 16 of the last
00:40:1218 years
00:40:13and here he is
00:40:15so far
00:40:16leading the man
00:40:17who is the number
00:40:17one contender
00:40:18for the World
00:40:19Light Heavyweight
00:40:20Championship.
00:40:25You know now
00:40:26this is what you call
00:40:26Fight for Survival.
00:40:29Scott knows
00:40:30if he defeats
00:40:31Eddie
00:40:31he has a good chance
00:40:33of becoming
00:40:33the might-head
00:40:34weight champion
00:40:34in the world.
00:40:35Gregory coming
00:40:40back a little bit
00:40:41here.
00:40:46Push your way
00:40:47out of that.
00:40:47Push your way
00:40:48out of that.
00:40:49Push your way
00:40:50out.
00:40:51They do.
00:40:59Boys trying
00:41:00to get the best
00:41:01grip on this one.
00:41:02Gregory's got it
00:41:08to cut the right
00:41:09hand.
00:41:11Gregory's boxing
00:41:12well again.
00:41:14Keeping Scott
00:41:15off balance.
00:41:19There seems to be a
00:41:20squirt on Eddie's
00:41:21nose also.
00:41:23Half a minute
00:41:23to go in the round.
00:41:26Gregory's been
00:41:26throwing meat
00:41:27grinder it looks.
00:41:28They're just above
00:41:31our HBO microphones
00:41:33and cameras.
00:41:43It's round six
00:41:44of a 12-rounder
00:41:45the halfway mark.
00:41:50There's the bell.
00:41:56Well, Larry,
00:41:56I thought Gregory
00:41:58won that round.
00:41:59I did too.
00:42:00We're only halfway
00:42:01through the fight
00:42:02if it goes the distance
00:42:03and maybe James
00:42:05thought it's tired.
00:42:07He threw an awful
00:42:07lot of punches there
00:42:08in the third,
00:42:09fourth,
00:42:09and fifth rounds.
00:42:10He's getting advice
00:42:23in stereophronic sound,
00:42:36both ears,
00:42:37three different people.
00:42:39He's the man
00:42:41who has to do
00:42:41the fighting.
00:42:43All he is is one.
00:42:47Boy, that Dick Taylor,
00:42:48he really gets mad,
00:42:49doesn't he?
00:42:50I think you know
00:42:50what they mean.
00:42:52Round seven.
00:42:54The fight is half over
00:42:55if it goes the distance.
00:43:00We'll get an idea
00:43:01of Scott's condition
00:43:02in this round.
00:43:03Maybe Gregory's too.
00:43:05The young men are doing
00:43:11more holding now.
00:43:12You know,
00:43:21don't express wise,
00:43:22this should be a turn point.
00:43:25Because Eddie,
00:43:26the last round
00:43:28might be the turning point.
00:43:29but I thought I detected
00:43:31that Gregory was coming back
00:43:33in the last round.
00:43:34We'll see if he can continue it.
00:43:37Scott is well ahead
00:43:38on my card.
00:43:40Four rounds to two.
00:43:41But the fight
00:43:42is only half over.
00:43:44Gregory has a mouse
00:43:45and a lot of swelling
00:43:47below his left eye.
00:43:49He's been chopped up
00:43:50pretty well.
00:43:51Two minutes to go
00:43:52in the round.
00:43:53Scott is lunging in.
00:43:55He may be tired.
00:43:56He's lunging and grabbing.
00:43:59Scott is holding a lot now.
00:44:04Perez at a time
00:44:05getting him apart there.
00:44:11Now it's Gregory
00:44:12doing the holding.
00:44:15And a real lock on him.
00:44:18I would say both players
00:44:19are tired.
00:44:20but I believe Greg
00:44:21is really kind of
00:44:22trying to open it.
00:44:29That's above us again.
00:44:35Gregory has not been able
00:44:36to mount a serious attack,
00:44:39a continued attack
00:44:40at any time.
