00:00Hello, welcome to another episode of Perstitutionalist Podcast.
00:06I am your host, Joseph M. Leonard.
00:10That's L-E-N-A-R-D at the French.
00:13It's not, it's Leonard without an O.
00:17Thank you for tuning in, as Graham Norton used to say, on his show.
00:24Let's get on with the show!
00:26Hello, everyone. A special introductory segment before getting into the episode.
00:35The remainder of December. Merry Christmas to all.
00:40And since I'll be using this opening through the rest of December,
00:46there will be Tuesday and Thursday drops here on out for December
00:51to help me get caught up with some interviews that I've got in the pile
00:56that have been recorded, waiting to be released.
01:00To help with the backlog, I'm going to do two a week now.
01:06Tuesdays and Thursdays, the rest of December.
01:08As well as January and February.
01:12So, in the background here, audio only, you're not seeing it, obviously,
01:20says, Merry Christmas to soldiers everywhere who can't be with their families,
01:25showing a group of soldiers with Santa and elf hats on.
01:31But, anyway, or at any rate, write the ongoing...
01:37Oh, I said write again.
01:40I've found I've gotten to the habit of saying, write?
01:44Write?
01:44I gotta watch that. I gotta stop that.
01:48Anyway, let's get on with an interview.
01:53Hello, everyone.
01:54Welcome to another episode of Chris-tututionalist Podcast.
01:59Podcast, a little behind the scenes.
02:02I use a service, as does the guest that's on today, called Podmatch,
02:09where podcasters or podcast stores, like me,
02:14and potential guests, like Nesia, right?
02:19Nesia.
02:20Nesia.
02:21I got it.
02:22I confirmed it with her before I hit record,
02:25a nice Nesia-tutution.
02:28Yes.
02:29Okay.
02:30Like a Nesia.
02:32Yes.
02:33There you go.
02:34Okay.
02:35But, anyway, we both use a Podmatch,
02:40is what it's called, service.
02:43Podcast stores and guests can come together
02:46so that you, the listener,
02:49which I coined the podcastee,
02:54I like inventing words,
02:57and there's another one of mine, right?
02:58You, the listener, or the podcastee,
03:02can then enjoy our coming together.
03:05I also am part of Radio Guest List,
03:09Podcast Guest List,
03:11and Matchmaker FM, as full disclosure.
03:14All right, Nesia.
03:18Yes.
03:18Alan, thank you.
03:22Thank you for joining me today,
03:25and on Podmatch,
03:28I've got a printout of you from there.
03:31It says,
03:32Stories that stick,
03:34Lessons that last.
03:37And that's all I needed to read.
03:39I like that verbiage.
03:41It's similar to other sayings, of course,
03:47but I like how you phrased it,
03:49and I just released my The Book of Kennedy.
03:56That's the Kindle cover, plain cover.
03:59Okay.
04:00But, anyway,
04:01I'm hoping that will be a story that sticks.
04:05Okay.
04:06And has in it lessons that will last for people,
04:09right?
04:10Not very clever,
04:14but I play that game anyway.
04:16I tie it all together, right?
04:20But let's back this thing up, right?
04:23Beep, beep, beep.
04:25First, let's start with,
04:28who is Nesha Allen?
04:30Where were you born, raised?
04:32Where are you now?
04:34Those kind of things.
04:35I was born in a small town,
04:39Muskegon, Michigan.
04:41Oh, yeah,
04:42not far from me.
04:43Yeah.
04:44Where are you at?
04:45I'm in Wyandotte.
04:47Okay.
04:48You can see Detroit on my logo back there.
04:51I see it, I see it, I see it.
04:53I went to school there.
04:55Yeah, if I move out of the way,
04:56people recognize the Renaissance Center.
04:59They don't recognize the Penobscot building
05:01and the other ones over there.
05:03Right.
05:04The Renaissance Center,
05:05oh, it's either the Rentsen Detroit
05:08or the mini version of it in L.A.
05:12There's a copy of it in L.A.
05:15that's smaller.
05:16But anyway, so,
05:19Muskegon, go on.
05:20Yep, I'm from Muskegon,
05:22but I actually,
05:23I'm kind of jumping.
