00:00Don't go anywhere I need to get a statement from you who's involved some people that have called
00:10in said that they hit a hawk on the interstate amazing to me that he was still alive I'm watching
00:16these guys coming down and there's fire all around us today we are going to electroshock
00:22some fish it will briefly stun the fish we can net them and measure them if I find out that this
00:26elk has been shot it's potentially a felony that is crazy look at this fish that is absolutely insane
00:34these embers that are falling on us right now we should get out of here Nevada a land of extremes
00:43from the strip to the summits it's wild country home to more than 900 species and a way of life
00:52worth protecting preserved for the people and the wildlife that call it home one team
00:59stands guard this is Nevada wild
01:22I got a report of a vehicle that I had actually looked at about a month ago which appears to be
01:32abandoned there's some things about it that just look kind of off to me the windows are rolled down
01:38nothing's locked it looks really disheveled and it's not registered run the vin number and it comes back to
01:45someone in arizona that's not answering with it being a really remote area and this vehicle being
01:50out for so long it's possible this individual went for a hike and is out on the mountains and that's
01:56where my expertise and my skill set comes into play and I patrol an area bigger than some states
02:04I know springs and mountain ranges and the main roads and most of the stuff in these areas but
02:11every single year I'll get on a road and be like I had no idea that this road even existed
02:16so we're coming up on this vehicle the windows are down not likely that someone would leave a vehicle
02:22here wouldn't leave the windows down it looks to me like someone would park it like this to go for a
02:28hike a quick hike and then they would come back
02:30it's never been locked it's just open there's water food things that look like he intended to utilize it
02:43for a while normally we wouldn't go into a person's vehicle and look around but when it's a public safety
02:51issue and I'm worried about a guy's life then we have the ability to dig a little deeper without having
02:57a warrant does say right on the window here bad transmission I mean it could be leaving a note
03:02for someone hey this is has a bad transmission that's why I'm leaving it here you know you can
03:07show me out I'm gonna do a little recon up on Dutch John Mountain possible missing person things can
03:15get really dangerous really quick out here you fall and break your leg and you're only half a mile
03:20out that half a mile in the heat can kill you it can get dangerous in a hurry so I'm just going to
03:27do a trek up to that mountain range we're going to be looking for scent the smell of something dead
03:34after a month it's more of a recovery operation if there is a body out here than a rescue
03:50you ready to go let's make it happen all right let's do this I am Lisa Osborne I am with Nevada
04:00Department of Wildlife I am a fisheries biologist in southern Nevada today I am out at Hunts Canyon
04:06Creek with Connor Friel local game warden and local expert to the area my family is fourth generation
04:14Nevadan spent my whole life outside come from a law enforcement background being a game warden was the
04:19natural progression of combining love for the outdoors and law enforcement we are going to
04:24survey some fish in Hunts Canyon Creek and see what's there for an official site we measure out
04:31a predetermined length so 50 to 100 meters as a fisheries biologist we survey streams so that
04:39we can tell people what fish is where the last survey that took place here was in 1956 it summarizes
04:45fish that have been stocked from 1912 to 1956 and in that time they stocked rainbow trout brook trout
04:52brown trout there have been a lot of fish stocked in this stream in the last 100 years some of them
04:58may be here none of them may be here I expect that we will at least catch brook trout which is the local
05:04report of what's in here the reason why we would shock upstream is that any turbidity that we cause and
05:12silt that we stir up will go behind us and it's clear upstream and then also as the fish are stunned
05:20the current will just bring them right to us and right into our nets I'm going to use a backpack
05:24electro shocker it is a standardized method for surveying fish throughout north america it puts
05:30an electrical current into the water it will briefly stun the fish we can net them and measure them and go from
05:36there um I want to see if I can get something in the lowest part of this site hopefully I can catch it
05:48we've been asked in the past you know why wouldn't we just net the fish or just net a few up these are
05:53wild trout and so they're really skittish and they're gonna see us coming got them they're all
06:09brown trout oh there's a good one we are catching brown trout we expected brook trout here that is a
06:16little bit surprising it's already a species that I did not think we were going to catch
06:21they're wild here they're established we caught multiple age classes so we know that they're
06:27surviving over generations but it's really cool because now there's another species that anglers
06:33could potentially come and catch in one stream there isn't any size limit on these trout this creek is
06:40three trout in general small streams wild trout they're not going to be giant fish that you would get
06:46in a big river or a like a lake if we caught like an eight or ten inch fish that would be a really big
06:53fish for this stream okay there's one by your foot
07:01fish yeah i know the hook trout are like some people's favorite pastime from childhood but it's
07:20But it's also nice to have a place with something different,
07:22like brown trout.
