00:00I am so excited. Thanks for letting me join in on your rehearsal today.
00:05First and foremost, how's it going? You've got two dances to prepare for.
00:11I know, it's going well. I always say this, but I think Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the hardest days of the week
00:19because you're just getting introduced to these new dances and it like takes a second to click.
00:23Okay, so having two to learn in the same amount of time is really crazy, but it's going well.
00:31I learned like a really rough version.
00:34Well is a very relative term.
00:37Okay.
00:37It's going well.
00:40Keeps it open.
00:41Yeah, we learned, he kind of taught me like the first dance really roughly like walk through yesterday.
00:48So now it'll be about like actually getting it into my brain and my body.
00:51But hammering it down. Do you have like, have you kind of come up with a process that you go through now
00:59that you're a few weeks in to really make sure you kind of get the moves into your body?
01:03Like, is there a technique that you use by any chance?
01:08I think we always, well, we have a certain routine that we do.
01:11Okay.
01:11Like since I started the show, basically with Val, we have our little warm up.
01:17Okay. We just have a warm up, a ritual.
01:19A ritual. We can't talk about that. Okay.
01:23And then.
01:23I want to share my secrets.
01:25So I'm kidding. I'm not going to tell you what our routine is.
01:28But for me, it's really.
01:30We usually come in cold.
01:31We, our strategy is to get into a huge fight and to leave early.
01:36So any other team that wants to know the synthesis.
01:40That's it.
01:41Don't practice.
01:43Yeah.
01:43Come in late.
01:45Don't practice.
01:47Just sit on the ground and look at each other.
01:49Meditate.
01:50Have a fight.
01:51Great.
01:52Meditate your choreography into your body.
01:54Meditate the choreography into your body.
01:56It just seeps through the muscles.
01:58Back.
02:00Oh my gosh.
02:00Well, you guys kind of came, you know, you rose to the top last week.
02:05Straight eights.
02:07Tell me just a little bit about your reaction to that amazing score.
02:10And then how you feel, Olivia, in particular, heading into this week.
02:15I mean, do you feel extra pressure on your shoulders?
02:17I think a little bit, but it's also just, like, pressure for myself, too, of just wanting
02:24to, like, get better every week.
02:26And obviously, the scores were awesome.
02:30I was super excited.
02:32And I felt really, like, grateful and happy when I saw the eights because we worked really
02:37hard on that dance.
02:38So it was, like, really rewarding to have, like, the recognition, I feel like.
02:42But it's a new week, and I think basically after those scores are out and Monday night
02:48comes to a close, you kind of just got to move forward and, like, focus on the new dance.
02:53Definitely.
02:54Our goal is for every, you know, I say all the time, it's like, you're only as good as
03:00your last performance.
03:01So right now, it's great.
03:04But we have to earn the next one.
03:06And I want next week to be just as fun and just as celebratory.
03:13Now, these two dances, villains and heroes.
03:18So you're kind of switching from one night to another.
03:23What are you tapping into for the heroes dance?
03:31Well, I'm tapping into Lion King since that's our hero.
03:35Okay.
03:36And we're doing the samba, too.
03:38Are you allowed to say that?
03:40I'm doing it.
03:41I'm doing it.
03:42Anyway, we're Lion King.
03:46And, yeah, I like the song.
03:48You know, the song drives the narrative a lot.
03:51And I'm excited for our costumes.
03:53I'm excited for this choreography because it's, you know, I think what was impressive
03:57about Olivia's performance last Monday is because it was actually, you know,
04:00it was movement that the judges have not seen her do before to that degree.
04:05And this week is going to be the same thing.
04:07This is a dance that's really going to challenge her.
04:09And for villains, what are you guys, you don't have to tell me if you don't want to, the person
04:25that you're channeling.
04:26But even just, like, the emotion, like, dancing itself is so, obviously, emotionally, you have to kind of tap into, like, a mantra or, like, a mindset.
04:37What are you kind of grabbing onto?
04:38For villains?
04:42I feel like, for me, what I'm really excited about for this next week, even though it's going to be more challenging
04:47because there are two dances in such a short amount of time, but I'm excited because, like, the last two weeks,
04:53we've had, like, more structure in the dance.
04:57Is that the right way of saying it?
04:58Like, yes.
05:00Right?
05:01And these ones get to be, like, a little bit more free, which we haven't really done.
05:04So that's something I'm really looking forward to.
05:07But in terms of, like, a mindset.
05:09She said, I get to shine on these.
05:11I'll stand next to you the whole time.
05:14No, because it helps when I'm in frame with them because I get less nervous.
05:18So it'll be a challenge because I'll be a little bit independent through these dances.
05:23She don't need no man.
05:24She don't need no man.
05:25You're a sass.
05:27I like it.
