00:00Hey Shabbat Shalom brothers and sisters welcome back I thank you again for joining me today
00:04today I want to talk about uh the touchy taboo uh subject called uh polygamy in the bible and then
00:13I'd say modern polygamy uh you know some groups practice this no Islam does but uh within the
00:24Christian communities some of them have been and are currently practicing polygamy and they're
00:31basing it off the bible now do they have a case or not well I got some notes here bible
00:39references
00:39and everything else and we can try to put this together but in the meantime I'm not going to
00:45talk about King David and Bathsheba that's a well-known fact but that uh kind of reminds me
00:52not exactly but kind of reminds me of uh the Brighamites when Brigham Young and the Mormons
00:58went out to Utah and they started not marrying not exactly marrying unmarried women that were virgins
01:06or whatever but they was taking other men's women under the guise saying Yahweh was the one
01:15commanding it and the only way for the woman to get true salvation was if they would
01:21marry them and have have children with them which uh that doesn't add to water or anything that's
01:29that's I can't believe people back in the 19th century were actually biblical illiterates they
01:38didn't read their bible I mean compared to now it's more uh I guess you'd call it these days
01:44sort of more godless I hate to use that word but back then a lot of people were more christian
01:51and
01:52you know in a way but you'd think these people would actually read the bible and take it to heart
01:57you know but yeah I'm not going to talk about King David and Bathsheba you can look that up it's
02:02a well
02:03known story and everything and and for the other other thing is um this not just goes for just say
02:13the
02:13fundamentalist Jesus Christ the Latter-day Saints groups or uh the polygamists yeah Mormons but it
02:21also it also goes to other groups that practice this and then like like the case with David Koresh
02:29he would he uh we absolved marriages and he said all women belong to me is is the report and
02:37he is
02:37marrying little from little girls to women of age like in the 50s uh but anyways I want to add
02:46another
02:46thing for former Mormons or current Mormons that have questions or about polygamy go to the doctrine
02:54of covenants uh 132 and check that out it has a highlight it says at the end of the description
03:02that the revelation was known earlier than what a lot of people believe but uh I just wanted to say
03:11that and how and also how how they's trying to convince Joseph's legal wife Emma to go along with
03:18it Emma she's having little difficulties with it so uh that's all I got to say about that so
03:26but uh you know also the Torah Torah forbids people from marrying family members at least
03:38I'm not saying completely polygamy but family members it forbids it and uh I got some notes here
03:45we're going to go through uh and besides after this feel free to comment if I left something out or
03:53maybe I could stand and prove be proven wrong about something but I'm quoting uh some bible verses and
04:00the storylines and everything so what I want to start with right now is uh if you go into then
04:06open
04:06your bible you follow me and check these words yourself prove yourself don't listen to me it's what's
04:12in the bible that counts now I'm on to Genesis uh chapter 2 24 and this was the beginning man
04:21and
04:21woman you know woman meaning singular not plural uh therefore shall a man leave his father and mother
04:29and shall cleave unto his wife singular and they shall be one flesh not three fleshes this is the
04:37original state what it's supposed to be right here uh now we can go to uh Genesis uh chapter 4
04:4619 was
04:47skipped down a little bit and this is uh says and Lamaque took upon unto him two wives the name
04:56of one
04:56was Adah and the name of the other was Zillah now this Lamaque wasn't the Noah's son this was a
05:04descendant of Cain yes Cain the Cain the one that unalived his brother Abel and Lamaque took two
05:14wives and that's the first instance of what you call plural marriage or polygamy or whatever so it
05:21didn't come from the righteous this idea it come from a wicked bloodline the wicked men ones besides
05:28and and also to note about Noah Noah Noah it says in the bible he only had one wife and
05:34uh eight people
05:35went in the ark not nine not twelve or anything the brothers to up to my knowledge only had one
05:42wife
05:42each one had a wife I don't know if Ham probably decided to grab a couple more I don't Bible
05:48doesn't
05:49say that but but uh anyways excuse me let's go to uh Genesis 16 which uh I'm not going to
05:58read a whole
05:58chapter let you let you read the chapter and this is the birth of Ishmael this is Abraham's first
06:03fleshly son with uh Hagar the Egyptian uh bondswoman and then uh she was this is an instant where Sarah
06:15couldn't uh conceive at the time she was old and everything so with her blessings she went ahead and
