00:00:00And we bring you back live to ringside with world light heavyweight champion and boxing after dark expert Roy Jones Jr.
00:00:06And Roy, six months ago, Michael Grant had this heavyweight heir apparent status pretty much all to himself.
00:00:13But since that time, David Tua has re-emerged with a spectacular knockout of Hasim Rahman.
00:00:19Aiki Bayabuchi has again come out of nowhere to knock out Chris Bird.
00:00:23And a lot of people are talking about them at least as much as they're talking about Grant.
00:00:28So does Michael come into this fight now under pressure to improve his business prospects, not just by beating Savarese, but by looking spectacular as well?
00:00:37Yes, he has to come out here and show that he is the next man in line for a heavyweight title shot.
00:00:42If he doesn't, then people are going to want to see the other guys.
00:00:45There are not many exciting fights in the heavyweight division anyway, so people want to see excitement.
00:00:49They want to see somebody that they can look forward to for a very exciting night when it comes to a heavyweight championship fight.
00:00:54So it's important that Michael Grant do just that tonight.
00:00:58And it's, of course, excitement that both Tua and Ibeabuchi furnished within the past six months.
00:01:04So now we see what Grant can do against the veteran Savarese.
00:01:08Larry, Grant's detractors point out one particular statistic, which is that CompuBox numbers show he gets hit at an inordinately high rate.
00:01:18Some would say big target, big strike zone.
00:01:21Can Lou Savarese knock a hole in that target tonight?
00:01:25Might, but let's keep in mind that Lou Savarese is a big guy and a big target himself.
00:01:31Look, it's natural to put under the microscope a fighter who is being touted as a potential future champion,
00:01:39to check him out, to see what flaws he might have, and so on and so forth.
00:01:44That's just a part of the deal when you're getting into the spotlight.
00:01:49Are you worthy of that spotlight?
00:01:51So far, all we've seen under that microscope, really, are harmless bacteria,
00:01:55because although Grant has been hit, he hasn't really been hurt, and he's always fought back very well.
00:02:01Lou Savarese calculates that the opportunity to hit Grant is well worth the risk because of what the reward would be if he gets there first with the Moses.
00:02:16But Grant must think the opportunity is there for him, too,
00:02:19because he gave up $100,000 of his guarantee for this fight to lure Savarese into the fight.
00:02:27$100,000 subtracted from what he gets, added on to what Savarese was going to get for this fight.
00:02:35They both think they got a shot. That's why it's a fight.
00:02:38All right, let's take a look at the tail of the tape for these two post-modern heavyweights,
00:02:43both of them big, chiseled athletes.
00:02:46Savarese, at 240, gives away 16 pounds and 2 inches to the giant Grant,
00:02:52who was a high school and junior college baseball, basketball, and football star.
00:02:58Grant also with a 6-inch reach advantage over Savarese.
00:03:02Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
00:03:05The Michael Grant-Lou Savarese fight once again is scheduled for 10 rounds
00:03:09using rules of the New York State Athletic Commission non-title.
00:03:13The standing egg count is in effect.
00:03:15The three-knockdown rule is in effect.
00:03:17The referee or the doctor can stop the fight, and it cannot be saved by the bell in any round,
00:03:23including the 10th and final round.
00:03:25Jim.
00:03:28Thank you, Harold.
00:03:29Home court advantage tonight for Lou Savarese, raised in the Catskills,
00:03:34lives in lower Manhattan, startlingly busy in one of his big HBO performances against Foreman,
00:03:41lost a decision in that fight, later lost a knockout to David Aizan,
00:03:46but a good lesson to all young heavyweights.
00:03:48Savarese makes the biggest paycheck of his career tonight
00:03:51because he kept being willing to take tough fights.
00:03:57You don't have to be a heavyweight to take that advice.
00:04:00Every fighter should listen to it.
00:04:02He's a two-time former Golden Champion here.
00:04:05He's a baseball player as a high school athlete,
00:04:08and he's getting married in July.
00:04:12Savarese had a tryout with the Mets.
00:04:14Michael Grant has a tryout, or had a tryout, with the Kansas City Royals,
00:04:18so the question is, are these the two best baseball players ever to meet in the heavyweight division?
00:04:24Well, they're both as big as Mike McGuire.
00:04:26And here comes Mark McGuire boxing, Michael Grant, six feet, seven, 256 pounds,
00:04:34knockouts in each of his last five fights,
00:04:37none of them spectacular one-punch destructions of his opponents.
00:04:41He tends to wear them down with his size and his technique.
00:04:45He's more of a dominator than a terminator,
00:04:48but at the end of the fight, they raise his hand.
00:04:54They always have.
00:04:55Like his good buddy, Evander Holyfield,
00:05:13Grant leans toward the spiritual for his entry music,
00:05:18and appears to be in a Holyfield-like rapture
00:05:23as he celebrates his entry into the ring.
00:05:26Close a look, Larry.
00:05:27Multi-talented, plays the piano.
00:05:30There might be a little bit of a problem with his protective cup,
00:05:34which rides very high on his narrow waist,
00:05:36and some protests have been made about it.
00:05:39He was married last summer,
00:05:41and Evander Holyfield was an usher at his wedding.
00:05:45Here's a picture of that wedding.
00:05:47And it could be a problem down the road,
00:05:50because Evander says he's so close to Grant,
00:05:52feels so good about him that he doesn't want to fight him.
00:05:56And if Evander should recapture his title,
00:05:58that will mean that this man will have to wait even longer to get a shot at him.
00:06:03Of course, he also shares a trainer, Don Turner, with Holyfield.
00:06:07And Turner is on record as saying,
00:06:09if they ever met, he would train Grant, not Holyfield.
00:06:12Let's go to Michael Buffer for the official introductions.

00:08:29And,
00:08:30he is rated by many experts,
00:08:32as the best heavyweight,
00:08:34in boxing today.
00:08:36Ladies and gentlemen,
00:08:37from Norristown,
00:08:39Pennsylvania,
00:08:40presenting,
00:08:41the undefeated,
00:08:43Michael
00:08:44Graham!
