00:00This week on Rides Down Under,
00:29Aussie Truckers, it's all about the ladies.
00:32That's right, you can take a break this week,
00:34it's all about the ladies.
00:36We meet Nicole, who heads up the Diesel Doctor business.
00:39This lady can do it all.
00:41Metal fabrication, welder.
00:43Oh, and did I mention, she's a pole dancer too.
00:46The SAR, chassis and cab get a lick of paint in Don,
00:50my dad's favourite colour, red.
00:53We meet Shannon, who heads up the TCB operations
00:56and assists Don in running the show.
00:58But first up, we meet Tanya Bodzik,
01:01CFMEU shop steward and mother of three boys
01:04and safety officer on one of Melbourne's biggest building sites.
01:17How I got into the building industry all began back in 2016,
01:22probably towards the end of 2015.
01:24I became a newly single mum.
01:27I had three little boys.
01:28Pretty sure the twins would have been about four.
01:31Older son would have been five.
01:33Starting prep, that was probably the hardest thing
01:37I've probably ever had to have gone through.
01:39So at that point of time in my life,
01:41I hadn't worked for seven years.
01:43Obviously, I was a stay-at-home mum.
01:45So it was very difficult for me to get back into the workforce.
01:50Clearly, I needed to get a job and provide for my three boys.
01:53So my brother is currently in the industry
01:55and he got me a kickstart into construction cleaning,
01:59which is high-rise cleaning.
02:01Had no idea what it involved, what I was doing,
02:05let alone really being surrounded by so many people.
02:07I'd been quite isolated for so many years.
02:10Women on building sites can do any job they want
02:12and there's no barrier to any of those jobs on site
02:16and, in fact, we encourage women to take part
02:19in all facets of the building game.
02:22Tanya's a great example for any woman
02:24who wants to come onto a building site.
02:26Sure, it's daunting, but once you get in there
02:28and you prove your bona fides that you're a genuine person
02:31and, you know, you'll go well.
02:33And she's a perfect example of that.
02:35Someone who turns up, has a go, does her job,
02:37you know, universally liked.
02:41I remember the first day.
02:44It was pretty intimidating, seeing so many people.
02:47Obviously, it was more males back then.
02:50It took a while for me to overcome
02:52that feeling of intimidation.
02:56As time went on and progressed, you know,
02:58you got to meet many different people on site,
03:01gain a lot of new friends.
03:03Yeah, just progressed from there
03:04and probably spent a fair few years cleaning
03:06until I realised that I don't just want to clean anymore.
03:10You know, there was a lot of things that I've seen on site
03:12that wasn't brought up, that wasn't, you know,
03:14no-one had the voice to speak up about.
03:16And I'm quite a protective person.
03:19I do speak my mind if something's not right.
03:22And I just realised that that's not what I want to be.
03:24I want more out of what I was doing.
03:27We've got lots of opportunities.
03:29We've got lots of women that have changed their lives
03:31coming into the industry, for example,
03:32where they didn't know the segue of how to get into it.
03:35And, you know, you've got someone like Tanya
03:37who's a single mother of three children and all that.
03:39I mean, she's fantastic.
03:41She looks after the members.
03:42She represents them.
03:43She's a fantastic story.
03:44We've got lots of women like Tanya there, you know,
03:46who love the building industry.
03:48And we've come a long way.
03:49Like, we've got this reputation as a Neanderthal industry.
03:52And I've seen on the news they were talking about,
03:55banging on about inequality in the workplace,
03:57how women get paid less than men.
03:58Well, that's not the case in the building industry.
04:00We're one of the few industries where
04:02you get paid exactly the same as the man.
04:04There is no, you know, everyone's treated equally.
04:06You know, I've got a daughter
04:07who if she ever one day ends up in the building industry,
04:10my job at the moment and the path that we've set is
04:13she will have no obstacles in her way.
04:15She can do the same as my two sons can.
04:17You know, one of them's already in the industry,
04:19but if the other one ends up in it,
04:20she'll have the same opportunities as them.
04:22And that's what we're doing.
04:23We're opening it up for them to have the same opportunities.
04:26They are good workers.
04:28They're a valuable asset to us.
04:30They are union through and through.
04:31And they are loyal.
04:32And I think it's refreshing to see so many women
04:35and the way it's going.
04:36We've got three female organisers here
04:38and they do a fantastic job.
04:40Some have had some of the biggest battles of all time
04:42and won every one of them.
04:43They're very efficient.
04:45I go, Jesus, if I ever piss you off,
04:47please give me a heads up.
04:49Having more females in the workplace
04:51has definitely progressed over the years.
04:55When I did first start cleaning,
04:56there was women that I was working with,
04:59mostly women, more than male in the cleaning industry.
05:03So having more females on site definitely was a bonus,
05:06especially when I started
05:07because you obviously felt more comfortable.
05:10But, yeah, from 2016 to now,
05:13there is a lot more women
05:14and it's fantastic seeing more women on site.
05:16I think as the industry progresses
05:19with having more women on site,
05:21everything just becomes equal.
05:23Like, you know, the industry sees more women on site
05:27and you just become treated as an equal on site.
05:30The girls now are doing rigging, dogging.
05:34They're going for it.
05:35Seeing more women in trades is what I would love to see.
