00:14my mother again out of the blue he just said I just want to make sure mom told you the family
00:23secret every year thousands of people come to us looking for missing family she's my sister she's
00:34loved and she needs to know that she's loved sometimes it's to solve a mystery that's
00:39troubled them for decades I'm petrified of looking for her but I've just got to try or to end the
00:48torment of what they don't know any siblings any answers any anything be great so imagine the moment
00:57hi Alan hi Davina when the burning questions can finally be answered
01:05reuniting families who've spent a lifetime apart
01:21hello sis
01:29our first searcher was only a child when a shocking revelation upended everything he'd
01:46believed about his family it's taken him years to discover the truth but one question remains
01:52where is his sister this is Tina's birth certificate it's got a name here Tina Marie and then the sad
02:05part is at the end where it says adopted it's not her fault that she was adopted she did absolutely
02:13nothing wrong she's my sister she's loved and she needs to know that she's loved
02:18that used to be a shop used to go in there and spend our pocket money picking up mojos
02:36business consultant Scott Shearer lives with his wife Ivana and their two children
02:42today he's returning to the housing estate where he spent his childhood I grew up in a very full
02:52household my big sister Pauline had left home there was three sisters living there and two brothers
03:01myself and my mum Sylvia and dad so it was quite a busy house there's me and my two brothers Carl and
03:10Linden me all the shot strip for my sins I knew I didn't look like any member of my family I was
03:18mixed and they were white so I asked a lot of questions and it's always you're with your family we
03:25are your family but something was off I knew something was off and I wasn't comfortable it
03:31wasn't until Scott was 12 that he discovered the truth I was on the stairs and my sister Kerry came
03:39down the stairs and we had an altercation and I said I'm gonna tell my dad and she said he's not your dad
03:48Ted and Sylvia revealed that Scott had been adopted and that his birth mother was their eldest daughter Pauline
03:58it changed everything in my life because you find out that your parents and your grandparents your
04:07sister is your mum which is mind-blower Scott eventually learned that when Pauline was a
04:15teenager she'd had a brief affair with a married man of Nigerian origin and felt unable to raise Scott on her
04:23own Scott's aunt Kerry who Scott was raised to believe was his sister has more information about
04:33Pauline's past I'm good long time no see do you remember me finding out I was a doctor yes
04:44unfortunately I told you in not such a nice way I think did you know I was always Pauline's son or I
04:51did you find out I was always told that your mama died so I had no reason to disbelieve that and I
04:58was staying at Pauline's I know we were just laying in the bed you know chatting away you were the topic of
05:05conversation I can't think why misbehaving and she said that your mum wasn't dead and that I was lying
05:12next to her so I put two and two together obviously and realized that she was your mum wow
05:17here's an old picture yeah that's already young yeah she was 16 she only looks like a child
05:27Scott discovered that three years before he was born his mother Pauline had been married aged just 16
05:36he then found out an even bigger secret my mum Pauline had had three children before me she had her
05:47her first child who was Tina at 16 then at 18 she had the twins a boy and a girl and then a year later
05:56she had me Pauline's marriage broke down and by the time she was pregnant with Scott she was a single
06:05mother caring for baby twins and her two-year-old daughter Tina she talks about having the children when
06:12they were little and it was a family unit she had no intention of getting rid of any of them she
06:19should struggle through she had nowhere to stay so I think that's why all three were put into care and
06:26that's probably why I was kept because one child is easier to take care of them three she was young
06:32Pauline wholeheartedly supports Scott's search but she's unwell with cancer and feels unable to appear
06:43on camera Scott traced the twins in 1994 and they remain in contact but Tina had been adopted separately
06:52and the search for her has proved much more difficult I don't know even what she's called anymore so it's hard
06:59to find someone if you don't know who you're looking for she's a total mystery an enigma this is the
07:08only tangible evidence I have it makes her real even though I've never met her I've always felt that
07:19connection she's the firstborn of our clan she's the big sister she's the elder she's of course she's
07:29special I just want her to know that she's always been in our minds and our thoughts and that she's loved
07:37and she's wanted the only information Scott had about Tina is from her birth certificate so our
