00:00Here he comes, here he comes, there's the truppets, there's the drums, here he comes.
00:09Pop-a-Long Cassidy, here he comes.
00:30I've been through something like this before, and I had the feeling that come nightfall,
00:48the town of San Marcos would be ripe for a sample of crude old-fashioned western justice, a lynching.
00:56I could tell it with the whispers of the people in the street.
01:00The way they kept watching the jails.
01:03And their intended victim was young Carlos Valero, the son of my long-time friend, Don Raymond.
01:11Hey, Hoppy.
01:12Yes, Red?
01:14Think Valero's coming out of it.
01:16Good.
01:17Get me a cup of water, will you, Red?
01:29Just an hour ago, Red and I had ridden into the border town of San Marcos on our way to pick up some cattle at the Valero ranch,
01:47and had learned that Valero, still unconscious from a beating, was being held by the sheriff on the charge of murdering a rancher by the name of Taggart.
01:54Taggart must have got one good lick in before Valero knifed him.
01:58Here, Carlos.
01:59Drink some of this.
02:00You'll be all right.
02:01Take it easy.
02:02That's good.
02:03Senor Cassidy, my friend.
02:04Sheriff.
02:05Jail.
02:06Senor Cassidy, my friend.
02:07Sheriff.
02:08Jail.
02:09Senor Cassidy, my friend.
02:10Sheriff.
02:11Jail.
02:12Senor Cassidy.
02:13Why am I here?
02:14Has this been a bad dream?
02:26Your knife and Taggart's back weren't no dream.
02:29Sheriff, jail.
02:34Senor Cassidy, why am I here?
02:38Has this been a bad dream?
02:40Your knife and Taggart's back weren't no dream.
02:43My knife? Taggart?
02:48Sheriff, I've known Valera since he was a kid.
02:51I knew his father before that.
02:53They're not the kind that go around sticking people in the back.
02:56All I know is what I saw.
02:57And there's always a first time for everything.
03:01Carlos, you want to try to tell me what happened?
03:04I'm so mixed up, Senor Hoppe.
03:07But this, I swear to you, is the truth.
03:10Yesterday, I received a note from Trini.
03:13And who is Trini?
03:15She's a girl who works in the dance hall.
03:18She said for me to meet her in her room at the hotel at midnight.
03:22Just as I walked into her room, something hit me over the head.
03:25And that's all I remember.
03:28And what happened to this note that Trini sent you?
03:31I have it here.
03:38Be in my room at the hotel at midnight tonight.
03:41It's important to you.
03:42Trini.
03:44Oh, my head.
03:46And you just take it easy for a few minutes.
03:48I want time to think this out.
03:50We'll be right at the end of here.
03:51Do you believe Valero's story?
04:05Well, of course I do.
04:06Well, I'm not dumb enough to.
04:08Who asked your opinion?
04:10Well, I'm the sheriff, ain't I?
04:11I've seen dog catchers make a better sheriff.
04:14I don't have to stand here and be insulted in my own office.
04:16Then sit down.
04:17Brad, Brad.
04:19The sheriff has a right to his own opinion.
04:22Till we convince him otherwise.
04:24I had run into this kind of sheriff before.
04:27Well-meaning enough, but a little dumb.
04:30By the way,
04:32I wear a marshal's badge in my own county.
04:35Maybe you'd better swear me in as your deputy
04:37just in case anybody gets the idea of trying a necktie party.
04:41Yeah, I better.
04:42Tiger was pretty popular around these parts.
04:44Yes, he was.
04:48I wanted that deputy's badge so I could operate within the law.
04:57Yes?
04:59Oh, yes.
05:02I'll do all I can to help you, Mr. Deputy.
05:04You see, I read a great many detective stories,
05:07and I have a theory.
05:08Well, that sounds very interesting.
05:10Well, I'd like to know what time Valera came to the hotel.
05:13At exactly five minutes to twelve.
05:16It was all very unusual,
05:18but I knew he was a friend of Miss Trini's,
05:20and she being one of our special pets...
05:22And what time did Tiger get here?
05:25At exactly twelve o'clock.
05:28I happen to know the exact time
05:30because I always have my cup of tea at twelve.
05:32I see.
05:33And where was Trini all this time?
05:35At work, as usual.
05:37Oh, she has a perfect alibi.
05:39She left here at ten o'clock to go to the saloon
05:41and didn't get home until daylight.
05:43It was she who discovered the murder.
05:46You never heard such screaming.
05:47Has anything in the room been disturbed?
05:50Heavens, no.
05:50I've read enough detective stories
05:52to know better than to let anyone do that.
05:54I'd like to take a look at the room.
05:56Oh, yes, sir.
05:57It's the last room on the left on this floor.
06:03You go right down to the end of the hall.
