00:00:00Welcome to Ireland's Fittest Family 2025 semi-final tonight we're dipping our toes in
00:00:12draw de port for the very first time the tide is high the pressure is rising and i hope our families
00:00:20have packed their togs and their goggles because if they want to make it to the final nobody is
00:00:24staying dry tonight except for me i am staying dry right we're not saying you promise you weren't
00:00:30going to drop me in here again please no
00:00:44it's been a very long and very winding road for our families and coaches in this year's competition
00:00:50right on the outside with trucks trenches and total chaos then we hit the bog and things got messy
00:01:00with the grown-ups leading the charge the kids did pretty okay too last bit last bit last week we
00:01:08lost our newbie coach ellen keen i'm going home come on push her up davie still has two families left in
00:01:14the game and the other coaches are sweating we're not losing the lead six families ready to compete
00:01:21and one semi-final next week our four remaining families are off to the head spinning scream
00:01:28inducing heights of avondale forest park for our grand final but tonight it's high drama on the high
00:01:35waters which family will hold on tight enough to get through and get the chance to win the title
00:01:41of ireland's fittest family 2025. tonight in our semi-finals six families will become four
00:01:52there will be two heats p1 is a total og coach affair with anna and the cars versus davy and the smiths
00:01:59versus dunica and the linehans he too will pitch davy and his second family the mcdonough's against michael
00:02:07dara and the walsh's against andrew and the mckenna's
00:02:14our semi-final will have two events in each heat event one will be a three-way boat race battle of
00:02:20the boyne event two will see the return of our infamous hang tough time trial in each event it's
00:02:27three points for first place two points for second and one point for third the points are then added
00:02:32together and the top family will go straight through to our grand final the bottom two families will
00:02:37have to face off in the eliminator to see who gets a place in our final two heats means two eliminators
00:02:43this is gonna be epic we're diving straight into semi-final action and we're better than the legendary
00:02:50river boyne we're going to head to head paddle to paddle let's find out who'll stay afloat in battle of the boyne
00:02:58thank you laura the battle of the boyne is a three-way race starting from the hugh de lacy bridge
00:03:06passing under the boyne viaduct to the finish line one kilometer down drohada's mighty boyne river
00:03:12each family is in a boat and with the help of a cox they must sink their strokes to power down river
00:03:17as fast as they can the first family down the river wins the race and those vital three points
00:03:30this is the time of the competition that i relish the bigger the event the bigger the prize
00:03:34the bigger the fall and like you can just almost see the final but we have to start well this morning
00:03:40i don't like these ones where you don't really have control over things you hit a bit of a wave
00:03:44you make a bad stroke and it really can cost you i've done a lot of water sports and swimming and
00:03:50surfing but i don't know how much that will help with the rowing it's in our hometown so we have
00:03:54to go out all guns blazing on this one hopefully we'll uh get the wind behind us i think anything can
00:03:59happen you you just never know and i'm the eternal optimist so we're just going to tear into
00:04:04see what happens donok and me our backs are literally against the wall we have to come out fighting
00:04:09or come out roy in this case oh laura it's the og coaches yes how does it feel to be back together
00:04:17again back together and we're still talking for now so it's great amazing that for now is very
00:04:21important there how are we feeling about this one again let's be completely honest three of us are
00:04:25blagging this well i mean you blag a lot yeah well i do but it's rare they do it yeah so hang on one
00:04:32family one family two families jv of course yeah how are you feeling listen it's great but um you
00:04:41don't know what's going to happen here like like once i can beat these two i'll be happy enough you
00:04:46know that's so true i am going to leave because i'm actually quite nice and dry get in your boat
00:04:52see you later we'll just stand down the elements ready to go on the battle of the boy in the cars
00:04:59wearing black elizabeth simon gareth and tom wearing purple the smiths adam sean mark and mum kathy
00:05:08and in yellow it's the linehans diarmut sean rury and ava two one paulo donovan gets the first event
00:05:16of the semi-final underway a brand new event the battle of the boy in drohada and that is a
00:05:23spectacular start and a spectacular sight right at the beginning of this race so the smiths are in
00:05:29the middle in purple that's kathy at the front of the boat there's the cars so they've got to go
00:05:391 000 meters and this is as we know from the o'donavans and all the irish rowing heroes this is so
00:05:46physically demanding the lead at the moment for the cars closest to us
00:05:49our coaches safely on board their boat and they get a ringside seat so to speak for this
00:06:01so it's all about rhythm and tempo the role of the foxes in each boat hugely important they will
00:06:08help as much as they can so the cars still leading the smiths in second and the linehans are in third
00:06:14it certainly is and everything's starting to burn the cars have a big lead don't they from the smiths
00:06:23but we're about halfway through that's the boyne viaduct coming into sight they will go under that
00:06:32and the finish line is beyond so that's still a good rhythm for the car family and it is a good healthy
00:06:41lead for them isn't it and they can see exactly to their left what's happening with the smiths in
00:06:45second and now on board with the linehans who are in third so this is where it gets difficult and the
00:06:53smiths have kind of gone out of their rhythm they had a lovely tempo you can see them all moving in
00:06:58different ways that beautiful rhythm that was there earlier on is gone and that could open the door for
00:07:04the linehans on the right to try and overtake the cars brilliant tempo and they are holding on to
00:07:10that lead and now the linehans it looks like they've gone in front they have gone in front
00:07:14dunico callahan will be delighted with this so the smiths now in third it's a big battle between these
00:07:20two it looks like it's the cars race to win or to lose so the smiths have kind of got back into a bit of
00:07:30a better rhythm now but that looks very impressive from the car family anna will be delighted but
00:07:37we're not done yet and it really is neck and neck between the smiths on the left and the linehans on
00:07:41the right second place is still up for grabs and we all know that those points are so precious come on
00:07:49laura is in a great place to watch this race you can see and hear what the cocks are doing and now
00:07:55there's been a problem there's a problem the oars come out of the water yeah there is an issue for
00:07:59adam smith at the front of the boat and now look at the boat starting to turn and this is really bad
00:08:04for the smith family they're on home turf home water in drohada but they've got to try and get this thing
00:08:09back on course and that is easier said than done and davey is not impressed at all this is going wrong
00:08:16for them and the lenehan's very much in second place now but the smiths have got it pointed the right
00:08:21way well done but the cars now have passed the orange marker and they've won three points for them
00:08:26that was impressive they led really from the start the lenehans are going to take second place
00:08:31overtaking the smiths after their mistake with the oar coming out of the water it's two points for the
00:08:37lenehan family for dunico callahan and the smiths well they'll finish it out for their one point could
00:08:43yet be very important but that's disappointing for them but credit to the smith family for getting the
00:08:47boat back on course and pointed in the right direction it could have gone really wrong for them
00:08:51but they finish it out and they are third it went wrong just near towards the end there adam lost
00:08:56his oar but that's okay it's not a big deal we'll just take it and move on what happened
00:09:03we were doing so well at the start and then we all just panicked well i panicked especially
00:09:07myself i don't know if the rest of the family did we tried not to stop but there was nothing really i
00:09:11could have done i tried to pull it out and then i had to get sean to help me pull it out they know i was
00:09:14misfortunate more than anything else so it's all about surviving and getting through to the next day and that's all
00:09:19we'll be trying to do adam there was nothing you could do all right you really tried your best
00:09:24well done lads i'll chat to you soon feels like it's the pick on adam's story here
00:09:29lenehan's second place congratulations and where's your coach
00:09:35apologies sorry sorry sorry you know you're not on your holidays i was on a boat with anna and davey
00:09:40it was great fun i had a great time lads so doing as well as you guys did i'm sure you have to be
00:09:45incredibly proud of that yeah no we are it's fair i think we all tried our best and we all did well
00:09:49so we're delighted congratulations all right best of luck now this afternoon i'll chat to you then
00:09:54anyway so there i am right davey's on the boat oh you were great that was unbelievable i love how
00:10:01calm cool and collected you are you're like yeah no but we've been here before so you know hold it
00:10:06together how are you feeling yeah we're feeling good delighted yeah it couldn't have gone any better
00:10:11it went really well we couldn't have uh we won handy enough it was a phenomenal performance you have
00:10:16been here before so how are you feeling right now well i think we're a bit calmer this time than we were
00:10:22in the previous round top points now but we've been in the exact same position in the quarterfinals took
00:10:28top points in the first race and then everything fell apart for the second one so now it's about okay
00:10:33job done round one let's move on now now it's time for the scoreboard after our first event anna's
00:10:42cars are top of the table with three points dunnick has linehans of two points and davy smiths are in
00:10:49last place with just one point but it's all to hang for
00:10:53work normally being told you're too clingy is a bad thing but in hang tough it's the only way to win
00:11:04it's time to watch our families desperately cling on to their chance to make it to the finals
00:11:12hang tough is a test of willpower and endurance the clock starts when everybody's feet leave the ground
00:11:18all family members must hang over six meters or 20 feet above the freezing water for as long as they
