00:00Here he comes, here he comes, there's the trumpets, there's the drums, here he comes,
00:10Hopalong Cassidy, here he comes.
00:15Last April, a Wells Fargo stage headed for Tucson with $50,000 in gold was held up by daring bandits.
00:34The driver was killed, but no trace had ever been found of Harry Gordon, the one-legged shotgun guard.
00:41Then six months later, with the case still unsolved, hijacker struck again.
00:45Getting another large gold shipment from the men and killing more men.
00:52As acting marshal of Twin Rivers, I formed a posse, but a careful search of the territory disclosed no clues.
01:01The next day, I made out my report to Wells Fargo, suggesting that if they'd find Harry Gordon,
01:06we'd have the brains behind both holdups.
01:12Hey, Hoppy, read this.
01:15I'd known Jim as a child, and it had been hard for me to see him sent up.
01:22But the evidence was all against him.
01:24At the trial, Ted Clark, Ben's foreman, had sworn he saw the boy shoot through the window at his boss.
01:30Jim's shotgun was found nearby.
01:32Also, a note for $500, which he owed Samuels, had been discovered in the rancher's desk.
01:37The kid must be out of his mind.
01:40What do you suppose he wanted to go and do a crazy thing like that for?
01:43To prove I was railroaded.
01:44Jim.
01:46Reach.
01:49Jim, you must be out of your mind coming back here to Twin Rivers, where everybody hates you for killing Ben Samuels.
01:54I did not kill him.
01:56And I never railroaded anybody either.
01:58Sit down.
01:58I'm not blaming you, Hoppy.
02:15You did all you could for me.
02:16It's just that everything happened so fast and so much evidence piled up against me that I almost believed it myself.
02:23Well, that's why I broke out, to come back here and ask if you'd help me to prove that I'm innocent.
02:32Jim admitted hating Ben ever since he'd shot his pet dog, claiming it had gone mad.
02:37When the boy insisted the man was no good, he was ridiculed.
02:41Everyone knew of Jim's feelings.
02:43That's why they'd been so ready to accept his guilt.
02:47The $500 note had been a forgery.
02:49He never knew how they got his shotgun.
02:51And Clark had deliberately lied about seeing him shoot Ben.
02:55They wouldn't listen to Jim's alibi that he'd been on the trail of one of the Wells Fargo hold-up men.
03:02Wells Fargo robbery.
03:04That was just a day or so before Ben's murder.
03:08That's quite a coincidence, eh, Hoppy?
03:10Yeah.
03:12What made you think you were on the trail of a hold-up man?
03:15Well, I'd been rounding up strays, and it was almost dark, and I heard a horse winning behind me.
03:22Turned around to see who it was, and I saw a masked rider tearing off toward the hills.
03:27Well, I rode after him for quite a time, but it was too fast for me.
03:31Then Clark and some men rode up and accused me of murdering Ben.
03:34Jim, for a lawman, this may seem strange to you, but I was never convinced that you were guilty of murder.
03:43So ever since you were sent up, I've been working on an idea that might prove that you didn't kill Ben.
03:49Now that you've risked your life to come back here, I'm going to do everything I can for you.
03:53But remember this.
03:56I still represent the law, and as far as I'm concerned, you're an escaped convict.
04:00Now, if this thing isn't cleared up immediately, you're on your way back to the penitentiary.
04:05In the meantime, you're in my custody.
04:08Is that understood?
04:09Oh, sure, Hoppy.
04:11And thanks.
04:12If folks here in town find out about him, Hoppy, they'll lynch him as you're a-shooting.
04:16Yeah, you're probably right.
04:18We'd better take him up to that old line shack till I figure out what to do.
04:23Think you can get him out of here without anybody seeing you?
04:26Oh, you know you can trust me, Hoppy.
04:28Yeah, I know.
04:32Now, first I want to question Clark.
04:34That's Frank's foreman.
04:35Frank?
04:36Who's Frank, Hoppy?
04:37Ben's brother.
04:38He came out here from St. Louis for the funeral and stayed on to run the ranch.
04:41Yeah, he did so well he was able to buy up most of the town.
04:44He even took over the bank when it failed.
04:46I didn't even know Ben had a brother.
04:48Yeah, spit an image of him.
04:49He's as blonde as Ben is dark.
04:51Frank, I'll go out and take a look and see if the coast is clear.
04:59Well, everything's all right.
05:00Come on.
05:02Thanks, Hoppy.
05:04See you, Hoppy.
05:05You better keep your horse head around behind.
05:23I'll bring you some drop from town as soon as I can.
