00:00Today on Rides Down Under,
00:29other Aussie truckers, Don and Maria head to Fretesura Club to celebrate their Italian
00:35heritage.
00:36Glen and the boys from MCG disassemble the crane from the top of the CFMEU Wellness Centre.
00:42We head to Eureka garages and sheds with a load from Selection Steel.
00:46The boys from the CFMEU give us an up-close tour of the East-West Big Bill.
00:53Next up, pep heads to Tokemoor to hook up the first AB Triple for TCB Trans for an urgent
01:00delivery straight up to Queensland.
01:02So today's plan is what I am led to believe is a first for the Melbourne Division of TCB,
01:17and that is we run an AB Triple from the New South Wales border at Tokemoor right through
01:23to the Gatton Pads in Queensland.
01:26That's the plan for today.
01:27At this stage we're in preparation, getting everything right, make sure all the gear's
01:31there and everything's right to go.
01:34It's not just preparation in this instance, it's preparation right across the board.
01:38There's nothing worse than getting the site or somewhere where you need to be and you
01:42open the toolbox or something's not quite right with the equipment that you're moving around
01:47and you haven't got enough gear to do the job.
01:49It's critical at every point in the loading process before you depart to make sure that
01:54you've got everything and everything works properly.
01:58The boys are just finishing off a few little minor details that need to be done.
02:02Once they're finished there, I'll just double check to make sure that I'm happy with everything
02:06and make sure it's right.
02:08We'll put the B-Double combination together, which I will take out to Somerton.
02:12From that point there we will load that particular back trailer of the B-Double with Clifton's
02:18Productions and the other trailer, the third trailer, one of our other drivers, he will
02:23run that out there.
02:24We will load it and at which point then we'll travel through to Tokemoor where he'll then
02:29uncouple from that one, which has the dolly attached to it, and then we'll hook the whole
02:34three fathers together there in Tokemoor.
02:49It's a privilege for me to be able to undertake this.
02:52It's the first time out of the Melbourne division that we've elected to run this type of combination,
02:59but in the past there's been restrictions on the Newell Highway, so we can't run this
03:04particular combination from here in Melbourne out to the New South Wales border at Tokemoor,
03:11so therefore we need other strategies, which is then we need a second truck then to take
03:15the third trailer and he then comes out to Tokemoor where it all gets put together and
03:21then from that point forward right through to Gatton.
03:24It is full road train route now and they've opened it up where you don't need to have
03:30the permit or be under a PBS or HML system.
03:54Trailer configuration is an important part, there's no point in trying to run this type
04:14of particular setup if you don't have the right equipment to start with, because there
04:18are the rules and regulations that you have to abide by as far as the National Heavy Vehicle
04:23regulator is concerned and a few other bits and pieces, so combination matching is an
04:29integral part of what you need to do.
04:32There's also length issues, there's weight issues, so you've got to make sure that you
04:36conform right across the board.
04:41It's a critical point to make sure that you have everything in place.
04:48Dot your I's, cross your T's, make sure that the equipment you want to use is right for
04:53the tasks that you want to undertake and then it's just a build process from there to make
04:58sure everything flows evenly.
05:00There are those unexpected things that sometimes just happen that you don't foresee.
05:05You try to plan for everything, but it's not always the case.
05:17I believe Lisa's going to be part of what's going on today, although she'll have her own
05:21load.
05:22We will catch up with her at some stage out there as well.
05:24I have to credit Donnie and TCB.
05:27We both understand how freight moves and it's not always that we get that opportunity where
05:33we can travel not only as a company team, but also as partners.
05:37It's one of those blessed things and to Donnie's credit and some of the other allocators that
05:42have been in the role of allocations, they've all done the same thing, where the opportunity
05:48presents and they can do it and it works fine, then yeah, we sort of travel a bit together.
05:53There are times where we don't travel together for weeks or more on end, it's just the way
05:58transport is.
05:59Coming up, Kev arrives at Tokemoor NSW at dusk to hook up the first ever AB triple from TCB Trans.
06:27From there, he's heading straight up north to Gilgandra.
06:36We have some great merchandise here.
06:38In fact, it's trucking good.
06:40See what I did there?
06:41Yeah, it's pretty smart.
06:43We have t-shirts, we have hoodies, we have bar mats, caps, special trucks were built over
06:48the years.
06:49I guess that you've also got the Italian themed one showcasing your heritage, how cool
06:53is that?
06:54I absolutely love it.
06:55Plus, like you said, every size possible and I like an oversized hoodie and I was lucky enough
07:01for Don to actually give me one.
07:02Did I?
07:03Yes.
07:04So we give these tasks to Kev, it's our first AB triple for TCB, so he's more of an experienced
07:20driver and he's up for the task, so he wants to do it.
