00:00Travel is in my blood.
00:02Let's go.
00:03This is the best.
00:04For years I worked as a tour rep,
00:06following in the footsteps of my dear lovely mob,
00:09a hard-working, no-nonsense travel agent.
00:12Thanks to our money-saving tips,
00:14we managed to budget our way to a place that totally captured our hearts.
00:18Look at this! Look at this!
00:20Florida.
00:21I love it!
00:24I was born for Little Havana.
00:26And now the Sunshine State is a big draw for me.
00:29Sorry, I'm still on your foot.
00:31And my son, Aidan.
00:33You see him, mate?
00:35Yeah.
00:37But with holiday prices rising...
00:39Oh, my goodness. I'm in heaven.
00:41Can you do Florida...
00:43Without breaking the bank?
00:45$4.99 for these.
00:47Oh, yes, Aidan!
00:49Help you, Mum. Otherwise, just get out.
00:53It's the best day of my life.
00:59Right, after this red car, son.
01:01After this red car, I'm all over this.
01:03I'm all over...
01:05Move your head.
01:07It's quite literally the end of the road for me and Aidan,
01:09on our budget-savvy Florida foray.
01:11The best road trip you've ever been on, isn't it?
01:13To be honest.
01:14Taking the journey.
01:15Oh, that's nice.
01:16Not the destination.
01:17We've enjoyed it, haven't we?
01:18We really have.
01:19US Route 1 has taken us as far south as it possibly can for one last adventure.
01:23We're heading to Key West, babes.
01:24One of the most populous spots in the Sunshine State.
01:26Oh, we've made it, Mum.
01:29U.S. Route 1 has taken us as far south as it possibly can for one last adventure.
01:38We're heading to Key West, babes.
01:42One of the most popular spots in the Sunshine State.
01:46We've made it, man.
01:48The tip of Florida.
01:49I know.
01:49Isn't it lovely?
01:51Yeah.
01:51They say people, when they come here, they can be anything they want.
01:55And they're one of the most happiest people in the whole of Florida when they come here.
01:59Really?
01:59Yeah.
02:00That's a pretty big reputation to hold.
02:02Yeah, it's true.
02:02Apparently, when they come here, they never want to leave.
02:05They want to stay.
02:06I want to find out why.
02:07Let's find out what makes them so happy.
02:09Really?
02:11Famed for its year-round raise, lively nightlife and friendly chickens that free range around the place,
02:18I'm told this tropical paradise can be pretty pricey.
02:22But fear not, us Hammonds are going to unlock some thrifty ways to do Key West without blowing
02:30a hole the size of Cuba in our bank account.
02:34Which is just over there, incidentally.
02:38My first thrifty tip, dump the hire car.
02:42They cost a fortune, don't they?
02:43And with the island being so bijou, just four miles long, you're much better finding alternative
02:49ways to get around.
02:52Oh, there it is.
02:53Yeah.
02:54Let's get trollied, Babs.
02:57Hello, everybody.
02:59Hello.
03:00We've come on board to meet a man in the know, Clinton, who's going to give us a little insider
03:05knowledge to get our Key West party started.
03:09Clinton, I'm loving this bus ride already.
03:11What is it about Key West that is so incredible?
03:13The weather, the smell of the ocean, you're seeing the ocean, there's like a really great
03:17connectivity to it.
03:19It's such a terrific community as well, very welcoming.
03:22You kind of put all of those pieces together and I can understand why people always want
03:27to come back.
03:28I don't ever really want to leave.
03:29So, you know, so I get it.
03:31Key West is famous for a giant native sea snail called a conch.
03:38Well, I say conch, but Key Westerners, they say conch.
03:42If you're born and bred here, you can call yourself a conch too.
03:46And if you've lived here for seven years or more, you're a freshwater conch.
03:50So, this island is conchers and Clinton is a conch OG because he's mastered the art of
03:58putting the honk into the conch.
04:01Of course, the snail grows the shell.
04:03We eat the snail in conch fritters, conch chowder, conch salad.
04:07But what are you going to do with the shell afterwards?
04:09No.
04:10We make horns out of them.
04:11No.
04:12And so, yeah, so this is actually a horn.
04:15And if you ever played any kind of brass instrument in any band, you can already play a conch corn.
