00:00But we'll start off with our first sports betting story of the day.
00:03We'll start off with the state of New York, where some changes could be coming in the tri-state area.
00:07Legislation recently put forward that would curtail in-play wagering, a.k.a. micro-betting, on sporting events.
00:14There are already a bill being considered by the New Jersey State Assembly that would place a prohibition on micro-betting.
00:20What does it mean? It means, for those of you who like to make in-game bets, that's probably okay.
00:25But based on some very individualized results, these could be eliminated.
00:31They're different than player props. They happen within the game.
00:33It's called micro-betting. New Jersey legislation and New York could potentially move forward to ban these based on their information.
00:41And these could affect outcomes of how you could place bets on sports in the future.
00:45We'll see if that happens in the tri-state area.
00:47And if that leads to other states following, it could potentially remove some of the pitfalls involved,
00:52like we saw with the Cleveland Guardians earlier this year.
00:55The Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:57Well, they had a game last night on Monday Night Football, if you could call it a game.
01:00The Pittsburgh Steelers absolutely dominated this one.
01:03They were up almost four touchdowns late, so the score doesn't really indicate what happened in this one.
01:07Pittsburgh dominated defensively.
01:09Miami, final score, 28-15.
01:11Aaron Rodgers threw 224 yards and two touchdowns.
01:15Miami could get nothing going until the final minutes of the game.
01:18So that keeps Pittsburgh alive and well in their chase for the AFC North.
01:23Here's Mike Tomlin and Aaron Rodgers on staying in the race.
01:27Man, we love Monday Night Football.
01:30Mission accomplished.
01:31Certainly, we wanted to engineer victory, but we wanted to do it in a certain way.
01:36That was a hot football team, and they rode their run game over the last month or so.
01:41I think they had averaged 192 a game over the last five weeks.
01:43And so we needed to stop the run, and certainly we needed to run the ball in an effort to flip that component of it.
01:50And I think that made the engineering of victory more fluid.
01:53But Kenny had a fantastic game, 126 combined yards.
01:59Pat had some nice plays.
02:02Marquez had a touchdown.
02:04That was awesome.
02:04Asante Samuel had a pick.
02:08Junior, I should add, because I played against his dad.
02:10So that's kind of what I said after the game.
02:12There's some cast-offs if you look at our roster, which makes it really special.
02:16You know, Kenny Gainwell signed a next-to-nothing contract.
02:21You know, Connor Hayward, an afterthought, had a touchdown run.
02:27You know, Marquez been on a couple teams.
02:29Adam Thielen got cut.
02:30But Samuel was on the street for a long time.
02:34So it says a lot about the character of the guys we brought in.
02:38Dolphins eliminated, by the way, from playoff contention.
02:41Meanwhile, the Chiefs were eliminated on Sunday.
02:43Gardner Minshew is going to start the rest of the season for the Chiefs.
02:47Andy Reid met with the media yesterday as Patrick Mahomes had his ACL surgery.
02:53Reid gave an update as to what the future could hold for Mahomes.
02:57I think just what you said, he'll attack it.
03:00And he, just like he does everything else,
03:05there have been pretty good quarterbacks that have had the same injuries
03:09and have done pretty well after they came back.
03:13So he'll get after it.
03:17And he's got good people here to rehab him.
03:20And, you know, again, he'll be right on top of all that.
03:25Yeah, I've had a good visit with him a couple different times.
03:30So he's in a good place.
03:36You know, he always feels like he let people down,
03:40but then he comes back and he's ready for the challenge ahead,
03:45you know, which is what's real right now.
03:49You know, he's just got to get through surgery wherever it might be
03:54and then move on from there.
03:59Another coach potentially on the hot seat with his team eliminated.
04:03That is Zach Taylor of the Cincinnati Bengals.
04:06Could be the final season for him coaching in Cincinnati.
04:09That certainly remains to be seen.
04:11But he was asked that question at his press conference yesterday.
04:13That has no bearing on me whatsoever.
