Soon after Hoppy and Red arrive where the murderous outlaws operate with impunity and precision in lawless Canyon City to help sheriff Barnett the mark of the vigilante, 3-7-77, starts to appear at the locations of those Hoppy suspects.
Transcript
00:00You are witnessing one of the worst outbreaks of lawlessness.
00:30In the West, the killer struck with mysterious deadly precision.
00:34No one's life was safe.
00:36Stages couldn't get through.
00:37Freight wagons were robbed.
00:39Even a lone traveler was set upon.
00:43This is Canyon City, which wore the brunt of the killer epidemic.
00:47That young fellow driving the buckboard is Sheriff Ray Barnett.
00:51The man he brought in is a suspected thief.
00:55That is, the sheriff thought he'd caught one of the band of men who were terrorizing his community.
01:01Hey, David!
01:03David!
01:07What's happened, Ray?
01:09You recognize him?
01:11Yes, he's Lanny Glass.
01:13I have an idea.
01:13He's one of the guy we've been after.
01:15I'm going to make him talk.
01:16Get your stuff and come over to the office.
01:17Oh, I don't know about treating him, Ray.
01:19I'm only in the pophic area, you know.
01:21Well, look, I don't have time to drive 25 miles for a doctor.
01:25Besides, you've done pretty good digging lead out of people in the past.
01:28Hello, Chad.
01:41Hi.
01:42Lanny Glass, eh?
01:43Think he's one of them, Sheriff?
01:44I sure do.
01:46Give me a hand, will you?
01:48Easy.
01:49We've got to keep him alive.
01:52Looks like he's in pretty bad shape.
01:54Yeah.
01:55My brother's on his way over here now.
01:56I sure hope the doc can save him.
01:58You've got to get your hand on one of them.
02:00I can tell you a few things.
02:03How about the doc?
02:05I can't tell yet.
02:06Can he talk?
02:09Better let him rest a while.
02:11All right.
02:12Still say you ought to have a doctor's diploma, Dave.
02:17How'd you get a line on Glass?
02:19Jeb Harris was robbed two weeks ago, remember?
02:22Yeah.
02:23Shot up pretty bad, too.
02:24Yeah.
02:25Well, he didn't get a chance to see anybody's face because of the mask.
02:28But he described a certain fancy vest of what I was wearing.
02:32There's your vest.
02:34Glass was wearing it when I met him on the road this morning.
02:37By golly, Ray, maybe you can make it stick this time.
02:40I'm worried, Chad.
02:42We need help.
02:44It's going to take a lot of doing to prosecute this case,
02:46even if we get something to go on.
02:48Yeah, I know.
02:48Do you have any ideas?
02:52You bet I have.
02:55I know just who we need.
02:57Yeah?
02:58Who?
02:59Hop along, Cassidy.
03:00The sheriff's letter stressed the urgency of their situation.
03:05My pal, Red, and I left immediately for Canyon City.
03:09We've been on the road for two days,
03:10and we're getting close to our destination.
03:13I'd known Ray's father, one of the finest peace officers in the West,
03:17and I couldn't turn down his son's plea for help on his first case.
03:20Let's go.
03:50Wait a minute here, see, Mark.
04:14He shot twice in the back.
04:19He hasn't even pulled his gun.
04:20Look at that bandage on his chest.
04:32This fellow must have nine lives.
04:35Had nine lives, you mean.
04:41Get his horse ready.
04:42We continued on toward Canyon City.
04:47Four miles from our destination, we met the sheriff and his posse.
04:51After the introductions, I explained how we found the dead man.
05:00I learned somebody had smuggled a gun into him,
05:02and he'd made a jailbreak, leaving the sheriff locked in his own cell, tied and gagged.
05:08He'd be there still if his brother hadn't dropped in and released him.
05:11The sheriff hadn't gotten a thing out of the criminal, but apparently other members of the gang didn't think Lanny could keep his mouth shut.