00:11:24possibly can remember this isn't about being the last person up there the times of the four families
00:11:29will be combined so every second counts first up are the linehans now they came second in battle of
00:11:39the boyne so they'll need to come first in this if they want to avoid the eliminator if any of the other
00:11:44coaches can manage to bluff hang tough best of luck to them it's a complete unknown like the coaching
00:11:51point grab the bar hold on to it for as long as possible and that's it really isn't it look i'm not
00:11:56going to be shouting and roaring actually but with the big thing for us we have to keep the four of us
00:12:01up there for as long as possible so claw in again i'm the fall guy i'm the weak link here the lads have
00:12:08been training in fair play to them have you guys been practicing this one yeah i'm doing a bit of practice
00:12:12home really finding anything hang off and doing our best to get our times up we have a hang tough bar
00:12:17at home so we've all been using it i can't lie i haven't been training too much but i was kind of
00:12:21hoping this wouldn't come up we win this we're avoiding an eliminator yeah there honestly laura
00:12:26there is a great incentive i'm hoping for the lennon's to do something special here we could do with
00:12:31keeping the bit of good luck going and hopefully we get it here for the linehans from left to right
00:12:37it's sean rory eva and diarmouth in the zone now family take your grip so here we go i absolutely
00:12:47love this event i'd be really bad at it but i love it here we go raise the crane so this is always the
00:12:55odd bit for the families they can hear the crane the engine starting up and then they're lifted out over
00:13:02the water and the crane will come to a stop when they are six meters above the river boyne that's
00:13:1120 feet so there is ava and that's sean with his brother rory beside him and diarmouth closest to us
00:13:18now he said he feels he's the weak link i don't think he will be all looking strong all looking the kids
00:13:25have been training for this training is all well and good but to try and replicate these conditions
00:13:31there's a breeze there it's very very tricky but they look good it's a good solid start diarmouth
00:13:39focusing on his breathing relax into a roar rory with his legs crossed
00:13:45donica just nice and calm they're approaching a minute
00:13:52remember the four times will be added together so there's a minute done and everybody looks good
00:13:58really good nobody changing hand position on the bar
00:14:04this is a good start sean and rory look very steady
00:14:10so does diarmouth now grimace on ava's face no distractions the pain is starting to kick in
00:14:17and this really really hurts you know ava is gone in a minute and 24 so she's the first to go down
00:14:24and as we know from past years that can possibly put some of the other family members off and diarmouth's
00:14:29gone too just three seconds later 127 it's now down to the two lads 16 year old rory and 19 year old sean
00:14:37stay on it stay on it rory we need to roll out there's some movement we need you big time
00:14:45which ain't a good sign it's calmed down again though
00:14:50and it's always impressive rory more movement from him
00:14:55approaching two minutes and i just wonder how long more rory has in him sean now with the eyes open
00:15:01we're no one staring down come on into the water it's very cold water and rory is really battling
00:15:08with this for all he has worked he's doing well to steady it down again now some movement from sean
00:15:14too oh and sean's gone he tried to just take and he did take his right arm off the bar and that didn't
00:15:21work at all went straight in it's now down to rory the youngest member of the family we need every second
00:15:26and rory oh and he's gone too two minutes and 22. added all together it's 7 24. we'll find out over
00:15:33the next few minutes just how good that is it feels good i'm absolutely delighted sean took a big risk
00:15:40he went big and it didn't pay off for him i kind of got it for him because if it had come off it would
00:15:44have been worth it but it didn't you went to change your grip and we've seen this happen so often where
00:15:49you're like no i can do it and then gone yeah i saw one fella a few years ago do it i was like
00:15:54i'll be able to wrap it i i i i couldn't i prefer not to talk too much about me trying to do one
00:16:00handed it'll be a long journey home for him to clock anyway he'll hear all about it do you want to go
00:16:04how do you think they did yeah i'm delighted the lenin's there every second we bought obviously there's
00:16:09brilliant families and if they can do better than that fair play to them one thing i'll take from the
00:16:13two events today with the lenin's we've given them everything we're moving along nicely we're confident
00:16:18if we're in the eliminator we'll take it on 60 seconds of hard work is your milestone keep with
00:16:25it sean stay there another 10 seconds sean
00:16:32welcome back to ireland's fittest family semi-final now before the break we saw dunica's lenin
00:16:44family lose their grip eventually on hang tough but there's still two more to go before we'll find out
00:16:53who's in the first of tonight's eliminator so let's get cracking
00:16:56next up in hang tough for anna's car family they sailed into first place in battle of the
00:17:04boyne so if they hold on for long enough here they guarantee themselves a place in the grand final
00:17:09i'm hoping that they're all used to doing chin-ups and pull-ups because that's the kind of
00:17:13muscles that they need to engage and the biggest most crucial golden rule of hang tough do not adjust
00:17:20your grip take a feel of the bar have a think about where the hands you know think about in
00:17:24relation to your shoulders where you want those hands to go because once they stick they stick
00:17:28you do not move at any stage then how are you feeling about this i think we're feeling good
00:17:32it's like that ready to go through the pain barrier i think everyone here is is going to be in pain in
00:17:36in a couple of minutes time so it's about how long we can we can sit in that not really feeling
00:17:40confident we're all kind of big bodied so we're carrying a lot of kgs i want the cars to go straight
00:17:46to the the finals for me if nothing else because i i can't handle the stress today ready to go for
00:17:52the cars from left to right it's elizabeth simon gareth and tom family take your grip
00:18:04the cars were first in battle of the boy once the feet leave the ground the clock starts ticking
00:18:12excellent well done
00:18:16so out they go
00:18:17as you can see it's a lovely day andrade but there is a breeze there and they will sway a little
00:18:27bit which in its own way is off-putting that's gareth staring up at that bar get your breathing right
00:18:34now so anna's big message was do not adjust your grip
00:18:38which was so the whole thing is making me think about that which is exactly right
00:18:44so you should have a move it is at that point
00:18:48yeah
00:18:50what i did
00:18:54oh
00:18:55yeah
00:18:56yeah
00:18:57you know
00:18:58that's the only one
00:18:59yeah
00:19:00let's go
00:19:02The second to take on hang tough. 7.24 was the Linnehan's time. Oh, now some movement from Tom. He's steady down again. But is that a sign that he's struggling? I think it is. And there's more movement from Tom Carr. And it's first down is Simon. That's a surprise. Simon went down first. I thought it was going to be Tom.
00:19:22And Tom is hanging on for all he's worth at this point. And he goes four seconds later. One minute and 11. It's down to Gareth and Elizabeth.
00:19:35So Gareth has looked steady all the way through. In the final. Paula Dunham is just telling Tom Carr to move out of the way or move out from underneath Gareth if he comes down on top of him.
00:19:45Here. Shoulder blade. Elizabeth, the number one ranked triathlete in the country. But this is not a triathlon event. Oh, I wonder here. Gareth. Oh, the grip goes. And he is in. In one minute and 37. So it's all down to Elizabeth Carr.
00:20:03So 7.24 is a long way away. And Elizabeth has gone too. One minute and 42 seconds. A combined total of 5.37.
00:20:11It was probably about as difficult as we expected it to be. We weren't that confident coming into a hang tough. Just all of our strengths don't really lie with grip strengths.
00:20:22How are you feeling? Not good. To be honest. Didn't really go according to plan. Kind of got tough a lot earlier than I was expecting.
00:20:29The one thing you can practice is when they lift you off the first 20, 30 seconds. You're not really sure what to do. Once you're up there, it's kind of just trying to take your mind out of it.
00:20:36I was kind of expecting a little bit of a lull where I could just kind of settle into it. But I was feeling it from the start.
00:20:43It's over. And if we're in an eliminator, that's what we need to get focused on. Because we're still in with a chance of making the final. Just I know it's not what they wanted.
00:20:50If we're in the eliminator, we'll deal with it. We've been there before. I know the cars have what it takes to be in the final. Now we just need to fight for it.
00:20:56Last up in our first semi-final heat tonight is Davey and the Smith family. There's a lot riding on this as they came last in the race earlier and they need a good time in this event.
00:21:09Tell me, how are you feeling? Nervous. Do you? Yeah, I do feel nervous. But I'll just do my best. It's all I can do.
00:21:16You really need to win this. So, like, we've got to set time in our heads of what we're doing. Are we going to tell me any of this kind of stuff?
00:21:23Well, Davey's giving us the time, yeah. But I think that stays among the five of us.
00:21:26OK, fair enough. I'm not in the click.
00:21:28I need the boys to hang on probably a minute and a half to two and a half in that bracket someplace.
00:21:33Anything can happen. So we're just going to take this event for what it is and we'll be the best we can be. And you'll never know.
00:21:39Lining up for the Smith family again from left to right. Kathy, Adam, Mark and Sean.
00:21:47Remember, talk to me. If you're under pressure or a bit out, just talk to me and we'll get you there.
00:21:51So you can hear the instructions in the background from Davey Fitz.
00:21:55The Smith family. It just took them about five minutes to get here today. They're from Drogheda.
00:22:01On home ground. But they were last in the Battle of the Boyne and they need a big time here.
00:22:077.24. Still the longest time in Hang Tuff by the Linehan family. They were first to take it on.
00:22:19The Smiths are now out over the water. The crane will come to a stop.
00:22:27And then it's down to these four.
00:22:29That's it. Well done. Well done, Kathy. Well done, Adam. Well done, guys. Well done.
00:22:32So Kathy on the left. Half a minute done. Just now.
00:22:38Well done. Just stay in there. Good stuff. Good stuff. Good stuff.
00:22:41Sean. And there's Kathy again.
00:22:43Just stay in there. Good stuff. Good stuff.