04:16When I tell you there's a brick wall surrounding me
04:19and isolating me from any feelings people have about me or their views on me,
04:23I can't allow that to dictate how I operate.
04:26And so, truthfully, that doesn't affect me in any way, shape, or form.
04:31And I just keep doing my job to the best of my abilities.
04:34And this year certainly hasn't been good enough with the record we're at right now.
04:38I get that.
04:39But I'm just going to keep doing everything I can to get this team ready to play on Sunday.
04:44Inside that wall and kind of how you view yourself,
04:46how do you think about that at all?
04:48I mean, at any point over the course of the year, offseason, inseason, late season,
04:52how much do you think about that?
04:53I just look at anything I can control to make this team better.
04:56That's all I can try to analyze.
04:58How you put that into words is difficult.
05:00I've certainly got through a myriad of things I try to follow
05:03to make sure every facet of this program is functioning as high as it needs to.
05:09But it's difficult for me to sit up here and put into words and how I do all that.
05:13Also, one move from the NFL today, the Jets have waived Alan Lazard,
05:18who will continue his career somewhere else, arguably, next year.
05:22All right.
05:22In the NBA last night, if you bet the triple-double on Nikola Jokic, you hit that one.
05:26You needed overtime, though, to do it.
05:27The Nuggets beat the Rockets 128-125.
05:30Houston, one-and-a-half-point favorites.
05:32This one, of course, went the extra period.
05:34Here's the line on Jokic, 39 points, 15 rebounds, and then got that final assist in the overtime period.
05:40Jokic talked about the close but big win over Houston.
05:43I mean, it's not really exhausting.
05:45It's just a different style of basketball, you know.
05:50They are physical, but they are talented, too, you know.
05:52So they have a lot of talented guys who can do a lot of different things on the court.
05:58So it's definitely a challenge.
06:02What did you do?
06:03I'm in there at the end of regulation.
06:04Regulation.
06:05Tiki-tack.
06:08Went along with the game tonight.
06:10So not surprised by the crew we had out there.
06:16When you got the technical earlier, it looked like because Jokic was pushing on Alpy and they wouldn't call.
06:21Is that part of the BPL, I guess?
06:24Yeah, I guess.
06:24I mean, just in general, I think it's a poorly officiated game I've seen in a long time.
06:30Two have no business being out there, and the crew chief is acting starstruck.
06:33So you're seeing all kinds of inconsistent calls, and I'm sure you should have got a few more ticks.
06:43May Udoka get ready to have to pay off that fine from losing that press conference.
06:48Cooper Flags' best game as a pro last night, 18 years old, and put up 40 points.
06:53What a performance for him, but the Javs beat the Mavericks 140-33.
06:57Dallas was a slight favorite in this one, but they couldn't come through in the overtime period,
07:01which makes Will Hardy not happy for the outcome.
07:05Well, you know, this is a night where I felt like the team stayed with it.
07:13Obviously, the run late in the fourth quarter was huge, and then overtime we played really solid.
07:18You know, we were undersized for a majority of the night, and so protecting the paint takes an effort from everybody.
07:25You know, I thought as the game went on, you know, it improved.
07:30They had 38 points in the paint at halftime, ended with 26 in the second half and overtime.
07:36So a big improvement there, but...
07:39Coach, what did they do to put the pressure on in overtime?
07:42Yeah, they made baskets.
07:44We didn't...
07:46We had some good looks that just didn't go down, and they capitalized that to start the...
07:52We fouled a three-point shooter to start that overtime, so they got off to a better start.
07:59But that being said, it was still a five-point game, and we just couldn't get one to fall for us to get closer.
08:05Big game for Cade Cunningham and the Pistons, 21-5.
08:11That's Detroit's record.
08:12After Cunningham had 32 points and 10 assists, they beat the Boston Celtics 112-105, did Detroit last night.
08:20Also, the Raptors took care of the Miami Heat.
08:23Heat were four-and-a-half-point favorites.