05:25You stay right down the street.
05:26I used to live in Brownstown.
05:29Oh, yeah.
05:30Oh, yeah.
05:31You're right down the street.
05:32Yep, yep.
05:34Up the street.
05:36Up the street.
05:37Yeah, yeah.
05:38I love Wyandotte.
05:39Yeah, right, Michigan.
05:41It's like you get, right,
05:42get the, you know,
05:44the hands thing right.
05:46Yeah.
05:47Detroit over here,
05:48Wyandotte a little further south.
05:50Yeah.
05:50Brownstown a little further south from that.
05:53Yeah.
05:53And, of course,
05:55we got to do the trick question.
05:58Where is Windsor, Ontario, Canada?
06:01It's actually south of Detroit
06:04because Windsor kind of comes in like this.
06:09Yeah.
06:09If I can get it right.
06:10Underneath Detroit, really.
06:12Mm-hmm.
06:12You take the Windsor,
06:14Detroit Windsor Tunnel south to Windsor.
06:18At any rate.
06:22Yeah.
06:22You know,
06:23odd facts for people in the south of the United States who,
06:28Canada what?
06:29Canada who?
06:30Yeah.
06:30I grew up in a small town,
06:35Muskegon, Michigan.
06:36I was born to two teenage parents.
06:40Grew up in a urban neighborhood.
06:46Went through some trials as a young teen.
06:50But even through that,
06:51as I reflect on my journey,
06:53I see that God's presence was always present.
06:56And so even though my parents were a little young when they had me
07:01and they weren't really equipped to give me all the tools that I needed,
07:08God was still in the midst of everything.
07:10And he strategically placed different people in my life in different seasons
07:15to give me what my parents couldn't give me at that particular time.
07:20Various, various other mentors.
07:24Yes.
07:24Yes.
07:25Various mentors.
07:27One mentor that was really instrumental in seeding me was a gentleman by the name of Edwin Drake.
07:36He worked for a nonprofit organization called Campus Life.
07:41He used to come to our school and recruit children for Bible study.
07:46And he would come during lunch hour.
07:48He would walk the hallways.
07:50He would know our names.
07:52He would ask, are we coming?
07:54Let us know what time he's coming by to pick us up.
07:58And he was just relentless about getting these kids so saved that were forgotten about in the hood.
08:07He had such patience with us.
08:10I mean, the neighborhood used to give him a hard time.
08:14I mean, he used to drive his white van through the neighborhood.
08:20And, you know, they used to just really give him a hard time.
08:23As long as the white van didn't say free candy on the side, right?
08:30For the benefit of the transcript, we're laughing.
08:33That's a joke, people.
08:35Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:36But he was just an angel.
08:39And he recruited me in to be in leadership for Campus Life, the youth group.
08:48And doing so, I was just excited to get pizza on a Wednesday.
08:54That was like my highlight.
08:55You know, I didn't know that God was moving behind the scenes.
08:58And he was strategically planning things in me as it relates to ministry.
09:03And so, God worked in you through your stomach.
09:06Yes, he did.
09:08And that's real ministry where you can meet people right where they're at, where you can use their need to plant a seed.
09:16Amen, absolutely.
09:19That's right.
09:21You can't expect people to come to you.
09:24You have to take the message to people.
09:27And as exactly as you said, reach them in the manner that which most suits that void.
09:37Yes, yes.
09:40And so, I'm glad that the Holy Spirit moved him.
09:45And he was an open vessel to, you know, because it's one thing to be employed by an organization.
09:53But have the posture and the passion for what you do and who you want to connect with is two different things.
10:02The way that he poured into us, we had not only just Bible studies, but with the leadership group that he formed, we were able to talk about what we wanted to talk about for the upcoming Bible study.
10:16And what are the things that we were facing in high school as teens and at home?
10:22What's relevant in this to your life?
10:26Not like reading whatever scripture that doesn't relate well to, again, where you're at at that time.
10:37And, of course, different things relate and reach us when we're younger as opposed to when we're older.
10:46We're at different places in our lives throughout our aging process.
10:52Yes.
10:53I just wanted a joke.
10:55Relax, people.