00:22:45You can see that the wind rippling on the shirts. There is a breeze there.
00:22:49Adam, we'll just get another 30-30 seconds now.
00:22:52Well, good lad. I don't know you can.
00:22:53Davey focusing on Adam now as they approach a minute.
00:22:57That's good. Well done.
00:22:58Kathy deep in concentration. And Sean just...
00:23:01Well done. Well done. Well done.
00:23:02He seems to be in bother already. That is a surprise.
00:23:04That's actually really good now. Just stay in there. Stay in with him.
00:23:06So they've all done a minute. Well done.
00:23:09So far so good for the Smiths.
00:23:11Just stay there, Kathy. Well done. Kathy just need another 10 seconds.
00:23:14So, oh, Kathy seems to be struggling now.
00:23:16And she's gone into the water.
00:23:18One minute and nine seconds.
00:23:19It puts the pressure on Adam, Mark, and Sean.
00:23:21Let's get 20 more seconds now.
00:23:23Davey focusing very much on Adam.
00:23:25And I think he's in trouble. He is in bother.
00:23:28And Adam drops in one minute and 20 seconds.
00:23:32Just two to go. Now movement from Mark up there.
00:23:36Sean beside him. Sean is really fighting with this.
00:23:40Doing all he can.
00:23:42Mark's only 15 years of age.
00:23:44This has been some experience for him.
00:23:45But now he's gone into the water.
00:23:47One minute and 32.
00:23:48This doesn't look good.
00:23:50For the Smith family, unless Sean can do something really remarkable.
00:23:53And he's trying his very best.
00:23:54He is hanging on there.
00:23:57But he can't hold on any longer.
00:23:59Sean goes in.
00:24:00One minute and 42.
00:24:01It's a combined total of five minutes and 43 seconds.
00:24:04I'm really proud of myself, actually.
00:24:05I lasted longer than I thought I would.
00:24:07It was actually better than expected.
00:24:09You must be so proud of yourself.
00:24:11I'm proud of myself.
00:24:11You really did amazing.
00:24:12Really better than I expected.
00:24:13The most difficult part for me was when your hands start slipping.
00:24:16Your grip strength sort of loosens a little bit.
00:24:19And once you start, that's going.
00:24:20It's gone.
00:24:22Davey, how are we fixed?
00:24:23I think we're being an eliminator.
00:24:25But I think we did well there.
00:24:26I think we're facing the eliminator.
00:24:28That's not a bad thing.
00:24:29That's okay.
00:24:30To win for the family, the more of them you do, the better.
00:24:32And here's how the scoreboard stands after the second event.
00:24:39The Linehans came first in Hangtough, bringing them into the lead with five points.
00:24:45The Kars came last, which brings them to four points.
00:24:49And the Smits came second, which gives them three points.
00:24:52This means that the Linehans go straight through to the final, leaving the Kars and the Smits to battle it out in the dreaded eliminator.
00:24:59With Heat 1 events over, it's time for me to tell the families the final result.
00:25:10Hi, families.
00:25:11Hi, coaches.
00:25:13Well done.
00:25:14You've done absolutely unbelievable so far today.
00:25:17But it is finally time for me to reveal the family, who will be the first to go through to the final of Ireland's Fittest Family 2025.
00:25:29Congratulations to Dunica and the Linehans.
00:25:32You're going through to the final.
00:25:35I'm absolutely delighted.
00:25:36Everyone performed the best they possibly could.
00:25:39I'm happy with the family's performance.
00:25:41I'm proud of the lads, to be fair to them.
00:25:42They put in a good effort.
00:25:43Which means Anna and the Kars and Davey and the Smits get ready for our first eliminator of the semi-finals.
00:25:52Best of luck.
00:25:53I feel that we've done this interview already, except it was in the quarterfinals.
00:25:57This is a total deja vu moment.
00:25:59I'm not sure how many eliminators are left in my lifetime.
00:26:02Hopefully this will be the last one.
00:26:03We're a bit devastated that we're going into the eliminator, but we're well able to do it.
00:26:07So we're just going to have to push on and get it done.
00:26:13Now, Anna's Kars and Davey Smiths are about to go head-to-head in the first eliminator here at Drada Port.
00:26:22One last push for that place in the final.
00:26:25But who will triumph when all these shipping containers contain?
00:26:29It's pain.
00:26:30The Port Eliminator begins with a bang.
00:26:36Both families have to pull a 5.5 ton forklift for 20 metres.
00:26:42Then they have to pick up a 30 kilogram log and run down the length of the 200 metres course.
00:26:48Next, it's a climb up and over a series of containers.
00:26:51Each of those are 2.6 metres in height.
00:26:54Some single height and some double height.
00:26:56Next, it's a sprint to the 3-metre wall, which they have to climb over before they run on and face our signature wraps.
00:27:04The first family, with all four members at the top, win a place in the grand final.
00:27:09There's a lot of things that could actually go wrong in this race, but the ultimate prize is at stake.
00:27:22One of the coveted places in Ireland's fittest family final.
00:27:25That's why they've made this hard, because you're now having to fight and prove that you're good enough to be in the final.
00:27:30We're not out yet, but we absolutely now have to fight with everything that we have to make sure that we are one of the families there.
00:27:38This is a big one for us. We know we're probably one of the favourites for the competition. Let's go. Let's see how we're at.
00:27:45Everybody thinks we're going out of this. Guys, just absolutely. Please, just let's go at this, okay?
00:27:50I feel very nervous for this. Yeah. The containers seem a bit daunting.
00:27:54This is your last shot of making it to the final.
00:27:58I know. I just don't want to go home. I really can't stress it enough. I don't want to go home.
00:28:04The stakes have never been higher, but the reward has never been greater.
00:28:09Ready to go in black are the cars. Elizabeth, Gareth, Tom and Simon.
00:28:13Wearing purple, it's the Smiths. Sean, Adam, Mark and Mum, Cathy.
00:28:18Three, two, one.
00:28:22Our Heat One Eliminator is underway, and this is going to be quite the start,
00:28:26because that forklift truck weighs 5.5 tonnes, and they have to pull it 20 metres.
00:28:33So the Smiths, well, there was a little bit of movement there, and now the cars have got that moving.
00:28:38This really shocks them into action right at the start of the Eliminator.
00:28:44A place in the grand final at stake. The Smiths now have their forklift moving as well.
00:28:50Davey and Anna both roaring at their respective families.
00:28:53The cars have a lead.
00:28:58They really are driving through, and they have a good rhythm and tempo now,
00:29:02but the Smiths have got stuck.
00:29:03They did have it moving a few seconds ago, but now it's stopped completely.
00:29:09An opportunity for the cars.
00:29:10They have moved the forklift over the 20 metres, and they're away,
00:29:14and the Smiths are stuck here.
00:29:15There is a tiny bit of movement there.
00:29:17You can see it, but not enough, and the cars can open up and build a healthy lead now.
00:29:24They're taking this at a steady pace, but the Smiths, this is going wrong for them.
00:29:30So Davey just changing the approach a little bit,
00:29:32but with every second, the cars are pulling away from the Smiths.
00:29:38So they're able to do that, just really at their own pace, aren't they, now?
00:29:43So Davey changing the order a little bit, the rope wrapped around the back,
00:29:46and off they go.
00:29:49Or do they?
00:29:50So the cars have got rid of that 30-kilogram log,
00:29:54and now they come down to these containers.
00:29:58Strategy clear thinking is the message from Anagiri,
00:30:00but the Smiths are still struggling to get that forklift over the 20 metres.
00:30:05Cathy taking off the gloves now.
00:30:07Maybe that might help.
00:30:08Davey is just trying to cajole them, encourage them.
00:30:13Their arms will be really fatigued as well after the Battle of the Boyne event.
00:30:17The cars just going at their own pace at the moment.
00:30:20They can't even see the Smiths behind them.
00:30:23Anna had a check down the course, but the Smiths are still stuck,
00:30:26and this is going very badly wrong for them.
00:30:28They've been absolutely brilliant in this competition.
00:30:31Now they've got it going.
00:30:32There's a bit of movement there, a good rhythm, a little bit of a fall there,
00:30:35but that is Simon. He's okay.
00:30:39So each of these 2.6 metres high,
00:30:42and there's two of those double stacks.
00:30:44They've all got rid of the gloves now at this point,
00:30:45and they are very nearly at the 20-metre mark with this forklift truck.
00:30:51Tom Carr goes up to the top of that container.
00:30:54They've just got to keep doing what they're doing.
00:30:56It's all very methodical.
00:31:00So now the Smiths have finally completed that challenge with that forklift truck.
00:31:05They'll never want to see another one again,
00:31:07and now they've got to run down here, grab this 30-kilogram log,
00:31:10and run 200 metres with it.
00:31:12The Carr's just slow and steady.
00:31:15They've paced themselves all the way through.
00:31:17That's one of those double container pyramids.
00:31:21So Davey is running with his family down the 200 metres.
00:31:26He looks in shape too, doesn't he?
00:31:27So that's Elizabeth Carr.
00:31:34So they get down to that barrel.
00:31:36They have a lot of ground to make up,
00:31:38but we've seen them do it in this competition this year.
00:31:42They have made up big deficits before.
00:31:45This is the biggest of the lot, but the Smiths can get it done.