07:53specialist intermediary access to adoption paperwork and discovered that Tina had been adopted in the
07:58Aldershot area and her adoptive family's name was Twiddy when our searches for that name drew a blank we
08:07consulted marriage records to find out if her name had changed again we identified two possible matches
08:13both with the same date of birth so we wrote to both of them and one replied to confirm she had indeed
08:20once been Tina Twiddy we'd found Scott's sister living just 40 miles away from Aldershot in Southampton
08:29I'm meeting Tina near her home
08:36she's a retired charity worker with two children and nine grandchildren
08:44Scott grew up in a family full of secrets but what does Tina know about this complicated past and how
08:55will she feel about the fact that her brother stayed with their birth family while she went into care
09:02following spinal surgery two years ago Tina had to learn to speak and walk again she's still in recovery
09:11Tina hi hi I'm Nikki hello hello nice to meet you thank you we've got a lot to talk about
09:22I'm ready how are you how are you feeling that says it all did you know that you had this brother
09:35no I knew I can remember um some twins that were younger than me oh I remember them tiny and gorgeous so
09:45what kind of surprise was this oh this was massive gives you all warmth knowing that somebody's
09:51that you didn't know about thinking about you yeah that's a lovely way of putting it tell me about
09:55your adoption my adopted family are wonderful um my dad is just he's my absolute hero and he
10:04thinks okay about all this yes he's right behind me well but your brother's Scott yes and he he grew
10:11up in Aldershot oh my gosh I was born in Aldershot so he stayed he didn't go far no because he was
10:20adopted within the family oh your birth mother Pauline yeah she was a teenager single mum three young
10:29children she was in a desperate situation and she got involved with somebody else she had another baby
10:37and that's too many babies something to give you and the twins had been put into the care system fostered
10:50and adopted but your grandmother Sylvia yeah she agreed that Scott the youngest stayed stayed within the
10:59family how do you feel about that um I mean I don't you know you you you come through that stuff you
11:11know about rejection so this doesn't make it anymore growing up Scott didn't know that Sylvia was his
11:20grandmother he thought that Sylvia was his mum oh poor thing is he okay now yes he is he's married to
11:29Ivana and he got two kids something else I need to tell you is that your mother Pauline is still alive oh
11:38oh okay and Scott's message from Pauline is that you were so wanted by Pauline
11:50thank you gosh if it turns out it does make a difference he's really really keen to convey that
12:01from her that she wanted to keep you and she loved you oh gosh that's the one thing I always said I
12:10didn't want out of this that's I'm gonna have to process that that's fine you process it you process it
12:18you know that does suggest that somebody really cares quite deeply for them to want to impart that
12:24sort of life-changing information I bet you would like to see a photograph oh yes please oh oh so smiley
12:35look at those eyes kind eyes oh it's my brother oh so he's also written a letter thank you very much
12:49if you're reading this it means my long search has finally come to an end the possibility of seeing
12:58you and hugging you has sustained me throughout the years of searching the biggest thing I want you
13:05to know is you have always been loved and we're not giving up voluntarily love always your brother Scott
13:13oh that's lovely lovely lovely words it does mean more than I thought it would
13:23I thought I had quite a level head on about it all but this does mean more than I thought it would
13:30do you want a hand thank you darling oh my god how are you happy now that's your uncle you
13:44actually do look really alike though it's mental oh are you excited to meet him I'm bouncing off the
13:50walls I literally can't wait counting down the days I already am yeah I already am
13:56but before we tell Scott the good news we turn to another search for a sister many families have
14:06secrets that remain hidden for decades for our next searcher once that secret was out she had to
14:13act even if it meant defying her mum I can't just leave it no news
14:26there's someone out there just not fresh and blood I'm petrified of looking for her being like you know rejected but I've just got to try
14:5664 year old Jackie lives with her partner Steve and their two dogs Willow and Maggs
15:02seven children never wanted any my dogs mean a lot to me they're both fun to be with fuller life fuller fur
15:15always they're always rely on a dog
15:18jackie moved to sussex eight years ago i used to run a snack wagon in south london burgers
15:30and bacon and sausages and it was hard work but it was fun as well i'm retired now i'm a lady of
15:40leisure well trim it down jackie is haunted by something that happened when she was 20.
