00:00my father grabbed me off my mother because I was in her arms the train pulled away I've
00:14never seen my mother again out of the blue he just said I just want to make sure mom
00:22told you the family secret every year thousands of people come to us looking for missing family
00:29she's my sister she's loved and then she needs to know that she's loved sometimes is to solve a
00:38mystery that's troubled them for decades I'm petrified I'm looking for her I've just got to
00:45try or to end the torment of what they don't know any siblings any answers any anything be great so
00:56imagine the moment hi Alan hi Davina when the burning questions can finally be answered
01:05reuniting families who've spent a lifetime apart
01:20it was after her mum had died that our first searcher learnt a devastating family secret
01:41that had been too painful for her mum to speak of during her lifetime
01:45it's very surreal knowing you have a sister when you're 56 years of age but you have no idea what
01:58she looks like whether she looks like my mum or she looks like my dad
02:01okay where do you want the paint watch how high I can go
02:1456 year old teaching assistant Mandy Irvin and her husband Malcolm recently retired to the coast
02:23we'd wanted to move by the sea for a long time and then Malcolm was made redundant it kind of just
02:30seemed like the ideal time to make the jump I won't give up a day job
02:35today Mandy is returning to Hertfordshire where she and her younger brother grew up it was a very quiet
02:49a rural place I have lots of good memories
02:57this is the house I grew up in with my mum and dad and they lived in it for 54 years
03:03as an adult Mandy stayed in Hertfordshire and after her mum died in 2018 she took care of her dad
03:12it was a Sunday morning I went into the kitchen to put the kettle on and just randomly out of the blue
03:18he just said I just want to make sure mum told you the family secret
03:22and I was like no and he said that they were like 17 and 18 and mum got pregnant they were very happy
03:33about it they didn't tell my mum's mum I think probably deep down my mum probably knew that my
03:40nan wouldn't approve I don't think she liked my dad very much she didn't think my dad was good enough for
03:45my mum she kept it from her mum for the whole nine months of her pregnancy so obviously once baby was
03:54born they had to tell her and that's when my nan took charge my nan was quite a cold fish you didn't
04:04get hugs from her you didn't get kisses from her and my dad said my nan made my mum give the baby up for
04:12adoption I think she hoped that by taking the baby out of the equation that they would split up and
04:19then my mum would find someone more suitable my dad said I think your nan took over and literally took
04:26my mum to get the baby registered and that was it the baby was taken away from my mum and she was
04:32never given any more information about her she was gone so I went home straight away onto ancestry and
04:44found her birth certificate within 20 minutes I was just so shocked I would never in a million years
04:54thought that they would have had a baby and they wouldn't have told us Mandy was born two years
05:02after her sister was adopted they got married when my dad was 19 and my mum was 20 by then my nan
05:08obviously accepted the fact that when my mum hit 21 she was going to marry my dad so whether she liked it
05:14or not before Mandy's father died in 2022 he gave Mandy his blessing to search for her sister Mandy's
05:28brother's also supportive although not ready to be filmed I'm making this photo album for my sister so
05:37that she can get a feel for my mum and dad to know who her parents were I found so only a couple of
05:44photos from 1965 which is when my sister was born so this one she's hiding her belly so I'm not sure
05:51if she's actually pregnant in this one it's the right year I hope that she was adopted into a nice
05:59family and I completely get that it might be too hard for her to have to find out that she's got a
06:06full siblings not half siblings you know proper full brother and sister that she hasn't been
06:12allowed to have a relationship grow up with but I would love to have a sister and I would love to
06:19have her in my life Mandy knew that her sister had been born in 1965 and was called Sandra Tina Fisi but
06:35that is all she knew her birth family had no idea who had adopted her one of our intermediaries went to
06:44the general register office to discover her new name they learned that she'd been called Jennifer by her
06:50new family brought up in Hertfordshire just 10 miles down the road from where Mandy and her family had
06:57lived and she still lives in the area Jennifer known as Jenny has asked me to come to the school she
07:11has worked in for over 20 years starting as a dinner lady she's now an office administrator I hope that
07:21Jenny will be pleased that her sister has been looking for her but there's a lot of information
07:24in this search that will be difficult to hear it's going to be a revelation to Jenny that she was the
07:31eldest of three four siblings and she was the only one adopted ahead of filming our intermediary has told her
07:39that both her birth parents have died homely it's great takes me back so you feel a bit nervous about this
07:49are you a little bit yeah what I'm going to find out it was just going round and round in my head
07:55I've got a sister that's been looking for me so it was a nice surprise but one I wasn't expecting and I
08:05think what was really bizarre as well was she's a TA teaching assistant yeah and I work in this so
08:13tell me about your adult life what's that been like um first part was pretty good but I lost my
08:20um husband when he was 35 oh sorry what happened he had a heart attack what was his name Barry dropped
08:29dead in front of me in the boys and you know yeah that was pretty hard the younger two don't remember
08:37their father they were too little but my eldest does he was seven and that just broke me that really
08:45really broke me it had been a bad year anyway because um in the March I'd lost my dad so that was
08:52I supported mum and then five months later roles were reversed she's helping me help bring up the
09:00children um just get through yeah sorry no don't worry absolutely absolutely my god I didn't know this
09:08this is and and was she incredible yeah was she my rock yeah she was my rock and then about seven
09:16years later um I got together with my second partner Paul the kids adored him you know they
09:24thought it was great fun but sadly um 18 months later he passed away he went on generally so I went
09:34through it all again um and you start thinking this isn't fair this is this is I haven't you know what
09:43I'd done wrong to do you know to deserve this sort of thing and I I yeah I went to pieces on that one
09:49as well um who wouldn't and uh again mum was there what about now um now I've got my partner partner
10:01Martin and I've been with him about 16 years now 16 years that's fantastic yeah and this is an amazing
10:09new chapter yeah it really is that's what I've got to look at it it really is I've got so many things