08:25Raptors win 106-96.
08:28Toronto outscores Miami 32-19 in the fourth, and the Heat has lost five games in a row.
08:33Also, NBA Cup is tonight the lone NBA game between the Spurs and the Knicks.
08:38Welcome back to Newswire here on the show.
08:39Always great to catch up with our friend Dustin Gauker, who was part of our program for a long period of time from Legal Sports Report.
08:45Now he has a new gig, a new substack.
08:47And for those of you who are following the prediction markets and sports betting, Dustin is a great follow because he's on top of it and following all of the action.
08:56And it's such a big story here in 2025, it ain't going away in 26.
08:59So we bring Dustin back here to open up the door again and have these conversations as well.
09:04Dustin, great to catch up with you.
09:05Happy holidays.
09:06Thanks for coming back on Newswire.
09:08Yeah, I'm stoked to be doing it again.
09:10All right, so Dustin, let's start off with the story of the year as we close out.
09:14The sports betting space didn't change significantly in 2025.
09:18In fact, Missouri was the only state to legally launch sports betting on December the 1st.
09:23But what we did find since the last time you and I spoke is that these prediction markets are on a freight train to no end at this point.
09:31It appears as though Robinhood, Crypto.com, CalShe, all the operators that are operating in this space want to expand it.
09:39So therefore, we're seeing the sports betting companies like FanDuel and DraftKings jump on board.
09:45But, Dustin, is it to their peril at this point?
09:48Because it does appear as though some states don't want prediction markets to be involved.
09:54And therefore, if you're getting in bed, so to speak, with some of those companies or some of those activities, you may lose your license.
10:00And that really is the big story as we end 2025.
10:04Yeah, I mean, it's wild.
10:05If we were talking this time last year, this wasn't a blip on anyone's radar, right?
10:09Their prediction markets were a small thing, basically just betting on elections.
10:12Sports betting starts happening earlier this year.
10:16And, yeah, blows up to the point that now all the major sports books are figuring out whether they want to do this and how they're doing it.
10:23We've already seen Fanatics launch its product, Fanatics Markets.
10:26It's live in a bunch of states right now.
10:30FanDuel supposedly launching before the end of the year.
10:32DraftKings also launching either later this year or early next year.
10:37And, yeah, it's kind of fraught.
10:38Like, they are in this between a rock and a hard place on all of this.
10:43They are seeing these companies, Calci and Polymarket and Crypto.com, come and try to take their lunch, try to offer sports betting in all 50 states.
10:51You know, this is a sports betting exchange.
10:53It is a different model than state-regulated sports books.
10:56But they're looking at that and saying, if this is legal, we need to be involved with this.
11:00And they've taken steps to do that.
11:01At the same time, a bunch of states have told prediction markets like Calci and Crypto.com that you can't do this here.
11:08We're going to take your license away.
11:10We saw the first evidence of that happen with Arizona's regulator taking a license away from Underdog for offering daily fantasy sports in Arizona.
11:18The knock-on effect is, does that impact Fanatics?
11:21Does it impact FanDuel and DraftKings when they launch their prediction markets?
11:24We don't know the answer to that question, but it is chaos right now in the sports betting spaces.
11:29They try to figure out what's next for all of their prediction markets offerings and how they want to tackle this market.
11:35Yeah, I think so.
11:37And look, I know that this is growing in a very big way.
11:40There's a company, Citizens, predicting that, funny, no pun intended, that this could be a $10 billion category by 2030.
11:48So, Dustin, this is really the overall question for all of this.
11:52Regulation aside, operator aside, the bottom line with companies like this is always money.
11:58And how will, I mean, I don't want to use the word get away with, but how will they be able to proceed without paying taxes like all of these other companies are and coming to these agreements?
12:08Like, to me, that is the underlying factor here is, yeah, can they continue?
12:14Sure.
12:14Can they find different ways around things?
12:16We saw this with Daily Fantasy for a long time, too.