07:23Let's see how he goes.
07:24So AB triple is a certain length, so we have to go to Tokemoor to hook them all up because
07:29at the moment we're not allowed to hook them up in Victoria.
07:32So we just cross over the border, hook up all the trailers there and we head up north
07:37to Queensland.
07:38So Kev will be taking his regular truck that he drives which he's burning in love and that's
07:42all raided to do this task.
07:45We've come out of Melbourne yesterday afternoon, so we've just pulled up here and we'll go around,
07:51we'll do a few things that we need to do now, just double check everything, make sure it's
07:54all right, check tyres, just do the general basic stuff before we make a move again.
07:58It is essentially three trailers, yes, it's a B double combination hooked up with another
08:04trailer and a dolly.
08:05Brake time just depends, sometimes you might only go a couple of hours up the road and
08:09you just think, you know what, I need to get out for 15 minutes and just go and have
08:13a cold drink or, you know, just get out of the truck in essence.
08:17The target from here will be Gilgandra, at which point that's where I believe I'll be
08:21doing a changeover with one of our Brisbane drivers and then he'll take it from there
08:25on forward into Brisbane.
08:29This is the longer combination that I've driven with Don.
08:33I've done other normal road trains, just the two trailers and a dolly, but this is a first
08:38for me as an AB triple.
08:41And it's been an experience but it's also been quite delightful and it's quite surprising
08:46how it actually handles and it does handle very well.
08:49I've got a K200 with a 600 Cummins in it.
08:55It seems to be coping fairly well, but at the same token we're not overly heavy either,
09:00so we're really not pushing the truck to its limits.
09:03As time goes by and we'll check the performance and see how it goes and determine what we
09:08do with it from there, but at this stage it seems to be performing quite well.
09:14With any freight, most times the freight will settle in transit.
09:18You sort of get into that habit where, you know, a couple of times throughout your trip
09:22you'll just get out of the truck and, like I said, sometimes when you just get out of
09:26it you just do a general walk around and just check all your restraint.
09:30Make sure nothing's moved, make sure nothing's come off the trailer, make sure there's nothing
09:34hanging out where it shouldn't be.
09:36Just do a general visual and just check over things.
09:42If you ask Don, it'll be Don will tell you that Lisa's making sure, right, she's giving
09:46me a little bit of a push along.
09:48So, yeah, she come out of Melbourne late yesterday afternoon and it was actually about Bunjool
09:56the rest area out of Durildry last night that she actually caught up with me there.
10:00So, yeah, and, you know, where we can we travel together, other times we can't and that's
10:06the way it is and we understand that.
10:08You've still got to maintain all your regulations and standards and your rest breaks, regardless
10:17of what you're doing.
10:18So, you know, it was time last night, you know, at 3am in the morning that it's enough
10:24for the day and it's time to go to bed.
10:26So, you know, it works out that, you know, seven hours later or eight hours later, whichever
10:30it goes, just depends what breaks you have throughout the day and then you can move again
10:34from there.
10:37You do have to change your drive line.
10:39It's not like a standard road train or a B double or a single.
10:42You do have to change that drive line in order to make sure, although things twist in the
10:47middle, you've still got to make sure that when you're going around your corners, you're
10:51not going to be running over islands and hitting traffic lights and all that sort of thing.
10:55So, it's, yeah, it's a different thing.
10:58No, no, no, there's no cameras there, nothing down the side, nothing to give you a visual inside
11:03the cab.
11:04It's all done by your own eye out mirrors and, you know, just, just keeping a general
11:10eye on, on where you're tracking.
11:12Again, other things, you know, I mean, yes, it's, it's long as an AB, AB triple combination.
11:19You're always on the look, regardless of whether it's an AB triple or it's a single or a B double.
11:24You're always looking out for what's in front of you, what's behind you, what's trying to
11:29come beside you to overtake.
11:32Sometimes you'll get into a position, you know, where you need to, you need to actually
11:35use a little bit more of the road to make a turn.
11:37You've got to make sure that no one's coming up on your blind side there at the left side
11:41and wants to try and, you know, get around you.
11:44So, there's lots of different things you always got to look out for.
11:47We've come out of West Wyalong this morning.
11:50We've just arrived here at Gilgandra.
11:52Let me tell you, it's, it's been fairly warm all the way out and you notice that as soon
11:56as you get out, it's nearly 40 degrees here in Gilgandra.
11:58At this point now, that's, that's pretty much me for, for the day and for the next 24 hours.
12:04Lisa's off doing her changeover with the Brisbane driver and she'll be on hers as well.
12:10So from that point, everything's travelled quite well.