10:56This is just a joke.
10:57Yeah.
10:58It's such a shame because he would be so disappointed with how you turned out.
11:02Yeah.
11:03It's a joke, people.
11:05It's a joke.
11:08I'm playing with her.
11:10It's just a joke.
11:12Can we lighten up, please?
11:16I admire him so much.
11:18He didn't have any children of his own.
11:22And he was a white Caucasian.
11:25And he was coming to an urban school that was 90% black.
11:31And he was recruiting us.
11:34He was loving on us.
11:35He was showing us the love of Christ.
11:37He also invited me to be a host on a talk show on the network, the public access network.
11:45It was called Straight Talk, where I got to talk about different issues that teens were facing straight up.
11:53And he also was a musician.
11:57And there were a lot of things that he embodied that, as I reflect on my life, that are direct reflection of who I am.
12:06And so, as I reflect, I do music.
12:10I'm also into film and production.
12:14And I am in ministry.
12:16I have a nonprofit called the Love Foundation, where our mission is to pour love into at-risk youth and homeless individuals.
12:26And when I look back on my life, and I'm just like, okay, God, you had a plan.
12:32And it was your plan and not the plan that I thought that I have for my life.
12:37You had a total different plan for me.
12:39I can kind of relate to him.
12:43My ex-wife and I never had kids.
12:46So, my sister also, who was married, they never had kids.
12:52So, I understand that, the saying, living vicariously through others.
12:58Well, yeah, I joked on other people's kids because I didn't have any, right?
13:03Yeah.
13:04It's like, can I borrow your kid?
13:07As weird as that would sound, right?
13:10You certainly don't say that, because that can be taken way the wrong way.
13:18But you know what I mean, right?
13:20Yeah.
13:21And as parents, we appreciate that, though, because...
13:24You get a break.
13:25We get a break.
13:27Go ahead.
13:27How long do you want them for?
13:29Yeah.
13:33Absolutely.
13:34How many days can they stay?
13:36You're right.
13:37Yeah.
13:38No, no, no.
13:38I want to give them back at night.
13:40You deal with them then, right?
13:42But, yeah.
13:45So, what brought about the phraseology?
13:50Stories that stick, lessons that last, and what does it mean to you and how you use that?
14:00Well, the stories that stick are all of my testimonies, how...
14:06Oh, my audience knows I can't resist a bad pun, right?
14:11It's not stories about a stick.
14:14No.
14:14You're not hitting anyone with a stick, right?
14:17No.
14:19I'm sorry.
14:20I can never pass the stupid puns.
14:25Yeah, no, I'm not hitting anybody with a stick.
14:27Although, spare the rod, spoil the child does come to mind, right?
14:32But, anyway, please continue now that I've interrupted.
14:37I don't know.
14:38I might have to think about that kid thing.
14:41You know, you're talking about spare the rod and sticks.
14:44You know, I don't know that.
14:45But it's all of my testimonies, how whenever I was faced in challenging situations or circumstances
14:58where I didn't have enough, God made enough.
15:03And so, when you think about stories that stick, like I was saying, my journey, even in
15:07high school, I lived with other family members during my high school time.
15:13I want to say maybe half of 10th, 11th, and 12th grade, I lived with other family members.
15:21And in doing so, God always made provision.
15:25I can remember not having enough money for my senior pitchers.
15:30And when you're around other children, and they're talking about their sessions.
15:35There's a peer pressure there.
15:38Yeah.
15:38A steam issue.
15:41Yes.
15:41Feeling left out of the crowd.
15:44And yes, yes.
15:45Yes.
15:46And when looking back on that, I don't even know how this came about, but God orchestrated
15:52where somehow I found out that the actual photography studio, which was Paris Studios
16:00in Muskegon, Michigan, I'm not sure if they're still around or not, but I found out that they
16:06would allow you to have your senior pitchers taken for free if you took the portfolios to
16:12school and showed your friends.
16:14Oh, that's nice.
16:15Right.
16:16I'm not a big Rolling Stones fan, but the song, you may not always get what you want, but
16:24you might find you get what you need.
16:28Yes.
16:28And also, Garth Brooks, sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers.