06:22gave Hagar to Abraham to have a son despite Yahweh promising that Sarah and Abraham would have a son
06:32would have their own son you know and an heir an heir to the you know uh and see uh
06:38the job dropped down
06:40to Genesis uh 21 9 and this was a feast for Isaac this is a celebration for Isaac and and
06:46Sarah saw the
06:47son of Hagar the Egyptian which she had born unto Abraham uh they were mocking mocking and making fun
06:55and disrespecting and you know not just Isaac but the Sarah and them they were in a whole event
07:01that's mocking him and this is this is what I'm getting at was Sarah probably didn't want this to happen
07:11but she wanted Abraham to have a have a son and that didn't have much faith in having a child
07:18together
07:18Sarah and Abraham and uh and after that resentment started boiling between Sarah and Hagar they started
07:26they started having this little uh issues uh Genesis 21 10 says wherefore she said unto Abraham cast out
07:36this bond woman and her son for the the son of this bond woman shall not be an heir with
07:43my son even with
07:44Isaac so Sarah wanted them gone they was committing trouble and and besides Sarah was thinking about
07:52her son the rightful well they see rightful heirs but technically Ishmael was the firstborn but
08:00she thought she thought Ishmael and Hagar was a threat so she implored Abraham to exile them out out of
08:08the camp
08:10uh you see it says here where was I at uh it says by the way it was uh Sarah's
08:15idea for Abraham to have
08:16seed with Hagar and encourage it uh the scriptures and the scriptures doesn't mention uh Isaac ever having
08:23more than one wife he could have had concubines followed in his father's footsteps uh but we we don't
08:30know the bible it guess it wasn't a very important issue in the bible um now we've got the genesis
08:3725
08:38the chapter like I said I'll let you read the old chapter and I encourage you guys to read it
08:42but uh
08:43Abraham married Qatar after the death of Sarah now Qatar could have been a concubine a high level
08:52cocky mind to Abraham uh I think one Jewish man actually said Qatar could have been Hagar
08:58and they reunited and had more kids because Abraham Qatar had had a few more kids and he was
09:05over a hundred of course that's that's amazing uh but uh genesis chapter 29 now we're going to drop
09:16down to uh Jacob the patriarch Israel himself and this is a this is an interesting story Jacob works
09:24seven years for Rachel only to be deceived by Laban with Leah the older sister uh Jacob works another
09:31seven years for Rachel and gets her so he worked seven years for his uncle Laban and Laban promised
09:38Rachel after the seven years and you know in marriage so when that comes around Laban that they have a
09:45celebration Laban gets uh Jacob a little tipsy drunk and Jacob wakes up next to Leah he married her
09:52instead and he says I wanted Rachel I didn't want Leah and uh Laban said no this is tradition this
09:58is you
09:58got to have this tradition so Jacob accepts the basis I work another seven years for Rachel he does that
10:05and he has sister wives I'm not saying I'm not saying it was a sin at the time it's like
10:13God uh Yahweh
10:14God uh tolerated it he didn't it wasn't a beginning but he he allowed it but he had a certain
10:21plan
10:22for this specific thing he planned he had a plan for you know his master plan yeah he worked for
10:30he worked
10:30for Sarah and got her Genesis 30 dropped down there the sister wives had rival have rivalries together
10:38and it heats up when Rachel gives uh her handmaid Belah to Jacob for children since Rachel was uh barren
10:46Leah in response gives her handmaid Zillah uh Zillah to uh Jacob for more children Rachel eventually
10:54conceived Joseph and Benjamin and uh Joseph was uh Israel's favorite son of course but see what you
11:03got here is a sister rivalry going on you know each one wants to be the favorite wife of their
11:10husband
11:11Jacob in this case Jacob uh that's what happens that's what happens in a polygamist uh relationship
11:17sure there's been uh issues I think uh accounts or historical accounts and uh like the Mormon
11:26church uh Brighamites especially was uh sister wives become very close take out for each other work
11:32for each other there's a sisterly bond bond there but also there's a couple things in the Mormon church
11:38where uh certain wives degraded the other wives put them down too uh now let's go to Genesis 26 uh
11:45go go back to Genesis 26 34 I'm just backtracking here and and this is about Esau which was uh
11:54Jacob's brother and Esau was 40 years old when he took to wife Judith and Judith you know that's like
12:01a
12:01female version of uh the name Judah which is one of the patriarchs of the 12 tribes okay uh the
12:08daughter
12:08of Biri the Hittite and uh Bashamath the daughter of Elon the Hittite so here Esau's taken two wives and
12:20not just from his family like how uh Jacob did that and then uh Abraham wanted Isaac to have like