12:12I'm happy with the way everything's going, the truck's going fine, so we just now wait
12:16and see for, for the next leg of the journey and, and find out what goes on from there.
12:33Next up, Don and Maria head to Fritz Azura Club to celebrate their Italian heritage.
12:42Here in Forbes Machinery House are your Aussie-owned one-stop shop for everything workshop machinery.

13:35Our staff are trade qualified and can provide you with the right advice.
13:39When you purchase a machine from Hare and Forbes Machinery House, it's not just a sale, it's a partnership.
13:45So Jess, what are we doing here today?
13:57We're here for the Festival for the Republic of the Italian community.
14:03So we're just celebrating at the Fred Pizzura Club in Brayside.
14:06Just putting together the community.
14:08So we've got grid cards, put a few knick-knacky things inside, little bits and pieces of earrings,
14:13musical instruments as well, traditional ones.
14:16And then why not bring TCB along and that's for the line.
14:19So what's your reasons for, you think, bringing all these people together?
14:23Mostly passing it forward to the next generation.
14:26Me, my future kids or anyone around my age as well.
14:30Keeping those traditions, making the sauce, the pasta, the salami.
14:34Putting all of that together and just, yeah, keeping it forward.
14:37Today we're celebrating the Festa della Repubblica.
14:39Effectively, it's Tiddly's Independence Day.
14:42Many years ago, they decided they didn't want to be part of the monarchy or part of the fascist regime.
14:47So they voted to be a republic.
14:49And that's what today's celebrating.
14:51June 2, every year, the Italians celebrate this event.
14:54So today is the first time we've ever run this at this club.
14:57Our amazing events manager, Josie, put upon her own shoulders to put this together
15:01and it's, you know, blown us out of the water.
15:033,000 people through the gate throughout the day.
15:06Wow.
15:07It's been a fantastic event for us.
15:08And we thank people from, you know, TCB, you guys, Brutalab and a lot of our other collaborators.
15:13Without you guys, it wouldn't have happened today.
15:15So we really thank you guys for all your support.
15:17I appreciate that.
15:18Just looking around, all the people eating, drinking, dancing.
15:22It's what Italians do best.
15:23It's amazing.
15:24We love eating.
15:25The music's been fantastic.
15:26And there's still people coming in.
15:27So it's proven to be a fantastic event for us.
15:29So it's right here, as you know, the Italians cook probably the best food in the world.
15:40So a few of the stands we've got here is Zippoli, Pizza, Arangini.
15:45How can he go wrong?
15:46So my name's Aaron and I'm Mr. Zippoli, which is my business.
15:51It's authentic Italian doughnuts.
15:53We call them Zippoli.
15:54So we're here with my parents and one of my cousins.
15:57So, yeah, we're just bringing the flavour of Italy and a unique dessert, which you don't
16:02see much around in Melbourne.
16:03One of the first to do it.
16:04Thought I'd bring it along and let everyone enjoy it.
16:07That's good.
16:12So, Paul, I must admit, I tried the doughnuts over there.
16:15They were pretty good.
16:16Yep.
16:17How's your cannoli stack up?
16:18Well, I think they speak for themselves.
16:20I bring them down here to show people what real cannoli I like.
16:23They're not filled fresh.
16:24They're not real, you know?
16:25And try them.
16:26You tell me.
16:27Don't worry.
16:28I will try them.
16:29Don't worry about that.
16:30I see you're hand-making all of them.
16:31That's unbelievable, isn't it?
16:32Everything you take from the scratch.
16:33Otherwise, I've got too much pride.
16:35That's my problem.
16:36I don't make everything from scratch.
16:37I wouldn't sell it.
16:38That is good.
16:39Yeah?
16:40Paul, well done, mate.
16:42Yeah, well, it's pretty good.
16:44I can't complain.
16:59It's just...
17:00It's a cuisine that's now all over the world.
17:02Everyone's claiming this one now.
17:03French crepes, Japanese crepes.
17:05I did crepes.
17:06I did crepes.
17:07Yes.
17:08Crepes for everybody.
17:09Beautiful.
17:10I've been walking around, taste North food.
17:11I come past your stand.
17:12Couldn't say no.
17:13Good on you, mate.
17:14That's wonderful.
17:15So how did all this generate?
17:18Just from the Parkville Shopping Centre and meeting Maria from the trucks, the news
17:24guys.
17:25Yep.
17:26That's wonderful.
17:27That's wonderful.
17:28She invited me along.
17:29My daughter fell in love with our strawberries and chocolate.
17:30Love of cups.
17:31Strawberries and chocolate.
17:32And that was it.
17:33So we've been thankfully and gratefully claimed by the Italian community.
17:37Oh, beautiful.
17:38I appreciate it.
17:39Love it.