07:32Oh, oh.
07:37A little water in the boots.
07:38It's OK.
07:40Whoa, jeez!
07:43This is amazing.
07:50We did about a mile loop up there.
07:55Wasn't able to see anything.
07:57Glassed up some of the cliff faces and things
08:00just in case he'd fallen.
08:03Yeah, it was definitely good to get in there
08:04and just do a preliminary search and see
08:06if we found any footprints.
08:08I'm going to do a little more research
08:09and see if we can come up with something
08:12to really narrow down who we're looking for.
08:14And the mystery remains unsolved.
08:25You see that smoke coming up?
08:27So this is the Pony Springs Fire Station.
08:30I can pull in here real quick and see if they can fill me in
08:34on where that fire is at.
08:39Looks like they're gone.
08:41They're probably out fighting that fire.
08:44I know the rancher out there, so I'm going to give him a call
08:48and see if he's all right.
08:56Hello?
08:56Hey, John.
08:58Hey, I'm looking over there from Highway 93.
09:02It looks like there's some smoke out by your guys' area.
09:04Are you guys got a fire out there?
09:06Yeah, I can see the smoke out the door.
09:09Is it making you nervous?
09:12It is now that I walked outside.
09:14I didn't see it just like 10 minutes ago when I walked out
09:17the door.
09:18So it's pretty quick.
09:21All right, call me if you need anything.
09:23I'm going to make sure BLM knows about it.
09:26OK, that would be awesome.
09:27Call me back if you guys need anything.
09:29OK, thank you.
09:30Be safe.
09:33So this fire sounds like it could be threatening a ranch that
09:37I have a really close, I mean, friends that border on family
09:42out there.
09:43Makes it a little bit personal, but also it's a public safety
09:46issue, so we're about 40 miles from it.
09:48Let's see if it's threatening any structures.
09:50I'm going to call the Bureau of Land Management and just make
09:53sure they got fire crews that know about it and they're
09:57responding.
09:58You get these really dry summers and then these storm systems
10:01that roll through and lightning strikes,
10:04and a lot of this country goes up.
10:07It's like a tinderbox.
10:09I mean, you can see out there now,
10:10it's really starting to roll up above that mountain.
10:23I mean, you can see out there now,
10:24it's really starting to roll up above that mountain.
10:32You can dispatch Becky.
10:34Becky, this is John Anderson and Game Warden
10:36with the Department of Wildlife.
10:39I'm headed towards Mount Wilson.
10:41Do you guys already have this fire reported out in Hamlin Valley?
10:44I don't think so.
10:46Smoke's pouring out back on there.
10:47All right, we'll get some stuff going.
10:49And thank you, and we might check back with you.
10:50All right.
10:51Great, thanks.
10:52Bye.
10:52Bye.
10:55That's the BLM Fire Dispatch Center out of Yealy.
10:58When we first saw it, five minutes, 10 minutes ago,
11:01it was really wispy.
11:03And now it's billowing smoke.
11:08If I can get out here and help them locate the fire,
11:12get a GPS coordinate for them so they can get in there
11:16and respond quickly and get that fire under control.
11:19One minute you're working on finding a missing person,
11:22and then the next, you're heading into the mountains trying
11:25to find a wildfire.
11:26a little water in the boots.
11:30It's OK.
11:31Whoa, jeez.
11:32This is amazing.
11:36Oh, my God, there's fish all around our feet.
11:41Oh, my God, there's fish all around our feet.
11:46Oh, my God, there's fish all around our feet.
11:50Insane.
11:51Brown trout are one of those species that can get really,
11:54really big in not very much water.
11:56That's not two feet of water.
11:57I mean, that might be a foot deep.