04:22You ready?
04:23Yeah, I'm ready.
04:23Okay, all right, watch your ears.
04:25Just a little.
04:25Go on.
04:29It's like a shit.
04:30Yeah, take a breath.
04:31You're so good at that.
04:32I've been doing it a very long time.
04:34We all learn as little kids how to play the conch corn.
04:37Everything here is very conch-centric.
04:40You're telling me.
04:42And now someone else wants to get in on the conch craze.
04:47Can I have a go?
04:48I want to have a little go.
04:48I'll have music.
04:49Absolutely.
04:50That one is for you.
04:51This one's for me.
04:54There you go.
04:55So good.
04:56He's got it down.
04:58First time, that was all right, wasn't it?
04:59First time, right?
04:59Absolutely.
05:02I can see Aidan's come out of his shell.
05:05The Hammonds are here.
05:07So that is my gift to y'all.
05:10You can take that home.
05:11Oh, my God.
05:12No, don't give him that gift.
05:15I'm like, oh, I wouldn't have no pieces quite when it come out.
05:17Oh, my God.
05:18Put it inside your carry-on luggage.
05:19It's the worst present ever.
05:24Clinton's suddenly going down, in my estimation.
05:27But he could turn it around with some top local tips.
05:31So we're here all day.
05:33What would you recommend we do?
05:34Everyone that comes here, you want to get on the water.
05:37Go to some of the great restaurants.
05:39Try Key Lime Pie.
05:40Oh, yes, I've got to try that.
05:41From sun up to sun down, there is something for everybody.
05:46I love it.
05:48Hold up.
05:49Did he just say pie?
05:50Oh, my.
05:52Sounds like we've got a fun day ahead of us.
05:54But first, I'm going to ride this trolley for all it's worth.
05:58I'm well on board with this, babes.
06:02It's like a little toy town, isn't it?
06:04It's so cute.
06:05Key West, here we go.
06:08It's 50 bucks for one day's unlimited travel.
06:12But that also gets you two guided walking tours
06:16and entry to a local museum.
06:18And to top it off,
06:19they give you a book of coupons for local restaurants.
06:22Oh, I love a coupon.
06:24Who doesn't?
06:24Plus, up here, we can float above the streets,
06:28safe in the knowledge that our parking isn't about to run out.
06:32Win-win.
06:34And we all have a new wedding day.
06:36Pretty good.
06:36Yeah.
06:38And can we just hear it for our tour guide?
06:40He's so friendly.
06:42Takes me back to my days as a holiday rep,
06:45picking up passengers from the airport.
06:47I love getting on that mic.
06:49First stop, a Key West landmark.
06:53The furthest south you can possibly get
06:55in the whole of the continental US of A.
06:59So the southernmost point buoy,
07:01just here to your right-hand side.
07:02Oh, look at that.
07:0390 miles to Cuba.
07:05Just 90 miles?
07:06Yeah, just 90 miles across the Florida Straits.
07:09And as you can see,
07:10it's a very popular location to have your picture taken.
07:13There's a queue?
07:14Yeah, there's a queue almost every day.
07:16One of the most sought-after photos on the island.
07:19That's unbelievable.
07:20Great spot.
07:22We Brits are drawn to a queue like moths to a flame.
07:28And I'm not going to miss an opportunity for a selfie.
07:33That would be madness.
07:35We can't go without getting our selfie, can we, Bab?
07:37No, we can't.
07:38We're here now.
07:39In truth, this isn't even the southernmost point in the US of A.
07:44That's actually around the corner,
07:46on an off-limits naval base.
07:48But let's not let that get in the way of a good photo opportunity.
07:52Look at her, she's really going for a pose.
07:54Shall I show everyone my music?
07:55No, please don't.
07:57I'll be saying back.
07:57Oh, no, don't...
07:58We're going to lock horns if this carries on.
08:04It's so embarrassing.
08:07Right, let's show them how it's done.
08:1390 miles from Cuba.
08:16Gracias.
08:19Got it.
08:22Surprising fact, Key West is actually closer to Havana than Miami.
08:27Before the highway was built and long before the Cuban Revolution,
08:30it was easier for locals to sail south to Havana than travel north to Miami.