00:31:49And here they are at the first container.
00:31:51That was a brilliant leap, wasn't it?
00:31:53Up to the top.
00:31:54So they've just got to hold their concentration,
00:31:58hold their nerve and keep going,
00:31:59and hope that there's a mistake from the Carr family.
00:32:03They haven't made one so far,
00:32:04so that's the first container done by the Smiths.
00:32:07A bit of a fall from Cathy,
00:32:08and she's held back to her feet.
00:32:10What a day she's had.
00:32:11What a brilliant competition they have had,
00:32:14and so have the Carr's,
00:32:15and they are closing in on the place in the grand final.
00:32:19Tom Carr up to the top.
00:32:20So there's two of those double container pyramids.
00:32:23The Smiths at the first of those now.
00:32:29Now, that's it.
00:32:29You just never know.
00:32:32Lower and back, let's go.
00:32:33The Carrs go back to the quarterfinal.
00:32:35They had a big problem at that high wall,
00:32:38and this wall, you'll see shortly,
00:32:40is three metres high.
00:32:42So the Smiths still doing their stuff.
00:32:45It's all very connected.
00:32:46There's a clear plan from the Smith family,
00:32:48but there is from the Carrs too.
00:32:50So Tom's up at the top of the wall.
00:32:51Can the Smiths be absolutely perfect here?
00:32:55They've looked very good on these containers so far.
00:32:59But they are under pressure.
00:33:00There's two of the Carr family up at the top of that wall.
00:33:04They've had plenty of time to plan out a strategy here
00:33:07after the mistake of the quarterfinal,
00:33:08which very nearly cost them.
00:33:10Here come the Smiths.
00:33:12That's Cathy.
00:33:14And now that's a brilliant leap up to the top.
00:33:16That's Simon, who's got up there.
00:33:19So only Elizabeth is down the other side.
00:33:21And then it's just the ramp after that.
00:33:23Davey has a look down the course.
00:33:25He can see where the Carrs are.
00:33:28The Smiths have another double container stack to do.
00:33:30First time up for Simon Carr.
00:33:32That was absolutely brilliant.
00:33:34And the pressure grows on the Smith family.
00:33:37The Carrs have been pretty perfect all the way through.
00:33:39Second to go is the Algarath.
00:33:41That is absolutely brilliant as well.
00:33:42Two out of two.
00:33:44Here come the Smiths, though.
00:33:45But it seems it's too little, too late.
00:33:48The Carrs have two up at the top of the ramp.
00:33:51The Smiths are doing all they can to try and close the gap.
00:33:53Here is Elizabeth Carr.
00:33:55And she's up first time as well, is she?
00:33:58Yes, she is.
00:33:59They have been absolutely flawless around this really difficult course.
00:34:03The Smiths, well, it went wrong right at the start with the forklift.
00:34:06Here goes Tom Carr to make it four out of four.
00:34:09They each got up first time.
00:34:11And Tom Carr is very nearly there.
00:34:13And he is there.
00:34:14That is such a performance from the Carrs.
00:34:16A statement victory.
00:34:17And they are through to the grand final.
00:34:20They led right from the start.
00:34:22Never in doubt.
00:34:23Superb.
00:34:24Well done.
00:34:26Yes.
00:34:27Climbed a mountain and I turned around.
00:34:31Disappointing.
00:34:32It's just a truck bullet.
00:34:33The start was tough.
00:34:34Our upper body wasn't as good as the Carrs.
00:34:36But that's for the family.
00:34:37Some things suit you, some things don't.
00:34:39Obviously, we're a little bit disappointed.
00:34:41But I think we can be super proud of ourselves for how we've done over the last three rounds.
00:34:44And, yeah, it is what it is.
00:34:46Cathy, I'm going to miss you so much.
00:34:50Lads, how was it to do that with your mom?
00:34:52It's an experience like a handful of people in the country get.
00:34:54And I think it's just something that we look back on in years to come that she's proved not only to herself now but to everyone that she can absolutely smash everything.
00:35:02And she's absolutely amazing.
00:35:03So we're super proud of her as a whole family.
00:35:05I'm actually going to cry.
00:35:06I'm going to talk to you again after this.
00:35:09Davey, please say something.
00:35:11Are they the right?
00:35:13And I mean that, you know, you just give yourself a tough time.
00:35:15You're actually incredible.
00:35:16I'm very proud of myself for doing it.
00:35:18It's totally out of my comfort zone, way out of my comfort zone.
00:35:21It's not something I'd ever do again.
00:35:22But I've done it and I'm delighted I've done it with the three boys.
00:35:27Anna, here again, over here.
00:35:30I can finally smile for the first time today.
00:35:33It is relieved.
00:35:34You can breathe again.
00:35:35Oh, my God.
00:35:36Three words.
00:35:37Relieved, relieved, relieved.
00:35:39What was lucky for us was that we had the pull at the start.
00:35:43So when we were able to take the lead with the log, it gave all of them a chance to get their breath back so then they could attack the containers at pace.
00:35:50Lads, talk to me.
00:35:51How does it feel to have secured your spot in the final?
00:35:54Yeah, it feels great.
00:35:55Buzzing, to be fair.
00:35:56The start was big for us.
00:35:58It felt bad for the Smiths.
00:35:59That element of the course kind of went against them.
00:36:01But happy with the effort everyone put in.
00:36:03Anna, the cards are through to the final of our Linsman's family.
00:36:08Come on now.
00:36:09You can give me a bit more than that, lads.
00:36:10You don't have to.
00:36:11They're gracious winners.
00:36:12Well done.
00:36:13I'm so proud of you.
00:36:14You know what?
00:36:15That was an explosive eliminator.
00:36:17And I enjoyed it so much that I think you should stick around and we should do it all over again.
00:36:21They're going to be tipping each other fairly soon.
00:36:29That's the job.
00:36:29Into the valley, come on.
00:36:44Oh, this is the life.
00:36:47The sun in my face and the wind in my hair on the Boyne Riviera.
00:36:52Oh.
00:36:53Oh, is that Davie?
00:36:56Welcome back to Ireland's fittest family.
00:36:59The tension is rising as we're about to find out who's going to grab those last two spots in our grand final.
00:37:17Hi, lads.
00:37:18What are you doing?
00:37:19We have a whole afternoon of Davie ahead of us, so we need to center ourselves before the storm.
00:37:24Yeah, the intensity is great and all, but we just like to kind of kick out a little bit of the shouting and screaming.
00:37:29Okay.
00:37:30It's going to take a lot more than that, but best of luck.
00:37:32Yeah.
00:37:32See you later.
00:37:32Cheers.
00:37:33We're about to kick off Heat 2 and here's the line-up.
00:37:46That's far better.
00:37:47Namaste.
00:37:48Namaste, Davie.
00:37:52We're about to kick off Heat 2 and here's the line-up.
00:37:55It's Davie and the McDonough's.
00:37:58Versus Michael Dara and the Walsh's.
00:38:01Versus Andrew and the McKenna's.
00:38:03Happy days, we're in the water.
00:38:08This is the space they're comfortable in and that's all you want, especially for Amy, the man, like this is her bread and butter.
00:38:12When I kayak, if I'm going backwards, there's something wrong.
00:38:15So the fact that I'm going to be in a boat going backwards is going to be really bonkers.
00:38:20I haven't a clue what's going to happen here.
00:38:22Feeling confident going into it.
00:38:24A little bit nervous, but mostly just puzzling, like puzzling to get going.
00:38:28It is going to be a challenge.
00:38:29We accept everything we do in this show is going to be a challenge, so we'll embrace it as we have all the rest of them.
00:38:33If we stick together as a team and work as a team, we'll hopefully stand a good chance.
00:38:37I'd be surprised if the McKenna's get panicked at all.
00:38:39They seem like the picture of calmness, so they'll be fine, I'd say.
00:38:43Welcome to your first semi-final in Ireland with us family, lads.
00:38:46Yeah, so far so good.
00:38:48Yeah, we're here to take part and do a little half day, so I'm very excited about half day.
00:38:53Davies is exhausted.
00:38:54I feel like Davies aged terribly this morning.
00:38:57I feel great.
00:38:58Two families is probably one too many, so I'm down to one team like the rest of the coaches, so I need to get them through.
00:39:04Can you believe that you've actually made it to the semi-finals of Ireland with us family, Michael Dare?
00:39:09Yeah, it's been a bit of a rollercoaster.
00:39:11We kind of got there by their fingertips to get our last mammy up that ramp.
00:39:14So we're looking forward to this one.
00:39:16The Walshs have a bit of a history in the water.
00:39:17So hopefully it'll go well.
00:39:19Wait, what's their history in the water?
00:39:20Amy is like a big kayaker, and the two boys were in like a round club for three years as well.
00:39:25Okay.
00:39:25You're welcome that I got that information out of them.
00:39:27So you're set up.
00:39:28My confidence has gone from here to here immediately.
00:39:31Anything you'd like to share back with Michael Dare?
00:39:32No?
00:39:33No, keep those.
00:39:34We're better on land, I think, than the McDonaghs, to be honest.
00:39:36In green, it's the Walshs.
00:39:39Michael, Alfie, Aidan, and mum, Amy.
00:39:42The McDonaghs wear orange.
00:39:44It's Pat, Matthew, Daniel, and Leah.
00:39:47The McKennas are in red.