05:29And recovery-wise, from Monday night to Tuesday, Val, what can you kind of speak to
05:36and what's your advice for Olivia for, you know, making it through, like,
05:40these kind of two days in a row of being on and performing?
05:45Yeah, I haven't actually thought about that yet.
05:48It's going to be different.
05:49The thing is, the show has been a Monday, Tuesday show for, like, 10 years
05:54before it became once a week.
05:57And so.
05:58They used to always do two dances?
06:00So not two dances, but Mondays was the show.
06:03Tuesday was the result show.
06:05And on the result show, you see the pros dance together.
06:07You get to see a lot of different performances.
06:10Anyway, the point is that Tuesday feels great.
06:12Even when you're competing.
06:13In the finale, we did Monday and then Tuesday, another one.
06:17I love Tuesdays.
06:19They're more fun and less pressure.
06:21I feel like.
06:23And so I think she'll feel the same.
06:26I'm excited for Monday.
06:27But then Tuesday, hopefully, this is going to be, you know,
06:31kind of a cherry on top of a great week.
06:34Yeah.
06:35And it seems like you guys just have such a great dynamic.
06:37I love that, what you said about just what a great student Olivia is.
06:42I was reading, you know, an interview that I think we did with you the other day.
06:45And, or post the performance.
06:48And you just were so complimentary on what an incredible student Olivia is.
06:52And how much fun you guys have working together.
06:55What, what do you think just kind of makes you guys work?
06:58Like, was there something from day one that just you had a mutual understanding?
07:04Just a great teacher.
07:06It was fine with that, obviously.
07:08We, I think it was when I said Kobe.
07:16Kobe, yeah.
07:16The rest is history.
07:17I spit out my gum and I threw it in the trash can.
07:20And I was, like, standing across.
07:21It was, like, one of the first times we met.
07:23And I just said, Kobe.
07:24And I shot my shot.
07:25We understood what it meant.
07:27The rest is history.
07:28And now we get along great.
07:29That's how I knew.
07:30She was familiar.
07:31We have a very similar sense of humor.
07:35And it kind of seems like you have a good, oh, gosh, sorry.
07:43I feel like I'm on a delay.
07:44Go ahead.
07:45Go ahead, Val.
07:47I hate zooming.
07:48No, no, no.
07:49Go ahead.
07:50No, I was going to say, it seems like you guys have, like, a good, like, kind of like
07:53a brother-sister relationship.
07:54It just seems like you're, Val, like, super protective.
07:58And just, I love that that comes off.
08:00It really does.
08:01It's so fun.
08:03Yo, I am passionate about seeing people be great, especially when they're good people.
08:10So, that's it.
08:10You know, dance is my beautiful.
08:12The show is my opportunity.
08:14And I just, I'm grateful.
08:19I'm blessed.
08:20I'm really proud to be in a position where I get to help a young woman become a great woman.
08:26And if it's through dance, cool.
08:29You know, and if I'm a little part of that, that's my win.
08:32So, I'm very, I'm excited for this season.
08:36Yeah.
08:36Thanks.
08:37Yeah.
08:38And Olivia, obviously, being vulnerable, opening up, really tapping into your emotions is,
08:45like, a big part of this show.
08:46How has that been for you?
08:48And how has it, you know, are you excited for the audience to even continue to see more
08:54of you and how you grow?
08:56Cold-blooded.
08:57Cold-blooded.
08:58Emotionless.
08:59She's an assassin.
09:01I feel like, honestly, I haven't gotten that emotional yet.
09:04Correct.
09:05I see it.
09:05I see it.
09:06Her cheeks get red.
09:07Yeah.
09:07And her eyes start to sweat.
09:09And I'm like, all right.
09:10I'm going to chill out.
09:14Sometimes I'll, like, borderline cry.
09:17But it hasn't officially happened yet.
09:18So, I'm just seeing how long I can go.
09:20Yeah.
09:21Without crying in this way.
09:22Because I set a record for myself.
09:25You've cried on the inside.
09:27Yeah.
09:27I feel like it.
09:28It just hasn't externally come out yet.
09:30But, uh.
09:31I've cried a couple of times as well.
09:33Have you?
09:35On the inside?
09:36Yeah.
09:36I've seen you do the push-ups, like, in, like, the first three days.
09:39But you just can't wait for whatever one.
09:44Yeah.
09:44No.
09:45I feel like I definitely do want to show a deeper side of myself.
09:49And I think that's, like, a huge thing of why I really wanted to do this show.
09:52Besides just that I love to dance.
09:54And besides that aspect of just learning something new, it was to, you know, show a different audience.
10:00A more personal side, I would say.
10:03But as I said in the last package, too, like, it takes a lot of time for me to open up to people.
10:09And so a bunch of, like, strangers that I don't know watching, it's even, like, more pressure in my head to be a certain way.
10:16So I'm just trying to, like, be myself and help people like that.