08:37Lovely.
08:37Amazing.
08:38Sorted.
08:39Let's go.
08:39With Key West being an island, one of the best ways to enjoy it is to get out onto the crystal-clear waters,
08:57which, if you're not careful, can cost a fortune.
09:01Boat trips and water sports are pastimes you pay a premium for here, especially if you're
09:08not part of a group where you can split the cost.
09:10You could go solo and snorkel at Fort Zachary Park.
09:17But there are ways to get out on the water where you don't have to push the boat out.
09:23Well, you do, obviously, but not financially, at least.
09:26Good morning.
09:27I'm Captain Brian.
09:28How are you?
09:28Nice. You're a hugger.
09:29You are, yes.
09:32This boat trip is not costing us a dime, because me and Aidan are volunteering for the army,
09:38the Marine Army.
09:40Nice boat.
09:42We're talking trash babes, offering our services to help clean the ocean.
09:48Do you need any help?
09:49Let's go.
09:53The Conk Republic Marine Army is a team of volunteers who are taking action to clean up the Florida
09:59Keys waters.
10:01We call it making friends in trashy places.
10:05Anyone can join in, as long as you're willing to get a little bit wet.
10:09I've got it. I've got it. I've got it. I've got it. I've got it.
10:12Nice.
10:14You can take that home and hang it up in your old house.
10:16There you go.
10:17I've got the trash.
10:20Yeah.
10:22It might not look like there's too much floxam and jetsam on the surface here.
10:26I'll get it.
10:27I think you can.
10:28Right?
10:29Yeah, right hand side, yeah.
10:30All right.
10:31Nice. Get it in trash.
10:33I've got it.
10:33Yeah, two.
10:35But these guys are removing rubbish on an industrial level, relying solely on local goodwill to make
10:42it happen.
10:43We're going to be selling pool noodles at the end of the day for $5 to raise money.
10:47Every month, the volunteers pull out four truckloads of junk.
10:52They're on track for 20 tonnes this year alone.
10:56That wraps up around a propeller.
10:59That'd be a bad day.
11:00Much of it down to the ever more frequent storms battering the Florida Keys.
11:07Oh, it's a big ball.
11:08Look at that.
11:10There's still more.
11:12Brian, I'm actually quite shocked at how much rubbish is coming out of this ocean.
11:17Look at all this rope.
11:18Yeah.
11:19This is called trap line, which is rope that attaches the buoy to the lobster or crab trap.
11:25And in storms like hurricanes, they all get torn to shreds and distributed.
11:29And we have about a million of these pots in the Florida Keys in the water.
11:33And about 15% of them get cut off.
11:36And no one has ever cleaned up the Florida Keys like what we're trying to do.
11:39It's unbelievable.
11:40How did this all start off with you, Brian?
11:42It was Hurricane Irma in 2017.
11:44It came through in September.
11:47And it destroyed our home.
11:49And you needed a way to vent.
11:51And an easy way to vent was to find a couple of sofas that were in the water.
11:54And I said, I'm just going to go get one of those out.
11:57So I made a Facebook post.
11:58And 25 people showed up to help me go get that sofa.
12:01So I made another post saying, let's do it again.
12:03And four weeks later, I had 125 people show up just looking for something different to do than live in misery.
12:08And then since then, we've pulled out 250 tons of trash, 94 refrigerators, which is crazy, numerous Cuban chugs, one kilo of cocaine, and a couple of messages in a bottle.
12:22So we've done 54 miles of the shoreline, very clean.
12:25There's 900 more to go.
12:27So we're not even at 10%.
12:28Wow.
12:29So this is a mega problem.
12:30Everyone agrees that cleaning up our environment here in the Keys is the number one priority.
12:34Our water quality is what we live on.
12:36No one visits here for the cheap rent and the fresh fruits and vegetables, as I say.
12:40It's for the weather and for the water.
12:42And if we don't have that, you know, why come?
12:44Has this changed your life, Brian?
12:45Amazingly.
12:46There's nothing better, honestly.
12:47This is a much better way of spending the day than the normal touristy things, in my opinion.
12:52Yeah, I agree.
12:52And I get the benefit because I meet all kinds of people like you.
12:55And here we are.