06:05Now, I have a theory.
06:07Yes, I'm sure you have,
06:08but do you mind if I listen to it later?
06:10My theory is that when Miss Trini sent those notes,
06:14she got her dates mixed up.
06:15And when Taggart found Valero, he...
06:21I had come to Trini's room hoping to find some lead,
06:25something to work on, and I found plenty.
06:27In the first place, the room was in perfect order,
06:30not the least sign of a struggle between Valero and Taggart.
06:34A note that I'd found on Taggart's body
06:36read exactly the same as the one Valero had given me.
06:45The dust on the sill had been disturbed.
06:48That could have been caused by someone crawling in through the window.
06:52The tall man could have pulled himself up without too much trouble,
06:55and sure enough, there were fresh heel marks in the dirt under the window.
06:59Now I began to see it.
07:17Someone had hid behind the door,
07:19waited for Valero,
07:20and hit him over the head with a gun,
07:22then taken his knife and killed Taggart when he came to the room.
07:24It was a smart piece of framing,
07:27but who was he, and why?
07:29Maybe Trini's notes would give us the answer.
07:39When I'd finished telling the sheriff and read what I'd found out at the hotel...
07:43I'd swear that's the same handwriting in both notes.
07:46That's what Hoppy just got through telling you.
07:49Guess I'd better bring in Trini for questioning about the notes.
07:51No, not yet.
07:52I want to get another sample of her handwriting,
07:54and she can't lie about writing them.
07:57That'll be your job, Red.
07:58Just pretend that you've got a lot of money,
08:01and maybe you've had a little too much to drink.
08:03Oh, now, Hoppy,
08:05how can I do that?
08:06You know that dad-rated stuff always gives me the hiccups just to smell of it.
08:10Try putting some cotton in your nose.
08:14I put it in some of your mouth, too.
08:15Might keep you from talking so much.
08:17Why don't you shut up, Red?
08:19Now, you've got work to do.
08:20Get over to the salon and have a talk with Trini.
08:23And I don't think Trini will be too hard to meet.
08:27Get out of here.
08:28I'd given Red a few minutes' start.
08:47I didn't want anyone to know that he was tied in with me.
08:50But Red has the habit of doing things the hard way.
08:53And I wanted to be near in case he made any slip-up and got into trouble.
08:56The reason I wanted to talk to you, Miss Trini,
09:00was because you remind me so much of my little daughter Susie
09:04that was killed in a stampede.
09:07There she was, riding at the head of a herd of stampeding cattle,
09:11her little golden curls waving in the wind,
09:15riding to save the settlers.
09:18I thought you told me your daughter's name was Jenny.
09:20That was my other daughter.
09:23She was a pretty little thing, too.
09:25Blue eyes, golden hair.
09:29Hi, boy.
09:31Oh, I've had a sad life, Miss Trini.
09:35Hey, you.
09:36Do you mind taking your trouble somewhere else?
09:39You're disturbing our game.
09:40Don't you go telling me what to do, mister.
09:49I'm sorry if I disturbed your game, mister.
09:52It was just that my bereavement was too much for me.
09:55For two cents, I'd toss you out of here.
09:58Come on, Ross.
09:59It's your deal.
10:00You're hauling up the game.
10:01Come on, senor.
10:15We will bring to the memory of your daughter.
10:18I'll tell you what I'd like you to do, Miss Trini.
10:22I'd like you to give me a little memento of the occasion.
10:25Memento?
10:26Like what?
10:28Oh, like maybe an autograph.
10:30You know, you write something on a piece of paper.
10:37Write with something nice.
10:39All right.
10:41What shall I say?
10:43Oh, say to my dear friend Red.
10:46The man I'd most like to meet at midnight.
10:50This will remind you of your doctor?
10:52Oh, yes.
10:55She used to like to go on midnight rides with me.
11:00Read it to me.
11:05A mi querido amigo, el señor Rojo.
11:08That's in Spanish.
11:10Sure.
11:10I wrote him in Spanish.
11:12But I can't read Spanish.
11:14That makes us even.
11:16I do not know how to write in English.
11:18I knew that something had aroused the interest of the man named Ross.
11:26And I didn't know how far Red would go.
11:29Now that he was confused, I had to get him out of here in a hurry without tipping my own hand.
11:33Oh, right.
11:34If you don't like him in Spanish, we'd tear him up.
11:36Now, that's a fine thing to do.
11:38After all the money I spent on the new thing.
11:40I know you've been drinking, but I think you've bothered this little lady about long enough.
11:44Now, get out of here and leave her alone.
11:47Well, come on.
11:47Get out.
11:51If you hadn't handled that old coot, I'd have done it myself.
11:54Well, I thought it was about time to do something.
11:56Thank you, señor.