00:08:45Okay, buddy.
00:09:02All right, Michael.
00:09:03Michael, let's go.
00:09:04Let's go.
00:09:04Let's go, guys.
00:09:06Good evening, gentlemen.
00:09:07I went over all the rules in the dressing room.
00:09:09Let's touch gloves,
00:09:09and have a good, clean fight.
00:09:10Good luck.
00:09:11Two big guys,
00:09:16two big punchers,
00:09:18shoot out at the KO Corral.
00:09:21Let's go.
00:09:21Come on, let's go.
00:09:22First thing Savary's did
00:09:23when he walked to the center of the ring
00:09:24for referee's instructions
00:09:25was to look down and check out
00:09:27Grant's protective cup,
00:09:28trying to see exactly how high that thing was.
00:09:31The discussion about it took place
00:09:33during a fighter meeting yesterday.
00:09:34Savary's got curious,
00:09:35said exactly how high is that thing.
00:09:38It's not as high tonight
00:09:39as it has been on some other occasions,
00:09:41but Grant's handlers acknowledge
00:09:43it tends to ride up.
00:09:47Cuts down on the strike zone.
00:09:53Let's go.
00:09:54Let's go.
00:09:54Let's go.
00:09:55Savary's,
00:09:56for this fight,
00:09:57dispensed with long-time
00:09:59trainer and cut man Tommy Gallagher,
00:10:02and hired the veteran Jesse Reed
00:10:04to come in from Texas.
00:10:05Reed,
00:10:06one of the most effective in the sport
00:10:08at maximizing the minute between rounds.
00:10:12One thing about these two heavyweights,
00:10:13both of them seem
00:10:14not to be very good experienced heavyweights.
00:10:17They don't box with the enthusiasm
00:10:19and the experience
00:10:19that the two heavyweight champions box with right now.
00:10:22They're still learning inside of the ring.
00:10:24Reed,
00:10:24no punches,
00:10:25step back.
00:10:25As we mentioned,
00:10:36the Achilles heel for Grant,
00:10:37if there is one,
00:10:39he gets hit with a high percentage
00:10:41of his opponent's punches.
00:10:43Savary said,
00:10:43hey,
00:10:44that's going to be my chance.
00:10:45I'm going to take it right to him.
00:10:47Savary's loving to tell the story
00:10:49of having run into a fan
00:10:51on the streets a couple days ago,
00:10:52and the fan said,
00:10:53well,
00:10:53you can't mix it up with this guy.
00:10:54You're going to have to stay away
00:10:56and box and move,
00:10:57and Lou laughed and said,
00:10:58you haven't seen me fight,
00:10:59have you?
00:10:59Come on,
00:11:00Michael.
00:11:00Come on,
00:11:00Michael.
00:11:05Grant with a hard right hand
00:11:07driving Savary's into the corner.
00:11:10Come on,
00:11:10Michael.
00:11:10Let's go.
00:11:10Come on,
00:11:11box now.
00:11:11Let's fight.
00:11:11Let's go.
00:11:13Let's go,
00:11:13Michael.
00:11:13Let's go.
00:11:14Both fighters trying to get to the body
00:11:15in the first round,
00:11:16and now Savary's
00:11:17connects with a quick little chopping right
00:11:19upstairs.
00:11:20I think this fight will come down
00:11:30to a conditional war.
00:11:33No punches.
00:11:34No punches.
00:11:34Step back.
00:11:35Let's go.
00:11:35Step back.
00:11:36Let's go.
00:11:37Well,
00:11:37as you're watching in the NBA playoffs
00:11:39right now,
00:11:40in basketball,
00:11:41opponents tend to tire badly
00:11:43trying to play against Big.
00:11:46Savary's has to play against Big here,
00:11:48and he's not used to it.
00:11:49He's not used to it.
00:11:50He's not used to it.
00:11:50He's not used to it.
00:11:51He's not used to it.
00:11:52He's not used to it.
00:11:53Well,
00:11:54he played against Big George.
00:11:56Come on.
00:11:56Keep up.
00:11:56Keep up.
00:11:56Keep up.
00:11:57And never wore down in that fight.
00:11:59He was still pumping in the 12th.
00:12:01Yes,
00:12:01he was.
00:12:09Come on,
00:12:09Michael.
00:12:10Let go.
00:12:10Let go.
00:12:10Let go.
00:12:13Come on.
00:12:13Break.
00:12:13No punches.
00:12:14A little short by Grant.
00:12:33Tactical first round.
00:12:35Both fighters had their moments.
00:12:36Nothing big landed.
00:12:43Right here, right here.
00:12:44Where's the one?
00:12:45Right here.
00:12:46You got it.
00:12:47You're too tame on that side.
00:12:50Too tame on that side.
00:12:52You got to throw punches, hard punches.
00:12:54Come out with your hands up.
00:12:56Now watch this, strip it up, okay, guys?
00:12:58I want to take it down.
00:12:59Okay, we'll put it down.
00:13:01Now you can hit it with that right hand when you get close.
00:13:03When you duck in, you can hit it with the right hand over the top.
00:13:05Put a little more juice to it.
00:13:06He's going to try to go to your body, okay?
00:13:08He's going to try to go to your body.
00:13:09You block pretty good over that cone over there.
00:13:11He'll try to hit you in the body.
00:13:12So it may react.
00:13:13Time to reach out to the bop-bop and get right off.
00:13:15Get right off.
00:13:16You're doing good.
00:13:17I'm going to fix his belt, okay?
00:13:18All right, so don't rush out.
00:13:20When you're inside, step to the right and throw the right hand over the top.
00:13:23It's open.
00:13:24It's open.
00:13:25Move to the right.
00:13:26Keep busy.
00:13:27Stay busy.
00:13:28Stay busy.
00:13:29Stay here until the bell rings.
00:13:30Stay here until the bell rings.
00:13:31Stay there.
00:13:32Stay there.
00:13:33Our graphic in the Savarese corner described Al Bolden as the cut man.