17:40And this is what we were talking about before.
17:41All local business.
17:42Parkmore just up the road.
17:43And it brings everyone together, doesn't it?
17:45And look, I cannot...
17:46I come from a small town called Pork Ferry.
17:48Sure.
17:49I come to Melbourne, been in Melbourne for five years and I was just like, I felt like
17:54I'm home.
17:55The community at the Parkmore is just, and in Keesborough, this whole area is just amazing.
18:00Really great community.
18:02Good luck.
18:03Thanks, guys.
18:04Wow.
18:05Look at this.
18:06Gold.
18:07Well done.
18:14So, Michelle, change street food.
18:16Tell me a little bit about yourself.
18:17Uh, so I'm Australian born.
18:19Yep.
18:20Up in Ceze background.
18:21Yep.
18:22Uh, and today, or at all our events, we do arroz di cini, the lamb skewers.
18:25Yep.
18:26And then we have crumb chicken and spicy pork, benzo di cina.
18:29Good.
18:30Uh, so we get out of the, get out of the restaurant and out into the open.
18:33So where's the restaurant?
18:34Promote that, come on.
18:35Epi.
18:36Epi.
18:37It's in Epi, Victoria.
18:38Uh, we're very happy, very proud of our, our Ceze culture.
18:41So we opened up a restaurant.
18:42And it's, uh, in Taran Drive, Epi.
18:45And we do breakfast and lunch, Monday to Saturday, and Friday, Saturday dinner.
18:49So, you're a team background, obviously, you just said?
18:52Yep.
18:53So you're just bringing up the next tradition here, or?
18:55Yeah.
18:56I'm hoping I can pass it on to the kids, at least the nephews, to be honest.
19:02Wow.
19:03Look at this.
19:04Oh, sorry.
19:06Look at this.
19:08How about with you?
19:09How well with me?
19:10Do we go?
19:11Chin-ching?
19:12Salute!
19:13The day was absolutely amazing.
19:15Uh, it started off overcast and it's like, is this gonna happen?
19:19Is the rain gonna hold back on us?
19:21Well, it was, it was nerve-wracking at first.
19:23So getting on, onto the back of the truck, our stage for the day, a few people saw, like,
19:27you could tell they were waiting for us to get on stage.
19:30No sooner that I was introduced and I opened my mouth, it was just like, you saw the flock
19:36of people coming in, it's like, uh-oh, here we go.
19:38And it was just a rollercoaster.
19:39It was really good.
19:40It was a great feeling.
19:42The atmosphere, on a perspective as an entertainer, was unbelievable, because you didn't just
19:47see the older generations, you saw a lot of younger kids there, obviously with their
19:51grandparents or young families.
19:53And to see the young people, you know, getting involved, as they say, with the older generation,
20:00it was amazing.
20:01The atmosphere of having them together in one at Frechadzudru, because obviously it was
20:06the first time they've done a festa there.
20:08It was like, and this side of Melbourne, it was, it was awesome.
20:15We've brought down some trucks.
20:16We've got the, uh, first one we've got is the 404, and then we've got the G-Cab and
20:21the 909 and the one on the stage for the, uh, the band today.
20:24Uh, it's been a great turnout.
20:26A lot of people will be showing up and a lot of people here.
20:28And, um, yeah, it's really good for the company and good for everyone else.
20:32So Jess, we've got a special surprise with the trucks today.
20:35Can you tell us a bit about it?
20:36Uh, yes, so we've got a little surprise happening for everyone that's here today.
20:39Um, so basically we're going to light up the Italian flag, green, white and red.
20:43So we've got the three trucks parked at the front.
20:46We'll be right back, please.
20:49There's the four trucks this year.
20:52Coming up, the boys from MCG
21:18dismantled the crane from the top
21:20of the CFMEU Wellness Centre.
21:27Hi, I'm Colin.
21:29If you're looking for tyres, mechanical
21:30service or just general advice, come on down
21:32to Mooney Ponds Tyres. We offer a full range
21:34of servicing from tyres to
21:36brakes to all sorts of general mechanical
21:38repairs. Every vehicle will get an
21:40inspection to make sure the vehicle is safe.
21:42In terms of tyres, we do a large range
21:44of tyres from the smallest lawnmower tyre
21:46right the way up to the largest earth
21:48mover tyre. We do wheeler lummets, we do
21:50batteries. Any time you need any tyres
21:53just come and see us.
