A devastating road accident on the Purvanchal Expressway in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, claimed five members of a policeman’s family on 10 December 2025. The deceased included the wife and four children of Azamgarh constable Javed Ashraf Siddiqui.

The incident occurred around 4 PM near Dih village in the Haidergarh area when a speeding Maruti Brezza SUV crashed into the family’s parked WagonR. The impact was so severe that bodies were flung nearly 20 metres, and both vehicles were engulfed in flames. The WagonR’s doors were locked, trapping the occupants as the fire spread rapidly, reportedly fuelled by a suspected CNG cylinder explosion.

Passersby managed to pull out some of the injured before fire teams reached the spot. The blaze led to significant traffic congestion on the expressway.

Constable Siddiqui’s wife, Chandni alias Gulfshan (30), and their four children—daughters Samreen (reported as 22), Ilma (10), Isma (8), and son Zian (10)—died on the spot, many of them burned alive. Chandni’s brother, Zeeshan, who was driving the WagonR, survived with serious injuries and is undergoing treatment in Lucknow. Three occupants of the Brezza were also injured, one of them critically. A total of five injured individuals from both vehicles were initially treated at local hospitals before being referred further.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended condolences and directed officials to provide relief and ensure proper medical care for the survivors. Police suspect the Brezza driver may have dozed off at the wheel. The investigation is underway, including why the WagonR was parked on the expressway and the source of the fire.

The family was travelling from Azamgarh to Lucknow and had reportedly stopped briefly to drink water.
