00:00in this episode the doctor gets hands-on learning sign language my name is a doctor
00:12normally it takes on average about seven years to become fluent in sign language
00:19thanks to some new high-end kit the stunt team are flying
00:26why am i wearing shorts in a quarry on a freezing february night shoot you know we live in wales right
00:35and spoiler alert we've got an exclusive clip from the next episode welcome to doctor who unleashed
00:45well you come out from behind the sofa yet no me neither but get ready for an exclusive
01:00behind the scenes look at the spine tingling the well and if you don't want spoilers
01:05maybe do this no no no please no stop no don't tell me please i don't need it on ready
01:14in this episode the doctor faces an unseen alien life force on a killing spree but the beating
01:23heart of the well is alice a character we never 100 trust what did you do what did you do
01:31but who still manages to pull our emotional heartstrings there's something behind me all the
01:40time now please help me a very difficult balancing act to pull off but the formidable rose ailing ellis
01:49nails it i'm really angry at her because her performance was so beautiful it was so stunning
01:56that's what you have been doing no this is just a wasted performance that i'm giving
02:03i was blown away blown away by her talent i don't know how rose did it because she was operating on
02:13three levels to sign and speak at the same time is is very difficult and then to also have like in
02:20your head what you need to be doing as your character i was like this that's so much to
02:27have in your head and she just does it effortlessly did you enjoy it when you got to read the script for
02:37the first time yeah i would it made me so excited because it's such a great character it's such a
02:43complicated moment it's a bit scary it's a bit spooky i love that she's hiding what she doesn't
02:49really want to tell but she didn't really have a choice yeah um and i just that just got me so
02:54excited a lot of your work before has been like uh on stuff you know like obviously stender has been
02:59a sitcom and your theater work this is the first time you've really done something like sci-fi like
03:03this where we're in like a you know the mining center and an internet on a planet that sort of stuff
03:08yeah i'm actually having the best time ever because of that video i mean the attention to the
03:13detail my caution the space though i just it's really hard to act really stabbed when i'm actually
03:20deep down i'm so excited for everything i do it's just amazing yeah what did you see bsl consultant
03:29sarah lawrence was brought in to support rose the cast and the crew for people who don't know what
03:35your role is today tell us what are you doing here i'm here well it's really interesting actually
03:46because in dr who in the script the doctor the character of the doctor actually signs and there's
03:52also a deaf character in this episode so my job has been to teach the doctor how to sign and while
03:58being on set whilst they're recording to make sure that signing is right
04:02on set communication with rose and much of her interaction with the doctor was signed that gave
04:09the cast and crew the opportunity to learn some bsl british sign language before we started filming we
04:15did a deaf awareness course yeah it was really important just to ensure that we we understand
04:21the the barriers that are in place when you are communicating with somebody who's deaf
04:26for example you know facing them when you're talking don't just suddenly turn away yeah um
04:32understanding how to work with an interpreter as well and also there's been you know it's a quite a
04:37unique process that you don't come across every day if you are working with a deaf person just
04:41integrating those processes into working on set it is completely different you learn stuff about the
04:47prejudices there's moments when people turn their backs on alice and so they're deliberately shielding
04:53their lips from her which makes her angry don't turn your back on me please don't turn you back on me
05:00which is all very true that's true a real lived authentic deaf experience so we had rose go through the
05:07entire script and we actually had notes of her of course corrections of how to do things how to phrase things
05:12how to say things exactly hi there my name is a doctor so i got the chance to learn bsl which was amazing and
05:23i think just such a more effective beautiful intentful way of communicating you have to really
05:30commit yourself to communicating to who you're talking to was that okay um i did this and i did
05:36name with two fingers i'm really impressed he's very quickly allowed sound language because normally it
05:43takes on average about seven years to become fluent in sound language so and he was learning to sign after
05:51he finished shoot when he was already so tired well done i've never connected with another actor
05:59like this this is such a different level of communication and it's really beautiful why am i