12:18But how can they get away with not paying any taxes on this stuff?
12:21That's what I can't escape.
12:23Yeah, I mean, right now, the argument is this is legal federally, right?
12:26This is under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
12:28They don't need state say so, that they can do this.
12:31They don't need to register with states.
12:32They don't need to pay taxes at the state level.
12:34And they're just going ahead and saying, we're doing this in 50 states.
12:37Interestingly, Crypto.com has said they've pulled out of some states that have been particularly aggressive against this so that they can continue working with partners in the future, like underdog.
12:46But the thing that's kind of like there's a lot of court cases going on right now, and that's kind of in the background because things are slow there.
12:53But that is where this ends up.
12:55We are probably going to get a moment sometime in the future, exactly like we did with the fall of the sports betting ban at the federal level.
13:01We are going to get a Supreme Court case at some point that says, is this legal or not, and can this continue in the way it is?
13:08And that might be years from down the road.
13:10That may be an unsatisfying answer for a lot of people.
13:12But we're going to be in this limbo at least for a year or two and maybe longer of will this continue under the way it is right now?
13:20Is sports betting just legal for everyone over 18, 50 states?
13:24That's the way the world is right now until a court says otherwise.
13:28So it's the most interesting thing about the future is how do you game theory this out?
13:33And again, that's what the sportsbook operators are dealing with.
13:36How do we game theory this out?
13:37What will the courts do?
13:38What will the Supreme Court do?
13:39And this has all happened under the Trump administration.
13:42And if a Democrat wins in 2028, will that change things?
13:46Will they put the genie back in the bottle and say, what?
13:48We can't have sports betting under the CFTC.
13:52We can't have that.
13:53So we don't know.
13:54There's so many uncertainties about what's going to happen moving forward with prediction markets, event contracts, and sports betting.
14:01Ironically, one of the first to launch the prediction markets was the app Crypto.com.
14:06And then a lot of the other companies followed.
14:09So it shouldn't come as a surprise that maybe Coinbase and even Gemini would join the fold here.
14:15I mean, arguably, those are some of the most popular exchanges for crypto.
14:19So if Crypto.com is having this success, I could see these companies following.
14:22Yeah, I mean, there's going to be so much in cryptocurrency about this.
14:27They see this as their domain.
14:30And Robinhood isn't really a crypto company, but they are going to be the biggest player in this.
14:35They already are.
14:36They are the vast majority of any volume coming from Calci.
14:40And their prediction markets and sports betting is coming through Robinhood, which is a consumer-facing financial app.
14:45We know Coinbase, 100 million users, a huge crypto exchange.
14:49Gemini, the Winklevoss twins, who I think a lot of people will know, just launched their prediction markets.
14:55And again, down and down into crypto wallets and other exchanges.
14:58Like, you know, Calci just announced it's going to be on-chain with anything with Solana, which is another coin.
15:05There's just so much to come on the crypto side of things.
15:07So far, it's been currency and fiat via Calci, and that's been the big story.
15:12But so much more of this is going to happen.
15:14And again, like, I wonder what the sports leagues are going to think about this.
15:18Like, they've gotten comfortable with sports betting.
15:20There's sports books at state level, all cash.
15:23We know the customers.
15:24Once this is on-chain and through cryptocurrency, man, that's a whole other ball of wax.
15:28And there's going to be a lot of questions about integrity and how this all happens moving forward in sports betting for prediction markets.
15:36Dustin, how do folks subscribe to your Substack and your newsletter in this ever-changing policy and world?
15:43Yeah, you can Google me, Dustin Gauker, G-O-U-K-E-R, on Substack, the closing line, mostly about gambling, sports betting in the U.S., a little bit of prediction markets.
15:52And then another one called The Event Horizon, just about prediction markets.
15:55There's so much news doing it every day.
15:56Thanks, Dustin.
15:58Appreciate it.
15:59We'll catch up again next week.
16:00Thanks again.
16:00Cheers.