12:56You and I are making friends for life.
12:57Yes, definitely.
12:58I'm family now, Bob.
12:59I'm in this Marine Army forever.
13:01Yes, you are.
13:01And I'm not alone.
13:05Numbers have now swelled to a massive 5,000 volunteers, all willing to get into deep water to do their bit for the local environment.
13:15You did a good job.
13:16The great thing about this, as well as having no impact on my wallet, is that the whole family can get involved.
13:27There we go.
13:29A piece of stuff.
13:31There's one of our little creatures here saying thank you for picking up this habitat.
13:35That's so cute.
13:36That's one of our local residents here.
13:38He wanted to say thank you for picking up all this trash and trash running out of the water.
13:41You can't play that one, Aide.
13:44That is a fun.
13:45That is what I'm safely back in his environment.
13:47Put him back in his home.
13:47Thank you very much.
13:49All cleaned up.
13:51As well as the feel-good factor and the fact that it's free, one of the other perks is you get lunch thrown in too as a reward for your efforts.
14:01We're going to go right in here to this little cove.
14:04And if you look over there, there's a big white, looks like a sail.
14:07I can see it.
14:07And it looks pretty big.
14:09And it doesn't belong there, so let's go get it out.
14:11Let's go do it.
14:11Time to get stuck in.
14:15You're going to sink down just a little bit when you get there, but it's not terrible.
14:18It's not happening.
14:19Let's help, Mama.
14:21Yeah.
14:21I think I'm going to get wet.
14:23It is what it does.
14:24It is.
14:25Yep, just go slow.
14:26Just go really slow.
14:28Am I in it?
14:29Yeah.
14:30Quite literally.
14:32Oh, I've gone really low.
14:33Yeah, same.
14:34My foot is stuck.
14:35That's right, come on.
14:36Pull it.
14:36Just move it up gently.
14:38I was the same.
14:39I was the same.
14:40I've got some trash.
14:45Oh, there's loads of bugs on it.
14:46Yeah.
14:47The thing is, once you start, you can't stop.
14:50What a bottle, Brian.
14:51Nice.
14:52Got any other trash?
14:53There's a lot of rug left in here.
14:54Any more plastic in there?
14:56Lovely.
14:57Alison, how you doing?
14:58Good for this one.
15:00Oh, yeah.
15:03I'm not going to lie.
15:05It's not exactly glamorous, but getting down and dirty is kind of liberating.
15:10Do you know what?
15:11I'm actually really enjoying this.
15:13It also gives you more of an appreciation about when people throw rubbish away.
15:18You know what?
15:19It could end up in this beautiful, beautiful spot, and we don't want that.
15:25No, no, no.
15:26These guys are working so hard.
15:29All these volunteers are working so hard.
15:32They're not the only ones.
15:35Hey, Alison, look at Aiden.
15:36He's addicted now to getting trash.
15:38It's bizarre, the things we found.
15:42Nice job, buddy.
15:44That's getting it done.
15:45Good work, guys.
15:48Well done, son.
15:50Well done, darling.
15:52You've just done so well.
15:53I know.
15:53There was so much trash.
15:56It was just constant.
15:56Yeah, it's mad, isn't it?
15:57I can't believe it gets caught up here.
15:59I mean, we found, what?
16:00We found a lemon squeezer.
16:02Did ya?
16:02It's so random.
16:03Let me take that home.
16:04A gas can.
16:05And a gas can, yeah.
16:07Really random stuff.
16:08But it was good fun.
16:09I enjoyed it.
16:09And you're giving something back as well.
16:11It's so good.
16:11You really are.
16:12Wow, dumb babes.
16:14I'm really proud of ya.
16:15It's a lovely feeling, actually, cleaning up.
16:17I was going to say, how do you feel in here?
16:18Really good in my heart, actually, yeah.
16:20It's a lovely thing to do.
16:21You visited the keys and you gave back.
16:23Come back and see us again.
16:24Thanks for coming.
16:27Sure, you can splash the cash
16:29and experience more luxury on the water.
16:32But this is so much more satisfying.
16:35And between us, me and Ade
16:37collected over 14 pounds of trash.
16:40So many bottles, pool noodles
16:43and that lemon squeezer.
