00:14national insurance team oh look at that he's remembering it nice man come on don't know if i
00:20don't know if i have we've got not one but two rannies i just thought it's doctor who it's the
00:29rani it's anita dobson i had three words in my head yes yes yes we've got ducks an owl and a horse
00:39with a weak bladder
00:41and spoiler alert we've got an exclusive clip from the series finale welcome to john smith unleashed
00:59this is it then the beginning of the end of season two of doctor who
01:06and we're here to lift the lid on episode seven wish world the first of a two-part finale
01:16brimming with elaborate sets multiple locations an ensemble cast and mind-bending vfx
01:23are you ready to take the plunge
01:27welcome to wish world a parallel universe conjured by the imagination of conspiracy theorist
01:37conrad clark last seen being sprung from jail by mrs flood at the end of the episode lucky day
01:44who are you oh i'm the governor
01:47and it's your lucky day
01:51but what exactly is this dystopian alternate reality it's a partly remembered and a partly
01:58invented world it's all from conrad's mind happy morning everyone he's desperately inventing a whole
02:05world so he's imagined very simple templates it's just if he's put everyone into couples and you're
02:12john smith's wife i certainly am and women who don't quite fit into those couples don't quite
02:16fit into the world they have no role they're alone they're considered to be a bit strange
02:20but he thinks it's natural he thinks it's normal he's not from that good a home himself
02:25so he's trying to imagine a better home morning darling morning sweetheart
02:30john smith and belinda they're married and they have a child together but having been busy mates with
02:36belinda for the past six episodes it was a weird transition but um fun me and v thought it was
02:45very funny i thought we were waking up in bed beside each other did you see a cat
02:51yeah is that you wanting a cat yeah yeah it's like playing house with your best friend
02:57seeing shooty be like a dad figure was very different to how i know shooty to be in real
03:04life like neither of us are grown up in any way in real life we're like kids so it's just very funny
03:11to see us both kind of switch into like parent mode is it okay out there is it working it's all
03:18hanging on by a thread it's not real and it's desperately rattling at the edges and that is
03:24the point as you discover at the end of the episode that's actually the rani wanting to
03:29create a reality that wears thin that starts to fall apart but that's her plan to break the world
03:35apart and to reach the world underneath
03:37so let's take you even further behind the scenes of wish world a world in which the doctor is now
03:45plain old john smith
03:47today is the 11th of april 2024 and what's being filmed just behind me is the scene where john smith
03:57walks in to work cutting it fine another two minutes and you'd have been late i did work late
04:04last night time carries no favors i enjoyed watching you being john smith dear john dear john
04:13yeah i enjoyed watching you strolling into that room in your very sharp suit and encompassing a
04:19different part of the character i thought it was really fun did you enjoy that yeah i did because
04:22it was just so different and he's just so normal and so human and has got no intention of saving the
04:28universe he just wants to work at the unified national insurance team oh look at that he's
04:36remembering it nice man come on don't know spot the professional i don't know if i have
04:42happy morning unified national insurance team how can i help it was a lot to get my head around
04:50because you get so used to the character of the doctor he just walks into rooms and decides to take
04:56charge yeah and john is so the antithesis of that that it was a nice challenge yeah yeah would you
05:03be good nine to five no in an office no i wouldn't be good but i do enjoy it though when i i loved when
05:09i was temping yeah yeah i found having an excel spreadsheet in front of me the most exciting thing
05:17you an excel guy you spreadsheet spreadsheets man shooting i i worked in many a receptionist office
05:23and yeah i loved it it was just so much fun nothing ever got entered into it no productivity
05:30was low but productivity was very low you were having a great time but i was happy to be there
05:34yeah yeah you could see that channeled in your john smith
05:37the old cliche says never work with children or animals so what did russell write into the opening
05:48scene of this episode a baby and animals lots of animals we had a day with ducks and we had an owl
05:59we're about to have a right and we had a horse
06:11well apart from the horse mixtureating in the middle of the take it was fantastic
06:16i happily write six ducks knowing i won't be there on that day
06:21knowing it's gonna be chaos and a nightmare there was probably a duck wrangler was there a duck wrangler
06:25there was a duck wrangler i knew it one two three
06:34i wonder if is there any way to spread them out i'll try