06:05getting emotional he's going to become like a deaf icon because he's dying name meet the doctor
06:10the deputy means he would go mad over that i think
06:22the well saw the doctor revisiting the scene of an iconic doctor who episode
06:27what is this planet called 6767 the old name 400 000 years ago what was the planet called
06:34it was called midnight i've been here before back in 2008 the tenth doctor took a tourist trip
06:44on the planet midnight a beautiful but airless death trap covered in diamonds
06:51here the passengers and crew and all the watching whovians were terrorized by an unseen entity
06:57fast forward 400 000 years and the 15th doctor is back the planet has been renamed 6767 all the
07:09diamonds have been mined but that entity is still lurking have you ever heard of the planet
07:17what i thought it was all but what's going on russell it's the sequel no one ever expected
07:23and it's the kind of episode you should never do a sequel to so that's where we went frankly right
07:29to that the the interesting thing for me was that i i watched that episode and there are two things
07:36that are similar about midnight did you just one is that that's the same monster even though he's sort
07:42of morphed what did you see it's there that rich like like a shadow just just for a second what's
07:50sort of shadow it's behaving slightly differently it messes with you it plays games why are you
07:55repeating why are you repeating another thing about midnight is it's also a bottle episode in the sense
08:01that it is it's all set in the one small space and within that are a bunch of people and the monster
08:09i can guarantee you everything's fine
08:11the creature in midnight was only ever heard not seen in the well it gets physical and deadly
08:27to me this is the scariest monster that i've faced so far i just think the way that russell wrote it was
08:36terrifying but really beautifully descriptive but but just an implication is your complete own
08:43interpretation as to what this monster actually is oh yes oh gosh just reading it was very like it put
08:51it put shivers down your spine the monster's grown the monster has learned the monster has like
08:58and has been waiting for like a chance to get out and cause trouble so i loved that it was like a bit
09:05of a continuation from midnight the elements kind of said to me like it's a mining planet and it's
09:11deserted and it's deadly and it's poisonous and there's something hidden as people have disappeared
09:17all those scary things are in place this one's got a broken neck so that all just kind of just kind of
09:22demanded it said actually don't try to pretend this is something else this is the same planet
09:28the one big difference between midnight and the well is that in the former everyone was stuck
09:34inside a static space bus but in the latter they're free to run around like action heroes
09:40so is this what superhero v would look like this is quite superhero-ish isn't it it is so it's so
09:46superhero-ish um it's actually kind of more like my bread and butter like especially after
09:52doing a lot more like action things yeah so when i put it on i was like oh i'm home
09:57actually i had to kind of actively be like no this is belinda not
10:03other characters that i've played that i may or may not have played in other franchises in the past
10:07that's also from disney yeah those ones yeah i think the first day or something when we were
10:13running it was very like action hero and i was like yeah no wait i have to be a little bit more normal
10:17person yeah yeah um yeah no it's cool it's been it's been i love this i love this outfit except
10:24going to the loo going for a wee's oh is it it's very difficult i won't go into details but it takes
10:31some time does it it takes time there's so many attachments and zips and i was just uh yeah i need
10:37three people to i need an entourage just to just to help me unclip and that's just you with normal
10:43like that that's actually it's got nothing to do with it yeah it's actually just what i've required
10:49like written in my contract now it's the first of february 2024 and in classic doctor who fashion
11:02we're in a quarry in the night time and yes yes it is freezing cold some things just naturally belong
11:09together strawberries and cream fish fingers and custard the doctor and quarries for over 60 years
11:16these rugged holes have been the go-to doctor who backdrop for a far-flung alien world and tonight
11:22this quarry just outside bridgend in south wales is about to become shooty's first quarry it's kind
11:28of something you inevitably do who is your commanding officer back at base and frankly it's a doctor who
11:34homeland it always works so i like the fact also this is a mining planet so it should look like a
11:38quarry the whole surface used to be diamonds and they've been mined so you're not pretending this is
11:43a rocky planet it's actually been mined so that takes the edge off the quarryness of it yeah love it
