As Christmas draws nearer, more and more people have begun to shop.

In the nation's second City of San Fernando, despite experiencing higher volumes of people, vendors are reporting mixed views on just how well overall sales are going.

Our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh was on High Street San Fernando today and tells us more.

00:00San Fernando is the shopping capital of the Southland for many, and on Saturday, five days
00:12before the Christmas holiday, the number of people passing through the streets of the second city
00:17has increased compared to the weeks before. Even so, some vendors say it's less than it used to
00:23be leading up to past Christmases.
00:26The place is actually dead. It's not like how it used to be. Everything just looked. People
00:32are early shopping, they're just walking around. They're buying what they can afford.
00:37It's started pretty well. The only interruption is if rain falls. But so far, it's started
00:43pretty well and we're looking forward to doing really good today.
00:47We are custom selling every year, but right now, funds low and things cannot talk to the country.
00:52And they don't have no kind of business.
00:54A steady stream of people walked High Street as Soka Parang music from various doors flowed
01:00onto the pavement. Abuzz with movement, street vendors credited the city corporation for allowing
01:06their presence, which they believe will invite more people in the coming days.
01:11They gave me a little blind to sell from yesterday on the street, so things now start to pick up.
01:16Only yesterday, the mayor allowed us to sell. He finally feel sorry for us and gave us the
01:23opportunity to earn a living, which we're very thankful of. You understand? But to say sales-wise,
01:30right now, we're just trying to catch up. You understand? Plenty people in our money and things. The economy,
01:36no plenty people in working. So things in the world will be like before. You understand? So whatever
01:43little you get, you have to be thankful and grateful.
01:46The crowd now start to come in because we're feeling the spirit of Christmas. Before even
01:51the store owners, them looked like they were going through something because they look at
01:54their face, they were sad. But from yesterday, we start building up that spirit because when
01:59people come, they want to hear people bawling, sale, sale, get your pants, get your shirt,
02:05get your pants. You know, and that bringing the spirit of Christmas.