06:40it went fine it worked absolutely fine never want to film with ducks again
06:45okay thank you and if you thought that was quackers hello boys added to the mix were six young children
06:54the aforementioned baby and it's stunt double come on in back to your winnie bagger
06:59but what nobody ever tells you is there are worse things to work with than animals and children
07:05they're about 500 million midges all the midges in wales have come here and they're around my head
07:18and it's really really annoying bugs are eating us alive
07:22join the dots i'm just itching they love our curls they love our curls unfortunately bearing so yeah
07:29they're sticking to us shake around a bit you see loads come off yeah i'm in disguise hiding from the midges
07:39you should see ralph actually because he's got bites all over his face oh my god you've got so
07:43many bites on your face brilliant oh my goodness hello i don't think so yeah i've got one on my nose
07:49uh not quite entertaining as i thought it'd be um this isn't what i signed up for these little flies
08:01are from the pits of hell
08:06let battle begin
08:11right then in the last episode of unleashed we promised there'd be more on the
08:16bombshell reveal that mrs flood was one half of a bi-generated four not seen on our screens in
08:22decades our name is the rani although she's become a rani while i'm the rani this is the arrival of
08:34archie panjabi as the rani the rani in the old days was played by a fantastic actor called kate amara
08:40seal it and label it really phenomenal actors this is dedicated to her in a way because she
08:46was wonderful and created a villain all those years ago that has lasted in doctor who legacy
08:51ever since you know she's a great part of the show it's amazing that the rani hasn't been on screen
08:55for a million years well well well
09:00the rani you were expecting to see the master first appearing in the mark of the rani back in 1985
09:07opposite colin baker's sixth doctor i think i've got it you're extracting a chemical from the brain
09:13the renegade time lady returned in 1987's the time and the rani in seventh doctor sylvester mccoy's
09:20debut episode the rani stay back since then the character has appeared in audio dramas novels and
09:28comics but aside from a brief appearance in 1993 not on tv so why now that was a villain that i really
09:36wanted to face and i'd asked russell oh i do you asked him yes she's so like fabulous yeah i want
09:43to i want to face off of her time lord v time lord like how cool oh yes doctor i've always liked
09:51the rani and i've always thought i'd bring her back somehow but that was like a request when you get
09:55when your lead actor requests something i'm here to obey you stepping into the iconic red suit and
10:02black boots this time around is emmy award-winning actor and star of the good wife shetland and bend
10:09it like beckham archie punjabi so how did it happen then actually how are you sat here as a very famous
10:15doctor who character back reincarnated as the rani i was just sitting at my desk one day and then i got
10:22a message saying would you like to be in doctor who and i thought oh that could be interesting what's the
10:27character yeah and they said the rani and i thought wow oh wow and the rani obviously means
10:34queen and all i could think about honestly the first reaction was my entire indian community would
10:39be so over the moon because the rani is queen and i'm married to raj yeah king so i thought that would
10:45be lovely and i just thought it stopped who it's the rani it's anita dobson i had three words in my
10:52head yes yes yes and what's it been has it sort of lived up to that your expectation has it i mean look
10:59at this this is my palace our palace yes ma'am yeah archie punjabi is amazing i mean the charisma
11:13and the the presence that she holds in the room and she's so so lovely she's so cool
11:19nice of you to join us doctor like when i was younger there weren't a lot of south asian actors
11:26on screen and she was one of them and i always looked up to her i thought she was stunning and
11:32sassy and smart the rani's relationship with mrs flood is quite funny because they're
11:39both the rani and she considers herself a lot more superior to mrs flood and
11:44treats her very badly it's it's very it's not very nice sound which obviously but it does also
11:50make you laugh oh right because they're both so funny when they're together you still go everywhere
11:56together now is this a new thing yeah it's sort of happening isn't it we feel like we've known each
12:00other for ever ever it's very strange yeah so because this afternoon you're filming the bit we move
12:08the same did you see that yeah we even say things at the same time yeah finish each other's sentences
12:16i was so excited i couldn't wait to meet her and then i suddenly panicked and thought
12:19what if we don't click what if there's no magic and then she walked onto the set and it was like
12:25there it was yeah it could be said that you sprang from my loins