10:15to tell you fantastic things thank you yeah it'd be nice to have something nice in my life yeah oh
10:21definitely what do you know about what happened when you were adopted and when you were born
10:26um I didn't initially know a huge amount it was only when I got my birth records that I found out a bit
10:34more I thought my mum my birth mum was a single mum but it turns out that she was with my father
10:43when she had me that my mum's mum felt that they were too young and felt that she couldn't keep me
10:50so gave me up for adoption that was all I was ever told this big information I have to tell you
10:55which might be difficult to hear do you know that they got married
10:59no they went on to get married wow
11:06when two years later two years later gosh oh well that does come as a surprise so
11:19that means my sister is my full sibling oh wow oh that's a bit of a shock that is a bit of a shock
11:32and you you also have um a younger brother oh I do birth brother yeah who's 10 months
11:42younger than Mandy as well oh wow your sister Mandy yeah I've got a sister and a brother
11:52are you okay yeah yeah I mean I think I feel for my birth mum a bit she hasn't as far as I'm concerned
12:04done anything wrong in that respect because I had a good life I had a good life with my parents so
12:11she I feel that she did right by me have you always known you were adopted yes since about
12:16the age of four let me tell you a bit about Mandy she's just moved to Selsey in West Sussex to be near
12:22the sea she just loves the sea oh wow Malcolm is Mandy's partner do they have children Mandy has a
12:30daughter from previous previous relationship I'm excited now yeah really excited there's just been so
12:38many questions going round and round in my head and just sort of like you know does she don't like me oh wow oh gosh got the same nose and the same shape eyes
12:55she looks lovely this is my sister this is my little sister
13:03that sounds so nice I'd love to show you a photograph of your birth parents oh yes please
13:13oh wow you look so like your birth mother yeah I can see it
13:24oh god
13:27you've had a lot to deal with in life I'm so happy for you because this is so lovely yeah that is good something nice definitely I can't wait to meet
13:52our next searcher grew up as an only child feeling isolated and yearning for siblings
14:07at the age of 18 she discovered that her childhood could have been very different
14:13my mum never said I love you she couldn't show emotion she lived with a big secret
14:24mum kept me but gave my brother away
14:30Jane's search for her brother has become more desperate with the passing decades
14:37we've wasted all those years teenagers you know the twenties the thirties
14:42they're getting married I really need to find my brother
14:4956 year old Jane Dundas was 18 when her mum told her a secret that she had an older brother
15:08Jane has two daughters and two grandchildren three years ago her life changed when she suffered a heart attack
15:17and she's now waiting for a hip operation
15:21my family are very important now especially after the heart attack I really thought I wasn't going to make it
15:27hello baby they are my life
15:30my mum was very distant to me I think she couldn't show me love because she'd given my brother away
15:39I think it completely changed her as a person so I made sure I was always there for my children
15:46so I made sure I was always there for my children
15:52Jane grew up in Cardiff with her mother Marion and stepfather Stanley
15:58gosh this brings back old memories
16:05well
16:10that was my bedroom at the front
16:13I grew up an only child
16:18it wasn't until Jane turned 18 that her mother revealed her secret
16:26mum sat me down and told me
16:31do you have a brother?
16:33he's called Paul
16:35he's only 11 months older than me
16:38same dad
16:39but when mum fell pregnant
16:42he wanted nothing to do with mum at all
16:45mum was only 23
16:48she wasn't married
16:50and she could not tell nan and granddad
16:53because she knew of the shame it would bring
16:56my granddad was a Baptist slave preacher
16:59and this is what my mother was worried about
17:02so she went away to Weymouth
17:06into a mother and baby home
17:08she had Paul for six weeks and two days
17:12and then had to give him up
17:14she did love him
17:17she told me she didn't want to give him away
17:21but it's never spoken about again
17:23Jane's grandparents had no idea about her mother's first child
17:27but when she became pregnant again
17:29her best friend Sandra suggested that this time she should tell them
17:44can you remember going with mum to go and tell them about me?
17:50she was convinced that her parents wouldn't accept her having a baby
17:55because granddad was a lay preacher wasn't he?
17:57yeah
17:58he was quite
17:59they were fine
18:00and they just accepted it
18:01oh
18:02unbelievable
18:03yeah they were absolutely fine
18:05I remember them being very lovely
18:06very gentle
18:07because I think you know if I hadn't have been for you
18:09I think I would have gone exactly the same way
18:12adopted as well
18:13yeah
18:14my grandparents were lovely
18:18when I was born they accepted me
18:21but people just turned their backs on them
18:24didn't speak to them
18:26they were shunned in the street
18:30they never knew about Paul
18:32she kept it so secret
18:34and it was just so so sad
18:36that he's gone and been adopted
18:40when they would have accepted him with open arms
18:43she'd given him up
18:46she couldn't have him back
18:51Marion died in 2012
18:52without ever seeing her son again
18:56I would have loved it if she was still alive
18:59could have met him together
19:09I want to tell Paul he was wanted
19:11and he was left
19:12I don't know how long I've got left
19:16but no matter what
19:19I'm going to find my brother
19:21I have to
19:22I have to
19:32In adoption cases
19:33the crucial detail needed to trace someone
19:36is their change of name
19:39we discovered that Jane's brother Paul
19:41was now called Stephen Smith
19:43which is a very common name
19:45but it was Stephen's middle name
19:47coupled with his date of birth
19:49that helped us narrow down the search
19:54Our specialist intermediary
19:55found six people who could have been Jane's brother
19:58so we wrote to all of them
20:00and one of them confirmed
20:01that he had originally been born with the name Paul
20:04we'd found Jane's brother
20:07and he was still living in the county where he was born 57 years ago
20:12I'm meeting Stephen
20:21now known as Steve
20:23at his home
20:24he lives with his wife Michelle
20:26and two children
20:27Charlie and Daisy
20:28Steve's adoption happened
20:31because his birth mother
20:33kept his existence a secret
20:36she was afraid of her parents reaction to this
20:39unplanned pregnancy
20:41that secret
20:43changed the course of his life
20:45and now
20:46he has a chance
20:47if he wants it
20:48to meet his sister
20:54ahead of filming
20:55we've told him about his birth mother's death
20:57Steve
21:07Nicky
21:08hi
21:09nice to meet you
21:10you too
21:11thank you for having me today