12:00Look at this fish.
12:01I mean, that is absolutely insane.
12:04And there were about four of these same size fish
12:07in that one spot.
12:08It's really amazing, and that's actually one of the special
12:10things about brown trout is that in a small amount of water,
12:14they can grow really big.
12:16So yeah, let's get to measuring.
12:17I definitely want a picture of that one.
12:18Yeah.
12:19When Connor wants a picture with a fish, it's special.
12:21Today was such a fun day.
12:34We got to walk around in some beautiful meadows,
12:38see some beautiful stream, beautiful fish.
12:40And so that's going to be something that's really exciting
12:44for local anglers, and people may even come to this stream
12:47this stream just for these fish now we're still 10 miles from the hermitage ranch where my friends
13:06live but the wind is blowing that direction we got to be really careful when we get in there
13:12that we don't get in and get trapped in there especially on the roads like this you can get
13:17back on a road and then the road it can burn across and then you're stuck back in an area
13:22it's no good fires are a natural part of ecosystems you can look on some of these mountain sides where
13:31it's burned 10 years ago and that's where all the critters are that's where the deer and the elk and
13:36and the wild horses and things hang out because it's such great habitat such good forage so there's
13:41pros and cons to fires we worry about the ranches around here and the people that have property and
13:47the people that live around here so there's a truck coming this way it might be jim from the hermitage
13:57how's it going jim howdy howdy how many acres are we looking at all right they hiked up and put one
14:03of the hot spots out up on um coyote side right at the y between coyote and miller it's crossed the
14:10road this side of the water springs and it's already going up if it crests over with this wind it's going
14:15to go all the way through with mccullough the way it's looking i would get out well the wind's blowing
14:20that direction yep and if it comes over that lip with this wind coming down from that face all of
14:25that's gone yeah so so this fire is in an area where it could burn into where people live the
14:33problem is that there's other fires going on throughout the state and throughout the west so
14:38resources are cut really thin right now nice to meet you nice to meet you we'll see you guys be safe man
14:49so we're going to maintain our distance from it just try to get a better idea of its size
14:55from which direction it's headed i think this is about as close as we're going to get
15:19look at this guy it's very comforting to see these planes overhead
15:25i know these are the smoke jumpers these are the best of the best these are the navy seals of the
15:30firefighting world that are dropping in and they're going to be able to figure out what to do on this
15:34fire and what resources are going to be needed going forward
15:48i'm watching these guys coming down and there's fire all around us
15:52us and there's not great places for them to land i'm going to be there to make sure that if they're
15:58landing in spots i can help them out
16:00i'm watching these guys coming down and there's fire all around us
16:14you guys good yeah okay
16:38that was terrifying you guys came down fast
16:52you guys come down fast
16:58fight fire out
17:10along with them dropping out of the planes they're dropping the tools that they use to fight fires
17:15fire fighters shovels rakes pelaski's pelaski's pelaski's are a combination pickaxe shovel rake
17:23it's a really unique tool that firefighters use to fight wildland fire
17:28how's it going man how are you good was that pretty scary coming down that's one of the
17:40that was bad air was it yeah that's not how it's supposed to go yeah you guys i was like they're
17:45coming down fast yeah yeah that was that thunder cell parked overhead and it pushes air down yeah
17:52and you guys aren't supposed to go in the trees right no no well i'm glad everybody's okay
17:58thank you right on thanks these smokejumpers they had a rough landing on the way down
18:06they usually are always able to get it under control in one way or another but this wind
18:12it's pretty threatening these embers that are falling on us right now we should get out of here
18:22you can see that tree on fire right there
18:27how's it going jim howdy howdy these smokejumpers about eight of them just jumped in
18:38i saw them so they're sending helicopters out but they're probably going to want me to be
18:43with both water bumpers going their trucks up ask them if they want to utilize it there's a couple right
18:48up here so the the firemen have asked them to bring that 400 gallons down there
19:03so
19:14good how are you guys how's it looking not good not good how many guys you guys got on it now
19:21I don't know.
19:2370.
19:25Probably 200 more on order.
19:29All right.
19:30Be safe.
19:32He's a part of the local BLM fire crew.