00:39:48Sharon, Caelan, Cormac, and Colleen.
00:39:501,000 metres.
00:39:56Three precious points for the winners.
00:40:00And off we go.
00:40:02And, well, the McDonaghs, you can see in the centre there, have come across towards the Walsh family.
00:40:07They're very close together.
00:40:09There's clear water for the McKennas.
00:40:11But the Walshs, well, I wonder, would you make them favourites here?
00:40:14Two of the lads had experience with their local rowing club.
00:40:19The McDonaghs for Davy Fitz, quietly confident beforehand, as were the McKennas.
00:40:26So a big shout-out to Invercolpa Rowing Club, who gave us the use of their boats,
00:40:32and also gave the families a tutorial, a very important tutorial, before the race started.
00:40:37They each have a cox in the boat to help them with the tempo and the rhythm, which is so important.
00:40:46So there's very little between them, really.
00:40:49Sure, there's not.
00:40:49Look at that.
00:40:51The coaches are enjoying this, but that is something else.
00:40:57Early stages, but they can't be separated.
00:41:00All going very nicely, all going at a good pace.
00:41:03The McDonaghs in the centre, they're veering across.
00:41:05Well, the McDonaghs had the lead there, but they are drifting over towards the Walshs' boat,
00:41:11and they're right beside each other.
00:41:12The oars are tipping, and Davy's loving that.
00:41:21On board with the McDonaghs.
00:41:23So Michael Darragh is coaching the Walshs, and now the McDonaghs have opened up a lead on the Walshs,
00:41:28and they're leading at the moment.
00:41:30The McDonaghs in second.
00:41:33The McDonaghs still veering off course a little bit.
00:41:35Now they're trying to just straighten it up and get a bit of clear water between themselves and the Walsh family.
00:41:40They're third.
00:41:41They've lost.
00:41:42Come on, Pat!
00:41:43Come on!
00:41:44Andrew reacting to his McKenna family.
00:41:46They've dropped to third at the moment.
00:41:50So look at that.
00:41:52The Walshs kind of veering off course as well.
00:41:54They've straightened it up again.
00:41:56But the McDonaghs are leading.
00:41:57For Davy Fitz, Michael Darragh, happier with the rhythm that the Walsh family are in now.
00:42:09So the McDonaghs are leading, and the tempo is really good, but the Walshs not giving up.
00:42:16We haven't seen them give up at all in this competition.
00:42:18And now they're moving nicely, and they're closing on the McDonaghs on the left-hand side there.
00:42:22The McKenna's still very much in third place.
00:42:25Come on!
00:42:25Well, you need some power in this boat!
00:42:28The Cox in the McKenna boat wants more power, and they're applying the power now.
00:42:35There you're doing it!
00:42:36Come on, man!
00:42:36So Andrew delighted with the reaction from his family as they respond to dropping to third.
00:42:42And they're closing on the McDonaghs in the center there.
00:42:45They're still leading.
00:42:46The Walshs on board with them.
00:42:48They are third.
00:42:49Come on!
00:42:52Serious test of fitness and endurance.
00:42:55The finishing marker is in sight.
00:43:00Really intense battle between these families, and the McKenna's have gone from third to first.
00:43:04They're now leading over on the far side.
00:43:06The McDonaghs trying to respond.
00:43:08Their lead has been wiped out, and it was a healthy lead just a few hundred meters ago.
00:43:13But the McKenna's are powering forward.
00:43:15Now the McDonaghs have reacted their level with them again, it seems.
00:43:18Maybe the McDonaghs fractionally in front, but they've lost control of the boat a bit.
00:43:21They've gone a little offline.
00:43:22I'm done, Leah!
00:43:23I'm done!
00:43:24That's you!
00:43:25This going right down to the final meters.
00:43:28Michael Taramagali enjoying this maybe more than he should.
00:43:31His Walsh family are in third.
00:43:33But there's nothing between the McDonaghs in the center and the McKenna's on the right.
00:43:36Drive with your legs!
00:43:37This is really intense.
00:43:39A fantastic race.
00:43:41It has been right from the start.
00:43:42But the McKenna's have opened up a big lead again.
00:43:45They've found the energy and the effort from somewhere.
00:43:48Dig in!
00:43:48That's your dig in!
00:43:50They are trying to dig in, and look at that.
00:43:51The McKenna's now pulling away.
00:43:54They really have come good.
00:43:56And here we are in the last 20 meters.
00:43:58You heard the Cogs call that out for them.
00:44:00Just these final meters for the McKenna family to try and win the battle of the Boeing.
00:44:04The McDonaghs had the lead not so long ago.
00:44:07In second.
00:44:07The Walshs are in third.
00:44:09But the Walshs are closing on the McDonaghs, it seems.
00:44:14If you look on the left of your picture.
00:44:17The McKenna's heading towards the finishing marker.
00:44:20And there they are.
00:44:21They win and take three points.
00:44:23That was some performance.
00:44:24Another victory for the McKenna family.
00:44:26Three points.
00:44:28Now it's down to second and third.
00:44:29The McDonaghs driving and pulling for all their work.
00:44:33The Walshs are closing on them.
00:44:35It's very, very tight between these two.
00:44:37And it's tight towards the bank as well.
00:44:40And it's second place for the McDonaghs.
00:44:42Only just the Walshs gave it everything.
00:44:45And they really put a huge effort in.
00:44:47But they finished third.
00:44:48Sure, look.
00:44:49We just got a bit squeezed and a bit squashed.
00:44:52And we're not sore losers.
00:44:53But we're just frustrated that it didn't go away really.
00:44:55Obviously not the result that you wanted here.
00:44:58So tell me, what was it like being in the water?
00:45:01I think, look, we just got the wrong lane.
00:45:04And we just got pinned too much to the side.
00:45:06We couldn't get our oar in.
00:45:07It is what it is.
00:45:08There's nothing we can do.
00:45:09It's in the rear view mirror now.
00:45:10This didn't go well for us.
00:45:11But if round two goes well, we can get a half day here.
00:45:14We can go home into the final.
00:45:16You're already on a half day.
00:45:17I didn't have plans.
00:45:19We can have a great hang tough.
00:45:21And then come out and we're laughing.
00:45:24So let's just draw a line and move on.
00:45:26We have to.
00:45:28Pat, get over here to me right now, okay?
00:45:29Because I need to talk to you first.
00:45:30How did it feel to have your name chanted so much by Davy Fitz?
00:45:35My heart was so loud, I couldn't hear myself.
00:45:37Never mind Davy Fitz, to be quite honest.
00:45:40We give it our best shot, to be quite honest.
00:45:41I emptied the tank, you know, personally.
00:45:43My focus was just keep breathing, keep breathing.
00:45:45And then that was it.
00:45:46I thought we'd struggle in it, but we did pretty well.
00:45:48We were in the lead for a lot of it.
00:45:49And great result for us, but it all comes down to hang tough.
00:45:53Oh, McEnnis.
00:45:56Oh, my God.
00:45:58You must be absolutely delighted, are you?
00:45:59Thank God we've had over us.
00:46:00I think this was tough mentally as well.
00:46:03It was definitely physically, but just to keep going,
00:46:05because it's very long.
00:46:06They did really well.
00:46:07They stuck at it.
00:46:07And a little bit of stress around here.
00:46:09And then they just got it back on track
00:46:11and got it across the line.
00:46:12In terms of how the McEnnis have done another event,
00:46:14it was probably a bit of an ugly win.
00:46:16But a win's a win, and they're in a good position
00:46:18going through the next one.
00:46:22Now time for the scoreboard.
00:46:24After our first event in Heat 2,
00:46:26Andrews McEnnis have sailed to the top of the table
00:46:29with three points.
00:46:31Davies McDonough, who came in second place,
00:46:33have two points.
00:46:34And Michael Dyer's Walshes are in last place
00:46:37with just one point.
00:46:43Time to dive into Hang Tough again.
00:46:45And who will be diving into the freezing cold water
00:46:48of the River Boyne first?
00:46:50Our families will want to hang on for dear life
00:46:53and a place in the grand final.
00:46:58First up in Heat 2 for Hang Tough
00:47:00are Davies McDonough family from Mayo.
00:47:02They're in second place after Battle of the Boyne,
00:47:04so they'll need to really hang on
00:47:06to avoid the Eliminator.
00:47:08I don't know what they expect to hang tough.
00:47:11Mentally, they're strong,
00:47:12but normally the lighter you are,
00:47:13the better it is for you.
00:47:15If you're under pressure at any stage,
00:47:16talk to me, OK?
00:47:17I'll be working with Leah on the numbers.
00:47:19I'd love to say that I'd be hanging on the longest,
00:47:21but I really won't be.
00:47:22It's probably going to be between me and Dad,
00:47:23first one to go.
00:47:24We all know how much you want this,
00:47:26and I know that you're going to hang on for dear life.
00:47:28Is that the plan here?
00:47:29Oh, till the tide goes out.
00:47:30I love it.
00:47:31I'm confident enough
00:47:33that we can be there or thereabouts.
00:47:36This would be great if we could get first in this.
00:47:37It'd be out the door in the final.
00:47:39Happy days.
00:47:40We'll try.
00:47:40I'm open for Antin.
00:47:42Let's be optimistic
00:47:43and try and get that first place.
00:47:47That's it.