12:30that's the most disgusting thing i've ever heard
12:40every doctor who set has its challenges be it a retro unit set a peasant cabin in the bavarian woods
12:48or a palace made of bones although none of those were the most challenging in this episode
12:54that accolade goes to this set we are in uh central cardiff and we have created the camp of the
13:01dispossessed which is an area where everyone with a disability he kind of has sort of forgotten about
13:07and they get sort of placed in this place so obviously because of the storyline all our sporting
13:11artists they're all people with with visible and no visibility so we another reason why we selected
13:16this location is obviously because it's fully accessible and workable for people with all their
13:21different specific needs and requirements so it's been a really interesting challenge but trying
13:25to make a location that's sort of that's not just serviceable for a standard film group also for
13:30people who've got slightly more specific needs and requirements morning winnie love another day in
13:34paradise so i am what they call an access coordinator so it's my responsibility to work with the production
13:42as a whole to make sure any cast or crew or production team member who's deaf disabled or neurodivergent
13:49work with them and put any access requirements in place and that could be anything from a ramp to
13:55the front door to a quiet room in the production office it's all about making the entire process
14:02accessible to people who are disabled i am crowd aiding and also essaying because i'm a crew member with
14:11disability so uh they asked me to help out with all the essays as well as acting as well they clearly
14:18heard the words camp and disabled and thought let's call ben you know having access coordinator on set
14:25makes everything so much easier all of those little things other people might not notice the people
14:32who it's meant for will and i think that's really special so it was about okay um let's have different
14:39colored tennis because if you were visually impaired or you were blind or nearly blind but you could
14:44see a bit of color if you had all the tents in one color and as a blind person or visually impaired
14:49person you'd knock into these so you'll see there's different tents in different colors and then
14:54there's ribbons round about we looked at the access how to get into the tent how to get out because
15:01tents i don't know if you noticed but they have a lip at the bottom so if you were in a wheelchair
15:06you couldn't get into it so it's all about making the whole thing accessible
15:12you know what it looks really beautiful but i could spend a weekend here
15:15how nice everyone just having a nice little jolly it feels really colorful and vibrant and uh to see
15:22so many disabled people just living like that thinking oh actually that could be real
15:27it's quite moving in a way how happy everybody is as well yeah what a great place to film just tell
15:36me what the hell is going on when you're disabled you know that you know with just a few access
15:41requirements put in place it makes such a big difference it means you can turn up and you can be
15:46creatively brilliant so when we make our film and tv industry accessible we open ourselves up to
15:54lots of very talented people
16:00still to come on doctor who unleashed we got dancing with the stars
16:05what's what you even dancing now should you come here you're gonna tell you they'll have me on
16:09strictly now
16:12production designer phil sims reveals the inspiration behind the awesome bone palace
16:17there's a lot of bird references in it a lot of avian references okay that's interesting why
16:21why did you go bird we just thought they looked cool we just thought that and spoiler alert
16:27we've got an exclusive clip from the season finale but first
16:36so every week on doctor who unleashed i do some work experience with a different department that make
16:41doctor who happen and this week i'm with the script team and with molly on the script team and i think
16:47their job is actually one of the most stressful on set why let's go find out
16:52okay molly let's start right to the basics hello hello yeah my manners yes thank you very much
17:04tell me about the script team what do they do what do you do what's your job title my job title is a
17:09little bit of a mouthful okay that's a good start yes i am the trainee assistant script supervisor
17:14trainee assistant script supervisor i am indeed yeah it's a bit of a mouthful it is a little bit
17:18what do they do they assist the script supervisors molly assists script supervisor richard pasque
17:26between them they have some serious responsibilities it's their job to keep detailed notes of dialogue
17:32action continuity and all the slate and c numbers on top of all that during filming they have to closely
17:40monitor what's happening to check no dialogue is missed and that the movements and the eye lines of all
17:46the actors match take after take after take and what's with the stopwatch we help our production