19:38Sounds like they don't have it anywhere under control.
19:51It's surreal.
19:59To put it in perspective, this looks devastating, but fire cycles are natural.
20:06That mountainside, and we just drove over the top of that mountain, burned 15 years ago,
20:12and it's incredible habitat.
20:14Animals are really resilient, and the good thing is that BLM's on it.
20:20The guys that know what they're doing are up there fighting it, so I'm going to take
20:23off.
20:40Are you calling Bullhead and telling them that you're on the water?
20:43Yeah.
20:44Okay.
20:45All right, I'm going to head south.
20:48Christopher Walther, game warden lieutenant.
20:50Today I'll be working with game warden Cavazos.
20:53He's a fairly new warden.
20:55For a new warden to have the opportunity to work in this environment, the experience is
21:01invaluable.
21:02We're going to be on separate patrol boats, but if something does occur, then he's very
21:05close where I can either assist him or he can assist me.
21:09Yeah.
21:10Is that?
21:11Oh, that's on land.
21:123411.
21:13Reno, 3411.
21:143411.
21:15I just turned from a bullhead to the officer who states there's an accident by North Davis
21:16camp.
21:17Would you be able to head that way?
21:1810-4.
21:19Myself, 3416.
21:20We'll be counting on the water.
21:21We'll head up there.
21:22Hear that?
21:23Yeah, North Davis camp.
21:24Yeah, let's head up there.
21:26The Colorado River in Laughlin is always busy.
21:42We launch the boats usually sometime late morning, and we are usually not surprised
21:46if we have an incident occur right as we launch.
21:49Two PWCs collided with injuries, unknown extensive injuries.
21:59Since where I got visual, I have two ambulances on scene.
22:02You can show me.
22:05When the call comes over radio of a PWC incident, a PWC is also known as a personal watercraft
22:12or a jet ski.
22:13There's not a lot of protection for those occupants on those vessels.
22:17So the first thing that runs through our mind is, okay, how bad are the injuries going
22:21to be in this incident?
22:34Hey, is he involved?
22:36I saw what happened.
22:37Okay.
22:38Don't go anywhere.
22:39I need to get a statement from you.
22:40Who's involved?
22:41This guy right here?
22:46Come here.
22:47Okay.
22:48What happened?
22:49Okay.
22:50Go up to the ambulance.
22:51See if we get information from the individual in the ambulance.
22:53Okay.
22:54Get the extent of his injuries.
22:55Do you have your ID handy?
22:56Yeah.
22:57Go get your ID, okay?
22:58Is that the ski right there?
22:59Yeah.
23:00That's your ski?
23:01When we approach an incident like this, we look at the damage that has occurred, a quick
23:14witness account of who was doing what and where they were at.
23:18Where did he hit you?
23:19Okay, where on here?
23:20Show me.
23:21Okay.
23:22In their side of the story, one ski was crossing while the other ski was going up river.
23:36How fast do you think you were going?
23:38Ten miles per hour?
23:39Yeah.
23:40Your son was on here?
23:41You're a boy or a girl?
23:42My son.
23:43Where's he at?
23:44Is he okay?
23:45Is he okay?
23:46Okay.
23:47All right, just hang tight.
23:48Don't go anywhere.
23:49So I got that ski over there.
23:50I got his contract, his ID.
23:51This is the other ski here.
23:52We need to run that.
23:53My other guy is getting information from the two victims, apparently that are both juveniles
23:56and the ambulances.
23:57Okay.
23:58Just need to know the extent of their injuries and as much contact information as possible.
24:11If you want to help him with that, see what he's done.
24:13Okay.
24:14Right now, 3411 dry.
24:19It's going to be the Arizona 342.
24:213411 clear and current.
24:242,510 Bordier.
24:28So he turns with 11 inches in range to a...
24:32Why are you at this ski?
24:33Huh?
24:34Do you own this?
24:44Why are you at this ski?
24:46Huh?
24:47Do you own this?
24:48Yeah.
24:49Is it a rental?
24:50No.
24:51OK.
24:52Just do me a favor.
24:53Just get back a second, all right?
24:54I got to get some pictures.
24:55A Reno 3411.
24:59What do you have from the juveniles?
