08:05A whopping 40 million Americans now own one.
08:09And 40% of them are millennials.
08:11So it's the younger generation who are packing up,
08:14hitting the road and discovering America.
08:17And I get it.
08:19Driving your hotel room, your kitchen and your dining room around with you
08:24wherever you go is a great way to save money.
08:27And when you add it all up, hiring a motor home like this,
08:32along with the all-important cost of insurance,
08:34works out way cheaper than paying separately for your accommodation and transport.
08:38And there's no expensive restaurant bills either.

09:20So a lot of RVers buy themselves an annual state park pass.
09:24That gives them access to pretty much any outdoor experience Florida has to offer.
09:30For our road trip, we're heading north to Silver Spring State Park.
09:35And the clue is in the name.
09:37The waters here are apparently a bit like me.
09:40Fresh, chilled and super easy going.
09:43But like, you know, when we're back in the UK and we're driving around the UK,
09:46you go into like Skegness and places like that.
09:48I think this is going to be very different to Skegness somehow.

12:57This park covers a lot of ground.
12:59It's about four times the size of Sherwood Forest
13:02and its woodlands and waterways have been popular
13:05with peace-seeking Floridians for more than a hundred years.
13:08If you listen very carefully,
13:10you might hear the famous echo of a man in a loincloth,
13:13yelling as he swings by on a vine.
13:16They used to shoot the old Tarzan movies here.
13:19And being a 90-mile drive from Orlando,
13:22anyone with an RV in that city can be here in just a couple of hours.

15:00Well, living full-time for, what, six months.

17:27Just an eight-mile drive down the road
17:30takes us to another good-value, outdoorsy tradition.
17:34The driving.
17:36The ideal spot to take your RV when you fancy some really big screen entertainment.
17:41Run by John Watsky.
17:43Doing everything you can to keep on driving the driving.
17:47The driving was built in 1948.
17:50Run continuously until about 2002.
17:53Then it shut down for about eight years when I discovered it and reopened it.
17:59Most of John's customers are Floridians.
18:02And many of them are so keen on a bit of Alfresco Americana,
18:06they drive more than a hundred miles to get there.
18:09I have customers that drive two and a half hours or more.
18:12I've had people who bring their couch from their living room.
18:15I've had them come on a horseback.
18:16I've had them come bring a pontoon boat.
18:19Any way you want to watch the movie, that's how they do it here.
18:22Whether you come by car, boat or RV, the price is the same.
18:27For around a fifth of the price of a single ticket at a multiplex,
18:31you get to see two movies here.
18:34The first movies are always geared toward the children
18:37and the second movie is geared more toward the adults.
18:40So when the children get tired, they go to sleep
18:42and mum and dad gets to watch their movie in peace and quiet.
18:46What keeps the prices low is John's rule that each vehicle
18:50must buy a concession voucher to spend on food or snacks.
18:54And this is hearty stuff.

19:04with ham salami, martedilla, provolone cheese
19:07and Swiss cheese topped with an olive dressing.

19:58because right now, not only does the word muffalata sound amazing,
20:02but the idea of ten dollars for my very own personal muffalata
20:06sounds like the best deal I'm going to get tonight.
20:09You might not believe me, but when I was at school,
20:19I had no trouble finding the geography classroom.
20:22And this place is the perfect spot to share my expert knowledge,
20:26because the waters here all come from a thing called the Florida Aquifer.
20:31Florida is basically a massive rocky sponge.
20:34The porous limestone layer beneath the state filters rainwater over thousands of years.
20:40And some of that water springs up here,
20:42joining a network of waterways that criss-cross the landscape
20:46and draw in adventurous RVers and geography experts from all directions.
20:51This is going to be brilliant. Look at this.

20:55We've come to see for ourselves just how clear the water is here.
20:59And if we're lucky, spot a fish or a turtle or even a manatee.

21:16and I've kept coming back to this park since I was a small child.
21:20Why do you think you keep coming back? What is it about this park which everyone loves?
21:24So I would say that this park really shines out on the water.
21:29You see tremendous amounts of wildlife.
21:31You never know what you're going to see the next time.
21:33The water is crystal clear, isn't it?

21:36So this water is 99% pure.
21:39So when you look down into the water, you can see all the way to the bottom.
21:44Whenever I go out on a cool morning, it's a very serene experience.
21:50Really something that you don't get at, you know, a mainstream theme park in Florida,
21:56or a crowded attraction.
21:58It's something between you and nature.
22:01And, you know, everything's going to be all right.

26:40We set out to try and see the world the way the locals do and go where they go.
26:52To try and avoid the hustle and bustle and hefty bills all at the same time.
26:57And hiring RV from a local was a great way to do both.
27:02It's been fab getting back to nature and a simpler way of life.
27:06And to do it all on a budget.
27:08We're here in this beautiful state park and we haven't even had to leave Florida.
27:13So yeah, I've loved every minute of this.
27:16RVs are big.
27:17But once you get your confidence, they're a really cool way to see Florida.
27:21The country lanes here are a bit easier to navigate than the ones back home.
27:25And you've got all the thrills and excitement of camping without ever straying too far out your comfort zone.
27:32So I'm converted and I'm already feeling sad about handing back the keys.
27:37But would you do it all the time?
27:39Not all the time, but a lot of the time to help save money here and there.
27:43Maybe for like two days, I get like a little camper van.

27:47And then I'd want to go back to like normal.