10:20And also you've got to earn that conversation.
10:23You don't open the conversation where, like, hey, I'm Olivia and here are all my feelings.
10:28You know?
10:28It's like, I think, you know, this last week and the praise that Len gave her in the ballroom, you know, he's kind of like the gatekeeper dancing with the stars.
10:40And so, you know, I think we've earned our stay here.
10:44And now we can open up and share our vulnerabilities.
10:48I guess before that, I think it's almost out of context to do so.
10:53We're just happy to be here.
10:54Definitely.
10:57And I'm interested in your thoughts about Cody and Cheryl competing from home and separately.
11:05Obviously, that was a super hot topic this week.
11:07What do you guys think about that?
11:12Yeah, I mean, we kind of said this, like, after some of the interviews, after the show.
11:18But I, for me personally, I give huge props to Cody and to Cheryl, but especially, like, not being a dancer and having to learn something over the phone.
11:28It's already hard enough in person when you have somebody physically walking you through it.
11:32So it's pretty awesome that he did it through Zoom.
11:35And obviously, it's just really weird times.
11:38And everybody's just doing the best they can when stuff like that happens.
11:42But I think they'll hopefully be back this week if, like, the days, quarantine days add up.
11:48Yeah, I don't know.
11:50I don't know the details on that end.
11:54But, yeah, it's...
11:54I made that up.
11:55I was doing my own math.
11:56Yeah, I was doing my math too, though.
11:58But I guess we'll see.
12:03Yeah.
12:03Yeah, no, it's interesting.
12:04I think it's appropriate, too.
12:07This is what life is like for the last year and a half.
12:11So why not put that contestant on the show?
12:15But I don't want to be that guy.
12:18Like, I do not want to teach her over Zoom.
12:20We can barely have this conversation over Zoom.
12:23So difficult.
12:24I feel so far away.
12:26It's like that Tom Brady commercial where they have this conversation.
12:30All he hears is come to Tampa, Super Bowl.
12:33Yeah.
12:33What?
12:35I have no idea what you're talking about.
12:37No?
12:38Do you?
12:39Yes.
12:39Except my new favorite Tom Brady commercial is his Subway commercial where he's, like, smelling the bread.
12:44And they're like, you don't even eat bread.
12:47And it's...
12:48That's my new favorite.
12:49I don't know any of these commercials.
12:51Have you seen them?
12:53No.
12:53Because you're on TV.
12:55You're on TV when they play.
12:57So you don't get to watch them.
13:00They lie.
13:01Like, five, six, seven, eight.
13:03I'm too busy, like, mentally preparing behind stage.
13:07Yeah.
13:08How do you mentally prepare?
13:10What's your...
13:11You don't have to give me exact, Val.
13:14But what's your pre, you know, performance kind of rituals that you guys do?
13:21I think that...
13:23I think we're both believers in, like, universe, higher power sort of vibes.
13:28So I think we always try and, like, raise a toast up there, you know, and just, like, appreciate our health and that we get to be doing this.
13:36So I would say it starts off with you giving a little prayer.
13:41I don't know what...
13:43Oh, my God.
13:43I'm such a...
13:45I love it.
13:46So dramatic.
13:47It's not dramatic.
13:48It helps me because then I'm like, okay, this is hopefully going to result in some good karma.
13:54I mean, I do what some will refer to a Val speech quite often.
14:01It's like a gladiator when he's like, what you do now will echo an eternity.
14:08It's not that dramatic.
14:09It's like eating broccoli three hours away from the premiere.
14:14No, I just...
14:15Honestly, when there's a really stressful environment and you are so obsessed and insecure about yourself and your loathing and your own,
14:24like, challenge, like, it's nice to create a space of gratitude because then you should respect it and you're like, wow, this is great.
14:33Let me go and enjoy it.
14:34I'm overthinking it.
14:37And now, Val, when it comes to the choreography, I mean, you've been doing that.
14:41I mean, yeah, I get the higher power thing, though.
14:43I'm, like, very much on this side of it.
14:45I'm, like, moving on because I'm, like, I know you're praying and you're messing, like, don't, you know.
14:52But, so, when it comes to the choreography, you've been doing this for so long.
14:58How do you just keep things fresh and new and kind of, like, bring, like, these new steps and dances to every season?
15:07Music dictates a lot of that.
15:13You know, the song, it's got to, again, dance and music just go hand in hand.
15:20So artists that continue to put out awesome music, they continue to inspire choreographer.
15:27Storytelling, obviously, the person that you're working with.
15:30And I'll be honest, like, I'm not, I don't think I'm a great choreographer.
15:36I think I'm a great performer and a great dancer and a great teacher.
15:39I already told you that.
15:41I don't think I'm a great choreographer.
15:43I just have so much experience knowing which moves I know will look the best on her.