05:26Remember, keep out of sight.
05:28I will.
05:28Thanks, Red.
05:29With Jim's story and the recent Wells Fargo robbery fresh in my mind,
05:37I kept wondering if there might be some connection between Ben's death and that first holdup.
05:42There had been killers around.
05:45Maybe they hid out at Ben's, then killed him when he discovered them.
05:48Maybe Clark.
05:49It was Ted Clark, the man I'd wanted to question.
06:08He'd been shot in the back.
06:11Doc Weston was out on a call when I got Clark back to town.
06:15By the time he returned, it was too late.
06:20Before the body was removed, I'd asked the doc to extract the fatal bullet.
06:24It was from a .30-30 Winchester.
06:27Frank Samuels had hurried over from the bank when he heard the news.
06:31He ruefully admitted a dozen men in town had similar guns.
06:35The man was visibly shaken by the death of his foreman.
06:39I can't understand who'd want to kill poor Ted.
06:42No enemies, huh?
06:43Well, none I know of except Jim Adams, and he's in prison.
06:47Funny thing, I was just on my way out to ask Clark a few questions about the Adams case.
06:53What for?
06:54That was all settled months ago.
06:56Yeah, I know.
06:57But after this last holdup, I got thinking maybe there was some connection between Ben's death and this other robbery.
07:04Impossible.
07:06Jim waited till Ben was helpless with a broken right leg.
07:09One I'd set that very day.
07:10Then shot point-blank through the window at him.
07:12Never saw a face so banged up.
07:15Well, maybe Ted was in with the holdup man.
07:17When Ben heard about it, he was murdered.
07:20Jim would have been the logical goat.
07:22My brother always wrote to me how much he liked and trusted his foreman.
07:27And Clark, all the time he worked for me, his conduct was a beyond reproach.
07:30It is kind of funny, though, him being killed after this last holdup.
07:34Oh, just a coincidence.
07:35He couldn't possibly have had anything to do with the Wells Fargo robbery.
07:38Well, maybe I am on the wrong track.
07:40I'm afraid you are, Cassidy.
07:42While you're here, Frank, might as well take along your bottle of tonic.
07:45Good idea.
07:45I'm arranging to have Ted buried on the ranch alongside of Ben.
07:54Oh, that's a nice gesture, Frank.
08:02Well, there you are.
08:05Thank you, Doc.
08:06I sure hope you solve Ted's murder, Cassidy.
08:10I'm afraid I've got a lot of things to solve.
08:13Well, I'll have to get back to the office.
08:15See you later, Frank.
08:19Well, thanks very much, Doc.
08:21It's been very interesting.
08:24While Red rattled on about Clark's murder and that Jim was safe up at the shack,
08:29something in the back of my mind kept bothering me.
08:32The last time I'd been in Weston's office was when Red had a stomachache from eating too many flakjacks.
08:40I wondered where Doc got the money to refurnish his office so elegantly.
08:44He'd been drinking a great deal lately, and I knew his practice had fallen off.
08:48Then it hit me.
08:50Weston had mentioned Ben's broken right leg.
08:53That dead body I had seen had a broken left leg.
08:56That point never came up at Jim's trial.
09:02Come here.
09:09Sit down, dear.
09:14What's the matter?
09:16Stick out your tongue.
09:18Say ah.
09:20Huh?
09:20Oh, no.
09:22What's wrong?
09:22I'm going to have to get you over to Dr. Weston's for a thorough physical examination.
09:28Me?
09:29Examination?
09:29What for?
09:30You don't look too well.
09:32Oh, I never felt better in my life, Hoppy.
09:37I don't?
09:38No, that's got me worried.
09:41You're not a very good color.
09:43Your skin's kind of green.
09:45Yes?
09:45You know, now that you've mentioned, I don't feel so good.
09:49I feel kind of squeamish.
09:51We'd better get you over there and see what he'll prescribe, huh?
09:55I don't feel very good, Hoppy.
09:58We'd better get over there.
09:59Yeah.
09:59While Red was in the other room being examined, I searched through Doc's papers.
10:13I had to work fast.
10:15Glancing in an account book, I was surprised to find large fees charged to Frank Samuels.
10:19Why should such a healthy-looking man have so many doctor bills?
10:29Once more.
10:53Your heart is perfect.
10:56And so is your temperature.
10:58Nothing wrong with you, except you eat too much.
11:02I always say, Doc, I'd rather die of eating too much than to starve to death.
11:07Hey, that reminds me, I've got to get some grub out to Jim.