11:50tonight we're filming the scene where v and shooty they landed on the planet
11:57oh my god life with you i know i know i know it's very atmospheric here i've never been in a quarry
12:10before everybody's just setting up now at the moment they're talking through with the rest of the
12:16actors who play the troopers talking through the scene with the director and the director of
12:21photography and everything over there oh look at the helmets have you seen those helmets that is way
12:26cooler than i was thinking it would be every one of the troopers has got their own person because
12:33they've got like all the boxes there each box is for specific helmets so they don't get mixed up or
12:39lost or whatever because they've been made especially for each of the different actors every time they
12:42show cut they are fast getting in there because it's cold so they're getting those big coats on and
12:48to keep them warm it was a busy old quarry tonight and with so much going on down here it's a perfect
12:57opportunity for me to dive in and learn about another role in the tv industry
13:02for my work experience this episode i'm joining trainee grip reese well thank you very much for
13:12having me along i guess the first piece of stuff is what's your job here today so i'm a grip trainee
13:18yeah anything the camera goes on we supply that and we set it all up cameras can be attached to
13:27tripods dollies and cranes and tonight i'm going to help reese lay a dolly track
13:36two little track joiners so they join the track they go on the little bits
13:39tidy see if you can work that one out does this like go in the hole so first of all
13:46oh no hang on is he going they go and they clip on those and they join those bits so
13:50they're going to track together yeah there you go and then you can tighten them with that
13:55i see i see i see yeah okay so they're on so that stops it from like slipping and sliding away right
14:01but that's not tight at the minute see how loose that is yeah and there's a little gap in the track
14:05and the dollies are so sensitive you'll feel that little bump even the tiny little gap
14:08even the tiny little bump so yeah you've got a other way just got to make sure that's
14:14right so they're tight in there now the next step now is to level it okay so with leveling
14:22all start at the high end what is it about being a grip that that you know attracted you to do that
14:27job i think from a young age i've always wanted to be hands-on and doing stuff and then later in
14:31life i developed that love for film and tv and i was like right okay that's something to do yeah is
14:36there anywhere i can put two or two together so i went to uni studied film and tv yeah it didn't really
14:41learn what a grip was in uni but i did my own research and thought that sounds amazing yeah
14:45went and did that for two weeks and then yeah i got a job straight away and been doing it ever since
14:49really every day of my job is different and that's what i love about it like you see people
14:54going to offices they're sat down at the same desk the same computer here like when do you get to
14:58come to quarry in the middle of night so thankful i've fell into this bring it up there yeah and then
15:05that's not far off that's pretty good that's pretty good yeah it's a different job to everything else
15:10yeah and you know if you didn't work in industry you wouldn't understand what we do yeah it's quite
15:15hard to explain that to people sometimes especially there and that's bang on nailed it but it's really
15:20important right because obviously all the jazziest cameras in the world all the most experienced
15:25directors if the camera doesn't stay on something then it can't work right no the camera is always
15:30on something which we have to use we we have to do those jobs yeah the dolly and stuff like that we
15:36have to push it for the camera to move for them to achieve like a certain type of shot or swing
15:41the crane to achieve you know the kind of different angles they need or whatnot so it's always like
15:46always hands-on always yeah what have you got on time i know you've got the you've got one career now
15:51but what have you got what else has gone on for you tonight um they're currently setting up a b camera
15:55shot so we've got a dolly really on standby so dollies are basically a camera on wheels yeah essentially
16:00all right boys as the trainee grip reese is tasked with a range of jobs from moving equipment and
16:07heavy lifting to more important stuff like taking the team's food orders
16:12lamb dauphinoir potato how do you spell dauphinoir but i've got one burning question about the job
16:23there's an elephant in the room as well reese we're the only two people here in shorts
16:27yes we are and i was told that i had to wear shorts to come work experience what are we doing
16:34it's february it's the middle of the night there's a there's a vicious wind it's part of the uniform
16:40yeah is it yeah in the industries yeah it's gripped uniform that it's like yeah shorts all the time