15:50And that kind of custom-tailored movement that I know will feel good for her, will be fun for her.
15:56That I'm even capable of doing.
15:57And I know that she will be capable of doing, you know.
16:01That's the hard thing.
16:02It's like, she's not supposed to get it on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
16:05That's terrifying, you know.
16:08But she gets it on Friday.
16:10That's why it's so exhilarating when Monday you perform it and you do it.
16:14And you do it well because there's a lot of risk-taking throughout.
16:18So, and also, she inspires it.
16:22She does silly things.
16:23And I'm like, that looked great.
16:25I want to put that in the mood.
16:27Yeah.
16:28Are you inspired by your TikToks?
16:30I mean, they are always on my For You page.
16:33Obviously.
16:34Are they?
16:36Yes.
16:37Yes.
16:39On the FYP.
16:41Constantly.
16:41Yeah, honestly.
16:43The TikToks, I don't even think we intended to do so many of them.
16:48And now we're just addicted and we can't stop making TikToks.
16:51AKA I forced Val to make TikToks.
16:53It's a team effort.
16:58You know, social media.
17:00First of all, TikToks are kind of like a stress release, right?
17:03Because you can't be so, so hard on what you're doing in the room.
17:07Number two, there's so interconnected social media and what we're putting out on Monday night.
17:13You know, we wanted to engage with our fans beyond the sliver of three minutes that we get on live television.
17:19Like, there's more to us and we want to know all of that.
17:24And so.
17:25But they're TikTok ads.
17:27It's not just about TikTok.
17:28It's about, again, it's about the joy that's in the room.
17:32Yeah.
17:32That's really important to communicate.
17:34Yeah.
17:34Well, and then you can find some new choreo to put in.
17:39Yeah.
17:40Via TikTok.
17:41We're doing Shake It Like a Pitbull in our samba.
17:45We're going to shake it like the Lion King.
17:47Shake it.
17:48Shake it like the Lion King.
17:50I like it.
17:51And, Alyssa, are there any moves or lifts or things that you're kind of nervous about or, you know, anticipating but, like, kind of putting off a little bit?
18:08Can I say that?
18:09Yeah, sure.
18:09Yeah, we have something called a Death Drop.
18:14And so, as you can tell by the title, it's a little bit intense.
18:20That's great.
18:21That's what you know.
18:22Yeah, it's actually really fun.
18:23I feel like I'm still here.
18:24So that's good.
18:26That's, yeah.
18:27Just honestly, any tricks in general scare me because I don't dance.
18:32I don't do, like, any sort of – I just – I've never had any experience like this in my life.
18:37So it's intimidating for sure, but the Death Drop is kind of working.
18:42So I think by Monday it'll be pretty epic.
18:47Hopefully.
18:49And what do you do?
18:52Right now, I'm nervous because we've got to go practice.
18:58I'm holding you up.
19:00I know.
19:01Sorry.
19:02I need a little bit.
19:03It's okay.
19:04I love you guys.
19:05I've been rooting for you guys since day one.
19:08So I'm, like, taking every second that I can get with you all.
19:11I understand the need for you to practice because then, like, I wouldn't be able to root for you anymore.
19:15That's what I'm saying.
19:16Yeah.
19:17There's more of these interviews.
19:19I know.
19:19So you've got to stay in the competition.
19:21I know.
19:21It's true.
19:22It's true.
19:22Okay.
19:23I'm going to ask one more question.
19:24I'm going to let you guys go.
19:25But I have to think of what it's going to be because I want it to be a good one.
19:28The final cue is the final question.
19:34Okay.
19:35What, who do you think is your biggest competition and how do you plan to make sure your score is always above theirs going forward?
19:46Our strategy is to show up to their home, wherever they live, and just intimidate.
19:51Yes.
19:51Stand up to my...
19:52Yeah, it's going to take a lot of my stuff.
19:54Yeah.
19:56For me, it's not really...
19:58Or, like, as of now, maybe because we're still early on, this isn't meant to sound conceited.
20:04I'm so focused on myself, not in, like, some great way.
20:07Like, I'm genuinely just so focused if I'm going to be able to get this dance in such a short amount of time and the length of the song keeps getting longer.
20:14And so, for me, I haven't really been thinking about, like, that's huge competition because also what I've realized is I don't like when people get voted off.
20:24I really love everybody that's a part of it, so I don't watch the, like, dances and feel like...
20:29Yeah, so when you get voted off, then you're like, dang, I wish they got voted off.
20:33Yeah, but we haven't been voted off yet, so that's why I'm saying I really like when everybody gets to stick around.
20:38And so, in a weird way, I'm kind of, like, rooting for everybody.
20:41I love seeing people get voted off.
20:43I know you do.
20:46You get my point.
20:50I do.
20:51I also know that Val is highly competitive, and so is Jenna.