21:53We're at the training and wellness centre
22:12for the CFMEU and we have
22:14the boys from MCG
22:15Cranes dismantling the
22:18tower crane today. They basically
22:19come in, climb the crane
22:21take the boom down and then
22:23they take the top assembly down
22:25which consists of the cabin, the
22:27A-frame, the counterweights, the slew ring
22:29then they remove
22:31the tower sections of the crane out of
22:33the lift shaft. We've been around about
22:3516 years in various formats
22:37and today we boast
22:39about 47 tower cranes
22:41and probably about 25 mobile
22:43cranes. 8 or 9 semis
22:45and 3 or 4 rigid trucks.
22:47Today we've got the 350 tonner which is our
22:49biggest mobile crane. We've got the
22:5120 tonne franner there and the
22:53tower crane that we're dismantling is a
22:55Usita 186. First thing
22:57is the guys go up and they de-rope
22:59the crane, de-reave it, take the hook
23:01ropes off, they take the buffing
23:03jib rope off and then we start
23:05dismantling the crane with counterweights coming
23:07out first. This crane's got a 30 metre
23:09jib which we dismantled as a 30 metre
23:11section onto the ground. We then go
23:13A-frame, machine deck, cabin
23:15slew and then we take the towers out which is what we're
23:17doing at the moment. The counterweights weigh
23:192.5 tonne each, the jib come in
23:21at about 5.5, A-frame
23:23about 4 tonne, the machine deck
23:25is the heaviest lift at about 11 tonne
23:27and then we drop back down to
23:29cabin slew ring about 9 tonne
23:31and towers are coming in at 8 tonne each.
23:33The gold card rigger climbs the tower
23:43and dismantles the boom section
23:45and then the rest of the crane. They're amazing
23:47that is an extremely dangerous job
23:49that is high risk activity at its
23:51utmost. I'd say the biggest hazard
23:53is falling from height, so the guys are
23:55in harnesses all the time up the top there
23:57they're trained with height awareness
23:59and gold card riggers being that they're
24:01specialist tower crane erectors and dismantlers.
24:03Yeah, the guys have a full safety harness
24:05with a double lanyard, so the static lines
24:07outside any of the hand railed areas
24:09on the crane and any time they need to get
24:11outside that they'll have a double lanyard on too
24:13but we try to keep them inside and
24:15hand rails most of the time and it's only the
24:17critical stuff that they need to go out.
24:19But the guys are trained with the gotcha kit training
24:21they've got a height awareness ticket
24:23and they're gold card riggers too which means
24:25they're tower crane riggers. The other hazards
24:27we are lifting some heavy loads so
24:29chains are tested, all the lifting gears tested
24:31and kept up to date. The guys really do
24:33know what they're doing. They do this three or four times a week
24:35so for us it's a normal day
24:37for anybody else on site it's one
24:39out of the box. Yeah well the job site's been shut down
24:41so that in itself becomes an exclusion
24:43zone and of course the neighbouring building
24:45being the CFMEU is shut today as well
24:47so we've got a very very good exclusion zone.
24:49This is extremely high risk
24:51it's probably the highest risk activity
24:53that we do in the construction industry
24:55we have a 50 metre exclusion zone
24:57when we're taking off the boom and the top
24:59section of the tower crane
25:01then once we get to the tower section
25:03we have a 30 metre exclusion zone.
25:05A lot of the tower crane erection
25:07and dismantling has to be done out of hours
25:09simply because we would be unable to
25:11evacuate the building which is next door
25:13that's within the 50 metre exclusion zone
25:17so we have to do a lot of this high risk activity
25:19out of hours on a Sunday.
25:21MCG have gold card riggers
25:23truck drivers
25:25they have frana drivers
25:27and mobile crane drivers
25:29and they all work together as a team
25:31everybody has a specific task
25:33and they dismantle the crane
25:35it's an extremely well old machine.
25:37Yeah we've got about 5 trucks running today
25:39we've got 8 people on site today
25:41and we've got a team of guys in our yard today
25:43unloading as well
25:45so all up I think there's probably 15-16 people involved
25:47in today's activities.