00:47:48From left to right for the McDonough's,
00:47:50it's Pat, Leah, Daniel and Matthew.
00:47:53The McDonough's a big boxing family,
00:47:55lots of upper body strength
00:47:56that should help them here.
00:47:58Raise the crane.
00:48:02So in our second heat,
00:48:03they are first to take on Hang Tough.
00:48:06You can hear the engine start in the background
00:48:08and you can see the clock ticking.
00:48:11They're underway.
00:48:15See themselves very much as underdogs
00:48:17in this competition.
00:48:21Davey Fitz certainly doesn't see them that way.
00:48:23Get your mind someplace else.
00:48:26And Davey...
00:48:28There was a little adjustment from Matthew there.
00:48:31But it can be unsettling
00:48:32until the crane actually stops
00:48:35and it's done so.
00:48:38Now Leah will count down.
00:48:39So the arms will be tired.
00:48:41There's some movement from Leah already.
00:48:42Oh my word, Leah's gone in after 34 seconds.
00:48:45So down to the lads.
00:48:48Matthew, Daniel and Pat.
00:48:53Pat is Daniel's granddad, of course.
00:48:57Daniel with the eyes wide open.
00:48:59Leah just been told to move away
00:49:00from the area where the lads
00:49:03will eventually drop down into the water.
00:49:09They've a remarkable record.
00:49:10They've never been in an eliminator
00:49:12and that is Pat.
00:49:13He's gone in after a minute.
00:49:16So this not going according to plan.
00:49:20And there's some movement now from Matthew.
00:49:22He hasn't looked happy from the start.
00:49:24Daniel just doing those pull-ups with the bar.
00:49:30So it's down to the two guys
00:49:31and more movement from Matthew
00:49:33and he's gone.
00:49:34One minute and 16 seconds.
00:49:35That is a surprise.
00:49:37All they've got left,
00:49:38the McDonough family from County Mayo
00:49:40is Daniel, 18-year-old Daniel.
00:49:43And now there's some movement from Daniel.
00:49:45He's gone as well.
00:49:46He tried to adjust the position on the bar.
00:49:48One minute and 24.
00:49:504.14 is the total.
00:49:51That is a surprise.
00:49:54That wasn't our best performance, you know.
00:49:56But you know what?
00:49:56That gives us a right kick.
00:49:58And I know the other two families are really strong
00:49:59but it'll give us a chance
00:50:00and let's see what the story is.
00:50:02Leah, I can see that you're very upset there.
00:50:04Let me in beside you there for a second.
00:50:06Raging to be honest.
00:50:06As soon as I got up there,
00:50:09I don't even know.
00:50:09I got into my own head
00:50:10and said I'm moving my grip.
00:50:11And I know the one thing Davey told us to do
00:50:13was not change your grip
00:50:14but it's so hard when you're up there
00:50:15and you can feel your hands slipping
00:50:16and you're like,
00:50:16oh, I'll have another grab at it
00:50:18and then you're gone.
00:50:19Pat, how are you feeling?
00:50:22Look at A.
00:50:23We knew it was going to be tough.
00:50:24We haven't had the pleasure
00:50:25of having an Eliminator.
00:50:26This will be our first one.
00:50:27We have no doubt about it.
00:50:28If we want to progress,
00:50:29these are challenges
00:50:30that are going to come up against us
00:50:31in the next two rounds ahead of us
00:50:33so we need to familiarise ourselves with it too.
00:50:35So I don't see it as being a negative
00:50:37to be quite honest.
00:50:41Up next on Hank Tuffin,
00:50:43desperate to turn their fortunes around
00:50:45after coming third in Battle of the Boyne,
00:50:47it's Michael Darragh and the Walsh family.
00:50:49This is all about just getting ahead in the game.
00:50:51Like, don't mind cameras,
00:50:53don't mind anything.
00:50:54It's you and this little bar right here.
00:50:56When they're up there,
00:50:57eyes closed,
00:50:58get comfortable with being uncomfortable
00:50:59and one of the biggest cliches
00:51:00ever used by a sports team
00:51:01but that's where they have to go to.
00:51:03Lads, how are you feeling about it?
00:51:04We're kind of excited.
00:51:06Okay.
00:51:07Like, it's not going to be fun.
00:51:08It's not going to be enjoyable.
00:51:09Kind of excited for it now.
00:51:10I won't be saying that to anyone else
00:51:11but I've always wanted to try it.
00:51:13You know, you've been watching
00:51:13on telly there for years.
00:51:14I'd say it's a lot harder than it looks
00:51:16but I might make it look easy.
00:51:19Second to take on Hank Tuff,
00:51:21the Walsh family from left to right.
00:51:23Mum, Amy, Michael, Alfie and Aidan.
00:51:26They were third in the Battle of the Boyne
00:51:28and they need a really good time here.
00:51:35A lot of tension.
00:51:36Alfie was dying to do this.
00:51:38Let's see how he gets on.
00:51:40So Amy just closes her eyes
00:51:42and up they go.
00:51:45Four minutes and 14
00:51:46is the time to beat.
00:51:48So Aidan is on the right of the screen.
00:51:54Lane is on.
00:51:54You and the bar, that's it.
00:51:57Michael Darragh,
00:51:58well, it's his first time to see this.
00:52:00The newbie coach that he is.
00:52:05Crane has stopped.
00:52:08And they have
00:52:10all done half a minute.
00:52:15Amy.
00:52:16And that's Aidan.
00:52:22So they're swaying a little bit.
00:52:23There's not a huge amount of wind out there.
00:52:25It's quite calm.
00:52:2645 seconds already.
00:52:27Flying in.
00:52:29And the time is flying.
00:52:33So they all look good, don't they?
00:52:36All very steady.
00:52:38And there's a little grimace now
00:52:39on Michael's face.
00:52:41He's gone.
00:52:42Let's go.
00:52:42He does not look happy at all.
00:52:45Aidan taking a position.
00:52:47He's happy.
00:52:48He's just staring.
00:52:49Well, he's not staring.
00:52:50He's got the eyes closed.
00:52:51There's some movement from Michael.
00:52:53But Amy goes
00:52:53and she's gone in
00:52:55in one minute and 11 seconds.
00:52:57I have to say,
00:52:58I was more concerned about Michael.
00:52:59And Michael now,
00:53:01oh, he's gone as well.
00:53:03One minute and 15.
00:53:05Alfie and Aidan
00:53:06are left up there
00:53:07for the Walsh family.
00:53:09They need
00:53:10a big time here.
00:53:13Now Aidan
00:53:13doing those chin-ups
00:53:15with the bar.
00:53:15That's incredible strength.
00:53:16Stick with it.
00:53:18Give me what you have here.
00:53:19Give me what you have here, Aidan.
00:53:20I've seen that before
00:53:20where people do that
00:53:22and it does
00:53:22seem to help.
00:53:24Another one from Aidan.
00:53:28And he's just adjusting the grip
00:53:30and that's never a good sign.
00:53:32And he's gone in.
00:53:33Aidan Walsh
00:53:34in one minute and 39.
00:53:36Alfie said he was dying
00:53:37to do this.
00:53:38But let's see how long
00:53:38he can last.
00:53:39He's starting to battle
00:53:40with it a little bit.
00:53:42There's been no adjustment
00:53:43with the grip.
00:53:44Michael Darrow working
00:53:47very closely with him
00:53:48and trying to encourage him
00:53:49but Alfie Walsh
00:53:50is gone.
00:53:51One minute and 53 seconds.
00:53:53You add it all together.
00:53:545.58.
00:53:55We'll see if that's good enough.
00:53:59If I told you
00:54:00I'd be the last one up there.
00:54:01The fact that
00:54:02I like peace and quiet
00:54:03and I was singing away
00:54:04a few songs in my head.
00:54:05Pink Pony Club
00:54:06by Chapel Rowan.
00:54:07Personal favourite of mine.
00:54:08Amy, you did incredibly well.
00:54:10You're proud of yourself.
00:54:11I was fine
00:54:12till I opened my eyes
00:54:13and then I saw
00:54:13how high up I was
00:54:14and I got some shaking.
00:54:15And then I was waiting
00:54:16then for the drop
00:54:18and you wait for that hit
00:54:19when you hit the water.
00:54:21But yeah, done and dusted.
00:54:22How do you feel after that?
00:54:23Yeah, look,
00:54:24it's one of these ones.
00:54:25We haven't seen the time
00:54:25to play what everyone else did.
00:54:26So like it felt good.
00:54:28Let's see what happens.
00:54:29We did well.
00:54:30Did we do well enough?
00:54:31I don't know.
00:54:32I don't know.
00:54:33I'd have my suspicions.
00:54:35Right, deep breath.
00:54:37You're all good Sharon,
00:54:38you're strong.
00:54:39Hold on there Sharon.
00:54:43Welcome back to
00:54:55Ireland's Fittest Family.
00:54:57Before the break
00:54:58we saw Andrews McHenness
00:54:59leave the others in their wake
00:55:01to claim victory
00:55:02in Battle of the Boyne.
00:55:04Then things got even wetter
00:55:05when Michael Daris washes
00:55:07and Davies McDonough
00:55:08tackles the legendary
00:55:10Hangtuff.
00:55:13Up next are the
00:55:14McKenna family from Monaghan.
00:55:16Can they hang on
00:55:16to their first place position
00:55:18and sail into the grand final?