00:13:37That's not really fair.
00:13:39Bolden is the trainer who works with Savarese in the gym day in and day out and has throughout
00:13:44his career.
00:13:45Savarese just likes to have another guy talking to him during the fight.
00:13:48That's what Gallagher did.
00:13:49That's what Reed will do tonight.
00:13:51Referee Jim Santa took a look at Grant's protective cup as he came out of the corner for the second
00:13:59round and decided it was okay.
00:14:01Grant's people say they've tried to make a custom-made cup that wouldn't ride so high, but that they
00:14:09can't find one.
00:14:10Calvary says they're insulting our intelligence when they tell us that.
00:14:19Logic tells you that until some governing body or state commission absolutely forces Grant
00:14:24to change the cup, he's not going to change it.
00:14:26I don't blame him.
00:14:27Why should he?
00:14:28He shouldn't.
00:14:29They don't make you change it.
00:14:31No punches.
00:14:32Step back.
00:14:33Come on.
00:14:34Amarisa's fighting a more measured fight than he gave us reason to believe he would.
00:14:46Well, sometimes guys don't throw as many punches when they don't like what's coming back.
00:14:51Well, that's exactly right, and maybe something happened in the first round that changed his
00:14:56reach.
00:14:57He thought he would have to stay on top of Grant and upset his rhythm.
00:15:01I think what happened is he expected Grant to use his reach, which Grant never does,
00:15:06which is why heavyweights make so much contact with him.
00:15:09I think he was expecting Grant to keep him on the outside, and he would have to struggle
00:15:14and give up punches to get inside to land punches.
00:15:17That's a great point.
00:15:18Grant gives away his height advantage by letting guys come inside.
00:15:21And that's bad for him.
00:15:22That's why I said he doesn't fight with the experience number that the heavyweight champions
00:15:26are fighting with right now.
00:15:27And you saw Savary's take advantage to land that sharp right hand over the top.
00:15:31Right.
00:15:36Keep him up, okay?
00:15:37Let's go, let's go.
00:15:38Savary's talking to referee Jim Santa about Grant's low blows.
00:15:43Grant's trainer Don Turner says, well, Michael doesn't tend to start fighting until he gets hit.
00:15:47He's been hit now.
00:15:48And he's going to get hit a few more times because he's right there for Grant to hit him.
00:15:53He doesn't use his advantage.
00:15:55There's true God-given advantage, which is his height and his reach.
00:15:58Click off, Michael, click off.
00:16:01Do you like this six-foot-seven-inch, 255-pound heavyweight to be a boxer?
00:16:07No, I don't want to be a boxer.
00:16:08I just want him to use his reach and fight from the outside.
00:16:10Only fight inside when he has to.
00:16:12Who should he watch?
00:16:14Who's the blueprint?
00:16:15Who's the blueprint?
00:16:16Molly's hair is tonight.
00:16:17Well, I don't know who's a few Lewis.
00:16:19Lewis Lewis is, yeah.
00:16:21That would be a good person to watch.
00:16:23Because Lewis is a big man and fights like a big man.
00:16:27Early before was a good blueprint to watch.
00:16:29A good blueprint to watch.
00:16:30A good blueprint to watch.
00:16:32A good blueprint to watch.
00:16:42Now, please.
00:16:43Try and lay my right hand.
00:16:44I will.
00:16:45Try and lay my right hand, I caught.
00:16:46It didn't bother.
00:16:47It's been waiting too long.
00:16:48Get it off.
00:16:50Understand?
00:16:51You got to come out there with your hands up, too, Mike.
00:16:55You got to come out with your hands too long.
00:16:57Okay, and you got to throw punches and come and you shoot your punches you to drive your punches with that you're doing great
00:17:03Take a deep breath. He ain't got you yet. Did you keep your hands up if you keep your hands up good?
00:17:08Just like you in the gym nothing no different
00:17:12Okay, early in the round Savarese landed that right hand on the cheekbone
00:17:19Same punch Grant rode with the punch. He took the sting out of it
00:17:22By CompuBox numbers Grant with the edge through two rounds particularly in jabs where he's landed 20 of 79 only 5 of 41 for Savarese
00:17:34Savarese landing at a much lower connect percentage than other Grant's opponents have been able to do in recent years incidentally
00:17:41Grant wearing Grant gloves Savarese wearing Everlast they both agreed to that difference Aaron how do you have the first two rounds?
00:17:49Yeah, Jim, I got a 20 to 18 2 to nothing Michael Grant. I think he's killing him with the left hand to tell you the truth
00:17:54Lou Savarese has to pick up the pace to land some more clean shots
00:17:57But boy, I tell you when you got two quarters like this the referee doesn't break him up real quick
00:18:02It's gonna get fellas molasses. He's got to break him up fast
00:18:05Step back
00:18:05I gave the second round to Savarese
00:18:10Body shots for Grant
00:18:15And Savarese with blood over the left eye now telling referee Jim Sattler that he got hit by Grant's head
00:18:33Savarese is talking so much to referee Jim Sattler
00:18:36He's not always paying attention to Grant while Grant pounds into the body
00:18:40And he has a bad cut over his left eye too from the head fast if it was a head
00:18:43There's so much scar tissue around Lou's eyes and he lands a right across the top
00:19:00Body shots by Savarese
00:19:02Uppercut by Grant
00:19:03Another Grant uppercut lands
00:19:05Another Grant uppercut lands
00:19:07Come on guys
00:19:11Come on
00:19:13Let's go
00:19:15Let's go
00:19:17Let's go
00:19:19Let's go
00:19:21Let's go
00:19:23Come on
00:19:25Come on
00:19:27I don't understand why Grant is holding on here
00:19:41left hand trying to protect
00:19:43his right eye.
00:19:46And Grant is beginning
00:19:47to score at will with his uppercuts.
00:19:52I don't understand
00:19:53why Grant is holding on here.
00:19:56Are you right?
00:19:57No, he doesn't really want to fight inside because
00:19:59the only punch that's working from inside is the uppercut.