16:45And this sense of island community spirit
16:47is really starting to come across.
16:49There's a saying the locals use on this island
16:57that pretty much sums them up.
16:59We're all here because we're not all there.
17:03Key West has always been a place
17:05where larger-than-life characters can feel right at home.
17:09Over the years, the island's all-embracing lifestyle
17:12has inspired some colourful eccentrics to put down roots.
17:16From Tennessee Williams to Jimmy Buffett,
17:19who wrote Margaritaville.
17:21But perhaps its most famous resident
17:23was America's literary legend.
17:27The Nobel Prize-winning, heavy-drinking,
17:30deep-sea fishing, bar-brawling genius,
17:33Ernest Hemingway.
17:35Or just Papa to his fans.
17:38For just $18, you can visit the house he called home.
17:42Now a museum with guided tours included.
17:44Legend has it, Hemingway loved to frequent
17:50the bars along Duval Street, especially this one.
17:54So how does Key West celebrate its connection
17:57to such greatness?
17:59Well, in typical Key West style,
18:01by gathering every Hemingway lookalike on the planet.
18:06Sloppy Joe's has been in this location for 87 years,
18:10and for 43 of those years, we've hosted
18:13the Hemingway lookalike contest
18:15where guys show up from around the world
18:18to say, I want to be the next Papa.
18:21That's a hell of a lot of facial hair.
18:23Local resident Tim Stockwell
18:25is one of Key West's keenest competitors.
18:28I was sitting at this very bar
18:30and somebody came up and said,
18:32are you here for the contest?
18:33And I didn't know anything about the contest.
18:35I said, what contest?
18:36So they brought down the application for me.
18:38Great den, I filled it out
18:40and made it to the finals my first year.
18:44So I've been to the finals all five years.
18:46I've been to the contest
18:46and I made it in the top five twice.
18:50So you never know, next year could be a good year.
18:53The competition is stiff, mind you,
18:55with lookalikes identified all over
18:57from New Zealand to Norway.
19:00What you have is a lot of eccentric guys
19:02showing up for this, right?
19:03And they want to show their flair.
19:05So we come with guys that have bullhorns
19:07through their shirts with blood all over it.
19:09We have people come in all kinds of safari outfits.
19:12One year we had a guy show up in a tightrope.
19:16You never know what you're going to see
19:17show up on that stage for Hemingway Days.
19:20And as well as entertaining the locals,
19:22this zany contest raises over $100,000 each year
19:27towards scholarships for students in the Florida Keys.
19:30I think that Papa would have loved the fact
19:33that we're giving away a lot of money
19:34to keep people here in his beloved Key West
19:37and the Florida Keys.
19:38But what would the great man have made
19:40of this island today?
19:43I think what he would particularly like
19:45about Key West now
19:46is it has kept its eccentricity.
19:49The tolerance for being eccentric and outrageous
19:52or being who you want to be
19:54is, it thrives here.
19:58Almost as famous as Hemingway
20:00is another Key West classic.
20:02Something else we've been told not to miss
20:04while we're here.
20:05As if.
20:09I'm so excited
20:10and I'm so glad that Clinton said
20:12that we've got to try Key Lime Pie.
20:14That's why I brought you here.
20:16What, Pepe's?
20:16Award winning Key Lime Pie.
20:18You are.
20:19Well, if it's award winning,
20:20it's good for me.
20:21Come on.
20:23You can't come to Key West
20:25and not try Key Lime Pie.
20:28It would be like going to Brom
20:29and not having a bowl tea
20:31or Cornwall
20:32without devouring a pasty.
20:35There's a chicken behind you.
20:37Even the local chickens
20:38want to get in on the action.
20:41If you wanted to save a few dollars,
20:43you could get them as takeout
20:45and eat them on the beach
20:46or in the park.
20:48But these guys have been making
20:49Key Lime Pie
20:50for almost 100 years.
20:53And the Key Lime King
20:55is Danny.
20:57Hello, good people.
20:58How are y'all doing?
20:59Hi.
20:59We're good.
21:00How are you?
21:00Hello, Danny.
21:01It's wonderful to see you, dearest.
21:03Lovely to see you.
21:05How are you?
21:06Like a new pair of pants
21:07ready to rip, okay?