05:38I wish that when I first started in the industry,
05:41I didn't know about getting to any other trade.
05:43I just needed a job.
05:44I didn't know what it involved
05:45or didn't know about becoming a chippy or a plumber
05:48or a sparky, you know,
05:51so I had no idea about what else I could get into
05:54because I didn't know what I liked.
05:56So there's a lot more women doing different roles now
05:59and I think if I could go back in time
06:02from when I first started
06:04and I'd known what was out there,
06:06I definitely would have done a trade.
06:08So I think that it's important for more women
06:11to get into a trade
06:12and have something to back them,
06:14have something behind them.
06:16Girls can do anything that guys can do.
06:18You put your mind to it.
06:19If you like something, I believe you just go for it.
06:21I first started as cleaning,
06:30then I got on to labouring.
06:32So once I was made redundant through COVID,
06:34it was a difficult time for everyone,
06:35I became a labourer.
06:37And labouring involved using hand tools, drills,
06:43saws, everything.
06:44It was all different sorts of things.
06:47I was shoveling concrete,
06:49I was raking asphalt,
06:51doing anything that I possibly could do.
06:53I felt that I had to prove that I was a hard worker
06:56to be where I am today.
06:58You did feel like you had to prove more
07:01because you were a woman.
07:04And some of the time you felt like,
07:06you know, you weren't treated as well as you,
07:09you know, that people would think
07:10that you can't do that role
07:12until you can prove them wrong.
07:14And like I said before, I became, you know,
07:16I was using all the power tools and things like that.
07:19And I'd learnt all that myself.
07:21And I love that.
07:22I felt, I just felt like I gained that confidence
07:25by doing all those things
07:26and learning all these things.
07:28You know, the building industry,
07:29it's an endless choices that you can choose
07:32to do anything that you want to do
07:33if you put your mind to it.
07:34My last builder that I worked for,
07:36I was nominated Tradie Lady of the Year Australia-wide,
07:38which is, that was like winning bloody a Globy Award.
07:43Didn't expect to win or anything,
07:45but just to be nominated by my peers
07:47and to be recognised as a woman
07:49in the building industry was, I'd won already.
07:52So it was a great experience.
07:55Most definitely anyone can do it.
07:57And if, you know, the young women are watching me today
08:00and, you know, watching this video,
08:02you can do anything you put your mind, you can do it.
08:05I mean, I thought that I wouldn't be able to do it,
08:07having, being a single mum, having three boys,
08:10working all these hours.
08:11But if you really want something in life
08:13and you're passionate about something,
08:15you can go for it and, you know,
08:16there's nothing stopping you.
08:31Coming up, we catch up with Nicole,
08:33manager, welder and fabricator from Diesel Doctor.
08:36Did I mention she's into pole dancing for fitness?
08:41We have some great merchandise here.
08:49In fact, it's trucking good.
08:51See what I did there?
08:52Yeah, it's pretty smart.
08:54We have T-shirts, we have hoodies,
08:57we have bar mats, caps,
08:58special trucks were built over the years.
09:00I noticed that you've also got the Italian-themed one
09:02showcasing your heritage.
09:04How cool is that?
09:05I absolutely love it.
09:06Plus, like you said, every size possible.
09:09And I like an oversized hoodie.
09:11And I was lucky enough for Don to actually give me one.
09:14Did I?
09:14My dad had three girls
09:26and I think I was his tomboy.
09:29My first recollection of really building something
09:31was when I helped dad put together
09:34a whole bunch of fluoro lights for a pub
09:37and it was just very repetitive,
09:39very starting from scratch
09:41and making every component
09:43and then doing the installation.
09:45And it was something a little bit different,
09:47but I just loved it.
09:48Dad and I were both probably a little bit crazy.
09:53We tend to sort of push things,
09:56push boundaries pretty hard.
09:58But I think we have fun.
09:59We do what we love to do.
10:01And I've definitely taken that from my father
10:04and I'm always learning new things,
10:05always trying new things.
10:07So dad passed away 20, 22 years ago.
10:11And I really hope that, you know,
10:13he watches me and he's just like,
10:14that's my girl.
10:16I have been very lucky
10:18to have some very influential men in my life
10:21and very supportive men in my life.
10:23And I did once remember saying
10:26I'd never want to be a truck driver.
10:28And the more and more I was in trucks
10:30and around large machinery,
10:32the more and more I wanted to do it.
10:34So I got given the opportunity from my ex-partner
10:37and he really encouraged me
10:39and he helped me to grow.
10:41And yeah, that's sort of how my love
10:44for the things bigger started.
10:46And I suppose for me,
10:47it was that element of,
10:49it was really scary.
10:50These things were big
10:51and they were dangerous
10:52and you hold a lot of responsibility
10:55when you're operating or driving them.
10:57And when you achieve a big day
11:00and you, you know, did great things,
11:02it just made you feel good.
11:09I've got a lot of things that I do in my life.
11:12So I do have a little farm
11:14where I run sort of 20, 22 head of cattle.
11:18I breed black Angus.
11:20I also have a couple of horses and some goats.
11:22It was one of those things
11:25where I needed to know.
11:27I just needed to know
11:28and so I thought the only way
11:29you're going to learn is by doing
11:30and that's where I go
11:32with everything in life.