25:49So obviously you come here
25:51the traffic control has set out
25:53a bit of an exclusion zone for us
25:55and you bring the 350 in as we did this morning
25:57the boys are up in the air
25:59you dereave the crane
26:01start getting the counterweight off
26:02then the jib comes out
26:03and so on and so forth
26:05and you've got the frana down here
26:07as a backup crane
26:08and to rotate all the pieces onto the truck
26:0990% of the pieces need to be rotated
26:11onto the trucks for transport
26:13because obviously they come down vertically
26:15and then they need to be horizontal
26:17pretty high risk work
26:19but we've all been doing it for a while
26:20so we sort of minimise those risks
26:22with some pretty experienced guys here
26:24Some of these components are extremely heavy
26:26we have the mobile crane
26:28the 350 tonne one
26:29which dismantles the tow crane
26:31then we have a smaller frana crane
26:33which is a pick and carry crane
26:35which loads a lot of the stuff onto the trucks
26:37Donna controls all the traffic
26:53she does a fantastic job
26:55and she does all the logistics
26:57organises all the trucks coming in and out
26:59works in a team and looks after the pedestrians
27:02and basically manages the traffic for us all day
27:05everybody's well organised and well trained
27:07and everybody has a specific role to do
27:09and it works
27:11MCG are fantastic
27:12they're a really sleek operation
27:14we've got a great team
27:15as I said the boys know what they're doing
27:17and we work together 3-4 days a week
27:19and there's a lot of planning that goes with it
27:20we work out how many trucks we need
27:22what truck's taking what
27:23where it's going
27:24so there's a bit more than what you sort of see
27:26just on site
27:27I guess everyone just gels pretty well
27:29that helps a lot
27:30there's a bit of camaraderie amongst the guys
27:32so I think everything sort of just works
27:34everyone gets along
27:35and sort of smashes the job out
27:37and gets it done
27:38so I think not a lot of other companies
27:39can pull the crane down as big as we do
27:41the next stage is
27:42once the crane comes out of the lift shaft
27:44we're able to get into the lift shaft
27:46and start to construct the lifts
27:48next up we head to Eureka garages and sheds
28:08where the boys pick up a load from Selection Steel
28:11Invisible Carbras are a paint protection film
28:19it's 0.2mm thick polyurethane
28:23with an adhesive on the back
28:25we computer cut it to suit each vehicle
28:27and then apply it
28:28I'd just finished repainting my 1968 Corvette
28:31I'd spent a lot of money on it
28:32and cried when I got a first chip in it
28:34so I decided I need some sort of protection
28:37we have patterns for most modern cars
28:40anything we don't have a pattern for
28:42we can create a set like we did for the VG
28:44resprays can cost somewhere between $10,000 and $100,000
28:48putting paint protection film on the paint to stop any chips
28:51is a very cost effective way of protecting the car
28:54you can find Invisible Carbras on the web
28:57www.invisiblecarbras.com.au
28:59or give us a call on 0382 888 1041
29:07TCB are essentially an extension of our team
29:20the drivers come in every morning
29:22they might as well be wearing a Selection Steel uniform
29:24and they do have the logo
29:25because they're in here bright and early
29:27they're good people
29:28they're like one of us
29:29they come in, check the loads, check the runs
29:32have a chat with everyone
29:34and the relationship we have with TCB is incredibly important
29:37because we pride ourselves on customer service
29:40and if a customer is in strife
29:43or just needs something urgently
29:45TCB are there to help us do that
29:47and without them coming in early
29:49and getting steel to a customer next day
29:51or getting something there urgent
29:53it would be difficult for us to deliver on that customer service
29:56that ultimately people love about Selection Steel
29:59that personalised level of service
30:01and the ability to be nimble and flexible
30:04and help them out in a time of need
30:06So our steel ends up in numerous applications
30:13it can be commercial ducting
30:16purlins for large commercial buildings
30:19truck parts, steel framing, roofing, cladding
30:24just about anything, you name it
30:26our steel is turned into
30:28we don't export any steel
30:30so all of our customers, manufacturers, fabricators
30:33roll formers, you name it
30:35they're all in Australia
30:36and they're all manufacturing for the Australian market
30:43Today we're at Selection Steel in Dandenong
30:45so we're picking up some coils today for Eureka in Labton
30:49good bunch of people
30:50and the procedure is good
30:51like you just come in and open your truck up
30:54and make yourself ready
30:55and the boys will come and load you
30:57and see what you're after
30:58you generally have paperwork to say
31:00where you're going
31:01and what customer
31:03Eureka's a garage company
31:05they make garages and sheds
31:07picked up I think 24 tonne for them today
31:107 coils
31:12yeah we've taken a load over there for them today
31:14hopefully they can do a bit of work for a change
31:17I've been driving for TCB for 7 years
31:21no I love it, I like it
31:23yeah, it's interesting everyday
31:25like you're going different places everyday
31:27and meeting different people
31:29and different conversations too
31:31you know when you get the time
31:32yeah, yeah it's interesting
31:34being steel it can slip
31:36it is dangerous if it's not restrained properly
31:39oh that's a Kenworth
31:52so strong enough for the job
31:54that's called a prairie wagon
31:56so it's got a steel frame inside
31:59which is like a concertina effect
32:01with a curtain over the top
32:03to protect it from the rain and any moisture
32:06yeah everything's loaded on the truck
32:08and we've checked the chains
32:09and everything like that
32:10they're all secured
32:11so we're ready to go and see the customer
32:13so Eureka garages and sheds have been established for 35 years
32:15so Eureka garages and sheds have been established for 35 years
32:20our range includes domestic and structural
32:21Eureka started from initially sourcing materials from other role forming companies to my very first
32:27role forming machine to my very first role forming machine
32:28and we've grown now to 11,000 square meter factory
32:30with no less than 20 role formers
32:31and we produce all the components to go into the company
32:33and we've grown now to 11,000 square meter factory
32:34with no less than 20 role formers
32:35and we produce all the components to go into our garages
32:36we have a complete from A to Z from the concept to the company
32:38and we've grown now to 11,000 square meter factory
32:42with no less than 20 role formers
32:44and we produce all the components to go into our garages
32:48we have complete from A to Z from the concept to engineering to mainly development by myself
32:54right through to role forming to pre-assembling and to the dispatch to the customers
33:00we have been doing this for 35 years and proud to do it
33:03and looking for the company
33:05I'm looking forward to the company
33:07and looking forward to the company
33:10and looking forward to the company
33:12and looking forward to the company
33:15for 35 years and proud to do it and looking forward to doing another 35 if time permits.