00:44:42He's been a spot hitter
00:44:43hitting occasionally.
00:44:46Never threw more
00:44:47than two at a time.
00:44:48while Scott kept up
00:44:50a continuous divide.
00:44:54With counterpunting
00:44:55by Gregory.
00:45:10Gregory boxing well again.
00:45:14Trying the body.
00:45:16Kind of slow up Scott.
00:45:17second to go in the round.
00:45:39Second to go in the round.
00:45:43There's the bell ending round seven.
00:46:06Join HBO Sports as we present an
00:46:08exclusive boxing special Sugar Ray
00:46:11Leonard versus Bernie Prado in a
00:46:13ten round welterweight bout.
00:46:15Sugar Ray our friend here remains one of
00:46:17the most charismatic of all of the new
00:46:19crop of fighters combining ring
00:46:21skills with personality charm and
00:46:23intelligence.
00:46:25Leonard remains undefeated and moves
00:46:27closer to the inevitable spot at the
00:46:29welterweight crown.
00:46:31This exclusive HBO Sports boxing
00:46:33special will be televised live from
00:46:35Portland Maine.
00:46:37That's Friday night November 3rd on
00:46:39HBO Sports.
00:46:41Ray what do you know about Bernie
00:46:43Prado.
00:46:45Hey there's the warden.
00:46:47Sorry to interrupt but that's the
00:46:48warden.
00:46:49That's the warden of the prison.
00:46:51Looks a little worried right now
00:46:52Robert Hattrack.
00:46:53Earlier he was cheering when Scott
00:46:55was having his good rounds.
00:46:59That's round eight.
00:47:01Gregory using the jab now.
00:47:03Gregory has apparently been told by
00:47:05his corner to get moving or else.
00:47:11The prison authorities here think
00:47:13that a Scott Wynn will help to boost
00:47:15their program and get them some
00:47:17funds perhaps.
00:47:18They're a good idea.
00:47:20Even if he doesn't win.
00:47:22If he loses it it's going to be a
00:47:24close fight.
00:47:25He's given more than a good account
00:47:27of himself.
00:47:28Gregory knows.
00:47:29Especially from that time.
00:47:33He's fighting one of the top light
00:47:37heavyweights in the world.
00:47:38He's giving Gregory no rest.
00:47:43He's not scoring all the time but he
00:47:48won't let Gregory get started.
00:47:52You know Scott is constantly he's
00:47:53consistent.
00:47:54He's constantly going punches.
00:47:56And he's a player of pressure all
00:47:57the time.
00:47:58Then the aggressor.
00:48:03Two minutes left in the round.
00:48:05Round eight of a 12 rounder.
00:48:13Gregory scoring on the inside.
00:48:25So is Scott.
00:48:30Round half over.
00:48:43It's really hard to score when you
00:48:47get in close that way.
00:48:48You wonder where Gregory wants to
00:48:50stay on top of him.
00:48:51Scott appears to be stronger.
00:48:53He's a wicked body puncher.
00:48:55I agree with you.
00:48:56Scott has very long arms but he
00:48:59still can really apply pressure
00:49:01and throw some I guess devastating
00:49:03body shot.
00:49:06Time running down in the round.
00:49:07You can see the time clock and the
00:49:10right hand lower right hand
00:49:12corner of your screen.
00:49:15Gregory has not been able to move
00:49:17in this round.
00:49:27Half a minute left.
00:49:29Gregory won by the referee.
00:49:33Looks like Scott has gotten some
00:49:35oxygen this round.
00:49:37He seems to be taking over again.
00:49:40I guess he's just determined.
00:49:41All right.
00:49:42Really.
00:49:43I guess he wants to win this
00:49:44fight.
00:49:45Seconds to go.
00:49:47Another good round for Scott.
00:49:52Well they are still cheering upstairs
00:50:05in the drill hole.