16:34What we want may not be what we really need.
16:38But in that situation, it was more than I needed because if, let's say, if my parents
16:45were in a financial situation to provide these things for me, it might not have even been
16:51at the amount that they gave me.
16:54I want to say they gave me like four different portfolios and they were probably priced at
16:58like $300, $400 a piece.
17:01And they gave me like half off my wallets and they weren't, they were inexpensive.
17:08So I got so much for a fraction of the price in my inability to...
17:16God multiplied.
17:18He multiplied it.
17:20Yeah.
17:20Five loaves and two fished it.
17:22That's what he did.
17:23Yep.
17:24Amen.
17:24Amen.
17:25Yes.
17:25Exactly.
17:26And valuable lessons like, right, stories that stick, lessons that last.
17:33Yes.
17:34Yes.
17:35And so with that, it's a story and a testimony to individuals who may be going through a season
17:41where they feel like they don't have enough or they're not sure where the things are going
17:48to come from that they do need.
17:51God is always present no matter what.
17:54And the other thing is too, had you had the money and you just paid it and there would
18:01have been no second thought about it.
18:03Right.
18:04You wouldn't have appreciated what you had as much through that.
18:10Right.
18:11Through that God's working through it.
18:13And indeed, as we're saying, then you've got the story and the lesson.
18:21You were put in a place of need because in a way it was what you needed.
18:29And that lesson has stuck with me.
18:32Anytime I'm faced with anything, I know, God, you're there.
18:36I know you are Jehovah Jireh, my provider.
18:39And I know you're making provision.
18:41I'm not going to grow weary.
18:43I'm not going to complain.
18:45I'm not going to get frustrated.
18:47So when I look back on my life.
18:50I complain.
18:52Please believe me.
18:52I complain.
18:54But I always joke, you know, when people say, how are you doing?
18:58I could be better, could be worse.
19:01So when I catch myself whining, I remind myself and others, a lot of others have it worse.
19:10And it would be much worse.
19:12I'm on disability right now.
19:14Doctors want to send me for a bunch of tests.
19:17It's like, you know, this test, that test, another.
19:20They all want $50 co-pays.
19:22I don't know where that's coming from.
19:25I can't afford all these co-pays for all these tests.
19:29But, you know, it is what it is.
19:32It's where I'm at.
19:33It's the way it is.
19:35And it isn't going to do me any good to complain about it.
19:39And they may say, you know, you have to take all these tests.
19:42But God may be saying, I'm keeping you healed and whole.
19:46Well, you don't have to need to take all these tests.
19:49If you don't have the means and the finances to take it, I'm preserving you anyway.
19:54You don't need to take it.
19:56I am your source and your provider.
19:59So I think a lot of times when we look at situations, if we look at our cup as not half
20:04empty of God, but half full of God and look at it through a different lens, it'll change
20:10our whole life experience and just our perspective on everything.
20:15So I have so many stories that stick and lessons that last about life and God's presence.
20:24And this too shall pass.
20:26My audience know and I can't pass the pun.
20:29You said lens.
20:31Speaking of lenses, I need new glasses.
20:33Well, I'm going to believe God for you to get them.
20:40These are jokes, people.
20:40These are jokes, people.
20:45So you're a comedian as well.
20:47Yeah.
20:47Well, you know, things are so serious.
20:50Even in my Terror Strikes, Coming Soon to a City Near You book about terrorism, although
20:58I say it's not about death and destruction.
21:01It's about life and living.
21:03And obviously a book about terrorism, you don't think of as a Christian book, but it is very
21:09much a Christian book nonetheless.
21:11Even in that book that we're dealing with that seriousness, there's a comic relief chapter
21:18making the point, we got to keep a sense of humor on people, right?
21:25Insane in the Membrane as, oh, I forget the group now.
21:30Yeah, I remember that.
21:32Insane in the Membrane.
21:33Yeah, you know who I'm talking about, but I forget who it is now.
21:37Now I got our train off the track here with my lame jokes.
21:46You are an author.
21:48Yes.
21:49You did mention a book, I think, already.
21:51Do you have it there handy to hold up?
21:54All right.