25:02The one's on top.
25:03Those are the two victims.
25:05Any extent of injuries at this point?
25:07Uh, no, no extent of injuries.
25:09OK.
25:10Hold on to that.
25:13Yeah.
25:14So this is your ski?
25:15Yeah.
25:16Do you have the paperwork on it?
25:17Yeah.
25:18Who is operating this?
25:20Your cousin?
25:21OK.
25:22Do you write English well?
25:24No, not very well.
25:25Not very well?
25:26No.
25:27What's up, bud?
25:28What's your name?
25:29Can you write me a witness statement?
25:31Or just have your dad?
25:32OK.
25:33So I'm going to get you a piece of paper,
25:35and I'm going to have him tell you exactly what it is.
25:38What's your name?
25:39Can you write me a witness statement?
25:41Yes.
25:42And I'm going to have him tell you exactly what happened,
25:44and you just write it down.
25:45All right.
25:46Copy that?
25:47Yes.
25:48All right.
25:49Hang tight for me.
25:50It's a PwC on PwC incident.
25:54Looks like a T-bone, most likely.
25:56One individual, he remained on scene.
25:58Usually they just take off.
26:00It seems like a pretty simple just miscommunication
26:03of what the other ski was doing.
26:05Obviously, one ski's at fault, one ski's not.
26:06So we're just trying to figure out what exactly happened.
26:09He was riding with you?
26:10This one?
26:11You?
26:12Come here.
26:13How old are you?
26:1410.
26:15OK.
26:16And your dad was operating?
26:17Yeah.
26:18How fast do you think he was going?
26:2116 miles per hour?
26:22Yeah.
26:23OK.
26:28OK.
26:29So in your experience, whose fault do you think it was?
27:00So yesterday, I got a call from our dispatch.
27:04Some people that had called in said that they had hit a hawk
27:06on the interstate out here just east of Elko.
27:09I met up with these folks, and his wings were still kind of
27:12stuck out of the grill, and so were his talons, his feet,
27:16and his head were still kind of out the little hole that he
27:19went through in the grill.
27:22You know, when they hit him, it just broke a hole small enough
27:24for his body to actually go through, which was amazing to me
27:28that he was still alive.
27:29I took and I broke a bunch of this plastic grill off to
27:32where I was able to make a hole to be able to pull him
27:35out of there.
27:36And it looks to me to be a Cooper's hawk.
27:38He was able to puncture holes through the gloves that I was
27:41wearing and actually got me on the thumb with one of his
27:45talons.
27:46Are you going to be nice to me today?
27:58Got a hold of my fingers pretty good with his talons.
28:03It's always the talons and always the wings that they check
28:06just to make sure that they have full functionality of them.
28:08That's what they use to hunt.
28:10His talons still work good.
28:12This wing, it's still functioning really good.
28:15They'll put them wings out and they'll try to make themselves
28:17really big.
28:18His left wing is the one that I'm more concerned about.
28:21I think that one's the one that took the most of the damage.
28:25And I can't feel any broken bones inside there at all.
28:28We'll take him out to Spring Creek to a place out here
28:31that's got water and trees and release him out there
28:35and hopefully it'll survive.
28:44He's got plenty of fight.
28:46A good sign pointing towards a positive thing for him.
29:14I'm just going to put him over closer to the stream.
29:16That way he's got a little bit of water right there
29:18and hopefully he'll be able to shade up
29:21and recover a little bit easier over here.
29:31I feel a lot better with him being kind of underneath that tree
29:34and right here by both of these little streams.
29:37At least he'll have constant water right in there
29:39and there's going to be plenty of food here
29:41and it's going to be a quiet area for it to be able to just
29:44kind of relax, recuperate, and hopefully take off and fly.
29:56Isn't it?
29:59Yeah, it sounds good, Jason.
30:01I'll head that way and see what we can come up with.
30:05Thanks, I appreciate it.
30:07Bye.
30:11I just received a call from a landowner telling me
30:14that he found a dead elk on his property.
30:16He can kind of see some holes in the hide,
30:18but he's not certain if it's been shot or not.
30:22If it's a bull elk, there's a potential somebody could have poached it
30:26and maybe they're leaving it there and they're going to try to come back
30:28and get the head at a later time or maybe it died of natural causes.