05:20Well, how'd you like registering yourself and picking out your own room?
05:34Yeah, things must be getting pretty bad when the hotel help has to leave town.
05:37Well, it looks like everybody's left.
05:41That outlaw gang certainly did a good job of scaring people off.
05:44You can't blame them.
05:45I guess they wanted to live.
05:46Look at that sign.
05:56Closed.
05:57The killers can have anything in my store.
06:00I'm getting out with my wife and kids.
06:03J.J. Hornsby.
06:05I guess he expresses everybody's feelings.
06:07Yeah, like you said, there must be a big brain back of that gang.
06:10You know about the only thing open is the apothecary in the saloon and the liver stable.
06:15Yeah, and Chad Young's running that liver stable at a loss.
06:17He has to stay open to hold his franchise for the stage line.
06:22Let's go over and see the sheriff.
06:26I'll admit, Mr. Cassidy, it was foolish of me to try to take on the job of cleaning up this town with no previous experience.
06:31My brother warned me.
06:33But now my reputation's at stake.
06:35I didn't dare appeal to the state authorities anymore.
06:38That's why I wrote you.
06:41Well, didn't they send you any help?
06:42Well, one marshal didn't even get here.
06:45The other was killed 24 hours after they got in town.
06:48Now, the thing is, the outlaws know when the stage is carrying money or valuable mail.
06:54Well, maybe they've got some kind of a tip-off system.
06:56It's got me stymied.
06:58Because when there's nothing of value on the stage or the freighter, they're left alone.
07:02But the outlaws even know when a passenger's carrying money.
07:07Hmm.
07:08Here.
07:08Let me read this.
07:12This is to inform you and your brother to leave town or suffer the consequences.
07:16Do not bring any more lawmen into town.
07:20I hoped you could work undercover, but now that you've brought the body in, I guess it's too late.
07:25What more can you tell me about this man's glass?
07:28He works for Sam Wade.
07:29He owns a saloon.
07:31We'd better go over and have a talk with Mr. Wade, huh?
07:33See you later.
07:34Are you sure you won't have a drink, gentlemen?
07:44No, thanks.
07:45Earl, come here.
07:51Shake hands with Mr. Cassidy.
07:53Glad to know you, Cassidy.
07:54And Mr. Connors.
07:55Hi.
07:55Hi.
07:55This is Earl Fox, gentlemen.
07:57They've been asking questions about Lanny Glass, Earl.
07:59I'll be glad to tell them anything I can, Mr. Wade.
08:02What do you want to know?
08:03Who shot Lanny Glass in the back.
08:06What are you asking me for?
08:07I just thought you might be interested in finding out who killed a friend of yours.
08:11Look here, Cassidy.
08:12We mind our own business.
08:14Why don't you do the same?
08:15It is our business when killings happen around here as often as they do.
08:22Who asked you, wise guy?
08:28Get up, Earl.
08:28He gets excited easy, Mr. Cassidy.
08:35So I noticed.
08:37Thanks for the hospitality.
08:45What do you think, Sam?
08:48That you're a fool, Earl.
08:49That you're a fool.
09:19I ain't carrying no strong bucks.
09:31I want to talk to your passengers.
09:37Outside, everybody.
09:43All right.
09:43Which one's got the money?
09:55Looks like that kind of narrows are down to you, mister.
09:59Come on.
10:00Let's get out of here.
10:01Get inside.
10:06Wait a minute.
10:07I forgot something.
10:13All right.
10:14Let's get out of here.
10:17We went back and picked up the fellow that was killed, Mr. Cassidy.
10:20But as far as he recognized those killers, I can't do it.
10:24Them and their horses was all covered over.
10:26They're not taking any more chances on their clothing being recognized.
10:30What about their voices?
10:31A couple of them talked, but they didn't sound familiar.
10:36Well, I'll go tell Mrs. Post about her husband.