21:55For those looking at behind the scenes video, you could see today the number, oh, no, 21
22:02Day Jumpstart Business Blueprint Spiritual Roadmap, Nisha Allen, and that's N-E-I-S-I-A, Allen.
22:15Of course, when we're done, I'll be putting that on a scroll at the bottom of the screen
22:20for behind the video.
22:22But I spell it for sake of those listening on the 25 plus audio platforms and the benefit
22:30of the transcript, again, that's N-E-I-S-I-A, Allen, with an E, they're A-L-L-E-N, not A-N,
22:40two L's in there.
22:42Do you have another book in the works?
22:46I actually do.
22:47I have a book that I am working on, and it's about my journey, and it's called, it's four
22:57R's, and it's called, Rest, Reflect, Repent, and Reset.
23:04Oh, I'm glad you have Reflect in there.
23:07I've got a few episodes on that, and in the life of Kennedy, too, I mention people that
23:15are, right, the me, me, me kind, and the world revolves around them, and they need the
23:21message, no, sorry, it doesn't.
23:24But the need to self-reflect, the Michael Jackson song, I'm starting with the man in the mirror.
23:33You got it.
23:34Rick Springfield on his Karma album has a song called Prayer, which is like his version of
23:41Michael Jackson's Man in the Mirror, where he sings, I send a prayer to heaven for the
23:47chance to be a better man than the man I see, right?
23:52Self-reflection, so few can do it.
23:56It's sad.
23:57So, a part of my journey, I went through a series of events, but also a time period in
24:06my life where I was just so unhappy, unfulfilled, and overwhelmed, and...
24:13I feel that.
24:14Yes, yes.
24:16I've been there, yes.
24:17Yes.
24:17I don't like to talk about it, but I feel required.
24:23I feel compelled.
24:24I feel called to mention it, right?
24:28I'm not happy about saying it, but I am a suicide attempt survivor.
24:34Everybody's situation is different.
24:36So, I can't say I was in your shoes.
24:38Your shoes are different than mine.
24:41There's a similar situation that happened that put us in bad places.
24:46Negative, that little devil on the shoulder whispering in the ear that we might be susceptible
24:52to at that point.
24:54And again, the book of Kennedy, all about life and living, and indeed, all lives have value
25:02and meaning.
25:02Whether you see it on a daily, or ever, you may not write, it's not like it's a wonderful
25:10life, where Clarence the Angel comes down and shows you life if you weren't here.
25:18But that doesn't mean, you know, you didn't stop a pharmacist from poisoning a child, or
25:25you didn't save a brother who went on to be a war hero.
25:29That's a dramatic movie.
25:31Yeah.
25:32Little things.
25:33Little things add up that you might not see and realize your life has a major role to play.
25:41I like to say it's like the Pantene commercial.
25:45You remember that?
25:46They tell two people, then they tell two people, then they tell two people.
25:50Pretty soon, you've exponential movement.
25:52Yeah.
25:52Or the movie Butterfly Effect.
25:56Yeah.
25:56Right?
25:57Small things add to a tsunami over there.
26:01Yeah.
26:02You might not see it.
26:03You may not know it.
26:04But you help somebody who then has a child who goes on to cure cancer.
26:12Right.
26:12Your forced smile that made their day better may have led to curing cancer.
26:19And people don't see those dots to connect them.
26:22If we just sit back and just reflect, like you said, a lot of people don't even take the
26:26time to pause, to reflect.
26:30And so I went...
26:31Yeah, life is so hectic.
26:33Yeah.
26:33We're in a rush.
26:34And hurry, hurry, rush, rush, forward, forward, forward.
26:38Yes.
26:40Matt Davis, you got to stop and smell the roses.
26:44I found myself at a place where I was so empty.
26:47And so I really had to lean into God.
26:50So I had to take a rest so that I can reflect on how did I arrive here?
26:57Because I had found myself so much in a dark place where I didn't want to live anymore.
27:03I didn't want to live anymore.
27:04I didn't want my life anymore.
27:06I couldn't make sense of it.
27:08Been there, yeah.
27:08I was so empty.
27:10I couldn't make sense of it.
27:12Right.