21:15nervous
21:16yeah nervous
21:17but I'm excited as well
21:18I'm so sorry
21:19that
21:20er
21:21we had to bring you the news
21:22that your birth mother
21:23died in
21:24in 2012
21:25yeah
21:26it would have been
21:27it would have been nice to
21:28um
21:29have actually met her
21:30just to really say
21:31you know
21:32I'm okay
21:33what was your adoption like?
21:34yeah my adoption was fine
21:35it was okay
21:36it made me
21:37hide my emotions
21:38I think
21:39it's you know
21:40you always know you're a bit of an outsider
21:41and a bit different to the rest of the family
21:42so you know
21:43you
21:44don't really show that much emotion
21:46so all of a sudden you have this family thing opening up?
21:48yes
21:49yes
21:50yes
21:51which you know
21:52it's um
21:53a bit hard to process really
21:54did you know that you had a sister?
21:55no
21:56no
21:57that was
21:58that was the big shock
21:59what were you told
22:00about your birth family?
22:01I was told that
22:03er
22:04my mother got pregnant by a guy who had an affair
22:06he was already married with a couple of kids
22:08he didn't want anything to do with her
22:09well
22:10she couldn't keep you because she was terrified
22:13of the reaction of her parents when they find out about this
22:17right
22:18your grandfather was um
22:19he was Baptist lay preacher in Cardiff
22:22ah right
22:23and so
22:24they never knew about it
22:25oh they never knew at all?
22:26never knew at all
22:27oh okay
22:29and
22:30she had
22:32another
22:33baby
22:34by the same father
22:36what the same guy

22:48no she's a full sibling
22:49Jane
22:50oh right

23:10your
23:12grandparents
23:13were
23:14incredibly supportive
23:16oh okay
23:17and so
23:18for your birth mother
23:19Marion
23:20she lived with the fact
23:21that she thinks

23:24her parents

23:27you would have been with her