11:33I need to know.
11:34I'll just do it.
11:37A couple of years ago,
11:38I got given a 1.7 tonne excavator bucket
11:41and I wanted to turn it into a letterbox
11:44and the only way I could do that
11:46was by welding it
11:47and I didn't know how to weld.
11:49So, what was that?
11:50Probably about three years ago now.
11:52And so I thought I'll pick up a welder
11:55and I'll just give it a crack
11:56and they said, no.
11:57Someone said to me,
11:57don't MIG weld,
11:59go and learn how to TIG weld
12:00because once you MIG weld,
12:02you'll never TIG.
12:03And so I spent the last two years TIG welding
12:06and only picked up a MIG welder
12:08sort of seven or eight months ago.
12:10So yeah, it's sort of been that progress.
12:12I still haven't made my letterbox.
12:16So I had been driving trucks
12:18for about three years
12:20and I'd got to that stage
12:22where my mind was active
12:24but I wasn't learning anything
12:25and I had that skill of welding
12:28in my back pocket
12:30and the opportunity came up here at TCB.
12:33So I couldn't think of a better combination
12:37of me being a truck driver
12:39and also then now having to,
12:41you know, put the pretty shiny stuff
12:43on the truck
12:44but with the knowledge of trucks
12:45in the background as well.
12:47I like to tell Don to get out of my shop
12:49when he comes in
12:50only because mostly it's his trucks
12:52that are in here.
12:53We have a list of stuff for me to do
12:56and every time he comes in
12:58that list gets longer and longer and longer.
13:00I've thrown all the texters away
13:02and I hope that, you know,
13:03one day he'll just walk in
13:04and go, good job and walk out.
13:06But no, he's good fun.
13:08He's very supportive.
13:10He definitely invests in the shop.
13:12He invests in me
13:14and I just, I feel really,
13:16I'm very happy working here.
13:18Maria is adorable.
13:21I have a really good relationship with Maria.
13:24Don and Maria, the combination of the two,
13:26they make working here a lot of fun.
13:28Maria said to me a little while ago,
13:31she said,
13:32I just want this to be a place
13:34where people want to be
13:35and I want to make it
13:37that that's the environment
13:38I want to create for my employees.
13:41And when she said that to me,
13:42my respect for her
13:44and for this company grew a lot.
13:46But it wasn't that just that she said it,
13:49it's that there's actions
13:50and there's processes
13:53that are all aligning with what she said.
13:57Yeah, so I have four beautiful kids.
14:00I have a 20-year-old, 19-year-old,
14:0315-year-old, 14-year-old.
14:05They are very self-efficient,
14:07which I am very grateful for.
14:10So it's, but it is hard
14:12because I do spend 10 hours here a day most days.
14:15So, but we manage, we manage at home
14:17and we also manage to spend time together.
14:20We do lots of sports together.
14:22Yeah, it's just,
14:24sometimes I feel like I'm doing the wrong thing,
14:26but ultimately my job is to be their mother
14:29and I can't be their mother
14:30unless I can provide for them.
14:32And I feel like if I'm doing what I love
14:34while I provide for them,
14:36it's a win-win.
14:39I believe that, you know,
14:41in order to do any job effectively,
14:42you've got to maintain your health.
14:44Health and fitness has always meant a lot to me.
14:47I eat well.
14:48I run two, three times a week.
14:50Over summer, it's even more.
14:52I'm also a dancer,
14:54so I do pole fitness
14:55and I do hoops or a lira.
14:58So yeah, I'm very active
14:59in terms of keeping strong and fit and agile
15:04because I do have to get in and around
15:05and under that truck.
15:07So when you come to pole divas
15:09or think about it,
15:10I think one of my most commonly asked questions is,
15:13I just need to get strong or fit before I start.
15:15But I always say the hardest thing
15:17is opening the front door
15:18because once you get in here,
15:20everything's quite easy from there.
15:22Yeah, so it's fitness in a fun way.
15:24We have fun lights, cool music.
15:27So you almost feel like you're entering
15:29this nightclub environment
15:30to do your exercise class.
15:33I always get alerted of some people
15:35that the girls really gel to straight away.
15:38And I'd heard all about Nicole
15:40through her vibrant personality
15:42and a vibe that she brings to the studio
15:45and including everyone immediately.
15:48I feel like things just work out for me.
15:51And I feel like this future,
15:54the future here and at TCB,
15:56it's only going to get bigger and better.
15:58And I'm excited about it
16:00because Don's excited about it
16:02and he's investing in it,
16:03continuously investing in it.
16:05And the stuff that we are now producing
16:08is, you know, it's first off,
16:11first kind, we've done stuff
16:13that I've never seen before,
16:15which, you know, maybe it has been done,
16:16but it's new to me and it looks good.
16:18So I'm hoping that we'll be able
16:20to replicate stuff and open up a store
16:22and there are plans for all kinds of things.
16:34Next up, TCB operates 24-7, 365 days a year.
16:40We catch up with Shannon, Operations Manager,
16:43as a last-minute, urgent delivery comes in.
16:45Can you imagine winning the bike of your dreams?
16:54Cam from Snaz, we love giving away
16:56dirt bikes and motorsport gear.
