00:00The Defense Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia signed ceasefire agreement to
00:13end weeks of military escalation in Boru conflict. In Venezuela, President
00:21Nicolás Melo warned that it will be impossible for the United States to impose
00:25a colonial model and take over Venezuela's resources. In Honduras, workers and peasants
00:34expressed a rejection to the U.S. interference in the nation's elections.
00:38Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Sophie Fernandez from the Telesur Studios in Havana,
00:47Cuba. We begin with the news. Stay with us.
00:55On Saturday, Thailand and Cambodia announced the signing of a ceasefire agreement, putting
01:09an end to 20 days of fighting over a decades-long border conflict. According to a statement by
01:15the Thai and Cambodian Defense Ministers, both sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire, which
01:22is thanks to all types of weapons and attacks on civilians, civilian objects and infrastructures,
01:32and military objectives of either side. The agreement puts an end to the weeks of fierce
01:37fighting along their border that has killed more than 100 people and forced the displacement
01:42of more than half a million civilians in both countries. The agreement was signed by Thai Defense
01:48Minister Nathafun Narek Panigit and his Cambodian counterpart, Thea Shea, and is set to take effect
01:55at noon local time.
01:56In other news, at least one person died and 26 others were injured in a multiple vehicle crash
02:10on a Japanese expressway late on Friday. On Saturday, the Gunma Prefectural Highway Police
02:16announced that a pileup on the Kan-Ensu Expressway had begun with a collision between two lorries
02:22in Minakami, a town located approximately 200 kilometers northwest of Tokyo. A 77-year-old woman
02:30from Tokyo was killed, and five people were reported to be in a serious condition. The crash occurred
02:36in snowy conditions as the country began its end-of-year holiday season. The crash trucks
02:42blocked parts of the expressway and cars approaching from behind were unable to break on the slippery
02:48road's surface. Police said that more than 50 vehicles were involved in the accident.
03:06In the United Kingdom, activists stormed a London shopping center to denounce Israeli crimes
03:22against the civilian population in the Gas Strip. A massive protest by hundreds of activists
03:28brought to London's Westfield's Tarfer City shopping center to a standstill after protesters
03:34stormed premises, closing dozens of stores and commercial spaces. The protest was intended
03:40to raise awareness among the British public about Israel's genocide against the Palestinian
03:44people in Gaza, which, since October 7, 2023, has claimed the lives of nearly 71,000 Palestinians.
03:53This protest joins the growing global rejection of Benjamin Netanyahu's regime and its policy
03:59of extermination against the Palestinian civilian population.
04:09According to the Palestinian Journalist Syndicate, Israel's systematic campaign of violence against
04:14journalists has peaked in 2025, with dozens of members of the press being targeted. In a
04:21statement released on Friday, the Syndicate's Freedom Committee said that Israel is implementing
04:26a policy of silencing the press by killing, injuring and causing permanent disability to journalists.
04:32The Israeli occupation is now neutralizing the press with deadly force to silence witnesses
04:38and prevent the documentation of crimes. By November 2025, at least 76 Palestinian journalists
04:44have been killed or wounded by Israeli forces, a dangerous indicator of the authorities' escalating
04:50targeting policy. Journalists are now confirmed and frequent targets.
04:57The Russian Federal Security Service prevented an attack on a Defense Ministry officials in Stavropoulon by Ukrainian forces.
05:17The operation led to the disruption of a terrorist blood targeting a high-ranking official of the Ministry of Defense
05:24in the city of Stavropoul, in the south of the country. According to the official statement issued by the agency,
05:32an individual was arrested in the act of placing an improvised explosive device in a vehicle parked near a military unit.
05:40The authorities specified that the explosive device had a destructive power equivalent to 400 grams of Tlinikotro-LN.
05:47And the Ukrainian plan to resolve the conflict, presented on Wednesday, has drawn harsh criticism from Russia.
05:56On Friday, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabov said that Ukraine's 20-point plan differs radically from the 27-point draft that Russia and the United States have been working on since early December.
06:09Ryabov accused Ukraine and the European Union of intensifying their efforts to scupper the agreement as a solution approaches.
06:24The diplomat argued that the outcome of the negotiations would depend on joint efforts and political will on the part of Washington.
06:40Moscow declared itself fully prepared to reach a peaceful solution and expressed hope that its US counterparty would adopt a similar approach.
06:49In Venezuelan homes, Christmas and New Year's are celebrated with traditions, beliefs and small rituals.
07:14Some steam from cultural roots, others have been added over time, but all express the same wish.
07:21To begin the New Year with hope.
07:23We invite you to explore these practices that are part of the December celebration in Venezuela.
07:29A hundred years ago, Venezuela was mostly rural.
07:33Today, more than 80% of its population lives in cities.
07:37This social change has also transformed the ways in which Christmas and New Year's are celebrated,
07:43giving rise to a cultural phenomenon known as acculturation.
07:48What is acculturation?
07:50It's when cultural models foreign to the idiosyncrasies of the population are tried to be imposed.
07:57The characteristic example is Santa Claus, little trees that imitate pine trees.