16:46you do not believe in wales that's right
16:47still to come on doctor who unleashed the stunts team take flight
17:00iron mask the real midnight creature and spoiler alert we've got an exclusive clip from the next episode
17:08but first helmets
17:13accompanying the doctor and belinda on planet 6767 was an 11 strong trooper unit
17:21i loved having them around it was so much fun when there's like a gang to hang out with it gives you
17:26that extra boost of energy oh it's just been everything and more i'm such a big fan of the show
17:32and um i came in as a fan and i'm leaving as a big fan yeah all of the troopers we sent to trooper boot
17:46camp now that whole element of the way they move the way they come around corners all of the the
17:56protocol was all drilled into them by this ex-military guy who was who was on set with us that was really
18:05fun for them to be able to bond on that military boot camp but then also take that behavior through
18:16fantastic they're no sooner than they finished all that bonding and drill training
18:22the creature starts taking them out
18:27yeah it's a tricky one this because it's the most brutal episode there are nasty deaths in this
18:31actually and there are dead bodies from the moment they enter that base and we had a lot of
18:34conversations about um you know keep those bodies turned away from the camera don't make the bruises
18:39too great if some of them being shot this one is laser fired so we're in a funny territory between
18:45acceptable deaths and non-acceptable deaths which is flying through the air propelled by a psychic force is
18:50somehow acceptable the snapping of the bones the whack on the floor you want a bit of that you want
18:57the visceral pleasure of that but actually you need to go easy on it as well so actually this is careful
19:02the six-year-old's watching this all of the stunts needed to be carefully choreographed by stunt
19:10coordinator derek and max from the wire team to complicate things further everything had to revolve
19:17around a very particular concept in the script russell pinpoints each character's position in relation
19:24to alice and the unseen creature as if they were i was on a clock face so i definitely did not understand
19:31it when i read the script i read that whole sequence as it being like oh wow that's really scary loads of
19:36people die i kind of went okay well well we'll get we'll do that on the day we'll get to that that's
19:42not my business really um i don't have a clue still confused let's have belinda explain it again it's like
19:51this if this is alice and this is us facing her now there is something behind her and if you go behind
20:04it you die if it was a clock face you die at midnight i have to say it took a while to
20:14to get into my brain but when we had rehearsal with amanda she had she actually had a drawn out
20:19clock face with little toy soldier figures so we actually understood what was going on and who
20:24would be flying where who would be landing where when you see it dawn it's absolutely genius
20:34with the action routine mapped out that meant derek and max could get to work
20:40first thing test the different wire rings to be used for each stunt yeah keep that under tension as
20:45soon as you start the ride then bring it to life next prepare the nitrogen ratchet system seriously
20:51i'm not making this up it's used for fast acceleration and power by standby in three two one action
21:05spot on yeah so what we're trying to achieve now is just the last bit more energy going into the wall
21:13then i think we've got it nailed but if you sort of shot that right down the line you'd get away with
21:18that anyway all right well done mate that's all that's brilliant it brings it to life now it's time
21:25to try out the digital four point wire rig this allows the team to pre-program repeatable and accurate
21:32flight paths into a computer we haven't used the wind system on doctor who before but when this sequence
21:38came up um it was max's idea to be honest um and he's just said it would save so much more time if we use that system
21:48each wire has its own winch so the the same four wires can do every single person
21:54all around the set so you don't have to keep moving rigs and changing wires and and then if
22:01people do change their mind and they want someone to start two foot nearer or two foot further back
22:08it's easier to do than if they were on a conventional wire system tests over it's on to the real thing
22:15principal photography on the episode finished yesterday so the stunt team can now take their
22:20time working through the long list of shots that they still need for the clock sequence
22:25three two one action because we're using the winch system and we rehearsed it and we've dialed
22:37everything in this makes this so much easier we just built it up slowly with sort of speed wise but
22:44they're landing in the same place every time i just love how it's been confusion program
22:49all their wire so that they lift up in the back same place and land at the back same place and it