00:55:20I think Hangtuff's
00:55:21going to be pretty suitable
00:55:22to them.
00:55:23There's like a level
00:55:24of competition
00:55:24within the family
00:55:25that's going to serve us
00:55:26pretty well.
00:55:27Especially with the brothers
00:55:28it's perfect
00:55:29because they want to
00:55:30outlast each other.
00:55:31I suppose me and Conor
00:55:32could be the strongest
00:55:32but that doesn't necessarily
00:55:33mean we'll stay up longer.
00:55:34Colleen's very light
00:55:35and Mum is as hard as nails too.
00:55:37How are you feeling about this?
00:55:39We're a bit nervous.
00:55:40We have like a milestone
00:55:42we're hoping to reach.
00:55:43Okay.
00:55:43Am I allowed?
00:55:44No?
00:55:45Am I privy to this information?
00:55:46No because we might not make it.
00:55:47We've practiced it a bit at home
00:55:49but we never expected
00:55:51to be doing that rowing
00:55:52so the arms are going
00:55:53to fail this one.
00:55:54Fairly tired.
00:55:54It's a tough workout
00:55:55so hopefully we'll get
00:55:56a bit of a banana
00:55:57into me here
00:55:58and go again.
00:56:00Last to go
00:56:01the McKenna family
00:56:02from Monaghan
00:56:03from left to right
00:56:04Colleen,
00:56:05Caelan,
00:56:05Cormac
00:56:06and Mum Sharon.
00:56:07They were first
00:56:07in Battle of the Boynton.
00:56:08Tommy, take your grip.
00:56:10They have this
00:56:11remarkable record
00:56:13in the competition
00:56:14this year.
00:56:15They've finished
00:56:15top in every event
00:56:16they've taken part in
00:56:17but they haven't
00:56:20done this before.
00:56:21They have been
00:56:22practicing at home
00:56:24but as we said earlier
00:56:27but as we said earlier
00:56:27you just can't
00:56:28replicate and recreate
00:56:30these kind of conditions.
00:56:32The freezing cold
00:56:33river point
00:56:33underneath you
00:56:34and that swaying
00:56:37as they move
00:56:37into position
00:56:38this is so different.
00:56:42Okay,
00:56:42the mechanics of it
00:56:44are the same.
00:56:45There's some movement
00:56:46already from Cormac
00:56:46just as he gets
00:56:47into position.
00:56:48They are swaying a little
00:56:49on the bar
00:56:49all four of them
00:56:51actually
00:56:51but that was just
00:56:52as the crane
00:56:53came to a stop
00:56:53so they've done
00:56:5430 seconds already.
00:56:55So the longest time
00:56:59was the Walsh's
00:57:00five minutes
00:57:01and 58 seconds.
00:57:04So Sharon
00:57:05with the eyes open.
00:57:06Caelan
00:57:06he's been
00:57:07looking around a bit.
00:57:10I think he's just
00:57:10checking on the rest
00:57:11of his family.
00:57:12It doesn't seem to be
00:57:12any issue
00:57:13for any of them really.
00:57:15This is
00:57:16a very strong start.
00:57:18Cormac has the legs
00:57:19crossed.
00:57:21Now Caelan
00:57:22with the eyes closed.
00:57:23Another move
00:57:25from Cormac McKenna.
00:57:29But he's steady
00:57:30down again.
00:57:31Andrew Trimble
00:57:32as always
00:57:33very calm
00:57:33on the bank.
00:57:37Now Cormac
00:57:38is just
00:57:39readjusting
00:57:40slightly.
00:57:42Normally it's not
00:57:43a good sign
00:57:44but he's steady
00:57:45down again.
00:57:49So Sharon
00:57:50looking around
00:57:51as well
00:57:51and now
00:57:52Cormac
00:57:53seems to be
00:57:54in quite a bit
00:57:54of difficulty.
00:57:55He's changed
00:57:55the grip now.
00:57:58Very risky
00:57:58to do that
00:57:59when you're
00:57:59hanging up there.
00:58:00Cormac McKenna
00:58:01and he's gone
00:58:02one minute
00:58:03and 39 seconds.
00:58:05It's still
00:58:05a good time
00:58:06and they've
00:58:07three still up there.
00:58:0890 seconds.
00:58:10So now
00:58:13Colleen
00:58:13Oh
00:58:13and she's gone
00:58:14one minute
00:58:15and 47
00:58:15just a few
00:58:18seconds
00:58:18after her
00:58:19brother Cormac
00:58:19it's down
00:58:20to Sharon
00:58:20and Caelan
00:58:21as they head
00:58:22towards two minutes.
00:58:24They both
00:58:26look strong
00:58:27they both
00:58:27look steady
00:58:28there's a grimace
00:58:29now as I say
00:58:29that on Sharon's
00:58:30face and she
00:58:31is in difficulty
00:58:32and Sharon drops
00:58:33in two minutes
00:58:33and two seconds
00:58:35it's still a very
00:58:35very good time
00:58:36and Caelan
00:58:37doesn't look like
00:58:38he's going anywhere
00:58:38deep in concentration
00:58:41oh and now
00:58:43there's some movement
00:58:44from him
00:58:45just right at the end
00:58:46he's been
00:58:46so steady
00:58:48and calm
00:58:48all the way through
00:58:49this hang tough event
00:58:51but he's
00:58:53calmed down again
00:58:54it's such
00:58:56an impressive
00:58:56show of strength
00:58:58from Caelan
00:58:59McKenna
00:59:00and he's gone
00:59:01in two minutes
00:59:02and 26 seconds
00:59:03a combined total
00:59:04of 7.54
00:59:05they've won
00:59:06both events
00:59:06it looks like
00:59:07they are straight
00:59:08through to the
00:59:08grand final
00:59:09I think they're
00:59:10disappointed
00:59:10they were hoping
00:59:11for 9 minutes
00:59:12I reckon they're
00:59:13probably in around
00:59:147 minutes 50
00:59:15but I thought
00:59:16they did well
00:59:16they're just used
00:59:17to smashing events
00:59:18like everything
00:59:19they've touched
00:59:19has turned to gold
00:59:20at this stage
00:59:20Harry Zealand
00:59:21well I'm a wee bit
00:59:23smug because I wasn't
00:59:24the first one down
00:59:25I was expecting
00:59:25the first one down
00:59:26but unfortunately
00:59:27it was we were
00:59:28Cormac
00:59:28my hands got a bit
00:59:29sweaty
00:59:29I tried to pull
00:59:30myself up a bit
00:59:30and re-grip
00:59:31but it just slipped
00:59:32it doesn't matter
00:59:33if we still get past it
00:59:34I'll still hear
00:59:35about the dinner table
00:59:36or something
00:59:36Caelan that was
00:59:37a super performance
00:59:39from you
00:59:40can you sit through
00:59:40your arms after that
00:59:41yeah but
00:59:41when you're practicing
00:59:42at home you're doing
00:59:43better
00:59:43that wasn't easy
00:59:44no
00:59:45the first minute and a half
00:59:46I was comfortable enough
00:59:47and then Cormac
00:59:48dropped
00:59:49I sort of felt like
00:59:49I had to stay up longer
00:59:50to try and bring
00:59:51the average up
00:59:51we're trying to avoid
00:59:52the illuminators
00:59:53but if we do have to be in it
00:59:54we want to win it
00:59:55we want to get to the final
00:59:56with all the events
00:59:59completed
01:00:00it's time for me
01:00:00to pass on the results
01:00:02to our nervous families
01:00:03hi families
01:00:05well done today
01:00:07you all put in
01:00:07a phenomenal performance
01:00:09but it is time for me
01:00:11to reveal
01:00:12who will be going
01:00:13straight through
01:00:14to our grand final
01:00:15and the family
01:00:17who will be going
01:00:19straight through
01:00:19and avoiding our eliminator

01:00:21Andrew and the McKennas
01:00:24congratulations

01:00:35for our last eliminator
01:00:37for that final place
01:00:38in our grand final
01:00:40best of luck
01:00:40all roads and rivers
01:00:49have led to this moment
01:00:50Davey's McDonas
01:00:52versus Michael Dara's Walshes
01:00:54in the last eliminator
01:00:56of our series
01:00:57the prize
01:00:58that remaining spot
01:01:00in our grand final
01:01:01bring it on
01:01:02you have to
01:01:06get over the ramps
01:01:07to get into the final
01:01:07so I think we've
01:01:08accepted it
01:01:09and yeah
01:01:10let's go
01:01:10we're one event
01:01:11away from the final
01:01:12I mean
01:01:13wow
01:01:13all I want is my family
01:01:19to give everything
01:01:20just give everything
01:01:21and that's it
01:01:22we're not happy
01:01:23with this morning
01:01:23we're not happy
01:01:24with the way of things
01:01:24genuinely
01:01:25Davey's not happy
01:01:26Davey wants in the final
01:01:27so I need to be
01:01:29the spoiler
01:01:30you've been here
01:01:31already today
01:01:31yeah
01:01:31are you feeling a bit
01:01:32nervous right now
01:01:33everything's on the line
01:01:34here for me
01:01:35and for Michael Dara
01:01:35like it's one of us
01:01:36going home
01:01:37like one of us
01:01:37and getting to the final
01:01:38this is my last chance
01:01:39but I embrace that
01:01:41and this is the thing