00:50:06They think their man James Scott is
00:50:08firmly ahead.
00:50:09The only bit of booing we heard
00:50:10tonight was before the eighth round
00:50:11when they showed a shot of word and
00:50:13hate track.
00:50:14Of course they boo.
00:50:15But right now they're enthusiastic.
00:50:17After eight rounds they say their man is
00:50:19winning.
00:50:20You've been a friend of James Scott for a long time.
00:50:22Seven years.
00:50:23Seven years.
00:50:24Seven years.
00:50:25How do you think he's doing?
00:50:26He's doing good.
00:50:27He's following his philosophy.
00:50:28A winner never quits and a winner never quits.
00:50:31Whatever it is he's doing it very well.
00:50:33A winner never wins and a winner never quits.
00:50:35Okay.
00:50:36Words to live by.
00:50:37Let's go back to rig side.
00:50:38All right.
00:50:39Len.
00:50:40The winner never wins and a winner never wins.
00:50:41We're waiting for the ninth round to come up.
00:50:44Unofficially I have got ahead.
00:50:48Look at the Vaseline all over the place of Eddie Gregory.
00:50:54Round nine.
00:50:56Gregory in the red trunk and Scott in the white.
00:51:03Toni Perez Augenuri has done a good job.
00:51:17Scott again, will not let Gregory just started.
00:51:18Scott an inmate from the railway state prison.
00:51:21Where the fighters coming from tonight.
00:51:22Oh, I'm not that one.
00:51:52That is completely dominating the fight, two minutes to go in round nine.
00:52:06There have been no knockdowns.
00:52:17You know, I would say that Scott could take on any of the light heavyweights.
00:52:33I really believe that.
00:52:34He's taking on a good one here.
00:52:35I think if he continues this, none of the light heavyweights are going to want to take him on.
00:52:42Now Scott is putting on a show.
00:52:46He's very disdainful of that.
00:52:50Gregory having trouble seeing out of the left eye.
00:52:54I'll tell you, this is a testimony for what Will can do for a man.
00:52:59Willpower determination.
00:53:02He's been going around.
00:53:12I'll say this is a fight they long to remember.
00:53:19Half a minute to go in the round.
00:53:24The action is slowing a little.
00:53:27Not ever trying for the knockout.
00:53:37This is about the hardest $15,000 Eddie Gregory will ever earn.
00:53:41Oh, he's blown a big shot by this one, I'm afraid.
00:53:45For the sake.
00:53:55Gregory has no more zip in his arms.
00:53:57No more sting in his punches.
00:53:59He doesn't have any all night.
00:54:00He doesn't have any all night.
00:54:01He doesn't have any all night.
00:54:02He doesn't have any all night.
00:54:03He doesn't have any all night.
00:54:08Here we see Scott from a little show.
00:54:14In fact, he threw a devastating right hand to the body.
00:54:18I'd say this.
00:54:19Took about the mule down.
00:54:21See, that hurt.
00:54:22Just watching him again.
00:54:27The fact that Gregory's problem is the fact that he's waiting.
00:54:30He's absorbing too many shots to the body,
00:54:33which is going to slow down his feet.
00:54:36Even his arms.
00:54:37I imagine he's taking a lot of punches on his arms,
00:54:40and he must, he must, arms must feel heavy.
00:54:43Yeah.
00:54:44Well, this fight.
00:54:47Let's go to Gregory's corner right here.
00:54:54Hit it.
00:54:55Hit it.
00:54:56Hit it.
00:54:57A right hand.
00:54:58Hit it.
00:54:59A jab at the right hand.
00:55:00Let's go home.
00:55:01Hit it.
00:55:02A jab at the right hand.
00:55:03Let's go home.
00:55:04Well, what is, what is Corner is saying,
00:55:05Teddy Gregory, is to load up with a right hand.
00:55:08I think it's Corner thinks that he's lost the fight.