16:58So go to snaz.com.au
16:59or scan the QR code in the corner of the screen
17:02and check out some of our crazy, crazy giveaways.
17:15My role here at TCB is Operations Manager.
17:27Essentially, I run all the daily bookings
17:29for both local and interstate jobs.
17:32They're travelling 24-7 here.
17:34So essentially, you know,
17:35I could get a call at any time of the day,
17:37very early in the morning, very late at night.
17:39We find out what the job is,
17:42where it's going, what trailer they might need
17:44and essentially, it's just trying to manage
17:47what equipment we have,
17:48what drivers we have available
17:49and where we can send them out.
17:51So, for example, if I've got a customer calls,
17:54they've got some concrete panels,
17:56we look at the sizing,
17:57we suit a trailer with an available frame,
18:00we get them to go load,
18:01we get them to go out,
18:03we manage them via tracking
18:04and essentially phone calls throughout the day.
18:06We've got live tracking in all of our trucks.
18:08So at any point of the day,
18:10I can see where they are, where they're travelling.
18:12If I see that they're maybe not
18:13where they're supposed to be
18:15or there's dramas,
18:16I can give them a call,
18:17find out if there's issues with trucks
18:18or issues on site.
18:20My phone's always on all day long.
18:22I get many phone calls,
18:23so it's just sort of managing it as it comes.
18:27Hey, Bobby, how you going?
18:28Good, mate.
18:29Can you give me a guess?
18:30This truck's running hot.
18:32You're up in Donnybrook.
18:34Yep.
18:35I checked all the coolant
18:36and I've done all the oil
18:37and everything this morning.
18:38Yep.
18:39I've done everything I can,
18:40but right now I've got it over and over
18:42and it's only sitting up
18:43on about 100 where it's supposed to sit.
18:45But when I'm driving,
18:46the minute I put the accelerator up a hill,
18:49it just goes straight into the red.
18:51Yeah, okay.
18:51All right, he's in the workshop at the moment,
18:53so he should answer.
18:54Okay, thanks, mate.
18:55All right, thanks.
18:56Some common issues that can happen on site
18:58or throughout the day in general,
19:00you get broken down trucks,
19:02major, minor issues,
19:03might need a call out from our mechanic
19:05or sometimes the drivers
19:06just can fix it themselves
19:08and if you walk them through it,
19:09could be tyre punctures on the trailers
19:11or the trucks themselves.
19:13Sites could be flooded
19:14or when you get bad weather
19:16with the wind and rain,
19:18they can just get called off
19:19depending on who's managing it.
19:22So Maria is a wonderful boss and person.
19:26She looks after all of the accounts, HR,
19:29so whenever there's conflict between drivers
19:32and, you know,
19:32it's not something that I can particularly deal with myself
19:35if they get a bit too heated
19:36or there's issues like that,
19:37she's very good at just dissolving those problems.
19:40But both Don and Maria are wonderful people,
19:42great to work with
19:43and, you know,
19:44I wouldn't really be anywhere else.
19:45They're great here.
19:50Don is a very proud man
19:53when it comes to his business.
19:54He definitely advertises it very well
19:56in the state of his trucks.
19:58You know, he goes all out with his lights
19:59and the bling and the stainless.
20:02All of our drivers take care of their trucks very well
20:04and I think it really shows
20:06because the amount of calls we get to go,
20:08look, I saw your truck on the road,
20:10it looks unreal.
20:11And, you know,
20:12I think that speaks a lot of volume
20:13for TCB and Don and itself.
20:15When it comes to making our trucks
20:18and blinging them out,
20:19we've got Nicole down in Diesel Doctor
20:20and I think it's absolutely fabulous
20:22having another girl in there,
20:23you know, girl power.
20:24She does a fabulous job
20:25and she's so enthusiastic about it,
20:26she's so talented
20:27and I think having, you know,
20:29that woman on the force is just awesome
20:31and she's so proud of what she does
20:33and gets so excited
20:34and, you know,
20:35she'll call me down
20:35to come look at certain aspects of new trucks
20:38and it's just unreal to see
20:40the work that she can physically do.
20:42I mean, it's very different
20:43to what I do here in the office
20:44and it's awesome to see it come to life
20:47from her little ideas.
20:48I've got a brand new T360,
21:01beautiful beast of a truck.
21:03I'm very excited to have my way with it.
21:06Don comes in,
21:07he's got a big list
21:08and sometimes he knows what he wants
21:10and sometimes he's undecided
21:12but we walk around the truck
21:13and he just comes up with ideas
21:15as he goes along
21:16and so far we've got a little list
21:19of things that he wants done to it.
21:22I need to hide the text now
21:24because he keeps coming in
21:25and he keeps adding to it
21:27but it's all good fun
21:28and it's going to look great
21:29once it's done.
21:38So it is a brand new truck
21:40and obviously working with stainless steel
21:42we're going to try and add
21:43a little bit of shiny elements to it
21:45so it'll be a lot of tank skirts
21:47we've got lots of lights going in
21:50we've got grill designs
21:52it's all very custom made
21:54some new toolboxes
21:56some step lights
21:57you know, all of that stuff.