08:03We don't have snow here, although there is a pine tree they call the Caribbean pine, from which they make paper.
08:10But these aren't our customs.
08:12They are foreign customs.
08:15That's why we speak of acculturation.
08:18New Year's rituals show how traditions adapt to everyday life.
08:25Each family transforms grapes, lentils, colors and suitcases into expressions of hope, prosperity and collective wishes for a better year.
08:34The thing about the suitcase is that we grab it.
08:39And then when it's 12 o'clock or after 12, we have the suitcase ready.
08:43And then we grab it and go to the patio of the house.
08:45And there we do our suitcase ritual.
08:48Well, each grape you eat is a wish you make.
08:51You have to make 12 wishes with your 12 grapes.
08:54And the lentils, well, we throw those up in the air so that it brings prosperity, abundance and so that we never lack anything at home.
09:01In Venezuela, wearing yellow for prosperity or red for love is a part of New Year's rituals.
09:09Each color is a symbol of hope and good fortune.
09:12The rituals are the Christmas dinner, as always, ayaka, ham, ham bread, wine, of course.
09:21And regarding the emotional aspect, we always wear yellow clothes.
09:26There are some people who wear red clothes, right?
09:29And, well, those who want to travel go out with their suitcase to have good omens and a good trip in the coming year.
09:39Every tradition, every color and every shared meal celebrates family unity and renews the hope for a year full of prosperity and well-being.

13:47which have made the People's Republic of China a global benchmark and model.

14:22Welcome back.
14:29In Honduras, workers and peasants expressed a rejection to the U.S. interference in the nation's elections to impose a new president.
14:38The demonstrators called on the entire Honduran workforce to continue denouncing the electoral coup in the country
14:44and praised the labor achievements of the government of Xiomara Castro and her Liberty of Refundation Party.
14:50They also expressed their concern about the return to power of the National Party, recalling that it was the same party which carried out the 2009 coup against then-president Manuel Zelaya and remained unconstitutionally in power until 2021.
15:05This electoral process has left much to be desired. I don't understand why it should be partial.
15:18What was the rush, the urgency, to declare at the presidential level when the special count has not even been finished?
15:23The C&E leaves much to be desired in these general elections. And we Hondurans must learn our lesson.
15:29Let's learn the lesson. Let's demand respect from the political class. And above all, let's demand electoral reforms that are urgent at this time. Urgent electoral reforms such as the second round.
15:40Because we must remember that not only the presidential election has been reviewed, but also the other two levels. So the work has been advanced.
15:52So all that remains for me to say to the Honduran people is, let us be patient, because on December Terry, as a New Year's gift, the C&E will give us the completion of the declaration at the two election levels that are needed.
16:05This meeting has been organized urgently. In light of the deep political crisis, the country is experiencing and key sectors such as farmers, rural women and indigenous peoples cannot be left outside this crisis.
16:23Moving on to Peru. On Friday, the National Association of Journalists of the country demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible for the murder of journalists, Mitzar Castillejos.
16:39The organization has condemned the crime and demanded that the Human Rights Persecutor's Office and the National Police conduct a swift investigation into the murder of Castillejos, who was shot dead by hitmen on December 12.
16:52The reporter was attacked leaving home and died on his injuries on Friday.
16:58The association says the journalist had repeatedly denounced a large fund's irregularities in Aguayita.
17:04This is the second journalist to be murdered this month, after Fernando Núñez, a reporter from the town of Guadalupe in the northern province of Pacas Mayo, was also killed by a hitman.
17:15While in Argentina, the Senate approved on Friday a budget that slashes funding for sensitive sectors such as education and science.
17:30Voting on specific articles is now underway, but Article 30, which seeks to slash funding for education, technical training, public universities and scientific research, has already been approved.
17:43The article repeals laws that guarantee a minimum percentage of GDP is invested in education, science and technology.
17:52This includes a minimum of 6% of GDP for education and the progressive growth path to reach 1% of GDP for science and technology.
18:02The initiative will also impact the finances of technical and vocational education, which has already complained about cuts and delays.
18:09In other news, five Costa Ricans were killed and many more were injured in armed attacks in the country in the last 48 hours, mainly due to the Christmas holidays.
18:28This year, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, saw more than violence than usual in contrast to previous years, when these periods were calm.
18:36This year has already seen around 900 homicides.
18:40Between 24th and 25th of December, 14 people were treated for gunshot or knife wounds.
18:46Five others arrived at health centers without vital signs and are under judicial investigation.
18:53The Costa Ricans Red Cross transported around 3,000 victims to medical centers, 62 of whom were in critical condition.
19:01There was an emergency approximately every 55 seconds during that period, due to firing and settling of scores.
19:08The National Institute of Meteorology of Brazil has issued an orange alert due to intense heat waves in the southeast of the country.
19:18According to the agency, thermometers in these areas should register several degrees above the normal December temperature, constituent an official heat wave.
19:25The Civil Defense Department reports that there have been storms in seven cities over the last few years.
19:27The National Institute of Meteorology of Brazil has issued an orange alert due to intense heat waves in the southeast of the country.