33:22A garage range is extensive, from garages to farm sheds to barns to two-storey garages
33:28to sleep outs, you name it. And we're a company that has grown to meet customer specific demands.
33:35We don't just sell our stock standard range, we customise for customers' needs. That's
33:40been, I guess, the secret of Eureka's success.
33:49So Selection Steel has been a long-time supply to Eureka garages and sheds. It's a company
33:54that we rely upon with their timely deliveries, competitive pricing and all-around nice guys
34:00to work with or to purchase from. So that's helped to make our business grow to what it
34:05is today. And we look forward to continuing our relationship with Selection Steel in the
34:11future. Being able to give the customer what they are required to blend in with their existing
34:15roof colours, etc. We offer the complete range of colours and that can mix and match with
34:21trims and roof and doors, etc. So we customise the external experience to suit the customer
34:27requirements. And Selection Steel have all the colours to meet that demand.
34:35Eureka is a manufacturer of garages and sheds. We manufacture anything from your small single
34:44garage or carport up to your large industrial structures made out of universal beam or web
34:49truss frames. We have 11 branches throughout Victoria and one branch in Tasmania. And they
34:55act as a retail outlet and they are there for the sole purpose of the face-to-face contact
35:00with our customers. Eureka employs approximately 120 people in Melbourne and in the country of
35:10Victoria. And these include engineers, drafting people, office staff, machine operators, truck
35:17drivers, installers indirectly, concreters indirectly, electricians. And this has led to the success
35:25of Eureka. One of the success of Eureka has been to be at the forefront with machinery.
35:31My aim has always been to automate. So with that we have our standard cladding machines,
35:36corrugated and the like. Our purlin machines, flashings. We also have a beam liner to process
35:43structural steel. We have laser cutting tube cutters. We were the first in Australia to get
35:48a 12 metre tube cutter and laser and plasma cutters. So they're all machines that we have in these
35:54premises that will enable us to be self-sufficient and being able to deliver products in a timely
35:59manner to the customer.
36:00Coming up, the lads from the CFMEU give us a personalised tour of the massive East-West Link project.
36:20You imagine winning the bike of your dreams. Cam from Snaz, we love giving away dirt bikes and
36:33motorsport gear. The latest Enduros, the maddest two bangers you dreamed of as a young tacker,
36:38or check out these kid packages. Whatever you do, leave the grind behind and get out and enjoy life.
36:43At Snaz, we like building a community of bike-loving people who like to
36:50leave the grind behind. We understand life gets in the way. Not everyone can afford the bike of
36:57their dreams. So we provide giveaways that allow people to get out and enjoy life. So go to snaz.com.au,
37:04or scan the QR code in the corner of the screen and check out some of our crazy, crazy giveaways.
37:20So we're working on the Westgate Tunnel project and we've got the East Zone, the West Zone and also
37:30the Tunnel Zone. Such a large project, it spans quite a lot of the CBD and surrounding areas around
37:36Footscray, Spotswood, Yarraville. Also, it comes all the way through from the West Zone, which is all
37:43the way from Altona, Laverton, all the way through Williamstown. And it's a big iconic project which
37:50is going to help a lot of cars, trucks off the road and free up the traffic and really add to the
37:55infrastructure around the area. A part of the project is getting a lot of the trucks off the
37:59Westgate Freeway because currently it's a lot of traffic that goes over there, a lot of traffic
38:03congestion and a lot of the new infrastructure that we're building here is going to help that out,
38:08especially coming over from the West, to free that up and have direct access for the trucks to go down
38:13to the docks and help with the infrastructure. The scope of this project is massive. We've got
38:20everything from roads to shared user paths. It ranges from the CBD to the West. It's just a massive
38:28project. Some of these bridge sections have come in at over 400 tonnes. We've had multiple lifts, which
38:35is a dual lift with two 600-tonne mobile cranes. That in itself is pretty complicated, but then when
38:41you add in the factor of the public, yeah, so it's just been crazy being a part of it.