27:12You felt like there was no meaning and no purpose.
27:16Yeah.
27:16But again, whether we see it or not, it's there.
27:19I read a devotion called Jesus Calling daily.
27:24Well, actually, I listened to it.
27:25I had the app on my phone and I listened to it.
27:28And so after listening to it for about six months and having my private devotional time with God,
27:36my mind shifted and things that used to matter didn't matter anymore.
27:42And I realized that I was carrying things and I was on this hamster wheel of working and acquiring things that had no meaning and no value.
27:57And they were draining me.
27:58And then they became an idol and spiritual leaders became an idol.
28:05And I was worshiping all these things and people.
28:09And God said, that's why you're empty, because you're full of everything that's not me.
28:13I've done a lot of songs today.
28:16I mentioned Michael Jackson, Rook Springfield, Rolling Stones, Mac Davis.
28:21One more, Disney, right?
28:23Let it go.
28:24Let it go.
28:25You preach it.
28:28Yes.
28:29Let it go.
28:31Thank you, Elsa.
28:32I mean, absolutely.
28:34Let it go.
28:36Yes.
28:36Let it go.
28:38And in this season of my life, I have less things, but I'm much more happier.
28:44I'm much more freer.
28:46My life is so much more purposeful.
28:49I have more impactful people around me that are not pulling from me, but are pouring.
28:55And it's a mutual pouring relationship.
28:58It's not just one sided.
29:00I finally took time out to write my book.
29:03God put the idea for the book in me in 2019, and it took me all the way to 2025 to be obedient
29:13and do it because now I had the time and I had the clarity and I didn't have other things
29:21that were in the way.
29:23And I'm like, okay, God, you want me to do this book.
29:25You want me to use my experience of building businesses or going into businesses that you
29:32did not plan for me to do.
29:34And that was a part of my emptiness.
29:36So the first chapter in the book is called Seek Ye First.
29:40And that's what we should do when we're going into business and when we're starting new ventures
29:45or whatever we're doing, we forget to really seek him.
29:48We just follow the numbers.
29:51We follow other people's expectations and we follow suggestions.
29:54But we don't follow God and say, God, is this what you would want me to do?
29:58Is this the right business?
30:00And so I wrote the book based on my experiences.
30:05And each chapter, it starts off with a scripture and things to build that particular.
30:12I do the same thing in Terror Strikes.
30:15Okay.
30:16Coming soon to a city.
30:17Yeah.
30:17There's even a couple Quranical quotes in there, but mostly biblical scriptures.
30:23Again, Terror Strikes coming soon to a city near you, you would think of it as a Christian
30:29book, but that helps makes it a Christian book.
30:32Yeah.
30:33Indeed.
30:33That's why I'm on disability.
30:36I haven't been working since 2004.
30:40That's why I'm an author now.
30:42Found the time.
30:44Yes.
30:45For me to do this.
30:46Yes.
30:46You're not going to do that anymore.
30:50And it took years, including after a suicide attempt for me to realize this is what he wants
30:58me.
30:59This show and these books are what he wants me doing.
31:04Good.
31:05That is, that is a story that sticks.
31:11Bringing it full circle.
31:13That's a great place to wrap it up.
31:15Do you have a website for people to reach out to you?
31:19Yes.
31:20They can reach out to me on www.nishaallen.com.
31:24And on there, you can purchase my book and then you also can see more about me.
31:30I'm also an interior designer.
31:32I do film and project management events.
31:37I do a plethora of things.
31:40God's already designed my interior.
31:43There you go.
31:44I can't pass the stupid puns no matter how bad they are.
31:54And you can catch me on social media, Nisha Allen, at Nisha Allen.
32:02I also act in skits.
32:04Shout out to Who is Jordan Jackson and Shell Purcell.
32:09They're producers of some skits that I am also an actress in that are on YouTube.
32:15Yes.
32:16On YouTube and Facebook.
32:18Okay.
32:19That's great.
32:19Thank you, Nisha Allen.
32:22Everyone talking about stories that stick.
32:25Nothing to do with an actual stick.
32:29Lessons that last.
32:32Take care.
32:33God bless.
32:35Thanks for having me.