30:53Man, what a shame.
30:54Oh, yeah.
30:56Look at how big the feet are.
30:57Yeah.
30:58What do you think about the bull?
31:01It's big enough that it could be an exit wound.
31:05A lot of times whenever something dies, you know,
31:07when the birds start picking at it, they'll usually go for a spot that,
31:10you know, a soft spot.
31:12If there was a bullet hole there, that very easily could be, you know,
31:15a spot where they would have picked around, you know, picking into there.
31:19If I find out that this elk has been shot,
31:22it's potentially a felony unlawful harvest of a big-game mammal.
31:25They could also have been hunting on private property
31:28without landowner permission and the waste of big game.
31:32That's a pretty big violation.
31:34They have to come clear it because our chopper line is on top.
31:37On the top of that ridge? Okay.
31:39And you did hear shooting back up here about a month ago.
31:43And shot.
31:45That is crazy.
31:54And you did hear shooting back up here about a month ago.
31:58And shot.
31:59That is crazy.
32:00I just can't believe that nothing's touched him.
32:02That's what's crazy to me.
32:04It makes you wonder if there's something that it actually did ingest
32:07that was toxic.
32:09Directionality-wise, it looks like he was walking this way.
32:12To a little bit thicker tree cover, possibly to lay down.
32:16Pretty good hole in the front end of it.
32:18I'll just run the metal detector over and see what we come up with.
32:22If it ends up being something that somebody shot,
32:24we'll definitely see what we can come up with,
32:26because this is, it's a shame.
32:28All right.
32:29Well, we're going to let you do your thing.
32:32I see a couple of holes in this elk.
32:34It's been laying here for quite a while.
32:36I'm going to get my metal detector out, see if I can't find, you know,
32:40bullet fragments, a possible bullet laying somewhere close to the elk.
32:45Maybe the birds have picked through it and they were able to find the bullet.
32:48And a lot of times, if they do, they'll spit it out really pretty close to the carcass.
32:52Somebody was to shoot an animal.
32:54A lot of times they're going to try to shoot it to kill it.
32:57So most likely your bullet, you know, if you do have a bullet in there,
33:02you're going to either recover it, you know, in that rib cage area.
33:06A lot of times they're going to be trying to shoot for vitals.
33:09Sometimes you'll get false hits on some of this stuff too.
33:12So I'd always end up getting like a false hit off of a femur bone.
33:16It seems like these larger bone structures.
33:24I'm not getting anything there at all.
33:28I'm not getting any hits.
33:42It's getting a hit a few times right in here.
33:52I think it's just a false hit.
33:53But what I'm doing right now is I'm peeling this layer back.
33:56I'll run the metal detector over it again,
33:58make sure that it was just that, a false hit.
34:08I think I can be relatively safe to say that there's nothing there.
34:11You can see that this bull had a ton of rumen
34:15and hardly any of it is digested,
34:17which makes me think that there was possibly something
34:20that he ingested that triggered his brain
34:23to make him think that he wasn't getting enough food.
34:26And like he wasn't digesting it at all
34:29and just basically gorged himself to death almost.
34:32I'm not getting any hits with the metal detector.
34:34I'm not seeing any broken bones.
34:36Can't completely rule it out,
34:39but I can almost say with 95% confidence
34:42that this elk died of natural causes versus being shot.
34:46I think we'll leave it at that
34:48and tell the biologists where it's at
34:50if they want to come out and take a look at it.
34:52This is Nick?
35:04Hey, Nick, what's going on?
35:06Hey, not a whole lot.
35:07What's happening, Matt?
35:08You got a dead bull up over there.
35:09Yeah, there's a dead bull up here on Cronin's property.
35:12Do you want me to take any sample of the rumen?
35:15You know, if it's not too gross.
35:17Yeah, it's not bad, Matt.
35:19I mean, it's a little bit wet, but I can take it.
35:21Cut a femur and the head off.
35:23That'd be great.
35:24Because the head of the femur can harbor some bacteria.
35:26That's not a problem, Matt.
35:27I can go back up there and cut the head off,
35:29and I can cut you a section of femur out and get you a sample.