38:54The Footscray roads, all of that was done from scratch, which starts from the beginning, which is
38:58all, you know, board piles, concrete, and then it goes upwards from that, which is piers,
39:03craneage, and the section we went to was over the water. So that's all done from scratch and
39:08obviously built in the water while it's live. So it's been a fantastic opportunity to represent
39:14and continue to represent members out on this job with the CFMEU, and it starts from the basics of
39:19keeping a good tidy site, which is our site labourers, all the way through from our scaffolders, building
39:24safe accesses to gate people as well as the labour on site, our riggers, crane crew, and it's been
39:32great and obviously pushing a lot of diversity, which we're all for because, you know, we're a
39:36diverse union and we want everyone to have a good go at having a good urn.
39:42This is just to take all the congestion out of the suburbs, the surrounding suburbs,
39:47so for trucks heading from west to north or north to west. This gives everybody the second option
39:53of not wanting to go over the Westgate bridge, they can use the Westgate tunnel.
39:58We're building this job in and around the public and around live roads, you know, in a perfect world
40:02you'd be able to shut down every single major road at every time and then just build what was required,
40:08but in this instance we need a lot of shutdown sections and to be able to progress the job,
40:12closing down areas at a time, but all the while building while there's still pedestrians, cars,
40:18a lot of cyclists and stuff going by. We're able to have an opportunity of getting some shots of the
40:24Valloway which is built, there are a couple of sections in, which is going to be a high-speed
40:27bicycle path, which will enable cyclists to come to and from the west into the city, which will actually
40:34be over the Footscray Road, which will really help our cyclists with, you know, which is what we're all about.
40:39With the shared user path that we're building on the project, cyclists will be able to get on
40:43the Docklands and have a safe passage right up through Footscray Road into Footscray.
40:58We've had quite a lot of dynamic and work areas that we need to fulfil what we're trying to achieve
41:03out here, which went from, you know, working on water, which is an area called 401, which is over the
41:08water. Obviously we're not draining it out, so you've got to work off barges, off platforms, rigs
41:14and craneage and stuff, so we had to make sure that we're doing it safely and have all the safety
41:18mechanisms in place, so no one's obviously at risk while working at that. We had dynamics of working
41:23at elevated roads as well, so making sure that there's nothing underneath that can injure workers.
41:29And then as we progressed down the project, there was also working over power stations, which we had to
41:33then have certain provisions in place, so we didn't have anyone was at risk lifting girders over live
41:39power, all in consultation with the workforce and then working through with management to come up
41:44with the solutions needed.
41:48We've got the portals, the north portal and the two south portals, the inbound and outbound one,
41:54and we're also in the tunnel zone as well when our trade's starting there. Still got about 12 months to
41:59go, so still got a bit to do. We've got a few delays on the project, we've just mainly been outside the
42:05tunnel at the moment, but our trades are starting in there soon and we'll be getting to the tunnel
42:10with our finishing trades in there.
42:16We've got farm workers, concreters, finishing trades and that in the trans-urban building we built
42:22in their control centre there, so we had painters, plasterers, tilers, also got train operators,
42:27builders, labourers as well. There's a broad range of trades we look after. Good for everyone to be
42:33part of the union, the more people we've got the more power we have.
42:40It's been fantastic, great opportunity to be able to come out here and not only represent workers but
42:44be a part of such a large scale and we are saying it's going to be an iconic project once it's finished
42:49for all the good it's going to do and also just actual just visual and the stance and how it looks,
42:54you know as you're getting around we saw the new green pedestrian bridge and stuff and you know at
42:59one stage it wasn't there and now we've built it and now it is and that this becomes part of the
43:03overall landscape of Melbourne but yeah it's been a great and ongoing honour I guess you would say
43:08to be able to on this project and represent workers. It's definitely a privilege to be in this project
43:13representing CFMEU members, being a health and safety representative, looking after them, making sure
43:19they're paid right, making sure they're safe and making sure they go home. Next time on Rides Down Under
43:26Aussie Truckers it's all about the ladies. We meet proud CFMEU shop steward Tanya Bosik. This lady is a
43:33dynamo on and off the job. We catch up with Nicole, manager and fabricator at Diesel Doctor. She can do it
43:42all, welding, driving trucks, excavators and did I mention she's a fitness fanatic and pole dancer. All this
43:50and more next time on Rides Down Under Aussie Truckers. Our crew stays at Quality Hotel Robertson Gardens, Brisbane.