15:50her parents are divorced and her mum said she had something to tell her
15:55she told us about a baby that was born there was no detail so there was no year
16:02whether it was a boring girl and we were told never to look for her
16:12i sat there stunned
16:20jackie's returning to where she her two brothers and her parents lived when her sibling was placed
16:26for adoption it's weird coming back very weird it's the first flat up there the very end one
16:37and this is where i believe my mum went to hospital and had the baby we moved house very suddenly i
16:45went to school in the morning and when i come home i went to a different home it was a different flat
16:52i think they moved in the hurry so the neighbors wouldn't gossip about the pregnancy
16:59jackie's parents have now both died but she's often wondered what is the real story behind her
17:06siblings adoption
17:11mum said that she had to give the baby up because they couldn't afford it
17:15but there's three bedrooms there and i could have shared so it doesn't make sense
17:22it doesn't make sense
17:24when i questioned my dad about the baby he said to me well i don't know if the baby was mine
17:34he said when mum was in hospital he was never allowed up to see the baby so he never saw the baby at all
17:43the father's not allowed to see a baby yeah it's just all of it's just weird
17:52it's just all of it's just all of it's just all of it's just all of it's just all of it
17:5964-year-old jackie has spent years searching for her younger sibling placed for adoption as a newborn
18:06when the internet come along you was able to search better and i found a birth in a local hospital
18:15in 1966 and i ordered the birth certificate
18:20the parents named on the birth certificate were jackie's mum and dad
18:26she was born on the 23rd of march 1966. a girl no name has got a line adopted
18:37it's just sad
18:40and she just wasn't wanted
18:52which is not true because i do
18:54it's the most bizarre thing i've never met her i just i don't know it's just love there for her
19:14every day i wake up thinking oh she's awake what's she doing every day she's on my mind
19:24it feels like someone's got a knife and they turn it around and to get rid of the pain to get sorry
19:31to stop the pain i've just got to find her get the knife out if that makes sense
19:40when jackie first came to us all she had was a sister's date of birth
19:52so the first thing we needed to identify was her new name our social worker contacted the general
19:59register office and found out that she'd been placed for adoption with a family in north london
20:05and given the new name christine after that we couldn't find any sign of her until we identified
20:13a marriage certificate in her new name and with that information we traced her
20:19i don't know how much christine knows about the circumstances around her adoption
20:32but she may not expect to hear her birth family including three siblings remain together
20:40but i'm really hoping that she'll welcome the fact that her older sister jackie loves her
20:46and has been searching for her for over 40 years
20:58hi hi how are you christine nice to meet you nice to meet you nice to meet you
21:02you'd like to come in i'd love to thank you very much come this way that's very kind of you thank you
21:08oh right well listen thanks very much for seeing me it's lovely to meet you yes likewise
21:11and uh wow um so what kind of a shock was this when um i had heard the news i actually had a sister
21:21it was just like an out-of-body experience it was just like i was up there and my body was like down
21:27there still and it's all thinking no seriously i mean we even when i when my daughter come in from
21:32from college we sort of sat down we said oh by the way guess what you've got another auntie
21:37and her reaction was like what did they ever think that you would find anyone or anyone from your
21:42birth family would find you your kids well they didn't even know i was adopted to be honest with
21:46you wait they didn't know they didn't my husband did my husband knew when eight years and years and
21:51years ago but my children didn't know why didn't you tell your kids it's quite a vital part of who you
21:56are isn't it well it is but then again you sometimes think it's just kind of one of those things
22:01you know just didn't want to disrupt them but there's a lot sinking in with me now i know tell
22:07me about it did you ever think about doing it yourself doing the searching there has been times
22:14when i have wanted to look but then thinking well not really what they reject me or whatever like you
22:23know i don't know what happened why did not get rid of me but why did they just push me to one side
22:30and keep the elder one three older ones hey because you've got two brothers as well
22:36really three elder siblings you've got two older brothers and a sister right three elder siblings
22:43bloody hell mind your language sorry pardon me
22:47that's a bit of a shocker as well i've got so much to tell you that's just one thing jackie has
23:07been looking for you for 40 years wow jackie's parents divorced when she was 20 and the year after
23:17they divorced your your birth mother told them that she had put a child up for adoption all right when
23:26jackie was six jackie's father was not even allowed to go to the hospital to see you wow and he thinks
23:38it may be because your birth mother had had an affair could have been yeah
23:47could have been but i'm just telling you oh yeah oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah and we can we can
23:53speculate till yeah so the cows come out really makes you think it does it does jackie is
24:02really emotional about this really and feels that she has to find you oh and she loves you oh that's good
24:11as long as she's known about you she's thought about you yeah and she's wanted to find you
24:21you finally traced me so tell me about your life now your family your hobbies well football's main
24:28hobby really i go to watford season ticket holder there they're going for 40 years oh right okay yeah

24:46she's another ginger like me because my daughter's blonde oh wow good lord she's blonde god there
24:58oh yeah all right okay that's interesting i've got the blonde eye lights in me yeah i know that

29:04and a half years ago she had an operation and she ended up in intensive care they put her into a coma
29:12she came back and she had all her memories she had all her personality still
29:19but she had to learn to speak all over again and walk in the last two years
29:25which she has done wow that's amazing
29:28she was quite not for six when she was told by nikki that your birth mother perhaps there was a
29:36chance of maybe meeting her because it was the one thing that she decided she never wanted to do
29:41to search for her birth mother so it's slightly trying to reframe everything she's believed to be
29:46true yeah i understand that what would your dream be going forward to build a relationship to

35:12Well, I'm sorry I made it difficult.
35:14You didn't have...
35:16I'll make everything difficult.