01:01:42it's both of your last
01:01:43chances
01:01:43like one of you
01:01:44are going to be leaving
01:01:44the competition today
01:01:45surely you'll just
01:01:46give me a pass
01:01:47and let me
01:01:47just be the gentleman
01:01:48bring your reference vibes
01:01:49for the good
01:01:50of people's eardrums
01:01:53around the country
01:01:53I'm going to try
01:01:54and beat them
01:01:54there's one place
01:01:56left in the grand final
01:01:57for the McDonough's
01:01:58in orange
01:01:58it's Pat
01:01:59Matthew
01:01:59Daniel
01:02:00and Leah
01:02:00and for the Walsh's
01:02:01in green
01:02:02it's Alfie
01:02:02Aidan
01:02:03Michael
01:02:03and Amy
01:02:04they're underway
01:02:10and it's the forklift
01:02:11truck right at the start
01:02:135.5 tonnes
01:02:15the Walsh's closest to us
01:02:17it's just all about
01:02:18getting it going
01:02:19but there's a lot more
01:02:20to it than that
01:02:21but the McDonough's
01:02:21have it moving now
01:02:22and moving pretty steadily
01:02:24Davey will know
01:02:25all about this
01:02:26from his experience
01:02:26with the Smiths family
01:02:27earlier on
01:02:28in this semi-final
01:02:30but the McDonough's
01:02:31have a bit of a lead
01:02:33at the moment
01:02:33and Davey wants them
01:02:34to drive on
01:02:35not literally
01:02:37the Walsh's
01:02:40have it moving now
01:02:41as well
01:02:42but the McDonough's
01:02:44heading and inching
01:02:46towards
01:02:47the finish line
01:02:48which
01:02:49when they started
01:02:50trying to move
01:02:51this forklift truck
01:02:52was 20 metres away
01:02:53it's quite a shock
01:02:54right at the start
01:02:55of the race
01:02:55isn't it
01:02:56Michael
01:02:57and Macaulay
01:02:58really happy with
01:02:59what his Walsh's
01:03:01are doing
01:03:01that's Mum Amy
01:03:02at the bottom
01:03:04of the rope
01:03:04the McDonough's
01:03:06very nearly there
01:03:08the wheels
01:03:08just once they
01:03:09cross that line
01:03:10they've done it
01:03:10and they are leading
01:03:11and away they go
01:03:12the Walsh's have
01:03:13that truck moving
01:03:14which is the main thing
01:03:16but the McDonough's
01:03:17can build a lead here
01:03:18they all have to be
01:03:21connected to that
01:03:22log
01:03:22it weighs 30 kilograms
01:03:23and they're going
01:03:24to be running
01:03:25for 200 metres
01:03:26down the course
01:03:27so with every second
01:03:30the Walsh's are losing
01:03:32ground on the McDonough's
01:03:33in this eliminator
01:03:34come on
01:03:36come on
01:03:37Paul O'Donovan
01:03:40running alongside
01:03:41the McDonough's
01:03:42and the Walsh's
01:03:43almost there
01:03:44once the front wheels
01:03:45touch that metal line
01:03:46they can go
01:03:47and they're gone
01:03:47so now they have
01:03:50ground to make up
01:03:51the McDonough's
01:03:52have got rid of
01:03:54the 30 kilogram log
01:03:56and now they're
01:03:56back down
01:03:57to take on
01:03:58these containers
01:03:59here come the Walsh's
01:04:00though
01:04:00they can make up
01:04:02that deficit
01:04:03over these
01:04:05containers
01:04:06because we've seen
01:04:07families have issues
01:04:09with these before
01:04:10Baby Fitz wants them
01:04:12to settle into
01:04:13that rhythm
01:04:14there will be
01:04:14a very clear plan
01:04:15so Amy Walsh
01:04:18just holding on
01:04:19to her son's top
01:04:20you can see that there
01:04:21so well
01:04:24they're actually
01:04:24going to run by
01:04:25the McDonough's
01:04:26that's probably a little
01:04:27bit disconcerting
01:04:28for them
01:04:28but there'll be
01:04:29no panic
01:04:30at this stage
01:04:31because they are
01:04:34now on this run
01:04:35to the first
01:04:36container
01:04:37the McDonough's
01:04:39are at the first
01:04:40double container
01:04:41pyramid
01:04:42so each one of them
01:04:442.6 metres
01:04:45high
01:04:46here come the
01:04:49Walsh's
01:04:50they really are not
01:04:52that far behind
01:04:53they have made up
01:04:54ground
01:04:54perhaps the McDonough's
01:04:55haven't been
01:04:56as flawless
01:04:56as they would like
01:04:58so that's pass
01:04:59on top of that container
01:05:01he's got some help
01:05:02up there as well
01:05:02they've kind of split up
01:05:04a little bit at the
01:05:05moment the McDonough family
01:05:05that's not an issue
01:05:06the Walsh's all together
01:05:08all helping
01:05:09so Davey fits
01:05:15the McDonough's are his
01:05:17last family
01:05:18same as Michael
01:05:19Darrell McCauley
01:05:19the Walsh's are his
01:05:20last family
01:05:21so one of these two
01:05:23will not be in the
01:05:24grand final
01:05:25so the McDonough's
01:05:29good steady pace
01:05:30that's Leah
01:05:31help to the top
01:05:31of that container
01:05:32down she goes
01:05:35here comes Pat McDonough
01:05:36come on
01:05:37Davey will be hoarse
01:05:39at the end of the day
01:05:40Michael Darrell
01:05:42just offering
01:05:44whatever advice
01:05:45he can
01:05:46to the Walsh family
01:05:47this is the second
01:05:49container stack
01:05:50double container stack
01:05:51for the McDonough's
01:05:52and Leah again
01:05:54dragged to the top
01:05:55I don't know if
01:05:56she'd be too mad
01:05:56about that
01:05:57so Alfie, Aiden, Michael
01:06:00and Amy Walsh
01:06:01doing all they can
01:06:02pull her up
01:06:03pull her up
01:06:04pull her up
01:06:04get him up
01:06:04McDonough's
01:06:05holding on to this lead
01:06:08oh
01:06:10the pass got
01:06:11stood on there
01:06:12Leah's up at the top
01:06:14you can see the gap
01:06:15between them
01:06:16so it's a healthy lead
01:06:18for the McDonough's
01:06:19but you just never know
01:06:20it's taken a huge effort
01:06:24to get all
01:06:26eight of our competitors
01:06:27here
01:06:27Davey wants Pat
01:06:29to get down
01:06:29off the top
01:06:30of that container
01:06:30there's no let up
01:06:31with Davey Fitz
01:06:32or with Michael Darrell
01:06:33McCauley
01:06:34this is just a single
01:06:35container
01:06:36for Amy
01:06:37and the rest
01:06:38of the Walsh family
01:06:39so the McDonough's
01:06:40are up at the wall
01:06:40get more climbing
01:06:44that's Matthew McDonough
01:06:45who's gone up
01:06:45to the top
01:06:46Leah now joins him
01:06:47just about
01:06:49great material
01:06:51and that shirt
01:06:51the lads have certainly
01:06:52pulled and dragged it
01:06:53all over the place
01:06:54today
01:06:55so the Walsh's have
01:06:56one final
01:06:58double container pyramid
01:07:00to take on
01:07:00the McDonough's
01:07:02in a great position
01:07:03here though
01:07:04so
01:07:06well
01:07:06a little bit of a mistake
01:07:08there
01:07:08that might open the door
01:07:09for the Walsh family
01:07:10Michael Darrell has a look
01:07:11around the corner
01:07:12to see how the McDonough's
01:07:13are doing
01:07:14it can go wrong
01:07:15on the wall
01:07:15we've seen that before
01:07:16but it's not going to go wrong
01:07:18now that's Daniel
01:07:19who's helped to the top
01:07:20very impressive
01:07:21strength
01:07:22and Daniel
01:07:23is up there
01:07:24and all four of the McDonough's
01:07:26are away from the wall
01:07:26it's just the ramp to go
01:07:28the Walsh's try and close
01:07:30I think that expression
01:07:30of Michael Darrell's face
01:07:31said an awful lot
01:07:33he knows
01:07:33will the McDonough's
01:07:35have a go at this
01:07:35first time
01:07:36here goes Matthew
01:07:37yeah he's got to the top
01:07:38he's very tall
01:07:39he just drags himself up
01:07:40and the Walsh family
01:07:41can see exactly
01:07:42what's going on
01:07:43Matthew McDonough
01:07:44is up there
01:07:45now Daniel
01:07:45has a go too
01:07:46what a day he's had
01:07:47the Walsh's
01:07:49try to go as fast
01:07:50as they can
01:07:50but time is running
01:07:51out for them
01:07:52now Leah
01:07:52is helped up there
01:07:53that's brilliant
01:07:54from Leah

01:07:56first time
01:07:56three out of three
01:07:57for the McDonough family
01:07:58and it's down to pass
01:08:00as the Walsh's
01:08:00battle on
01:08:01now Pat McDonough
01:08:02and he's dragged up
01:08:03to the top
01:08:04that's superb
01:08:04they made that look easy
01:08:06David over the moon
01:08:07the McDonough's
01:08:08are into the grand final
01:08:09the last place is theirs