11:57I was beginning to get tired of him.
12:00And anyway, I like you much better.
12:03Maybe you would like Twini to buy you a drink?
12:05Yes?
12:06No, thanks.
12:07Not right now.
12:08I got things to do.
12:10Here, buy yourself a couple of drinks.
12:11I may be back later.
12:13I hope so.
12:22Sorry I messed things all up, Hoppy.
12:24Guess I'm just no good.
12:26What are you talking about?
12:27Nobody could have done it any better.
12:29And what a liar.
12:31You were wonderful.
12:33I was?
12:34Well, sure.
12:34You proved that Twini couldn't have written those notes, didn't you?
12:39Did I do that?
12:40You certainly did.
12:43And now we're going to have to find out who sent those notes and why.
12:47That's an impossible task.
12:49Ah, maybe not.
12:50Who brought the note to you?
12:52A man by the name of Ross.
12:54He's a gambler who hangs around the saloon.
12:56Yeah, I know who he is.
12:57What do you know about this Ross, Sheriff?
13:01Oh, not much.
13:03He rode into town a couple of weeks ago with a man named Bailey.
13:06Who's Bailey?
13:08Oh, he's a big man with chin whiskers and heavy sideburns.
13:13Does he have a knife scar on his right hand?
13:16I never noticed.
13:18You wouldn't.
13:18Now, Carlos, I want you to think hard.
13:25Were you and Taggart tied up in any way?
13:28We both liked Trini.
13:29No, that's not what I mean.
13:32Is there any reason why anyone would want to get even with both of you?
13:37Not that I can think of.
13:41Wait a minute.
13:42You might have something.
13:44About six years ago, my father and Senor Taggart found out that a man by the name of Blake was smuggling arms across the border.
13:50I remember the case.
13:52Taggart and Don Ramone brought Big Blake in.
13:55He was convicted and sentenced for five years.
13:58Do you have the file on that case, Sheriff?
14:00Must be around here somewhere.
14:03Maybe in those old filing cases.
14:04Let's take a look.
14:07Two hours and a half dozen filing drawers later, I found what I was looking for.
14:13The picture and description of Blake was close enough to fit Ross's pal, Bailey.
14:18He could grow a beard, but that knife scar on his right hand would always give him away.
14:24Now we had a suspect and a motive.
14:29But how to prove that Blake, or Bailey as he called himself, had killed Taggart was the problem.
14:34Then an idea hit me.
14:35Hey, Sheriff.
14:37Is there some place nearby where we can hide Valera for a while?
14:41Yeah, I've got a little ranch house.
14:42Three miles out the north road.
14:44Good.
14:45Red, use the back door.
14:47Get down to the liver stable and hire a light wagon and bring it around the alley back of the jail.
14:50And bring a tarpaulin.
14:52What?
14:52A tarp.
14:53Oh, you mean a tarpaulin.
14:56Look here, Cassidy.
14:57I don't like this high-handed business.
14:59What's the idea of thinking you can take my prisoner?
15:02Take it easy, Sheriff.
15:03Sheriff, I'm just trying to give you a chance to prove that you're smart enough to bring in the man who really killed Taggart.
15:08You willing to take a chance with me?
15:11I'll take a chance.
15:13Let him out.
15:14I'll take a chance.
15:44I'll take a chance.
16:14All right.
16:27Come on in.
16:28I'll put the rig away and be right back.
16:30All right, Sheriff.
16:33There you are, Carlos.
16:34I think you'll be all right here until I get back.
16:37So long as Red's here to take care of you.
16:38Yeah, you can depend on me, Hoppy.
16:40Sure.
16:42Maybe you'd better tie a string on it.
16:45Well, I'd better get back to town.
16:47You just take it easy.
16:49Vaya con Dios, Señor Hoppy.
16:50Thank you very much, Carlos.
16:52And if everything goes the way I hope it will, you'll be cleared of all charges in a few hours.
16:57Hasta luego.
16:58Yeah, hasta luego.
16:59I wasn't half as optimistic as I'd made it sound.
17:08I knew that if Blake was my man, I was up against someone who was not only a cold-blooded killer, but a mighty smart one as well.
17:20All right, Sheriff.
17:21On the way back to town, I told the Sheriff everything I wanted him to do.
17:34When I was sure he had it down pat, I'd send him ahead to slip into town the same way he'd left it.
17:39All right, we'll be right back.
18:09I could only hope that the Sheriff would be able to handle his end of the job.
18:25The chips were down and I'd have to play this game through to the last card.
18:28How about having that drink with me now?
18:34I'm busy right now.
18:37How about having a little talk?
18:41What about?
18:42Business.
18:44What kind of business?
18:46Cattle.
18:47Cattle's not my line.
18:49I'm not interested.