12:26a close
12:27uh the peoples he didn't want him to mingle with pagans is what it was uh but yeah we got
12:34that
12:35Genesis 26 35 we'll go next one uh which were a grief of mine unto Isaac and Rebecca so they
12:42had
12:42to instruct him for one stick stick with you know your own people and the other thing was you know
12:49probably don't marry two of them because like I said Isaac and Rebecca Rebecca didn't have uh sister
12:56wives or anything that we know of the Bible doesn't say and uh we'll go to Genesis 28 uh verse
13:049
13:04then when Esau unto Ishmael his uncle and took unto the wives which he had uh
13:15uh Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael so he grabs another wife and that and that's his uh that'd be
13:22his cousin or half cousin but uh he wasn't done with wives he had he's getting multiple wives and that
13:31you
13:31know Genesis uh 38 let's see yes Genesis 38 this is the example and story of the Old Testament
13:43tradition where if a man dies the brother takes the woman their sister-in-law to provide seed for the
13:51deceased brother see provide seed now if the woman already has seed there's no reason to marry her and
13:59give her other seed she has seed if uh this case is not technically polygamy in this case because the
14:06brothers were younger and not already married uh can't explain can't explain Judas since he's uh
14:13seek company with uh who he thought was a prostitute which uh is not really a good thing
14:21uh here we go i'm gonna write not from the bible here read something else rules and limits in the
14:29torah it says no explicit it was no explicit band technically the text contains no direct commandment
14:36outlawing a man from marrying more than one wife provided he can financially support them and fulfill
14:43marital marital duties to each meaning if you got a whole bunch of wives and then you got a whole
14:49bunch of children on top of that it's up to you the man to financially provide and do your marital
14:56duties and uh and it is in mormon records back in the 19th century that these men weren't active
15:05fathers with all their kids didn't perform more affectionate duties to the wives and they didn't
15:13financially support a lot of them that was on the hands of neighbors uh co-workers in their uh
15:20church uh and uh family and neighbors families yeah but the the father was mainly absent sure
15:27sure the man would have a favorite wife he would have a favorite wife maybe a couple favorite children
15:32that he did not neglect but the other ones the other women they had to fend for themselves and a
15:38lot
15:38of these sister wives they lived together and they backed each other up the best they couldn't
15:42helped raise all these children each one of them probably had like just say roughly eight
15:48children apiece or somewhere in between that i'm just saying it wasn't you know it wasn't a very
15:53ideal it was an idea the ideal life for a woman but they were faithful to the cause of salvation
16:01but the man yeah he wanted to get a booty call you know he'd go to anyone he wanted to
16:07and that was about it you know hit hit and run get out and let the woman deal with all
16:12the hard work
16:13and everything but uh now here we go it says sister restrictions this like i said this is uh rules
16:20and
16:20limits in the torah leviticus 18 verse 18 explicitly forbids marrying a wife's sister that's in the torah
16:30that's old testament right there the old covenant uh as a rival as a rival wife during her lifetime
16:37which some scholars view as a restriction on general polygamy while traditional views see it as
16:44limiting only sister wives now but of course scholars have to get way in on it you know the pros
16:51and the
16:51cons of the plural wife saying you know it's uh you're gonna have that uh okay now says limits on
16:59kings
17:00uh deuteronomy 17 verse 17 warns that a king shall not multiply wise for themselves
17:07lest his heart turns away and that happened in solomon's and it could have happened uh afterwards
17:12and like row bone going down the bible don't exactly mention it but that's you know probably
17:18what happened to the other kings most of them because there's some righteous kings in judah at least
17:22they tried to they really did uh okay setting a specific restriction for monarchs that's what
17:29that's what that says and uh and king david he should have known that solomon should have known
17:37that because when you're king one of the duties back then was you had to like copy copy the torah
17:44copy torah you had to copy you had to take a pen the king because that like when he's writing
17:49it that's
17:49refreshed in his mind not just reading it he had to write it down and it implanted in his mind
17:55that
17:56was a good idea too but uh here's another one protection of rights exodus chapter 21 10 dictates
18:06that if a man takes an additional wife he must not diminish the food clothing or marital rights of the
18:14first wife so if he thinks he can have another another wife third fourth wife it cannot affect