00:55:11Perhaps he can knock him out.
00:55:13It's well round about looking round 10.
00:55:15Well, I know for the fact that Gregory is behind in points,
00:55:18and he has to either come back strong or went,
00:55:21or either knock out.
00:55:22I would say knock out.
00:55:26I think his tactics from here on would be to,
00:55:29hope that Scott gets overanxious,
00:55:31looking for a knockout,
00:55:32a little too confident,
00:55:33and try to slip in a good right hand,
00:55:35which is his knockout punch,
00:55:37as we pointed out earlier.
00:55:39He's had 23 KOs in his 32 fights.
00:55:42So he can't punch Gregory.
00:55:49Scott is just smiling out at the audience now.
00:55:52He probably feels he's got the fight won.
00:55:55He's got the fight.
00:55:56I think he's got the fight.
00:55:57He's got the fight.
00:55:59Now, they all go up.
00:56:00president.
00:56:01Thank you, Scott.
00:56:02They're looking for a carthensit.
00:56:03That's a great choice.
00:56:04You got the fight.
00:56:05Oh, they're really looking it up in there.
00:56:06The while night at the well waste debt prison.
00:56:09Oh, they're really rucking it up in there.
00:56:14It's a wild night at the Wall-Way State Prison.
00:56:19Gregory talking to Scott.
00:56:22I'll tell you, there's some angry fellas in that ring.
00:56:25This is a gross mess.
00:56:27Scott is constantly telling Eddie to fall.
00:56:30Tony Perez.
00:56:40He's had a busy evening the referee has.
00:56:45It's one of those rights by Scott Lenz.
00:56:48Gregory's gonna have a headache tomorrow.
00:56:53Scott has completely dominated the fight almost from the beginning.
00:56:59And the crowd here seems to think so.
00:57:03One minute to go in this round.
00:57:06This is the 10th round of the 12-rounder.
00:57:12He's gonna win.
00:57:25Gregory is a good combination puncher as a rule.
00:57:28But he's thrown no combinations at all tonight.
00:57:31Most he's thrown as two punches at a time.
00:57:34And that very sparingly.
00:57:40The lift-out cricket begins to squirt pretty badly now.
00:57:4320 seconds to go in the round.
00:57:45Good.
00:57:46He's been in the round.
00:57:48Good.
00:57:49No.
00:57:50No knock downs.
00:57:51Good.
00:57:52That's how it's doing.
00:57:54Good.
00:57:55Good.
00:57:56Good.
00:57:57Good.
00:57:58Good.
00:57:59Good.
00:58:00Good.
00:58:01Good.
00:58:02Good.
00:58:04Good.
00:58:05Good.
00:58:06Good.
00:58:07Good.
00:58:08Good.
00:58:09Good.
00:58:10Good.
00:58:11Good.
00:58:12his corner like a winner he thinks he's a winner he's got two more rounds to go
00:58:17you know we've been for our working on Eddie Gregory and that Gregory's face is
00:58:22a sight he looks like he's about to cry you know two weeks ago this was supposed
00:58:26to be ten round fight but the closer the fight came the more the management of
00:58:32Eddie Gregory decided that they wanted a bit of an edge and they increased the
00:58:37fight the twelve rounds hoping that his experience and conditioning would tell on
00:58:42Scott but looks like it could be too much for Gregory that gives them at least it
00:58:47gives them two rounds more if it were a ten round fight he's a loser that's true
00:58:51you think so Sugar Ray? I will say so
00:58:56I got it five
00:59:00six three and one even I have it seven to three
00:59:08there we go in round eleven
00:59:12well it smashes by Scott
00:59:20Scott is in great condition no question about it better than Gregory
00:59:24unquestionably
00:59:26I would say Scott's in superb condition
00:59:28he surprised me I tell you he really surprised me
00:59:30surprised me
00:59:32I did not think
00:59:35is
00:59:38i was wrong
00:59:41well he certainly has no distractions in prison
00:59:43has no distractions in prison
00:59:44not at all
00:59:46that's a point
00:59:50for the next fight Gregory's
00:59:52manager might want to lock him
00:59:53up.