17:53with timings of the day when we start when we finish when we call for lunch uh how much of the
17:58episodes that we've shot already like 15 minutes in 20 minutes in whether we're over running so before
18:04we start shooting we have to time the script right we come up with a a guess a guesstimate of how long
18:10the episode is going to take and then we try and match that as much as possible occasionally molly has
18:15to deliver some bad news now i've seen some of your colleagues go in with scripts in hand
18:22asking for scenes to be redone so the scripts match the writing is that that's a big part of the job
18:28as well a big part of the job is learning when to go in and when not to so it's a lot of talking with
18:34the director like oh the the line maybe changed a little bit here or should i go in and change it
18:39should you remind the actors what the line is that kind of thing and sometimes it's yes and sometimes
18:44it's uh oh it doesn't matter it's not a big deal yeah so were you always interested in drama growing
18:49up or was it sci-fi that you liked or what was it well sir it was actually a behind the scenes episode
18:55of doctor who that i watched when i was a kid was it that's what i want to do and here you are on
19:00behind the scenes of doctor who it's like a real full circle exactly i bought some books i read them
19:07and when i i was doing lots of running jobs on short films and i just said hey can i either shadow or
19:13sometimes when they don't have a script supervisor like can i give it a go amazing so you've done
19:16that's a real self-starter then molly you like that's the thing i want to go and do did all your
19:20own research and here you are and here i am on doctor who behind the scenes that's so brilliant isn't it
19:24just right time for me to step in as the assistant to the assistant script supervisor
19:33as night falls and rehearsals begin
19:37richard and molly are on hand to liaise with the director and help the actors double check their
19:43lines so if they're getting the lines right you want to make sure they're getting the lines right
19:46here as well as later yeah we don't want panic we don't want nobody wants no no no let's turn over
19:53a and b with the cameras about to roll molly and i will be monitoring the action from a small tent
20:00side of set in between takes i listen to what the director's saying so that i can put down on my notes
20:07if there's anything that he liked or didn't like it's your eavesdropping yes all the time everything you
20:13here the more information you can put down the better set
20:22you recognized your husband's doubt because you've been expressing doubt yourself that's what it does
20:27mrs smith it contaminates it breeds it festers and it's my job to cut it out
20:34oh no don't drop me out don't don't make her ashamed of me
20:43take her away
20:48she missed that line do you want to come let me see if we have time
20:53oh no time to deliver some bad news
21:05back to once we go again straight away
21:09so um not i'm just passing on notes obviously i'm just learning uh so in your line can you please
21:14remember to also say look after her so don't forget that line please thank you very much
21:21a beautiful performance so really moving oh thank you thank you that's not your job
21:25i was just giving you that's actually not our job we're not allowed to do that
21:30should we go back to the tent okay i'm so sorry i'm so sorry just look after her
21:35okay take two
21:40don't make her ashamed of me look after her tell her i love her
21:44she nailed it words wise there though every single word as written
21:50well done
21:52well done the
21:53oh perfect thank you very much very good work you need to be
21:57bringing to life the wish world of conrad's imagination allowed the production design
22:10team to go to town on the sets it also got me all excited when i first saw them
22:16right okay now this is a space that i know of and you know of as the unit headquarters it's the
22:22ultra modern full of jazzy tech place where kate lethbridge stuart jemma redgrave
22:28sort of runs the show but it's been transformed oh wow look how different it looks firstly you
22:34can't see this but this feels different because it's a springy this is a carpet and before it's
22:40all like super slick but look at those this is what people used to type on anymore so obviously
22:46it's been transformed to like mid 20th century vibes jemma for you who spends a lot of the time in
22:53this room it must be an odd sensation being here and seeing it look like this i think it looks
22:58magnificent it doesn't look great doesn't it look like an episode of madmen slightly yeah the
23:03sort of unit twist absolutely i want to know if jones seen these because if i was him i'd be
23:08thrilled and a bit freaked out at the same time it's odd seeing you in a suit though not in your
23:14big body armor i know i mean it looks fresh it does it does look great it's the first first day
23:20actually in this what did you feel like when you walked in here because this is your home when