18:21the first wife at all it cannot affect her she still gets or saying you know the same rights you
18:27know what rights she had before you know nothing diminishes she don't get less food bad food cheap
18:33clothes things like that that's in the rules but like i said we're going to get to the new testament
18:40view
18:40now right the new testament view here says uh yeshua points back to genesis when yahweh made them male
18:48and female and that the two not three or more shall become one flesh by emphasizing the original design
18:58yeshua reframes marriage away from away from the mosaic allowances see what allowances not commandments
19:06and towards exclusive lifelong monogamy and here we go paul's going to say the husband of one wife
19:15rule in first timothy chapter 3 uh verse 2 and then chapter uh chapter 3 verses uh verse 12 and
19:25then you
19:26go to titus chapter 1 verse 6 church leaders must be husbands of one wife one wife and you could
19:34look
19:34boy look at these up yeah okay passages like first corinthians chapter 7 verse 2 states each man
19:42is to have his own wife and each wife should have one husband yeah and what uh
19:51there's a word called palandry and palandry means a wife with more than one husband yeah and that did
20:01happen too in mormon history and palandry is definitely forbidden palandry uh started with
20:09joseph smith where he'd secretly secretly marry these women he'd say crazy stuff like if he if
20:16an angel of the lord came to me with a flaming sword he said if you don't marry me he's
20:21going to strike me
20:22down right then and there he'd say all kinds of stuff to get and he'd pursue these women if they
20:28turn
20:28them down he was really more into pursuing them more and he'd say uh well you just live with your
20:35husband let's keep this hush hush you live with your husband but you come back to me when i need
20:39you wink wink you know that type of stuff and uh but then when brigham came around after joseph and
20:46hiram were martyred in carthage and then they moved out west where it was isolated
20:54he decided to take the wives a lot of them take even take the wives the whole polygamy situation
21:01transformed and whatever wife these high officials wanted they got they can take your wife they could
21:09take your daughter even if daughter was married and he couldn't do nothing about it because it's a
21:15matter of salvation believe it or not uh yeah wife has more than one husband uh okay ephesians
21:255 25 calls a husband to love the wife singular mirroring the love messiah has for the church
21:34one church one messiah one savior yeshua it's not two churches not three because of
21:43polygamy such a big thing don't you think we've got three churches four churches
21:47things like that and uh if you go to malachi chapter 3 uh verse 6 it says yahweh does not
21:54change
21:54you know yahweh he permitted this for a certain you know certain period he permitted it just like
22:01unfortunately i don't know why he permitted uh divorce he permitted slavery but he had certain
22:08guidelines about this you know treat treat your bonds servants well and when come to uh divorce it
22:18was under the saying of adultery it was very hard plus you had to provide uh certificates stuff like
22:25that and uh he it wasn't it wasn't the original design of what yahweh had in mind for his children
22:34that's all i'm saying but in my view these men committed adultery and the women unknowingly
22:43committed adultery they were bamboozled tricked deceived just like even the garden she was deceived
22:49the men like adam deliberately sinned so i don't know i just wanted to give you a lowdown on the
23:00bible
23:00and i don't know polygamy you know i think to me i'd think if i had more than one wife
23:06that'd be expensive
23:07on today's age i mean you'd have to be filthy rich a millionaire to have
23:13a handful of wives you know five six wives but i i couldn't you know i couldn't do that because
23:19you
23:20know i just want one the love of my life sure we you know we have good times bad times
23:24that's you
23:25know that's how it is but you know the love is still there and i couldn't imagine you know
23:32sharing that attention away from one woman wife to another woman wife you know and you know there's a
23:41lot of animosity going around and children are being confused because children go to school if it's a
23:45public school and oh really i got i got two or three mommies like i got one daddy three mommies
23:51and
23:52whatever and uh that would that would cause a lot of confusion with uh the other children that has
23:58a single mom and wife or just a single parent in general but uh but anyways that's all i wanted
24:05to
24:05say right now and i thank you guys again for joining me let me know what you think about this
24:09if you want
24:09to add anything comment on anything i'd really love to hear from you i'd appreciate it very much
24:14and uh until we meet again brothers and sisters peace out and shalom