10:39Chad.
10:40Yes, sir?
10:41Where did this stage stop last?
10:43Crystal Creek Relay Station.
10:44Why?
10:44I'll have to tell you later.
10:46Red.
10:46I'm going to ride out of town for a while.
10:48Keep your eyes on that saloon, will you?
10:49Oh, can't it go with you, Hoppy?
10:51Mr. Young can watch the saloon.
10:52He's got enough to do.
10:53I'll have to tell you later.
11:23I'll have to tell you later.
11:53I thought I'd seen this fellow around town.
12:19His wound wasn't serious.
12:23The fall had knocked him unconscious.
12:24It's Slater.
12:51Get him inside, quick.
12:52Look at that, Sam.
13:10Three-seven-seventy-seven.
13:12You know what that means?
13:14Yeah.
13:15How'd he get there?
13:16Well, pick him up.
13:21Those yellow rats.
13:23You can't blame him, Sam.
13:25The horse wants later when he fell out right here.
13:28Three-seven-seventy-seven.
13:31I wonder who could have written him.
13:33See how bad he's hurt, David.
13:34Oh, not too bad.
13:42Nicked in the shoulder.
13:44But those numbers, Ray.
13:45What do you think?
13:47Bring him to the office.
13:50The second alive one we've gotten our hands on.
13:52Yeah, we've got to keep him that way, too.
13:54Well, I'll try, but he's a marked man.
13:56He's in the...
13:59He's in the...
14:01Yep.
14:02Go on.
14:04Ah!
14:08Ah!
14:11Ah!
14:14Two minutes!
14:17Ah!
14:20Ah!
14:23Two minutes!
14:32Well, nothing happened, eh, Tim?
14:53Why should it?
14:54I wasn't carrying nothing, neither were my passengers.
14:57Them holed-up men noted, all right.
15:02You want me to go get him?
15:10No.
15:12Doggone it, Hoppy, you're sure acting mysterious.
15:14About what?
15:15What's going on?
15:17What's everybody so scared of this number, 3777, for?
15:21Fred, how long did you go to school?
15:23School?
15:24Well, seven or eight years, why?
15:26Which grade?
15:27Which grade?
15:28Why, I'll have you know I was...
15:29Sam, when are you going to find out who's behind this 3777 business?
15:38In a day or two.
15:39That's what you said three days ago.
15:41What does the boss say?
15:43Just what I've always said, that you're a fool.
15:45Well, I'm not foolish enough to hang around this town until they put a noose around my neck.
15:48I'm getting out of here.
15:50Maybe you better go out to the shack to get over your jitters.
15:52That's a good idea.
15:54An old penny anti-377 committee is going to scare me out of town.
15:58I'm not as brave as you, Sam.
16:01Anybody else coming along?
16:02I'm not as brave as you, Sam.
16:32Three, seven, seventy-seven.
16:39Backwards is seventy-seven, seven-three.
16:44Hmm.
16:45I don't care how many times you deny it, Ray.
16:47You can't tell me that you don't know anything about 3777.
16:51I told you, David, I won't take chances with our lives.
16:54Well, it's dangerous when a secret organization attempts to take the law in its own hands.
16:57I don't think there's anything to be alarmed about.
17:01So long as the sheriff had nothing to do with it, why worry?
17:04Let's take another look at Slater.
17:15Wake up.
17:17Wake up.
17:18Come on, wake up.
17:18You'll have to talk sooner or later.
17:25He's through talking.
17:27He's dead.
17:28What did you say?
17:31Dead?
17:33From a minor infection?
17:35Oh, Ray, you've got to get a real doctor in this town.
17:37It isn't fair to me or anyone else.
17:39Hey, get a hold of yourself.
17:43It's not your fault.
17:44You've done the best you could.
17:49So you couldn't stay at the hideout, Jack, huh?
17:51You wouldn't either.
17:52Somebody painted 3777 on the front door.