22:56looks so gentle to land that their feet just go like that the last shot to get before the day wraps
23:03is a point of view angle from one of the flying troopers here we go shooting and three two one action
23:12it's not quite as high technology as we used to but it did look very good
23:20it's him flying through the air holding a gopro is quite cool
23:25oh that's excellent yeah really good work really good
23:39it's great
23:42the universe prides itself on the fact that many of the baddies the doctor encounters
23:51are physical live action characters
23:56not only are these creatures testament to the skills and talents of the teams who bring them to life
24:02they're also invaluable for giving the actors something to react to
24:05but how do you get the cast in the right frame of mind when the four is never seen well you give a
24:14fright mask to unleashed regular paul casey and tell him to go and scare the pants off him there's always
24:20that chance that there could be a shadow somewhere on a wall or you may get a very small glimpse of him
24:26but you never actually see him yeah so their reaction should be real right because there is something
24:33there and don't get me wrong i'm going to go all out to scare them absolutely yeah yeah yeah
24:39to kind of help get rose in that headspace i had paul casey right behind her and rose was immediately
24:48like oh it was it was just it was so creepy thank you thank you with the green tree you realize a lot of
24:56imagination oh behind you there's something there but for him to actually wear a mask it come up it works
25:03but it did me okay this is what alice is experiencing first bit of uh interaction in paul she was
25:10definitely like freaked out right that's the idea that's what's living behind it yeah luckily paul's
25:17a mate now so he wouldn't try to scare me but i am keen to find out if any of the who crew have had any
25:22weird or spooky experiences when i was very young i woke up at night and saw lights outside my window you
25:31too yeah yeah it was definitely coming from above oh in my bedroom this is when i was a teenager i just
25:39had the distinct feeling that there was a person in the room but it was so strong that feeling that i
25:47was like i'm actually too scared to open my eyes and look when i was a little kid we went to social
25:52secret bunker over in dover yeah yeah yeah and i turned around and i thought i saw someone in an army
25:56uniform and i was like oh that's cool they've got people dressed up here so when i spoke to
26:01one of the people that worked in the front desk i was like oh is there like is there people dressed
26:04up here like walking around she said no i was like oh you're the only people in the in the tunnels
26:10i was like oh okay cool it was like around mid-morning i remember because i checked my phone it's like
26:166 a.m yeah weekend why am i waking up why are you up at six in the morning um but like i just felt like
26:22my whole body sort of like caesar and then something with like three like almost like a claw
26:28like try and claw up my face and then like i just woke up immediately after that and i was like that
26:33is really creepy so basically i woke up in the middle of the night i went to the toilet and i left
26:39my door open so you could see it in my hallway yeah and then on the side there was like a wooden
26:44bowl that just decoration and i saw it move across and then i thought all the way no no no no stop stop
26:52i put the light on and it just stopped and that's a different spot i got so scared i ran into bed and
26:58i heard and then um i felt someone was like pushing it down to my back like lying down to my back and then
27:04i felt this clicking it might sort of cross me and i thought it's my brain playing my brain playing
27:11then i did the research about it and that day and apparently when you shut your eye and because
27:17i'm deaf your brain start using other senses to try and make sense of the environment and i think
27:23because i woke up in the middle of the night my eyes start playing trick on me oh it was a ghost
27:30no right thankfully despite all the scary stories and weird experiences i've managed to navigate the
27:39day without getting scared at all i've been practicing my die fall i've been practicing
27:43how i land are you going big i am i'm trying my best yeah oh my goodness don't do that to me paul
27:52you're horrible man stop that i can't go over this i'm off goodbye this wasn't in my contract
28:00oh my little movements are just it's so great did i get you you did get me good i'm trying to keep
28:08together this is a hazard and we're going to show bye paul
28:13next time on doctor who this week i found someone who knows its secrets in fact she's even
28:23been inside it i'm going to ask her to introduce herself hello everyone my name is ruby cindy
28:39and i'm going to ask her to introduce herself and i'll see you next time on my screen
28:53that was the first one of the most important things that i was going to ask her to give you a