00:59:57What's going on here.
01:00:15Round 11 and time is running
01:00:17out on Eddie Gregory.
01:00:20This could be a costly night
01:00:24for Gregory as Larry said before.
01:00:28He's got a title shot in the
01:00:30offing with Mike Rossman.
01:00:32But who knows after seeing this
01:00:34Rossman might want to fight him.
01:00:44Gregory seems to content to throw
01:00:47out a jab and then grab.
01:00:49He may realize that he's lost a
01:00:51fight.
01:00:52And what can he do about it.
01:00:57Gregory has no firepower at all.
01:00:59At least that I can say.
01:01:01One minute left in the round.
01:01:13Of course if James Scott wins this
01:01:15fight goes on to have other fights.
01:01:17I think you're going to see
01:01:18magazine articles written about
01:01:20him.
01:01:21Many newspaper articles will be on
01:01:22television.
01:01:23This might spread the word around
01:01:25the country for other institutions
01:01:26to start boxing programs.
01:01:28And certainly here the warden who allowed this
01:01:31program to really help it take off.
01:01:34500 people here.
01:01:46There's about 40 inmates who are in the boxing program.
01:01:50And they're making all this noise.
01:01:52So you can see what it means to them.
01:01:54Almost over.
01:01:58Well there's no question up in the drill hall amongst the inmates who they think is going to win this fight.
01:02:08They feel James Scott is way ahead and I have to agree with them.
01:02:24It's a remarkable story.
01:02:25A guy incarcerated unable to go outside and do long road work.
01:02:29Go up hills down hills.
01:02:30Here's a guy who's in a cell most of the time.
01:02:33In prison 16 in the last 18 years.
01:02:36And he's about to knock off the number one contender and earn a shot at the title.
01:02:40Just a remarkable story.
01:02:42They know up here who the winner is going to be.
01:02:44James Scott number one.
01:02:46Let's go back to ringside.
01:02:50I was just talking to Matt Franklin the fine contender from Philadelphia who's supposed to fight Yaki Lopez.
01:02:59On this very evening as a matter of fact.
01:03:02And he doesn't think Gregory has a thing left.
01:03:06It's the 12th and final round.
01:03:08Gregory obviously needs to win by a knockout.
01:03:12Can he do it?
01:03:14James Scott of the white trunks.
01:03:17The amazing battler from the Rollway State Prison.
01:03:20An inmate.
01:03:23Scrawled all over Gregory in the red trunks.
01:03:26Gregory a title shot with Mike Rossman on the line.
01:03:29And is losing this fight.
01:03:39No doubt without a knockout.
01:03:41He was upset tonight.
01:03:43Scoring us on a round's basis.
01:03:45With a supplementary point system.
01:03:47If the rounds come out even on an official's card.
01:03:51We have two judges.
01:03:52Former middleweight contender Ernie Durando and Harold Letterman from New York.
01:03:57The referee is Tony Perez.
01:03:58They'll all vote.
01:03:59They're really going in there.
01:04:03The last and final round.
01:04:06There's two minutes left for Eddie Gregory.
01:04:10There have been no knockdowns.
01:04:16The only real damage has been to the left eye of Eddie Gregory.
01:04:20Outside of Eddie's feelings.
01:04:22And they must really be hurt.
01:04:26Scott is really charged up now.
01:04:31I just want to see Scott when this fight is over.
01:04:34And they announce him a winner.
01:04:36The round is half over.
01:04:38Because my thoughts are unofficial.
01:04:42The judges may disagree.
01:04:43They have before.
01:04:44And I hope they don't tonight.
01:04:47There might be a mini riot.
01:04:49And I don't mean by the inmates.