23:24you're on set filming this is where you spend most of your time it looks totally different
23:28completely different we walked in this morning we just did like a trip triple take like what is
23:32going on yeah it's yeah it's beautiful while the retro unit set evokes 1950s nostalgia the bone palace
23:40is a brilliant sci-fi meets gothic horror mashup i love this this is this is the one set that
23:47we've done where it's been entirely sculpted so we've had a brilliant team of sculptors it's so
23:51clever transforming it into a bony palace there's a lot of bird references in it a lot of avian
23:56references okay that's interesting why why did you go bird we just thought they looked cool we just
24:01thought they looked great there's lots of sort of beaks and bird skulls and actually you know we looked
24:07at ostrich bones ostrich feet yeah and that's kind of where these feet came from at the base of the
24:12pillars in the bone palace that's very clever isn't it yeah get rid of the white i mean it was epic
24:19you know the the attention to detail to the different bones that they used to create the
24:24structure it was just beautiful it was beautiful but also very very creepy it feels like you're in a
24:28dead animal but then there's this massive disco ball that was also there wait did someone say disco ball
24:37can you turn on the disco ball please oh oh my you have the poem in your hands
24:51my hands doesn't look good that is cool is it is that the coolest thing we've done on unleashed
24:55maybe especially during my interviews saturday night femur anyone music towards the end of the
25:04episode john smith and the rani link up for a dance for old time's sake we danced once upon a time you
25:12and i at the seat of the seven it feels like a bit of deja vu for the 15th doctor what are you even
25:19dancing now you're coming you're gonna yeah i'm telling you they'll have me on strictly now
25:28not for the first time shooty had to dust off his dancing shoes and cut some rug
25:36two time lords meeting again yeah in the middle of a waltz as as you do just so camp it was brilliant
25:44yeah oh brilliant yeah brilliant baddie so you've ticked off now you've done um you know 60s dancing
25:51you've now waltzed we've now waltzed so that is actually you're nearly on the whole strictly line
25:55up there you've danced with a strictly judge i know i know just a trend here it's
26:02you're saying it's a trend it's a trend it's a trend it's a trend
26:06choreographer jack murphy who we met in last season's the devil's cord and rogue
26:11is back to make sure shooty and archie's waltz stays in step uh you're here again doing another
26:17dance from doctor who uh what a good enough what a pleasure what a privilege because it's more
26:21intimate than the work you've done on the series i suppose how does that change your work rather
26:26than doing one of the you know those big numbers or the bridgetown style stuff this is really what my
26:32career is based on because primarily i've worked on plays this is taking me home really so i'm very very
26:39it's a bus man's holiday for you it is it is a bus man's holiday do you want to put that away stephan
26:42yes but i'm very happy to ride that bus absolutely jack murphy's such a person he just you know he
26:49understands dance but he also understands performances and so what was really helpful in having me was
26:55doing the dialogue and the dots and he told me he'd still have a little bit of this but i did get to spend
27:01some time yeah that was hard i mean harder for archie archie had that long speech to do was listening
27:11to the music as well at the top of the dance she's because i'm still john smith at this point so he
27:16doesn't really know what he's doing so she was leading in six inch heels while giving a speech whilst
27:21also listening to music it was and she smashed it people said we were lovers can you remember what
27:29archie panjabi is doing at the moment is unbelievably difficult until you've tried it
27:34you wouldn't know yeah i mean if you're at home i'd try dancing and talking at the same time and it's
27:39actually quite hard isn't it oh well yes yeah yes this is why you've been able to have a career jack
27:44because you've got to teach people to do it and have to have a find a way of expressly doing it you
27:48know find the quickest way of doing it yeah because you kind of it's all about repetition and is the idea
27:53that the dance becomes second nature then so that totally yeah so they're not even thinking about it
27:57becomes kinesthetic it's in the muscle memory it's a drama it's not a dance show so i mustn't indulge
28:03in where i would like to do it yeah no less with less swizzling yeah and i have to kind of then go
28:09oh i'm not going to be judged on the fact that actually there's a simplicity to it yeah we should go
28:15in the doctor who season two finale okay let's repeat chapter one is it working we need to move a
28:32little faster sweet little desiderium if only you were older you could imagine such complicated things
28:40instead instead i've got you
28:59so