00:20:04See right here
00:20:05he doesn't feel comfortable because he goes
00:20:07off for too long to throw real power punches
00:20:09right there.
00:20:10Come on, come on. That's why I wanted
00:20:12to stay outside for a 6'5 guy.
00:20:14Now Frank, come on.
00:20:15Should Santa be working harder
00:20:18to keep him apart? No.
00:20:19It's not his job to keep him apart. It's Grant's job.
00:20:22But I think Grant feels he can wear
00:20:23stuff when he's down.
00:20:25You know what?
00:20:29Five seconds.
00:20:32Five.
00:20:35Against
00:20:36many opponents, Grant is
00:20:38able to simply bide his time
00:20:39until the opponent
00:20:40tires of trying to climb the mountain.
00:20:43Listen here, man.
00:20:45You're too lackadaisical out there.
00:20:48Let's get with this, baby.
00:20:49Okay.
00:20:50Let's get with this.
00:20:51You got to get rid of it, man.
00:20:52Come on, let's go.
00:20:53Get them punches in combination.
00:20:55You got that right hand
00:20:56that melts into his head.
00:20:57Okay, well, what you got to do
00:20:58is you got to pivot
00:21:00and keep this guy in front.
00:21:01Keep him in front.
00:21:02There you go.
00:21:03How was it?
00:21:04No problem.
00:21:05Just don't lay your head
00:21:07on that right side.
00:21:08Move it both ways, all right?
00:21:10How do you feel, John?
00:21:11Good.
00:21:12Don't lean in.
00:21:12Savarese throws a right hand.
00:21:21Didn't land cleanly.
00:21:23Grant seems open for that punch.
00:21:26That right uppercut inside.
00:21:28Jarred Savarese.
00:21:30Now, for the first time
00:21:32between rounds there,
00:21:33Jesse Reed stepped into the corner
00:21:35in front of Lou Savarese,
00:21:36taking the place
00:21:37that had previously been occupied
00:21:38by Al Bolden.
00:21:39And Reed told Savarese,
00:21:41loosen up, relax, throw punches.
00:21:44Why are you so restricted in there?
00:21:46Well, he looks tight.
00:21:47I commented earlier, Jim,
00:21:49that he's not fighting the fight
00:21:52he wanted to fight
00:21:54to upset Grant's rhythm,
00:21:57as he put it,
00:21:58by staying inside and being busy.
00:22:00Come on, keep him up, come on.
00:22:04Let's go, keep him up.
00:22:05Let's go.
00:22:08All right, right hand by Grant.
00:22:10And that one buckled Savarese momentarily.
00:22:13Yes, it did.
00:22:13Oh, no.
00:22:15Low blow by Savarese.
00:22:17Hey, come here.
00:22:18Come here.
00:22:18Hey, come here, Michael.
00:22:19Come on.
00:22:20Come here.
00:22:20Both you guys.
00:22:20Let's go.
00:22:21If the undercomps are both tall guys,
00:22:23keep the punches up.
00:22:24Let's go.
00:22:24Both of you.
00:22:26Savarese felt if the referee
00:22:27wouldn't take care of it,
00:22:29he'd take care of it.
00:22:30But he could be getting a little bit frustrated
00:22:35right now, too.
00:22:36Come on, man.
00:22:37Move it.
00:22:38Come on.
00:22:40Come on.
00:22:46Crowd erupts for the little Savarese left hook.
00:22:49No punches.
00:22:49No punches.
00:22:50Let's go.
00:22:51Step back.
00:22:51Come on.
00:22:51Let's go.
00:22:52Let's go.
00:22:52Let's go.
00:22:52Let's go.
00:22:52Let's go.
00:22:52Let's go.
00:22:53Let's go.
00:22:53Let's go.
00:22:53Let's go.
00:22:53Grant working a little harder now
00:22:57to use his jab
00:22:59and keep Savarese away from him with it.
00:23:04Right hand body shot by Grant.
00:23:07Savarese wobbles again.
00:23:09Savarese has been doing too much commenting
00:23:11during the fight.
00:23:13He's awful with the referee.
00:23:14He's awful that he's worried about fighting.
00:23:20And he's giving Grant a chance to pile up points
00:23:22in the early rounds.
00:23:23Let's go.
00:23:24Come on, both of you guys.
00:23:26Right hand left hook.
00:23:28Without putting the kind of pressure on Grant,
00:23:31and he was anxious to provide.
00:23:33I'm sure the blood above the left eye
00:23:36has something to do with that, too,
00:23:37because that cut is just above the eye
00:23:40in a bad position.
00:23:45Right hand over the top.
00:23:46Come on.
00:23:47Let's go, fellas.
00:23:48I think both guys are smothering their punches right now.
00:23:51Let's go.
00:23:51Back up.
00:23:52Let's go.
00:23:52Let's go.
00:23:52Let's go.
00:23:53Let's go.
00:23:53Let's go.
00:23:53Let's go.
00:23:53Let's go.
00:23:54Let's go.
00:23:54Let's go.
00:23:55Let's go.
00:23:55Let's go.
00:23:56Let's go.
00:23:57Let's go.
00:23:58Let's go.
00:23:59Let's go.
00:24:00Let's go.
00:24:01Let's go.
00:24:02Well, if that goes on for 12 rounds,
00:24:08boy, it's clearly advantage Grant,
00:24:10because at least up to this point,
00:24:12he's throwing more and landing more.
00:24:14Yes.
00:24:15Let me correct myself.
00:24:1710 rounds, not 12.
00:24:20Fight is scheduled for 10.
00:24:21Just as was the opener
00:24:24between Maurice Harris and Jeremy Williams.
00:24:28Five seconds for four.
00:24:30Three seconds, guys.
00:24:31Four down, six to go.
00:24:35Michael Grant, Lou Samarice on boxing out the door.
00:24:47How do you feel, champ, huh?
00:24:49Let's get a little bit.
00:24:50We got to get a little bit, huh?
00:24:51Yeah.
00:24:51Lou, busier with your hands.
00:24:55You guys get a little bit, this round five.