18:49Not even if they happen to be Carlos Valeros, Cattle?
18:56Just what are you trying to say?
18:57Hey, everybody!
18:59The letter's escaped.
19:00He's heading south.
19:01I want a posse.
19:01Here's Charlie.
19:02You.
19:02Jack.
19:03Here.
19:03Come on.
19:03Come on.
19:04Come on.
19:09They won't find him heading south, Blake.
19:12My name is Bailey.
19:14It wasn't when you were doing time in the federal penitentiary.
19:17No use to reach.
19:19Right now, you and I are playing on the same team.
19:22Want to listen to a proposition?
19:23If you've got anything to say to me, let's go in the back room.
19:26Let's go in the back room.
19:56Go on.
19:57I'm listening.
19:58It wasn't hard to figure that you were here to even things up with Taggart and the son
20:02of your other enemy, Don Ramon.
20:04Why, you...
20:04Take it easy.
20:06I said we're on the same team.
20:08I want Valero out of the way as much as I think you do.
20:11And why all this talk?
20:13Let's follow the posse and get him.
20:14Wait a minute.
20:15The posse isn't going to catch up with him.
20:17I made sure the sheriff would lead him away from Valero.
20:20Are you crazy?
20:21No.
20:23I want you to go after Valero.
20:25Alone.
20:26Huh?
20:27I'll tell you where he's hiding.
20:30And you're going to be a hero for tracking down and killing an escaping murderer.
20:35Where do you come in on this?
20:36It's simple.
20:37I've got a bill of sale for a thousand head of Valero's cattle.
20:42He's got my draft for $10,000.
20:45Now, if I can get that money back without anybody knowing anything about it, I'll be that much ahead.
20:49Less than the thousand I figure I'm giving you.
20:51Why don't you go out and get him and you draft yourself?
20:55Now, how would that look?
20:57I'm supposed to be his friend.
20:59You're a smart operator.
21:04No, I'm just lucky I happened to be in town buying some cattle the same time you were here for your reason.
21:11Say I was willing to go along with you.
21:13How do I know you could lead me to Valero?
21:15I'm the one that talked the sheriff into hiding him in case anyone got lynch-minded.
21:20The sheriff thinks he can sneak Valero out to the county seat as soon as it gets dark.
21:24I'll play it your way.
21:27Then we'll have enough on each other that we'll both have to keep our mouths shut.
21:30Then it was you who knifed Taggart and framed Valero, huh?
21:36Yeah, you had it figured right.
21:39Get your hands up. I'm the law. You're under arrest.
21:44Happy you got here when you did, Russ.
21:47Now we're out to run for it. The sheriff is probably in on everything.
21:49You'll still be able to do what you came here for.
21:52Valero's out the sheriff's house with no one except that old windbag to take care of him.
21:55How do you know?
21:56I saw him and his partner sneaking a wagon out of town with the sheriff.
21:59I got suspicious and trailed him.
22:02We'll stop by and take care of Valero on our way to the border. Come on.
22:08I heard them leave the back room.
22:10I heard the sound of their horses galloping away.
22:12I couldn't move.
22:14But I had to get up and get them before they got to the sheriff's house.
22:18I had to.
22:29I did.
23:51Don't shoot again.
24:02I'll give up.
24:04Come out the open with your hands up.
24:05All right, Red?
24:16Bright as rain, Hoppy.
24:17Carl is his, too.
24:18Thanks to you and Hoppy.
24:20All right, Red.
24:21Get the wagon.
24:22We're taking Blake on the first leg of a long, long trip.
24:26I'll help you.
24:32Well, Sheriff, I'll see that Valera gets home.
24:34The posse will help you get Blake over to the county seat in the morning.
24:37And don't worry about a thing.
24:38You got enough evidence, your victim a dozen times.
24:41Thanks to you, Hoppy.
24:43I guess I won't be needing this anymore.
24:45Kind of wish you'd keep that badge.
24:47I might be needing your help again sometime.
24:49I'll just call and I'll be here.
24:51As for you, you big, loud, mouth, clumsy, bold, cool fool.
24:55Why, you long, man.
24:57Wait a minute.
24:58You're welcome back any time, too.
25:01You're a darn good man to have around.
25:03Particularly when the chips are down.
25:06I found out that a long time ago.
25:09So long, Sheriff.
25:09Goodbye, Hoppy.
25:10Come on, Red.
25:11Bye, Sheriff.
25:17There he goes
25:26On his way
25:28Down the moonlit trail
25:30To where Cowboy's rain
25:33Hop along, Cassidy
25:36Hop along, Cassidy
25:40He'll return
25:41Soon again
25:43There's no use to say goodbye
25:45Until then
25:48Hop along, Cassidy
25:51So long, hop along
25:54Roger