21:08I heard there's no calories
21:10in your Key Lime Pie.
21:11There's absolutely no.
21:12Is that true?
21:13Oh, the Key Lime Pie.
21:15No.
21:15I'm not going to say that.
21:17There's a lot of calories.
21:18We make it fresh.
21:20Can we get two of them?
21:22That's why I brought my mum here.
21:24I wanted her to try the Key Lime Pie.
21:25Well, guess what, friend?
21:26I think we can make this happen, okay?
21:28That's what you're going to get.
21:29Are you going to join us?
21:30I actually will join you.
21:32Yeah, come on.
21:32Let's clean the Lime Pie.
21:34Do we just need one
21:34and then three spoons?
21:36If you'd like to,
21:37I would love to share
21:38a Key Lime Pie with you.
21:39Let's share.
21:39Oh, no, you're a young strappling man.
21:42I'd have the whole thing.
21:43I'd have the whole thing.
21:44Well, guess what?
21:45You're getting the whole thing, okay?
21:46Amazing.
21:47Thank you, darling.
21:48Thank you very much.
21:49Thank you, man.
21:50The creamy, biscuity delight
21:52is said to have started here in Key West
21:54back in the late 1800s.
21:58Made with the tiny, yellowish Key Limes grown here,
22:01it was a no-bait treat
22:02that early settlers whipped up
22:04with whatever they had on hand.
22:07Fishermen even took the pies out to sea
22:09for a sweet pick-me-up.
22:11Yep, sometimes the oldies
22:13really are the goodies.
22:16Inform your cardiologist.
22:18Welcome to Key Lime Pie.
22:20I think I'm going to want this recipe.
22:22We make it from the ground up,
22:24so literally we do the graham cracker crust,
22:26Key West Key Limes,
22:28and condensed milk,
22:30and all those things
22:31that are really heart-healthy, okay?
22:33Cheers, everyone.
22:34Cheers.
22:34Cheers.
22:35That's right.
22:36Oh, wow.
22:38Oh, my goodness.
22:38I feel like I've just pied
22:40and went to heaven.
22:42I have had this for breakfast before,
22:44by the way.
22:45Yeah, that's good.
22:46Really?
22:47That is delicious.
22:48Oh, my Lord.
22:50This is great.
22:52This is really good.
22:53Wow.
22:53These recipes go back to 1931.
22:56Wow.
22:56OK?
22:57This goes back that far.
22:59Before air conditioning.
23:01Really?
23:01Yes.
23:03I'm actually regretting sharing this with you.
23:05LAUGHTER
23:06Is the recipe a secret?
23:09No, I'll tell you,
23:10but I'd have to kill you, OK?
23:11LAUGHTER
23:12Honestly, that is delicious.
23:14Thank you very much.
23:16Sorry, I can't speak right now.
23:18I'll be honest with you.
23:19It's not often I'm rendered speechless,
23:22but I need to find my voice again,
23:23because before we go,
23:25I've just been given a tip-off
23:26about another quirky perk
23:28in this restaurant.
23:29I just found out
23:31that this telephone box,
23:32it gives free international calls,
23:35so I thought, you know what?
23:36I'm going to call my sister,
23:37but I've only got three minutes to do it in.
23:39This was introduced for the locals.
23:42I hope that's an number.
23:46What?
23:47When it was the only phone working
23:49on the whole island during a hurricane,
23:51it was the only way
23:53to keep in touch with family.
23:55Hello?
23:56Sandra, it's Alison.
23:57Hello.
23:59Hello, darling.
24:01How are you?
24:02I'm all right.
24:03I'm actually calling you from Key West.
24:06Oh, wow.
24:08Hemingway country.
24:10Yes.
24:11I'm absolutely loving it.
24:12Oh, my gosh.
24:12Have we taken lots of pictures?
24:14Babes, I've done one better than that.
24:15I've made a show.
24:16I've made a show.
24:17All you've got to do
24:18is watch Florida Unpacked.
24:19You're going to love it.
24:20Florida Unpacked?
24:21Where's that on?
24:22Babes, don't you worry.
24:24I'll send you all the deets.
24:25Oh, my gosh.
24:25Well, give me the heads up.
24:27Give me the heads up.