22:00Yeah, it gets the pinstriping done
22:01it really complements the stainless steel
22:04but it also makes all the trucks
22:06look like they all belong to the same people
22:08so yeah, it works well.
22:09I try to keep Don on a budget
22:22but that doesn't always work
22:24so at the moment
22:24I'm just purchasing some of the stuff
22:26and we're planning some stuff at the moment
22:28but I think the first thing
22:30that we're going to try and get done
22:31will be the tank skirts
22:32they are pretty simple and straightforward
22:34easy to get on
22:35and they have a big impact
22:36so at least that way
22:37then Don feels like
22:38there's lots of work getting done
22:40on his truck
22:41which there is
22:41but I've got a lot of trailer repairs to do
22:44so I'm out there welding
22:46welding up some toolboxes
22:48on the bottom of trailers.
22:49We're fortunate enough
23:01that we can make a lot of our own things
23:03in terms of
23:04we make our own brackets
23:05and supports
23:06for the stuff that we use on the trucks
23:08but there are a few things
23:10that we do need to buy in
23:11and there can be
23:12in excess of two or three weeks wait
23:14certain things like
23:15the reverse camera
23:16finding labour
23:17and people to come in
23:18and install that
23:19it takes time
23:21so we want to get this done
23:23as soon as possible
23:24because obviously the truck needs to be out earning money
23:26I'm used to Don changing his mind
23:30and to be fair
23:31it makes me excited as well
23:34I think I'm just as bad as him
23:35sometimes I come up with ideas
23:37and I'm like
23:38well I just want to make that work
23:39how do we make this work
23:41but Don's ideas give me ideas
23:43and it makes me want to be here even more
23:46up next we see Don's new truck build
24:06which is named increase the pressure
24:08and the pressure is on Lou
24:09to do a perfect job
24:11as the SAR hits the spray boot
24:12Hi I'm Colin

24:34we do a large range of tyres
24:35from the smallest lawnmower tyre
24:37right the way up to the largest earthmover tyre
24:39we do wheel alarmments
24:41we do batteries
24:41anytime you need any tyres
24:43just come and see us
24:44so this morning we're at Gleeson Cranes
25:03the SAR's here to get a makeover paint job
25:06so gonna start painting the chassis
25:09they're still preparing
25:09run a little bit behind
25:11but we'll get there
25:12so this SAR we bought at an auction
25:14I always had the vision of this truck
25:16to do it a full makeover
25:18get a full resto
25:19so a couple of ideas in my head
25:20so when I saw it
25:22I thought that's the one
25:23so we bought it
25:24purchased it
25:24brought it back to Danong
25:25stripped it
25:27now it's at the stage of painting
25:28so hopefully we'll get it out of here
25:30and start putting everything together
25:32so this truck here
25:35we thought we'd do
25:36a couple of things different
25:37so I've got a lot of parts
25:38coming from the US
25:38which will arrive soon
25:39and you know
25:40different things like
25:41bubble bars
25:42and have rams on it
25:44airbag front end
25:45just
25:46I don't want to give away
25:47too much at the moment
25:48but it'll be a little bit different
25:49Gleeson's has been operating
25:52in Australia for over 50 years
25:53they sell quality cranes
25:55at an affordable price
25:56they're the certified dealer
25:58of Zoom Lion
25:58Gleeson's started
25:59the machinery painting
26:00side of things
26:01because they found it hard
26:02to get cranes painted
26:03over this side of the city
26:04not many people have
26:06the kind of booth
26:07that we have
26:07big truck booth
26:08and truck places
26:10don't really do them
26:11they've got all their trucks
26:12they've got to worry about
26:13so we've decided
26:15to use machinery painting
26:16and anything that's a machine
26:18we can paint
26:19from forklifts
26:20to scissor lifts
26:21to your big 150 ton crane
26:23so today we're focusing
26:25on getting the chassis
26:26ready to paint
26:27so we mask off the airbags
26:28because they're rubber
26:30and the paint will just
26:31come off that
26:31and where the wheel nuts go
26:33because if the paint gets in there
26:34it might play with
26:35the strengthening of the wheel nut
26:37obviously mask off the cabin
26:38and then mask off anything
26:40that doesn't need to be painted
26:41so everything can go back
26:43together perfectly
26:43for this particular one
26:45we're doing a base coat
26:45so we'll cover the whole thing
26:47with the base
26:47the base red
26:48and then once that's all
26:49nice and done
26:50we'll use the clear
26:51to let it all pop up
26:53and shine
26:53and that takes care
26:54of most of the paint work
26:55you know
26:56getting the colour on
26:57is easy
26:57but getting the clear coat
26:59that's the tricky part
27:00luckily we know
27:01what we're doing
27:01for a bloke like Donnie
27:03and the company
27:03we've got to make sure
27:05that everything is perfect
27:06because he's got
27:07a name to uphold
27:08and we want to make sure
27:10that he doesn't get
27:11discredited for something
27:13that looks crappy
27:14in a way
27:14so we've got to make
27:16it look perfect
27:17and do everything
27:18in our power
27:19to make it schmick
27:20with the chassis
27:22we've got here
27:22there's all the hoses
27:24all the lines
27:25underneath
27:25and make sure
27:27you're getting everywhere
27:28and it's going to take
27:30probably about
27:31four and a half hours