35:33Yeah, perfect.
35:35These dang elk, we've got to figure this stuff out.
35:37Perfect.
35:38I really appreciate it, thanks.
35:39Yep, not a problem, Matt.
35:40All right.
35:41All right, bye.
35:42It's good for the biologist to be able to get samples like this.
35:45I mean, maybe he knows of an outbreak of larkspur.
35:48Larkspur is toxic to elk.
35:51He's going to be able to get these samples into the wildlife lab,
35:54and they'll be able to get the results back to him,
35:56and then he'll be able to know what it is that he's looking at.
35:59With the samples that we got and the samples they got from that cow,
36:01we could get a little bit closer to finding an answer
36:04of what's killing these elk here.
36:18Whose spot do you think it was?
36:19I think it was them.
36:21We were going, like, everywhere.
36:23Just straight?
36:24We were going this way.
36:25Okay, were you scared?
36:26Yeah.
36:27Do you have your life jacket on?
36:28Yeah, I see shit over there.
36:30Okay.
36:31All right, man.
36:32What grade are you going into?
36:33You get a six?
36:34What do you want to do when you grow up?
36:36No, come on.
36:37You're just saying that because I'm here.
36:42Okay, good.
36:43So the rest of the day, you tell your dad to be careful, huh?
36:45Okay.
36:48How was his witness statement?
36:50His statement was the cousin and brother on the ski.
36:53Yup.
36:54They were going up this way, circled back.
36:56Uh-huh.
36:57Then they were on the other side of the river about to come over here to park the ski.
37:00Okay.
37:01The other ski was coming upriver and they turned to port.
37:03Yeah.
37:04That's how?
37:05When an individual who's operating a PWC is at fault for an incident, in some instances,
37:10they will receive a citation for a violation of the rules of the road or a Coast Guard navigable
37:14rule.
37:15If we find that we can't really determine who is at fault, usually those issues will be resolved
37:21via civil court and or they'll have to deal with the rental company for damage to the PWC that occurred.
37:26We're going to have to take a ride over to the hospital and get as much information from every
37:31side as possible in order to do a thorough, complete investigation.
37:34We're going to head back out on patrol now.
37:56Wait for a second.
37:57Wait for a second.
38:00Wait for a second.
38:01Wait for a second.
38:02Hey, hey, hey, huh?
38:07Come on.
38:09Hey.
38:10Hey!
38:11Get out of the way.
38:17Hey, hey!
38:21Get out of the way.
38:23Can I hear you?
38:25ma'am yeah we got it you got a life jacket on right okay so you're good relax okay
38:32nepal come tie up on my port side ma'am ma'am just relax just relax okay we're gonna help you
38:38all right to be floating in the colorado river is it's quite dangerous even if you have a life
38:43jacket on there's so much chop sometimes that they may not see you bobbing up and down and
38:49you could potentially get run over by a pwc i want you to turn around and hold on to my boat okay
38:54okay give me your hand okay
38:59hold
39:01reno 34-23-j
39:0730 below the cabin waiting
39:11reno 34-11 drive
39:12the current is usually six to eight miles per hour for operators who don't have a lot of experience
39:37on a pwc if they end up stopping and getting turned sideways in that current it will usually
39:43throw off their center of gravity and the bounce and they'll fall over the water so a lot of our day
39:48is spent picking up people and or overturning pwcs that they have fallen off of so it's just part of
39:53the job that we do and it does happen quite frequently
40:0234-11 can you confirm the subject is code 4 and if there's any specific equipment they'll need to bring
40:08that's up right now code 4. um just making sure she's trying to get the land
40:21just float just float down
40:23carry on just go to shore
40:42so what happened let's see break this real quick
40:46so he fell off the ski
40:46and uh so i went over there to help him out yeah you know i was trying to just talk him through
40:52getting on the ladder but she wasn't she wasn't able to get on the ladder that's when you kind
40:57of showed up okay we could have gotten her on if she helped she was not healthy he wasn't holding
41:04my hand any day in laughlin incidents are going to occur but as long as we're out there and we're
41:11trying to help the public and enforce recreational boating safety i mean that's all you can do
41:16prices avoided