17:56You scare easy, Earl.
17:57What you need is a drink.
17:58I told you before, Sam, I'm not as brave as you.
18:00What you need is a drink.
18:18Later, with Young's help, I set a trap.
18:20He was to let it be known that his stage was to carry a Wells Fargo shipment of $30,000
18:25that he had to get through as one last desperate effort to keep his franchise.
18:30Hi, Rip.
18:393, March, 7, 7th of March, 77.
18:47Say, that could mean March 7th, 1877.
18:50What happened on that date?
18:51Didn't you study your history?
18:53Oh, Hoppy.
18:55Hey, look.
18:56If you won't tell me about them numbers,
18:57what do them pieces of cloth tied on the stagecoach mean?
19:00The white cloth means the passenger's carrying a lot of money.
19:03The checkered cloth means the stage is carrying a strong box,
19:06or it's a wagon with a valuable shipment.
19:08What about the black cloth?
19:09Nothing of value.
19:10Let it go through.
19:12Just as I figured.
19:15How about these numbers?
19:16Don't tell me it's finally got you.
19:41This is no time for your smart talk, Earl.
19:43Where's the boss?
19:45He's going to meet us.
19:47Where are the panchos and blankets?
19:48Inside.
19:49Well, let's get going.
19:50There's $30,000 waiting for us.
19:53And don't stop to worry about those numbers.
19:56I don't know, Sam.
19:57Seven always was my unlucky number.
20:02I'm pulling out right after I get my share on this job.
20:04I'm pulling out right after I get my share on this job.
22:34Come on, down the hill.
22:37Well, there's the leader of the gang.
22:45Ray, you're not going to like what you see.
22:56I'm sorry, Ray.
22:57I've been suspicious of him for a long time.
22:59I think he'll confess that he smuggled a gun to your first prisoner and added to the infection of the second one.
23:05Let's get back to town.
23:06First, it never dawned on me you're behind the 3777 idea.
23:15Yeah, shucks.
23:16I knew all the time when Hoppy sent that fellow back to town with numbers written on his slicker.
23:19What was that?
23:22Well, I was pretty sure.
23:25You know, I kind of enjoyed being a one-man vigilante committee.
23:28When I write the governor, I'll tell him all you've done for us.
23:31Ray, I'd just assume you'd keep the secret from the governor and everybody else.
23:35Let him think it was your idea.
23:36It might help you politically.
23:37Well, thank you.
23:38Well, I'm not going to move an inch till somebody tells me why those outlaws were afraid of the numbers.
23:43All right.
23:44When the vigilantes were first organized in San Francisco, all the members used numbers in place of their names.
23:50Three men, number three, number seven, and 77, took care of the bad men.
23:57That's why all killers learned to dread those numbers.
24:00They thought it meant a grave three feet wide, seven feet long, and 77 inches deep.
24:07Does that explain it?
24:08What do you know about that?
24:11Is that all that scared them?
24:13So long, Ray.
24:14So long.
24:15So long, Chad.
24:15Bye, Hoppy.
24:17Oh, Hoppy.
24:26Come on, let's go.
24:29Oh, what a character.
24:30Hi there.
24:46Friends, this is the first time in the five years since you've been kind enough to invite me into your homes on television that I've taken the liberty of speaking to you personally.
24:54I would just like to assure you that any product you see Hoppy's name on, in my mind, is the finest.
25:01Now, here's a little message from my little friends.
25:07Always mind your daddy and your mommy.
25:10Please remember, they're the best friends you have in the world.
25:14Till next week, take good care of yourselves.
25:16There goes, on his way, down the moon that trails to where cowboys rain.
25:28Hop along, Cassidy.
25:31Hop along, Cassidy.
25:33He'll return, soon again.
25:37There's no use to say goodbye until then.
25:43Hop along, Cassidy.
25:45So long, hop along.
25:47Hop along.