27:32to paint that chassis
27:32by myself
27:33getting in all the weird
27:34spots that you can't
27:35really get to
27:36it's a very fine art
27:38in a way
27:38for Donnie
27:39I'd love to help out
27:40a bloke like that
27:41with such a massive company
27:42TCB you know
27:43we take care of business
27:44I want to get this done
27:45for him
27:45and hopefully Lou
27:46will be back
27:47to paint the cab
27:48if not
27:49it'll probably be up
27:50to me again
27:50so I'll have to
27:51pull up my A game again
27:52we've pulled Don's
28:01SAR apart
28:02taken all the accessories
28:04off
28:04all the hardware
28:05that doesn't get painted
28:06we've done some repairs
28:08got it all in primer
28:10rubbed all the primer
28:11and we're just about ready
28:12to put some colour on it
28:14we've gone clear over base
28:20once it's ball primed
28:22and rubbed
28:23we lay the colour on
28:24and then we put
28:25the clear coat over the top
28:27which gives it
28:27its gloss
28:28and hopefully
28:29it'll look a million dollars
28:31like Don's fleet
28:32we put four coats of colour
28:34and we put about
28:35three coats of clear on it
28:37it'll last as long
28:38as Don looks after it
28:39I actually
28:40yeah I'm a classic car guy
28:42but I actually started
28:42my apprenticeship on trucks
28:44I've done ten years of it
28:45before I went into the cars
28:47I just love doing them
28:48striping and all that
28:50it is a bit of a challenge
28:52getting around them
28:53but with all the scaffolding
28:55other than that
28:56we're pretty right
28:57the truck has come up
28:58a million dollars
28:59Don will be wrapped
29:00when he sees it
29:01and he'll be itching
29:03to get it on the road
29:04coming up
29:10we take delivery
29:11on the Kenworth T360
29:13from Hallam Truck Centre
29:14of course
29:15Don has big plans
29:16for this new addition
29:17to the Selection Steel fleet

30:21from Hare and Forbes
30:22machinery house
30:23it's not just a sale
30:25it's a partnership
30:26so currently I have a T360
30:48it's one of Don's new trucks
30:51that he's got
30:52we've got a lot of things to do on it
30:55when it's finished
30:55it's going to be a head turner
30:57I'm very excited
30:57to sort of see that end product
30:59I'm more excited
31:00to be a part of this process
31:02starting from the back
31:04of the truck
31:04well I've put some lighting
31:05in behind the TCB
31:07because obviously
31:07Don loves lights
31:08lights
31:09I think lights
31:10make a truck shine
31:11so we've got a little bit
31:13of lighting going in
31:14so at the very end
31:16of the process
31:16of putting these covers
31:18on the back of this bar
31:19we've done our welding
31:20we've installed our lights
31:23Jake you want to come
31:24and give me a hand
31:25we'll do the nuts up
31:28just so that the button's
31:29at the bottom
31:29Don is so particular
31:33about what he wants
31:34on these trucks
31:35I have a lot of templates
31:36so I can understand
31:38and get into his mind
31:39what it is that he wants
31:40exactly
31:41so I can then get
31:43his perspective
31:44on the overall outcome
31:46so these are the templates
31:47that I showed Don
31:48when we were deciding
31:50on which tank skirts
31:51to go with
31:52for this particular tank
31:53he decided on this design
31:56however it was quite
31:58a chunky look
31:59so we did seam line it
32:01a little bit
32:02you'll see that
32:03this is the skirt
32:04that we've made
32:04which is a little bit
32:07more simple
32:08than this larger one here
32:11but when it's actually on
32:12it looks
32:13once it's got its lights
32:15it looks like
32:16it's supposed to be there
32:17and that was Don's vision
32:19for this the whole time
32:20so these are the step trims
32:23for the driver's side
32:25normally with the step trims
32:27you just have them
32:28sitting underneath the step
32:29itself
32:30with a roll of lights
32:31but Don wanted to be unique
32:33and a little bit different
32:35so
32:35the step trims
32:37that I've made here
32:39will fit there
32:41but you've noticed
32:42that there's a cutout
32:43and a notch
32:43so that it actually aligns
32:44with the end
32:45of the step itself
32:47which is a nice little
32:48a nice little look
32:49a nice little feature
32:50on both sides
32:51the second step though
32:53Don wanted to
32:55carry the arch
32:57of the mud guard
32:59so we've
33:00designed it
33:02that'll fit in there
33:04and it's notched out
33:06so that it actually fits
33:07within sort of
33:09four or five mil
33:10of the wheel arch itself
33:12there's no movement here
33:13so we're pretty safe
33:14in terms of the functionality
33:15of it
33:16but it looks good
33:17the top step
33:19he also wanted to
33:20make sure that it fit
33:21with the wheel arch
33:22this is where I was
33:23a little bit sceptical
33:24I didn't know
33:25if this was going to look
33:26any good
33:27I just went through
33:28with the design process
33:30it's one of those things
33:31trial and error
33:32to make it fit
33:33we're in the same scenario
33:34we're about four mil
33:36off the mud guard there
33:37we're sitting flush
33:38on the step
33:39and I think it looks
33:40amazing
33:41so at the front of the truck
33:43we've got a swing plate
33:44with some TCB mud flaps
33:46that have gone in
33:47as well
33:47we've got a custom
33:49design grill
33:49that's being put in
33:50that's going to have
33:51lighting that shines
33:52in and around it
33:53same with the two grills
33:54on the side of the bonnet