24:28You're going to love it.
24:28I'm so loving to hear you, babe.
24:29Oh, I miss you, sis.
24:31I'll miss you.
24:32And I'll see you when you get back.
24:33I love you, babe.
24:34Bye.
24:34Bye-bye.
24:35Bye-bye.
24:35Bye-bye.
24:35Bye-bye.
24:36Bye-bye.
24:36Bye-bye.
24:36Bye-bye.
24:36How cool is that?
24:39Aw.
24:41I feel like I've got
24:42a little piece of home
24:43here in Key West.
24:44Aw.
24:44Aw, Sandra.
24:49She's a bit like Key West, my sister.
24:51Eccentric and welcoming.
24:55As the light starts to fade,
24:58there's one more sight we need to see.
25:00And it doesn't cost a dime.
25:04Mallory Square is where the locals and tourists meet up
25:07to celebrate what people say
25:09is one of the best sunsets in America.
25:13And if you're expecting serene and spiritual,
25:16think again.
25:18This is something else.
25:21There's a carnival atmosphere every day.
25:26We just need to get the low down on the sundown
25:28from local musician Mike.
25:32What on earth is happening here?
25:34There's so many people.
25:35It's like a big, massive party.
25:36Every night, seven days a week,
25:38if that sun's going down,
25:39people are here.
25:40There's vendors,
25:41there's performers playing music.
25:43Then the sunset's just a cherry
25:44on top of the ice cream.
25:45All day we've been asking people
25:47why do they love Key West so much?
25:49Why do you love it?
25:50The people.
25:51The people make it what it is.
25:52The people bring that energy,
25:53that spirit to the town.
25:55If you need help, they got you.
25:56The weather's great,
25:57the food's amazing,
25:58but the people are what make Key West Key West.
26:00Beautiful.
26:01Aw, that's lovely, Dave.
26:04You know what?
26:05I think Mike's nailed it.
26:07We came to Key West,
26:09wanted to know why this tiny island
26:11at the very bottom of Florida
26:13draws so many to its shores
26:15and why they never seem to want to leave.
26:19I feel like we already know
26:21why people keep coming back to this place.
26:23I mean, look at that.
26:24What a sunset.
26:25I feel like that's one of the main reasons
26:27why they come back.
26:28Have you noticed how happy everybody is as well?
26:32Everyone's loving it.
26:32Everyone's happy taking photos.
26:34And they're so proud to show off Key West, aren't they?
26:37Yeah, they really are.
26:37They want to talk about it.
26:38They love their city.
26:39I totally get it now.
26:40You can see why people here have a blast.
26:45There you go.
26:46That's so good.
26:47But don't take themselves too seriously.
26:51And they definitely eat well.
26:55Are you still thinking about that key lime pie?
26:57I am.
26:58It was so nice.
26:59Really nice.
26:59This conch-crazy island has captured my heart.
27:04Key West has shown that sometimes
27:06the best things in life really are free.
27:13And as the sun sets across the Florida Straits,
27:17it's also setting on our Florida adventure.
27:23Look at this.
27:23Look at this.
27:25Oh, yes, I did.
27:27And what an adventure it's been.
27:29Go, Dolphins!
27:31We've kayaked.
27:33This is actually so lovely, Aidan.
27:36Just having some quiet time with me and you.
27:38We've danced.
27:41We've parasailed.
27:42This is one of the most wonderful things
27:44I've ever done in my life.
27:46Unbelievable.
27:47We've done so much.
27:49I never expected that.
27:51It's been the best time in my life.
27:52And I feel closer than ever to Aidan.
27:55I can't tell you how lovely you look.
27:57And my dear mum.
27:59I got a little bit emotional.
28:00Yeah.
28:02She would have loved it, hey?
28:04Oh, Aidan, I can't believe we're at the end
28:07of our incredible adventure.
28:09Do you reckon this is the last adventure
28:11now that you're 19 that we're ever going to have?
28:13It can't be.
28:13I've enjoyed it.
28:14Really?
28:14I really enjoyed it.
28:15Oh, it's been lovely.
28:17Let's do it again sometime.
28:20Yeah, let's.
28:21But not this year.
28:22Yeah.
28:23Ha-ha-ha.