00:24:58And start getting leverage.
00:25:00Just start stepping to the right and firing that right hand,
00:25:03and they'll throw your hook off your right hand.
00:25:05Okay.
00:25:05Let's go.
00:25:06Give me some water.
00:25:07Give me some water.
00:25:08Get water in there.
00:25:09A little Vaseline.
00:25:11A little Vaseline.
00:25:12Come on, man.
00:25:12Get mean.
00:25:13Okay, buddy.
00:25:14Come on.
00:25:15Do your job.
00:25:16Lou Samarice is averaging 45 punches a round, but coming into tonight, opponents had been landing at a more than 40% rate customarily against Michael Grant.
00:25:32Savarice is only landing at a 20% rate.
00:25:48Number one, he ain't punching enough.
00:25:51As Jesse Reed told him again between rounds.
00:25:55He just hasn't thrown enough punches.
00:25:57He needs to throw more punches.
00:25:58If he wants to try to win the fight.
00:26:05This is beginning to look like two power forwards in basketball wrestling under the basket.
00:26:11For position.
00:26:12You're right.
00:26:13It almost seems as though neither guy has a big enough push to hurt the other guy yet.
00:26:17How badly do you think Savarese is being inhibited by that cut over the eye?
00:26:29I don't think that has much to do with it because he still can throw more punches although he's cut.
00:26:34The cut is not draining him so much that it should affect his punch output.
00:26:45He's just not being busy enough.
00:26:47Inside or outside.
00:26:51Is that because of Grant's power and the price he paid for trying to get off against him?
00:26:55No.
00:26:56That was a good line of cut by Grant.
00:27:04We all know that Grant is not a one punch power puncher anyway.
00:27:07Keep him up.
00:27:14Keep him up.
00:27:15Come on.
00:27:16Now punch us.
00:27:16No.
00:27:17Come on.
00:27:17Let's go.
00:27:18Let's go.
00:27:19Come on.
00:27:19Let's go.
00:27:20Come on, Michael.
00:27:24Watch the heads.
00:27:25Watch the heads.
00:27:27Let go.
00:27:28Let go.
00:27:28Let go.
00:27:29Let's punch.
00:27:30Let's punch.
00:27:30Well, Roy, you said at the beginning of the fight that there is a mandate for Grant to provide excitement.
00:27:40This is not exciting.
00:27:42No, it's not.
00:27:43Well, in part, we have to give some credit and discredit to that.
00:27:47To Savarese, he's fighting a very close fight.
00:27:52He's not opening up.
00:27:54He doesn't even appear to be trying to win the fight.
00:27:58Makes it more difficult for Grant.
00:28:00Grant is not looking good trying to open him up either.
00:28:04Jimmy Sainte is telling Grant that this is his last warning before a point will be deducted for low blows.
00:28:11Savarese landed a hard counter right hand in there.
00:28:13That's one of his best punches in a while.
00:28:15Those two punches that Grant just threw were at the distance that he should be fighting it.
00:28:22That left and right combination.
00:28:26They trade shots at close range.
00:28:28Five seconds.
00:28:33Halfway through the bout.
00:28:36Two big heavyweights banging away.
00:28:40You know they're trying to take this fight, man.
00:28:43You got to get the guy out of here.
00:28:45You can do it.
00:28:46You had him out and you backed up.
00:28:48When you hit this guy, bang on him, man.
00:28:50How do you feel?
00:28:51All right, just a minute.
00:28:59You hit me fucking low blow.
00:29:01Yeah, I knew it.
00:29:02I got to die.
00:29:05You can't keep leaning in, Lou.
00:29:06You can't lean in, baby.
00:29:08You can't keep leaning in by hitting that up.
00:29:09Lou, quit leaning in.
00:29:11And start circling this guy when you come out.
00:29:13Stay close.
00:29:14Stay close.
00:29:15With Savarese protecting the left side of his head from Grant's right, he comes up through the middle.
00:29:23Perhaps his best punch of the fight.
00:29:25Grant told us yesterday that he doesn't have the mentality to go out and crush his opponent.
00:29:34You better get that mentality quickly.
00:29:36Well, you heard Don Turner telling Grant that he thought he was close to knocking Savarese out if he would keep going forward instead of backing up.
00:29:48Harold Lutterman, how do you have it halfway through?
00:29:50You know, Jim, I don't love the way he fights Michael Grant, but I think he's winning the fight.
00:29:5450 to 45, five rounds to nothing, Michael Grant.
00:29:57You know, Jim, if anybody is landing clean punches in this fight, it's Michael Grant.
00:30:02He lands a couple of good left jams.
00:30:03He lands a right hand.
00:30:04They're throwing up a cut.
00:30:05And then he grabs.
00:30:06He holds.
00:30:06He grabs.
00:30:07He's plugs.
00:30:07It's just like that.
00:30:08A couple of little chats and Grant.
00:30:10Unfortunately, the punches he's landing.
00:30:13He's winning the fight because Savarese's not punching back.
00:30:15I have it four rounds to one.
00:30:32Well, as the fight goes on, we may hear some blue, blue, blue.
00:30:38And we may hear some boo, boo, boo.
00:30:41And it's going to be hard to tell him apart.
00:30:42No, no.
00:30:44Break no punch.
00:30:45Don't move right here.
00:30:46Watch that head.
00:30:47Watch that head.
00:30:57Come on.
00:30:57Get it.
00:30:58Get it.
00:30:59Get it.
00:31:00Go.
00:31:00I think he's up to Savary to make something happen here.
00:31:21Savary still has a sense of humor anyway.
00:31:23He waved at us over Grant's shoulder there.
00:31:25Let go.
00:31:26A friendly hello.
00:31:28Midway through round six.
00:31:30This is for Savary's.
00:31:40No punches.
00:31:43Don't hold them, Mike.
00:31:43This is what we need to see.
00:31:53More punches thrown by both fighters.
00:31:55No.
00:31:56No.
00:31:57No.
00:31:57No punch.
00:32:02No punch.
00:32:02Not going on, Mike.