33:56they're going to have
33:56the same lighting
33:57and the same effects
33:58going through
33:58we're going to do
33:59an underglow
34:00throughout the whole
34:01body of the truck
34:03got a new toolbox
34:04going in
34:05we've got pearl craft
34:07coming and doing some
34:08you know changing
34:09the grab handles
34:10and just doing
34:11some modifications
34:11to the inside
34:12of the truck
34:13so as much as
34:14I just do fabrication
34:15I also sort of
34:17project manage
34:18these things for Don
34:19as well
34:19so I've managed
34:20the stacks
34:22I've brought in
34:23the visors
34:24I've brought in
34:25there's just bug deflector
34:26all those things
34:27which you know
34:29I don't make
34:29I don't need to make
34:30that you know
34:31I just manage for Don
34:32I'm also very particular
34:39I like things to be
34:40done properly
34:41if I've got a roll of lights
34:42I like them to be in line
34:44I like to use button heads
34:45throughout
34:46so there's just a few
34:47little bits and pieces
34:48where I think I pay
34:49attention to detail
34:50but it might take me
34:51a little bit longer
34:52but this is why I'm more
34:53excited about this truck
34:54as well
34:54because I know it's all me
34:56there's long lonely days
34:58in this shop
34:59we need welders
35:00obviously
35:00we really do need welders
35:02but if you're interested
35:03come and have a play
35:06in the shop
35:06I mean you won't be upset
35:07the stuff that we have here
35:09is amazing
35:10so much fun
35:11coming up
35:18proud CFMEU member
35:19Tanya Bodzik
35:20gives us a personal tour
35:22on her building site
35:23and shows us
35:24what it takes
35:25so every worker
35:26can go home safe
35:27so my day starts
35:41basically from about
35:423.50am
35:43is when the alarm
35:43goes off
35:44for me personally
35:46from the very beginning
35:47like when I went
35:48through my divorce
35:49and things
35:49I was into exercise
35:50and I think that
35:51was a real stress reliever
35:52for me
35:53so I'm very much
35:55about routine
35:56routine keeps me on track
35:58it keeps my mental health right
35:59it keeps my physical ability
36:01to be my role
36:04it all comes back to that
36:06so I start at 3.50
36:07alarm goes off
36:08wake up
36:09quick shower
36:10head straight to the gym
36:12or if I'm running late
36:14I train at home
36:15so I have everything
36:15I need at home
36:16do my quick
36:17quick workout
36:18and that makes me feel
36:20that kick starts my day
36:22I feel like rocky after that
36:23shower
36:23come downstairs
36:25make my kids lunches
36:26fresh every morning
36:27I always said to myself
36:28I don't like eating
36:29a soggy sandwich
36:30from the night before
36:30so I make that fresh
36:31leave home from work
36:33probably about 5 o'clock
36:34in the morning
36:34get to work by 6
36:36have my first coffee
36:37and then head out
36:39into the job site
36:41and make sure
36:41I do my walk
36:42before all my members
36:43head out on site
36:44my three boys
36:46so Mike and Tommy
36:47are twins
36:47they're 12
36:48Jake's just turned 14
36:50sometimes turning 40
36:51they're very self-sufficient now
36:53but I've taught them
36:54to be that way
36:55so I have had a carer
36:57a nanny since they were 5
36:58so overall in the last 7
37:00nearly 8 years
37:01I've spent about $50,000
37:03on carers
37:04which I think
37:05for me
37:06I'd spend 100 times more
37:08if I am in the position
37:09that I am today
37:10so now that they're at this age
37:12yes it is a bit frustrating
37:14when they do fry eggs
37:15and splash oil
37:16over my splash back
37:17but I let them go
37:18because it teaches them
37:20to be independent
37:21so now they catch the school bus
37:23I've finally gotten to the stage
37:25where I don't have to have a nanny
37:27I don't have to have anyone
37:28taking them to school
37:29they catch the bus now
37:30which is at the end of my street
37:31and then they catch the bus home
37:33so it's such a reliever
37:36stress reliever
37:37knowing that I don't have to
37:40I don't have to rely on anyone anymore
37:42one of the great things
37:44about being a CFMU member
37:46is our training unit
37:47we have a number amount of courses
37:50that you can choose from
37:52to do and be whatever you want to be
37:54and that's all through our CFMU training unit
37:57and it's an excellent place for you to learn
37:59to do a number of courses
38:02whatever you choose to do
38:03I'm still going to progress this year
38:04and do a few more courses
38:05so if you are one of our members
38:07a CFMU member
38:08you can choose a course from there
38:11and go on from there
38:12and you can have as many tickets as you like
38:14so you need your white card to work on site
38:16so once you've got your white card
38:18you can progress from there
38:20I've did a number amount of courses
38:22just to learn
38:23you know education and knowledge is the key
38:26so to educate myself
38:27and I mean it is quite hard to
38:29you know
38:30all these years later
38:32going back to school and learning
38:33but our training unit is
38:34it's excellent
38:35the teachers are fantastic there
38:37so they make things easy for you to learn
38:39and it's a great thing to have behind you
38:41it's not just having your white card
38:43you know getting your traffic ticket
38:45you know your Alimac ticket
38:46your first aid ticket
38:48all these tickets
38:50the more tickets you have
38:51the more employable that you are