11:09Jim?
11:11Yeah, Jim's my cat.
11:14He's, uh, she's going to have some kittens.
11:16Got to have a lot of milk, you know, when they're having kittens.
11:19Oh, Jim's short for Jemina.
11:21Well, don't worry.
11:22Cats have nine lives.
11:28Well, how's my boy, Doc?
11:31Fit as a fiddle.
11:32Oh, I'm glad to hear that.
11:34Say, um, why not give him some of that tonic Frank uses?
11:38Why, uh, yeah, sure.
11:39Can't hurt him.
11:41Yeah, it'll make him think he's getting his money's worth.
11:43Oh, Hoppy, I don't need it.
11:45I feel good.
11:46You'll be all right now.
11:47Oh, but Hoppy, I...
11:52Oh, I'm glad to see you.
12:22I sent a wire to St. Louis, then decided to ride out to Samuels Ranch for a look around.
12:38What time you got here, I was beginning to feel my ribs.
13:07What are you doing outside?
13:08I thought you was going to stay hid.
13:09I thought I could at least get some water for myself.
13:13Did Hoppy talk to Clark?
13:15Has he found out anything?
13:16I'll tell you what's happening as soon as I hide my horse here.
13:18What?
13:36See, Clark's death sure doesn't help my case any.
13:58No, but don't worry.
14:00Hope you'll think up something.
14:01I hope so.
14:06It seemed to me I heard shots in the distance, but I wasn't sure.
14:26Then the sound came again and from the direction of the line cabin.
14:29Oh, it's over.
14:59Come on, Slugs, you got any?
15:26No.
15:29We're coming in after you.
15:39That won't be necessary.
15:41Drop your gun.
15:44Hey, that's Hoppy.
15:46Come on.
15:49Get over there.
15:53Boy, are we glad to see you, Hoppy.
15:55We sure are.
15:56Pick up their guns.
15:58There seem to be a lot of trigger-happy men around here lately.
16:01We saw horses, hit out and back.
16:02Figured that Wallace Fargo Robbers was holed up here.
16:05Then why don't you make sure before you started shooting?
16:07Wait a minute.
16:08Don't you two work for Samuels?
16:10Sure.
16:10Been riding for him for over a month.
16:12He'll vouch for us.
16:13I'll bet he would.
16:15Give them their guns, Red.
16:16But Hoppy...
16:17Give them their guns.
16:18All right, get out of here.
16:29Why don't you arrest them, Hoppy?
16:31I'll bet they're the thieves themselves.
16:33But there's somebody with more brains than they have back of these holdups.
16:36Jim, I think you'll be safe from jail.
16:44You better wait until it gets dark and bring him in.
16:48We waited until dark, then Red and I smuggled Jim into town and locked him up.
16:52This morning I'd received an answer to my St. Louis wire confirming my suspicions,
16:56but I needed more evidence.
16:58Wanting Red to keep his mouth shut and his eyes open, I once again was headed for the Samuels' ranch.
17:10As I passed the bank, Frank was just entering.
17:16Luck was with me.
17:28I was just entering.
17:58Ben Samuels was buried up there for those trees.
18:17This was an unpleasant task, but it had to be done.
18:23I know an office should have arrested you, bushwhackers.
18:26Where's the fellow we saw for the shack?
18:28Still up there, I suppose.
18:30Oh, no, he's not.
18:32What did you do with him?
18:35Where's Jim Adams?
18:37Jim Adams?
18:38He's in the state penitentiary, I suppose.
18:40Not according to the wanted poster we saw in the post office.
18:44Take a look around, Burke.
18:51Well, what do you know about that?
18:53Right under our noses all the time.
18:56So he was in the state penitentiary, huh?
19:09Well, if you two men will come back in a couple of days, I'll have the papers drawn up for you and you can sign them.
19:13Well, hello, Cassidy.
19:18Hi.
19:19Any news with Ted's killer?
19:20Can I talk to you alone?
19:22Sure.
19:22Come on in my office.
19:23I've got a better idea.
19:35Well, take him over to the old fort.
19:36You're going to get the same thing you gave Ben Samuel.
19:39I didn't kill Samuel.
19:40I didn't kill Samuel.
19:40Move on.
19:57I see.
19:58Now, here's something that might interest you.
20:01I just got this telegram a while ago from the Wells Fargo agent in Tucson.
20:05It says he's got a hot lead on Harry Gordon.
20:08Harry Gordon?
20:09You remember him.
20:10The one-legged shotgun guard that disappeared after the holdup last April.
20:14Oh, yeah.