00:32:03No punch.
00:32:04Coach.
00:32:04No punch.
00:32:05No punch, see it back.
00:32:05Would you like to watch?
00:32:06Make someうん exempla.
00:32:07Todos.
00:32:08Don't go.
00:32:08One punch.
00:32:09Oh, Mike.
00:32:09Ten points.
00:32:09Greg.
00:32:15Keep him up, keep him up.
00:32:19Здесь, Heath.
00:32:23Let go Michael, let go, let go.
00:32:27Five seconds.
00:32:29Watch the hold, ok?
00:32:31Okay, three seconds, two seconds, ready?
00:32:33Time!
00:32:46And between rounds here, close friends of Mary Iaconelli,
00:32:51a model with KO Models, will be proud to see their good buddy Mary
00:32:55here on Boxing After Dark.
00:32:57In addition to being a round card girl, she often sings the national anthem
00:33:01at major sports events here in the New York area.
00:33:04Her ambition is to have a number one hit record.
00:33:08Mary, call Jennifer Lopez and ask her how to turn that trick.
00:33:15Got to fight now, we got to fight the rest of the way.
00:33:18You hear me?
00:33:19We got to fight the rest of the way.
00:33:21I know it, but I'm telling you, you got to fight a little bit more.
00:33:24Don't look good inside, because you're enjoying it.
00:33:27Checkers out, keep on going.
00:33:27Go to work, man.
00:33:28Push them off, please.
00:33:29Both corners urging their Warriors on.
00:33:36Both not content with the way the fight is going.
00:33:40Both looking for more aggression, right?
00:33:45Most definitely.
00:33:46Let go, Michael.
00:33:47Let go.
00:33:47Let's go.
00:33:50Grant still pitching a shutout on the level of the scorecard.
00:33:53Look out, Michael.
00:33:54Break!
00:33:54No punches.
00:33:55Let's go, fellas.
00:33:56Step back.
00:33:57And he's to the head.
00:34:04Come on.
00:34:04Come on.
00:34:05Let's go.
00:34:05Come on.
00:34:06Work!
00:34:10Come on, guys.
00:34:11Come on.
00:34:12No punches.
00:34:13Frank!
00:34:14No hold.
00:34:14Let's go.
00:34:15Let's go.
00:34:15Let's go.
00:34:16Let's go.
00:34:16So far, and as Larry pointed out, this has a lot to do with style.
00:34:21Well, it is, unfortunately, not the kind of showing, it's going to prompt people to want
00:34:27to buy the pay-per-view hookup tomorrow to see the winner fight Lennox Lewis.
00:34:30But the chance exists that that's what lies in store, particularly if it's Grant, who walks
00:34:38away with the honors.
00:34:40Right?
00:34:40No punches.
00:34:41No punches.
00:34:42No punches.
00:34:43No.
00:34:44No.
00:34:44No.
00:34:45No.
00:34:45No.
00:34:46No.
00:34:46No.
00:34:47No.
00:34:47No.
00:34:48No.
00:34:48No.
00:34:49No.
00:34:49No.
00:34:50No.
00:34:56No.
00:34:57No.
00:34:57No.
00:34:58No.
00:34:58No.
00:34:59No.
00:34:59No.
00:34:59No.
00:35:02No.
00:35:02No.
00:35:07E Θ因ance, one of the calmest people we know, seldom changes his expression.
00:35:11Stay there.
00:35:11No.
00:35:11No.

00:35:13No.
00:35:14No.
00:35:15No.
00:35:16to get a glove retake this is a sort of the time in the fight when i remind everybody about
00:35:30mike tyson's in different fights when he was going up to the championship and fighters like jose
00:35:36ribalta and mitch green and james quick tillis and bone crusher smith you know these are all
00:35:45that's what happens with big men sometimes yep it makes for every fight sometimes tony tucker
00:35:51tonight we have two big men in here both who like to fight inside
00:36:00and the average fan tends to think big man means big combustion
00:36:04punches often it means big clinches big hugs big weights for more action yeah well i said earlier
00:36:13this would be a shootout at the ko corral it looks more like a like a slap out at the uh
00:36:21at the ud corral in animal's decision
00:36:24that's a decision correct come on let's go santa still hasn't taken a point from anybody but he's
00:36:33warned both fighters repeatedly for the repeated low blows well nobody's really been hurt by those
00:36:38blows i mean and it's hard to even know where the low blows start and stop look at both of their
00:36:44protective cups are riding up toward their chest now i think in fact santa has been doing
00:36:50a pretty good job with a thankless task here trying to make this fight look better than it is
00:36:56it's like he's helping me every time
00:37:03it's like he's helping me every time huh he's helping me every time i want to start something
00:37:20when he locked me up forget him you know how listen listen all you gotta do forget about him and step
00:37:26out when he grabs you step out quick the quick step is what i'm talking about man to the side
00:37:33fight now we just got to fight you want this baby dick for dick for come on we behind
00:37:40no we're behind we told you coming in michael grant you see better big target big strike zone and you
00:37:45can see that the last four opponents or the last three opponents anyway izan sullivan and abdeen
00:37:50all landed at a very high connect percentage rate against uh against michael grant but lou savris is
00:37:55landing at a considerably lower rate 32 averaging only nine of 28 per round does that mean that
00:38:02grant's defense is getting better or is it simply that savris hasn't been able to find openings hard to say
00:38:08you certainly suspected if ahmad abdeen could do it that mu savris would be able to
00:38:29no two good punches
00:38:30watch the heads
00:38:35that's it and again thrown from the range where he should be fighting that's right let go michael let go
00:38:40michael
00:39:00round eight of a schedule 10 so far it's michael grant grinding out an apparent decision win
00:39:06or headed toward a bit of an apparent decision win as he grinds away against lou savris
00:39:14the savris weary again but still throwing back
00:39:20the
00:39:25uh
00:39:36watch out here now wishing they could see maurice harris in the main event
00:39:44watch this okay watch that let's go
00:39:50good combination by grant
00:39:55when he feels room between him and savris you feel he's much better punch
00:39:58he's up
00:39:59he punches up
00:40:01hard right hand by grant and the left
00:40:04savary's holding his punches up but now savary's wobbling
00:40:10how well can michael grant finish close to a minute left
00:40:14and savary takes a knee as he did against lance winnaker a few months ago
00:40:22time now fix it right time fix it right let's go and again the glove is untaped
00:40:27and a chance for savary's to recover a bit yeah there's a good chance to recover but you see what
00:40:32happens when grant gets the room to throw the punches the punches come much better
00:40:36third time in savary's his career he's been knocked down they didn't call it a knockdown
00:40:42didn't call it a knockdown no he took a knee right
00:40:46not as you know they didn't really took a knee they knew that somehow he he was pushed down