38:53and it benefits yourself
38:54for your resume
38:55into anything that you want to be
38:57sometimes people come into the union office
39:01and ask for
39:02look I want to get a job
39:04some it's through who you know
39:05someone knows someone
39:06how did you get me a job
39:07we're going to have a women's support centre
39:09in the building that's been built next door
39:10because what we've realised
39:11is a lot of women that want to get in the industry
39:13unless they know someone
39:14how do they do it
39:15so they're going to be able to go
39:16to the women's support centre
39:18and put their names in and say
39:19look I'm so and so
39:20I'd like to have a career in the building industry
39:22we've got clauses in our EBA
39:24for job sharing
39:25so a woman whose kids are already grown up
39:27can start early in the morning
39:29and the other woman can then
39:31still get up
39:32get her kids dressed
39:33take them to school
39:34and then go to work
39:35you know
39:35because there's a lot of aftercare centres at school
39:37not many before care centres
39:38so we've done that clause in there
39:40for more women
39:41to make it accessible for them
39:42to start their career in a building site
39:44and they can become
39:45you know we've got women as crane drivers
39:46we've got them working as doggies
39:48forklift drivers
39:49driving the alley mac
39:50shop stewards
39:51anything a man can do
39:53the woman can do
39:53and in a lot of cases better
39:55so my current role
40:05is a health and safety representative
40:07on site
40:08so I look after all my members
40:10make sure all the health and safety needs are met
40:13making sure I walk my job
40:14making sure it's safe
40:16making sure that everyone goes home
40:17at the end of the day
40:18is very important to me
40:19I'm very protective of my members
40:21I'm the first person on site
40:23before anyone starts
40:24I like to do my walk
40:26and make sure that the job is safe
40:27and I'm the last person to leave
40:29so I check every corner
40:31make sure there's no one left in my job
40:32before I leave the building
40:34the most things that I encounter
40:37on a day to day basis
40:38with being a health and safety representative
40:41people do get complacent
40:42so it's very important
40:43that I'm constantly walking my job
40:45and picking up these things
40:47because people forget
40:48they're in a rush
40:49they're being pushed
40:51to hurry up and finish the job
40:52they need to just take a step back
40:54and think before they act
40:56about you know
40:57potentially causing harm
40:59not only to themselves
41:00but to their you know
41:01their co-workers around them
41:03so it's very important
41:04that I walk my job
41:06and make sure that I remind
41:07each and every one of them
41:08you know
41:09the standards that we set on site
41:11so I make sure that
41:12I'm constantly walking around
41:14you know every morning
41:15I greet my members
41:16you know
41:17majority know them mostly by name
41:19so they're aware that
41:21you know
41:21I am always around
41:22they can always come to me
41:23for anything
41:24making sure that your members
41:31see you walking the job
41:33they know that you're walking the job
41:35and having that relationship
41:37you build that relationship
41:38over time
41:39so it's great being at
41:40on my job from the very beginning
41:42till now to the end
41:43so I form that relationship with them
41:45so no one gets upset
41:46when I say
41:47oh can you put your helmet on
41:48or can you do this
41:49or have you done that
41:50there's not one person on site
41:52that I've had an argument with
41:54or they've you know
41:56gotten upset about
41:57not being told to be safe
41:59the usual building site works
42:01four ten hour days
42:02and two eight hour days
42:04so a total of 56 hours a week
42:06that takes it out of you
42:08and the rewards are many
42:10especially now that
42:10we have double time
42:12for all overtime
42:12so our members enjoy that
42:15and what that does is
42:16that also creates
42:17makes the job go a lot quicker
42:19and therefore the developer is happier
42:21he gets his building on time
42:23a lot quicker than he would have normally
42:25and so everyone's happy
42:26the rewards of being in this industry is
42:29yes you work very long hours
42:32but it's rewarding
42:33we work hard as construction workers
42:35you know some people think otherwise
42:37but I work nearly 60 hours a week
42:39sometimes if not more
42:4060 hours a week
42:42and having your home life
42:43the rewards are
42:44you're getting your wage every week
42:46and if it wasn't for this industry
42:48being part of this industry
42:50I wouldn't own a home
42:51you know I wouldn't be providing
42:53for my three kids
42:54the industry has given me all that
42:56and it's got your back
42:57you work hard
42:58it doesn't go unnoticed
43:00and I knew that if I worked hard
43:01in this industry
43:02and yes I got a kickstart
43:04from my brother
43:04but I knew if I worked hard
43:06I want to be known for
43:07my hard work ethic
43:08and I knew that if I worked hard
43:11that I would get somewhere
43:12and I didn't stop
43:13I didn't quit
43:14there was a lot of setbacks
43:16yes but I just kept moving forward
43:17to being in the position
43:18where I am today
43:19and I've said it before
43:21I feel like I've won Tats Lotto
43:22I've finally worked hard
43:24and it's been recognised
43:25as to where I am today in life