20:15What kind of a lead?
20:17Well, he says that somebody here in Twin Rivers tipped him off that he was here in the vicinity.
20:21The agent's coming over to investigate.
20:23Well, I hope that bandit doesn't try to hold up my bank.
20:26Oh, I don't think...
20:27We'll take care of this ourselves.
20:46One.
20:48Two.
20:48Nobody's taking the law in their own hands while I'm marshaled here.
20:59You won't be marshaled long.
21:00We don't want a law officer who hides out criminals.
21:03That's right.
21:03Don't forget that I helped send Jim to prison as a murderer.
21:07When he risked his life to come back here and tell me he didn't kill Ben Samuels,
21:11I gave him the protection he deserved.
21:12Don't let Cassidy hoodwink you.
21:14He's always had a liking for this kid.
21:17Don't you remember how he fought against jailing him?
21:19Have you forgotten what a good man Ben was?
21:22And that that coward killed him in cold blood.
21:25Shot a helpless invalid without giving him a chance.
21:30I've got two guns here that say nobody's going to touch that boy.
21:33I'll drop him this second you try using.
21:36Maybe you should explain your reasons for wanting Jim out of the way.
21:40And why Ben's death concerns you so much.
21:45Why you.
21:47I have more reasons than anyone for hating Adam.
21:52But like Cassidy, I don't go along with my bro.
21:55Bobby, here's the two.
21:56Never mind, Red.
21:58Tex, you and some of the boys get Doc out of here.
22:00All right, break it up.
22:01I'll take care of these fellas, Cassidy.
22:03You better get them on their horses, pay them off, and get them out of town.
22:06All right, follow me, fellas, and I'll pay you off.
22:08Red thought I was crazy for not locking up the two men.
22:10But after I explained why I hadn't, he changed his mind.
22:16Now start off like you're leaving town.
22:18Get the wagon and bring it around back and hurry.
22:25Jake, come here, will you?
22:26Yes.
22:27Take this over to the post office.
22:29I want it to get out on the next stage.
22:30I'll tend to things here.
22:32All right.
22:32You going someplace, Samuels?
22:57Why, I was just checking the bank's funds.
22:59Property of the U.S. Treasury.
23:04Bank's funds, huh?
23:06You also got a little careless about having your hair show dark at the roots.
23:10Or do you really drink that peroxide the Doc gives you as a tonic?
23:14I don't know what you're talking about.
23:16You're under arrest for murder and robbery.
23:20You got any more ideas now or you want to come along quietly?
23:23Hey, Hoppy.
23:32They backtracked just like you figured they would.
23:34We sure surprised them.
23:35That's good.
23:37Now, Jim, you better start giving Ben here some pointers on prison life.
23:40Ben?
23:41Ben Samuels?
23:41In the flesh.
23:43But we buried him.
23:45This is Frank.
23:46Look at his blonde hair.
23:47Ah, it's a bleach job.
23:48There is no Frank Samuels from St. Louis.
23:51This man is Ben Samuels.
23:52He held up the stage and killed Gordon.
23:54Gordon is now buried in the grave that was supposed to have been Ben.
23:58All right, come on.
24:00All right.
24:02The same judge who had sent Jim to prison
24:04had presented the new evidence to the proper authorities
24:07and had received from the governor a full pardon for him.
24:11Jim had now been appointed by the judge as foreman of the Samuels ranch
24:15until the estate could be settled.
24:16I explained why I'd grown suspicious of Doc and Samuels,
24:21that Clark had been shot after the last holdup in a fight over the spoils.
24:25When I planted the seed of suspicion against Doc, he was killed.
24:30Ben had built up a false life over a period of years,
24:33and the only one who'd suspected him had been Jim.
24:35Hi there, little partners.
24:43I understand there's been quite a little talk around your house lately about going to bed.
24:50I know that we all hate to go to bed.
24:53We're always so afraid we're going to miss something.
24:56But you must get a lot of sleep.
24:58And the time to go to bed is when your mommy or your daddy tell you to.
25:04Not 15 minutes later or 20 minutes later,
25:08or not one or two television shows later,
25:11but right now.
25:13I'll see you next week.
25:15Until then, get lots of good sleep, will you?
25:18Good night.
25:22There he goes on his way
25:25Down the moon, the trail to where cowboys rest
25:30Hop along, Cassidy
25:33Hop along, Cassidy
25:37He'll return soon again
25:40There's no use to say goodbye until then
25:45Hop along, Cassidy
25:48So long, hop along
25:51Hop along
25:52Hop along