00:40:53and it was discounted as a knockdown
00:40:58interesting ruling i thought he had taken a knee to uh ward off for the punishment well
00:41:02i think he took a knee cream to file
00:41:17savary's reaching to try to land the handmaker right
00:41:21over the top of grant's head one big round for michael grant
00:41:25good job okay good job and savary's going for a moment before the delay to retake his glove
00:41:36now we need these last two how you feeling keep giving me that jab
00:41:43step into your right and that 45. you know what i'm saying coming back with the right hand
00:41:49huh what'd you say i'll control it okay i got it looking i got it all right okay hold your mouth
00:41:57let me put the water in all right come up lou you can out gutty out gutty you hear me look at me
00:42:05look at me this is for your life done this is what you're early in the round right hand by grant
00:42:11turn the time in the round right there savary's fought back but he never got back
00:42:22one of the things i see about grant here roy and tell me if i'm wrong is that he seems to be a basic
00:42:28one-two punchy word punch very rarely comes right the third point doesn't hardly come right but he
00:42:35throws pretty good underneath the shots too he just doesn't really put them together like one two then
00:42:39the three four and five he throws either the upper cuts or he throws the one two that that'll come
00:42:44from experience i think harold how do you have it through eight eight to nothing 80 to 72 michael
00:42:51grant jim about the knockdown listen you can always tell when it's a knockdown because they have a
00:42:56mandatory eight count in other words had referee jim santa called it a knockdown he would have had
00:43:01had to count to eight before they resumed fighting since he didn't count to eight you knew he ruled
00:43:06they'll knock that he ruled michael grant pushed him down not knocked him down
00:43:14and what did you think of that ruling harold well it was a very questionable call i mean you know
00:43:20they're wrestling so much they're tying each other up so much it might have been a push down to me
00:43:24i thought the loose ivories took a knee maybe you could have called it a knockdown that's where i was harold
00:43:29jesse reid argued with his fighter lou savries between rounds that it's now or never fighting for
00:43:42his boxing life as he said easier said than done against a guy who's six seven and 256 pounds
00:43:50against whom opponents tend to get very tired and once again the wrap on savarese's glove has come loose
00:44:03so he can look for a rest anywhere anytime here soon
00:44:11okay left inside by savarese grant took that very well
00:44:16great backing savarese up with body shots one low
00:44:30great
00:44:42grant's doing some good body work on the inside here
00:44:45i think that's his biggest strength boy i think so too he keeps working to the body
00:44:50he's doing a very good body shot from the inside
00:44:52that's one thing that lennox lewis doesn't do correct about it he doesn't he ties people up on the
00:45:05inside and and uh he really doesn't do a lot of business in there
00:45:14you
00:45:26with another big rally to end the night
00:45:30savarese looks like he just wants to survive let's take a look again at that incident in bt
00:45:36should this have been knocked down was savarese asking for a foul how exactly did he get down to one
00:45:42knee take a look all right okay hey guys just looked like he went down from exhaustion i don't
00:45:52know if he had any plan at all he just last round it was a slight push on the top here watch you see
00:45:58right right in here they're wrestling it doesn't look like a knockdown it looks just like an
00:46:03exhaustive guy right yeah but to me if the guy's been getting hit and he goes to one knee i count
00:46:08eight yeah i have no problem with that either rhythm and let those punches go look at me look at me no
00:46:16clinching let's go go to work you know while we've been chattering away here we've been in the
00:46:24chattering class lou sam reese has really taken a beating in this fight he sure has you know
00:46:31it may not be sensational it may not be dramatic we might have won a scene a little bit
00:46:37uh more from michael grant but he has delivered a terrible beating the savaries in this fight
00:46:45savaries is bleeding from the mouth he's got two separate cuts above the left eye he's been pounded
00:46:50to the body he eats a big right cross there and grant may indeed have the stuff to provide a 10th round
00:46:58ko here savary's not coming back with much let's go
00:47:06i'll tell you what if i'm jim santa i'm watching this very carefully
00:47:10looking it looked like savary she was looking for a place to fall five six seven eight okay you're
00:47:19all right louis you're right you're all right you're all right you're all right
00:47:23and this is how michael fair usually does he wears his opponent down did he finish with an
00:47:34accumulation of punches he beats them up to the body until they have nothing left
00:47:38why is it the referee breaking them up right in here tell me why is he breaking them up
00:47:47you're all right okay great great no punches no punches you all right louis let's go come on yeah
00:47:53all right yeah sure it looks great
00:47:58his bank account may be all right he's not all right all right by boxing
00:48:04all right all right by 10th round of a heavyweight fight at madison square garden standards you know
00:48:09it's a different thing no come on both guys come on last round let's go
00:48:18and i think what grant has done over the second half of the fight roy he's not unimpressive
00:48:49good body set
00:48:53santa should protect savary's three four five six seven is it really worth anything
00:49:04if there is not the picture of a defeated man
00:49:09what is
00:49:12you only hope that savary's doesn't take a life-changing shot in these last 10 seconds
00:49:18it would easily have been stopped somewhere in the test
00:49:30instead lou savary's last set up gets a warm hug from grant for his trouble
00:49:35but an easy win for the still undefeated michael grant
00:49:44scorecards should produce something close to a shutout
00:49:47i think harold butterman's card is going to be a shutout
00:49:58i gave savary's a round second round but this is new york this is where he's from
00:50:06won two golden gloves titles titles here he might have won another one he's got one even huh
00:50:12the photographers were in my way
00:50:23in round 10 michael grant landed a brutal 56 out of 93 punches including 41 of 64 power shots that's
00:50:36the kind of punishment savary's had to absorb just for the token honor of finishing the fight