01:04:59Again Scott takes the play away.
01:05:06A minute to go.
01:05:08A minute left in the fight.
01:05:17It's hard to imagine the hopes and dreams of a man like James Scott coming to a culmination
01:05:23here like this.
01:05:24It must be an awesome feeling.
01:05:27There have been prisoners who have gone on to be outstanding fighters outside of prison,
01:05:37of course.
01:05:38Sonny Liston.
01:05:39Ron Wilde.
01:05:40Hurricane Carter.
01:05:41The half of none have left in the fight.
01:05:43And here's a man doing it right inside prison.
01:05:46Only ten seconds left.
01:05:59There will not be a knockout.
01:06:05Scott continues right to the end.
01:06:11That's the final barrel.
01:06:12A big win for James Scott.
01:06:24One to two.
01:06:25Let's go.
01:06:26One.
01:06:27One.
01:06:43That was.
01:06:44and Larry are up in the ring the
01:06:54ring is as an L.A. this is
01:06:57reminiscent of the heavyweight
01:06:58championship fights Eddie
01:07:00Gregory is walking around as
01:07:02though he thought he won but he
01:07:04thinks he won I don't know what
01:07:06fight he looked at James Scott
01:07:11he's a very happy young man
01:07:14ladies and gentlemen your
01:07:24attention please the winner by
01:07:27unanimous decision James Scott
01:07:30here are the inmates in the drill
01:07:36hall
01:07:37was he tougher than you could
01:07:41have imagined a man who's been in
01:07:43prison for as long as he has
01:07:44well I always knew he was gonna be
01:07:45tough you know we got two of the top
01:07:47fighters in the whole world you know
01:07:48this man behind bars in a little
01:07:50train he's a strong fighter you know
01:07:53he's pretty good I gave him you know he got a lot of
01:07:55credit you know I knew it was gonna be a tough
01:07:56fight you know he gave everybody a tough
01:07:57fight when you you never saw him fight
01:08:00were you nervous coming in here to prison
01:08:01oh no I'm never nervous you know I'm a
01:08:04fighter you're gonna be a fighter I should be
01:08:05nervous you think you've blown a chance
01:08:07now at the championship no because you
01:08:09can't give a good man down and I want you to
01:08:11put this in the paper I want to let me finish I want
01:08:13this in writing after I knock out Rossman I'm gonna get
01:08:16Gregory rematch because he gave me a shot and he
01:08:18would nobody else would do it
01:08:19we got the first shot at the title
01:08:21the first shot that's my word is my bone
01:08:23you've been dreaming of this for years working
01:08:25toward it a lonely a lonely vigil a lonely journey what are
01:08:29your real feelings inside now

01:08:45train and another thing if y'all can get to
01:08:48Muhammad Ali Cassius Clay as we call him Al Dickens the real
01:08:51Muhammad Ali would like to knock him out they don't want the

01:08:5810 rounds he wants to go with Clay all right Matthew were you
01:09:03ever tired and look in the middle round that you might be a
01:09:05little tired okay now I'm going to tell you the truth after I
01:09:10dug that I could knock Gregory out like I planned the best thing
01:09:14for me to do being that he's a knockout puncher is to play
01:09:16tired because if you notice every time it looked like I was
01:09:18tired I come back with a flurry so I fought my pace clinching
01:09:22holding and kicking his behind
01:09:23were you aware that he needed a knockout in the last few rounds
01:09:29I told him in his ass and he's right over there I said boy you
01:09:31need not got the witness here I should run for you but I'm
01:09:34going to bring it to you do you think your body shots told the
01:09:36difference uh I think the head shots because uh I didn't get
01:09:40to his body like I wanted to and the head shots confused him
01:09:44because he was dazed a few times but I give Gregory for being
01:09:46credit for being the strongest I ever fought in my life because I
01:09:49hit him with some good shots what can you do for a celebration