00:50:46and here's the first punch that hurt lou savary's prior to the first
00:50:50official knockdown see the distance between them there yep anytime michael grant can get that
00:50:55distance right there he can hurt you that's the only that's when he's the most dangerous fighter when
00:51:01he has the distance to throw the big punches now here's the first time that savary's went to the
00:51:04canvas through the ropes a la dempsey against furpo and then the second time he likewise
00:51:14found the canvas while being pounded and all of that was just an accumulation i think yep
00:51:18exhaustion the body shots yep you know having to fight with the cut eye uh and and the fact that
00:51:25grant just sort of keeps coming and swarms you like a mountain on the move and he's so big and
00:51:32now let's go to michael buffer for the official particulars ladies and gentlemen we go to the budweiser
00:51:37scorecards joe dwyer scores at 97 to 91. steve weisfeld has it 98 to 90 and melvina lathan scores at
00:51:4698 to 90 for the winner by unanimous decision still undefeated michael grant
00:52:05so it it is the anticipated unanimous decision for grant
00:52:16and jim santa holds grant's arm up next to trainer don turner final punch stat numbers overwhelmingly in
00:52:23favor of grant even more one-sided than the punch stat numbers for the first fight tonight
00:52:28in which maurice harris outclassed jeremy williams as you can see here grant landing 175 more throwing
00:52:34180 more doubling savarese and connect percentage maybe the most impressive performance by michael grant
00:52:42in the last two years power punch stats equally one-sided in grant's favor and he connects on 55
00:52:49of them and larry merchant stands by in the ring with the winner all right thank you very much jim
00:52:54congratulations michael why was this such a tough rugged fight first give it honor to god
00:53:02and my lord and savior jesus christ uh it was a tough fight i mean everything has an act to it
00:53:07and that was my act for this evening um i didn't come out you know like a hurricane and get through
00:53:15things quick but i took my time got the rounds in and uh you know proved i can put them out uh which
00:53:21i mean he went the distance but i knew i could i just didn't turn it up i didn't turn the oven up well
00:53:26you said you don't come firing out of your corner trying to crush your opponent is this is this
00:53:33something you have to work on or are you satisfied with this kind of performance because i got don
00:53:37turner you know and bob miles next to me to know how to protect myself and throw that counter off that
00:53:43counter you know calendar calendar calendar keep going i mean i can i can take anybody it ain't the
00:53:50point of me taking a point can they take mine i thought i took theirs that's the point most heavyweights
00:53:56hard is the size of muster seed so you got to dig it out of them all right let's go to the perception
00:54:03of this fight you you have been anointed by others as a potential star in the heavyweight division
00:54:10everybody is here looking for a star performance uh most people don't think it was that even though
00:54:17you dominated your opponent do you think you have to do more to convince the public that you're the
00:54:24next heavyweight like i said i never close a window close the door i'm gonna keep on learning this game
00:54:29i'm only i've been in this game six years and most guys to get to this level i'm at probably been in
00:54:3410 12 and i'm blessed larry so i know i got some more training to do and years of training at that
00:54:41i'm gonna keep learning until this game is over with but pretty much i'm satisfied with my victory and i
00:54:46give thanks to my father but hey all is good you're looking good i'm still looking good we all
00:54:52looking good and we live to another day all right thank you very much michael grant uh just a final
00:54:58word we said earlier that we would uh put michael grant under the microscope uh everybody is every
00:55:06time he goes out there he is going to be under the microscope we didn't see any harmful bacteria out
00:55:12there but on the other hand we didn't see a cure for the common cold or for what ails the heavyweight
00:55:18division either he will fight another day jim all right nobody looks better than roy jones incidentally
00:55:26we had promised you a final word from lennox lewis i guess lennox didn't expect to be here at one
00:55:29o'clock in the morning come on lennox it's boxing after dark at any rate he vacated so i get to ask you
00:55:35uh he he would you know let's say hypothetically maybe lewis holyfield doesn't happen he's he's the
00:55:42only guy on the planet who would be two inches taller than lennox and would outweigh him by several
00:55:47pounds is he ready for that matchup well i don't know jim is it's going to be hard to say because
00:55:51styles make fights uh michael grant like he said he even admits that he needs more experience he has
00:55:57to learn more he's only been in this game for six years therefore his distance has to get better
00:56:02before he really is a legitimate challenge to a lennox lewis i think however when lennox is inactivity
00:56:09sometimes that can make for a good fight you never know so it all depends on which lennox lewis comes
00:56:15to the table but michael grant busted up a pretty good professional fighter tonight yeah he busted up
00:56:20a pretty good professional fighter but he didn't have to look for that professional fighter lennox lewis
00:56:24is not going to sit right there for him he's going to have to look for lennox lewis lennox has more
00:56:28experience lennox knows how to use his tools his advantages he knows how to take advantage
00:56:33so it would be much difficult much more difficult to deal with the lennox lewis than it is to deal
00:56:38with the loose every reason the biggest thing is that's not there in the loose every is is a big
00:56:42punch all right well said and from the number one fighter in the world so we'll have a final word
00:56:48on what happened here in the ring in this heavyweight double header in just a couple minutes right now
00:56:52let's look ahead to a program that starts monday on hbo
00:57:06i want to make you show my cover to my heart and i respect for you

00:58:35took the fight on four days notice this past tuesday and scored a stunning upset over jeremy
00:58:41williams only the third loss of williams career but a thunderous unanimous decision for harris and then
00:58:48michael grant wore out lou savarese through 10 brutal rounds of body punishment and upstairs power
00:58:57grant scoring an easy unanimous decision over savarese who fought to survive coming up
